FROM THE PUBLISHER JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015
Dear Reader, With the New Year we bring you our annual Real Estate issue, featuring the latest trends in luxury home design and the most lavish properties currently available in our market. We talked with the most elite homebuilders to discover unique aspects of their multimillion dollar creations. Homebuyers with discerning tastes appreciate the finer things, so we explored specialties such as custom wine cellars, boutique-style closets and custom garages to house their collections. dR REAL ESTATE walks you through the ten most highly valued local homes and asks the exclusive listing Realtors for their insights on market trends. Widely known as the “Sport of Kings,” polo season is now upon us. While Wellington/Palm Beach is well known for this sport, and most know it can be seen in Sarasota as well, few are aware of the matches played locally. DI Polo hosts countless matches throughout the season, and will hold the fourth annual Morgan Auto Group Charity Polo Classic in March. We also spoke with top international polo player Nic Roldan about his love of the game and why he thinks its popularity is burgeoning. dR TRAVEL focuses on a Bahamian private island retreat known as the Beach House Villas. A short flight on a private jet and a five minute boat charter land you in paradise. Just five individual residences on an intimate island with five-star amenities can ease just about anyone into relaxation. Take the new Aston Martin DB9 for a spin with dR AUTO. Although it has a timelessly elegant appearance, don’t let looks fool you. This hand built V-12 is the epitome of craftsmanship and packs 517 horsepower. For a more personal experience with this and hundreds of other unique and exotic cars, I invite you to join us at our Cars and Coffee event from 7 to 9 a.m. It’s always on the third Saturday of every month and I hope to see you there! Enjoy!

A BAHAMIAN RETREAT Beach House Villas on Paradise Island

H
op a short flight on your private jet and take a five-minute boat ride with Captain Richard from a private dock just beyond the hustle and bustle of downtown Nassau and you’ve arrived in paradise: your own private Bahamian retreat at Beach House Villas on Paradise Island. Accessible only by boat or a stroll along the beach, just five villas comprise Beach House Villas, and the entirety of the property spans the western end of Paradise Island, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Nassau Harbor. Each of the luxurious, custom-designed, standalone homes affords waterfront views, essentially providing an out-island lifestyle minutes from everything. Ranging in size from three- to four-bedrooms and 3,109 – 5,290 square feet, each of the villas is custom-furnished and cooled yearround by the Bahamian tropical breezes, and central air conditioning. The villas’ high-quality construction is itself hurricane-proof, and includes marble, stonework, natural textures, and high-end appliances 36 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
and fixtures. Outside, private yards complete with waterfront pools and a semi-private beach add to the allure, and tranquility. Staying in your private home at Beach House Villas is complimented by the exclusive five-star amenities afforded ownership: a private boat with a full-time captain on staff; private dock; private gym; full-time concierge, chef, laundry and housekeeping services; and ground keeping to care for the private gardens and landscaping. When it’s time to leave the privacy of your own home and venture out into the “real” world, hop on the boat and ask Captain Richard to take you wherever your heart desires! A short boat ride or walk along the beach away are the five-star restaurants at the Atlantis Resort and Casino (atlantisbahamas. com/dining), including Nobu from Japanese Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Café Martinique from Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Casa d’Angelo from South Florida’s Chef Angelo Elia, Chef Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill and Chef Todd English’s Olives.
Elsewhere on the island, One&Only Ocean Club (oceanclub.one andonlyresorts.com) features a Tom Weiskopf-designed, 18-hole golf course, as well as Dune, a stunning ocean-front restaurant also from Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. It’s easy to find a true private island experience when in the Bahamas—of the 700 islands, only 30 are inhabited. For an out-of-theordinary day, charter a small plane, fly to Staniel Key, about 100 miles from Paradise Island, and you may even get to swim with pigs. Yes, pigs! Other favorite remote getaways are Thunderball Grotto, also in Staniel Key, or Compass Cay. Closer to shore, why not take an America’s Cup sailing yacht out for the day? Beach House Villas is developed by Brennan Custom Homes, with offices in Palm Beach and Toronto. Joe Brennan, principal, has been designing and building high-end custom homes and condos ranging in price from $2 million to more than $75 million for more than 35 years. Brennan Custom Homes is a full-service firm, including design,
architecture, construction, project management and development. The firm’s custom works have been featured in Architectural Digest and The Wall Street Journal. The Beach House Villas range in price from $5.5 million to $8 million, with property taxes not to exceed 2 percent, or $35,000; a monthly homeowners’ association fee of approximately $3,000 is also assessed. For more information on the available villas, please visit beachhousevillasparadiseisland.com.

ROOMS OVER MIAMI AND NAPLES There are plenty of options when it comes to exquisite resorts throughout Florida. Two that few can hold a candle to are the recently-renovated penthouse suite at the AAA 4-Diamond Hilton Bentley South Beach on Ocean Drive, and LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort, a true, beachfront boutique resort on Florida’s Gulf Coast in Naples.

The Kardashian sisters called the Hilton Bentley penthouse suite home during their time in Miami, and now you can, too. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the sumptuously appointed 3,500-square-foot, two-story suite is filled with loads of luxurious amenities and space to spread out. Inside, a full stainless-steel kitchen in which to whip up breakfast, lunch, or dinner awaits, as does a personal wine cellar, dining and living rooms, two master bedrooms and three bathrooms. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the varying blues and shimmering movements of the Atlantic Ocean just beyond. Outside, however, is where the suite truly shines. The multi-million dollar renovation features a new, private 1,500-square-foot sun deck with rooftop infinity pool and Jacuzzi, and two private terraces on which to relax or entertain. The sweeping views of South Beach and the ocean from the sun deck are simply spectacular. Though there’s little reason to leave the penthouse suite, just downstairs is De Rodriguez Cuba, a AAA 4-Diamond award-winning restaurant led by Chef Douglas Rodriguez that’s made its name by featuring Latin dishes with a twist. Though he’s recently revamped the menu, Chef Rodriguez has promised to always pay tribute to his signature dishes: Smoked Marlin Tacos, The Churrasco, Sugar Cane Tuna and Kobe Meatballs are a mainstay. And if the menu appealing but leaving the penthouse isn’t, in-suite service is available. A la Marie Antoinette, guests can essentially have their cake and eat it, too. What’s more, just steps outside Hilton Bentley is famed South Beach and Ocean Drive, lined with restaurants and clubs for dining and dancing—or simply people-watching—well into the night. South Florida’s playground is there for the taking. Reservations for the Hilton Bentley penthouse suite are now available, and overnight rates range from $2,700 to $7,500, seasonally.

suite accommodations, an iced magnum of Veuve Clicquot and two Swarovski crystal champagne flutes, a 48-foot chartered luxury yacht for one day, “toes in the sand” dinner at BALEEN, a reserved beachside fire pit with a bottle of champagne, daily in-suite breakfast with mimosas and more. LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort, a part of the Noble House Hotels & Resorts collection, has earned itself a coveted spot on the Condé Nast Traveler “Gold List,” and is ranked number two in the magazine’s “Best Florida Resorts List”—and it’s no surprise. The boutique resort’s simple yet elegant décor, tranquil landscape and unbeatable views of the Gulf of Mexico make it a true retreat from the world outside. Also at LaPlaya are the ultra-exclusive David Leadbetter Golf Academy with a private, 18-hole Bob Cupp golf course and SpaTerre for ultimate relaxation. Reservations for Champagne Wishes at LaPlaya are now available, and three-night rates start at $18,000. The next time you find yourself in South Florida, why not stay in a room over Miami or Naples?
When You Go Direct flights are available on various airlines from Tampa to Miami, or it’s just a four hour drive from the Bay area to Miami, and two and a half hours to Naples. PONIES ON THE RUN
P
Polo Championship®. Each match begins at 3 p.m., but make plans to arrive early for an elaborate champagne brunch – this is the place to see and be seen in Palm Beach during polo season. What’s more, the club is the only polo facility in the U.S. that features high-goal polo, attracting the world’s most elite polo players for the winter polo season; Roldan plays for the Audi 20-goal team. Closer to home, Dardo Iglesias from DI Polo Tour invites pro polo players who are in Wellington/Palm Beach to participate in monthly high-goal matches at its Plant City facilities during the season, through April. Additional matches are played each weekend through the season, and players come in from throughout Florida, as well as Atlanta, South Carolina and New York. On Saturday, March 21, the Morgan Auto Group Charity Polo Classic will be held at DI Polo Tour, and all proceeds benefit the Children’s Cancer Center and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. This year’s classic begins at 11 a.m., and the day will be filled with traditional polo activities such as a match with top polo stars, stomping of the divots, and live and silent auctions. What better way is there to spend a weekend in Florida than out in the sunshine, sipping champagne and watching the ponies run?

olo is primarily known for its social aspect, from half-time divot stomping to the big parties that are thrown before and after the matches. But top international polo player Nic Roldan has a different perspective. “Above all, I think what most people enjoy is watching the match itself—the intensity of the sport, the beauty of the horses running down the field,” said Roldan. “It’s a beautiful sport to watch.” “The reaction I get from most people when they watch polo is that they’re shocked at how intense it is and how much fun it is to watch.” It’s polo season here in Florida, and some of the biggest, most prestigious tournaments in the U.S., and in fact around the world, are played on the polo fields right here in the Sunshine State. Since 1991, the Sarasota Polo Club has been showcasing the “fastest game on four feet” in central west Florida, and today boasts nine world-class polo fields. The 2015 season at the Sarasota Polo Club began mid-December and runs through April 12; gates open each Sunday at 10 a.m., and all matches begin at 1 p.m., complete with divot stomping and half-time entertainment. Reserve a tailgate spot in the Members Only section for the season and make a day of it. The International Polo Club Palm Beach in South Florida kicked off its 16-week season early-January and continues each Sunday through April 19 when the season culminates with the 111th U.S. Open

Nic Roldan was born in Argentina and raised in Wellington in South Florida. He’s played in matches all around the world, yet always enjoys playing back home in Florida. “Playing in Florida is home for me, but besides that, the International Polo Club Palm Beach is the biggest polo club in the world,” said Roldan. When Roldan noticed the growth of the polo and equestrian community in Wellington, he and his friend/fellow polo player Brandon Phillips were inspired to found Bedford Park International, a real estate advisement firm primarily focused on equestrian facilities, with Darren Marotta and Tara Lordi Construction. The firm oversees everything from design to permit to landscaping and more. “You can only play polo for so long, like any professional sport, and we were thinking about our futures,” said Roldan. “I’ve always had an interest in architecture and interior design (Nic’s mother is an interior designer), and there wasn’t really a company doing turn-key equestrian facilities.” Bedford Park’s first project is a contemporary and decadent barn in Grand Prix Village South, very near the International Polo Club Palm Beach. The 17,500 square foot barn sits on four acres and features an amazing 20-stall barn with four wash stalls, two tack rooms, a laundry room and a feed room. The owners’ lounge is just as luxe, with a professional kitchen and a great room for entertaining and views of the 220’ x 120’ competition ring. A separate, four-bedroom grooms’ apartment and six paddocks are also included. (Listing price: $13 million) In addition, this year the team is developing the most luxurious equestrian estates in Wellington, including eight farms on 10-acre parcels.

INVESTING IN YOUR HEALTH
Executive Wellness, Concierge Medicine
The day Mark Fernandez, senior vice president of the Tampa Bay Rays, walked into the Monsour Executive Wellness Center for a routine physical, he had no idea the comprehensive executive examination would turn up arterial blockage. Luckily, there were hundreds of specialists available at a moment’s notice and within hours he had met with a cardiologist and scheduled the surgery. The executive—still in his forties and with no family history of heart disease—would require a cardiac stent to relieve an artery that was 99-percent blocked. The executive physical at Monsour Center that saved Fernandez from an eventual heart attack is one of several types of high-level, client-driven health care available throughout Tampa Bay. From personalized, one-day physicals like Monsour’s to medical concierge services—for those willing to pay for better healthcare, the options are as unique as the patient. Monsour Center is a division of USF Health and is located within the USF Health Morsani Center for Advanced Healthcare in Tampa. The program targets busy professionals, offering full-service customized physicals that take the hassle out of healthcare. Blood work is done ahead of time, at home or at the office. A medical staff member plans the physical based on a health questionnaire and escorts the patient throughout the facility, which is a working medical center staffed with nearly every specialty from audiology to orthopedics.

Medical results are expedited to the primary physician, who spends up to an hour and half reviewing the information with the patient. Within four to seven hours, patients leave with a USB flash drive of medical records and the comforting knowledge that their health has been evaluated correctly and comprehensively.
For other people, the doctor-patient relationship is most important. Concierge medicine fills this role. It is a growing industry with an estimated 12,000 physicians in 2014 offering such boutique services, up from about 5,500 in 2013, according to the online website Concierge Medicine Today. Florida is one of the hottest spots in the nation for what is also known as direct-care. In it, medical doctors—often internists or family physicians—limit their practice to a certain number of patients, who each pay annual or monthly fees for full access to their guidance and expertise, explains Sharon Fekete, owner of The Doctor Whisperer, a medical marketing firm. Gigi C. Lefebvre, MD, of Lagniappe Medical, P.A. in St. Petersburg, limits her practice to concierge medicine. She believes patients prefer fast response to their medical questions and the kind of care that identifies medical problems early, before they become expensive life-threatening emergencies. Patients, and even entire families, will see Dr. Lefebvre for their regular care. Questions are answered through emails, medical infor-

mation accessed through online portals, and specialists’ results reviewed and reinterpreted by Dr. Lefebvre. Time with patients is more relaxed, allowing for the physician to truly be a “medical home,” in which the patient’s entire care is coordinated and overseen, she explains. At TruWell health in St. Petersburg, Lora L. Brown, MD delivers the “TruWell Comprehensive Physical,” an examination that seeks root causes of medical issues through tests designed to pinpoint cellular deficiencies. One patient, she says, lived with a pacemaker implant for arrhythmia. “The TruWell evaluation revealed severe nutritional deficiencies in zinc, magnesium, alpha lipoic acid, and most of his B-vitamins. These deficiencies were the cause of his arrhythmias,” she says. Now, although he still has the pacemaker, it no longer activates. Blood work, physical assessment, and physician report are con-

ducted over several days. Tests include comprehensive laboratory, thyroid, and hormone panels, nutritional analysis using blood and urine, and a physical appraisal as well as a nutritional analysis, which is based on a four-day food journal kept by the patient. “We are able to take this assessment and create a complete lifestyle change that includes diet, exercise, stress management, nutritional supplements, and hormones to engage the body in a transformation that will slow down the typical effects of aging,” she says. Many patients are diagnosed with gastrointestinal malabsorption problems, which can result in nutritional deficiencies; others arrive with low thyroid levels that are ultimately tied to toxins residing in their bodies. Dr. Brown says most arrive with symptoms of aging—weight gain, menopause—but once their hormone and nutrition levels are evaluated—they leave with a new perspective: “Our goal is to optimize every patient so they are able to age with more vitality and health.”

REAL ESTATE
By Janan Talafer
TARPON SPRINGS TO RUSKIN Tampa Bay’s Top 10 Luxury Homes For Sale Location is always the driving factor in real estate and Tampa Bay certainly delivers with its many beautiful waterfront properties, historic estates and upscale gated golf course communities. As we move into 2015, here’s a look at the region’s most magnificent estate homes, all of which are currently on the market, waiting for that perfect buyer to step forward and move in. 3255 BUFFALO RUN, TARPON SPRINGS $14,300,000 The highest priced property currently for sale in Tampa Bay, this magnificent 16-acre Mediterranean estate offers a dazzling array of luxuries. The main residence—21,000 square feet under one roof— has an old-world grandeur with travertine marble floors and massive iron doors that open onto a foyer with a 26-foot vaulted ceiling. Wine connoisseurs will love the 12,000-bottle sunken wine cellar, while fitness buffs will enjoy the gym with full-circuit fitness equipment and spa with sauna and steam room. The most unique feature is The Village, a whimsical entertainment wing that offers something for everyone: movie house with marquee, pub, poker and cigar room, loft-style music lounge, ice-cream shop and library. Outside, a gated boardwalk leads to 11 miles of horseback riding trails. There is also an amazing resort-style pool area with 14 waterfalls, lazy river, rope bridge, water slide through a mountain and swim-up Tiki bar, as well as a separate 6,200-square-foot guest home.

16 AMBLESIDE DRIVE, BELLEAIR $11,900,000 One of the most unique features of this four-acre estate is the 60-seat private restaurant with bar and commercial kitchen for entertaining guests—a testament to the previous owner who was associated with Outback Steakhouse. The seven-bedroom, 10,574square-foot home overlooks Clearwater Harbor for great sunset views. The property is one of the largest waterfront parcels in Pinellas County and has significant potential, allowing developers to easily subdivide it into several lots, says Courtney Heye, listing agent. Two docks and a deep-water channel make the estate a boater’s dream. The home’s French Provincial interior features a spectacular winding staircase in the foyer, as well as gym, steam room and sauna. In addition, there is a two-bedroom guest suite, one-bedroom apartment, pool house and basketball court.
144 WILLADEL DRIVE, BELLEAIR $12,900,000 Perched 50-feet above Clearwater Harbor, this five-bedroom, 12,935-square-foot home offers a commanding view of the harbor, Gulf and Intracoastal Waterway. The home is built to withstand 170mile-per-hour winds and has an exterior of block, brick and stone reminiscent of an English or French country manor. The interior architectural details are exquisite and include custom handmade cabinetry, millwork and crown molding, as well as floors in herringbone wood, porcelain and stone dredged from the Baltic Sea. The master suite has a safe room accessible from three entrances. There is also a theatre room, music room, custom wine cellar, formal living and dining rooms, and beautiful wood-paneled den. On the 1.7 acre grounds, you’ll find a Koi pond and extravagant Polynesian lagoonstyled pool with Japanese covered bridge, 51-foot slide, waterfall features, spa and pool-side cabana. Rafal Wazio, Engel & Volkers, listing agent Rafal specializes in unique luxury waterfront estates and penthouse homes in Clearwater Beach, Harbor Oaks, Belleair and Sand Key. 332 BLANCA AVE. TAMPA
$5,200,000
This grand six-bedroom Mediterranean-style Davis Islands waterfront estate was designed for entertaining. A spacious living room opens to a game room and dining room—all with beautiful water views. Step outside and you’ll find a six-hole putting green, a large pool and a covered boatlift that has a 10,000-capacity, plus two additional lifts for jet skis. The home also features a library with custom woodwork and bookshelves, gourmet kitchen, fitness center, butler’s pantry, home theater, custom closets in the master suite and an impressive foyer with spectacular curved floating staircase.
LOOKING BACK AT 2014 The duPont REGISTRY Luxury Living in Tampa Bay asked the listing agents for the area’s top real estate to reflect on the luxury real estate market in 2014. Almost without exception, the consensus was that 2014 was a challenging year, with cash buyers being more discriminating than ever and lower overall sales. “I think many people may not have been willing to put their money in bricks and mortars when the financial markets were doing so well,” says Rafal Wazio. “The homes that did sell had a timeless, aesthetic appeal to them; the buyers were demanding real quality for their money.” Buyers were definitely looking for a bargain, says Martha Thorn. “Unlike South Florida, where many of the buyers are coming from South America and had money to burn, the market here is different and buyers, even in the high-price range, wanted to pay considerably off the listing price.”
BUYER PROFILE “Many of the buyers in the luxury market are very family centered, which means they are looking for a spacious retreat where their entire family, including parents, children and grandchildren can gather and spend time together,” says Diane Swainston. Bonifacio Tejedor agrees. “Interest rates are good, Florida is a no-tax state and everyone from young entrepreneurs to retirees sees our area as appealing,” he says. The idea of escaping higher taxes elsewhere in the country is definitely an incentive for some buyers, says Krista Maddox. So is the opportunity to have a first or second home in sunny Florida, she says. “Florida’s weather is always a draw,” says Courtney Heye. “Many of those looking were retirees who wanted to escape the cold—it was a tough winter in places like Buffalo. Florida certainly looked pretty inviting.”
Additional amenities include a garage that can accommodate 15 cars, a guest suite and a second floor mezzanine overlooking the waterfront. Bonifacio Tejedor, Vanderleelie & Associates, listing agent A lifelong Tampa native, Bonifacio began his real estate career in 2003 and specializes in luxury estate homes and waterfront real estate. He has worked in every aspect of the industry representing sellers, buyers and investors in both the residential and commercial Tampa Bay market.
It’s also interesting to note that Tampa Bay is gaining a good reputation for professional athletes who want to put down roots. “We have a lot of interest from professional ball players who don’t necessarily play for Tampa teams, but want a home here in the future,” says Tejedor. “A number of ball players have homes here and that entices other team members to consider coming here too—they like the idea of socializing and doing business with people they know. “ In addition to athletes, Dina Sierra Smith is also seeing interest from coaches and corporate CEOs, as well as business professionals relocating here for the job.
LOOKING FORWARD IN 2015 There is light at the end of the tunnel, say the Realtors. A more optimistic 2015 is on the horizon. Diane Swainston likes to use a sports analogy: “2013 was practice, 2014 was the warm up and 2015 is game time. “ In other words, she says, 2013 was a year of stabilization with more buyers and an absorption of inventory. 2014 saw an increase in activity in the luxury market with a slight uptick in prices overall and 2015 will be even better. Jennifer Zales says that both U.S. and international buyers will continue to see Tampa Bay as a good investment. It’s a region that offers tremendous value, she says. Sophia Vasilaros feels the same way: “I am very enthusiastic about 2015 and the potential our area presents to both move-up buyers as well as the high-net worth individuals who want to make Tampa Bay their choice for full or part time residency.” “I am optimistic that 2015 will continue on the upswing,” says Dianne Martin. “Buyers are starting to realize that if they are going to purchase, now is the time because home values are going up and this will continue. www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 55

Luxury homeowners incorporate unique touches into their interior and exterior designs.

One size does not fit all when it comes to residential design. Every homeowner has a unique wish list of home must-haves that they try hard to weave into their final new design plans. And those unique features are stretching farther and farther out of the realm of normalcy like never before. We spoke to the leaders in Tampa’s residentialdesign industry to find out what over-the-top client requests they’ve received and what trends they see in the Bay area.

Left: Windstar Homes gives homeowners the best of the best: closets for the fashionista, theatre rooms for the movie producer and wine cellars for the connoisseur. Above: One MLB super star outfitted his home with his very own diamond.
DAVID LESSER, WINDSTAR HOMES David Lesser, who along with Bobby Gross owns Windstar Homes, designs and builds one-of-a-kind masterpieces with an array of the finest products and technological advances available to builders today. Windstar Homes designs and builds custom homes ranging from 3,000 square feet. Lesser prides himself with being on the cutting edge of industry trends. “I love being able to be creative,” Lesser says. “And I love as these new products and technologies emerge, I get to explore and use these in cutting-edge projects. I also love to be able to push the design envelope and really design one-of-a-kind custom homes.” Windstar’s creations have included amenities like indoor/outdoor combination spaces, 3,000-bottle glass wine cellars, elaborate home gyms, secondary catering kitchens, producer-worthy home theatres, boutique-style closets that would melt any woman’s heart, incredible celebrity-approved swimming pools and more. Windstar is currently working on two Tampa homes sitting side-byside. The 23,000 square-foot home boasts 15 bathrooms and a whopping five kitchens, while the 28,000 square-foot home features an 18-car garage on the ground level with a conventional 3-car garage 74

at the motor court, which is located one level above. This home also features a 2,500 square-foot starlight balcony with a 360-degree view of the downtown skyline, an 8-person hot tub, a fireplace, putting green and bar. Phillies Shortstop Jimmy Rollins recently came to Lesser to add three levels on to his existing waterfront Windstar home. The ground level serves as his wife’s day spa, the next level is a VIP suite and the top level is a man cave like no other. Rollins’ five signed bases have been recessed into the floor with glass overtop for a one-of-a-kind flooring solution. Another favorite project? A client from a family of musicians requested a mini performing venue in the home, so Windstar built a large stage with a PA system for home concerts and performances, complete with rare memorabilia and musical instruments. “I love it,” Lesser gushes. “We are artists and we love pushing the envelope and creating innovative and distinctive features.”

they are quite excited about that will be very different. Alvarez’s favorite project was a small castle he designed and built during a four-year timeframe on Lake Thonotosassa. A 42,000 square feet under roof housed 26 bathrooms, a bowling alley, indoor and outdoor pools, an exercise area and more. “It was a really unusual project,” Alvarez explains. “The wood floors were reclaimed from France and we got different finishes from around the world. There was no rush so everyone got to have a lot of fun on that one.”

President Bobby Alvarez started Alvarez Homes in 1983 from a genuine love for design and construction, and he still carries that love through to all of his projects. Under his leadership, the Alvarez family of companies has built more than 450 luxury estates from Tampa to the Pinellas beaches, and Alvarez has fielded many client requests over the years. “We’ve done everything in the book,” Alvarez says. “We do highend custom homes so everyone’s different.” Alvarez is currently working on a waterfront home in Pass-a-Grille which will feature an infinity-edge pool on the second floor that looks out over the water as well as a round glass elevator. There is also a new home the company is getting ready to start on Snell Isle that

RICHARD MCGINNISS, MODERN TAMPA BAY HOMES President Richard McGinniss is dedicated to building modern homes for people with sophisticated, highly selective tastes. People who live in his homes value originality and distinctiveness, and McGinniss delivers every time. “We create exterior designs that stand out, yet still fit in,” McGinniss explains. A prime example of this unique blending is the 2,500-square-foot home McGinniss just finished in St. Petersburg’s historic Old Northeast neighborhood. Think of it as a luxurious high-rise penthouse situated on the ground floor. Homeowners get all the carefree living elements of the finest condo and all the luxury of a sprawling mansion without the upkeep and carbon footprint. 76

“It’s a jewel box,” McGinniss describes. “It’s a highly stylized, smaller condo-size home for the homeowner with discerning taste.” The home, furnished by Sarasota’s Home Resource, features state-of-the-art technology, allowing for complete access to your home from anywhere in the world within the palm of your hand, including lightning, security, door entries, temperature and more through a smartphone. Local artists designed the home’s artwork, and Spanish porcelain tile line the floors inside and out. High-end appliances, full glass backsplashes and a hidden powder room grace the kitchen.

DEL FRISCO’S GRILLE 4138 W. Boy Scout Boulevard | Tampa | 813-878-6890 | www.delfriscosgrille.com
In an area rich with steakhouses, another joined the crowd when Del Frisco’s Grille opened late-October in Tampa’s Westshore district, across from International Plaza. The Texas-based restaurant group knows its steaks, and is confident that they’ll make a name for themselves here, too. We chatted with the management team to find out what sets them apart from the other players in town. dRTB: There are Del Frisco’s Grilles in 16 cities throughout the U.S., including New York City, Boston and Dallas. Why bring the restaurant to Tampa? DFG: Tampa has become a destination in the travel and food scene. With only one other Grille in Florida, we were ready to expand into a very ripe market. Our location and its convenience to hotels, the airport and neighborhoods, is a perfect fit for our upscale casual concept. We have a loyal following from the Northeast and Midwest too, so for us, we wanted to be where are customers are, and make new loyal patrons fans as well. dRTB: Your Executive Chef Ben Bowman came over from Mitchell’s Fish Market. How instrumental was he in developing the menu in regards to the locally-inspired dishes? What are some of the menu items he created just for Tampa? DFG: Many items on a Del Frisco’s Grille menu are signature dishes to all our restaurants like the ahi tuna tacos and cheesesteak eggrolls, and, of course the signature USDA prime steaks. Chef Ben added to our menu the local Florida and Tampa fare with Cuban pulled pork empanadas served with an apricot mustard sauce; plantain crusted grouper with coconut rice, black bean sauce and pineapple chutney; blackened fish tacos; and a pressed Cuban sandwich served on a pretzel roll, also with apricot mustard. Del Frisco’s Grille kitchen operates as a scratch kitchen using the freshest local produce and ingredients. dRTB: What do you think guests’ favorites will be from the Tampa menu? DFG: Everything that Chef Ben created has been big hits so far, not to mention the traditional items found on all our menus. dRTB: The restaurant’s design is very open and inviting. Who did you work with on the concept? 82 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
DFG: Our architect is Florida-based, too: Glidden Spina + Partners out of West Palm Beach, a full-service architectural and interior design firm established in 1975. They also designed our West Palm Beach location, and their portfolio consists of a highly diversified list of many projects located in South Florida, and throughout the U.S. Raw Brussels Sprout Salad 4 ozs Brussels sprouts, leaves only 6 orange segments 1 oz Marcona almonds, crushed 1 oz dried cranberries ½ oz Manchego cheese, shredded 1 oz Creole Vinaigrette Creole Vinaigrette ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil ¼ cider vinegar 2 Tbsp Creole mustard, course ground 2 Tbsp fresh orange juice ½ tsp salt Vinaigrette: Place all ingredients in a small bowl and whisk to combine and distribute evenly. Let the vinaigrette sit at room temperature for one hour prior to use to let flavors marry and mellow out. Salad: Cut the ends off of the core of each individual Brussels sprout and peel back the leaves off the inside core. Place the leaves in a stainless-steel bowl and add the almonds, cranberries and orange segments. Toss with one ounce of the Creole vinaigrette and coat the ingredients; transfer the dressed salad onto a chilled salad plate. Shred the Manchego cheese over the top of the salad with a fine zester or cheese grater. Serves 1–2
VILLA BELLINI
2930 Gulf to Bay Boulevard | Clearwater | 727-754-9848 | www.villabellinirestaurant.com
Villa Bellini Restaurant & Lounge opened its doors this fall and has quickly become a favorite restaurant in Clearwater, bringing classic Italian dining to Pinellas County. In the kitchen is Chef Ciro Mancini, who was the mastermind behind Italian favorites such as the original Bellini Restaurant and Pensare Bistro & Bar, both in downtown Dunedin, and Casanova Restaurant in downtown Clearwater. We chatted with General Manager Kathy Wilson about the restaurant and what inspires Chef Ciro. dRTB: What Italian region most inspires Chef Ciro? KW: The Campania region in southern Italy is most inspiring, as its fertile soil provides bountiful amounts of food. Naples, which is within the region, is where Chef Ciro was born and raised, and so it is held closely to his heart. The small villages nestled in the region’s hills and valleys hold their own traditions, some of which Chef Ciro has brought to Villa Bellini. His unsurpassed talent for creating dishes that come alive with unique, wholesome flavors is the essence of his passion for cooking. dRTB: What is your philosophy when it comes to the menu? KW: Chef Ciro wants to bring the old world tradition-style of cooking to this new, faster world by creating a relaxed dining experience with family, good friends and wine. We use the freshest ingredients to create a culinary delight that is truly savored. “My artistry and inspiration as a chef is to provide you with an unforgettable meal that allows me to share my passion for cooking with you,” said Chef Ciro. “We’re proud to offer great authentic food, generous portions and a wonderful selection of menu options to choose from, more than any other Italian restaurant in Tampa Bay.” dRTB: What are the most popular items on the menu? KW: Over the few months since we’ve opened, we’ve seen our guests enjoying everything, but our most popular so far are our Ravioli Bellini (lobster ravioli), Parmigiana di Melenzane, Frittura di Mare (calamari, shrimp and polenta fried to a golden brown), Saccotini Ciro (pouchshaped pasta filled with ricotta cheese and black truffle served with a light cream sauce with mushrooms and pancetta), Carre d’Agnello (rack of lamb), Pappardelle Bolagnese, Salmone Asparagi and Filetto Gorgonzola (filet mignon with a creamy gorgonzola sauce).
Our menu is more than succulent pasta dishes served in generous portions—it also includes antipasti, bruschetta, salads and gelatos. We also have a full bar and an extensive wine list, the labels on which have been hand-picked by Chef Ciro, who is also a sommelier. dRTB: What if Chef Ciro’s favorite item on the menu? KW: Everything! But if he had to choose, it may just be Zuppa di Pesce—shrimp, sea scallops, fish, mussels, clams and calamari in a delicate seafood and cherry tomato-based broth. dRTB: What do you think distinguishes Villa Bellini from the other Italian restaurants in the area? KW: We provide a truly authentic, old-world Italian dining experience unlike any other restaurant. From the moment you walk through the solid oak cut glass doorway, you’ll feel like you’re at home. Our surroundings are very warm and comfortable and inviting, encouraging our guests to linger at the table, engaged in conversation with family and friends. The friendly, elegant and relaxed atmosphere and delicious dishes make for an authentic and unforgettable Italian dining experience. Veal Chop with Roman-Style Spinach Extra virgin olive oil 1 thick veal chop with bone Baby spinach Raisins Pine nuts Garlic Gorgonzola cheese (crumbled) Rosemary Sage Salt and pepper Marinate veal chop in extra virgin oil, garlic, rosemary and sage two hours before cooking. Place 2 tablespoons olive oil in large pan with a clove of garlic; add pine nuts. Toast pine nuts and add raisins. Quickly blanch spinach in a small pan with boiling water. Drain spinach and place in the pan with pine nuts and raisins. Stir until the flavors meld. Season with salt. Place the marinated veal chop on the grill, medium heat and cook until veal is lightly golden brown, about four minutes. Transfer the chop to a platter, cover partially with spinach and garnish with crumbled gorgonzola cheese and serve. Serves 1 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 83

AVA BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO ITALIAN CUISINE

There’s a new kid in town when it comes to Italian restaurants, and two names known in the area have its back—Joe Maddon, former manager of the Tampa Bay Rays, and Michael Stewart, owner of 717 South. We caught up with Stewart for a peek into the new restaurant on the South Tampa scene.

dRTB: The restaurant is Italian... what inspired you to go in that direction? MS: Honestly, we have great Italian food in Tampa. But, what I thought we needed most, was “an inspired Italian” concept, where rustic Italian meets simple, farm-to-table ingredients, using locally-sourced and seasonally-available foods. Most notably, we are not confined to the northern or southern regions, but rather whatever inspires us from throughout Italy. dRTB: Who is your chef? How did you find him? MS: We have two executive chefs, Joshua Hernandez and J Ward. I met Joshua when I was in LA and wound up at Bestia, one of the country’s best restaurants, on recommendation from the hotel concierge. One step inside and I was struck by how the vibe and décor was just what we were doing with AVA. Though the kitchen was extremely busy, I struck up a conversation with Joshua about the oven he was using, the same one we’d already custom-built in Naples, Italy, for AVA. It turns out that he’d been planning to move to Miami; he wound up just a bit north. J Ward is a familiar face on the local restaurant scene, having worked at several establishments in Tampa and St. Pete. Though they will have different roles in the kitchen, the two will still work together. I envision Joshua overseeing our pizzas and daily fresh pasta, while J will concentrate on our salads, proteins and desserts. 86 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
dRTB: What do you think the guests’ menu favorites will be? MS: Truly, all of it! There’s such a variety to choose from: our hand-rolled pastas, specialty, authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas, and the items we’ve discovered from all over Italy. I can see pizza and pastas on every table. JM: Everyone must try the pork belly. dRTB: What’s your favorite item on the menu? Joe’s? MS: My favorites include the Whole Roasted Cauliflower with Whipped Goat Cheese, the Fried Kale Salad and, for dessert, our Caramel Budino with a salted caramel sauce served with a rosemary cookie. JM: I’m partial to the Spaghetti con Cozze (with mussels, garlic and olive oil), and the tiramisu for dessert! dRTB: How extensive is your wine collection? MS: We are aiming to have 20 Italian wines by the glass on the menu, and 150 wines by the bottle, comprised mostly of Italian wines, but we have other wines from all over the world as well. We’ll also have a “secret list” with high-end and exclusive reserves. dRTB: How did you settle on the name AVA? MS: Ava is my daughter’s name, but the restaurant is pronounced a-vah. I like the play on my daughter’s name, and it sounds beautiful. AVA can also mean “breath of life,” and I believe we will be breathing
new life into what we do with our food and drinks, and overall energy of the restaurant. dRTB: Are there any specialty cocktails at AVA? MS: All of our cocktails are specialty, including one made with Prosecco, vodka, elderflower, grapefruit and lemon, and a Fresh Fig & Pear, as well as barrel-aged Negroni and an Italian-inspired sangria. dRTB: Who was your decorator? MS: Josh Charles from Flags of Origin, an Atlanta-based firm. They designed Optimist in Atlanta, which was named Best Restaurant by Esquire Magazine. dRTB: Joe recently left the Tampa Bay Rays to take the manager position with the Chicago Cubs. What will his involvement be with the restaurant? MS: Joe and his wife Jaye still call Tampa home, and Joe will stay just as involved with AVA as he has been. He’ll continue to be around throughout the year. With Stewart and Maddon at the helm, and Chefs Joshua and J in the kitchen, it’ll be no surprise when, in no time, AVA will be a Tampa Bayarea MVR—most valuable restaurant.
1 tbsp shallot, chopped 1 tbsp parsley, chopped 2 tbsps olive oil 1 tsp chili flakes 1/2 tsp fennel seed 1/4 cup dry white wine 1.5 lbs scrubbed manila clams kosher salt to taste Drop the pasta into a large pot of boiling water that has been salted so that it tastes like soup, but not as salty as the sea. The key is to taste your pasta water. In a saute pan, heat half the garlic, shallot, parsley, fennel seed, and chili flakes in half the olive oil over medium heat for 6 minutes. Be careful not to burn the garlic. Add the wine and raise the heat. Once the wine is boiling, add the clams and the rest of the garlic, shallots, chili flakes and parsley. Cover with a tight fitting lid. Give the pan a couple of shakes after you cover it. Cook until the clams have all opened. By this time, your pasta should be al dente. Strain the pasta (do not rinse!) and add it to your saute pan. Reduce the heat to medium and toss your pasta and clams energetically over the flame to release the starch from the spaghetti. Pull the pan off the heat and continue tossing as you add the last of the olive oil. The sauce should become thick and coat the noodles. Check the seasoning and add salt to taste. Divide between 2 plates and eat immediately.

CULINARY MASTERS

BAKING UP SUCCESS Meet Michael Ostrander, Chef and Owner of St. Pete Bakery and Michael’s Extraordinary Desserts & Baking Academy in St. Petersburg Nestled off 4th Street in St. Petersburg, Pastry Chef Michael Ostrander starts baking today’s sweetest treats in prep for a bustling hungry crowd followed by laying out the curriculum of a new class he plans to bring to his culinary school. Ostrander is the proud owner of two successful pastry businesses within one building: St Pete Bakery and Michael’s Extraordinary Desserts & Baking Academy. With more than 45 years of experience, Michael started his career baking at a vocational school in Middlesex, NJ. Then, he continued in the US Army for 10 years, teaching baking at the US Army Capital Foodservice Headquarters in Ft. Lee, VA, six years in Europe under VII Corp Headquarters Foodservice Team, and three years as NCO IC at the Ft. Dix, NJ baking school. Upon leaving the military, he went to Johnson & Wales Culinary School as a pastry educator. From there, Ostrander held various Executive Pastry Chef roles at many upscale hotels throughout the U.S. such as Orlando’s Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, the Beverly Hills Hilton and Miami’s Intercontinental Hotel. Ostrander has served as a pastry consultant in the Tampa Bay area for nearly 30 years, for top-notch establishments like Alessi Bakery, Pane Rustica and Datz. But it’s the teaching he’s doing now that he finds the most rewarding. “Over the years, I noticed a lack of quality within the baking and pastry industry,” Ostrander explains. “I had opened Sweet Caroline’s Bakery in Palm Harbor at the time, and some of the young folks coming to work just didn’t have the education they needed, and I got really excited to help them.” Ostrander opening up the bakery school in 2012 to offer full-time education to anyone interested in the industry, later selling Sweet Caroline’s Bakery to focus on education completely. But in 2014, Ostrander was ready to open something again, and thus, St. Pete Bakery, a quaint boutique-style shop filled with delicious pastries, cakes, ice cream and desserts all made from scratch, opened its doors. Ostrander’s personal recipes that he uses in the shop sometimes inspire his hands-on classes. These six-month sessions include sixhour days on such topics as The Perfect Pie, Summer Desserts, Gourmet Cookies, Gluten-Free Desserts, Breads, Cakes, Chocolate, and European and Italian pastries. 88 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
“When I sit down to develop a new course, I really think what I would want to learn from a class and how I can really make it interactive and fun … what would really leave the class satisfied,” Ostrander gushes. “I have 47 years of experience and I draw on that to develop out my courses.” Ostrander’s students have gone on to find great success following graduation. Five students have opened successful businesses and three have been accepted into the prestigious Culinary Institute of America to continue training. “I get calls at my house from students now making product in their own home,” Ostrander says. “And I hear the excitement in their voices. Classes give them a new confidence and that gets me excited.” Above everything, Ostrander’s love for the industry shines through. He believes knowledge is power, and he uses his class to instill that in others. “Knowledge is security,” Ostrander explains. “When you start looking at baking and pastry work as a science, once you understand the function of the ingredients, that insecurity goes away.”

DB9 VOLANTE
D
avid Brown was a savvy industrialist who bought Aston-Martin in 1947. Under his leadership they produced a timeless lineup of GT cars bearing his initials. From the DB2 in 1950 to the current DB9, they have been hand-built in the traditions of old world coachbuilding. Ford took control in the early 1990s and infused the brand with capital and new takes on engineering. A new factory was built at Gaydon in Warwickshire, and the first car to roll out was the DB9. Aston Martin has been reluctant to adopt mass production techniques, so each DB9 is assembled by hand to ensure the utmost in build quality. What this means for the driver is hand-stitched leather that flows into the door jambs, and a solid convertible free of the normal annoyances of top-down motoring. I have driven V12 powered cars, from Lamborghinis to Ferraris, which love to rev and make tons of power on the top end. Our friends at Dimmitt Aston-Martin told me that their new twelve cylinder is a different beast than the competition. It has 517 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque, but the impressive part is how thickly the torque arrives down low. The DB9 has a traditional automatic transmission that shifts with purpose, but none of the harshness of the dual-clutch units. While cruising it runs through the gears quickly to save fuel, making use of lower RPMs. In sport mode, the big V12 speaks with a baritone melody that is easily modulated by your right foot. Carbon ceramic brakes lead the list of standard content. They are just one example of how Aston Martin combines the latest in technology and the best materials to build the world¹s finest grand touring roadster. A big thanks to Dimmitt Aston Martin for this opportunity.

THE POWER OF THE ARTS
Rob Harris
Rob Harris
Meet Judy Lisi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tampa’s Straz Center
T
ampa’s Straz Center serves as a cultural crossroads, bringing new and established artists and top-notch productions to the Tampa Bay community, thanks in large part to Judy Lisi’s leadership since 1992. Lisi has an immense appreciation for the arts—she’s had roles as a performer, playwright and director herself—and she’s moved by the power it brings to children and adults alike. That’s why she’s quite proud of Straz’s award-winning outreach programs that take the arts to underserved school children and that Straz has the only accredited performing arts school in the region, the Patel Conservatory. We sat down with Lisi to hear about how Straz has transformed over the years, what she’s looking forward to seeing this holiday season and more.
When did you find a passion for children’s arts education?
“The first play I directed was South Pacific. I was teaching at a high school in Norwalk, Connecticut at the time. I was a young teacher and the school gave me the seasonal musical to run. All the children then were at different levels and ages, but that’s when I was really turned on to the power of the arts. I saw how the children left their differences at the door, and the play brought them together and created a bond. That’s when I saw that arts education can transform young people, and I went back to school to learn more. It was the experience that changed my life.”
Speaking about the power of the arts, what performances are you most looking forward to this season?
How has the Straz Center changed in your 22 years at the helm? “It has really grown. I really believe that people in my industry and in the arts community, we are all community builders. We started out with just three theatres and now we have five theatres, three restaurants and a major conservatory for the arts with 20 studios! We have to look at the master plan because we’ve already outgrown that space. Plus, Tampa’s downtown has really transformed with the Tampa Museum of Art and Glazer Children’s Museum. Now there’s residential living and a lot of interest in the arts. I like to think we were a catalyst for all of that activity. It’s been very exciting!”
You’ve directed more than 40 productions and written six plays. Which one do you love most? “I really like them both, and they’re both very different. I love writing but I’ve always written under deadline. The pressure to turn something in—because otherwise, what will the actors say—has always been unbelievable, but it’s a great process. My favorite play to write was, Waist Watchers, and it was really very fun. But I also love to direct, because that’s when you get to work with the entire ensemble and everything just comes to life. I’ve also performed as well. My career in the arts has really touched everything so I’m very blessed.”
“Well, that’s a loaded question because there are so many! I should start by mentioning the biggest one: the all-new Phantom of the Opera (December 17–January 4) from producer Cameron Mackintosh. We are all very excited about it. We also have Dirty Dancing, (December 2–December 7) which just finished up a tour in London and that’s going to be a lot of fun. And the Opera Festival will be amazing (February 7). It’s the 20-year anniversary and we are going to have world-renowned baritone Sherrill Milnes.”
What a great lineup! What do you think people would be surprised to learn about the Straz Center? “I don’t think people know that we are a charity. They see these huge Broadway shows and amazing performances coming to the stage, and they don’t know we are a non-profit. We couldn’t do what we do in the community without the amazing generosity of our community members. We are also the only performing arts center with a community conservatory attached. Our students get to see the best performances and learn from the best, and we are seeing those students go on to win major awards and also see success in the arts industry. We also have a lot of outreach programs that bring art education to our young folks who might not get that otherwise.”
Any behind-the-scenes stories you can share? “Jerry Seinfeld has been here many times, and one time a few years ago, I saw him before his show. He said, ‘Judy, can you take me to the big stage, because when I came here the first time, I was on the small stage. Then, I made it to the second stage. And now, I’ve made it to the big hall.’ I always thought it was so sweet that such a big celebrity was so honored to make it to our big stage.”

Tampa Fire Station 6
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Tampa Fire Chief Tom Forward officially reopened the newly–renovated firehouse, Tampa Fire Station 6 (also called the “Beach House”) during a ceremony December 9th. The mayor recognized the efforts of the 13 Ugly Men Foundation and numerous community partners who donated their time, money, and materials to complete the renovation of the 100–year-old fire station, Tampa’s oldest. “A 100-year-old firehouse needs to be more than functional for crews working here today; it needs to be a tribute to all the men and women who have served our community out of this station and would have given their lives to keep our community safe. That’s what the 13 Ugly Men Foundation and their community partners have created,” said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn. “We are a city who takes care of the men and women who take care of us.” The 13 Ugly Men Foundation enlisted the support of 75 businesses and individuals, who raised more than $300,000 to complete the project. “We were excited to take on this project. We have some phenomenal community partners who understand the value of our first responders and this was a chance to not only give back to the men and women who protect our city, but to be a part of maintaining Tampa’s rich history,” said Donnie Nurnberger, who led the organizing committee which included Jack Glasure, CEO of Ignition Branding, retired Tampa Fire Rescue Special Operations Chief Emilio Salbarria; Erick Miller of Studio M Design; and Sal Kass of Ports of America. Retired Captain Mike Morris was assigned to Station 6 in the 1970s and said he was happy with what the community partners achieved with the renovation. “I think it’s wonderful, because if you don’t know where you came from, you don’t know where you’re going.”
