ot a man to make snap decisions, Chris Wheeler says he nevertheless knew immediately that the new community of Belleview Place was right for him. Wheeler said he never considered or looked at another community, “I’d been thinking about moving to Clearwater for years. So when I saw who the builder was and where it was, I said the time has come. I ran all my options and it just fit like a glove. And I haven’t looked back. I’m very confident it’s a worthwhile decision.” Still, the decision was far from hasty. The affable former broadcaster and current ambassador for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball club has been traveling to Clearwater with the team every year since 1972. Over time the spring training camp Chris Wheeler, avid golfer has become a and club ambassador for second home. the Philadelphia Phillies “When baseball team. you’ve gone to a place for 46 years, there’re no mysteries,” he said, explaining how his familiarity with the area cemented his decision. “I love the area. He said when he heard it was going to be developed by JMC Communities, “I thought, ‘OK, that’s good. I know JMC. When they build something they’re going to build it, and build it right.’” JMC has created 24 award-winning communities and hotels, including Sandpearl Resort & Residences on Clearwater Beach, Ovation in downtown St. Petersburg and the Bellamy in Tampa. From The Publisher January/February 2017
Hello, Tampa Bay,
CLOSETS
HOME OFFICES
MEDIA CENTERS
Welcome to our first issue of 2017! It is our annual real estate issue with a very interesting article on some of the most lavish homes in the Bay Area. Mansions ranging from $5 million to $15.9 million are just some of the fabulous residences that are available, at press time, right here in our neighborhoods. Speaking of neighborhoods, a whole new community is springing to life on the site of the old Belleview Biltmore Hotel property. This issue’s cover is a rendering of building #1 of four mid-rise condominiums that will be spaced around the remainder of the original Belleview Biltmore Hotel. JMC developers have preserved the original pre-1900 structure and moved the historic, stylish Belleview Inn. It will open in about 18 months. Over 100 condominiums in four seven-story buildings will populate the 19.7 acre site along with 37 carriage homes. It is truly a “new neighborhood of historic proportions”. Elsewhere, we continue to refine our editorial focus on interesting, useful and luxurious facets of the Tampa Bay lifestyle. We are always on the lookout for the myriad of social, philanthropic, charity events. If you are a leader, underwriter, or just a participant at any of these wonderful galas and get-together’s, please call Amanda in our office (727-897-8454) and find out how to get pictures of your party in our dR PARTY section. Importantly, I am particularly delighted to feature Ron and Tami Broadrick in our dR BACK PAGE feature. This fantastic couple has set their sights on helping others in very meaningful ways by using their time, their home, and their financial resources to advance causes that help young people in need of residential care, temporary assistance, and training in hopes of getting them back on their feet. Ron and Tami are hosting an event in April (April 8, 2017) at their glorious home in Lutz that has become the best charity event that you have never heard of. The evening will include a gourmet farm-to-table dinner accompanied by an exclusive collection of wine. Ron’s extraordinary art collection will be on full display and their home will be open to the evenings’ guests. Tickets are available in advance ($1,000/per person). Space is limited to just 100 people. I promise you that the evening is well worth the cost and that the charities will benefit in many ways. Join Ron, Tami and the duPont REGISTRYTM for an unforgettable evening and a very few select and unusual auction items. Enjoy!

A Revolutionary Approach To Joint Replacement Surgery

L
iving a life filled with chronic joint pain is frustrating and debilitating, both mentally and physically. This diminished capacity to enjoy an active lifestyle leaves patients with a life-altering decision to undergo extensive replacement surgery. But now patients have access to therapeutic alternatives that can improve their quality of life. Advanced Regenerative Orthopedics in Tampa is one of the leading medical centers in the country revolutionizing how doctors and patients treat chronic knee and joint pain. By offering a minimally invasive alternative to joint replacement, the team of multi-specialty doctors bring a global approach to advanced patient care that provides a practical alternative to traditional open joint surgery, without enduring a painful recovery. After years of research studying the benefits of a combined approach to patient wellness, Advanced Regenerative Orthopedics has devised a process that uses minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, stem cell regenerative medicine and denervation. “We have created a hybrid fusion of multiple technologies that provide the maximum benefit for patients to improve their mobility while maintaining the body’s natural joints,” says Dr. Robert Dean, internal medicine specialist and founder of Advanced Regenerative Orthopedics. “No other specialist in the country can offer all three options at one time.” The team combines well-known technologies into one comprehensive surgery, instead of three or four different procedures that are often required by insurance. This approach to restorative healing allows patients to return to a healthier lifestyle quickly. Minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery is a safe alternative to open surgery, with less pain and scarring. By inserting a small flexible
16

tube with a camera and light, surgeons can review the extent of the damage and make any repairs with two small incisions. Stem cell regenerative medicine uses natural cells to promote a faster recovery process by creating an environment to support the body’s natural ability to produce natural cells to preserve tissues. Denervation allows doctors to use radiofrequency or laser techniques to deaden nerves that transmit pain. ARO has also found success using this surgery on other joints, including hips and shoulders. Potential patients undergo a whole body wellness review and exam with Dr. Dean and are then referred directly to his surgical partner, Dr. Steven Mirabello. Mirabello, who was the first orthopedic surgeon on the west coast of Florida to perform a cartilage transplant, is also the leading shoulder surgeon in the state. His skills and experience are highly sought by the world’s leading surgeons. Advanced Regenerative Orthopedics also offers patients undergoing surgery a three-day concierge service to support their needs before, during and after surgery. A specialist is assigned to each patient, providing a managed travel schedule that coordinates transportation to/from the airport or hotel to the surgery center for appointments. Day 1 allows patients to meet with their surgeons and physicians to review the treatment plan and ask any remaining questions. Day 2 is dedicated to surgery and post-op, while Day 3 allows patients to meet with their doctors to check incisions and review post-op requirements. ARO has successfully treated patients from around the world and given them a second chance to preserve their natural joints and avoid painful surgery in their lifetime. Call for a no-cost consultation and MRI review today! G

troll down one of the shell-paved side streets in Indian Rocks Beach and you might come across a delightful group of women who look like they’ve stepped back in time. They’re dressed in long skirts, lacy blouses and beautiful straw hats. Often, they carry umbrellas to shade against the sun. But it’s not just their style of clothing that sets them apart. Violetta Chandler, Mary Rose Holmes and Helen Tilston are known as the Plein Aire Cottage Artists of Indian Rocks Beach. Since 1999, the three have forsaken the studio and set up easels in front of whatever captures their fancy and their hearts. They have a passion for painting the outdoor landscape in plein air - a French term and style advocated by master impressionist painters like Renoir and Monet. By now the three are well known around town and cause quite a stir when they’re out. “People stop by and encourage us, or they blow their horn and wave from the car. We’re a novelty with our hats and dress,” jokes Helen. “It’s fun for us and fun for the town.”

Save Our Cottages Over the years they’ve captured on canvas the small town charm of Indian Rocks Beach, one of the few seaside communities that still has a sizeable collection of quaint, historic beach cottages dating back to the 1920s. In fact, the artists have been credited with helping save many of the cottages from being torn down and turned into condos. Blazing red Bougainvillea, the dappled sunlight of a bright Florida day, children playing on the beach, sailboats and the pastel colors of old-style beach cottages are the hallmark of their art, which has the soft, romantic brushstroke of the French impressionists they admire. In 2007 the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation presented them with an award for preserving a chapter of Florida’s past that is quickly disappearing. The three met at an art class. Violetta was the instructor. The three hit it off right away and began painting together in Indian Rocks Beach. One of the first cottages they painted was the
By: Janan Talafer historic Scruggs Harbor cottage, which was on the verge of being demolished – or “smashed” as Mary Rose likes to emphasize. Their paintings caught the attention of locals who not only admired their work, but also began advocating for preserving the town’s history. A few years ago, the artists helped create an annual Plein Aire Artist Preservation Award, which is given to businesses and cottage owners who protect and renovate their properties. The three produce a limited edition “Save Our Cottages” Calendar with proceeds going to the town’s library and historic museum. In addition, they donate a painting every year to the Indian Rocks Beach Action 2000. Giving back to the community is important to them. Mary Rose estimates that they’ve donated over $35,000 to the city. A Passion for Art Rarely a day goes by that the three don’t pick up a paintbrush. “Even if we’re not feeling 100 percent we still want to paint,” says Helen. “We get into the zone,” says Mary Rose. “Three hours could go by and you’re so focused that you’re not hungry or thirsty.” The three are known for their triptychs, a three-panel project where each artist paints a separate panel; then all three are put together for the finished piece. “We do a few rough markups together to make sure the line, angle and perspective are right and then we separate and paint individually,” says Helen. “We have to work fast, the sun and shadows are always changing.” G

Lavish Homes Around The Tampa Bay Area
I
f Tampa Bay’s housing market could make one wish for the new year it might be to see a repeat of the trends and upswings that made last year a “Sweet (two thousand) 16.” Single family homes fetching record-breaking prices and inventory that moved from listings to closings at a fast-clipped pace fueled a frenzy that had been missing from the local residential real estate market. That combination of high prices and high turnover seemed to occur across the board, impacting sales of modest dwellings to multimillion dollar mansions, enabling high-priced homes to benefit from a “here-today-gone-tomorrow” demand. With Florida’s population continuing to climb, international investment in local residential properties rising and the lure of living in the Tampa Bay area becoming increasingly attractive, that heightened activity is likely to keep going and growing. A review of Tampa Bay’s current inventory of homes in the fivemillion-dollar-plus range show there is no single feature commonly shared by these mansions. A closer look reveals custom touches to appealing amenities that would put these world-class homes high on anyone’s living space wish list. Whether fronting on private golf courses or the Gulf of Mexico, nestled in historic neighborhoods or along the coasts of idyllic islands or located anywhere from Tarpon Springs to Tierra Verde or from Belleair Beach to South Tampa’s Bayshore Boulevard, the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area clearly caters to a lavish lifestyle suitable to everyone’s personal preference. For a look at local luxury market listings, duPont REGISTRY selected the following sampling of desirable and, as of press time, still available, exceptional homes.

f your home is your castle, why not dress it in style fit for a queen (or king)? Usher in a new year with a sophisticated, svelte look personalized by your passions and optimized for comfort. Here’s how to update your Camelot. What’s hot in 2017 trends for interior and exterior home design? Retro and modern, rustic and romantic, mixed metallics, lucite and black stainless steel are all the rage. So long matchy-matchy décor, hello pops of color and rooms designed for multi-tasking, cuddling and relaxing. It’s a brave new décor from furnishings to al fresco home entertaining. Look to farmhouse style, industrial furnishings, open shelves, painted furniture, sanctuary bedrooms with upholstered headboards, clever luxurious storage, mid-century accents, succulents, conversation-enhancing furniture, cork walls, terracotta, coastal style and vintage looks (art décor, fifties chic) with a modern twist. Say adios to heavy window treatments, pastels, inspirational posters, mirrored furniture, tiled countertops, white marble, copper and all-white rooms. Open living plans are being replaced by defined living areas, each maximized for cocooning. Rooms With A View For nearly 30 years John Cannon Homes (JCH) has been Southwest Florida’s premier designer/builder of luxury custom homes with impeccable attention to detail. Their clients want design-pleasing rooms without digital distractions so they can relax. To accommodate this trend, JCH is building expansive outdoor living spaces with mesmerizing fountains, fire pits and utilizing the new Clearview screens. Along the theme of escapism, there is a demand for cozy nooks and spaces to decompress, such as intimate master sitting areas, upstairs retreats and for outdoor relaxation private gazebos and courtyards. Creating spaces to encourage relaxation, family time or recreation is the trend. “I have always believed that the kitchen is the heart of the home,” said John Cannon, President of John Cannon Homes, who believes that the kitchen design should be as artistic as your upscale cuisine. Cannon adds that it’s important to have open, spacious designs that allow you to move around easily. Large central islands function both as cooking and entertaining, accented by commercial style appliances, wine storage, built-in pantries and innovative storage spaces. Color Pantone says greenery is the 2017 star while Behr predict three distinct palettes with personality: Social butterflies flit to Confident (dusky blues, spicy reds, lime greens) while traditionalists yearn for Composed (earthy greens, taupes). Homebodies delight in Comfortable (light pinks, blues, yellows). “Utilizing a neutral color palette allows our designers to showcase vibrant, colorful art that serves as a focal point in the space,” commented Suzan Decker Ross, ASID (Owner- Decker Ross Interiors). “Our clients enjoy a unique, creative design and appreciate the opportunity to support local artists,” she added.

dR Home Multicultural design is popular in color (jewel tones, exotic prints) and Caribbean/Mexican styles and fabrics. Also trending is their Santa Monica coastal style and a new adult/kids Disney design collection. What else is new? Living rooms are designed for nesting and home entertainment with deep, cozy sectionals for cuddling and huddling. In the dining room, round tables have exploded as eating dinner is all about catching up with casual, contemporary looks for tables including white finishes, rough hewn tops and metallic bases with an earthy feel. Chairs have gone from formal to rattan and wicker with an upholstery seat for pop of cover. In the bedroom, upholstered headboards (tufted, fabric with buttons, leather) are all the rage for a staycation in the boudoir. Kitchens doubles as a second family room.
contemporary, traditional) for those who see their high tech kitchen as the heart of the home for entertaining or family time.
Art & Accessories Art-inspired wallpaper blooms in living room and bedrooms, replacing those tired Zen-motto posters. Galleria Mistro says art should be displayed cleanly and serenely. What’s trending? According to owner Louise Del Basso, “Abstract and transitional art are popular such as work by Ria Ray, a new, brilliant California artist we feature,” says Del aso. “This year, look for art that makes you smile, makes you happy.” Some tips for displaying art well: •Hang displays so they do not obstruct anything around and give them the wall focus. •Art has to be hung in a flowing manner with what surrounds it, not fight with clutter. •Be brave! Move things around and breathe it in for a while before knowing if it will work in your space.
Outdoor Living In Tampa Bay, life outdoors is amplified by living water walls, firepits, dramatic LED lighting, artistic furnishings, firepits, pizza ovens and the ultimate grillmaster tools. Doug Driscoll, Chief Visionary Officer of Just Grilliln’ says outdoor entertaining trends include buying pizza ovens and high quality 304-grade stainless steel American-made grills (Alfresco, Viking, DCS) and taking cooking classes to learn how to use them. Firepits give an elegant 360 degree experience that finishes off a patio or a cabana. For furnishings, comfort, quality and long warranty drive demand with modern florals and cools in vogue and natural earthcolors (HomeART, Kalalou, SPI). Backyard chic doesn’t stop with dining. According to Joe Argentine (Argentine Landscaping), the home entertainment center has moved outside, with phenomenal audio sound and large projection screens for family movie night or sports events. Exterior flourishes (pergolas, privacy / decorative fencing, outdoor kitchens, arbors), sculpture, decorative planters, interior style but durable furnishings, foliage (unique palms, conifers and deciduous trees, bromeliads, sedums, cactus, bamboo, ferns, grasses) and living water and garden walls add whimsy and art to alfresco spaces.
Appliances Owning Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances assures that your food will always be fresh and you’ll have the most precise, professionalgrade instruments to cook with for delicious results every time and a lifetime of moments worth savoring. There’s a curated kitchen collection for every lifestyle and taste, (industrial chic,

Closets & Storage Form and function get a major facelift in 2017, with more decorative options for closets, kitchens, garages, laundry rooms, home offices and pantries according to Wayne Smith at Southern Closets. Known for their durable, elegant custom-made cabinetry, Smith says the trend is high-end full cabinets that are real show places similar to a boutique. “From LED lighting and illuminated hanging rods to automated wardrobe lifts that move clothes from ten feet high to you, modern technology and sleek design inspire what we do to personalize your spaces for maximum efficiency and storage,” says Smith.

Must Haves For The Ultimate Man Cave
t’s said that a man’s home is his castle, which would make his “man cave” his lair where he can enjoy a reprieve from the pressures of daily life, watch sports and other television or movies in peace and generally relax in a space he can call his very own—and decorate accordingly! Man caves also offer an abundance of gifting opportunity, from mixology to technology and gadgetry to interior décor. Here are a few great gift ideas that can ensure he’s suitably and stylishly sequestered.
Rat Pack The Rat Pack epitomized the coolest cats of their time—Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Dean Martin, who ruled the Las Vegas and Hollywood scene during the 1950's and 1960's. Now you can capture the enduring spirit of each of these venerable performers with unique handmade, wood-carved panels. Designed by Christopher Guy, one of the most prestigious names in the designer furniture business renowned for his elegant, luxurious furniture collections and pieces, this distinctive wall art will truly set that man cave apart. Produced to satisfy the lofty requirements of the world’s best interior spaces, from breathtaking residential homes to some of the finest hotels, casinos and resorts worldwide, these panels aptly combine the classic and the contemporary and will add strong visual impact to an interior. www.ChristopherGuy.com | $4,870 each

Home to the March PGA Tour’s annual Valspar Championship, Golf Magazine touted the resort as the "Top 100 You Can Play.” Add to the four legendary golf courses a world-class tennis center, racquetball courts, six heated swimming pools, waterfalls, sand beaches with volleyball, kids activity program, zipline, meandering waterslides and delectable cuisine at the resort’s six restaurants/bars, and you’ve got a family vacation or romantic getaway for two without the commute or pricey airfare.

Mindful meditation and a renewed sense of self starts here. The spa’s mantra and namesake? “Strength, courage, fortitude and perseverance,” a testimony to Bruce Sundlun a WWII war hero who escaped Nazi-occupied Belgium when his plane was shot down, earning the code name “Salamander” as an amphibian who can walk through fire. The joyous staff greets you, ushering you into a lovely room with décor designed for well being. The color palette of light greens and earth tones give each guest the sense of connection and spiritual grounding. The Spa houses 12 serene treatment rooms and outdoor yoga on an elegant terrace with breathtaking views that doubles as a wedding/event venue. Grand Weekend Getaway Boulders Resort & Spa Arizona
“... where cowboys continue to roam ...”

A
mid my considerably hectic work schedule and family life where there’s nary a moment to spare, let alone full weeks (or more) to take extended trips, I’ve become a master of the “micro-vacation”—those long weekend getaways that strike just the right balance of relaxation, adventure and indulgence to suitably satisfy my persistent wanderlust. A recent micro-jaunt took me to Phoenix, Arizona—America’s sixth-largest city where cowboys continue to roam and the red rock-laden topography is peppered with the kind of cactus some only see in cartoons. The city’s enduring Southwestern backdrop is not only an indelible draw for me, but also 16 million other leisure visitors who trek to Greater Phoenix each year for some fun in the Sonoran Desert sun. At the center of this incredible itinerary is the Boulders Resort & Spa, which is located just north of Phoenix in the quaint town of Carefree. The property just completed a multi-million dollar renovation to its Casita accommodations as well as multiple common areas, including its Main Lodge, Discovery Lounge, Latilla Ballroom and multiple of its on-site eateries. For your traveling pleasure, here are some stupendous schedule items: Lunch at Gertrude’s Restaurant housed within Phoenix’s famed Desert Botanical Garden Gertrude’s is known for its seasonally inspired cooking that combines American favorites with classic cooking techniques and flavors from around the globe. Under the direction of Executive Chef Matthew Taylor, Gertrude’s seasonal menus celebrate Arizona’s growers and producers while offering a sophisticated culinary experience in a reserved oasis setting. A “Phoenix Point of Pride,” the Desert Botanical Garden is one of only a few botanical gardens accredited by the American Association of Museums. Desert Botanical Garden offers the world's finest collection of arid land plants from deserts around the world in a unique outdoor setting. Boulders Resort & Spa One of the world's most celebrated hideaways, Boulders Resort & Spa is named for the 12-million-year-old granite boulders that dot the landscape. The newly renovated private Casita accommodations, with their expansive stone-laden bathrooms and a host of creature comforts, also boast private patios and wood-burning fireplaces. It’s the only resort in Scottsdale where guests can burn wood in their rooms.
Dinner at Palo Verde Restaurant. Great pleasure awaits at the newly renovated Palo Verde, the resort’s signature restaurant. Chef Brian Archibald offers a new Contemporary Southwestern Cuisine that respects the integrity of the region and incorporates local Arizona ingredients and freshly foraged produce from the resort’s Organic Garden. Relax and enjoy a sublime dining experience on the outdoor patio with glorious views of the scenic duck pond with grassy knolls where Gambel’s quail and newborn rabbits scamper.

dR Travel “Boulder Trek ” Guided Walk This 50-minute adventure trek includes information about how twelve million years ago a geologic eruption left a series of massive rock formations and also about the fascinating background on the topography, flora, fauna and historical sites with petroglyphs, solstice sightings and more. The Spa at the Boulders This 33,000 sq. ft. facility is a full service spa where guests find restoration, pampering and renewed energy. The facility incorporates the elements of feng shui and a Zen-like ambiance while staying true to the natural environs and Native American influences of the region. Its 24 treatment spaces are complemented by such signature elements as a labyrinth (path to tranquility), an authentic Tipi for guided meditation, private Watsu pool, Vichy treatments, Couples Spa Suites and a 5,600 sq. ft. Organic Garden. The spa offers a 2,000 square-foot fitness center, yoga studio, a Spa Café and sweeping views. “Couples Massage” Spa Service (50/80 minutes) The Spa at The Boulders pampers couples with private spa suites. With 800 sq. ft. and private access, full service amenities include private steam/showers, private patio, vanity area, outdoor shower, outdoor fireplace, internet access, indoor and outdoor massage tables, data port and television and an outdoor Jacuzzi with cascading waterfall. Dinner at the resort’s on-site Spotted Donkey Cantina Resort casual attire. Fresh, lively, and energetic, the resort’s Spotted Donkey Cantina embraces Arizona’s southwestern influences with “cantina-style” dishes and western flavors in a relaxing atmosphere. Great pleasure awaits patrons where “Modern Mexican” creative cuisine is a mix of regional flavors, top-notch artisanal ingredients and locally sourced foods. My personal favorite dish among the many savored, including the Mexican Shrimp Ceviche appetizer (shrimp, cucumbers, avocado, jicama, cilantro & jalapeño, served in a lime aqua chile sauce), was the Chimayo Chile Filete de Puerco. This oven roasted pork tenderloin is cooked to tender perfection and topped with a rich, perfectly reduced bourbon ancho chili sauce. The sliced medallions are served atop green chili bacon, large noodle “mac and cheese.” Enough said. Sadly all good things must come to an end. But, given that Phoenix boasts more than 450 hotels with more than 62,000 guest rooms—including over 40 luxury resorts—your next marvelous micro-vacation awaits. For its part, given how much there is to do and see at The Boulders Resort & Spa and the caliber of its hospitality, repeat visits to this relaxing nature-laden retreat are certainly warranted. With this city’s dependably warm temperatures that make outdoor activities a way of life year-round, any time is a great time to visit "The Valley of the Sun."

hef Christopher Altrip is modest on how his flair for creating global culinary cuisine is changing palettes in Tampa Bay.
Altrip, who is as charismatic as he is passionate about food, is the creative force behind the award-winning restaurant, The Black Pearl. Located inside a 100-year-old building along Main Street in Dunedin, the restaurant is surrounded by an enclave of mom-and-pop shops and eateries. Tucked inside the walls is an intimate dining room – only 38 seats – but it’s the symphony of flavorful dishes coupled with a memorable dining experience that has made The Black Pearl a destination favorite for foodies. Named executive chef almost two years ago, Altrip had made an impression with diners and the culinary community by pushing the boundaries and expectations in the kitchen. His inspiration shines in every dish, as he conceptualizes six new menu specials each week, offering an array of New American and French cuisine, with an expanding global palette featuring Italian, Moroccan and Indian flavors. One of his signature items, Sancocho, a chicken soup made with 74
www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
yucca, corn and root veggies, is a variation on his grandmother’s classic dish and honors his half-Panamanian heritage. It’s that symphony of varying flavors and textures that Altrip has created in each dish that keeps customers coming back. Not one to follow the latest food trends, Altrip strives to create a culinary presentation nightly that appeals to all five senses, using high-end ingredients and locally sourced meats and produce. In fact, he boasts that he’s never repeated any dish in almost two years. “I use what I can when conceptualizing the menu and make what I feel,” he says. “My cooking style has always been evolving, and I pick up details from the people I’ve worked with over the years.” This soft-spoken food connoisseur admits he has always loved to cook, but never really considered it as a career until his mid-20s. He fondly remembers learning to cook alongside his grandmother and experimenting with flavors and foods for friends, never following a recipe. He took a job as a prep cook at a local country club and advanced through
By: Katherine Ferrara the kitchen before perfecting his culinary skills. Altrip enrolled in a six-month intensive program in Vancouver, British Columbia, under the critical eyes of “six Gordon Ramsay’s,” he chuckles. After graduation, Altrip returned to Tampa and was hired at the Zagat-rated Cafe Ponte in Clearwater. In 2006, a friend, who was the executive chef at The Black Pearl at the time, pursued Altrip to join him as a sous chef. Working at both restaurants turned out to be a fortuitous turning point in Altrip’s career, both personally and professionally. When Altrip decided to work at The Black Pearl full-time, Kathy Laroche, the restaurant’s original owner, became one of his most influential mentors. “She was hard on me when I first started,” he recalled. “She made me taste everything we put out, and it’s something that I still do today.” Altrip is modest talking about his success in the kitchen, and gives much of the credit to the servers for their knowledge of the food to manage guests’ expectations. He’s always creating something new and continues to make a profound statement on Tampa’s dining community through annual events such as the chef ’s dinner and Spring Farm to Table event. Recognized as one of the top 10 restaurants in Tampa Bay, and placing tops in the French category by the Tampa Bay Times, Altrip says winning the James Beard Foundation Award would be the ultimate achievement in his culinary career. “In many ways, I have the creative freedom to do what I want. I’m constantly pushing and creating new dishes.”G If You Go: Open for dinner daily: Sunday-Monday, 5-9 p.m.; Tuesday-Thursday, 5-10 p.m.; Friday-Saturday 5-11 p.m. Panamanian Ceviche De Corvina 1 pound of cubed corvina or other mild white fish 1 orange (zest and juice) 3 lemons (all juiced but zest from only one lemon) 1 lime (zest and juice) 5 sprigs of cilantro (chopped) 1 small red bell pepper (diced) 1 small yellow onion (diced) 1 scotch bonnet pepper (diced) (optional) 1 ⁄2 teaspoon sugar Salt and pepper to taste Combine all ingredients in a bowl. hen local restaurateurs Jeff Martin and Bharat Chhabria first went into business together (Martin is the founder of The Brass Tap, of which Chhabria owns several franchises), the pair found themselves often enjoying barbecue while talking shop, which planted the seed for a new business venture: UNION72 Barbecue. “Both Jeff and I are barbecue fans, and as we got to know each other better, we found ourselves more and more in barbecue places,” Chhabria explains. “We saw innovation all around us in the industry but not as much in the barbecue sector. It was very traditional. So, the idea started forming in our mind. Barbecue is great but what if we brought innovation into the barbecue world?” Fast-forward to November 2016, when the duo opened UNION72, a chef-inspired barbecue restaurant employing a modern take on sauces, rubs and pairings for barbecue lovers and connoisseurs alike. While the concept was easy to envision with the pair’s love of all things barbecue, the name was a bit harder. “As we sat around the table, we kept going back to the one thing about the concept we want everyone to understand,” Chhabria says. “We really wanted to say we are not the traditional barbecue. We are revolutionary. We take ideas from all styles of barbecue like Memphis and Texas and blend it into something new. That’s where the word ‘UNION’ came from. ‘72’ stands for ‘1872,’ when the term barbecue was first coined.” With the name set, Martin and Chhabria pushed to marry traditional barbecue techniques with the latest culinary innovations. Their concept came full circle after meeting Geoff Zukosky, UNION72’s Pitmaster, whose cooking technique and vision resonated with their own. “If you look at some of the mega-trends in the industry, people want to eat healthier and consume leaner cuts of meats, and barbecue lends itself to that,” Chhabria says. “We focus on taking good quality meat smoked with good quality rubs and spices, giving our customers a high-quality, great-tasting meal in the end.” Those amazing lean meats build out a traditional as well as an unexpected menu, with classics like Pork and Brisket but also handheld sandwiches and tacos. Guests are also able to choose from house-made sauces like white barbecue, sweet barbecue, smoked tomato barbecue and sticky Asian, among others. One of Chhabria’s favorite menu items is the handheld sandwich called “The Conquistador,” made with Spanish spiced slow-smoked pork, pulled and topped with chimichurri, caramelized onions and a fried egg. “This sandwich is just amazing,” Chhabria boasts. “The egg does a great job … when it breaks, it brings out the flavor of the pork and makes it so moist. My other favorite is our Texas style brisket. We’ve had rave reviews about that. We’ve had people from Texas come in and say they’ve tried brisket everywhere and this is the best. That tells us we are doing something right.” Doing “something right” has a lot to do with the research that went into opening UNION72. “We hit up a lot of places in Florida: chains, the hole-in-the-walls that people swear by, all the hipper concepts,” Chhabria shares. “We did research into the key forward-thinkers in the barbecue industry, even visiting their restaurants. We had a lot of fun with it, probably put on a few pounds, but at the end of the day, most competition is local. It was very important what is in a 10-mile radius than in the
Carolinas. We will worry about it when we get there.” And get there, they plan on it. They are following a very successful model. UNION72 sits adjacent to first Brass Tap to ever open, which is now a successful franchise. “We wanted to open in this location,” Chhabria boasts. “We have familiarity with that market. We know it well. It also was just timing. The business that was in this space was leaving and it was right next door to The Brass Tap, which started out in Wesley Chapel and is now a chain. Let’s try to repeat that story.” Photos courtesy of UNION72 Barbecue

2017 BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition Plug-In-Hybrid Review
78
www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
By: Michael Taylor
I
can remember exactly where I was when I first saw a BMW i8 on the road. It was Silver Metallic with Frozen Blue accents and was silently gliding along Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. That unique looking car fit in so well into its City of Dreams surroundings. Fast-forward two years and our 2017 Protonic Red Edition BMW i8 isn’t any less futuristic looking, judging by the responses we received from everyone who came in contact with it. And the response from onlookers was very positive and surprisingly knowledgeable. Most knew that it was a plug-inhybrid and seemed to like everything that they saw and heard about it as we filled them in on some of the unique features of this car. Base Price and Options The color of our tester is very unique, so much so that there will only be 100 Protonic Red Edition i8’s in the United States and 15 in Canada, plus an additional limited number of units worldwide. It is, after all, an $11,000 premium over the base i8 which starts at $140,700. The Protonic Red Edition, which starts at $151,700, includes a leather engine cover, display key, anthracite roofliner, LED headlights and Protonic Red Edition contents. Our car was also fitted with the optional $6,300 Laserlight headlights and when you add $995 for destination and handling, you end up with a price of $158,995 excluding taxes, tags, registration, dealer fees, etc. One more reason this will remain a very rare car. Reeves BMW Tampa is one of the few dealers in the United States that has been allocated one of these cars. Reeves BMW Tampa is part of Reeves Import Motorcars which is a family owned and operated business and have been around since 1971. Yes, that’s a lot of money, but a mid-engine Ferrari or Lamborghini will set you back a quarter of a million dollars, plus options and taxes. And if you want an exotic hybrid, the Porsche 918 Spyder costs more than $850,000 and a hybrid Ferrari LaFerrari costs more than $1.4 million. There is no question that Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche are much more aggressive, extreme ultra-high performance cars, but for the select few people who can afford these cars, the BMW i8 represents a lot of style, performance and technology with a starting price of $140,700. Would I rather have a BMW M2 Coupe (which starts at $51,700) and a BMW M4 Coupe (which starts at $66,200) and more than $20,000 in my checking account for track days and new tires, absolutely! But the BMW i8 is intended for a much different buyer, quite possibly someone who is moving up from an M car as they climb the corporate ladder and the kids move out and they can focus more on transportation for themselves. Technology and Plug-In-Hybrid Drivetrain The BMW i8 has two motors powering the 4 wheels; a 129-hp electric motor which drives the front axle and a 1.5-litre TwinPower turbocharged inline 3-cylinder gasoline powered 228-hp engine which drives the rear axle. When the batteries are fully charged, the i8 is a front-wheel-drive all electric car. When you push the gear shifter to the left (once in Drive) you engage Sport mode, the rear engine fires up and you have a 357-hp, 420 lb-ft of torque, 4-wheel drive electric and gasoline powered car which can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. dR Auto The car can be charged one of three ways: using a DC Combo Charger which takes about 30 minutes; using the BMW i charging station which takes about 2.5 hours (these can be installed at your home); or if you just have access to a standard wall plug, you can use the portable charger which takes about 8 hours, useful if you are not at home and you want to charge your car overnight. With a full charge you have a range of 15 miles and can drive up to 75 mph. But there is no need for range anxiety with the i8. As long as you have gas in your tank, the 3-cylinder engine is always there to seamlessly transition from electric only, to gas and electric, or gas only and has a range of up to 300 miles. Design and Style One of the show stoppers of this car, which is an integral design component of its overall futuristic look, are the scissor doors. Easy to open and close, it’s the steps in-between that require practice and fine-tuning. You need to look good doing this because you are always being watched by onlookers as this car attracts attention wherever it goes. To get in, you slide your rear-end in first, then bring both feet across the very wide door sill and place them in the footwell. To get out, it’s left leg first, lean on your left arm on the door sill, then right leg, then roll out, kind of. Once you get the hang of it, you can try to look as cool as the car you are driving. And should you ever need it, this is a 2+2 which has room for two small passengers in the rear seats. I drove with three occupants including my two nieces who had (almost) no problem climbing in and out of the front and rear seats. Lots of Snapchatting emanated from both of their seats during our drive. Conceptually the car is divided in two, with the upper part being what BMW refers to as the Life Module, or passenger compartment, which is made of high strength Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). The lower portion of the car is referred to as the Drive Module, which contains all of the running gear and is made of aluminum. The i8 weighs 3,455 lbs. and is built using sustainable materials and green build techniques.
is not available. Living in a large urban area with the desire to tune in to news, traffic reports and sports channels is pretty common. Some AM stations are now available on HD radios, when you switch to the 2nd and 3rd HD channels. Overall Driving Impressions The BMW i8 is a surprisingly normal car to drive. You know you are getting into an exotic car as you walk towards it but once successfully inside, everything about this car is relatively simple, easy and quite intuitive to use. With a little bit of agility, this could easily be used as a daily driver, especially because of its all-wheel-drive capability. If you don’t want to fuss with the car at all, just put it in drive and off you go. The car takes care of determining if you are in electric, gas plus electric or gas only mode if you have run out of battery charge. If you feel like participating in the driving experience, you can move the shifter to the left, engage sport mode and start paddling your way up and down through the 6-speed transmission. And with this car’s surprisingly boisterous sounding gasoline engine, the exhaust note is very rewarding as you generate very sporty sounding upshifts and downshifts. A 15 mile battery range does not sound like a lot. If you have a short commute to work and back and or access to a charging station at work, then you could achieve an electric-only daily commute. But it seems like a lot of technology involved in this car for a relatively limited amount of return on that tech investment. But one thing is for sure, you can feel less guilty about driving an exotic car knowing that in hybrid mode, you aren’t burning fossil fuels or emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. G
Fuel Economy With a fuel economy rating of 28 mpg city/highway and gasoline+electric combined driving of 76 MPGe, this is quite a fuelefficient exotic car. By comparison, the Lamborghini Huracán rating is 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway and the Ferrari 488 rating is 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway. Yes, the Lamborghini and Ferrari are much more extreme and higher performance supercars but the BMW’s exotic looks and performance are not reflected in exotic fuel economy - quite the contrary. Nitpicks My two nitpicks; the driver and passenger windows do not go all the way down. In the fully opened position there is more than an inch of window sticking up. Driving with the windows opened and your elbow out isn’t really an option because your elbow rests on top of the glass, which is not very comfortable. The car door isn’t large enough to conceal the entire window. Other nitpick, no AM radio. FM and satellite radio are available, as is the ability to connect an iPod and other MP3 players but AM

hen Ron Broadrick sold his business, Earth Tech, to a private equity group in 2010, he and his wife Tami wanted to give back to the community. Since the couple met when Ron was president of the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, it was only natural that their philanthropic interests would center on a cause they’re passionate about: giving at-risk children hope for a brighter future. Today, the Broadrick Family Foundation provides vitally needed funding for local nonprofit charities with a mission of serving foster, abused and homeless children. “The need is so great out there,” says Ron, who remains as president and CEO of Earth Tech, one of Central Florida’s premier foundation stabilization companies. While they continue to support organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Ron says he and Tami have begun to focus more on small, grassroots charities that many people have never heard of before. Everyday Blessings provides a safe and stable home to siblings, allowing them to remain together after they have been removed from their home due to abuse. “These are children whose world has been turned upside down,” says Ron. “We are thrilled to be helping them.” Suncoast Voices for Children and Angels Against Abuse also support at-risk children who have been removed from the home, sometimes with only the clothes they are wearing at the time. Both agencies step in to provide basic items like car seats, mattresses, clothes and shoes, and to pay for extracurricular activities that can give kids some semblance of a normal childhood. “These are organizations that have touched our hearts,” says Ron.
“We have been able to give these children a chance for a better future and maybe they won’t be destined to repeat the cycle.” More recently, Ron and Tami have been working with Metropolitan Ministries on a new program teaching computer and digital marketing skills to the organization’s clients. It is modeled after Metropolitan Ministries’ successful Inside the Box Catering service. Since 2010, the Broadricks have been generous benefactors for many of these organizations. But last year they decided to take their Family Foundation to the next level by asking friends to get involved. In April, they hosted “Cheers for Charity,” an exclusive evening of fine food, wine, music and dancing at their home in Lutz. “It was a tremendous evening with 75 guests,” says Ron. “We were thrilled to raise $209,500, all of which is directly donated to the charities we had identified.” Ron and Tami are now planning this year’s Cheers for Charity, which will be held on Saturday, April 8. Once again it will be a spectacular evening of food and entertainment at their home, but with a special surprise. The fundraiser will be the “worldrelease” launch party for “Maxem,” a new wine created by celebrated winemaker Sam Kaplan, whom Ron calls a “rock star.” Kaplan oversees Memento Mori, one of Napa Valley’s most sought after cult wines. You don’t want to miss it. G
