McLaren may not be dominating Formula 1 right now, but its automotive division consistently earns a place on the podium for its road cars. And while the brand has produced some truly insane cars in its Ultimate Series, it’s the 720S from the “lesser” Super Series that has grabbed more headlines. Perhaps it’s because the 720S is a bit more accessible in terms of price and availability than, say, a McLaren Senna or Speedtail. Or maybe it’s because I’ve watched so many videos on YouTube of the 720S embarrassing every car on earth in a quarter mile drag race.

Enter this issue’s cover car: the new 750S. McLaren recently debuted this successor to the 720S, and it’s a lot more of the same. It has 30 more horsepower. It’s 66 pounds lighter. Its upgraded 7-speed sequential gearbox has a shorter ﬁnal drive ratio. Its track is wider. Its air intakes are larger. It has a quicker steering ratio than before. The new 750S is somehow much better than the superlative supercar it replaces.

It’s also, reportedly, the last car McLaren will build that’s powered solely by an internal combustion engine. Electric propulsion is the future, but give this company credit for not abandoning ICE without a ﬁght; the 750S and its upgrades should ensure a McLaren still ﬁnishes a drag race ahead of a Tesla every time.

This month’s issue of duPont REGISTRY has two more supercar features you don’t want to miss. The first is our review of the incredibly innovative yet nostalgic Ferrari 296 GTB on page 30. This is the first Ferrari with a V6 in nearly 50 years! And instead of being down on power compared to its V8-powered stablemates, the 296 GTB comes packing 830 prancing ponies thanks to a little bit of electrification.

The other supercar feature is about our ﬁrst time behind the wheel, but not the windscreen, of the unique McLaren Elva, which you can read on page 48. As mentioned earlier, McLaren’s Ultimate Series has produced some bonkers cars like the F1 and P1; the Elva is the latest and most interesting of the group. The open-top supercar has no windshield at all, though you can get a ﬁxed windscreen as an option (we don’t recommend it). This car is rare, fast, and expensive, which are the three main qualities we look for in a car.

If size were our main indicator of automotive greatness, the LOKI Coach would be our GOAT. Just by looking at it, it’s tough to tell that there’s active aero at play, but a spoiler hides in its back deck, deploying only at speed. Coupled with an extended front splitter included in the Assetto Fiorano package, and with high downforce mode engaged, this elegant two-door can still produce 794 pounds of downforce at 155 mph.

While the 296 is impressive from a design standpoint, Ferrari wasted no opportunities to make that functionality beautiful. The GTB has a mini SF90 vibe, although it’s curvier with protruding front and rear arches, a sloping rooﬂine, and a widened stance.

At the 296 GTB’s core sits an all-new 120-degree 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6. This new powerplant develops 654 horsepower coupled with an axial flux electric motor pushing out an additional 165 horses. All told, the pair deliver 818 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque, allowing the GTB to hit 62 mph in 2.9 seconds and top out at 205 mph.

Combining two small turbos and a torque-ﬁlling electric motor, the 296 instantly responds to throttle inputs. Regardless of where it is in the rev range, the GTB remains eager to accelerate. As you reach its 8,500 rpm redline, the V6’s engine note begins to shift,

Performance aside, the benefits of the GTB’s electrification shine around town and during early mornings as it only fires up with electric power. Thanks to a 7.5-kWh battery pack hidden in its floor, the 296 will waft silently for up to 15 miles on a full charge, at which point its throaty V6 comes to life. Ferrari employs a new Transition Manager Actuator to handle the switch between its electric motor and the V6, resulting in a seamless integration.

As this is an Assetto Fiorano car, its interior is slightly di erent than a standard 296 — mainly the doors, which comprise one solid piece of carbon ﬁber. The lightweight material makes its way to the rest of the cabin to places like the door sills, center console, and column-mounted paddle shifters. Its carbon ﬁber seats o er aggressive side bolsters and minimal padding but are surprisingly comfortable once in them.

The 296 GTB accomplishes what every Ferrari should. It is gorgeous, produces a unique sound, and is undeniably fun to drive. The added ﬂexibility of its electric drive makes it a joy to use just about anywhere. This may start the brand’s latest V6 era, but it’s setting o with a thrilling ﬁrst act.

We took the prototype McLaren Elva for a spin through the twisty canyons of Los Angeles.

I woke earlier than usual. It was a Tuesday in late April, and the thought of driving a prototype $1.7 million hypercar, of which only 149 exist, meant there would be no sleeping in. As I made my way down to McLaren of Beverly Hills, the anxiety began to build. There’s no telling how a car like the Elva will drive. Would it be quick but manageable, like the 720S? Or rabid, like the 765LT?

At 2,809 pounds, the Elva is light, especially by modern standards. It weighs nearly as much as a Mini Cooper but develops 804 horsepower — six times the power — a stat made more believable when you learn the Elva is almost entirely made out of carbon ﬁber. Its body panels, interior, and chassis all feature the lightweight material. Oh, and it has no windows or roof.

McLaren of Beverly Hills came into view. Dead center in the back lot sat the lime green Elva prototype, also known as the XP12W. Its presence was all-consuming, and it was waiting for me. None of the surrounding supercar inventory could peel my eyes o this low-slung hypercar inspired by a 1960s open-top race car with the addition of front glass for a more elegant aesthetic.

All nerves aside, I climbed behind the wheel and set o straight into traffic. Most Angelenos are used to six-figure machines breezing around town, but the Elva is di erent. You don’t sit in it as much as you do on it. At 5-foot-10-inches tall, I feel the upper half of my torso sticking out. The XP12W has a windshield, but it’s low, providing a narrow ﬁeld of view.

After an arduous hour on the highway, and with my ears ringing from the wind noise, I reached my favorite canyon road. The right pedal met the ﬂoor for the ﬁrst time, and I was met with a familiar acceleration experience. The Elva falls somewhere between a 720S and 765 LT in terms of straight-line aggression. It may have more power than both but lacks the LT’s shortened gear ratios and lags low in the rev range before exploding with performance once

you approach the redline. While it’ll hit 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and 124 mph in less than 7, it doesn’t feel overwhelming like it does in an LT.

Factor in the lack of a roof or windows — and the tiny windshield — and it is the most drama-ﬁlled car I’ve ever driven. It’s not speed dependent either. You’re so exposed to the elements that even a stroll feels like a high-speed blast. With so much air ﬂowing through the cabin, and the crackling exhaust screaming behind your ears, it overwhelms all the senses.

I pressed on, carefully picking up the pace. I knew built-in rollover bars would deploy if I ﬂipped, but the stakes felt higher with so much of me sticking out of the cabin. The Elva isn’t my ﬁrst time in a hypercar, but among the usual suspects, it’s unique. An added sense of danger pushes an Elva drive away from just another blast in a fast car to a truly memorable experience.

The model is so focused on its primary purpose that its most signiﬁcant weaknesses are its main strengths. Driving through a crowded city or on an open highway is miserable, but get it onto a twisty road or track, and it becomes what most modern hypercars are not: characterful and immersive.

Sure, people may look at you like you’re crazy when they watch you speed by in an open-top hypercar — and especially when they learn you dropped seven ﬁgures to own one — but that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? All that matters when you’re driving one of the most exciting cars ever made is you, the machine, and the road.

In 1963, Bruce McLaren founded one of the most historic racing teams to ever exist: Bruce McLaren Motor Racing. The years following the team’s conception would include events that would impact the motorsport world forever. While the McLaren team had an abundance of success in the Can-Am championship, the 1960s were tumultuous in regards to the team’s search for a Formula 1 constructor’s title. Not until 1968 did McLaren post a championship win at the Belgian Grand Prix. At the turn of the decade, the team — and the motorsport world — would be dealt a blow when Bruce McLaren tragically passed during testing. He would unfortunately not be able to witness McLaren’s ﬁrst Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships achieved at the hands of Emerson Fittipaldi, nor James Hunt’s Drivers’ Championship in 1976.

While Bruce McLaren is undoubtedly the true icon behind the McLaren F1 Team, there have been many other legends that have come from the team over the years. In the early 1980s, Formula 1 saw McLaren create a trio of superstars that would lead the team’s dominant era: Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, and Ayrton Senna. This success was led by Ron Dennis after McLaren merged with his Project 4 Racing team. Out of this new leadership came world-class drives and groundbreaking race cars.

The 1990s were a very fruitful decade for McLaren in more ways than one. Not only did Mika Häkkinen take the team to a Constructors’ Championship win in 1998, but also two Drivers’ Championship wins in 1998 and 1999 respectively. On top of that, McLaren was receiving glowing press from the automotive world as they unleashed the shockingly fast McLaren F1 road car. The start of the 2000s was promising for the McLaren team, but it wasn’t until Lewis Hamilton joined that the team would enjoy another Drivers’ Championship win in 2008.

Humankind has an insatiable appetite to learn more, to investigate, and to explore. Today more than ever before, we are witnessing a renewed interest in adventure and exploration. Whether it be diving, ﬂying, climbing mountains, surﬁng waves, studying land masses or the sea, or some other passion, adventure is here to stay. To keep that wandering spirit company, top watch brands are creating timepieces that can go the distance with everyone from scientists to outdoor researchers and explorers.

But timekeeping and adventure have always been inseparable. Charles Lindbergh wore a Longines watch on his wrist in 1927 when he made that famed solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in a single-engine plane. Upon his return, he worked with Longines to create a more apt tool watch, the Longines Hour Angle, which is still in the collection today.When the Aqua Lung for diving was developed in the 1940s, Blancpain recognized the need for a watch to withstand water, pressure, temperature changes, and other elements and developed its ﬁrst Fifty Fathoms watch (a timepiece still in production today) with Capt. Robert Maloubier, founder of the French Combat Diving School.

When Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the ﬁrst successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, they did so with the help of oxygen tanks and with a Rolex watch to time every move to the minute. That watch was built to withstand pressure, extreme temperatures, and shocks and would become the Rolex Explorer — also still built to this day. Earlier this year, Rolex unveiled the Oyster Perpetual Explorer 40 that recalls the watches worn by Hillary and Norgay.

Today, more and more brands are investing in the creation of tool watches for professionals and explorers to help them in their quests to push the boundaries. Montblanc spent years developing a Zero Oxygen watch for extreme mountain climbers, working with mountain climber Reinhold Messner (the ﬁrst to climb Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen). The Zero Oxygen watch case is designed to be impenetrable by oxygen when the crystal is put on. This eliminates fogging in

Montblanc’s 8000 Limited Edition 290 is powered by a mechanical movement, has the compass points on the bezel, and showcases the Northern and Southern Hemispheres via the two globes.

certain humidity and temperatures. Earlier this year, the brand released a new series, The 8000, to honor the peaks that are over 8,000 meters high and the climbers who summited them. One version will accompany mountaineer and Montblanc brand ambassador Nimsdai Purja — the fastest to climb all 14 of the world’s highest peaks (in just over six months) — on his next climbing venture.

Speaking of ambassadors, Breitling collaborates with small groups or “squads” that specialize in certain areas. Its explorer squad includes Bertrand Piccard, the ﬁrst person to ﬂy nonstop around the world in a balloon; Inge Solheim, who has guided

wounded veterans on North Pole expeditions; and David de Rothschild, who built a sustainable ship from plastic bottles reclaimed from the ocean and sailed it from California to Sydney, Australia. Forming this squad was a natural extension for the brand, which was the first to create a watch for extreme adventurers. Dubbed the Emergency, it is the world’s first watch to be equipped with a dual-frequency distress beacon that can be activated to help search-and-rescue teams find its wearer.

As official timekeeper of the recently concluded six-month-long Ocean Race, a

sailing race around the world where tiny crews navigate the world’s oceans and some of the most treacherous waters on the globe, Ulysse Nardin is all about adventure. Also a sponsor of the 11th Hour Racing Team, the brand equips the team’s crew with its precision Diver watch whose case is made almost entirely of recycled ﬁshing nets. When the teams all sailed into Newport for supplies and a few days of rest from what is considered the ultimate test of human adventure, Ulysse Nardin unveiled its newest Ocean Race Diver Chronograph, launched in collaboration with The Ocean Race.

Powered by a 355 cubic inch four barrel –paired with a 700R4 AOD transmission. Motor has the following modifications, aluminum intake, Holley Carb, March serpentine belt, aluminum radiator, long tube headers and dual cross over exhaust.

Frame-off 1 of 6,639 produced and one of roughly 3,000 produced without a radio. This Corvette has a fresh paint job with 56,601 actual miles! Fresh Onyx black paint with silver coves. Excellent chrome and stainless. New black convertible top.
