PUBLISHER’S LETTER

2015 EXOTIC CARS

T

he “fast and furious” world of exotic automobiles awaits you in the next 144 pages of this 13th annual edition of the duPont REGISTRY™ Exotic Car Buyers Guide. Whether you are in your dream book mindset or your purchase-now-check-list, this issue is for you. We have covered, we think, the most exciting automobiles available in the marketplace today. From dramatic styling to advanced engineering, to incredible performance, we want you to enjoy this special road trip. To help you better understand the nuances of most of the automobiles listed herein, we have secured the services of the one-and-only Justin Bell. His formidable resume of experiences in the world of exotic automobiles has ranged from the driver’s seat to the forum participant, to the electronic world of internet media and to television. You have most likely seen him somewhere (or everywhere) and now you get to enjoy his perspective in this select guide to exotic automobiles. It is my distinct pleasure to welcome him to this “first” as our editor for this year’s guide. We thought that our updated format and our investment in unparalleled editorial talent would be well received, but it is the actual car world that is setting new milestones almost every month. Last year in the 2014 guide I noted the extraordinary sale of a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider for $27.5 million. Well, as you most likely know, that is old news because the record was broken by a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that sold at auction for $38 million. Once again, I ask: Does this year’s buyer’s guide include the $100 million car of the future? Time will tell. Be sure to take note of those special automobiles that have been selected “BEST” by our editorial staff. These, we believe, are the leaders in their respective categories in dramatic styling, advanced engineering and incredible performance. So, enjoy your own “flights of fantasy,” or the actual stimulation of your “buying gland” as you review this year’s Exotic Car Buyers Guide 2015. Happy Motoring,

ALFA ROMEO 4C I associate Alfa Romeo with straight-forward performance and Italian flair. I am sure that way back in history they were luxurious automobiles, but my experience has always been a little more raw. When it comes to pure driving, raw can be a great quality. The 4C looks amazing with a dynamic, energetic stance and very cool wheels, and the impression of power is reinforced by the size of the car. It is small with a carbon-fiber monocoque, so it came as no surprise to me when it handled with the direct no-nonsense feel of a true sports car. It sounds bigger than it

looks and when you lift off the gas it has that smile-inducing “blaaap noise that encourages you to shift at every opportunity. Because the 4C is quick to react and nimble, I found I drove it fast. Everywhere. And that is the beauty of small sports cars. If you are looking for a pure sports car experience backed by a legendary brand, and some of the high-end luxuries are not your priority, then look at the 4C. I guarantee you will smile a whole lot more than most, and everyday driving for you will be pure. Raw, even.

ASTON MARTIN DB9 CARBON EDITION Slipping behind the wheel of Aston Martin’s new DB9, it’s hard to think that, in principle, this model has been around for ten years. Everything about a modern-day Aston Martin is current and cutting edge. Of course, to keep any car model in vogue, a limited edition model has to be released, and the DB9 Carbon Edition is as perfect an execution of that mandate as possible. Up close, the introduction of carbon fiber everywhere exudes a masculine feel. All the aerodynamic body elements are in carbon fiber, and in black the DB9 is striking to look at. On the inside

prepare to be equally as impressed. It is a successful mix of luxury and power. The interior is an equally impressive mix of luxury and power. Of course if this all sounds a bit overbearing, just turn on the engine and let it rip. The V-12 engine tone is magnificent and handling is surprisingly responsive and agile for a car of this size. The DB9 really is perfect for blasting down long, open, fast stretches of road in luxury. And yet it will not let you down when more active driving is required. It is also a statement of individuality, which goes a long way in terms of street cred.

ASTON MARTIN RAPIDE S The modern day Aston Martin has a physical presence unmatched in the industry, and the Rapide S sits as the pinnacle of their aesthetic achievement. It’s the way the Rapide S looks fast. I love the muscular haunches and the integrated race-inspired aerodynamic aids, such as the front splitter and rear diffuser. They are not just for show either, as this is a seriously fast machine, hitting 190 mph. The well established Aston Martin 6.0-liter V-12 now sits lower and further back in the front and gets more power with 550 horsepower and 457 foot-pounds of

torque. By lowering the center of gravity in the car, the handling is more responsive. I definitely could feel that the Rapide S is a more nimble version of itself, although the inclusion of the latest Adaptive Damping System is of great help in making the car perform at its best. Now this is the important thing to remember: the Rapide S is a four-door car. The visceral thrill of turning on that big V-12 can be shared with friends, and while you won’t be doing any burnouts, there is a pure energy to the driving experience that is uniquely Aston Martin.

ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH VOLANTE The Aston Martin Vanquish Volante is, hands-down, the most beautiful convertible of the year. Driving one reminds you that this is a gorgeous motorcar, because people just stop and stare. The Vanquish Volante is long, sleek and sinewy and has a definite upper-class aura about it, and people respond accordingly. Now I love open-top driving so I was excited to take the Aston Martin for a fast drive in the mountains. In doing so I found an interesting transition taking place. This is a true Grand Touring car and so everything is about enjoying the journey. At slow

speeds, I was very aware of the gorgeous interior and the rumble of the 6.0-liter V-12, and not at all conscious of the bad road surfaces. But, as I made it out of the city and pressed the red ‘S’ for Sport button on the steering wheel, a more youthful personality emerged. Electronics speed up, steering becomes firmer, the exhaust is louder and you feel the energy ramp up. As I ate up the miles around corners and across the flats, I can only tell you that I didn’t want the journey to end. The Vanquish Volante is the perfect balance of beauty, brains and brawn.

$282,110 | 6.0L V-12 | 565 hp | 0–60: 4.1 seconds | Top Speed: 183 mph Transmission: 6-speed automatic | Torque: 457 foot-pounds

ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE GT In my transition from full-time racer to TV host, one of my most enjoyable gigs is the Le Mans 24 Hour race in France. During this epic race, my secret pleasure is in supporting the Aston Martin race team as they do battle with the established racing giants. I was very excited to see the Vantage GT launched here in the US. It’s a great street representation of the Vantage GT4 racecar that can be seen across North America during the 2014 season. It has race inspired aerodynamics and styling across the bodywork, and the graphics packages are as cool as you want to make them.

Inside it is a little more luxurious than the racing version, but there is a purposeful attitude nevertheless, with sports seats, black-magnesium paddle-shifts and carbon fiber all around you. The Vantage GT is a very sporty Grand Tourer to push hard. It has a tremendously responsive mid-mounted 4.7-liter dry sump V-8 with a cracking exhaust to match. Engineers worked diligently to calibrate the sports suspension and steering, as from corner entry to exit the chassis feels planted. You may not be an Aston Martin factory race driver, but in the Vantage GT, you will feel like one.

AUDI R8 LMX

I am a huge fan of the R8, always have been. For me it is an everyday supercar, not to be confused with ordinary. Out of many of the cars I get to test, the R8 has a duality that is perfect. I can pick up my son in it from school not long after giving myself the gift of a wildly fast blast along the famous Mulholland Drive here in Los Angeles. He can climb in the car with the heat still radiating off the brakes and the smile on my face. The new R8 LMX is a limited edition variant of this Audi flagship model and, as you would expect, it does everything just a bit better. I spoke with my friend Tom Kristensen, nine times Le Mans 24-Hour Winner for Audi, who has driven the R8 LMX at speed. He was enthusiastic about the levels of performance, achievable for each one of the 99 lucky owners that will spend time behind the wheel.

The 570-horsepower engine has naturally aspirated power on tap. It’s always a sweet experience, as the seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox allows the car to be ready for action at any time. Being mid-engined and compact with a well-developed chassis, the driver has an impression of total control in whatever situation. For me, Audi obviously has the best four-wheel-drive system out there and it’s almost perfect in the front-rear bias. When driving it hard, you get the best of both worlds. The surefootedness of the four wheels pulls you through the corner, yet it retains the ability to rotate the rear to an angle that feels like a rear-wheel-drive car on attack. 99 lucky people will buy the R8 LMX, and each of the R8s has real lasers to magnify the high beams. It doesn’t get much better than that.

$288,855 | 5.2L V-10 | 570 hp | 0–60: 3.4 seconds | Top Speed: 198.8 mph Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch automatic | Torque: 398 foot-pounds 26

AUDI RS5 I always get a bit excited when I get to drive anything from Audi with ‘R’ in the name, as they usually deliver something extra-special. So, when I hit the roads in the RS5, I had high expectations. From the outset there wasn’t a single disappointment. The car looks sharp and solid, with the rear being my favorite angle. The huge oval exhausts dominate, while a subtle rear-wing hints at the performance to come. Under the skin tremendous technology is at work to make your driving experience all it can be. The 4.0-liter V-8 gives a maximum output of 450 horsepower at

a very enthusiastic 8,300 rotations per minute and all this power is put to the road through the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Driving the RS5, or any Audi for that matter, involves a slight shift in technique when cornering hard. Believe me when I tell you that as long as you get your line right and hit your apex, you can mash the gas for all it is worth and the car will use its impressive four wheel drive grip to amazing advantage.

$70,900 | 4.0L V-8 | 450 hp | 0–60: 4.5 seconds | Top Speed: 174 mph Transmission: 7-speed dual clutch automatic | Torque: 317 foot-pounds

AUDI RS7 SPORTBACK It can hit 60 mph from a standstill in under four seconds and reach a top speed of 174 mph. But how it gets there is equally as impressive. Right off the bat, the four wheel drive and intelligent electronics will set the tone for the rest of your trip. Whatever I threw at it, the RS7 handled with ease. I like to think I am beyond making driving mistakes, but of course, that’s just ego. The reality is that when I did carry too much corner entry speed or turn in late, this big Audi would simply compensatefor my momentary lack of talent and deliver me back on line. The V-8 twin-turbo

is crazy fast with 560 horsepower, and watch out, you drive everywhere at a tough pace to match. Turbo lag is minimal, so it’s an easy car to drive around town. But as you get things wound up, the V-8 exhaust note is musical and the speed of each shift is amazing, even for a race driver. I am a big fan of the optional carbon-ceramic brakes—with the way you’ll want to drive this car, you may find you need them.

AUDI S3 The Audi S3, being the performance version of the A3, is the high performance compact sedan from Ingolstadt. Under the hood is a new 2.0-liter TFSI turbo four-cylinder engine that creates 292 horsepower and 280 foot-pounds. With torque and horsepower so closely matched, smooth acceleration can be found in any situation. From a standstill, 60 mph arrives in 4.7 seconds thanks to the light 3,200-pounds curb weight and Quattro® all-wheel-drive. US-spec cars are denied a manual transmission, leaving the S tronic® dual-clutch as our only choice.

The S3 offers many features not found on the competition. Lane assist pulls you back in if you drift, while adaptive cruise handles all brake and throttle events during stop and go traffic. Magnetic suspension with Drive Select offers four modes of steering and chassis settings. Audi Connect brings Google Earth 3D and Google Maps to the seven-inch HD screen. Seven adaptive airbags and Audi side-assist radar provide 360 degrees of protection. If you want technology, speed and value, the Audi S3 is for you.

$52,089 | 2.0L turbo I4 | 292 hp | 0–60: 4.7 seconds | Top Speed: 155 mph Transmission: 6-speed dual-clutch automatic | Torque: 280 foot-pounds

AUDI S6 Audi has decided to give the S6 a bit of a facelift for 2015. The most notable update comes in the form of new full LED headlights and tail lights, as opposed to only LED daytime running lights. Under the hood is the same proven 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 also found in the S8, which provides the driver with 420 horsepower and 406 foot-pounds of torque. Mate this engine to the seven-speed S tronic® dual-clutch transmission with quattro® all-wheel drive and the car will complete a 0-60 mph run in 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph. Helping the engine move

the car along is a reduction in weight. This drop was made possible by Audi’s ultra® light technology that consists of advanced material and construction methods. The 2015 S6 also comes with a number of technological features aimed at increasing the car’s safety. These features include the multiple-view camera system, head-up display, night-vision assistant, Audi side assist, Audi adaptive cruise control and much more. For those seeking a four-door sedan that will lay down power in a luxurious and safe package, the new 2015 Audi S6 is a great choice.

AUDI S8 Perhaps the most remarkable thing about driving an S8 is the fact that you can go about your business almost unnoticed. The S8 is an amazing full-size luxury sedan. The S8 is a flagship for a brand that has many lust-worthy cars in its line-up, and yet it bears the most subtle branding ever. But don’t mistake the calm exterior for a boring driving experience—far from it. The S8 can race from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds all while conducting a conference call, which is equally impressive, as you are turbocharged all the way. I am not sure if there is a better transmis-

sion than the eight-speed automatic as it goes up and down gears. The lack of intrusive road noise is amazing even at highway speeds but there is enough rumble from the exhaust to remind you that you do have 520 horsepower. What I find even more amazing is that for a car of significant ‘stature’ the S8 can really hustle into corners as well, thanks in no small part to the Audi all-wheel drive. The only limiting factor may be the surprised look on your passenger’s faces as you flick it around like a large sports car.

$114,900 | 4.0L twin-turbo V-8 | 520 hp | 0–60: 3.9 seconds | Top Speed: 155 mph Transmission: 8-speed automatic | Torque: 481 foot-pounds

AUDI TT Unique and bold, the Audi TT leaves quite an impression—not only on the driver, but on observers as well. With Audi’s award-winning 2.0-liter turbocharged TFSI inline-4 engine, boasting 211 horsepower with 258 footpounds of torque, what could be better? Not only does the TT sport Audi’s Quattro® all-wheel drive for that perfect tire-to-tarmac connection, but it also fronts agility with reduced weight due to its aluminum construction. LED daytime running lights, a Bose sound system and full iPod integration all starting at just over $40,000 make the Audi TT unbelievably desirable.

Aside from the features above, the Audi TT now includes a parking system with rear back-up sensors as a safety feature, and the exterior of this beauty will leave your friends’ jaws dropped. Precise lines, curves with a certain sharpness and an aggressive stance instigate a ‘double-take’ and a look back every time you park it. There’s an incredible amount to be impressed by inside and out, leaving enthusiasts, well, incredibly enthused.

BMW ALPINA B6 xDRIVE GRAN COUPE Growing up in Europe I was very aware of the cool factor of an Alpina BMW. But here in the States, American car fans have not had much exposure to this unique partnership. With the introduction of the ALPINA B6 xDrive Gran Coupe, that is changing, but a little education may be required. The relationship between BMW and Alpina is a formal one, but different from their own ‘M’ GmbH division. Alpina’s end product is a very stylish and luxurious take on an already great product. The ALPINA B6 xDrive Gran Coupe has a 540-horsepower version of the BMW twin-tur-

bocharged 4.4-liter V-8 and it is electric to drive. 0-60 mph acceleration is a claimed 3.7 seconds with a liberated top speed of 198 mph. The B6 is all-wheel drive and is as good in the corners as any four-door sedan could wish. In terms of outwards appearance, there is not much of a difference, but the Alpina exclusive, 20-spoke 20-inch aluminum wheels are magnificent. I would also opt for the trademark Alpina graphics package; it gives your BMW a visual link to one of the coolest tuner brands in automotive history.

BMW i8

When I first caught sight of the BMW i8, I thought it was yet another concept car that wasn’t bound to make it to production. Then I spoke with my friends at BMW communication and learned that it was, in fact, destined for production, and that it would be available in just a few months. That was like being told my Star Trek Teleporter would be arriving by UPS that same week. The future was most obviously now, and I was ready. Kudos to BMW designers and engineers for creating a vehicle that looks like what we all dream of with swooping lines, mysterious angles and high tech promises. And, I was allowed to get inside and play. In terms of powertrain, the i8 has a balanced combination of a threecylinder turbo internal combustion engine with 228 horsepower for the rear wheels and a two-speed electric motor for the front.

The driving experience is modern and familiar, as expected of a BMW, and the i8 feels tight and responsive. Even though the engine ‘noise’ is a pre-recorded soundtrack in sync with the actual engine revs and load, I soon forgot that was the case as the whole package was simply exciting to be a part of. I am sure that when looking at purchasing an exotic plug-in car, charge time and range of battery should be taken into consideration. But if the deciding factor is performance, luxury or individuality, then the i8 is ‘lightyears’ ahead.

BMW M235i Our hearts were broken when BMW’s 1 Series M ended production, but now we have reason to celebrate. The new M2 will feature a proper twin turbo straight six engine with manual or dual-clutch transmissions. The 2 Series coupe (Series F22) was new for 2014, and replaced the one series coupes and convertibles. It is a feather-light rear-wheel-drive chassis built to compete with the Mercedes CLA and Cadillac ATS. For a true M version of the 2 Series, a host of changes are on the way. Aggressive body panels accentuate the lower stance and wider wheels.

The S55 engine creates 425 horsepower and 406 foot-pounds in the M3 and M4, and such power in a car the size of M2 will yield world-class performance and surprising fuel economy. As the M2 is in final testing, the hottest 2 Series available is the M235i. Foreshadowing some of the M2’s capabilities, it features a direct-injected 320 horsepower 3.0-liter TwinPower six- cylinder engine coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Giant brakes and Michelin Pilot SuperSports provide amazing grip while launch control whisks you to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

BMW M3 BMW has done away with the M3 Coupe and has now made the legendary M3 available only as a sedan. For those who still want their two-door M-powered fix, be sure to read up on the 2015 BMW M4, also featured in this issue. While the doors may be the most evident change made to the new M3, there are quite a few other changes that make this new M3 deserving of even more attention. Previous M3 models were powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V-8; the new 2015 model has a 3.0-liter TwinPower inline-six engine installed. Thanks to the two

turbochargers, BMW states that this engine puts out 431 horsepower. This power will rocket the car from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. Of course, power means nothing if the car has a few too many pounds. Thankfully, an intelligent lightweight design was top priority for BMW engineers. Throughout the car, especially in the carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) roof, lightweight materials were used. Enthusiasts are going to fall in love with the M3 all over again thanks to the 2015 model.

BMW M4 CONVERTIBLE High performance convertibles are fantastic things, and the new 2015 M4 convertible is set to raise the bar even higher. The engine is the true heart of a BMW and this TwinPower 3.0-liter inline-six will deliver 425 horsepower and 406 foot-pounds of torque, redlining at 7,600 rpm. It will get you from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds with the double-clutch transmission and a spot of M Launch control. These modern three-piece retractable hardtops are amazing feats of engineering; they can fold up in 20 seconds while still rolling along at 20 mph. The beauty of the

hardtop is that you really can enjoy the full experience of both driving worlds. With the top up it’s as quiet and solid as a sedan; with the roof down, you get the full open-air stimulation. From a design perspective, the M4 Convertible is a mix of muscular M features, such as the intakes and hood bump, with a liberal application of M detailing and logos. The M4 is fast, fun and a true dual personality.

$64,200 | 3.0L twin-turbo I6 | 425 hp | 0–60: 3.9 seconds | Top Speed: 156 mph Transmission: 6-speed manual, 7-speed automatic | Torque: 406 foot-pounds

BMW M5 Let’s talk about power. The M5 is faster than ever before thanks to engine development work, especially on the high volume turbos, and an increase to 560 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque. This is balanced by the dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox that is smooth, quick and adjustable, from the refined road setting, to the ‘S3’ all-out track mode. Drivability is also a question of balance. In the M5 you get three settings. The most simple allows you to purr around in smooth luxury, while the Sport Plus sets you up for a sportier ride with stiffer suspension, fast

engine mapping and more responsive steering. The way the M5 looks is balanced too. It is bigger than ever before but doesn’t look it. For the driver there is an intelligent blend of the latest technology with simple analog buttons for direct control over unique functions. The M5 achieves its balance as a really fast car with racing pedigree but with the luxury and style that you demand as an executive on the way to work.

BMW M6 GRAN COUPE The M6 Gran Coupe is one handsome automobile. It has presence and stature, as it should at the top of the BMW family tree. M styling adds a powerful persona to the 6 Series Gran Coupe, with the addition of large front air intakes, meaty wheel arches and taut rear haunches, along with traditional M cues, such as the carbon-fiber roof. What I loved about driving this big BMW is that the wide torque range seemed to match the car’s personality. The 560 horsepower and 502 foot-pounds of torque firmly push you back in your seat. I know that the official figures are

0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds, but wow, it felt faster than that to me. I also enjoyed the feeling of tailoring the M6 Gran Coupe’s performance thresholds to my own ambitions for whatever road I was on. I would advise making the most of the two M buttons on the steering wheel so you can quickly switch from a well-behaved urban-driving setting to an all-out ‘have-a-blast’ one. Whatever the situation, the M6 Gran Coupe is freaky fast without letting any of its luxury slip. Amazing, really.

BMW X6M What happens when you take a handsome and successful SUV and give it a fastback roof? The X6, started as a concept ‘Sports Activity Vehicle®’ in 2007, has sold more than 250,000 units worldwide. For an encore, the new-for 2015 lineup has a more flowing appearance than the hard edges of the first generation. What hasn’t changed is that the X6 and its X5 sibling are built exclusively in Spartanburg, South Carolina. All available engine choices are turbocharged, with the X6M sporting 555 horsepower from its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. ‘EfficientDynamics’ can be seen in the

unconventional design of the engine. The intake ports are outboard of the cylinders and the exhaust ports open inward to the engine valley. Both turbos are nestled in the valley, allowing for a direct shot of exhaust. Needless to say, the turbos spool with a vengeance, providing more than 500 foot-pounds of torque. A six-speed automatic offers full manual control via the sequential shifter or paddles behind the wheel. If you are looking for a refined and incredibly powerful crossover for your active lifestyle, the X6M can be yours for under $100,000.

BMW Z4 sDrive35is The BMW Z4 sDrive35is is a roadster at the top of its food chain. Efficient Dynamics is their new mantra for increased power along with efficiency. It is achieved by fitting the 335 horsepower 3.0-liter TwinPower straight six while maintaining a near perfect weight balance. This allows the Z4 to bob and weave with exceptional fluidity. The best retractable hard top in the industry has the insulation and rigidity of a coupe with the ability to go topless in 22 seconds at speeds up to 25 mph. Deep bolstered leather seats are elevated above the floor, and

when combined with a low beltline, claustrophobia is a problem of the past. A big 8.8-inch HD screen keeps infotainment within easy reach without distracting the driver. Though the windshield pillars may seem a bit chunky, just remember they make the car stiffer and safer in case of a rollover. But, rollovers are now banished to the history books, thanks to the latest in Dynamic Stability Control. Forget the clichés associated with roadsters of the past. No sacrifices must be made to make this your daily driver.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT3-R I remember when Bentley launched the Continental GT. It was blindingly fast without sacrificing any of the trademark brand luxury. Now there is an even faster version, the GT3-R, with all the makings of another Bentley superstar. Over the past year or so, Bentley has been immersed in the development of the GT3 racing car. The program has already had huge success in the worldwide sportscar scene, with a great transfer of technology that benefits us. That race car is the genesis for the GT3-R that you and I can go and buy. Power again plays a central role with a

twin-turbo V-8 developing 572 horsepower. What makes it even more potent is a 220-pound weight loss and shorter gearing to get things going faster. When you think about it, 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds is mindblowing for a car of this size, but you can thank the all-wheel drivesystem and torque vectoring for that. I love the interior, it is somehow still very ‘Bentley’ and stylish but with a cool racing flair, which is pretty much the perfect combination.

BENTLEY FLYING SPUR This is the second generation Flying Spur and, as before, it is capable of providing a hard-to-believe performance thrill from a very full-size luxury car. I got to drive the W-12 twin-turbocharged version and it is a 6.0liter all-wheel drive powerhouse of high-class automotive luxury. It was most fun when I hit the highway on-ramp and accelerated to beat the traffic. Now, it’s important to remember that this level of build-quality, technology, safety and opulence comes at the cost of weight. At 5,450 pounds you cannot throw the Flying Spur around in corners; instead,

you have to roll it in and allow the weight to settle and then use the enormous power to pull you out. As is appropriate with these mega-cars, the electronics do a stellar job of giving you exactly what you want without you realizing it’s happening. The eight-speed gearbox means you are always in the right gear and the suspension can be set to one of four modes. And, of course, there is nothing like a Bentley to make you feel like you own the world.

$215,800 | 6.0L twin-turbo W12 | 616 hp | 0–60: 4.3 seconds Top Speed: 200 mph | Transmission: 8-speed automatic | Torque: 590 foot-pounds

BENTLEY MULSANNE As both a Brit and a Le Mans driver, I think that you have to have the right pedigree to call any car a ‘Mulsanne.’ That incredibly long stretch of public road that we get to race on each year at well over 200 mph is unique in this world, and once experienced is never forgotten. It is, therefore, completely fitting that Bentley have the Mulsanne as their flagship car. Driving around LA you don’t exactly nip in and out of traffic as much as command it to move out of your way. The hood seems long and it takes a bit to get used to the dimensions of this magnificent

Bentley. But once you do, the Mulsanne seems to shrink, and you can begin to appreciate the adjustable suspension and how the engineers spent countless hours instilling athletic abilities. Perhaps the true link to the famous race in France comes when you hit the gas. The acceleration is outlandish for the mass, and if you had room, the 6.75-liter, 505 horsepower bi-turbo V-8 would swoosh you and your mates to a top speed of 185 mph.

BUGATTI VEYRON LEGENDS EDITION

Black Bess A Bugatti Veyron Legend Edition is perhaps the most audacious demonstration of how a car can capture the ultra high-end imaginations of the uber-rich. There are six unique Veyrons that form the ‘Les Legendes de Bugatti,’ and they are a tour de force of ultimate luxury and un-worldly performance. Of each of these six, there are three units being made for purchase worldwide. Here is the sign of the times we now live in—every one of them was sold before the full line-up of models was even disclosed to the public. All six cars are based on the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. Their 8-litre W-16 powerplant is coupled with four turbochargers to produce 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 foot-pounds of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic sends power to all wheels, a 253 mph force to be reckoned with.

Recently, at the Quail Motorsports Gathering, I was lucky enough to see the six versions up close, and they are extraordinary. It wasn’t just the combination of the design elements and visual cues that made their display extraordinary, but the way they were presented to the fans. Each car had beautiful male and female models standing next to them all wearing bespoke clothes, watches and accessories from Bugatti’s exclusive line of clothing inspired by the legends. And, if you are the lucky buyer, you will have them made especially for you as an exclusive addition to your Veyron Legend lifestyle. So the car that is already faster than any other, more expensive than most and rarer than a unicorn, just became even more desirable. Almost impossible, but not for Bugatti.

CHEVROLET CORVETTE Z06

2015 Muscle Car

A highly-anticipated American vehicle that has outrageous power, GT racing levels of down-force and the handling of a supercar? It can only be the 2015 Corvette Z06. I did a feature on the Corvette racing C7.R at Le Mans this year which focused on the successful technology partnership between Pratt & Miller and the GM engineers. This extends to almost every area of the car and it proves that racing is still the best ‘hothouse’ for fast track development of technology. And why is this good news for us? Well, starting with the fact that the down force figures on the Stingray were the best ever by a GM vehicle, the Z06 will stun that statistic into submission. The front splitter is as wide and pronounced as regulations allow and the complex body panels feed the air

back over a stylish and effective rear spoiler. There are also the two functional intakes just above and in front of the rear wheels that feed air to the drivetrain, lessons learned from the demands of the race program. But people will likely talk most about the engine and the herculean level of power and torque that the Z06 will hit the roads with. The LT4 supercharged engine will deliver a minimum of 650 horsepower and 650 foot-pounds of torque. In the short space of time since the ZR1 hit our roads with a vengeance the Z06 looks like it will be a most eligible successor. Just meaner, faster and even better looking.

CHEVROLET CAMARO Z/28 Chevrolet only produced five hundred Z/28 Camaros in 2014, and they sold out within minutes. Back by popular demand, the Z/28 for 2015 will be limited to 2,500 cars. The Z/28 package began in 1967 as a performance package aimed at road racing. In order to build a modern trackready Camaro, a diet was needed. Thinner window glass, combined with the loss of all non-essential luxuries, results in a 300-pound weight savings compared to the ZL1. A basic radio with one speaker remains, and air conditioning is optional. With several potent aerodynamic changes,

the Z/28 adds more than 410 pounds of downforce at speed. Compiling the best parts available for the Z/28, the Brembo carbon brakes from the ZR1 are 15.5 inches (front) with six piston calipers. Pirelli Trofeo R tires measure 305 millimeters at all corners, one of the widest front tires of any production car. Under the hood is the 7.0-liter hand-built LS7 V-8. This potent 427-cubic-inch small block offers 505 horsepower and 481 foot-pounds of torque. The end result is lapping a wet Nürburgring in 7:37.

CHEVROLET SUPER SPORT We begged for it last year, and our wish has been granted. Chevrolet’s Super Sport is the fastest four-door to ever wear a bow tie, and receives a proper manual transmission for 2015. The six-speed stick is borrowed from the CTS-V, and joins the six-speed paddle-shifted automatic. Magnetic Selective Ride Control is now standard and allows for track and street modes. Torque and horsepower from the 6.2-liter V-8 remain conservatively rated at 415. Our favorite feature is Competition Mode. It allows for more rotation through corners and less intrusion of the 14-

inch Brembo brakes via the stability system. One of the best interiors Chevrolet has ever offered includes two big heated and ventilated front seats and almost 40 percent of rear leg room. Black leather with Alcantara surrounds you while the 4C LTE hotspot keeps you connected. A full-color HUD displays performance data, directions and music information to keep your eyes on the road. If you need comfortable seating for five adults, six gears, eight airbags and nine Bose speakers, Super Sport is the only car for you.

DODGE CHALLENGER SRT HELLCAT Of any car now on sale, the Hellcat is the most fun. I recently shot it for an episode of World’s Fastest Car Show and it really was fast. Dodge and SRT engineers spent a great deal of time to make this a muscle car for our time. It is extremely well built and materials both inside and out are of a certain quality that adds to the experience. But saying all that, the Hellcat is all about power and performance. 707 horsepower makes this the most powerful production muscle car ever built. It is the first ever supercharged engine to come out of the Dodge brand and combine that

with a very adept gearbox, whether manual or automatic, and you have something very potent indeed. I loved driving the Hellcat around town. People stared, waved and appreciated it. When I got the car out on the track, I could literally do with it as I pleased. Tight controlled cornering or flat out drifts were all mine. My only question comes when looking at the price; it seems too low for a car that makes you feel this high.

DODGE VIPER The Dodge Viper is the very car that I owe my racing success to, more than any other. Seeing one instantly sends me back to happy memories. Now, as it was then, the Viper represents something unique in the lineup of fast cars. It is wildly overpowered, requires an application of both talent and concentration to drive and is not exactly practical. But those challenges are what make it so much fun. For 2015, aficionados of the marque are celebrating as it is once again known as the Dodge Viper. Fittingly, it gets even more power, tuned to 640 horsepower and 600

foot-pounds of torque. Once you drive a Dodge Viper you will understand why people rave about them. The cockpit wraps around you in the way a tremendously fast car’s should. Turning the key ignites the huge 8.4-liter V-10 like a detonator, and the whole car rumbles in anticipation of high-speed motoring. Once you get familiar with the feel of the Viper you can really push hard with confidence, just treat the limits with respect. It is an anomaly in an otherwise sensible world, and that is a great thing.

Industry Trends

SAFETY: NHTSA has mandated that backup cameras will be mandatory on all new vehicles by May of 2018. As such, every manufacturer is embroiled in a compe on to oer more safety features than their compe tors. Pre-collision braking and lane departure control can be found on everything from the Abarth to the Zonda, and everything in between.

For Model Year 2015, several changes are becoming more prevalent in the exo c car market.

POWER: Once derided as engine killers, turbochargers have been perfected as an eďŹƒcient way to add power. Turbos allow the manufacturer to downsize their engine size and increase power simultaneously. Ferrari de-stroked the California’s engine from 4.3L to 3.8L, and two turbos. The result was a gain of 100 HP and 200 -lbs of torque. GEARS: The decision Porsche made to drop the manual transmission op on from the GT3 shows the dominance of double-clutch automa cs. While they oer be er fuel economy and performance than tradi onal automa cs or manuals, dual-clutch transmissions are complicated and expensive to produce. Conven onal automa cs will con nue to add more gears to push fuel economy into uncharted territory. Corve e’s new eight speed automa c allows for 29mpg (highway) and a quicker jump to 60mph compared to the op onal seven speed s ck. HYBRID SUPERCARS: The future is here. With cars like the P1, 918 Spyder, and LaFerrari adding electric motor/generator/ba ery systems, they bring more power (and eďŹƒciency) to the pavement than we have ever seen. The signiďŹ cant reduc on in greenhouse gas produc on demands that this technology be more widely adopted. MAGNETIC SUSPENSION: Developed by GM and ďŹ rst seen in 2002, Magnetorheological (or MR) shocks use iron ďŹ lings suspended in the shock oil to instantly change viscosity when provoked by a coil of wire receiving commands from the computer. While being a Corve e mainstay since 2003, the technology has been adopted by almost all manufacturers. The ability to instantly change your car’s handling is a gi from above. SAYONARA STEEL: Aluminum and carbon composites are becoming much more aordable to produce, which is driving a supercar trend of shedding weight and adding safety. The 2015 Ford F150 joins Audi and Range Rover in the all-aluminum body club. The term ‘Rust Bucket’ has hopefully been lost from the lexicon. MPG WARS: In the quest to achieve more miles per gallon, expect to see very sleek designs in the near future. Subtle changes like integrated trunk lid spoilers and belly pans to smooth the undercarriage are being seen from many manufacturers. Flush mounted glass and transmissions with 9 speeds or more will make your dollar go farther.

FERRARI 458 SPECIALE 2015 Favorite Track Car

When Ferrari put the adjective ‘Speciale’ in after a car as outstanding as the 458 you know it must be pretty, well, special. Since I first drove the 458 I have maintained that it is the finest car of its genre ever made. Each and every experience was better than the last and it represents everything I think a Ferrari should be: amazingly fast, exotic, laden with the latest technology and a vehicle that makes you feel better about life. So how is this Speciale going to improve on that? It has more power. It’s lighter. It shifts faster. It turns in quicker. It stops in a shorter distance. It has more technology. It makes you faster. That’s quite a list of achievements, but at certain moments during my test-drive, each and every one made an impression on me. Upping the power from 556 to 597 horsepower may not sound like a

lot, but in tandem with the Speciale being 200 pounds lighter you can definitely feel it when you hit the gas. And when you do, all sorts of unworldly things happen. The unmistakable wail of the Ferrari V-8 is measured by the LEDs atop the steering wheel. Those lights tell you when it’s time to shift, which you do in literally the blink of an eye. If you measure such things, you likely just went past 60 mph in less than three seconds. Cornering at pro-driver levels is made possible by the complex side-slip control, which measures and reacts in such an impressive way that it’s almost too much for mere mortals to understand. But feel the benefits you will. All you need to know is that the electronically controlled rear differential and the traction control are in constant communication, analyzing your driving style and levels.

FERRARI 458 SPIDER Unsurprisingly, the Ferrari 458 Spider remains unchanged going into 2015. Ferrari isn’t the type of company to fix something that isn’t broken, so the 562 horsepower 4.5-liter V-8 remains wrapped in arguably one of the best looking convertibles on the market. What is surprising, though, is that this means the 458 family is a year past the usual model cycle. The extra year of life could mean that Ferrari is cooking up a replacement, which looks set to debut later in 2015. Ferrari hasn’t confirmed the rumors, but with a certain rival British super car company now producing

a 650-horsepower spider, Ferrari’s rebuttal is expected sooner rather than later. With the California recently gaining a turbo, a similar approach might be taken with the 458’s replacement. To hold us over, a Speciale version of the Spider seems like the next logical choice. We would love to see a 597 horsepower convertible track monster take on the upcoming Huracán Spyder. Competition breeds innovation, and the future is looking bright in Maranello.

FERRARI CALIFORNIA T It is important to remind yourself that the Ferrari California T is a GT car. As in, it’s a Grand Tourer in the traditional sense. Driving around town is very easy, competent and efficient, which may sound a bit boring, but it’s not meant to be. Obviously the car looks fantastic and people will check it out, but when you are just heading to run an errand you want your vehicle to achieve that without heroics. I was personally happy that the California T was so functional for everyday use. But show the car enough room and it reminds you it was designed to eat up long fast roads with style and speed, not just perform at the max for short bursts. The best way to drive the California T is to let the car do all the work, as it certainly knows how. My favorite moments came when driving in third/fourth gear, sweeping corners that allowed the seemingly constant torque range to launch me from one to the other. The small twin-scroll turbos spool up quickly and deliver huge amounts of power almost immediately. With no lag above 2,500 rpm, you can smoothly, but energetically, roll back on the gas and balance the car mid corner for a fast exit. I like the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It makes the right noises on a downshift in sport mode, but perhaps what will impress you most is what you don’t feel: those irritating bumps and ripples from the road. This eligible touring Ferrari absorbs them like a pro without giving up performance when pushed hard in corners.

People often ask about ceramic brake discs on a road car and how they work at slower speeds. They come standard on the California T and with a bit of temperature in them they are amazing. That heat will be easy to generate, as drivers tend to enjoy spirited bursts of acceleration. The best part? Doing all this with the top down. My advice for the complete California experience is to find any excuse for a drive out of town, head somewhere for a great lunch with a friend and roll into those sweeping turns. Or, skip lunch, and just keep going.

FERRARI F12 BERLINETTA Ferrari’s grandest of tourers, the F12 Berlinetta, remains the same heading into the new year. At only two years old, the F12 line is still relatively young with no major plans for a change in the near future. But if the life of the 599, the car the F12 replaced, is anything to go by, expect FXX and GTO-like variants down the line. Up until LaFerrari stole the show, the front-mid mounted 6.3-liter V-12 found in the F12 was Ferrari’s most potent engine at 731 horsepower and 508 foot-pounds of torque. With little sense of adding significantly more power to an already outlandish-

ly potent engine, keep an eye out for aero tweaks. Between the F12’s air bridge at the base of the A-pillars and the temperature sensitive brake cooling ducts, the F12’s heavily aerodynamically influenced design makes a good baseline for enhancements later in its life. The F12 Berlinetta is the last Italian V-12 Grand Tourer. One of the most powerful cars on the market does not need turbochargers or a hybrid system; it needs a driver who can appreciate the engineering and finely crafted luxuries that Ferrari’s flagship has to offer.

$330,000 (estimated) | 6.3L V-12 | 731 hp | 0–60: 3.0 seconds | Top Speed: 212 mph Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch F1 | Torque: 508 foot-pounds

FERRARI FF The FF is a Ferrari for people that want to do more than pose. This is for people that want to live with their Ferrari as an everyday delight. Of course, the DNA is all performance. With 730 horsepower from the 6.3liter V-12 and a top speed in excess of 200 mph, you are not giving up the thrill of Italian motoring. It is most definitely a four-seater, but you may forget that should you find yourself on a fast open road. The FF is lightning fast with two transmissions to match. You can adapt the driving mode to suit you or the road; whatever your choice, it leaps into

action under heavy acceleration. The FF is Ferrari’s first production allwheel- drive car and, thanks to some very clever engineering, it allows the traction control to have precise control over where the power goes. The FF looks like my dream concept of what a station wagon should be: muscular and practical with aggressive aerodynamics, letting bystanders know this is not just for school runs.

FERRARI LaFERRARI In replacing the Enzo, LaFerrari has undoubtedly become the pinnacle of Ferrari and is part of a grand new age in the supercar world. With a name that translates, quite literally, to ‘The Ferrari,’ excellence is a given. Ferrari’s most technically advanced vehicle ever sports a 789 horsepower V-12 coupled with an F1 derived hybrid unit capable of 161 horsepower on its own. The revolutionary HY-KERS system uses a generator on the engine, lithium-ion batteries under the floor and an electric motor on the transmission. This energy saving system also cuts greenhouse gas

emission by 40 percent. Gasoline and electricity work together to provide the driver with instantaneous electric torque as well as the high-revving horsepower we all know and love. Active aerodynamics also play a big part in LaFerrari’s styling and performance with a hidden air brake and speed-sensitive diffuser. Oddly enough, Pininfarina played no part in the styling, marking a truly rare occasion for Ferrari. Rumor has it there are other versions in the works for 2015. Stay tuned.

FORD MUSTANG GT This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Mustang. An all new sixth generation model does away with retro styling in favor of an edgy, modern design. Engineers and designers worked alongside each other to produce a lower, wider and more aerodynamic vehicle. The classic 2+2 cockpit has a symmetrical layout with the SYNC and MyFord Touch infotainment dominating the dash. Engine choices include the stalwart 300 horsepower 3.7-liter V-6, the 435 horsepower V-8 and, for the first time since 1986, a turbocharged four cylinder. The EcoBoost 2.3-liter creates

310 horsepower, and is priced as the midlevel offering between the base model V-6 and the V-8 GT. The manual and automatic transmissions both feature six gears, and the solid axle rear is gone in favor of a fivelink independent suspension. For a proper anniversary, the 50 Year Limited Edition will consist of only 1,964 cars, since the automotive Mustang was born in late 1964. All will be Polo White with chrome trim and louvered quarter windows. History repeats itself, and the new Mustang is a smash hit.

GALPIN FORD GTR1 The Ford GT’s limited run made them instant collectibles. Now, a decade later, Galpin Auto Sports has stepped up to build a lighter, more powerful and civilized interpretation of a classic. Adding five inches of width and almost a foot of length has allowed for more creature comforts along with improved aerodynamics. Losing the supercharger and adding two giant turbochargers allows the 5.4-liter V-8 to push out 1,024 horsepower and 739 foot-pounds of torque. That level of power combined with the sleek all-aluminum body provides a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds and top

speed of 225 mph. Braking via big carbon rotors only requires 18 seconds from 200 mph. To showcase their prowess in coachbuilding, Galpin has spared no expense on the interior. The cockpit is awash in hand- crafted leather from Bridge of Weir and machined aluminum. Sound and heat insulation were strategically placed along with a McIntosh audio system. Unencumbered by the overhead of a large automaker, Galpin is offering the body in aluminum or carbon fiber, with pricing for the latter starting at $1,024,000. If Ford built the GT today, this would be it.

HENNESSEY VENOM GT

Is the Hennessey Venom GT America’s ultimate supercar? Speed tycoon John Hennessey has certainly made a strong bid with this Texas tornado. Of course, it’s only fitting that Hennessey would take the car to one of America’s most iconic landmarks, the Kennedy Space Center, to test its mettle. Hennessey Performance has made its name over the years as an unrivaled house of aftermarket genius. This time, Hennessey has broken the mold with its Lotus Elise-based creation. So how juiced up is the Venom GT? Let’s start with the Chevrolet 7.0-liter V-8 twin-turbocharged engine capable of producing 1,244 horsepower and 1,155 foot-pounds of torque. With an engine like that, the only limit is space. Wait, let me rephrase that; the only limit is the length of the tarmac. Hennessey proved just that with the first test of the Venom GT back at a Naval

base in California, where it ran out of runway before hitting its top speed. Cue the calls to Kennedy Space Center, home of the 3.2-mile Shuttle Landing Facility. What happened next is written in history books. John Hennessey keeps offering for me to drive the Venom GT, and, for many reasons, I should take him up on it. Even if I only drive in a straight line it would likely be the fastest acceleration I have ever experienced outside of a racecar. The Venom GT is capable of racing from 20-120 mph in just 7.71 seconds, which is pretty swift. If I had the room, a top speed around 270 mph would be possible. Obviously, the market for aircraft-speed supercars is not large, but it is fantastic that Hennessey keeps pushing the barriers in the true tradition of the speed pioneers, and that we all get to watch.

ICON BRONCO When the Bronco was first manufactured in 1966, I’m sure few foresaw its future in the realm of ‘niche transportation,’ yet in its current restomod state, as fashioned by ICON, that is just what it is. No longer does it simply put the ‘utility’ in ‘Sports Utility Vehicle.’ It’s become a fashion statement. Boasting LED lighting, stainless steel trim and a Volcanic black powder coating, this $150,000 feat of engineering is a statement piece. Its Warner five-speed manual transmission offers an effortless gear shifting experience. Its Coyote 5.0-liter V-8 engine sourced from Ford is the same as those featured in the Ford Mustang GT. No doubts in my mind that 412 horsepower gives it the kick it needs.

ICON FJ My time in the ICON FJ was second to none. In the land where black Range Rovers are considered part of the uniform, the Icon FJ stood out for all the right reasons. Aeronautically inspired dash panels, aluminum knobs and Marine-rated vinyl seats make tough trendy, yet the FJ still manages to make its war era compatriot, the G-Wagon and the dudes in big shades behind the wheel, look downright prissy. With its 5.3-liter, 350 horsepower Chevrolet V-8 engine, Dynatrac Dana 60/40 based axles and disc brakes on all four wheels, a test-drive through Zombieland would be a walk in the park. As far as legends go, I’d say this one lives up to the hype, and will continue to do so.

ICON THRIFTMASTER Based on the classic 1950 Chevrolet 3100 series pickup truck, the ICON Thriftmaster is vintage with a twist and downright powerful to boot. Pull up next to it at a stoplight and you may just underestimate it for a well-crafted piece of automotive art—nothing more, nothing less. You, of course, will be left in the dust scratching your head at the next green light. Boasting a supercharged 5.3-liter LS V-8 capable of putting out 435 horsepower, this reincarnation has come a long way from its previous life. The torque is what impressed me the most. With 450 foot-pounds of it and a six-speed Tremec manual transmission to put it to the road, I always enjoy the view of gaping mouths from my rearview mirror.

JAGUAR F-TYPE R COUPE Forget the performance statistics, the aluminum trimmed dashboard and the impeccably crafted leather seats. Forget the Gyrodyne Alloy wheels and the carbon ceramic brakes. They just don’t matter when a car sounds unbelievably good, and believe me, the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe sounds that good. Oh, it has a 550 horsepower 5.0 liter supercharged V-8 engine? All I care about is that it makes that noise, that rumble that sends tingles through my spine and reverberates through my ears. I mean, what really makes a great car? Its active differential

with torque vectoring? Its sport suspension with active dynamics? Sure, those things don’t hurt, but do they matter when you grab a set of keys in the morning? Okay, so they do. But I will never pass up a chance to drive a car that sounds as good as the F-Type R. I will never pass up the opportunity to feel as alive as the engine makes me feel when the 550 horsepower it produces passes through its quad exhaust pipes. And I know that I love the Jaguar F-Type R coupe.

JAGUAR XKR-S COUPE Take the same supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine powering the XFR-S sedan and the Range Rover, put it in a two-door model and you have the blisteringly fast XKR-S Coupe. However, this time the engine will shoot the car from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, while maintaining the limited top speed of 186 mph. Like the XFR-S, the XKR-S has plenty of carbon fiber to go around. The front splitter, rear diffuser and rear lip spoiler are all composed of the lightweight, yet strong material. The Carbon Fiber Exterior Package includes carbon-fiber trim on the lower trunk-lid finisher,

side power vents, door mirror caps and hood louvers with the “Supercharged” script. The interior of the XKR-S is what you would expect from a two-door Jaguar model. The performance-styled seats have poweradjustable side bolsters to support driver and passenger during hard cornering. There are a number of luxurious, yet sporty trim and veneer options available for the interior, including the fantastic ‘Dark Linear Aluminum.’ With two doors, a massive amount of power and a smooth ride, the XKR-S Coupe is an absolutely thrilling British experience.

JAGUAR XFR-S SEDAN There are not many automotive manufacturers willing and able to produce a performance four-door vehicle. But Jaguar’s XFR-S model is a perfect example from this model category. Even with four doors and a larger size, the 2015 Jaguar XFR-S is as menacing and powerful as they come. The revised front fascia is highlighted by a carbon-fiber lower grille flanked by larger lower openings. New brake cooling ducts can be found below the headlights. In the rear is a functional carbon-fiber diffuser, accompanied by four exhaust tips that are part of the perform-

ance sport exhaust system. To rocket this car from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds is a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine. This is the most powerful Jaguar V-8 engine, giving the driver the ability to access 550 horsepower and 502 foot-pounds of torque. Drivers will also have a limited top speed of 186 mph. Inside, the XFR-S is as roomy as you would expect from a four-door, but just as sporty as a two-door. In terms of space, passengers and power, ‘the more the merrier’ is a fitting phrase for the XFR-S.

KOENIGSEGG ONE: 1 I thought the space race ended in 1969. Apparently, I was wrong; today the race is between manufacturers instead of countries. With NASA and Roscosmos being surpassed by Elon Musk and Richard Branson, the likes of Bugatti and Koenigsegg are still going strong, making rocket ships of their own. Who would have thought that the superpowers of today would hail from Sweden and France, making cars with enough horsepower they’d propel themselves skyward and towards Mars had they not mastered the concept of negative lift. Koenigsegg’s latest con-

tender for the next mission to Mars is the One:1. It’s the first ever car with a 1-to-1 horsepower to weight (in kilograms) ratio, which cemented the car’s status as THE super car to beat. Add in the fact that 1,340 horsepower actually makes it the first ‘mega’ car in that its output is equivalent to 1 megawatt. Is the One:1 a well-rounded speed machine that can handle as well as it accelerates? Only time will tell; we’ll just have to wait to hear from the six lucky buyers that will have the chance to put it to the test.

LAMBORGHINI ADVENTADOR

So you like the Lamborghini Aventador? Then you’ll like what 2015 brings to this iconic Latin superstud. We were delighted with last year’s LP720 anniversary edition, but it proved to be a one year only horsepower rating. This year, the LP700-4 returns with 700 hp and 507 foot-pounds of torque at all wheels. The single clutch automated manual transmission remains, but it is more civilized for 2015. The Aventador encapsulates all that is good about Lamborghini. Built on the reputation of wild styling and exclusivity, it throws incredible power and a composite construction into the mix. On the front end, lifting struts raise the very low nose for additional ground clearance. Along the rockers and floor pans, air is channeled to cool the massive carbon brakes and provide additional downforce.

Perhaps out of necessity, the integrated rear wing extends at high speed to balance the overall aero package. The back features an aggressive diffuser to settle turbulent air from the undercairrage. Of course, in the end we love to know the performance statistics, and a sub-3 second 0-60 mph time should satisfy anyone. The Aventador is at the end of its four-year cycle, so a performance model would bring the best of everything to the performance table. With carbon-fiber being already the staple material of choice, the next step would be to strip out weight by introducing a more hardcore, race-themed styling. Also, I would welcome a new exhaust that would be lighter and even more imposing, which is tough to imagine!

LAMBORGHINI HURACÁN LP 610-4 I must admit that the prospect of driving Lamborghini’s latest offering gave me mixed emotions. Obviously I knew this extraordinary vehicle would be pretty handy in a performance setting, but what would it be like on everyday open roads?

2015 Best Exotic

Once I got over the “Wow, I’m driving a quarter-of-a-million-dollar Lamborghini” sensation, I was able to settle into what the Huracán is all about. It was a controlled, extraordinarily fast and precise driving experience in every situation. It all starts in the right way when you climb into this outrageous looking car. I have never flown a jet, but I imagine this is what the automotive equivalent should look and feel like. Nothing gets the blood flowing more than feeling like you’re heading into combat when starting your car. I am a huge fan of steering wheels that not only look and feel good, but that also offer a tactile connection with the car that makes you and it feel as one. The moment you pull off, you realize this car is anticipating everything you are about to throw at it. The V-10 spins up at what seems an impossible rate, and before you know it, you’re bouncing off the rev limiter at more than 8,250 rpm. With each gear change, your speed over the ground threatens to hit naughty numbers. In the Huracán, I felt the Lamborghini seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox was as good as any: lightning quick both up and down, even when relying on the shift logic automatic.

Now, seeing as this was all taking place on flowing canyon roads, I should point out I was in the Strada (road-going) of the three ‘ANIMA’ settings. The combination of more moderate shifts and friendly traction control intervention made pushing on at a swift pace sustainable for as long as there was gas in the tank. It certainly made me smile all the time. As I mashed the gas, the magnificent engine noise reverberating off the canyon walls felt like I was doubling the enjoyment. I got into a crazy fast rhythm, and the Huracán was in its all-wheel-drive element. And then I took it on the track. In Corsa mode. And the world spun a little bit faster. Whereas other cars seem only modestly different when switching from one performance mode to another, with the Huracán you feel a significant personality shift when going from Strada to Corsa. But you had better be ready to handle it. The car is stiffer, the traction control disappears and the noise is louder every time you touch the gas, which is also quicker to respond. For me the Huracán was outrageous when unleashed. I could push it to the absolute limits and it would hold its line through the corners, as long as I respected the AWD and gave up a little on corner entry to get back on power early for a fast exit. Amazing in every way. Sexy and supernaturally fast, it makes you feel the same way about yourself.

LAMBORGHINI VENENO ROADSTER

Every year we see bulls with palpable power run rampant in the streets of Pamploma, Spain. Seemingly uncontrollable, chaos drives these beasts of nature. With the release of the Veneno Roadster, the masters at Lamborghini have bridled the beast and handed over control to a lucky few drivers. From the Countach to the Aventador, the House of the Raging Bull has mastered the art of the ultimate supercar, and the Veneno Roadster is the best of the best. Cashing in at $4.5 million, the Veneno clearly has high expectations to live up to, and does so in spades. Pair the car’s lightweight shell with Lamborghini’s legendary 6.5-liter 12-cylinder engine, and the Veneno is a sub-3-second Italian bullet. Lamborghini certainly loves carbon fiber’s weight savings, with seemingly every part of the Veneno constructed from it. Monocoque? Check. Body panels? Check. Seat back? Check, and let me tell you,

the carbon-fiber seat back is an absolute must, considering the car’s neck thrashing, seven-speed, single-clutch, ISR automated, manual transmission. Don’t get me wrong, this is the most enjoyable neck thrashing anyone can experience. So how do these 3,285 pounds of mean machine motor around the track? Superbly. The car’s laydown, pushrod-actuated suspension and all-wheel-drive system offer an unbelievably responsive and stable ride. Paired with the upgraded aero package from the Aventador, the Veneno sticks solidly to the road, and does it in style no less. But, seriously, let’s get down to the dirty basics. This is a car that has 740 horsepower, almost 60 horsepower more than the Aventador, and a top speed of 221 mph. And, only nine will ever be made. I’d say that’s enough to make it the crown jewel in the Lamborghini paddock.

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER AUTOBIOGRAPHY BLACK Land Rover’s iconic Range Rover turns 45 in 2015, and they’re celebrating with a few changes to the full-size models. The infotainment system has been revised with the addition of InControl Apps, which can interface with iOS and Android devices. A new panoramic roof with powered shades is optional on both long and short wheelbase models. New puddle lights project the Range Rover’s silhouette onto the pavement. The Supercharged and Autobiography long wheelbase models have an option for 22-inch wheels. Launched last year, the Black series is the

epitome of elegance. Highlights include massaging and reclining seats, powered accessory tables and a wine chiller. Both rear seats recline to 17 degrees and have powered footrests. Last year’s 510 horsepower supercharged V-8 and eight-speed automatic are coupled with full-time four-wheel drive. Terrain Response 2 controls ride height and locks all three differentials to keep you comfortable. With a bespoke interior and rugged drivetrain, you can lie back, watch a DVD and receive a shiatsu massage as your driver is fording 35 inches of water.

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT SVR With a long history of blurring the distinctions between hardcore off road brutes and posh boulevard cruising SUVs, Land Rover’s Sport model combines the best of both worlds. Aluminum is the magic metal the supercharger is comprised of, as are the engine, transmission, wheels and unitized body. With a focus on weight savings and 542 horsepower on tap, the Sport accelerates like a muscle car and is less likely to get stuck when the pavement ends. More than half-a-million Sports have been sold since 2006, breathing new life into the brand.

Changes to the Sport’sSupercharged and Autobiography editions for 2015 are incremental, pending the upcoming launch of the new Sport SVR. In a July press release, Land Rover formally announced the SVR as lapping the Nürburgring in a blistering 8:14, just as fast as the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG. As the flagship for an SVR series of Land Rover and Jaguar products, the body features many changes to optimize aerodynamics and cooling systems. True to form, it retains the twospeed transfer case and the ability to ford 33.5 inches of water.

LEXUS RC F Exhilarating, breathtaking and unmistakable—meet the new Lexus RC F. Pumped with the beating power of 460 horses from its 5.0-liter V-8, and enough torque to put you in your seat, the RC F is currently the most intense road-machine Lexus is offering to the public. Expected to arrive on the market by autumn this year, this beauty deserves the best. If the ‘F’ badge ever began to feel a little stale on the Lexus regiment—fear not—the RC F is more than just a ‘re-awakening.’ The RC F is serious about its place on the road and on the track; it even includes a speed

activated rear spoiler. A beautiful interior and stunning exterior may give the impression that this car is more ready for you than you are for it. Designed for the skill level of any driver, the Lexus RC F is built with ingenuity and purpose. Even the electronics can be modified, with the on-board touch-screen capable of enhancing performance. Sporting 19inch forged aluminum wheels, the subtle details upon the exterior alone will be enough to turn heads on any road.

LOTUS ELISE S Driving enthusiasts with the fantasy of channeling their inner Niki Lauda discover a Holy Grail when finding a road-legal racecar. The Lotus Elise can be considered that Grail, if you’re not scared off by the lack of power windows. In the day of 1,000 horsepower supercars, 200 horsepower may not scream ‘high performance,’ but the engineers at Lotus have certainly applied the track to this street racer. Case in point: the oft-forgotten, but always key, weight figures. Weighing in at a mere 1,900 pounds, 217 horsepower is more than enough. The Elise has none

of the electronic ‘nanny aids’ that we’ve come to expect in this day and age. But that isn’t a bad thing; I always turn them off anyways. So, it comes as no surprise that the Elise has given me some of my most enjoyable driving experiences. In a day when luxurious refinements such as heated seats and GPS navigation are valued at a premium, ‘minimalistic’ may be, to some, a dirty word. I say, ‘Minimalistic, schminimalistic.’ Every time I get out of the Elise, I have the same silly grin my son has when driving his go-kart.

LOTUS EXIGE S It’s hard to imagine that a car only slightly bigger than my son’s Hot Wheels could be considered ‘hardcore,’ but that’s exactly what the Lotus Exige is. Designed for drivers by drivers, the engineers at Lotus spared no conveniences when it came to packaging this track beast. Cutting the fat is what they do best, and the result is impressive. The saying ‘less is more’ is absolutely applicable to the Lotus Exige—less horsepower, less weight, less creature comforts, less legroom, more perfection. Sure, on paper the small engine and relatively low horsepower output may seem

anything but hardcore. Take it to the track, however, and what’s left is raw, heart-pumping performance. That’s the magic of the power to weight ratio. So your Porsche 911 GT3 makes 475 horsepower? With only 345 horsepower, I’m not fazed. Topping out at 2,380 pounds, the Exige has a fair fight ahead of it. Throw in the car’s unparalleled dynamic abilities, and a fight is the Exige’s to easily win. Bottom line, this may be one of the purist handling cars that I have ever driven. Now, that is hardcore. (Photos shown are the LF1 package to celebrate Lotus’ F1 Heritage.)

MASERATI GHIBLI S Q4 Elegant yet fierce, Maserati’s styling is far from stagnant. The Maserati Ghibli S Q4 wants everyone to know that it not only represents the luxury of Maserati, but also sets an unprecedented tone for performance. With adjustable pedal height, intuitive interior design and a phenomenal artillery of performance, the Maserati Ghibli S Q4 is simply brilliant. One would think speaking about the Ghibli S Q4’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 and 404 horsepower would be the shining light of the vehicle’s performance. Maybe one would think, instead, that the Ghibli S Q4’s top speed

of 174 mph or its 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds would be the core of its performance extravagance; however, the drivetrain is the true gem of this Maserati. Normal road conditions will receive rear-wheel-drive, but should those conditions change, power will be pushed to the front in a matter of milliseconds. This rapid conversion to all-wheel-drive is where Maserati’s passions for safety and performance converge in one brilliant innovation. With an exterior bound to turn heads and an interior that will ‘wow’ just about anyone—the S Q4 is built for you.

MASERATI GRANTURISMO The Maserati GranTurismo is intended for sport and bestowed with comfort and luxury. A silky smooth 4.7-liter 454 horsepower V-8 with 383 footpounds of torque and a ZF six-speed automatic provide power for any situation and a throaty growl. Stab the throttle and the dual-mode exhaust opens into a high-pitched scream. Instead of grouping many control systems together with a few settings, the GranTurismo allows the driver to tailor the magnetic suspension, traction control and other systems individually. As a proper GT car, the engine is well behind the front axle, delivering

a perfect 49/51-percent balance. A flowing exterior was carefully sculpted to control airflow above and below the body. Inside, four elegantly contoured bucket seats are emblazoned with the Trident logo and flanked by a full-length center console. Driver and passengers are bathed in hand-stitched leather while Alcantara covers all other surfaces. Maserati is celebrating their centennial this year with a special edition. With a host of interior and exterior changes they will be instant collectibles. Some say that certain cars are built for the road, but with GranTurismo, roads are built for this car.

MASERATI GT CONVERTIBLE MC Once again, Maserati’s attention to detail and impeccable engineering offer the public only the finest in comfort, performance and luxury in the 2015 Maserati GT Convertible. It is fitted with the same 4.7-liter V-8 engine that pumps 454 horsepower and 376 foot-pounds of torque through its veins. The most apparent quality of this vehicle is in its pristine interior, where passengers and driver alike feel no less than superb surrounded by elegant styling and exquisite comfort. The Maserati Multi-Media System touch screen is centered higher in the dashboard for better visibility and ease-of-

use, and the Maserati GT Convertible is also fitted with a precision climate control function. If it’s too cold outside for the top to go down, you can still enjoy a warmer climate inside. If you were wondering about the extra weight that might affect the GT Convertible’s handling, there’s no need to fear. The convertible top is so well designed that the weight is practically negligible, and the car's front to rear weight distribution is near equal with only a slightly larger load over the rear axles.

MASERATI QUATTROPORTE GTS

When people ask me what I think about recent cars from Maserati, the first thing I mention is the engine noise. It’s a deep fantastic roar that is especially thrilling for the driver. Now, with the Quattroporte GTS, the rest of the car can keep you as entertained because, if it’s a high-powered salon you are after, the GTS is a bonafide alternative to the class leaders. The GTS can hit 191 mph thanks to the 3.8-litre V-8 twin-turbo, which is as fast as any competitor’s, and was developed by the cool factor of Ferrari. Each shift is executed by the dominant aluminum shift paddles and the 8-speed gearbox is crisp and precise. The GTS is a rear-wheel drive vehicle and has lovely wide tires to put the power down. I was happy that I could get the car to break away a bit under full power, and equally impressed

that the GTS handled fast sweeping turns with sporty spirit. Being almost a mid-engine, turn-in was surprisingly fast and the steering very direct. I think the combination of performance, an unrivaled interior quality and a soul satisfying sound makes the Quattroporte GTS a worthy contender. Borrowed from the new California T, GTS offers a balanced 523 horsepower and 524 foot-pounds of torque. That amount of power in such an elegant disguise will allow it to reach sixty mph in 4.6 seconds, besting many other luxury sedans. At only 3.8 liters of displacement, fuel economy will also be surprising to the old guard.

MCLAREN 650S COUPE I was lucky enough to drive the original McLaren F1 in 1995 at Le Mans alongside my father, Derek Bell, and Andy Wallace. The F1 stood for everything a supercar should be. It was of bold design and revolutionary technology, and, to be honest, the coolest car I have driven in my life. And as we are seeing now in the extraordinary sale prices set for this limited edition automotive masterpiece, it captured the imagination of many people over the past two decades. Last year, I got to drive the MP4-12C at the Fontana Speedway, and while I was amazed at how hard I could push this highly anticipated successor to the F1, I was left not knowing whether I was more blown away by my experience driving or with the technology. Fast forward a year and I have my hands on the 650S. As the saying goes, a lot changes in just a year. I am old mates with McLaren’s chief test driver Chris Goodwin, and I know he has worked tirelessly to allow the 650S to silence the few select criticisms of its predecessor. His goal was to enhance that connection from driver to car, and just make it faster. So what do I really like about the 650S? People stare at it like they are seeing something very special, but they’re not quite sure what it is.

The cockpit for the driver is selfish. It’s all about me. The carbon-fiber sports seats are the best I have ever sat in. As a top industrial designer once said to me, “Design and technology are the new definition of luxury.” Well then, that makes the 650S opulence incarnate. The V-8 3.8-liter turbo is a class leader with 641 horsepower. It’s also an outrageous amount of power to handle, which leads us to the driving experience —the part I liked the most. The core-strength of the 650S is a carbon-fiber monocoque that gives the car an immediate advantage in terms of rigidity and ultimate performance. Pair that with the double-wishbone suspension and Formula One developed electronics, and you have a package born to be fast in more ways than one. Driving out of Los Angeles in traffic the 650S is as easy to operate as a sedan. It absorbed the demands of a poor road surface without complaint, yet it was so immediate in its reactions that you never forget this is a car ready to be driven fast. And driving the 650S fast is not hard to do. Switching to Sport, then Track mode made me feel like I was piloting a racecar in terms of both mindset and application. The lack of roll with such a high level of grip allowed me to push harder each lap, constantly modifying my throttle and steering inputs to maximize corner speeds. Trusting in the carbon-ceramic brake package to counter the tremendous straight line speed was so rewarding. Just like a racecar.

McLAREN P1 2015 Super Car

The $1.15 million 2015 McLaren P1 captured the ultra-high end imaginations of 375 very wealthy people, selling out even before the first one was delivered. Why? Because it just might be one of the most amazing cars ever built. As an automotive racing team, McLaren have won everything over a 50year span by being technology leaders, and that level of intensity and innovation is distilled down into its purest form with the P1. Two engines working in perfect synchronicity, the extraordinary lowend torque from the 176-horsepower electric motor propels you off the line while the 727-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 delivers the kind of throttle response and high-revving power that befits a supercar. You can also drive the P1 in full electric mode for up to six miles. Every McLaren road car uses a carbon-fiber monocoque. With the P1,

the body panels are also of the same material, keeping the dry weight down to 3,075 pounds. But when you hit the track in the P1, the aerodynamics will blow your mind. It works actively, with the rear wing and underbody flaps adjusting when needed to help you through the corners, and if you switch to ‘race’ mode the P1 drops by two inches, creating true ground-effect suction. At the same time the rear wing moves back almost 12 inches. At that point, all you have to do is hold on. The P1 is arguably the best carbon-ceramic brake package on any road car and an amazingly intuitive traction control system. I don’t think there is a car you can drive faster and still feel it has more unexplored performance potential.

MERCEDES-BENZ G63 AMG 6X6 Unbelievably specialized off-road equipment coupled with the AMG touch makes the Mercedes Benz G63 6x6 as much of an off-road beast as it is a luxury SUV. The exterior portrays an off-road machine, but the interior is equipped with the same luxuries found in the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG SUV. These interior marvels include a Designo leather interior, 10-way adjustable seats, a high-resolution touch screen and intuitive functionality, to only name a few. The added machinery of the G63 AMG 6x6 brings with it a few more horses, as well as upgraded suspension components. The 5.5-liter bi-turbo V-8 gives out 544 horsepower. The only in its class, defining off-road fused with luxury—that is the G63 AMG 6x6.

MERCEDES-BENZ ML63 AMG In the normal world, midsize SUVs and crossovers are built to resemble their full-sized brethren and are based on a front wheel drive sedan chassis. Mercedes chose the road less traveled, shrinking their GL to a more manageable size without compromising luxury or power. AMG fitted their ubiquitous 5.5-liter V-8 with two turbochargers and the 7GTronic automatic transmission. When fitted with the performance package, torque is a stump-pulling 560 foot-pounds at only 2,000 rpm. Horsepower peaks at 557, and is routed through a full-time all wheel drive system. AMG has chiseled sharp edges into the soft ML’s exterior, with larger front air intakes and brake cooling ducts. If you need a compact SUV with the heart of a supercar, the ML63 is for you.

MERCEDES-BENZ SLK55 AMG The SLK55 AMG is the only roadster to exhibit fine attention to detail and an exquisite exterior style coupled with comfortable interior controls, all wrapped around a hand-built 5.5-liter AMG V-8. Sporting AMG’s torque-vectoring suspension technology, this hard-top convertible will never miss a beat. The Mercedes Benz SLK55 AMG’s naturally-aspirated V-8 produces 415 horsepower and 398 foot-pounds of torque all fitted to the 7-speed dual-clutch AMG transmission. 8-way power sport seats, Attention Assist, which detects drowsy behavior in a driver and signals an alert, climate control and a convenient central control panel are all found on the inside of the SLK 55 AMG. A pleasant cruiser and a nimble champion of the road, the SLK55 AMG is an unbeatable ride.

Overall, the cabin gives off an athletic vibe, especially through the seating. Meanwhile, the precise stitchwork, abundant amount of fine leather and high-tech equipment exude luxury. While many may be sad to see the end of production for the SLS AMG, the new Mercedes AMG GT is a more than adequate replacement. Now, the next step is for Mercedes to release a Black Series edition.

With production of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT ending, a slot has opened up in the German automaker’s lineup for a supercar. This is where the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT comes in. The Mercedes AMG GT has a new powerful AMG 4.0-liter V-8 bi-turbo engine, the M178, beating as its heart. Everything that AMG has learned from their motorsports experience has been translated into this engine for everyday use. It produces 503 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 479 foot-pounds of torque. With a dry sump lubrication system instead of a conventional oil

MERCEDES-BENZ C63 AMG The Mercedes C Class is defined as a compact executive car. Some might qualify it as ‘entry-level,’ but there is nothing entry-level about this vehicle. Let’s put aside the fact that it’s an AMG for a moment. The C-Class is an overachiever at the most basic level. Its shape was honed in the wind tunnel, its engine perfected at the racetrack. It’s a Mercedes; of course it’s darn near perfect. Add the magic of AMG, and you’ve got a veritable piece of genius German engineering in your hands. A rival of the legendary BMW M3 and the Audi RS5, the

Mercedes C63 AMG has a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that produces 487 horsepower and 443 foot-pounds of torque. In efforts to finally put the C63 AMG vs. BMW M3 debate to bed, Mercedes upped the ante in the drivability department by intently focusing on handling dynamics, rather than brute power. The result is completely redesigned steering, brakes, suspension and electronic stability control, making the new C63 AMG hard to argue against. When it comes to delivering a true competitor to the BMW M3, the Mercedes C63 AMG has done just that.

MERCEDES-BENZ CLS63 AMG All hail the power of a little friendly competition. The luxury four-door coupe market is stacked with talent constantly pushing the competition. As a result, the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG has pushed further than ever before, and it shows. Competing with the Audi RS7, BMW Gran Coupe and Porsche Panamera Turbo, the CLS AMG is playing against heavy hitters. With the newest iteration of the CLS, Mercedes brought its ‘A’ game to the battle. To start, the super sedan’s AMG 5.5-litre V-8 bi-turbo engine not only packs 550 horsepower, it does it with remark-

able efficiency. None of the CLS63 AMG’s competitors can come close to its low fuel consumption numbers. But I was blown away by the efficiency with which it put the power to the road. Combined with its 4Matic all-wheel drive system, the bi-turbo engine powered the CLS63 from a complete stop to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and it can handle its way around the track better than an Aston Martin Vantage. By the end of the day, it was easy to forget that the CLS63 is, in fact, a four-door.

MERCEDES-BENZ E63 AMG S 4MATIC SEDAN When you take a peek at the top of Mercedes-Benz’s E-class model range, you’ll find exactly what you were hoping to wake up and drive every morning. The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S 4MATIC Sedan is the flagship of AMG’s new ‘S’ series. All of the optional AMG performance content is now standard, yielding 577 horsepower and 590 foot-pounds to a revised 4Matic AWD system, meaning 60 mph arrives in less than four seconds. The ability to overtake purpose-built race cars is blended with state-ofthe-art safety and technology. Inside the cabin is a sport-oriented sight of

luxury. Buyers that don’t opt for the carbon-fiber interior trim are given three choices of handcrafted wood. Nappa leather covers 14-way adjustable front seats and machined aluminum controls are pleasing to the touch. For the discerning driver, a Designo interior offers tailor-made exotic packages for leather and wood. These examples of old-world craftsmanship and civility are punctuated by three controls of the AMG Drive Unit. Dialing in the correct combination of transmission, suspension and traction control unleashes one of the fastest sedans ever built.

MERCEDES-BENZ GLA45 AMG Now this is a car I can get excited about. Mercedes has long focused on luxury, and they’ve done a very good job of it. The right combination of performance and comfort, Mercedes is the no brainer choice for the rich and famous seeking a car that checks all the right boxes. The C Class is exceptional, from the C250, to the C300, C350 and the C63 AMG, and don’t forget the coupe, sedan or wagon options. But, with the GLA45 AMG, they have a true game changer on their hands. Hold the sparkling water, I’ll take a Red Bull when I’m behind the wheel of the GLA45 AMG.

The added caffeine gives me the kick I need to match the world-record performing 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. Producing 355 horsepower and 332 foot-pounds of torque, this little dynamo creates 172 horsepower per liter, putting it on par with the world’s most powerful supercars. Add in AMG’s performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and high-performance braking system and I’ve started fantasizing about establishing the Mercedes Formula Drift and GRC racing teams, with me behind the wheel, of course.

MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS COUPE For Mercedes, ‘S-Class’ has come to stand for flagship. With the introduction of the new S-Class Coupe, I think it’s safe to say the ‘S’ now also stands for ‘sexy.’ Largely the same as the S-Class concept unveiled at auto shows last year, the design is undeniably striking. But even more striking is the coupe’s first-ever active curve tilting function. The curve tilt function allows the car to actually lean into corners at angles of up to 2.5 degrees. The result is pure road-carving-pleasure equal to strapping on a pair of skis with a significant side cut and laying down an epic

line. To make this possible, Mercedes installed a road-scanning camera as part of its Magic Body Control Adaptive Suspension. Magic it is. Even when it’s not being used aggressively through twisting canyon curves or banked corners on the track, I found that the system even managed to minimize road imperfections for a remarkably smooth ride. Couple that wizardry with the twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8 power plant and lavish, yet aggressive, design touches, and you’ve got a certified champion on your hands.

MERCEDES-BENZ S65 AMG Every aspect of the new Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Sedan is over the top. Heated shiatsu massages are available in all seats, with the right rear fully reclining to offer a panoramic view of the sky. Both rear seats have touch screens, headphones and independent audio and video. Ambient interior LED lighting can be tuned to any color desired, while 24 Burmeister speakers are able to produce 3D sound from any source. An illuminated glass vial inside the glovebox atomizes one of four fragrances into the vents at preset intervals. Heated armrests and door

panels, along with a refrigerator between the rear seats, ensure all occupants are happy. Moving 5,000 pounds of opulence is accomplished by a 6.0-liter V-12 making 621 horsepower and 738 foot-pounds of torque. Your driver will enjoy the ability to reach 60 mph in 4.2 seconds with complete manual control of the seven-speed automatic transmission. Front brakes measure a staggering 16.5 inches, and are among the largest passenger car brakes in the world. The power, the prestige and the innovation it brings with it all define the Mercedes Benz S65 AMG.

MERCEDES-BENZ SL65 AMG ROADSTER The SL65 AMG Roadster was engineered specifically to fuse the driving spirit with what it means to own a luxury vehicle. It packs 630 horsepower and 738 foot-pounds of torque, all from the 6.0-liter V-12 bi-turbo engine, aided by AMG’s calibrated adaptive hydraulic suspension system. A streamlined exterior rests upon 19-inch alloy wheels, giving the car an aggressive yet enticing appearance. The retractable hardtop boasts a panoramic glass sunroof that can dim and lighten on command, and going topless is always an option. A new safety feature incorporated with

Mercedes-Benz’s Distronic Plus cruise-control system allows the SL65 AMG Roadster to sense the speed of traffic and adapt to traffic conditions. This means the cruise-control system will brake and accelerate for the driver when stuck in traffic. If that wasn’t enough to pair sport with luxury, the SL65 AMG Roaster is also equipped with a high-resolution color display, which allows hands-free interaction. When spirits are high, and the roads are unbeatable, the AMG Drive Unit offers three different drive modes and suspension adaptations to fit its true sports car profile.

MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION

I immediately associate the Mercedes-Benz SLS with having a rip-roaring good time at the expense of someone else’s tires. But now, with the launch of the SLS Final Edition, it appears that unless I buy one, those sideways good-times are soon over. As you can imagine the SLS Final Edition is an even more refined version of the previous SLS models, but every bit counts. The engine is the same glorious 583 horsepower, 6.3-liter naturallyaspirated V-8, but the double-clutch seven-speed gearbox has the faster mapping of the GT version. Carbon fiber is present everywhere, from the hood, to the splitter, rear wing and more, with the overall vibe conveying that this is a serious goodbye for the SLS. As you can imagine, the interior is all Mercedes-Benz

luxury with a high-speed twist of carbon-fiber trim and a little plaque with your place in the 350 limited edition line-up. Mercedes always makes their flagship super cars as easy to drive around town as an S-class. But change your mindset and get into manual mode, and the SLS will become every bit as naughty as you want it to be. I went out of my way to find a tunnel so I could hear, actually ‘feel,’ the sound waves projecting from my car. It was mesmerizing and exciting, and probably scared a few people. To take advantage of the space on a racetrack, it was back to long fabulous noisy drifts and a hand and throttle ballet. The SLS Final Edition is a great way to say goodbye.

Well balanced with 362 horsepower and 361 foot-pounds of torque from a BMW 4.8-liter V-8, the Plus 8 Speedster will always provide enjoyment during a spirited drive. NISSAN GT-R NISMO Exquisite lines, red accents, an unparalleled legacy and a place as one of the world’s most capable performance vehicles do not even begin to describe the prestige of the Nissan GT-R Nismo. Each 3.8-liter TwinTurbo V-6 is hand-crafted by a select team of masters known collectively as ‘Takumi.’ Nismo engineers stiffened the chassis and added Bilstein’s DampTronic coil over a suspension formerly only available in top level Porsches. Non-essential weight was removed, and Dunlop racing rubber provides more grip. Pumping 600 horsepower and 481 foot-pounds of

torque to all wheels, the tarmac will see no mercy. Everything is refined and the interior provides comfort and unrivaled exclusivity. The GT-R Nismo is made for the track, and is equipped with RECARO racing seats that are stiff yet comfortable, a specially designed 11-speaker BOSE sound system and a multi-function display system that provides the driver with technical information. PAGANI HUAYRA To say that Horacio Pagani has an affinity for carbon fiber would be an understatement. His patented ‘carbotanium’ combines the best features of carbon fiber with titanium and it saw extensive use in the Zonda R. The Huayra is almost entirely composed of the lightweight material. With only 2,900 pounds to deal with, the AMG twin-turbo V-12 is not stressed. When provoked, it unleashes 730 horsepower and 738 footpounds of torque through an automated single-clutch sequential transmission. What allows the Huayra to be the fastest car around Top Gear’s

track is an array of active aerodynamic surfaces that change with speed and cornering angle. This allows the Pagani Huayra to reach up to 231 mph, and provides a 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds. Anything that’s not carbotanium is made of titanium, with Pagani’s logo machined into each piece. This level of detail carries over into the interior. Aluminum trim is satin brushed and provides a brilliant contrast to glossy carbon fiber and two-tone leather. Every aspect of the interior is curved and symmetrical, evoking the sophistication of a bygone era.

PANOZ ESPERANTE SPYDER 25TH ANNIVERSARY To celebrate their 25th anniversary, Panoz has released an Esperante Spyder with no compromises. Don Panoz and his group of motorsports mavericks have been a force to be reckoned with at Le Mans and founded the American Le Mans Series in 1999. An incredibly stiff chassis is formed from extruded aluminum with tubular-steel subframes for the powertrain. Body panels and interior are comprised of carbon fiber and aerospace aluminum. A fully independent suspension sports double adjustable coil-overs with 14-inch brakes and six-piston calipers. Engines

are supplied by Elan Power Products, who builds blueprinted versions of Ford’s Coyote V-8 (rated at 430 horsepower) and the LS9 from Cadillac’s CTS-V (575 horsepower). New for 2015 is a bespoke interior wood package. Sixteen species of hardwood are CNC machined into beautiful and functional interior trim. Saebelt carbon-fiber seats are covered in any color leather you desire, while the Kenwood entertainment system offers Pandora and Bluetooth. Every aspect of the car can be built to order, and customer is involved in every decision, from deposit to delivery.

Acura NSX Aston Martin DP-100 Another concept intended for the video game ‘Gran Turismo 6’ is brought to life, but this time it’s Aston Martin’s DP-100 taking the stage. First unveiled at the Goodwood Motor Show, the DP-100 is one of the most exotic concept designs to date. Blatantly breathtaking, the DP100 provides an unexpected surprise.

The Acura NSX prototype has already been track-tested at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, but little is known about the projected performance. The exterior styling is more than just a make-over and far from a revival—it is a bold revolution.

Cadillac CTS-V With heavily camouflaged prototypes racing around the ‘Ring,’ Cadillac is poised to launch the third generation of their Corvette powered supercar. Our friends at TouriClips have captured the unmistakable supercharger whine and V-8 rumble as the new V lays down a blistering lap. With the coupe and wagon bodies cancelled after 2015, our best hope is the option for manual transmission.

Concept With many fantastic luxury and exotic cars still in ‘concept’ mode, we decided to dedicate a bit of space in this issue to give you a glimpse of ‘what’s to come’ or at least things to dream about.

Jaguar C-X17 Crossover With the integrity of Jaguar styling from top-to-bottom and all of Jaguar’s latest technologies, this Crossover’s proposed design is the ultimate in efficiency, luxury and sport. Jaguar spotlights two foldout trunk seats when the rear tailgate is open, challenging the traditional flat-bed pick-up truck.

Maserati Alfieri Maserati’s continuous redefinition of style has only been enhanced further by unveiling the Alfieri, which is expected to launch in 2016. A 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 that pumps 404 horsepower will give the Alfieri aggressive power to match the exterior styling, which still adheres to the Maserati fashion. 114

Mercedes Benz Vision GT Mercedes is not actually going to produce the concept; instead, five Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GTs will have their bodies sculpted and transformed to look precisely like the Vision GT. Developed for the videogame Gran Turismo 6, the Vision GT will be derived for the hands of five lucky customers.

Mercedes Benz Pullman S600 The Mercedes-Benz S600 Pullman will be rolling luxury on an extended wheelbase. Very little is known about the future of the S600 Pullman, but there’s one thing for sure: it will represent all that Mercedes Benz stands for as a luxury manufacturer.

Cars

Chevrolet Camaro We know that work on a new Camaro is nearing completion. Based on the Alpha platform that underpins Cadillac’s ATS, Generation VI Camaro looks to be a lean and potent pony car. The directinjected LT1 6.2-liter V-8 and eight-speed automatic from the Stingray will find their home in a lighter and more nimble chassis. Extensive use of aluminum will offer better mileage and performance, just in time for a 50th anniversary model.

Toyota FT-1 This spiritual successor to the Toyota Supra can be imagined to represent how flying a rocket exceptionally low to the ground might feel. Toyota’s innovative design tears the word ‘ordinary’ away from the entirety of the FT-1’s styling and one can only assume the FT1 will exceed expectations.

PORSCHE 911 TARGA 4S Just when you think you can’t be surprised by a Porsche 911, they reinvent the classic with a modern twist that makes you fall in love again. I am, of course, talking about the 911 Targa. I have always regarded it as a compromise in the lineup, neither one thing, nor the other, unmistakable, yet without its own true identity. At this year’s Detroit auto show I saw this reincarnation of a classic up close and personal, and I was impressed. The exterior design has somehow brought a cool factor to the large B-pillar hoop by making it a design cue to be embraced, not hidden. I love the convex, wraparound rear window, which seamlessly connects the roof to the rear, and the huge rear tires give the 911 Targa 4S an enticing athletic stature. While I am normally more about the driving experience than how a roof works, this power top is extraordinary when in action. It is so clever and complicated I actually looked around to make sure I had an audience to watch it transform from open, to closed, and back. As with the other all-wheel drive 911s, the new Targa 4S has wider track and rear bodywork and a purposefully clean interior that is both nostalgic and current.

116

2015 Exotic Car Buyers Guide

www.duPontREGISTRY.com

Of course, the whole roof assembly equals more weight, and at 240 pounds heavier than a 911 coupe, the suspension has been tuned to compensate accordingly. As I drove the Targa around it never felt harsh. In fact, such is the talent of the Porsche engineers. I really felt I had the best of both worlds. Even though the chassis is supposedly half as rigid as a coupe’s, I never felt it let me down, even when pushing hard. Loads of rubber on the road, AWD and the exhilaration of ‘almost’ open air driving meant every sense was occupied in a great way, so perhaps I didn’t notice and/or care anyway. Shifting gears using Porsche’s PDK is always fun, and in Sport mode the faster shifts and throttle response mean you drive the Targa with the same gusto as any other 911. This is the new 911 Targa 4S, and it’s proud of it.

PORSCHE 911 TURBO S There’s a reason the Porsche 911 is used as a benchmark for nearly all sports cars. On paper, a rear-engine performance car shouldn’t work, but the guys from Stuttgart have been proving everyone wrong for 50 plus years now. And for about 40 years, they’ve been doing so with the help of turbochargers. Porsche’s range topping Turbo S model gets the job done with a 3.8-liter flat-six turbo good for 560 horsepower and 553 footpounds of twist. Decades ago, that kind of power coming from a 911 was a surefire way to induce a notorious 911 mid-corner spin. This generation

of the Turbo S offers active aero and all wheel steering. At low speeds the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels to create quicker turn in, but at high speeds the rear tires turn with the front ones to keep a tighter line. With Porsche reaching a point where they’re getting all they can from the engine by itself, don’t be shocked if 918 hybrid technologies make their way into the 911 in the very near future.

PORSCHE 918 SPYDER

2015 Car of the Year

Another car at the top of my ‘must-have’ list is the Porsche 918. Not because it has an incredibly complex, gasoline-electric, hybrid driveline and can operate in your choice of front, rear or all-wheel drive. Not even because it has a combined 887 horsepower and 944 foot-pounds of torque, which allows it to race from 0-62 mph in 2.5 seconds. It’s at the top of my list because it is one of the most all-around interesting, challenging and ultimately rewarding cars I have ever driven. Ever. In an urban environment I knew I was driving an amazingly futuristic and expensive vehicle that handled the mundane rather well. No surprises apart from the automotive shudder when the gasoline engine suddenly cackles into life when the battery dies down. It does a great job of reminding you that driving around town in EV mode is cool and all, but that if you

happen to have a racetrack nearby, life can get way more exciting. To get the most out of lapping the 918, you have to respect and understand how to get the most out the technology, as it requires a unique driving style. To get a fast lap-time you must push hard while the battery charge is up and ease into the brake zones, not simply smash them hard. It’s a thinking-driver’s car at the limit, which is going to make mastery of its nuance in pursuit of outright pace a reward in itself. Porsche has created the car of tomorrow, today, and the 918 will forever change our perceptions of what a car can do.

Two seats. Moves the entire automotive world forward. At Porsche, performance isn't a box to be checked. It's our undying passion. It's why we refuse to accept the notion that there's such a thing as too much performance. Exhibit A: the 918 Spyder supercar. A total power output of 887 hp. 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds. And a top track speed of 213 mph. Our constantly pushing limits has resulted in nothing less than the pinnacle of sports car performance. And, motivation for an entire industry. Porsche. PORSCHE BOXTER GTS All new for 2015 is the addition of the GTS to the Boxster lineup. Sitting at the top of the range, the GTS gained considerably more power and Porsche’s Active Suspension Management System for the new year. Rated at 330 horsepower, nearly 120 more than the base model, and 273 footpounds of torque, the Boxster GTS becomes the car that it always should have been. By no means is the base Boxster a slouch in the corners, but you always got the sense that there was so much more potential to be had from a mid-engine sports car. The Boxster has been touted as one of this

generation’s best driver’s cars; the GTS goes even further to highlight that accolade. If you prefer three pedals, the GTS offers a six speed manual in addition to the PDK automatic. Black 20-inch Carrera wheels and smoked daytime running lights combined with the gaping air intakes make the GTS as sleek and sophisticated as they come. Fully loaded, the GTS is several thousand dollars less than a bare bones 911, and it’s ready to hit the track.

$77,460 | 3.4L H6 | 330 hp | 0–60: 4.6 seconds | Top Speed: 174 mph Transmission: 6-speed manual, 7-speed automatic PDK | Torque: 273 foot-pounds

PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO S With the Cayenne outselling the 911, Boxster and Cayman, Porsche went the route of ‘less is more’ with a facelift for the 2015 Cayenne Turbo S. In the quest for better aerodynamics, larger grille openings are flanked by canards to smooth airflow to the intercoolers. LEDs play a more prominent role in the redesigned head and taillights, and the tailgate has been smoothed. Big exhaust tips are now integrated into the rear bumper for a sleek appearance. Under the sharpened hood, expect to see the twinturbo 570 horsepower 4.8-liter V-8 from the Panamara Turbo S wedged

up front. More than 553 foot-pounds of torque make acceleration simply brutal. With a base price of $146,000, a fully-loaded Turbo S arrives at $169,925. That price gets you every feature, from the Porsche Dynamic Light System to a trailer hitch, and includes such favorites as Burmester audio, adaptive cruise, lane departure and four-zone climate control. If you don’t need to reach 60 mph before everyone else, the Cayenne also offers an innovative plug-in hybrid, in addition to a thrifty diesel option.

PORSCHE CAYMAN GTS The GTS is the newcomer to Porsche’s lineup for 2015. A significant amount of power is gained compared to the base model, as well as a few more horses than its Boxster brethren. Porsche managed to squeeze 340 horsepower and 280 foot-pounds of torque out of the Cayman’s 3.4-liter flat-six. Porsche Torque Vectoring puts that power to the track by using the inboard brakes along with a locking differential. As in the Boxster GTS, a six-speed manual transmission is still available. Aesthetic changes going into 2015 include different paint options, Park Assist and an Alcantara

interior. The upgrades over the base model include a reworked front end accompanied by a new rear spoiler. But it’s the power that really makes it all worth it, and not just because more power is always welcome. It signifies that Porsche is ready to give the Cayman the performance it deserves regardless of how close it gets to the 911 in lap times. Ask any driver who has ever hit an apex, and they will tell you that the Cayman is their car of choice every time.

$79,160 | 3.4L H6 | 340 hp | 0–60: 4.5 seconds | Top Speed: 177 mph Transmission: 6-speed manual, 7-speed automatic | Torque: 280 foot-pounds

PORSCHE GT3 When I heard that around 80 percent of Porsche GT3 owners attended track days in their cars, it made me realize that you have to approach the GT3 with a more competitive mindset. For example, the GT3 only comes with the lightning fast PDK transmission, which, to many, is a crime. But, seeing as the PDK is faster than any human and gives a competitive edge on the race-track, it makes sense the GT3 would utilize it. And Porsche has made it even faster for the track in this car, with shorter gears that fly up and down rapidly. Amazing, especially as you can take it all the way to

the 9,000 rpm redline. But it is in the turns that the GT3’s true magic makes itself known. The subtle yet effective rear-steering system allows you to carry massive corner entry speed and still hit the apex every time. Getting on the gas to exit then becomes a matter of bravery and skill. The GT3 is perhaps one of the most capable, rewarding and confidence building road/track cars ever built. And, lucky you, one can become yours.

PORSCHE MACAN TURBO The compact-Crossover segment is a densely populated one, and in 2015, the room is going to get even more crowded with Porsche’s entry, the Macan. As standard practice at Porsche dictates, a Macan Turbo will also be available. It’s Porsche’s prerogative to create the most powerful sports car in every class they enter, and the crossover segment is no exception. Much like how Porsche silenced the critics about putting an engine in the back of their car, there were also doubts about Stuttgart’s SUV efforts. Again, critics were silenced when the Cayenne turned up and performed

well beyond any expectations. Now, picture a Cayenne, but smaller. The Macan is every bit as capable, it just sports a smaller footprint. It comes powered by a 400 horsepower 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6, which peaks out at 6,000 rpm. Pricing for the Turbo starts at just over $72,000, but as Porsche’s standard practice also dictates, additional options add up and can easily see the Macan Turbo to a price tag well over $100,000.

PORSCHE PANAMARA TURBO S EXECUTIVE Making its way into the lineup for 2015 is the Panamara Turbo S Executive. With the S model going above and beyond the base turbo in the power department, the Executive focuses on those who prefer to be chauffeured. The body has been stretched 15 millimeters for a backseat experience unlike any other. Any driver will appreciate the 570 horsepower 4.8-liter twin-turbo V-8, but the VIP in the back will love the 4.7 inches of extra leg room even more. And, because time is money, it’s almost certain that everyone will enjoy the 0-60 mph sprint of 3.7 seconds. Along with the

extra leg room, passengers in the back will also be able to enjoy ventilated seats, a power rear sunblind and thermal/noise canceling windows. Established Executives should take note: Porsche is doing it better. With the Executive trim, the Panamara will easily see the north side of $200,000. But, we have a sneaking suspicion that if you’re opting for the Executive Panamara, you likely won’t mind writing that check from the back seat.

ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST SERIES II If you have seen one of these around, you may have been wondering if a car as big and imposing as the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II is for more than just show. It is. They have such road-presence that it is definitely on my ‘If I win the lottery’ list. The engine is magnificent, with a 6.6-liter 12-cylinder twin-turbo powerplant generating 593 horsepower and 575 foot-pounds of torque. The transmission is a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic that uses satellite aided GPS to analyze the road ahead and select gears based on that information. The suspension has been revised and updated with

redesigned struts, new steering gear and a Dynamic Driving Package that tops off the improved handling with adjusted dampers. Don’t be surprised when a Ghost Series II looks more agile on the road than its size would indicate. Exterior details are subtle, yet important, with larger front air intakes and contemporary LED daytime running lights. Technology and luxury intertwine in the interior, and the latest of both can be yours without any loss of the traditional Rolls-Royce character and style.

$305,300 | 6.6L twin-turbo V-12 | 593 hp | 0–60: 4.8 seconds | Top Speed: 155 mph Transmission: 8-speed automatic | Torque: 575 foot-pounds

ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST V-SPECIFICATION You know when Rolls-Royce adds a letter after the name it represents something special. To celebrate the Ghost’s fifth birthday we get the Ghost V-Specification, limited in production as it should be, and as bespoke in detail as one would expect. Being a Rolls Royce, buyers are seeking something to reflect their personality and individual style. Choosing the paint could take some time, as there are 44,000 options, as well as five V-specific hues to jazz it up with. Doorsills feature bespoke engraving, the armrests are embroidered and a special steel inlay was

used for the front multimedia screen lid. Deluxe glamour is not the only thing the Ghost V-Specification will make you feel. Rolls-Royce engineers have refined the 6.6-liter V-12 to produce 593 horsepower with 80 percent of its torque available from idle. I know in the world of sub-4 second 0-60 mph times, the Ghost V achieving 4.8 seconds doesn’t sound too impressive. But, bear in mind, it weighs almost 6,000 pounds. So in reality, getting off the line looking like royalty on a rampage is indeed quite magnificent.

ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM DROPHEAD COUPE There is something so romantic about the notion of the Drophead coupe. Sitting behind the wheel of this piece of art feels more like you are flying at 35,000 feet in a Gulfstream G650. The company’s yachting inspiration is evident in every aspect of the Drophead’s gorgeous design. To start, the Drophead’s large proportions evoke a nautical feel. Combine that with the teak rear deck and wind whipping through your hair and the theme is complete. As always, the Drophead seamlessly meshes timeless design features with state-of-the-art technology. Take, for instance, the thin-

rimmed three-spoke steering wheel and old-fashioned analog gauges featured in the same space as LED headlights. Impressive as that all is, what impressed me most was the drivability of a luxury car rivaling the size of a large SUV. Featuring a 6.7-liter V-12 engine capable of producing 453 horsepower and 531 foot-pounds of torque, the Phantom Drophead Coupe is actually remarkably responsive when you step on the throttle. The power is impressively passed to the rear with a seamless 8-speed automatic transmission.

$474,600 | 6.7L twin-turbo V-12 | 453 hp | 0–60: 5.6 seconds | Top Speed: 150 mph Transmission: 8-speed automatic | Torque: 531 foot-pounds

ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH With the introduction of the Wraith in 2013, Rolls-Royce reincarnated a specter of its past. Originally produced from 1938–1939, the Wraith somewhat strayed from convention in that Rolls-Royce only produced the chassis and then sold it to independent coachbuilders to complete. Today, the Wraith is unquestionably a powerful car, featuring a 624 horsepower twin-turbocharged V-12 engine. I was able to power it from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Unlike most Rolls models, which have been specifically tuned to minimize engine noise in the interior, the Wraith comes with an option to

pipe the roar directly into the cockpit through its Naim audio system. Those departures aside, one major element of the Rolls-Royce design scheme remains largely the same: the size. While the Wraith is seven-inches shorter than the Ghost, the car is still longer than its competitors. It is also wider than most mid-sized SUVs. In terms of maneuverability, the Wraith resembles a boat more than an Italian sports car. But, despite having to guide a 5,500-pound beast through the corners, the steering wheel was remarkably light in my hands but incredibly accurate and reassuring.

ROSSION Q1R For an all-out race car, Rossion’s engineers removed every ounce of material that didn’t belong on the track. The basic layout is similar to the street model, and they share some of the same materials. Carbon-kevlar composite body panels are bonded directly to a tubular-steel space frame. A fully independent suspension features Koni double-adjustable coil-over shocks that are easily adjustable on the car. For the track day warrior, the Q1R is lower, lighter and faster than its sibling. Engine choices are a 500 horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, and new for 2015 is the EcoBoost

2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. This new option makes 323 horsepower and 305 foot-pounds. A logical choice, as Q1R only weighs 1,850 pounds. Air conditioning and entertainment are sacrificed for weight savings. Racing bucket seats are protected by a Nascar-style impact cage with provisions for the HANS device. A carbon-fiber switch panel replaces the dash and alludes to the true nature of this machine, the last coachbuilt American race car. Combining the latest in turbocharged Ford engines and composite bodies makes the Q1R the best dedicated racer money can buy.

ROSSION Q1 STREET Our hearts were broken when the Noble M400 ended production. Rossion was founded to revive and modernize the design, and their latest models are the new American supercars. The current lineup includes one street model dubbed the Q1, and two flavors of a track model known as the Q1R. If racing is not your primary goal in life, the Q1 Street will serve you well. While you can purchase the Q1 as a rolling chassis, the standard powerplant is the Ford 3.0-liter V-6 turbocharged to 521 horsepower and 508 foot-pounds of torque. With air conditioning and a Kenwood audio system, total vehicle

weight is only 2,300 pounds. The interior is richly appointed with Alcantara, leather, carbon fiber and machined aluminum. Additional luxuries include a tilt/telescopic steering column and full instrumentation. With a dedicated production facility in Palm Beach Florida, rest assured that the air conditioning and engine cooling can handle sweltering temperatures. Rear-engined cars are stigmatized as uncontrollable drift machines, but the Q1’s precise suspension geometry and low center of gravity work with the traction control system, keeping you planted on the pavement in all situations.

SALEEN FOURSIXTEEN Many journalists decried the electric car as the death of the performance industry. Steve Saleen has now proven otherwise with his version of the Tesla Model S. In order to build a track-capable sedan, extensive aerodynamic changes include new front and rear bumpers, hood, rocker panels and an aggressive chin spoiler. Saleen has installed a locking differential and increased the gear ratio from 9.73 to 11.39, allowing for quicker acceleration. A completely bespoke interior includes a new console, four race inspired bucket seats, sport steering wheel and acres of contrasting two-tone leather. The top-level package is their Black Label edition. Saleen has combined old world craftsmanship and aftermarket performance to create an electric supercar.

SHELBY 427 COBRA Fifty years ago, Carroll Shelby began work on the most iconic roadster of all time: the 427 Cobra. If you have dreamed of owning a classic Cobra, Shelby American will build you a new one customized to your every liking. Using original tooling, the body is fashioned in either aluminum or hand-laid fiberglass. Reproduction Halibrand 15-inch knock-off wheels wearing Goodyear Eagles complete the nostalgic look. Engine specs are not published because the 427 Cobra is BYOBB, or bring your own Big Block. For under $40,000, your Cobra arrives prepped to receive a Ford FE engine and four-speed transmission. If you dare, Carroll Shelby Engine Company builds an aluminum 482ci stroker that makes 540 horsepower and 565 foot-pounds of torque.

SHELBY DAYTONA COUPE 50th ANNIVERSARY In 1964, Carroll Shelby commissioned Peter Brock to build a coupe version of the Cobra roadster. Having far better aerodynamics, it won eight of eleven races for the ‘65 season. This year is the 50th anniversary of that winning design, and Shelby American is producing a limited run of coupes in aluminum or fiberglass. A hand-fabricated tubular-steel frame with integrated roll cage is TIG welded for rigidity. The race-winning independent suspension is updated with modern coilover shocks and the same big brakes from the roadster. Power rack-and-pinion steering is connected to 18-inch Halibrand pin-drive wheels for a nostalgic look. Out back, a stainless 21-gallon fuel tank will allow you to race all day. Inside you will find Alcantara and leather along with power windows and air conditioning.

SPORTCHASSIS P4XL The SportChassis P4XL unites luxury crafted amenities with the power of a single axle freightliner chassis. New for 2015 are four colors and two redesigned interiors. Inside you will find a new passive keyless entry system, USB ports and a push-to-start ignition. Driver and passenger both ride on Italian leather Bostrom seats with Serta cooling gel cushions. The entire cab is lined with Dynamat for a whisper quiet ride. Infotainment is handled by Pioneer with a 7-inch touch screen and component speakers throughout the cab. Secondary entertainment is provided by the Jacobs

engine brake with an earth shattering roar. Riding on a 174-inch wheelbase, the P4XL is 264-inches long and 100-inches wide. To move such a beast, an 8.3-liter Cummins ISC diesel provides 350 horsepower and 1,050 foot-pounds of torque; more than eight times the torque of a Lotus Elise. An indestructible Allison automatic transmission offers PTO ports for future flexibility. The primary focus of SportChassis is to build the finest line of heavy-duty pickups in the world and they have led the market by pushing the standards of cross country haulers to new heights.

TESLA MODEL X PERFORMANCE The Model X is being developed from the full-size sedan platform of the Tesla Model S, and will be produced at the Tesla factory in Fremont, California. Production was initially scheduled to start by the end of 2013, and later postponed several times. As of February 2014, the company expects to begin deliveries for retail customers in the second quarter of 2015. Having driven an early concept version of the car, the things that instantly impressed me were the pure acceleration possible in a Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV), its technology interface and the overall

luxury. Tesla expects the performance Model X to be able to go from 0-60 mph in about 4.4 seconds, outperforming many sports cars and the fastest CUVs as well. The Model X offers room for seven adults in three rows of seats and their luggage. The Model X has two trunks, the standard rear hatch and an additional ‘frunk’ (front trunk) under the front hood. Prices for the Model X have not been announced, but Tesla is taking reservations, which require a $5,000 deposit.

TESLA MODEL S PERFORMANCE

Tesla has come a long way since the days of using a modified Lotus chassis. While I must confess to being one of the people who sometimes looked the other way when discussing the technology they were developing, by the time I turned back around they had created something very special. More fool me. The back story of Elon Musk and his vision is now cemented into automotive history books, but the physical manifestation of that dream is a real driver car that happens to tick so many futurist buttons. The Tesla Model S is large, in a good way, in that you can get fully-grown people in it. It is luxurious and very well made and has the largest, cool, ‘iPad’ quality centrally-mounted interface I have ever seen.

But it is the manipulation of the new laws of electric car physics that will thrill you as the driver. Because the huge flat battery is bolted to the bottom of the car it not only increases structural rigidity but also creates an astonishingly low center of gravity—the Holy Grail for sportscar designers. Driving fast in a Tesla Model S was a little bizarre at first for an old fashioned, fossil-fuel-burning racer like me, but it grew on me. In the relative silence I noticed other noises around me. In fact, you become much more aware of other fast moving traffic as you can hear their every move. I am now a fan. A believer. And I won’t dare turn a blind eye to this technology again, as I can’t imagine what levels of innovation Tesla will achieve in another five years.

ZENVO ST-1 The Zenvo ST-1 is a unique, limited edition Danish high performance super car. Its turbocharged and supercharged 6.8-liter V-8 engine generates more than 1,104 horsepower, which powers the car to a top speed of 233 mph. Zenvo claims the ST-1 is entirely a result of Danish design. I loved the carbon fiber body and the aerodynamic package on it. The first useful options I noticed were the keyless entry, the satellite navigation, the telescopic steering wheel adjustment and the electrically adjustable leather racing seats. My favorite part of the car’s performance was the

acceleration, it was absolutely phenomenal, but a reminder of the respect it takes to handle that much power. The driving position is great, and as you hit the track, the first thing that grabs you is the invigorating sound of the exhaust. It is beautifully tuned, reminding you of the huge amount of power you have at your disposal. The car has a list price of $1,800,000 as of press time. I thoroughly enjoyed my test drive in such a great looking supercar.
