dR PUBLISHER’S LETTER Dear Reader, Our prime feature this month is dR GETTING AROUND THE BAY. For all of you newcomers to the area, this is an issue you will want to keep for reference. This feature covers everything from restaurants and resorts to shopping and entertainment of different varieties. The luxury resort section provides contact information and websites for sixteen properties in the area that you will want to consider for a staycation or weekend visit. In fact, FOR THE ROAD TRIPPERS and FOR THE EXPLORERS both include several pages with suggested road trips and recreational areas you may not have already considered for your Florida vacation. There is even FOR THE FIT CROWD if you are looking for more challenging activities. THE BEAUTY OF BEACHES is a great reference for the best beaches in our area. The shopping review includes jewelry, accessories, artwork, clothing and much more. The cultural section will impress even those who have been in the area for years. Then, FOR THE SPLURGERS will actually make your mouth water, as you read about the local eateries serving up these amazing sweets. Staying with the vacation theme, dR TRAVEL educates us on SARASOTA, A Love Story. You will enjoy the hot tips on everything from summer specials at area resorts to local entertainment and dining spots. This article will entice you to make Sarasota a weekend or overnight getaway this summer for sure. dR REAL ESTATE features a Tierra Verde estate with a lifestyle of waterfront opulence in a home built in 2005 with over 7,000square-foot of living space, overlooking the Sunshine Skyway bridge. If you aren’t in the market for a new home, but want to improve your current property, our dR GARDEN editorial will enlighten you on creating a useful back-yard space. Do you know the difference between a gazebo, pergola, arbor, cabana and pavilion? dR DISH offers solutions for a summer picnic with menu items and catering recommendations. And, our editorial on Chef Robert Masson on page 74 provides his mouthwatering recipe for Szechwan Duck Marinade. If are you going to a local charity event please email us photos, names and email addresses, and we will recognize you and your event in dR PARTY. I hope you will take the time to peruse the pages of this month’s issue of the duPont REGISTRYTM. Enjoy!

Eating Healthy
Cecilia and Don Hall place a high priority on serving only the freshest ingredients and they make everything to order at their small café, Seasons Fresh, near the University of South Florida. Even the soups, sauces and salad dressings are created onsite. The restaurant is open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday and for breakfast on Saturday morning. The two also do extensive catering for organizations in the area and offer a seasonal Saturday morning market in the fall and spring. Try their Skyway Cobb salad, fresh fruit smoothies and top-quality Illy coffee from Italy. Many items are Halal-certified for Muslim customers who live in the area or work nearby at USF and Moffitt Cancer Center. 2816 East Bearrs Avenue, Tampa; 813-866-4444. www.seasonsfreshcafe.com
New Yoga Center in South Tampa
White Orchid Yoga’s healing and meditative environment will soon be found in South Tampa when a satellite center opens in September. “Our dream is to share Ashtanga yoga with the community everywhere,” says Jessica Lynne, the Clearwater studio manager who is also a yoga teacher. Ashtanga yoga is a practice that emphasizes “breathwork” and a series of postures linked together through flowing movement. “With yoga, the greatest healing comes from within yourself,” says Lynne. “There are many benefits, including a clearer mind and more strength and patience to face daily struggles.” The studio offers private and group classes in yoga, meditation and chanting, and a boutique with gift items. 907 South Fort Harrison, Clearwater; 727-474-3771 and 2120 S. MacDill Avenue, Tampa; 813-443-4578. www.whiteorchidyoga.com
The Gift Box
Yoga in Ybor
The Gift Box is a welcome addition to downtown St. Petersburg’s Beach Drive, a perfect place to find that unique item for someone special or a special occasion. The shop offers a range of artisan styles and prices with inventory that changes frequently. “We want to be known as the destination for giftware you won’t find anywhere else,” say co-owners Judy Bailey and Linda Albrecht. For example, the two are the only ones in the area licensed to carry the colorful contemporary style of the Brazilian artist Ramero Britto. You’ll also find unusual jewelry, home décor, wedding and baby gifts. 400 Beach Drive NE, Suite 169, St. Petersburg; 727-209-8300. www.thegiftboxofstpete.com
“Yoga changes your life,” says Ashley Thesier, owner of Yoga Loft in Ybor City. Before coming to the area, Thesier was an intern with the United Nations in New York City and worked with diplomats from around the world. She came to Ybor for Guavaween and decided to move here and open a yoga studio. “Yoga is about connecting body, mind and spirit,” says Thesier. “As Americans, we are taught that everything comes from pushing, but yoga just allows everything to unfold. It also offers a nice work out, helps with concentration, and teaches you how to breathe— you’d be surprised at how much you can actually inhale.” 2002 East 5th Avenue, Tampa; 813-248-9642. www.yogalofttampa.com/index-1.html dR

It’s pretty hard to talk Greek food without talking Greek salad. Though the market cafe serves excellent leg of lamb and moussaka, it’s the salad that we yearn for. Fresh shredded lettuce over a tangy potato salad (originated in nearby Tarpon Springs with the ‘Grandpa’ Louis Pappas) topped with ripe tomato slices, cucumber, scallions, green pepper, pepperoncini, kalamata olives, beet slices and feta cheese served with their homemade dressing. Multiple locations in Clearwater and Tampa. www.louispappas.com
Butchers and chefs love the Hangar steak, so much so that they tend to keep it to themselves. So when you do find it—like at The Hangar & Flight Lounge—order it, and keep your fingers crossed that the chef knows what he (or she) is doing. In this case... he does. Also worth a layover: the chicken and waffles. 540 1st Street SE, St Petersburg; 727-823-7767. www.thehangarstpete.com

PORTERHOUSE FOR TWO at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.
FRITTO MISTO at Bella Brava.

HOUSEMADE SAUSAGE at Datz. Social-media buzz aside... what’s relevant here is that Datz is finding it’s gastropub groove. Sure, they have the same great sandwiches, and the red velvet pancakes are to-die-for, but behind all that is a talented kitchen grinding, seasoning, stuffing and smoking their way to charcuterie perfection. 2616 S. MacDill Ave., Tampa; 813-831-7000. www.datzdeli.com
BEEF ON WECK at O’Maddy’s.
PANANG CURRY at Jasmine Thai, Westshore.
Sure, the banana-crusted ahi tuna and baconwrapped escolar with tomato jam caught attention, but it’s the ‘weck that gets the nod. The thinly-sliced London roast beef on a Kemmelweck roll with butter, rock salt, horseradish and au jus is a taste of home. 5405 Shore Boulevard South, Gulfport; 727-323-8643. www.omaddys.com
There’s something about the lush comforting richness of coconut milk that makes everything seem right with the world on any given day. CONCHINITA PIBIL at Taco Bus. As close to super casual, no frill, street food that the Bay Area gets. Everything is excellent, but try the Conchinita Pibil. Based on a 5,000 year old Mayan recipe, the pork marinates in achiote and bitter orange before being wrapped in banana leaves and slowly smoked. 913 E. A hip, glamorous, a la carte steak house with prime meats and fresh fish cooked at 1,200 degrees and served simply—a repeated recipe around the Bay. But what makes this self-proclaimed supper club sing is the stunning version of the classic sides. Potato gratin gets an rousing jalapeno smolder; spinach is lush with cream and smoky bacon; macaroni and cheese is kissed by heady black truffle. 2205 North Westshore Blvd., Tampa; 813-490-5288. www.oceanprimetampa.com

BRICK PRESSED DUCK at Sunday’s Fine Dining. Basically, brick-pressing flattens a whole duck so that it cooks evenly, resulting in sumptuous meat seasoned by the fat rendered from the now-crisp skin. Also worth mentioning: the Knuckle Sandwich—a clever name for a tasty sandwich, Sunday’s version of a Lobster Roll. 1919 E. Seventh Avenue, Tampa; 813-248-4000. www.sundaysfinedining.com
ORGANIC BEEF at Grille 116. Dark and dreamy, and we’re not just talking the decor. Afficionados appreciate the special touch organic, grass-fed beef requires in the kitchen and Grille 116 delivers. The Signature Filet Bites with garlic toast points and creamy horseradish are excellent, as is the Center Cut Filet. But oh! Don’t miss the pretzel bread. 15405 North Dale Mabry, Tampa; 813-265-0116. www.grilleonesixteen.com
Eclectic, sophisticated and imaginative... 717 is quintessential SoHo. The menu blends Italian and Pacific Rim cuisine, but this is not fusion food—the two rarely overlap in a single dish. You’ll be tempted by the Escargot baked in a creamy herb butter with proscuitto, roma tomato, goat cheese and basil, but save room for the Veal Scaloppine. However the chef chooses to prepare it, it will be divine. 717 South Howard, Tampa; 813-250-1661. www.717south.com

Legend has it that when guests are invited to a party in Mexico, it is not uncommon for them to ask, “Is there mole?” If the answer is no, well, there’s no party. WAGYU BEEF CARPACCIO at Capital Grille. Vanilla Rum Glazed Grouper at Sea Sea Riders
The little blue house on Main Street Dunedin oozes with small-town charm, but don’t let that deceive you—behind the aww-shucks, blue jean and t-shirt vibe is a world-class kitchen. I had vanilla rum glazed grouper in St. Bart’s. ROPE VIEJA at La Teresita. Loosely translated from Spanish to mean "old clothes," rope vieja is a favorite, served on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The meat is so thoroughly cooked in spices and tomatoes, it falls apart in succulent shreds. Steaming black beans and rice come on the side along with hot, crusty Cuban bread. Finish with a cup of cafe con leche. It just may be the best in town. 3248 W Columbus Drive, Tampa; 813-875-2007. www.lateresitarestaurant.com
BONE MARROW at Donatello's. Ok. So that’s a little bit of a fib. It’s not really bone marrow, per se. More like a happy accident. SUNSHINE SKYWAY BRIDGE. Completed in 1897, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is as long as Mount Everest is high, stretching for 4 miles. It's the fifth-largest cable-stayed bridge in the world and features sunny yellow steel cables. Incorporated into the structure are 36 “dolphins,” which were put in place to protect the support columns of the bridge from impacts from boats. In fact, the bridge can withstand a big impact by a boat weighing in at 87,000 tons. That's twice the size of the Titanic. Take a drive, stop at the Skyway Fishing Pier or simply have a picnic at Ft. DeSoto with the bridge as a backdrop. Photo courtesy of Florida Tourism | Travel Information & Photos

Seabird Sanctuary. Dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured birds, this prominent avian hospital sees thousands of "patients" annually. Various wild creatures, from song birds to raptors, are treated, most of which are released--yet hundreds of permanently injured birds live in this beachfront sanctuary. Volunteers and professionals provide manpower for the facility, which has gained recognition for breeding Eastern brown pelicans in captivity. As many as 500 patients can occupy the hospital at a time. Birds you may encounter include herons, egrets, cormorants, seagulls, and the like. 18328 Gulf Boulevard, Indian Shores, 727-391-6211.

Sarasota has my heart. I fell in love with this idyllic vacation spot less than an hour south of St. Petersburg over 20 years ago and try to visit as often as possible. Water as blue as the Caribbean. Idyllic beaches. No passport required. How exciting to hear from my friend Erin that Siesta Beach was named the Number One ranked beach in America this year according to “Dr. Beach”—the Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University. We love exploring Sarasota from glamorous Bird Key to historic Lido Shores. Where to stay? We highly recommend a private island getaway that golfers, tennis fans, spa aficionados and beach lovers adore known as the Longboat Key Club & Resort. shade structure that wrapped around three sides of a pool, and for another he enclosed a spa with a pergola that features a built-in misting system. It’s all about style, vision and purpose. Gazebos and pavilions are larger structures that serve as outdoor rooms with a cover and flooring. “They provide protection from the elements, give people more usable living space outside and they can add to the value of the home,” says Daniel Conover, of The Carpentry Hut in Sarasota, which specializes in fine exterior woodworking and design. Gazebos are typically six-sided or eight-sided, while pavilions are more rectangular or square and are very functional when you’re trying to make best use of the space. Cabanas often have an elevated floor a few feet higher than the pool or sun deck and can be covered with everything from canvas fabric to match the Bimini top on the boat or with a metal or shingle roof to match the house, says Conover. Free-flowing sheer curtains can be added for privacy in the style of South Beach resorts. So when it’s too hot to cook, or a beautiful, tropical evening beckons, grab a picnic and retreat to your favorite outdoor space right in your own backyard. dR

iving in Florida offers the perfect opportunity to make our backyards into something more than a big expanse of green grass. Why not create an attractive outdoor living space that invites you to get out and relax for a while? After a tough day at the office, having a private secluded retreat in the backyard for unwinding while you sip a glass of wine and watch the sunset can be heavenly. And what could be better than early evening al fresco dining by the pool or in the garden. Order a catered picnic from your favorite restaurant. The type of outdoor space that’s right for you will depend on what you want to accomplish, says David Hetrick, of Exterior Concepts in Tampa, a company specializing in custom outdoor living spaces. Do you need shade from the sun or protection from the rain? How are you going to use the space? Will you be installing lighting or overhead fans? Is your style simple or more sophisticated? Gazebos, pergolas, pavilions, cabanas and arbors are some of the choices to consider as you dress up your backyard to better suit your lifestyle. Each of these structures offers something different, but their primary goal is to serve as an important architectural design element that draws you outside into the fresh air. More aesthetic than functional, an arbor placed over a mulch or paver sidewalk can serve as an attractive entryway to your outdoor space or it can stand alone as visually attractive focal point, especially if covered with a flowering vine. Pergolas have an open-frame structure with slats, latticework or a commercial-grade shade cloth cover and can serve as a walkway to the garden or as a sitting area. They let in filtered light but offer no protection from the rain. For one homeowner, Hetrick designed a pergola

Picnic Panache By Heather Anne Stalker
Whatever form it takes, the picnic is a summer ritual none of us should pass up. Three great ways to pack your basket and head outdoors to take advantage of the long, sultry days of summer.
Midsummer’s Night Dream In Jane Austen novels, summer appears to be an endless series of afternoons spent picnicking in the countryside, where ladies and gentlemen, dressed in their best linens, arrive by carriage while servants trail behind carrying cases loaded with china, silverware, crystal goblets, tablecloths and umbrellas. This daylong ritual entails a brief walk followed by a sumptuous picnic and lively, flirtatious conversation. These days, it's difficult to hire a horse and carriage, and almost impossible to find servants willing to carry a trunk loaded with your best china, but no matter. As simple as it sounds, a night on a blanket under the stars adds a measure of romance and excitement that’s often absent from Austen’s musings. Besides, it’s a great way to beat the heat during the Bay Area summer. You’d be hard-pressed to come up with a better location than Fort DeSoto Park (3500 Pinellas Bayway S., Tierra Verde), where the added element of cool sand and moonlight makes it an ideal spot for romance. Of course, make sure to bring small citronella torches or candles to illuminate your meal and keep the bugs away. For a sumptuous a la carte menu, look no further than the charming and effervescent Datz (2616 S.MacDill, Tampa), where the staff practically swoons at the opportunity to play cupid. You are, of course, welcome to wander the gourmet market choosing items on your own, but 60 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay
for the ultimate escape, arrange to leave your basket overnight and they’ll fill it with a light meal that's the perfect prelude to a midsummer romance. PICNIC MENU Nibbles: Cheese + Charcuterie with Louis Latour Pouligny Montrachet Entree: Somer in the Tropics Salad Sweet Nothings: William Dean Chocolate Truffles or S’Mores (ask to borrow one of Datz’s culinary jets!)
Recipe: SOMER IN THE TROPICS Sweet and savory collide in this dish that works as appetizer, hors d'oeuvre or main dish (shown below). 1 pound fresh gulf shrimp, peeled and deveined 2 large peaches or nectarines, pitted and cut into thick wedges 2 ripe but firm mangoes, pitted and cut into thick wedges 1 pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices
1 cup crumbled goat cheese Mixed Salad Greens Mango-Poppyseed Vinaigrette Extra Virgin Olive Oil Salt and Pepper to taste Preheat grill to 350- to 400-degree (medium-high) heat. Toss the shrimp with olive oil, salt and pepper, then grill, covered, 2-3 minutes on each side or just until shrimp turn pink. Brush each of the fruit wedges with olive oil, and then grill for 2-3 minutes on each side or until grill marks appear. Toss salad greens with Mango-Poppyseed vinaigrette; season with salt and pepper to taste, and top with grilled shrimp, peaches and goat cheese. Serve immediately. Note: For your picnic, grill everything ahead of time and then chill. This way the fruit and shrimp could be eaten by hand, and the mixed greens could be left for another time. Greek yogurt would make a nice addition, especially as a dipping sauce.
Urban Appeal The blazing concrete jungle may seem to lack foliage, but not in the Bay Area where entire city blocks are devoted to expansive patches of grass shaded by live oaks and the skyscraper up the street. So grab a wicker basket, pack up some panini and trek to a leafy city oasis. St. Petersburg’s Waterfront Parks are practically legendary, spanning 23 blocks of downtown. No matter which of the 11 parks you choose, there are plenty of benches and picnic tables for a quiet lunch in the shade, and wide open spaces for kite-flying. Should you tire of the salt air (or summer heat),you can meander indoors to the newly reinvented Salvador Dali Museum, located adjacent to Alfred Whitted Park. Likewise, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is Tampa’s crown jewel. Overlooking the Hillsborough River, the park with its sloping great lawn features two interactive fountains, a children’s playground, public boat docks, a dog park and a pavilion. All of which just begs for a few leisurely hours spent picnicking, before retiring indoors to catch a show at the Straz or see the latest installation at The Tampa Museum of Art. www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

But first, when you're short on time, your best option is always to have someone else do the cooking for you. Be smart and head to Mazzaro’s Italian Market (22nd Avenue N., St. Petersburg) where the smell of roasted coffee and freshly baked bread greets you at the door. We’re talking the crusty artisan breads you crave (Semolina, Tuscan, Ciabatta, Pugliese, Focaccia, Rosemary and more!), right there next to the homemade cannoli and homemade gelato. Order a gelato to snack on while you wander over to review the deli case, filled with 75 dishes created every single day. It’s a slice of Italian foodie heaven, and it’s the absolute perfect picnic food—if, you can manage to tear yourself away. PICNIC MENU Nibbles: Proscuitto di Parma, housemade mozzarella and olives from the olive bar Salad: Fennel & Orange or Italian Orzo
Entree: Muffuletta Sandwich Sweet Nothings: Cannoli Recipe: MUFFALETTA SANDWICH Sure, you could just have Mazzaro’s make their version and take it to go, but since they have all the ingredients there, here’s your chance to make a masterpiece at home. (Plus, the olive salad makes a great bruschetta appetizer with fresh mozzarella!) Olive Salad: 1 cup each pitted green and black olives, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon tiny capers 1/3 cup roasted red bell pepper, diced (1/4 inch) 1/4 cup celery, with leaves, diced (1/4 inch) 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 teaspoons finely minced garlic 2 tablespoons red-wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper, to taste
Prepare the Olive Salad ahead of time: Combine all the ingredients and set aside in the refrigerator for 4 hours or longer. Sandwich: 1 round peasant bread (about 7 inches in diameter, 5 inches high), halved cross wise, insides pulled out* 4 ounces each thinly sliced Genoa salami and mortadella 4 ounces thinly sliced provolone cheese Assemble the sandwich: Spread half of the Olive Salad on the bottom half of the bread. Layer with salami, provolone and mortadella, then top with the remaining Olive Salad. Cover with the top of the bread, press down and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes. Wrap the sandwich in plastic wrap and let stand for 1 hour. Unwrap, cut into 6 wedges using a ser-
rated knife, then wrap them for the road. *Note: Be sure to hollow out the bread so the salad can fit inside. Doing so also cuts carbs and calories.
Waterfront BBQ Turtles sun on fallen logs that litter the river. Alligators siesta in the rushes. The only sounds are the chattering of birds, the occasional splash as a fish leaps and the soothing swish of paddles. If getting back to nature is your idea of an afternoon picnic, look no further than beyond the point of a canoe (or kayak). There are a plethora of paddling opportunities in the Bay Area, but to truly cool off and savor a slice of old Florida, the Hillsborough River (via Canoe Escape) is the way to go. Under its canopy of large oaks, maple and cypress, the Hillsborough twists and turns through thousands of acres of preserved wilderness. Hard to believe this is the same body of water that cuts through downtown Tampa a mere 12 miles away. Of course, your excursion requires sustenance, and there’s no better protein to pack in your picnic than barbecue, specifically the kind that comes from Hungry Harry’s Famous Barbecue (Seffner and Land o’ Lakes). Smoky, succulent and substantial, your most worrisome decision will be choosing between chicken, pork or beef. Hint: ordering a family pack not only eliminates that problem, but saves 10-15% and increases the probability of leftovers for tomorrow’s workday lunch! Just be sure to ask that your food gets packed in spill-proof pint containers for the cooler. MENU Prelude: Watermelon-Basil Agua Fresca Nibbles: Sweet Cornbread Muffin, Cole Slaw and Collard Greens Entree: 1/2 Slab of Ribs, Whole Chicken Cut and Chopped Pork Sweet Nothings: Watermelon! Recipe: WATERMELON-BASIL AGUA FRESCA Good barbecue takes time. There are no shortcuts, so rather than try to recreate
Harry’s at home, focus instead on packing the perfect summer sipper: Watermelon Agua Fresca. In its purest form, agua fresca is simply blended fruit, water and a little lime—the essence of summer fruit, sipped through a straw. Adding an herbinfused simple syrup (and maybe a splash of vodka) opens a world of inventive flavor possibilities. 2 pounds seedless watermelon, chopped 2 cups cold water 2 teaspoons lime juice 2 tablespoons basil-infused simple syrup or agave nectar
For the simple syrup: Mix 1/4 cup water with 1/4 cup sugar. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, and without stirring, allow the sugar to dissolve (about 3 minutes). Remove from heat, add 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil. Let steep for 15 minutes until flavor has infused the syrup. Blend all ingredients, adjusting sweetness as needed. Strain through a mesh strainer or cheesecloth (optional) and chill. Serve over ice. dR

SALT ROCK GRILL
Salt Rock Grill
The Salt Rock Grill is about the burning passion for delectable food, enticing dining and pleasurable surroundings...The first Indians and early settlers that arrived here were driven by similar appetite. Mostly fishermen, they camped along shores lined with huge salt rock boulders. While the sun melted into the gulf, big crackling fires were built in open pits made of piled salt rock. All gathered around for a grilled feast that lasted well into the evening. This old beach tradition is legendary and it’s still on fire at the SaltRock Grill—plus, no mosquitoes! 19325 Gulf Boulevard, Indian Shores. 727-593-7625 or www.saltrockgrill.com

he follows in his life as well: Keep it fresh; keep it simple. “There is more to being a chef than just cooking,” Masson explains. “I learned very early on that by keeping dishes simple and fresh, my staff could recreate the dishes consistently night after night.” And people have noticed. Masson earned the title of Best Chef in Tampa Bay
twice, but you won’t find him gushing about it. “The accolades are nice, but I’m not in to all of that,” Masson says. hen Robert Masson became a dishwasher at a Gainesville, Florida restaurant while attending the University of Florida in 1981, he had no idea that he would be running the entire kitchen in just eight short months. In fact, Masson hadn’t stepped foot in a kitchen before this position, but something just clicked. “People would say, ‘Hey, kid. You’re a natural,’ and I enjoyed that,” explains Masson, now the executive chef at 717 South in South Tampa. As Masson moved up the ranks in the food industry, he made a name for himself, serving as an executive chef at private clubs, running his father’s catering business and even opening a few restaurants of his own along the way, all without formal training. But nine years ago, 717 South reached out to him for an executive chef position, and Masson has been cooking up delicious dishes for the restaurant’s devoted following ever since. “I have a pretty great job,” Masson says. “And we have a strong, regular clientele.” Masson has a simple motto, one

Szechwan Duck Marinade 1/2 cup ginger, peeled, roughly chopped 1/4 cup garlic cloves 2 jalapenos, seeded 1/2 cup cilantro 4 tablespoons sriracha 1 cup soy sauce 1 cup water Blend all ingredients in food processor or blender. This is a strong marinade, so it only takes about one ounce or less per
duck breast or whatever it is that you are marinating. This recipe works great on chicken breast, but use chicken breast with skin on for best results. If you’re using duck breast, it is very important to start skin-side down to cook as much fat out as possible. The more fat cooked out, the crispier the skin. Scoring the skin (making small cuts in the skin) also helps in this process. Use what you need of the marinade, and retain the rest for future use. 717 South serves its duck grilled with a sriracha aioli and straight sriracha if you want a real kick. dR Hope you enjoy!!

them as he updates the menu. If an avid patron has a favorite dish on the menu, you won’t find Masson taking it off. And there are a lot of fan favorites on the 40-plus item menu. The Romanocrusted sea bass flies right out of the kitchen, and the grilled quick-smoked salmon is another showstopper. But if Masson was preparing his perfect meal, he would start with the grilled vegetable torte followed by the Szechwan duck breast and the chocolate lava cake for dessert. “I would describe the menu as on the verge of being eclectic with Asian and Italian undertones,” Masson says. The restaurant is open for lunch Monday through Friday and for dinner Monday

Delivering stirring and show-stopping performances, Celtic Thunder returns to their distinct Irish roots with this inspired collection of songs, including the sweet and tranquil Kindred Spirits, the rousing jig, A Place In the Choir, the seductive Black Is the Color and the upbeat Whiskey In the Jar, to name a few. duPont Publishing has made every effort to ensure the accuracy of all program schedules. 2012 Fiat 500C F

iat is celebrating its return to North America with the 500 (preferred pronunciation is “Cinquecento”), a small city car that will compete directly with the Smart Fortwo and the Aston Martin Cygnet. The car pays homage to the original 500, which was mass produced from 1957 to 1975. Fiat revived the car in 2007 to near worldwide success. The “C” in the 2012 Fiat 500C stands for Cabrio. Its retractable dual-layer cloth top resides between two parallel beams that connect the A-, B-, and C-pillars. As the roof overhead retracts, it automatically forms nice stacks that can end in one of two positions: at the top of the rear window or all the way down to the top of the trunk lid. It is an innovative approach to creating an open-top car without sacrificing the structural strength and safety of such a small auto. The car’s small size and eccentric styling attracted gawkers everywhere it went and once they could see inside, their

eyes glued onto the ivory and bright red interior of our test car. It is an airy and quiet cabin with simple layout and well-organized controls. Compared to the Smart car, it is also better appointed, with quality leather lining the seats and steering wheel. The backseats can hold two adults; however, legroom is at a premium and the rear headrests protrude into the backs of everyone above a medium stature. The backseats do fold flat to provide extra space outside the small trunk cavity. The small 101-hp four-cylinder engine has its work cut out for it but returns 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway with the automatic transmission. One thing we did not like was the steering, which required multiple rotations for U-turns and felt
overboosted and twitchy. However, its eagerness to turn does make it feel willing to enter corners and its low stance and decently sized tires help it hug corners. Mr. duPont, publisher of the duPont REGISTRY, gave his approval. That may have as much to do with its historical impact as its quirky styling, unconventional folding top, and the quality of its build and materials. The Fiat 500 stands out compared to Smart and Aston Martin’s city cars but asking Americans to limit themselves to such small automobiles is no easy task, especially when other competitors, like the Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris, offer similar performance with more space for the same money. dR
