Designed in 1895 by the legendary East Coast architect Stanford White, the 10,000-square-foot, two-story home with wraparound, columned verandas, evokes a feeling of another era. The property features terraces and 19th Century verandas and French doors in every room that allow the house to be open to the balmy Santa Barbara climate. The circa 1917 “Recreation House” features a wood-paneled, curved living room ceiling and an original stone fireplace. It serves as a large two-bedroom guest house and has a private location on the property, as well as its own gated entrance. The home could be rebuilt or expanded if someone desired a larger family compound. THE SOUTHEAST By Eric Snider NAPLES, FLORIDA Unlike Miami—the glitz capitol of the Southeast situated 108 miles down U.S. 41—Naples, Florida is quiet, dignified and exclusive. It’s also one of the most prestigious addresses in the U.S. “It’s a very private social scene, with parties and cultural events, galleries, the best shopping,” says Don Winkler who, with partner Robyn Griffin, sells ultra-high-end homes and condos almost exclusively within Naples’ relative small city limits. “We have CEOs of major companies who have second and third homes here, and they know they can live here quietly and confidentially.” Winkler and Griffin, who work under the John R. Wood, REALTORS umbrella, allow that Naples, like pretty much every other community in America, went through a real estate slump, even in the realm of multi-million-dollar homes. “In most instances, properties sat on the market with very few showings,” Don says. “Most of us who had been in the market for awhile kind of sat on the sidelines. We didn’t encourage someone to buy or sell who didn’t have an immediate need.”
The situation has decidedly changed for the better. “We have certainly seen a recovery,” Robyn says. “There are great values now. We’ve been very busy.” In sales of homes over $2 million, the Naples market has seen a 20 percent increase from the first half of 2009 to the same period in 2010. “We’re seeing a lot of customers once again feeling comfortable going ahead with the transaction,” Don says.
