I wanted to clean that up, show a little respect. Ultimately I couldn’t find that information.” The Hardmans never moved into their lovely plantation home. “The longest we stayed there was a month,” Barry says, “enough to get the flavor of it. It was really superpeaceful. We’d sit on the back porch, have an adult beverage and watch the deer, wild turkey, all the wildlife out there. We’ll miss that.”

Take a short road trip down to the coast of Connecticut to Stonington, a small-yet-now-diverse city, to learn about the history of the first settlers in the area—Portuguese fishermen. Geographically, the wide variety of landscapes caters to all Northeasterners: There are hills to sled on, mountains to ski on, lakes to swim in, and beaches to relax on. About a year ago, Michael Blair opened a boutique, high-end real estate office—Hunter Moore & Stearns—in the historic coastal village of Stonington in southeastern Connecticut. He did so with some special credentials: Michael had been mayor of the village from 1987–1992. Interestingly, one of his agents was mayor for eight years and is currently a Connecticut state senator. As it turns out, there’s a lot to like. Just a two-and-a-half hour drive from New York City, and due north of Montauk on Long Island’s eastern tip, Stonington is part of a ten-mile stretch of classic New England villages that includes Groton Long Point, Noank, Mystic, and Mason’s Island. Stonington began as a fishing village populated by Portuguese, and over the years has become increasingly diverse while maintaining ties to its history. “We like the mix of fishermen, weekenders, yearrounders, and people taking refuge from New York City,” Michael explains. “There are still affordable homes. It’s not exclusively high-end. It all adds to the fabric of the community.”

Today’s Portsmouth is quaint but classy, just 45 minutes from Boston, Portland, Maine and Manchester, New Hampshire. Portsmouth has a busy summer tourist season, but is also a year-round city. “It’s very much a walking town,” says Martha Baroody, a real estate specialist for Paul McInnis, Inc., a local real estate company serving the greater seacoast for almost 30 years. “There are restaurants and bars on the waterfront; the tugboats and ships that navigate through the river are truly amazing. You can sit near the water and look out across the Piscataqua River and there’s Maine. It’s a very lively waterfront.” Paul McInnis, Inc. has begun marketing a highly appealing, yet-to-be-built condominium development that will let its residents take full advantage of everything the lovely town has to offer—including museums, parks and events—all within a leisurely stroll.
