FROM THE PUBLISHER JULY/AUGUST 2016 Dear Readers, Welcome to this exciting new mid-summer issue of the duPont TM REGISTRY Luxury Living in Tampa Bay. You will notice several new initiatives specifically designed to connect you, the reader, with the very best that Tampa Bay has to offer. From fashion to food, from automobiles to activities, our new efforts look and feel good from here. How about your view? Please let ME (tdupont@dupontregistry.com) know so we can refine our search in time for the next issue. Traditionally, this issue has been the focus of the Best of the Bay, the Posh Picks, and, over time a host of other top-level recognition programs that come out once a year. Well, what about the other 11 months of the year? We are introducing our new Luxury Lifestyle Directory/ Tampa Bay as our version of a year-round “best of the bay”. The duPont REGISTRY™ Luxury Lifestyle Directory, featured on page 26 is a listing of our very best marketplace partners that will appear every month in order to keep you, the reader, up to date all year long. Each Luxury Lifestyle Directory/Tampa Bay member will have a unique identifying plaque for their establishment. Prominently featured “Diamonds” will be displayed at member’s front entrance (which may lead to special opportunities for our readers!) And, our blog will always feature our Luxury Lifestyle Directory Partnerships. The main focus of this issue is to give new meaning to the best that Tampa Bay has to offer. Well, let’s look at history! Our cover story gives you a glimpse into one of the best Tampa Bay (Clearwater) personalities, person, and product that exemplifies the capabilities of an individual who literally grew up right here. Sara Blakely’s story has been told over and over in many business-style environments. This is different. Interesting, informative, inspiring. Sara’s success story started in Tampa, moved to Atlanta and then settled in everywhere on earth. I am especially pleased to have you read about this Tampa Bay success story. Next, city magazines have long been admirers of high fashion, featuring the very best of “haute couture”. But what about practical? See our new Bay Style on pages 30 - 31. Local (and internet) opportunities to buy something wearable, useable, and accessible. This is an important way to promote our Luxury Lifestyle Directory members and outfit you or your loved ones in something special. Soon everyone will say, TM “I saw that in the duPont REGISTRY !” And, it won’t be just about cars. Also included in this issue is a plethora of other relevant topics. And, our photo-report on recent charitable and social events is, as always, a regular feature. If you are in any way part of these festivities (now and in the future), please let us know and we will do our best to include you. Excellent, energy … Tampa Bay at its Best. Summer is hot. Cooler fall weather is just around the corner. Shop and visit our “Diamonds” of the Luxury Lifestyle Directory. And, here’s to the best of the bay – our special marketplace partners and to Sara Blakely, Spanx (and her brother, Ford)! Wow! Simply the BEST. Enjoy!

NEW LUXURY BEACHFRONT RESORT ADDS GLAMOUR TO TREASURE ISLAND

T

he Treasure Island Beach Resort is the newest premier vacation destination in the Opal Collection of high-end hotels that also includes Clearwater’s Sandpearl and Opal Sands Resort. It’s the first new Treasure Island luxury hotel in over a decade and a welcome addition to the community.

EACH OF THE 77 ROOMS IS A SPACIOUS ONE-OR-TWO BEDROOM SUITE WITH AN AMAZING BEACHFRONT VIEW OF THE GULF OF MEXICO. Once the location of the iconic 1950-era Buccaneer Motel, the Treasure Island Beach Resort is a beautiful transformation of the property. With its turquoise blue and white color scheme and sleek, contemporary décor, the new resort is stunning with a decidedly South Beach-esque feel. Each of the 77 rooms is a spacious one-or-two bedroom suite with an amazing beachfront view of the Gulf of Mexico. Uncork a bottle of wine and watch a breathtaking sunset from the privacy of your own enormous balcony. Or, order a tropical drink from the bar and stretch out by the pool or the fire pit. It’s easy to forget that you’re just a couple minutes from home. The first floor of the resort is a covered parking garage for guests, a nice convenience that most area resorts don’t offer. The pool and sundeck are on the second floor overlooking the wide, white sandy beach. Clearwater Beach may get more national acclaim, but the Treasure Island Beach is just as spectacular and less crowded. The city unveiled a $1.2 million paved beach trail a few years ago and it is a pleasure to stroll along the wide curving sidewalk, especially in early morning hours and at dusk. It’s also fun to look across the vast expanse of sand and see specially marked grassy areas that have been set aside for nesting birds. Each suite in the Treasure Island Resort is beautifully appointed and designed to feel like a high-end condo with a wealth of amenities. Everything is done with good taste. Grey wood floors throughout the suite are very attractive. Spacious bedrooms have sliding glass doors to the patio, while large bathrooms have the latest rain head showerheads. The fully stocked kitchen offers beautiful granite countertops and top-of-the-line stainless appliances. There’s even a wine rack inside the fridge.

Gourmet Burgers & Craft Cocktails Executive Chef Michael Von Blomberg has created a terrific menu for BRGR Kitchen & Bar, the resort’s casual, hip restaurant. You can sit at the bar, in the restaurant, or outside in the covered patio area. Bring a big appetite. There’s a reason the restaurant was named BRGR. The custom, gourmet burgers are delicious and decadent, quite a takeoff on the standard, comfort beach fare.

THE CUSTOM, GOURMET BURGERS ARE DELICIOUS AND DECADENT, QUITE A TAKEOFF ON THE STANDARD, COMFORT BEACH FARE. Start with bacon jalapeno cheeseburger dip and tortilla chips, while you ogle over the selection of 11 artisanal burgers, plus a build-your-own option. Try the Bison Gone Wild with bacon jam, caramelized onions and smoked cheddar or the Nooner, a diet-busting signature beef burger with smoked bacon, aged cheddar, fried egg, grilled Portobello mushrooms, greens and roasted shallot-truffle aioli, all topped with crispy fried onions – an addition that Chef Von Blomberg says make the dish “simply pop.” If you prefer a few more veggies with your meal, choose the burger bowl with fresh lettuces and many extras. The chef also likes to point out the vertical hydroponic herb garden wall by the bar – the sources of many of the herbs used in the restaurant’s recipes and handcrafted cocktails. The Treasure Island Beach Resort is the perfect getaway for any occasion – to rekindle the romance, have fun with the girlfriends, take a stress-break from the office or even bring the family for a several day Florida beach “staycation.”

WHERE THE SURF MEETS THE TURF

G

allop, don’t walk, to San Diego’s glamorous Del Mar Racetrack season running July 15 through September 5th. Chic La Jolla ladies and Hollywood celebrities sip and sup in the chichi Turf Club, once the playground of Bing Crosby, Desi Arnaz, Jimmy Durante, Dorothy Lamour, W. C. Fields, Paulette Goddard, Edgar Bergen, June Haver, Ann Miller, Don Ameche, Ava Gardner, Red Skelton, Pat O'Brien even thenotorious J. Edgar Hoover. San Diego’s temperate summer is a welcome alternative to Tampa Bay’s oppressive humidity, perfect for an upscale Pacific vacay, a mix of culture and cocktails from Balboa Park’s museums and world-class Old Globe Theater to downtown Gaslamp Quarter’s eclectic nightlife and Padres stadium. If you can make it, you’ll relish Del Mar’s Opening Day, the most anticipated social event of the year. Stretch limos unleash dapper gents and lovely ladies in posh outfits, complete with elegant or whimsical hats. The competition for best hat is ferocious (and worth $5,000 in prizes); I once saw a chapeau adorned with a motorized racetrack among the fascinators and feather adorned chic-anery. On Opening Day, you can attend the Harrah-sponsored $30/person party features a DJ, dancing and games tent, gourmet food trucks, beer garden and cocktail bars, photo booth and jumbo video boards or dine with the hoi-polloi in the Turf Club. Whether you go Opening Day or during the summer racing season, you’ll be greeted by fountains, lush foliage, blooming flowers, vintage Hollywood props, stunning thoroughbreds and the hippest, best dressed crowds. When the caller yells, “And they’re off,” you can feel the energy. The food and cocktails are sensational from the reserved Clubhouse Terrace Restaurant to Café del Sol. On Friday’s the Racetrack is THE place to be seen with a hopping happy hour featuring signature cocktails until 6 pm (Cucumber Chili, Billionaire Margaritas). At 4 pm, the concerts amp the fun, featuring Ziggy Marley, Brian Setzer and other legendary musical acts.

Hollywood starlets and thoroughbreds go together like caviar and bubbly.

Upscale Hotels: Closest to the track is the exquisite Fairmont Grand Del Mar while the picturesque L’Auberge Del Mar nestles in the village overlooking the Pacific Ocean. L’Auberge’s glamorous Del Mar Suite has a fireplace, U-shaped wet bar and coastal view from three patios while the five Pacific Suites face the ocean. Even better, your pampered pup is welcome! Their award-winning restaurant, Kitchen 1540, serves dinner and Sunday brunch and you can get pampered at the full-service European Spa when you’re not taking a surf lesson or riding an Electra cruiser bike. On Opening Day, L’Auberge features the annual after party. Delectable Dining: For surf and turf, enjoy the Hyatt Regency’s Trulock and Georges at the Cove in La Jolla and especially Chef Jeff Jackson at A.R. Valentien. For casual seafood, Del Mar’s Poseidon and the Brigantine are the hot ticket. Before or after the track, linger at the Del Mar Plaza and enjoy Italian cuisine at Il Fornaio or new American seafood dishes at Pacfica Del Mar. Fidel’ Norte’s in Solana Beach serves classic Mexican dishes while Jake’s for happy hour and ahi tartare tacos is the best seat in town. The piano bar and ginormous steaks at Red Tracton’s is a racetrack favorite; you’re sure to encounter a colorful crowd in from Palm Springs and Newport Beach. HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SOCIAL APPEAL

AS WE AGE, OUR FACIAL FEATURES CAN CHANGE, AND CAN TEND TO MAKE US LOOK MORE SAD, ANGRY, OR BORED THAN WHEN OUR BODIES WERE YOUNGER.

A

s science and medical breakthroughs continue at an accelerating pace, people are living longer. It’s not unusual today to hear someone aged 65 say they feel like they were 30 or 40. With attention on staying fit, eating right, and now having affordable insurance more available, people are finding they do feel younger than they look! And that’s great. But what about appearance? How many times have you heard, “If I only looked as young as I feel.” Unfortunately, our appearances often don’t quite keep up with our inner vitality and spirit. Thankfully, those breakthroughs mentioned above have brought about treatments and procedures that can restore the youthful look we enjoyed years ago. Renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Drehsen has made remarkable breakthroughs in helping his patients restore the youthful appearance they desire. In a recent issue of the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Drehsen explained what he calls the “Happy Emoticon Effect.” As we age, our facial features can change, and can tend to make us look more sad, angry or tired. A study has shown that these changes can even negatively impact how others respond to us. (*) The “Happy Emoticon Effect” is about the significant social changes for patients who have received a facial rejuvenation that emphasizes the correction of detrimental expressions. With a normal face lift procedure, facial skin is generally just pulled up and back and can give the face that wind-blown or stretched look. You have seen these, and they’re not very natural looking. In his signature Refresher Lift procedure, Dr. Drehsen takes the whole view of what needs to be done with each part of the face to reverse a sad emoticon or expression and remove years off your appearance. The before and after photos of patient after patient show absolutely remarkable results. This procedure really delivers a very natural and pleasing looking face, one that others will actually respond to you in a more positive way. The Refresher Lift actually incorporates many different procedures in order 38 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

to address the exact right factors to improve your appearance. A normal face lift doesn’t resolve sunken cheeks for example, but fat transfer injections, as part of the Refresher Lift , would handle them. Eyebrows sagging or not aesthetically contoured is another problem often missed by a standard face lift. But a Refresher Lift , incorporating another signature Dr. Drehsen procedure, the Dual Pane Brow Lift, handles them. These are just a couple examples of the various components of a full Refresher Lift . Dr. Drehsen fully addresses what is needed to make you look younger. Dr. Drehsen invites you to come and experience a consultation with him to see what the Refresher Lift can do for you. Through personal consultation, which includes computer imaging, you can get a clear idea of what can be done and how the results would look. Dr. Drehsen often hears from his patients that the end results even exceeded their expectations from the computer imaging. Find out for yourself! This is the only rejuvenation procedure proven to restore your appeal. * You can review the study at www.emoticoneffect.com.

HEALTH

BY CATHERINE MITSEAS

HOVERING ABOVE THE WATER KODAWARI IN SOUTH TAMPA IS A YOGA STUDIO WITH A MISSION.

I

ndeed even Kodawari’s logo of a butterfly in flight illustrates founder Annette Scott’s mantra: “We are really about the transformative capacity of every human.” Established March 2016, the new, 5,000 square-foot business blends state-of-the-art hot and cool yoga studios, extensive massage and bodywork therapies, and a retail center featuring custom, (primarily) locally-made gifts as well as an organic coffee and tea café offering healthy “grab and go” foods. “We believe in craft. The focus is on the making. It is the practice, the craft, the making of the life,” says Scott, a long-term yoga instructor, personal trainer, massage therapist, and former doula. Perhaps no other component of this lovely, brightly adorned studio reflects Scott’s values more than its float pod therapy. Float therapy is a promising therapeutic treatment for a variety of chronic ailments and has even come under the radar of neuroscientists researching brain responses to extreme stress.

40

SWEETEST, MOST PASSIVE PIECE OF THERAPY

In this experience, which Scott calls the “sweetest, most passive piece of therapy,” individuals float belly up in a bed of water treated with 850 pounds of Epson salts and heated to the skin’s exact temperature of 93.3 degrees. Lying in the dark, encased in an enclosed egg-shaped pod and buoyed by the briny water, practitioners soon enter a deep meditative state that frees the mind to wander introspectively. The pods are sanitized through a program of ultraviolet light, chlorination and peroxide as well as a triple filtration system. Clients shower prior to entering and are encouraged to float naked. The acclaimed medicinal benefits of sensory deprivation include pain relief, decreased production of Adrenaline, increased production of endorphins, and better mental clarity. Floating's Origin: The idea of such therapy began in the 1950’s under John Lilly, a neuroscientist whose controversial method of combining hallucinogenic drug use with isolation tanks earned the technique a bad rap well into the 1970’s. In the 1990’s, long-term float researcher and now associate professor at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, Thomas H. Fine published studies on floating which showed in small sample groups, a drop in their levels of the stress-signaling hormone cortisol.

According to a Time magazine blog published November 19, 2015, “research by Fine and others has shown improvements in blood pressure, mood, pain, muscle tension, and stress-related hormones from floating.” Neuroscientist Justin Feinstein opened the only float lab in the country: the Float Clinic and Research Center at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, Oklahoma to investigate the effects of floatation on both the body and the brain. He and his team scan the brains of healthy people before and after they float, comparing changes of activation in the brain. Although very early in the research, Feinstein and his crew note that floating cuts back anxiety at similar levels to that of meditation and some prescription medicines, according to the article. At Kodawari, float therapy provides clients the opportunity to step away from the distractions of the everyday world so they may relax and revitalize in a safe, peaceful manner. It supports their extensive yoga practice and Scott’s philosophy that good health is not just an absence from disease but a proactive approach to life itself.

QUEEN BEE OF SPANX: SARA BLAKELY STILL COVERS OUR BEST ASSETS

S

he may be the Queen Bee of the undergarment industry, but Sara Blakely is more like a trusted confidant than billionaire corporate executive.

During a recent interview, the 45-year-old Clearwater native waxed inspirational wisdom with a bit of humor as she shared her unconventional story of shaping the way women dress forever. A Florida State graduate who had dreams of becoming a lawyer, she worked a series of jobs after failing the law school entrance exam. Describing herself as a “girl who likes to do things to challenge herself,” Blakely tried stints as a standup comedian, a Disney costumed character and selling fax machines. While her father taught her how to reframe her failures by finding her strengths, Blakely visualized a different life by doing something to change the world.

I ALWAYS SAY THAT IT WAS PANTYHOSE GOT MY FOOT IN THE DOOR, BUT IT WAS THE SEVERAL YEARS OF INVENTION AND NEW IDEAS...

Her moment of truth came when she cut the legs off her control top pantyhose to create a smoother fit under her white pants. When Oprah told millions of viewers that she too had been cutting the legs off her pantyhose for years, Blakely says that was “the sign from the universe” that she was onto something big. She invested $5,000 of her savings to create a modern-day girdle for women. While continuing to work selling fax machines, she followed her passion and embraced learning what she didn’t know: the manufacturing business, how to write a patent and build a business without a formal plan. Two years later, Spanx was born with Neiman Marcus as the company’s first client. “I always say that it was pantyhose got my foot in the door, but it was the several years of invention and new ideas was driven by my passion to make things better and more comfortable for women,” she said. Sixteen years after she revolutionized the male dominated undergarment industry, Blakely is a member of an elite group. As the world’s first female billionaire with a net worth estimated over $1 billion, she’s named among Forbes magazine’s “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.” Today the headquarters for the undergarment empire is a three-story, 86,000 square foot office located in the affluent district of Buckhead in Atlanta. Spanx has nearly 200 different products for women (and men) sold in over 50 countries with bras, leggings and active wear with names like Power Panties, Higher Powers, Skinny Britches and Bra-llelujah. Blakely credits her ability to create authentic relationships with consumers before social media.

42 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

“I always joke that I didn’t realize I was a Millennial before my time,” she laughed. “I spoke authentically to women and not through marketing speak. I put my own butt on the line using my own before-and-after picture. It was unusual to use humor and levity to relate to the consumer to make her laugh or smile. I used a very feminine energy and approach in my business in a very masculine based business model.” As one of the world’s most powerful businesswomen, she is acutely aware of how her influence impacts others and is a passionate advocate for other female entrepreneurs. The Leg Up Foundation, a program at Spanx, has awarded 39 women with exposure to millions of Spanx fans through a variety of print and social media platforms. “I had no money to advertise and that exposure [selected as one of Oprah’s “Favorite Things”] meant more to me than a handout. If someone had just handed me money or handed me something like that at the time, I may or may not have been able to mobilize it in the right way.” She credits her success by trusting her gut to conceptualize products that people didn’t know they needed and can’t live without.

MY ADVICE IS START SMALL, THINK BIG AND SCALE FAST...

“My advice is start small, think big and scale fast. It’s really important to embrace what you don’t know because that can become your greatest asset. Check yourself when you are telling people things just to seek validation.” The entrepreneurial mindset runs deep in her family. Blakely’s husband, Jesse Itzler is the founder of the 100MileMan, and her brother, Ford pioneered Zingle, a mobile customer-to-business platform that allows consumers to text and respond to hotels, food service outlets, and valet parking sites. In a recent Forbes magazine interview, Ford credited three key public relations strategies from his sister to help launch his company. Like Spanx, Ford leveraged the power of developing a unique name that would generate buzz without advertising. “When I first started Zingle, I was the first one to ever think a customer should be able to text (message) a business,” he said. “Knowing the world would one day recognize how essential this form of customer communication is, it was important to me to create a company name that was memorable (“Zingle”) and had the ability to become a mega brand.” Described as the “Michael Jordan of undergarments for men” by her husband and praised by women for smoothing out their derrieres, Blakely admits that she still gets flashed everywhere. Anonymity is no longer an option. “Everywhere I go women are saying thank you, hugging me, or flashing me. My son has witnessed that,” laughed Blakley. “The women I meet say Spanx changed their life. That’s a pretty big phrase to be attached to a product.” With her recent return to head Spanx’s new product development, Blakely credits bucketing her days to allow her to focus time to be a working wife and mother of four children: 7-year-old Lazar Blakely Itzler, two-year-old twin boys, and a 7month old daughter. While her children don’t yet understand how their mother has shaped the world, Blakely says she looks for opportunities to change the mindset of what an inventor looks like.

At a recent school event at her son’s school, “Lazar asked me, ‘Why are you here Mommy?’ ‘Well, honey I am an inventor.’ ‘You are?’ he asked. It was so cute to see him be confused on why I was there. I asked all the kindergarteners what does an inventor look like. They all said a man, with no hair and older. I said, well I am an inventor and their eyes got really big.” She is now adding another title to her list of achievements: book author. She came up with the idea when she was pregnant with her first child. “I woke up in the middle of the night with three days left in my pregnancy. I saw my belly as a canvas and I wanted to do something fun and artistic with my body. I wrote down watermelon, basketball, beach ball and Mr. Potato Head. The next morning, a friend used kid’s face paint to create the images while another friend took photos. I gave it to my husband as a gift and he said I needed to do something more.” “The Belly Project” features over 100 real women and celebrities using their pregnant bellies as painted canvases to create artistic images. Warren Buffett also makes a cameo in the book, which is scheduled to debut in October. All proceeds raised will go to the Christy Turlington Foundation Every Mother Counts to raise awareness for maternal health and healthy mothers.

SARA’S FAVORITES Favorite place to vacation: The Sandpearl Resort on Clearwater Beach. I’m still a sucker for Disney World. I got married at the Gasparilla Inn & Club on Boca Grande so that’s a really special place for us. Favorite movies: “Grease”, “Gone with the Wind,” and “Somewhere In Time.” Favorite book: “The Alchemist” (by Paulo Coelho). I recently read “Start With Why” (by Simon Sinek). Favorite part of the day: My morning commute to work. I create an extra amount of time in the car that my friends have called my fake commute. I allow myself an extra 20 to 30 minutes to drive aimlessly around town before I get to the office. I get a lot of inspiration and clarity in that time. M

ove over wine, it’s beers turn to shine. Yes, drinking beer is chic, thanks to the craft beer explosion that mushroomed in California and Colorado, spreading hops like wildfire.

The Brewers Guild of Florida says that although we are a latecomer to the craft beer scene, its predicted that soon Florida will boast 500 breweries estimated at $2.5 billion! Still not convinced? USF St. Petersburg introduced a Brewing Arts Program just this year. From New York to Los Angeles, beer sommeliers, beer and food tasting events and beer/food pairing suppers are all the rage. August’s WaZoo Beer Fest, home brew boutiques and craft beer taps at Angry Pepper, Stillwater Tavern and Big Jim’s are just the tip of the suds-berg. Here’s the scoop on what’s brewing here in Tampa Bay. A Hoppy Marriage: Today, beer-friendly foods go beyond nuts and pretzels. National gastropubs (The Yard House, B.J.’s, Gordon Biersch) celebrate sudsy food/beer matches on their menus while local chefs whip up everything from barbecue to chili with a ribald stout or porter from one of Tampa Bay’s craft brewers. Want to quell a spicy sandwich? Discover nirvana when you pair a 3 Daughters’ Beach Blond with a grilled chicken, bacon and Pepper Jack cheese wrap. Looking for elegant beginnings? At the July 6th Grey Salt’s Cigar City Brewing dinner, Florida Cracker Belgian-Style White Ale paired perfectly with the Chicken Profiteroles and Scallop Crudo starters.

46 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Beer/Food Pairing Pointers: Like wine, today’s pairings are no longer red for meat, white for seafood/chicken. Beer has a wide range of flavor characteristics, from bitter to sweet, and makes ingredients sing. Look for common flavors that echo but don’t overpower a dish, such as a spicy pale ale with a Thai dish. A hoppy beer has bitterness that cuts the heat in spicy foods while a stout’s smoky notes work well with ribs. Our craft brewers recommend these pairings for your next party: Ale: Pair with robust dishes such as burgers; spicy wings; Asian food; Mexican food; spicy food; nutty food; fried food; pizza; steaks; Cheddar, Parmesan, or Edam cheeses. Blonde/Lager: It’s like a crisp white wine and best paired with shellfish; light seafood; sushi; grilled pork and chicken; pasta dishes without cream or meat sauces; Vietnamese/Thai/Latin food. Pilsner: Pair with Muenster, Havarti, and Monterey Jack cheeses; salads; light seafood; salmon; tuna; trout; asparagus; Asian/Mexican food. Porter: Pair with smoked foods; barbecue; sausage; rich stews; meats; bacon; chili; braised dishes and chocolate cake for dessert. Wheat Beer/ Hefeweizen: Pair with light soups and salads; vegetarian dishes; sushi; Gruyère cheese and Feta/goat cheese; fruity Asian dishes; citrus-flavored dishes, including dessert and salad dressings. SACRED PEPPER BRINGS BOLD FLAVORS TO TAMPA

D

ramatic three-dimensional art installations add intrigue to overhead spaces and walls. A floor-to-ceiling backlit mirror etched with a handwritten recipe makes a stunning backdrop for the main dining room.

Sun-bleached seashells literally add a Florida feel to exterior walls while Italian agate embedded in the surface of the centerpiece bar emits a warm glow. Electrifying cobalt blue hues highlight chairs and carpet to boldly contrast with lightly colored Pecky Cypress boards and beams covering walls and ceilings. Sacred Pepper shows it is no shrinking violet when it comes to a one-of-akind restaurant design reflecting the singular style of Candy DeBartolo. DeBartolo, matriarch of the family that owns the restaurant and operates one of the largest family-owned companies in the Tampa Bay area, put her personal stamp on the restaurant in more ways than one. Her penmanship and personal not-sosecret marinara sauce are displayed on the mirror. “To be a great restaurant I think you first need a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere,” DeBartolo said. “You need to be greeted by happy, smiling faces. Your food has to be a little different in taste and presentation. It must be so tasty that people keep coming back. I believe Sacred Pepper does all of this.” DeBartolo collaborated with Enrique Crespo of Crespo Design Group to re-imagine the North Tampa site that previously housed Grille 116 and Don Pan Bakery. After thoroughly gutting the 7,100-square-foot space, they transformed it into a stylish 202-seat destination for discerning diners to sip signature Sacred Cocktails and fine wines, share conversation and small plates of Honey Goat Cheese Baklava and crab cakes and enjoy pizzettes (a cross between a flatbread and a pizza) to made-from-scratch pastas defined as American Contemporary cuisine. “Our main mission was to keep it simple. By making dishes from scratch and using high quality ingredients we create food that is comfortable but not complicated,” said Executive Chef James Maita. “There is so much ambiance throughout the restaurant that we decided to make it easy for our guests to tour our menu and ensure that what they select is what they get. There are no surprises.” The accomplished chef and Clearwater native hints the staff may stretch their culinary legs a bit down the road. Crespo, a Tampa-based interior designer who previously worked on residential projects for Candy and her daughters was thrilled to add the Carrollwood restaurant to his portfolio. “It is not often you get to design something where you are allowed to fully express yourself. But I understand Candy well and get her aesthetic. She wanted the color to be blue and I started running with that,” Crespo said. “Every element really took a lot of thought. Everything was designed for Sacred Pepper. Nothing was standard.” Paintings and art installations made specifically for the interior were commissioned with the assistance of CASS Contemporary Gallery owners Jake and Cassie Greatens. “After meeting at the location, we immediately knew what artists we wanted to contact,” said Cassie Greatens. Ian Ross, Dana Oldfather, Mark Joseph Oliver and Casey Johnson were the artists handpicked for the project. “We couldn't be happier with the way the artwork is displayed in the restaurant.” 66

TO BE A GREAT RESTAURANT I THINK YOU FIRST NEED A WELCOMING AND RELAXING ATMOSPHERE,” DEBARTOLO SAID.

THE ROUSH STAGE 3 MUSTANG IS A STATE-OFTHE ART MUSCLE CAR THAT UNITES WORLD CLASS HANDLING AND STYLING WITH A TRUE DETROIT MUSCLE PEDIGREE.

R

OUSH, located in Livonia, Michigan, USA, was founded by American motorsports legend, Jack Roush, 40 years ago with the goal of combining automotive manufacturing design, engineering prowess and unsurpassed quality. Roush’s mission was to create a vehicle which fused together street car and race car qualities. The outcome was the ROUSH Mustang. All it takes is a few minutes behind the wheel to realize Jack Roush has his finger on the pulse of automotive performance. ROUSH Mustangs incorporate competitive track abilities with a striking silhouette in a fully-warrantied package, which is assembled in the USA. The ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang is a state-of-the art muscle car that unites world class handling and styling with a true Detroit muscle pedigree. Under the hood, the ROUSHcharged 5.0L V8 power plant pumps out 670 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque courtesy of the ROUSH Performance 2300 TVS supercharger. Contributing to the RS3’s exceptional performance is an optional ROUSH TrakPak 3-Way Coilover Suspension System, custom-tuned by World Challenge professional driver Jack Roush Jr. This incredible combination achieves a tremendous 1.07g skid-pad performance, rivaling supercar capabilities. The RS3 is a force to be reckoned with on and off the track, and a ten-second quarter-mile is highly achievable with a proper racing tire and an experienced driver behind the wheel. ROUSH Mustangs also feature an optional innovative ROUSH Active Performance Exhaust System. This patented, game-changing exhaust system gives the driver access to four distinct exhaust compositions. “Touring” mode has a subtle, understated tone perfect for flying under the radar. “Sport” mode is an all-around dynamic mode that changes tone based on inputs from your vehicle. “Track” mode is wide-open, tuned for maximum performance and sound. “Custom” mode allows the driver to custom program the valve activation from their Apple device as well as offering virtually endless sound possibilities.

LES AND PAM MUMA A LEGACY OF GIVING

S

pend even the shortest amount of time with Les and Pam Muma and you’ll quickly realize the couple’s passion for supporting children’s education throughout the Tampa Bay area, from elementary school through university. The couple, both from Winter Haven and University of South Florida alumnae, have been married for 51 years and consider theirs a partnership, both in life and in their philanthropic efforts. This spring, the Mumas donated a $5 million legacy gift to Junior Achievement (JA) of Tampa Bay, an organization in which Pam has been involved for nearly 30 years, both locally and in Wisconsin, prior to Les’ retirement and the couple’s relocation back to the Tampa Bay area. The legacy gift is designated to support expansion of the organization’s regional programs, including BizTown and the new JA Finance Park, for which Pam is leading a capital campaign. “With Junior Achievement, we are confident with each and every donation, we are working with an organization helping young people to value and prepare for their future in our American free enterprise system, “ said Pam. She is especially keen that both BizTown and Finance Park provide economic education to fifth and eighth graders, respectively, preparing them for their futures as financially successful adults. “We believe so much in educating children,” explained Pam. Upon announcing the gift in May, Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay President Richard George said, “Pam and Les Muma are truly inspirational philanthropists who love JA and are passionate to invest in our young people of Tampa Bay.

“Pam and Les’ investment will have a tremendous impact on the educational experience for our future generations. They have a deep and real passion for Junior Achievement, its students, and its programs,” he added. In addition to supporting Junior Achievement, in Fall 2014 the Mumas gave a $25 million gift to the University of South Florida and renamed the College of Business the University of South Florida Muma College of Business. “We wanted to make a transformative gift to the USF College of Business,” 80 www.duPontREGISTRY.com

said Les. “We’re impressed with the new dean, and wanted to help transform the college and its tremendous potential. We’re proud of what’s going on over there.” “Pam and Les Muma have a deep and real passion for the University of South Florida, its students and its faculty,” said University of South Florida Foundation CEO Joel Momberg. “This transformative gift for the USF College of Business exemplifies this, and in naming the Muma College of Business, we forever recognize this legacy of support.” Shortly after relocating back to the Tampa Bay area, in 2006 the Mumas gave a gift of $6 million to support a partnership between USF and Tampa General Hospital (TGH). The gift helped finance the rebuilding of a 40-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at TGH into a 90-private-bed facility, named the Jennifer Leigh Muma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in memory of the Muma’s daughter who passed away in a neonatal nursery. At the time, Pam said she and Les gave the gift for two reasons: “First, we want to help any family who experiences a situation similar to ours with a newborn in critical need for special care. And second, we believe research can help create and identify the best treatments for those smallest, sickest children.” The expansion was completed in 2010, and today the Jennifer Leigh Muma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is considered one of the best neo-natal care facilities in the southeast. In appreciation of their philanthropic contributions to the Tampa Bay area, the couple was named the first honorary chairs of Tampa General Hospital Foundation’s 19th Annual Gala held in May. In addition, Les served as General Chairman of the 2016 Valspar Championship, and Pam was recognized among the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida’s 2016 Women of Distinction. “We believe there’s a moral obligation to give back,” said Les. “Success isn’t made in a vacuum, but within a community.” “We get as much joy by giving and seeing results as the recipients themselves.” Photos courtesy of Pam and Les Muma

1246 PLAYMOOR DRIVE 4,525sq. ft. | 4BR Offered at $1,195,000 Steve Bunch Sold Hyde Park home in 2016 "The most impressive thing about working with Mike on the sale of our home is that he set reasonable expectations from the start and then exceeded them. He never over-promised to get the job and his input was key in getting our house ready for sale. Throughout the process from going under contract to closing, he kept things moving for us and insulated us from any issues--in short it was nearly a stress free process. His staff was very responsive and professional and Mike personally was always available for our questions. In the end he was able to sell our house for full asking price in 3 days--the result he obtained for us speaks for itself. I would highly recommend him for his practical approach, his sales process and highly professional staff. "
