From The Publisher July/August 2017

Dear Reader, Wow! These are exciting times. This issue is packed with interesting editorials that are supported by a larger group of duPont REGISTRYTM MEDIA partners that are also members of our Luxury Lifestyle Directory. That’s right, it’s our Annual Lifestyle Directory listing our fabulous media partners that are the very best purveyors of the luxury lifestyle in Tampa Bay. Just check out the list on pages 71 through 73 and look in this issue and on the internet for the current partners, and for ALL of our lifestyle partners. Speaking of the internet, as soon as you have read (looked at) every single page in this issue, be sure to review all the current information, stories and ads on our website: www.dupontregistrytampabay.com. Our social media engineers have increased traffic over 50% since April and projections are to go even bigger in the next 30 days. Our volume of unique visits is still not where it needs to be, but just watch us. After all, we aren’t after millions of eyeballs, we are after eyeballs with millions! Back to the book. There are some great travel stories and a terrific review of the Middle Grounds Grill -- a great spot for a summer evening dinner out in a great location. Our Health & Wellness editor has provided guidance for you regarding “Meditation and Mindset”, and further information on how you can stay well on your own with the disclosure of products used by the Delos Stay Well organization. Featured in this issue and noted on the cover are our two special articles. The first is the Guide to Neighborhood Coffee Shops featuring some of the best baristas in the Bay Area. Be sure to stop by for a quick pick-me-up or schedule a meeting at any of these coffee shop partners, and tell them you heard about them here! Next is our Top Beachfront Homes. This article showcases some of the very best beachfront residences along the Pinellas Coast. It is hot this time of year all along the beach and so is this special luxurious (and expensive) marketplace. Each of these homes is a truly unique experience with amenities and, of course, a view to suit the most refined tastes. Top Beachfront Homes pages 39 through 46. Need a get-a-way, but don’t want to go too far? Look at these spots: Hammock Beach Resort, Palm Coast and the new Playa Largo Resort and Spa, Key Largo. Try traveling there in a Buick Lacrosse! Maybe you just want to stay home -- a little “staycation”? Improve the homestead with our home trends and must-haves: cabinets, grills, and furnishings. Or, go to Pub Picks to find personal accessories and gadgets for your personal lifestyle from Petal and Vine. See, I told you it was packed! It’s the best we can do for now. So, move to the beach, have a cup of joe, Stay Well and on and on… until next month. Happy & Healthy,

Thomas L. duPont Publisher/Chairman

P.S. You all know that automobiles are part of the luxury lifestyle. We have included our dR Autos feature this issue to acquaint you with the best in speed and comfort (luxury lifestyles -- get it?) If you want to see all kinds of classic, luxury and exotic cars, save Saturday, September 16th when duPont REGISTRYTM Cars & Coffee moves to the Peter O’Knight airport on Davis Islands. Last year 1,200 cars caught us off guard. This year, we will be ready. 7:00-10:00 am -- Rise and Shine!

The Evolution of Tiffany and Co.

“We want to focus on being consumer-centric and deliver the best service experience possible.”

By: Mary Lou Jansen

uch like the iconic brand’s signature blue box that is kept hidden until moments before being presented to mark a milestone, herald a holiday or celebrate a special occasion, the new location of Tampa’s Tiffany & Co. store was masked for months until it was time for it to shine. One of the original tenants International Plaza introduced to the Tampa Bay area in 2001, the Tiffany & Co. store is still part of that high-end retail venue, but it recently relocated to a more central, and highly visible, 4,110-square-foot site that places it within view of the volumes of shoppers who visit daily. The big reveal happened on July 11 when the doors to the newest Tiffany & Co. store opened to the public, affording the first glimpse of a dazzling decor created exclusively for the firm recognized as the world’s premier jeweler and America’s house of design. A broader color palette, elaborate light fixtures and more intimate salon-like spaces now greet guests. Displaced is the former traditional approach to retail, replaced by a more contemporary look and layout. “The major redesign we’ve made to our store provides our clients with the most up-to-date reflection of the House of Tiffany, offering our renowned product quality, craftsmanship and style in a beautiful new environment,” according to Alexandra Winokur, vice president of Tiffany & Co. Defined by three specialty areas identified as Fine Jewelry, Fashion and Private Sales, the new store also allows Tiffany to showcase more of its high quality, handcrafted products than before. The inviting interior combines clean lines with a simplified design that incorporates a more balanced sense of symmetry and proportion. Luxurious materials found throughout on floors, walls and ceilings include marble, cerused walnut paneling and crystal chandeliers. Curved glass counters create a more intimate, personalized customer service experience. Plush chairs and couches upholstered in shades of pale and peacock blue combine comfort and flair. And the entrance’s granite façade pays homage to the Fifth Avenue flagship Tiffany & Co. store. “It made sense for us to evolve our store and to be where there is more visibility and exposure within International Plaza. This store has a fresh look that feels bigger, brighter and grander. It is a modern prototype store for us,” said Jonathan Bruckner, Southeast market vice president of Tiffany & Co. and the first director of the original Tampa Tiffany & Co. store. “When you see the new features and brand elements that are woven into the design and the way the consumer navigates through the store, it is quite impressive.”

From its humble start as a “stationery and fancy goods” store that opened in New York in 1837, Tiffany & Co. has remained dedicated to designing, and defining, an American style that embraces simplicity, harmony and clarity. Its designers routinely draw inspiration from nature while using precious metals and gemstones sourced from nature to create accessories that are timeless and timely. In addition to developing a stunning new retail showcase for its stylish jewelry, watches and more, the brand strives to enhance that personal interaction and connection it cultivates with its valued clientele. “We want to focus on being consumer-centric and deliver the best service experience possible,” Bruckner added. The evolution of the shopping experience is just one example of how the company ranks as the world’s premier jeweler. Innovation has been an integral part of its identity as well. Consider the namesake Tiffany® Setting introduced in 1886 that redefined how engagement ring diamonds are mounted, elevating the stones above the band rather then setting them in bezels flush with the band. Currently celebrating its 130th anniversary, that re-imagining remains the standard among today’s romantics, making it a popular setting of choice for engagement rings. There’s been considerable outside-of-the-blue-box corporate thinking over the years that has helped this long-standing, global brand continue to remain elegant and relevant while creating popular lines of cutting-edge designs for its proprietary collections. May marked the debut of the newest design line, the Tiffany HardWear fashion gold collection that is personified by none other than Lady Gaga, a superstar singer, songwriter and actress who became the latest famous face in Tiffany’s Legendary Style campaign. Images of Lady Gaga filmed against a Tiffany Blue® backdrop introduced the “fiercely feminine and fearlessly authentic” pieces in a print advertising campaign and a spot that aired during the worldwide broadcast of Super Bowl LI. In addition to HardWear’s bold bracelets, earrings and necklaces, the new Tampa store also features jewels with rare colored diamonds, like the Tiffany Yellow Diamonds, plus the latest interpretations of signature collections, Tiffany T, Tiffany Victoria™, Tiffany Bow and Tiffany Infinity. “I love Tiffany HardWear because it’s different and elegant—but it’s not what you would expect of elegance. That’s like me I think— I’m a bit different,” Lady Gaga says during the 60-second promotion. “To me, Tiffany is definitive and iconic, yet continues to push and evolve with the times.” G

Meditation and Mindset as Medicine

www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

By: Sharon Fekete, Health and Wellness Editor t is serendipitous to now engage our readers about what is known as ‘lifestyle medicine’ in our luxury lifestyle edition. This concept is revolutionizing our healthcare system and certainly holds a place in the future hub of the first certified wellness district in the country, Tampa Bay. This scientific approach to decreasing disease risk and illness by implementing nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, rest, meditation and mindset is a breath of fresh air.

I

duPont REGISTRYTM sat down with Chitra Prasad-Patel, Co-Founder of Evolve Personal Health, about the benefits of lifestyle medicine. Health is not just about the physical; it is also a combination of internal and external factors. Embracing happiness and encouraging a healthy mindset is a huge component for leading longer and healthier lives. As current research on brain structures indicates, mindfulness is an important tool in improving well-being. Furthermore, perhaps the most effective vehicle to reach mindfulness is meditation. The brain can be changed by conscious thoughts and actions, also known as neuroplasticity. Meditation can reverse the adverse effects of injuries, damage, or patterns created by trauma. At Evolve Personal Health, we address conditions through behaviors from a lifestyle medicine perspective. Variables such as how negative or positive a person behaves, eating habits, and levels of physical activity are all taken into consideration. These behaviors can be transferred into practical prescriptions to improve your life. For example, to improve hypertension we know that meditation can be the best avenue to pursue, as it will alleviate stress. Reducing stress is the first step in becoming healthier, stronger, and happier. There is a direct correlation between a healthy brain and the practice of meditation. This practice is nondenominational, and transcends through all socioeconomic, educational, and cultural backgrounds. In order to understand a person’s purpose, introspective questions will be asked about why he/she is here and what they want to achieve. Through practices of meditation, yoga and breathing techniques we can reflect and gain clarity on these narratives. In a traditional medical practice, we are not always offered practical alternative methods to reduce stress. In order to gain maximum benefit from services provided at Evolve Personal Health, knowing your goals is crucial on your journey to be better. Introspective conversations to work toward reversing health conditions will require an open mind, patience and commitment. Meditation and mindfulness is the foundation of the practice. Everything we do incorporates healthy and mindful

initiatives vs. taking a pill to reduce anxiety and/or stress. Tampa Bay is a forward thinking health conscious area. We are prime to become the first wellness district in the country. This innovative program would not work in other places; Tampa Bay is pioneering the way to preventative care. It is obvious that the community has a progressive understanding of health. Consider the amount of boutique fitness studios and different types of yoga options for people. A program such as this could only work in a progressively minded area such as ours, where collaboration and integration among experts of medicine and mindfulness intersect. Evolve represents what medicine should be, reflecting kindness, compassion and openness in combining alternative and traditional methods to gain overall wellness. The space is serene in every sense of the word and infused with contagious energy. On a personal note, when my father was informed he had a weak heart recently and mom recognized her nutritional habits could improve, they were encouraged to join Evolve. I am proud to say they are now both on a healthy regimen to actively improve and extend their remaining years of life. I have also slowly incorporated meditation into my entrepreneurial lifestyle thanks to this team of experts. It has certainly proven beneficial when faced with a need to gain clarity and tap into creativity. G

Jackson Orthodontics Provides Superior Treatment his summer, I had the pleasure of interning at Jackson Orthodontics, and my experience was nothing short of wonderful. The day I began, the staff had a warm and welcoming demeanor that I have since seen with patients time and time again. The doctor is no exception, always taking a few minutes to catch up with each person prior to his or her appointment. As my time at the practice went on, I began to see how every employee is fun-loving and laidback. It is not uncommon to see the assistants making jokes with the patients, or Dr. Jackson dancing to Bruno Mars as he is moving from chair to chair. As a result, patients are at ease in this relaxing environment, whether it be in Jackson Orthodontics' Largo location or the office in St. Petersburg. When it comes to patient care, the doctor and his staff are simply outstanding. From reception to chair-side, I've seen that everyone at Jackson Orthodontics is experienced and dedicated to providing proper treatment to all of their patients. Together, the staff demonstrates superior service in that they discuss treatment options in-depth with patients prior to moving forward with a plan, conduct appointments on-time and ensure that patients always remain comfortable, especially when working with children. As an intern, I have been able to witness firsthand how pleased patients are with the service they receive at Jackson Orthodontics, whether they come in for an initial consultation, or have been seeing "Dr. J" for years. Between poking fun, diligently working and discussing new ideas there is no doubt the team at Jackson Orthodontics has an excellent dynamic. By way of this opportunity, I can confidently say Jackson Orthodontics is an excellent choice for patients who are looking for high quality orthodontic treatment. It has become clear to me that practicing orthodontics is not just a job for Dr. Jackson, but a passion. Anyone who knows the doctor can testify that he will do what he can to help each patient achieve a better smile.

How to “Live & Stay Well” Beyond Travel

By: Sharon Fekete, Health and Wellness Editor

I

“I believe the time we spend indoors should sustain and improve our well-being”...

n the last issue, I covered how to “Stay Well” during travel and now I want you to know how to LIVE and STAY well AFTER you travel.

While staying at the Tampa Waterside Marriott last September I was exposed to the incredible features Stay Well has to offer. One of my favorite features is the Stay Well Shower Infuser – this system neutralizes the effects of chlorine, known to dry the skin and hair. In fact, I loved this feature so much I put it on my Christmas list and my hubby installed it in my own bathroom! These well-infused lifestyle features are easy to incorporate into our own homes. The ascents Diffuser, delivers the benefits of aromatherapy without the harmful substances found in synthetic oils and artificially scented candles. Simply plug in the unit and choose your mood; calm, sleepy, focused or MY favorite, ENERGIZED! The air we breathe in our homes is vital in achieving true wellness. Studies show on average that we spend 90 percent of our time indoors. It is proven that our internal dwellings project where air quality is two to five times worse than the air quality outside. The Edition Rabbit Air Minus A2 Ultra Quiet Air Purifier is a great product that can significantly improve internal air quality. This device offers a six-stage filtration system scientifically designed to tackle every major pollutant category – dust, fine particulates, mold, pollen, dander and volatile organic compounds. If you are as serious about your sleep as I am, the Stay Well memory foam mattress is a must have! For a former NYer perspective, it’s PERFECT because I need to stay cool while I sleep. This natural latex memory foam quickly adjusts to your body and helps create a better sleep environment. Pair this mattress with the Philips Wake-up Light and you will wake up refreshed to circadian lighting and natural sounds. Incorporating holistic wellness into our lives is easier than ever, and it’s affordable. There is no need to tear down your house and build a new environmentally eco-conscious home. These products can be found at The Stay Well Shop, and are powered by Delos. duPont RegistryTM spoke with Paul Scialla, Founder, CEO of Delos“I believe the time we spend indoors should sustain and improve our wellbeing, not harm it. Hence, why we have also created The Stay Well Shop, to provide alternatives to the current environment.” G

oday’s luxury homes boast a bevy of amenities – where warmth and style meet technology and artful design. With more people spending time at home and entertaining, smart tech appliances are transforming the ordinary into an extraordinary experience in every room of the home. Color plays a role in setting the mood too, with designers gravitating toward using natural or reclaimed wood, rich with texture and opting for warmer palettes with matte black, grays and white, over sterile environments outfitted with stainless steel and chrome. Brushed gold and brushed brass are the new gem tones, symbolizing warmth. “Everything is going earthy, organic and warm,” says Nancy Braamse, owner of Old World Cabinetry. “I love that real wood is coming back. If you find the right wood grain, it’s like art and looks gorgeous.” Savvy consumers are also demanding smart technology that accommodates their hectic lifestyles and manufacturers are responding with appliances that can both improve a person’s health and create balance. We asked a few of Tampa Bay’s top designers and curators of luxury living to reveal some gadgets and must-have features that are shaping our spaces. A well-appointed kitchen remains the centerpiece of the home, where conversations, creating memorable moments and entertaining happen. Gourmet kitchens are viewed as a status symbol, conveying a certain look and feel that permeates throughout the home. “People are looking for that pro experience in their kitchen – both inside the home and outside,” explains Jennifer Hettich, Showroom Manager with Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in Tampa. “We call that the ‘approachable pro style,’ using products that make them feel like a chef and bringing those experiences to their families.” Hettich credits the growing popularity of “The Food Network” and “HGTV” with giving homeowners the inspiration and confidence to transform their kitchens into a luxurious oasis. Demand for smart technology throughout the home has increased with more appliances mimicking the functions on our phones. Swipe, click, point – one-touch controls can turn on the oven while driving home from work or remotely check the temperature of the meat on the grill so you can spend more time with family. “Our lives are technology driven, so it’s a natural progression for appliances to have these capabilities too,” says Hettich. She adds that these devices also provide diagnostic updates to save time and money on repairs, and manufacturers can push out updates, allowing consumers to keep the same product without upgrading every few years. Wellness is a sizeable consideration when choosing kitchen appliances, with alternative methods such as steam ovens becoming popular. Steam ovens that allow food to cook faster but still retain its flavor and nutrients, function both as a convection and conventional oven, browning meats and cooking grains such as quinoa and rice. Induction cooking is also popular and armed with Wi-Fi technology, so cooks can master the art of controlling temperatures with a swipe of their phone. Continued on page 34.

dR Home Unsure how to cook your favorite dish? Hettich says the Jenn-Air appliance line that offers a pre-set chef center with recipes is a musthave. People can choose their meal, and the system will ask how you want the dish cooked, the size of the pan, and display photographs of the entree at varying stages of cooking. For summer kitchen aficionados, Ferguson carries the Lynx Grill system that allows users to ask how to cook a dish, say scallops, and the embedded guide walks them through the preparation and cooking process to achieve perfect results. Cleaner lines and two islands in the kitchen are mainstays, and Braasme sees more people choosing natural wood or textured melamine that simulates wood – without the added expense or maintenance required. Antimicrobial technology is an added benefit, ideal for homes with small children. Interior kitchens and living room space are extending outdoors, with homeowners transforming patios into posh summer kitchens and entertaining spaces. Outdoor-rated appliances and adorning the spaces with encapsulated palmer cabinets give a polished look, says Hollie Driscoll with Just Grillin in Tampa, a family-run, designbuild firm that was started over 14 years ago by her parents, Doug and Heather. “The outdoor area is a place where people can entertain as a second home. We see clients investing in outdoor televisions, speakers, cabanas, and lights,” Driscoll says. She sees bar areas built with the same height overhang to allow for more entertaining space and includes a beverage center with ice makers that produce clear ice, a sink, grill and trash area. Accessories like side burners, woks, and griddles outside avoid any messy cleanup inside. And technology has a place too, says Driscoll, with the Wi-Fi compatible Flame Boss that remotely monitors the temperature of meat on the grill. The company carries the popular Alfresco Grill line that allows users to convert from gas to a solid fuel line and outdoor grills that can cook the perfect pizza and be used to smoke turkeys or hams inside during the holiday season. For people who may not know how to operate their new technology-driven summer kitchen, a member of the Just Grillin team will come to a client’s home to show them how to use the new kitchen. Technology and convenience also extend into the bathroom with more people opting to install under-the-counter refrigerators or beverage centers. Whether you need to get a bottle for a baby’s middle-of-the-night feeding or want to enjoy a cold glass of juice, master morning bars are a fixture in luxury homes. Today's bathrooms don't need an engineering degree to operate, so creating a spa-like setting is as easy as pushing a button. Armed with Wi-Fi connectivity, you can use your phone to pre-set the shower temperature, sound systems, lighting and time when you want to turn on the water in the morning or relax at the end of a long day.

A Weekend at Playa Largo Resort & Spa Unlock Lifelong Family Memories

www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

By: Megan Padilla y daughter’s birthday wish was to snorkel on a coral reef. So far, she’d spent a year with her gear in a swimming pool and she was ready to celebrate turning eight. I almost offered a bowling party instead, but in truth I was astonished by her bravery and curiosity and wanted, more than anything, to deliver this experience. Imagine my delight when my family of three was invited by Buick to take a road-trip to the Florida Keys, one week before her birthday. We’d fly to Miami then drive the 2017 Buick LaCrosse to Playa Largo Resort & Spa, an Autograph Collection hotel that opened last year in Key Largo. It’s the first new luxury hotel to have been built in the Upper Keys in more than 20 years and has been high on my list to visit. But here’s the clincher: Guess what else is in Key Largo? John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater park in the country and a well-known site to access Florida’s only coral reef. I call that winning. Right out of the airport, we settled into Buick’s answer to approachable luxury: We’re talking luxe leather interior, cooling seats (perfect for a drive to the Keys!), a spacious cabin plus a trunk larger than the rear of my SUV, wi-fi and the Apple Car Play app that connects my iPhone to the console so we can listen to our own music. The LaCrosse is silent too, as though we’re in our own relaxation room at a spa. Our getaway had truly begun! Akin to that feeling when you throw open the door to your hotel room, drop your bags and take in the décor, the view, the mini-bar and the soaking tub and think to yourself, “Ahh, now I can relax.” Except this time, that began in the car. We reached Playa Largo in an hour – so quickly, that I’d pouted about wishing we were driving all the way to Key West. But the valet smoothed my ruffled feathers by replacing my car keys with a tropical cocktail and a front desk representative whisked us inside to check in. Moments later we were overlooking the zero-entry pool and those gorgeous turquoise bands that define the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Yes, we’d arrived on an island, but one that didn’t require a passport or jockeying for overhead bin space. Highly recommended. The resort’s 177 rooms and suites are situated in four three-story towers in a garden setting, bookended by two classic Florida Keysstyle waterfront structures. On one end is the elevated, high-beamed and open-air bar and restaurant called Sol by the Sea, on the other is the private Beach House with wrap-around balconies and a waterfront pool. Across the entire length of the resort is a long ribbon of white-sand dotted with sleek hammock pods, groupings of chaise loungers and Adirondack chairs placed in the shade of sea grape trees. Bathing-suited bodies sprawl on blue mattresses afloat in the blue-green water of Florida Bay. Continued page 62.

dR Travel Instead of staying in the main hotel, we were in one of Playa Largo’s ten two-story bungalows, which together with a private waterfront beach house serve as a hotel-within-a-hotel called The Hammocks, serviced with a dedicated concierge. The Hammocks are secluded enough for privacy but positioned for guests to easily access all of the resort’s amenities including the bay-front pool, four restaurants and bars, spa, fitness center, tennis courts, water sports and the man-made beach. Each bungalow is off a cobbled path and has a jaunty Caribbean name and pastel color. Ours was named Key Lime and colored a shade of sunshine. A metal roof and slatted Bahamas shutters completed the island look. There’s a patio off the downstairs living room and a balcony off the upstairs master, but the only view are the tropical plants that provide some privacy, and some bright green iguanas scurrying in the brush. At the end of the pathway is the 3-bedroom, 4-bath, nearly 5,000square-foot Beach House, which is fully ADA compliant with a wheelchair ramp, an elevator to the second floor, an oversized master bathroom and a lift in the private swimming pool. Buick took up residence and used the house to entertain, hosting a poolside cocktail party that coincided with a spectacular sunset (the waiters explained the resort’s sunset bell which was easy to hear from the Beach House) where, for once, everyone saw the fabled “green flash.” Over dinner, I finally had a chance to talk more with Joe Muraglia, Buick communications manager and host of our road-trip wellness weekend. “One area people don’t always consider when building a holistic, balanced life is their car,” he said. He made a good point. “We put all this effort into our wellbeing: eating right, exercising, mindfulness and balance, yet people don’t often consider their car, the place where we spend so much time. How can a car help serve that unmet need?” said LaMuraglia. The weekend unfolded with sun salutations on the dock and a wonderfully effective relaxation massage at the spa. My daughter squeezed in one last practice snorkel-session in the zero-entry resort pool before our afternoon boat trip. Our host secured for us a private charter via Caribbean Watersports at Playa Largo Resort. Captain Dan took us on a 3-hour tour that was more than a ride to the reef. We cruised through Port Largo Canal, a man-made cut across Key Largo that connects Florida Bay on the west side to the Atlantic Ocean on the east. Its walls are a fascinating geology lesson, exposing millions-of-yearsold coral limestone that was once beneath the sea. We emerged into a mangrove forest whose curvy waterways I could have happily ridden through for hours. Once we hit the open water though, Captain Dan opened the throttle, quickly closing the gap to our destination, Grecian Rocks, a protected marine sanctuary that is part of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Masks defogged, fins donned, snorkels secured in our mouths,

the three of us plopped into the water. My daughter’s hand darted for her dad’s and I saw a moment of panic wash over, and then right past her. She settled into the calm, captivated by this underwater world revealed to her for the very first time. We saw lime green coral and purple sea fans waving in the current, along with hermit crabs and conch, brightly colored parrotfish, spiny sea urchins, electric blue damselfish, menacing-looking barracuda and the super-cute boxfish with its puckered lips and whirring propeller dorsal fins. When she tired, we made our way back to the boat, face in the water to not miss the toothy barracuda on the way. She climbed that ladder so triumphantly and chattered happily about everything she’d seen. The next day, as we drove back to the airport – sunroof open – a blur of blue sky, turquoise water, green mangroves as we passed through, a determined voice announced from the backseat, “I want to live somewhere we can snorkel everyday.”G

Close enough for a couple’s weekend retreat, a splurge with girlfriends or a last-minute summer vacation with the kids. Although Palm Coast is one of Florida’s newest cities, every effort has been made to preserve the old Florida feel with towering oak and pine trees. The local St. Joe Walkway and Linear Park is designated one of the Great Florida Birding & Wildlife Trails.

Full-Service Fun A Salamander Golf & Spa Resort, Hammock Beach Resort was recently renovated to deliver a four-star experience for guests. In addition to all-suite accommodations, guests can enjoy play time at two championship golf courses, a full-service spa and fitness center, an enormous water park complex, tennis center, marina and multiple onsite restaurants. In 2016, Golfweek Magazine gave both of the resort’s golf courses high acclaim, naming them to the magazine’s list of “Best Resort Courses” and “Best State-by-State Courses You Can Play.” The 7,201-yard Jack Nicklaus-designed “Ocean Course” has a number of challenging features and boasts six holes with extraordinary views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The 7,776-yard Tom Watson-designed Conservatory is considered one of the toughest courses in Florida with its combination of manicured greens and bunkered dunes, along with a few pot bunkers to get the adrenaline pumping. For those who prefer tennis, The Tennis Center at Hammock Beach Resort features eight lighted Hydro-Grid clay courts overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. Take your game to the next level with private or group lessons, as well as daily clinics and even a cardio-tennis class. Water Play The spa and fitness center, marina and pool complex/water park are equally impressive. Enjoy a signature massage with hot stones and aromatherapy at the resort’s top-rated spa, then relax outside in a hammock set up in the shade of a private cabana. Save time for yoga or a spin class at the fitness center, which offers the latest cardio and weight training equipment, as well as an on-site professional wellness coordinator. Spend the morning walking the beach and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean currents. Then have lunch and a cocktail at the pool in the afternoon. The resort’s 91,000-square-foot multi-level water pavilion complex rivals theme parks but without the crowds. Take your pick of an adults-only pool, a zero-entry beach pool and water activities like plunging down the water slide or floating along the lazy river. There’s even an indoor pool with lap lanes and a spa garden area. Nearby, you’ll find The Marina at Hammock Beach Resort, where boaters can reserve a slip for the day or week. Guests can also book

Trainer For The Day Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Photos courtesy of Abigail Cook

68

www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

By: Cassie Kennedy, Junior Contributor he Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a rescue and rehabilitation facility for all species of aquatic life, providing shelter for animals that would be unable to survive outside of captivity. From African White Pelicans, to River Otters and, of course, dolphins --- the Clearwater Marine Aquarium has saved countless lives. The aquarium aims to educate the public through programs such as “Trainer for a Day”. Just last week, I was honored to be a part of this program and learned what it really takes to work at the aquarium. I learned it is very important to monitor dolphins’ breathing at least once every hour. This only takes about five minutes, and is a fairly simple task. Each time the dolphin emerges from the water and takes a breath, it must be noted. This is imperative because dolphins tend to hide their illnesses, and oftentimes trainers don’t realize they’re sick until it’s too late. Normal breathing is between five and twenty breaths per session. During this session, I helped monitor Nicholas, one of the resident dolphins. He took ten breaths in the five minutes I observed him, which is within the normal range. I was then tasked with measuring the amount of fish each animal would receive later that day. Different species have different feeding requirements, so all the fish must be weighed out prior to feeding. The animal care specialists must ensure the fish are not damaged. The bucket used to measure the weight of the fish must then be scrubbed and sanitized thoroughly to remove any scales that may have fallen. Upon inspection from the Health Department, if any scales were found the aquarium would immediately be shut down, so this chore is of extreme importance. I worked with Ricky the Pelican, famous for his role as “Rufus” in the movie Dolphin Tale. After being moved to his new enclosure, two of the aquarium’s expert trainers worked with him on a few exercise behaviors. These behaviors included flying from one side of the enclosure to the other, as well as from one trainer to the other. I was asked to reward Ricky with a delicious fish, and although his long bill looked a bit intimidating, it actually feels very similar to newspaper! I also got to work with an adorable North American River Otter named Walle. I learned that river otters like Walle are found throughout North America in rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. They are very inquisitive, and often appear to take a childlike enjoyment in sliding around on muddy banks. In the wild, river otters regularly consume fish, frogs and crayfish. Since Walle lives in captivity, he also enjoys eating Jello! I got to observe Walle playing with bubbles as his enrichment activity. This is yet another example of the otter’s playful nature. My favorite training experience of the day was my session with Hope the Dolphin. Hope’s trainer asked her for numerous

T

behaviors, which included waving with her fin, swimming on her back, displaying her tail fin and jumping out of the water. Any time Hope would perform a behavior correctly, her trainer would blow the whistle and give her a treat. The whistle is used as a bridge, to help the trainer tell Hope when she has performed a behavior correctly. If Hope performs a behavior incorrectly, the trainer does not blow the whistle and no reward is given. This is positive reinforcement, which trainers at Clearwater Marine Aquarium apply to all of their animals. Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s primary mission is always to rescue, rehabilitate and release. However, if animals for any reason cannot be released back into the wild they will always have a home at the aquarium. Since Hope was found when she was very young, she has become one of the permanent residents of the aquarium. Although children as young as ten may become a Trainer for a Day, I believe that no matter how old a person is, anyone can appreciate and learn from this amazing experience. I, for one, am eighteen years old and had a “whale of a good time!” The Clearwater Marine Aquarium was established in 1972 and has been saving animals in need ever since. You can support them by volunteering or adopting an animal. G

By: Eric Kennedy ake a drive on Gulf Boulevard, and whether you’re heading north or south you’ll find yourself on Treasure Island, home to a local favorite for fresh seafood, steaks and signature entrees. We took some time to catch up with the Middle Grounds Grill Executive Chef, Justin Cotton to find what inspires his cooking, and focus on one of the signature entrees Middle Grounds Grill is best known for, their Three Nut Crusted Grouper. The name “Middle Grounds Grill” was inspired by the famous Florida Middle Grounds, located approximately 100 miles off the Treasure Island coast; world-class angling destination that is known for its abundance of fish. Middle Grounds Grill prides itself on providing diners with only the finest, fresh catches the sea has to offer. The restaurant menu speaks for itself. Arrive hungry and you can start with appetizers like their Seared Tuna Sashimi, prepared with sesame seared yellowfin tuna, soy dipping sauce, pickled ginger, cusabi aioli, sriracha sauce and wakame seaweed salad. There is also a Smoked Fish Spread, Lemon Infused Crab Cakes and Coconut Almond Crusted Shrimp just to name a few of the scrumptious appetizers. The menu includes: Certified Angus Steaks, crab legs, lobster tail and pork, chicken and pasta entrees result in a wellrounded and diverse offering of dishes from the land and sea that will please the entire family.

Justin Cotton, a Local Chef Who Personally Fishes Tampa Bay’s Waters Locally born and raised in Tampa Bay, Chef Justin enrolled in culinary school at the young age of 18. Justin has fished all of Tampa Bay’s best spots, in addition to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. “Being a local and having grown up in and around the water has enabled me to develop a real appreciation for all things that come from the sea. That translates into my cooking,” said Chef Justin. “Our focus is to prepare the freshest seafood available, with absolute consistency. Our customers should be able to order any one of our entrees today, and have it be exactly the same taste and quality six months from now,” Chef Justin continued. Lifelong Ties To The Sea Middle Grounds Grill was founded nearly 11 years ago as a transformation from the Coover family’s well-known restaurant: Robby’s Pancake House. Today, that transformation has become a local favorite. This restaurant is casual and fun with an upscale atmosphere. Anyone who loves world-class seafood and steaks will love the Middle Grounds Grill. Like so many others, you may find yourself coming back often.

H

ome cooking served with a side of Southern hospitality helped Zoës Kitchen become a local favorite when the restaurant founded by the Cassimus family first opened in downtown Birmingham, AL in 1995. Mom-and-pop owners Zoe and Marcus whipped up made-fromscratch meals featuring family recipes to create a menu pairing traditional Southern specialties with signature dishes from Mediterranean countries. Simple, tasty, fresh food prepared and presented in a warm, welcoming environment made their restaurant a hometown hit. Blending those diverse cuisines enabled diners to consider delicious and nutritious options. Their choices ranged from chicken salad to chicken kabobs, a grilled turkey sandwich to a Greek salad and a fruit plate to Mediterranean baked feta. The concept quickly caught on and began to spread throughout the South and, eventually, across the country. The story continues to unfold as on-going growth and expansion finally introduced this Mediterranean fast-casual restaurant to the Tampa Bay area in May. From its foothold in South Tampa’s SoHo neighborhood, Zoës Kitchen occupies a 2,800-square-foot corner site on the ground level of The Morrison. The newly constructed, mixed-use development includes restaurants, a fitness studio, offices and residences overlooking the busy intersection of South Howard and West Morrison avenues. Bold colors, sleek wood surfaces, lots of natural light and signage that literally spells out the restaurant’s commitment to genuine hospitality and life-enhancing foods highlight the interior of the new restaurant that serves lunch and dinner daily. Now boasting more than 200 locations in 20 states, the menu at Zoës Kitchen has evolved over the years, according to John Powell, general manager of the Tampa location. Some of the menu mainstays that speak to this restaurant’s Southern roots are chicken salad and pimento cheese which can still be traced back to the original owners’ recipes. In an effort to create a something-for-everyone selection of food, options offered include gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as selections made with fresh vegetables and herbs, whole grains and lean proteins. And to ensure the wholesome ingredients and authentic flavors featured are never compromised, everything is prepared by hand without the use of fryers or microwaves. The word Zoë translates to “life” in Greek, which makes this the perfect place for anyone enjoying an active, healthy lifestyle that demands to be fueled by good-for-you foods. Think hummus, tabouli, Mediterranean lentil soup and quinoa salad. But guests can also enjoy a sliced steak sandwich served on sourdough bread or an Italian flatbread layered with grilled ham. Don’t overlook the delicious desserts that, if not guilt-free, include a dairy-free choice. Yaya’s hand-made chocolate cake is indeed made from scratch and the zesty lemon cookies are made with olive oil, not butter.

By: Mary Lou Janson “This is a great place for someone who loves a healthy lifestyle. In SoHo you see a lot of people running, walking and biking by this location. There is a lot of good energy here and this restaurant is a great fit,” said Powell. A covered patio provides guests with a street level view of the vibrant neighborhood as well as a pet-friendly place to dine. Displayed throughout the Tampa location, as well as other Zoës Kitchen locations, is original artwork created by local grade school through college students. The restaurant supplies the paints and canvases and the students provide the creativity. Everything exhibited is for sale and the funds generated from those sales, along with additional monies raised during other fundraising events at the restaurant, are donated to the participating school or student organization. What began with a handful of locations in Alabama and Tennessee, really flourished when the founders’ son, John Cassimus, turned his entrepreneurial eye toward the business and guided its growth for several years. Today Zoës Kitchen is a publicly traded company headquartered in Plano, TX and remains committed to putting a personal stamp on its customer service. “We have a people-first mentality,” said Powell, who notes that the food is served on real - not paper or styrofoam - dishes, the utensils are silverware, not plastic, and servers will deliver orders table-side as well as whisk away empty plates. “We want to learn the names of our guests. We want our warm hospitality to get them in the door and bring them back. We want to offer a full service experience.” Zoës Kitchen Orzo Tabouli Salad Ingredients: • Orzo pasta • Fresh mint - finely chopped • Fresh parsley - finely chopped • Diced tomatoes - drained • Diced cucumbers • Lemon vinaigrette (or any favorite vinaigrette) • Salt to taste • Feta cheese Directions: In large mixing bowl add the vinaigrette, mint, parsley, and salt. Mix well. Add in orzo pasta, diced tomatoes and diced cucumbers. Toss together to completely coat. Top each serving with crumbled feta cheese.G

The next generation of the V12 Lamborghini flagship

STORY BY ANDREW NABORS PHOTOS COURTESY OF LAMBORGHINI S.p.A.

ven the best knives need sharpening, so its no surprise that Lamborghini has rolled out an updated version of their flagship marque: the new Lamborghini Aventador S CoupĂŠ.

By carefully studying the efficiency of the engine’s airflow, the variable camshaft timing and intake manifolds have been massaged to deliver 740 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque. A top speed of 217 mph is achieved by raising the red line from 8,350 rpm to a stratospheric 8,500 rpm. The engine enhancements are a logical evolution of their potent V12, but other changes took us by surprise. The Aventador S will be Lamborghini’s second production car with rear wheel steering, with the first being the ultra-limited Centenario. Although, they didn’t go into specifics on how many degrees the rear wheels will be able to move, this is a clear response to another Italian flagship with a similar system. With more power and steering response, the Aventador S needed more grip. The new front end has a more aggressive splitter to keep air from going under the car and two giant scoops to cool the brakes. The front end has 130% more downforce and the revised rear has up to 400% more thanks to a new spoiler. To cool the more powerful engine, most of the rear body has been redesigned to force more air across the radiators. Increasing grip puts more stress on the tires, so Pirelli has delivered a new version of the P-Zero. On the inside, a new gauge cluster has multiple display modes to keep you informed. Apple CarPlay is now standard equipment, along with magnetic shocks. Those interested will be happy to know that the production of the Aventador S is well underway with deliveries already being made. Lamborghini has set the base price of the new supercar at $421,350. And for those who desire their new Aventador S to be a creation of their own, owners can configure their model to their vision with the guidance of Ad Personam, Lamborghini’s customization studio in Sant’Agata, Bolognese. 82

Frank Morsani: A Philanthropic Giant Who Embraced Tampa Bay

A

Morsani is optimistic about the next generation of philanthropists, saying everyone can find ways to make a difference by taking ownership. “Young people who grow up and go to school here need to get involved and create long-term commitments to foster their philanthropic ideas,” he says. He continues to share his business acumen that made the Morsani name synonymous with successful leadership, volunteering as a mentor with Pasco-Hernando SCORE, an organization that matches retired executives with local small business owners. In a candid moment, Morsani says he’s also playing golf, something he didn’t think he could take time off for when he was working. “Since I sold my last company, I don’t go to the office every day, but my wife agreed to for better or worse, but not for lunch,” he laughs. “I don’t do anything every day!” G

“We’ve always believed that you should leave this place a little better than you found it.”

n entire generation lives in a community where the Morsani name is etched in Tampa Bay’s history. For many of these organizations, the programs and initiatives that are thriving today might not have taken flight without the generous support of Frank and Carol Morsani. Morsani, a successful Tampa auto dealer and retired chairman of the Automotive Investments, Inc. company, has been an ardent philanthropist for more than two decades. Giving back to the community has been a paramount discipline for the couple, who has bequeathed tens of millions of dollars to various arts, education, and healthcare organizations, including the University of South Florida, the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, the Tampa Museum of Art, and the Moffitt Cancer Center. The couple has also generously donated to Oklahoma State University, which is Frank’s alma mater. When you ask Morsani about his motivation to become a benefactor of so much to so many, he modestly says, “We’ve always believed that you should leave this place a little better than you found it.” This generosity from a man whose storied life depicted some of life’s biggest hardships and adversity. As a young boy growing up in Arkansas, his family lived in poverty during the Great Depression. He met Carol in high school, and after taking her to prom, they married a year later. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Morsani worked as a master car mechanic for Ford Motor Co. In 1970, a Mercedes-Benz dealer sought Morsani’s help, and Morsani moved his wife and two daughters to Tampa. A year later, he bought the business from the dealer’s widow, the first of 30 car dealerships he would own across the country. He detailed his climb to achieving the American dream in a memoir published in 2015 titled, To Be Frank: Building the American Dream in Business and Life. “We wanted to inspire people on the importance of overcoming adversity. Everyone has adversity in life. You need to buckle your seatbelt and move on,” he says. The Morsanis embraced their new hometown and became active on several boards of directors. The couple pursued personal causes; Carol studied interior design in college and fostered her love of the visual arts. The couple’s first major gift was to the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, adding the Carol Morsani Hall, an arts program in its infancy at the time. Frank Morsani pursued higher education, with positions on the USF Foundation Board of Trustees and past vice chairman of the board. The Morsanis have supported the college’s athletic programs, donating nearly $4.5 million to build the football program and fund the construction of the Athletics Training Center. The couple have also supported research at the USF Health Center for the Advanced Healthcare and the Moffitt Cancer Center.
