January/February Issue Dear Reader, You will notice in this issue a renewed focus on the duPont REGISTRY™ Luxury Living in Tampa Bay. We are making a clear and conscious effort to provide you with information on that luxury lifestyle. best, the unusual, and the luxurious. Each of our “dR” features has focused on something or some place that fits that goal. dR REAL ESTATE has chosen two fabulous mansions that, while different in location and style, are similarly and sumptuously comfortable and elegant. dR AUTO features the new redesigned Jaguar XJ. dR STYLE has dazzling jewelry just in time for Valentine’s Day. These various gems of duPont REGISTRY™ Luxury Living in Tampa Bay are reflected in all the additional “dR”
INFINITY POOLS
features including the dR BACK PAGE which zeros in on a “gem” for our community—The New Tampa Museum of Art. We are quite proud of all of the luxurious gems of our various neighborhoods and hope to bring you more with each issue.

One-of-a-Kind Treasures Fig, which stands for fine linens, interior necessities and garden accessories, is a delight for the senses. Owner Marte Kehoe describes her new luxury home store as a very tactile place. The scent from European soaps and candles, water bubbling from a decorative fountain and beautiful, artistic items from around the world create a unique shopping experience. Look for irresistibly silky bed linens from Italy, colorful leather goods from Paris, hand-made pillows from South Africa and unusual bedroom furniture and tables, including 19th century day beds from Asia. An outstanding pair of enormous wood-carved angel wings makes quite a statement. The shop fits perfectly in the renovated art deco Brown Nash Building. 1545 4th Street North, St. Petersburg; 727-820-0344. www.savorthefig.com
East Meets West Kona Grill is the first restaurant in the new Met West International office, hotel, retail and residential development in Tampa’s Westshore market near International Plaza. The restaurant offers lunch, happy hour and dinner in an “upscale casual” atmosphere. A wraparound patio is perfect for outdoor dining at this time of year and the interior design features a trademark blue acrylic wave sculpture over the sushi bar, a large saltwater aquarium as you walk in the front door and a distinctive, colorful Chihuly glass chandelier that resembles tropical flowers from Hawaii. The dinner menu includes appetizers with an Asian twist like Ahi Wonton Crips; entrees such as Macadamia Nut Chicken and Miso-sake Marinated Sea Bass; and Pad Thai Noodles. 4314 West Boy Scout Boulevard, Tampa; 813-877-5938. www.konagrill.com 14 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Date Night Hyde Park’s Cobb Theater joins a few select locations around the country in offering CineBistro, a totally new concept in fine dining and cocktails while you watch first-run movies. Come early to enjoy the full bar in the theater’s lobby. Then thirty minutes before the show, a concierge ushers people to their reserved seats—high-backed comfy leather rocking chairs that you can sink into, says General Manager Sandra Harrison. A server will come by to take your order for appetizers, entrees, salads, sandwiches, deserts, coffees, and maybe a movie-inspired cocktail like the Sex and the City Cosmotini. Serving stops just before the feature begins so you can enjoy the movie uninterrupted. Beer Connoisseur Over 500 different kinds of beer from 17 countries can be found at World of Beer, a new pub in St. Petersburg that offers monthly brewery nights, live weekend entertainment and a retail store. If you’re looking for a unique beer, this is the place. Nothing domestic and mainstream, only craft beers from microbreweries and imports, says Kevin Leung, operations manager and product specialist. About 40 beers are on tap on a rotation basis. Check out the Blue Point Hoptical Illusion from New York, Delirium Noel from Belgium and Sea Dog Bluepaw Wheat Ale from Maine. Wine is also available by the glass or bottle. Contemporary Art An attractive new gallery of contemporary art, the Mindy Solomon Gallery is a wonderful addition to the first floor of the upscale Ovation residential tower in downtown St. Petersburg. Gallery owner Mindy Solomon is a passionate artist, art educator and collector with a special interest in ceramics and what she calls contemporary “narrative” art. Narrative art tells a story, she says. The images are evocative and present more questions than answers. They touch people in meaningful ways. Solomon, who taught art at the Pinellas County Jewish Day School and summer workshops at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center, represents an eclectic variety of artists from around the world. Her current show, through March 27, showcases drawings, paintings and ceramics from American artist Bart Johnson. 5226 4th Street North, St. Petersburg; 727-525-4589. www.wobusa.com dR 16 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

dR TRADITIONS
It’s Better to
Give Than to Receive…
By Susan B. Barnes
F
inding the perfect gift for that special someone can oftentimes be challenging, and the gift, elusive. Following are some ideas that will hopefully inspire, or at least get the ball rolling.
A sweet for my sweet Sure, a box of chocolates is a traditional Valentine’s gift, but how about chocolate that rekindles memories? Maybe you popped into a little shop on your last vacation together, or there’s a childhood favorite just waiting to be revisited. With a quick click of the mouse, you can have something delicious delivered in no time. And if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll get a nibble.
Begin your own tradition Starting a tradition that is between just the two of you can be incredibly romantic. Perhaps you’ll present a single pearl necklace, and add to the strand every year. Or, a charm bracelet that holds special memories shared between you, and only you. For those less jewelry inclined, perhaps a piece of a china pattern or unique teapot each year, or start a library including all
the works of a favorite author. Traditions are built to last; why not start yours this year?
A picture is worth… In this day and age of digital photos, e-mail and Facebook, make an appointment to have your portrait taken together to display proudly in your home or at the office. Photographers are more than willing to work with their clients to capture the essence of their relationships, so take a walk on the beach, climb aboard your sailboat or relax at home—a picture is worth a thousand words, after all. It could even be worth a thousand kisses. Hmmm… Maybe my husband will surprise me with chocolates from my favorite Philadelphia candy shop where we ordered our wedding favors…I might even share—as the saying goes, it’s better to give than to receive! dR

Appliance manufacturers are scaling down but not scaling back their products for those with smaller kitchens.
By Gale Steves

ith the new economy, bigger has become too much of a show-off, and the appliance people really have taken a long hard look at their luxury customers. Some of us have condos or town houses, where space can be an issue. Others have older homes, which do not lend themselves to gargantuan kitchens. Or maybe the room layout cannot be radically altered without giving up other needed amenities, such as powder room or pantry. Because of room layout or inclination, these kitchens are simply not going to get any bigger. The good news is that now those of us who sat on the sidelines, watching with a little envy those mega appliances in other’s kitchens, have been rewarded for our patience. Brands such as Viking, Sub-Zero, and Wolf have started to scale down their appliances for us. Other relative newcomers to the U.S. market, Miele, and Liebherr, are bringing smaller or thinner luxury products that were success stories in Europe. And some former commercial-only companies, such as Perlick, have moved over to the consumer side with smaller versions of their appliances. Hurray for those who believe that smaller is better!
Slim and Trim Liebherr’s twenty-four-inch freestanding Refrigerator/Freezer is a smart choice for streamlined spaces. The innovative LED light towers double as shelf support. Available at Appliance Gallery, 13055 Starkey Road, Largo, 727-530-5150, www.appliance-gallery.com

It has four powerful burners and a convection oven, which fits into a regular cabinet depth space. Available at Appliance Gallery, 13055 Starkey Road, Largo, 727-530-5150, www.appliance-gallery.com

world of choices to discover at all price points. The inner spring, which uses steel coils as support, is still the top seller. The newer type made of memory foam or latex are durable and very supportive. Another category is the air-bed that provides flexible support for both sleepers. Whatever you select, try it out first. “Please lie down,” says Mikael Eskildsen of Scan Design of Tampa. “It will change your life!” And do not be afraid to lie
down in different horizontal positions for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Think about the time you spend testing and trying a car, and yet many of us are reluctant to “testdrive” our new sleep products. Here are some luxurious choices to get you started.

Why do we hang onto our mattresses as though they were family heirlooms? They really need to be replaced every 7 years to assure that good night’s sleep, which is, for some of us, a very precious thing. ravel and romance often go hand in hand, and simply hearing (or reading) the names of cities conjure romantic images—Paris. Venice. Tahiti. These romantic destinations are alternatives to those perennial favorites, and may just become one of your favorite spots for a getaway.
South American Jewel Bristol Buenaventura, approximately 80 minutes west of Panama City, Panama, is a luxurious resort ideal for a romantic retreat. Lush vegetation and stunning views of lakes and the waters of the Pacific Ocean set the scene for the 126 lavish rooms and eight villas. A stay at the resort is filled with refined elegance, impeccable service, and immense pampering. During the day, play a round of golf on the Nicklaus Design golf course, go bird watching, lounge on the beach or indulge in decadent spa treatments. At night, dine in one of the resorts five distinctive restaurants and stroll along the beach under a star-filled sky. www.thebristol.com/buenaventura

Castries capital at St Lucia.
Good Day, Sunshine St. Lucia, in the eastern Caribbean, offers a great variety of activities, from relaxing at a world-class spa to outdoor pursuits such as diving, snorkeling, sailing, yachting, wind surfing, hiking, and trail riding. Rendezvous is a couples-only boutique, all-inclusive resort on a two-mile stretch of beach near Castries, the island’s capital, and is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway—either a second honeymoon or a kids-free vacation. After a day of relaxation, enjoy an exquisite dinner and let the perfumes of the blooming flowers from the surrounding botanical garden melt you deeper into relaxation. www.theromanticholiday.com

upid, that little cherub who delighted in shooting arrows at mortals to make them fall in love, has long been associated with Valentine’s Day, a time when we let our significant others know of our affection and appreciation. Chocolate, flowers, and jewelry are traditional gifts on Valentine’s Day. But this year why not get creative and plan a private getaway to spice things up and add a little passion and pizzazz? You don’t have to go far. Tampa Bay has some great venues for romance. Start with dinner at Armani’s, handsdown among the most elegant and romantic restaurants in the area. You can enjoy background piano music and watch the sunset over the water while you sip one of the restaurant’s signature cocktails, like Limoncello, a sweet, lemony Italian liqueur. The restaurant’s location on the top floor of the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay and the floor-to-ceiling windows offer spectacular panoramic views of the Bay. For dinner, choose from a nice selection of Northern Italian dishes like veal scaloppini over mascarpone polenta, seared Chilean sea bass or roasted wild boar chop. Armani’s white linen tablecloth service is impeccable and there is a new spruced up decor to match. After dinner, drive over and check into the Sandpearl, the new Clearwater Beach hotel ranked eighth on Expedia.com’s list of top hotels worldwide last year. Reserve a gulffront “junior suite” with a king bed, roman style tub, separate sitting area, and a private balcony overlooking 700 feet of pristine white sand. Catch a nightcap at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Caretta on the Gulf. For a special surprise, book a spa treatment for two the next day. The top-rated Spa at Sandpearl offers a special couples’

The Masley Optimal Health Center provides the tools you’ll need to be ten years younger, trimmer, fitter, and mental sharper. Steven Masley, MD, FAAFP, CNS
D
iscover the secret to looking and feeling healthier, sexier, and stronger than you have in a decade, and restoring mental quickness, skin tone, and fitness. Not only would you look and feel younger, but you’d be physiologically younger on the inside, too. The answer utilizes a comprehensive and scientifically proven Ten Years Younger Program combining a Sweet Sixteen Vitality Food list with both an “Age Busting Fitness Program” and a “Relaxation Routine” to empower you to turn back the clock. An optimal health evaluation focuses upon multiple aspects of aging that can be enhanced with optimal lifestyle changes. The concern is that most people don’t know how they are aging on the inside from a typical medical evaluation, so their goals are often off target. An optimal evaluation should enable you to measure aging—allowing you to prioritize your health goals, and then empower you to achieve them. Combining a diet, exercise, and a stress management routine together with a comprehensive evaluation and a focused action plan can create a new you—enabling you to reverse up to ten years of normal aging in just ten weeks time. Not only will you be healthier, but you’ll feel terrific as well, and feeling great is what makes any program truly worth following.

r. Joseph C. Jackson, Jr., is proud to introduce Clear Smiles to the St. Petersburg area. Clear Smiles is a boutique experience in adult invisible orthodontic treatment with convenient, efficient appointment timing. Our doctor-directed treatment sequencing is based on individual response and was created to allow our patients to undergo orthodontic correction without social awareness. Where to eat around the bay AQUAKNOX GLOBAL WATER CUISINE 7627 Courtney Campbell Causeway in the Westin Tampa Bay Airport, Tampa. 813-675-8700 or www.aquaknox.com AquaKnox has made a huge splash with its Global Water menu, and ultra-chic decor. Occupying over 10,000 square feet, AquaKnox provides a modern, open atmosphere and the water-encased, walk-in wine tower is visually captivating, and functionally spectacular, housing over 400 selections. The centrally located, state-of-the-art kitchen and raw bar, visible from virtually every table, offers an open elegance, while a private chef's table is designated for guests wishing for a more intimate experience. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner: Seven days a week. Reservations recommended.
BACKFIN BLUE CAFÉ 2913 Beach Boulevard South, Gulfport. 727-343-2583 or www.backfinbluecafe.com People come for the baked-not-fried crab cakes, which are Maryland style, filled with jumbo lump blue crab and very little else. Owner and chef Harold Russell, who ran the kitchen at the Hurricane on Pass-A-Grille and Shula’s in Tampa before opening this spot in 1997, serves up hearty comfort foods and fish dishes in a charming bungalow, where cans of Old Bay Seasoning figure into the décor. Dinner only: Mondays and Wednesdays through Sundays. Reservations accepted for parties of five or more. Kids’ menu available.
CENTRAL AVENUE OYSTER BAR AquaKnox Global Water Cuisine
249 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg. 727-897-9728 or www.centralavenueoysterbar.com Oysters are the stars here, with freshly shucked Louisiana Selects served raw, fried, or baked on the half shell. Sit at the long, white marble bar and enjoy the lively banter in this neighborhood place. Or for a more formal dining experience luxuriate at a table. Wherever you choose to sit, though, the food, which also includes fish, steaks, pasta, and chicken, is as good as the big-city ambience. Lunch and dinner: Seven days a week. Reservations accepted.
CEVICHE TAPAS BAR AND RESTAURANT 10 Beach Drive, St. Petersburg, 727-209-2302; 1502 South Howard Avenue, Tampa, 813-250-0203. www.ceviche.com Today it’s a mini chain with four locations. But when Ceviche first opened in Tampa in 1995, it had only a handful of tables. Thankfully, it still lacks chain ambience. Nothing feels canned, and nothing tastes bland either. A dizzying list of traditional tapas, pinchos, ceviches, paellas, and cazuelas are accompanied by more inventive little dishes, such as ceviche a la Rusa Charley’s Steak House & Market Fresh Fish 60 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay
(an oyster ceviche topped with caviar and chilled vodka). Some warm dishes are drenched in sherry and cream and taste so divine that you wonder why they haven’t sparked a trend. You can wash everything down with sangria or Spanish wine, sherry, cider, or beer, take in Flamenco at the Flamenco Bar, and end the meal by splitting a towering torta de tres leches. The Tampa location offers poolside dining, and the St. Pete one occupies three separate restaurant spaces, really, at the Ponce de Leon hotel, and it’s a see-and-be-seen place. In Tampa: dining room and Flamenco Bar open seven days a week; Sundays open for brunch. In St. Pete: breakfast, lunch, and dinner served seven days a week at Pincho; dining room and Flamenco Bar open seven days a week.
CHARLEY’S STEAK HOUSE & MARKET FRESH FISH 4444 West Cypress Street, Tampa. 813-353-9706 or www.talkofthetownrestaurants.com Charley’s serves only the best USDA Prime and Choice cuts which come from three-year-old grain fed steers. The steaks are cooked on a 1,100-degree open pit fueled by oak and Florida citrus woods. Charley’s also offers an array of amenities—among them a private dining room and wine lockers. The overall ambience is unpretentious. It’s like home—except that you don’t have to flip the steaks yourself. Dinner only: Seven days a week. Reservations accepted.

MARLIN DARLIN KEY WEST GRILL 2819 West Bay Drive, Belleair Bluffs. 727-584-1700 or www.marlindarlin.net This fancy-but-casual seafood joint also serves steaks and likes to keep the landlubbers happy. Fish foodies will be in their element, though. GRILLE ONE SIXTEEN 15405 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. 813-265-0116 or www.grilleonesixteen.com It’s glamorous in a part of town that is so not glamorous that lounging in the elegant bar or dining in a stylish booth feels defiant. Yes, new American cuisine served in modern swank can change the world for a little while. Beyond the fancy, understated décor, though, the food is steak house and then some. Organic steaks and perfectly cooked fish tempt those in for more than just nibbling. Otherwise you can make a meal sharing appetizers, salads, and desserts. Side dishes are steak house standards, upscaled a bit and served family style. Dinner: Seven days a week. Reservations accepted.

Coowner and chef Doug Bebell knows his fish and you’ll find seafood standards, Sashimi, of Yellow Fin Tuna, like Maine lobMystic Fish sters, yellowfin tuna, and salmon cooked traditionally and with invention on the menu. For example, blackened Chilean sea bass is seasoned with ginger, soy, and seaweed, and the rare tuna gets Thai garlic-chili sauce and Japanese spices. Despite its name, Mystic Fish has a reputation among meat lovers, too. The steaks are hormone free, thankfully, and the New Zealand rack of lamb in a Guinness demi-glace has a following. Matthew Hillier, Extraordinary wildlife painter atthew Hillier's extraordinary wild-life paintings offer the viewer a unique vantage point. His paintings express more than the physical characteristics of a species; they reveal the artist’s passion for his subjects. Although he now resides in the U.S., Hillier was born in Buckinghamshire, England in 1958, and has spent most his life on the south coast of England. Drawing and painting animals is something he has loved to do since he was a child. Before his eighteenth birthday he had three of his paintings accepted by the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Hillier’s father was a museum designer who taught his son the rudiments of painting with watercolor, a medium Hillier used during his years as an illustrator, along with gouache. He is now best known for his acrylic paintings, although he loves the challenge of oils. Traveling widely in search of subjects to study and paint, Hillier has visited Africa many times, India, other parts of Europe, and throughout Southeast Asia. He loves the big cats and rhinos and finds himself drawn to water birds. Since moving to the States, he has begun painting North American subjects in addition to the dramatic African and bird subjects for which he is renowned. Hillier has been the recipient of many honors and awards, including here in St. Petersburg where he received the “People’s Choice" award at the Plainsmen Gallery in Raymond James Financial, 2002 and 2004. When he first moved to the states he spent a year and a half in Sarasota, Florida. He presently lives with his wife, artist Julia Rogers, and his young son. Not to mention two ghastly Chihuahuas, a German Shepherd, and a fat cat, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Matthew will take part in the Wildlife & Western Art Show at Raymond James Financial on April 24 and 25, 2010 in St. Petersburg, FL. dR

PAIRINGS MADE SIMPLE

Sauvignon Blanc taste thin and sour. In reality, a majority would most likely discover that this pairing does not work at all. And once again, the expertise is coming from your palate, not your vast knowledge of food and wine pairing. What must always be considered is the heaviness of the food and the wine as sensed by the palate. Be careful not to pay too much attention to the color of the wine, but most importantly, its body.
A very simple rule of thumb is that heavy wine goes with heavy food and light wine goes with light food. Foods that have been over seasoned with chilis, garlic, and onions are more risky choices because any wine could absorb their flavors. It’s very important to consider how one trait of the wine can alter your perception of the food and vice versa. Wines with a rich alcohol content can cause spicy foods to taste even hotter as the alcohol generates a heat sensation on the palate which can adversely over magnify the spice in the food. With so many wines to choose from and an equally daunting number of recipes, the combinations and possible outcomes

It seems like forever, or since the beginning of time, that culinaires have been puzzled by the stubborn and perplexing rules of food and wine pairing. A bottle of white with seafood or fowl, and then of course a full bodied red with red meat. Ah, if it were only this easy, then the discussion would have discontinued long ago. That being said, how do you select the perfect wine to compliment your favorite recipe? Everyone has different tastes and so the key is to trust your own tastebuds. If you crave a pairing of an Australian Sauvignon Blanc with a oak-grilled ribeye, then bravo! Your endeavors in food and wine pairing are a success. Your tastebuds can deliver all of the notification you need to deem whether or not you have made a good or bad selection. More than likely, in the former scenario, the chooser would find that the Sauvignon Blanc interacts adversely with the charred areas of the beef, resulting in a taste that is salty or perhaps bitter. Reciprocally, the beef could make the

are nearly infinite. Perhaps your most prudent course of action is to experiment, let your palate be your guide and most likely you will become the "expert chooser" when it comes to food and wine pairing. Some of the worlds greatest composers learned "by ear." Think of using your palate in the same manner, be daring and bold. And just think of all the fun you'll have. dR

Dean Mitchell: Visions with Heart and Soul
“I paint ordinary people because I am ordinary.” –Dean Mitchell Dean Mitchell is a Florida-born artist who has achieved both national and international acclaim. He recently moved to the Tampa Bay area from Kansas City. Mitchell grew up in Quincy, Florida, just west of Tallahassee, where his grandmother and a few encouraging teachers nurtured his talent in art. His ability at conveying realistic images in watercolor afforded him the opportunity to fund his college education. Afterwards he received a coveted artistic position at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Missouri, where he remained until 1983. Since that time, Mitchell has been working solely as an artist. This is his first major exhibition in the Tampa Bay area. Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art

Wicked
February 3–28
Spellbinding, magical and bewitching. Wicked is about female power—claiming it, wielding it, yielding it. Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One—born with emerald green skin—is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for “the most complete and completely satisfying new musical in a long time.” It’s based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, but if you read it, don’t come to the musical expecting a faithful re-creation of that richly inhabited fantasy world. Wicked is its own winningly quirky fairy tale. The Straz Center 82 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Modern Grace Designed by Stanley Saitowitz of Natoma Architects in San Francisco, the new Tampa Museum of Art graces downtown Tampa with grand design. The 66,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art Cornelia Corbett Center is elegantly wrapped in over three-thousand perforated aluminum sheets, shimmering by day, and illuminated by New York artist Leo Villareal’s LED exterior installation in the evening. The ground level boasts Sono Café (operated by Mise En Place), a museum store, a soaring three-story atrium that creates a breathtaking aesthetic and lobby areas that lead out to 18,000 square feet of outdoor space under a cantilevered overhang. This connects visitors to the park and provides expansive open-air views. The museum’s second floor offers seven expansive interior galleries that flow freely from one to another and surround the atrium and one exterior sculpture gallery, creating 14,000-square-feet of exhibition space. Located in Tampa’s Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the museum opens its doors with the special exhibition, A Celebration of Henri Matisse: Master of Line and Light, which will remain on view through April 18, 2010. This presentation unites works drawn from the collection of The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) with Matisse as Printmaker; works from the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation, a traveling exhibition organized by the American Matisse Foundation. The new Tampa Museum’s art speaks volumes without uttering a word. dR
