ket has been affected by recent events, some parts more than others, but it hasn’t been as dramatic here as in the rest of the U.S. Few people have to sell here, and even fewer people have to buy. They can ‘wait and see.’ Demand for homes here never goes away; it just becomes less of a priority. But when the market starts to swing back the other way, people will jump back in quickly. As far as the high-end of the market goes, I think demand and prices will continue to be strong and stable. ran Palmer says you can get the best of both worlds in Coronado, California—island life and city life. Coronado, a small-town beachfront community, is just a bridge away from downtown San Diego. As an agent with Willis Allen Real Estate in Coronado, Palmer knows a thing or two about beachfront property. She has specialized in selling real estate in the communities along the Southern California coast for the past ten years. Nicknamed “The Crown City,” Coronado is home to approximately 26,000 people, and though it feels like an island, it’s a peninsula
just off the coast of San Diego. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, San Diego Bay, and Glorietta Bay, Palmer says that “regardless of where you are in Coronado, you are close to the water.” The 7.4-square-mile community boasts numerous beaches, parks, dining, and shopping options. The renowned Hotel del Coronado, built in 1888, is here. “The Del,” as it is referred to, is beautiful example of a Victorian beach resort and is a National Historic Landmark. “The majority of people living in Coronado are full-time residents, yet many own second or third homes here,” Palmer says. Residential property options capitalize on the spectacular views of either downtown San Diego or the ocean. She says that prices can range from $600,000 for condos to $18 million for waterfront homes. A prime residential area, Coronado Village is within walking distance of the main business district. “The Village,” as it is called, is known for the architectural aesthetic of its predominantly prewar homes that Palmer describes as everything from charming cottages to stately mansions. Another sought-after neighborhood is Coronado Cays, a marina area south of the Village on the bay side of the Silver Strand, the stretch of land that connects Coronado to San Diego. “Almost every residence here, whether it is a luxury condo or multimillion-dollar home, has its own private boat slip,” Palmer says.

Argenteau Castle O ccupying an exquisite site on Pinellas Point in St. Petersburg, Florida, the “castle” was built in the early 1920s to serve as the Princess de Montglyon’s home and museum for her royal treasures, but she died in Tampa in 1925—supposedly the circumstances were suspicious—before it was finished. Her heir, a half-brother said to be descended from Napoleon, opened the “Argenteau Castle” museum a year later. An advertisement for the museum beckons tourists to view, “for a moderate fee,” the world-famous de Mercy Argenteau collection, featuring screens
