MARCH/APRIL 2015
Dear Reader, We are fortunate to live where the outdoors can be enjoyed almost year round. With that in mind, our annual Home and Garden issue brings you the latest trends in extravagant outdoor living areas. Resort-style amenities such as swim-up pool bars are now a popular amenity among luxury homeowners, as well as fire features and custom outdoor kitchens. dR HOME focuses on exclusive outdoor kitchens and the must-have elements that make them unique. From hybrid grills that can cook with wood, charcoal or gas to the best built-in pizza ovens, our local experts will keep you up to date on the latest concepts for outdoor entertaining. dR GARDEN takes you a step beyond the outdoor kitchen to explore fashionable options in outdoor décor. Customized living walls are a popular addition, hand planted and crafted as living art for your landscape. No two are alike, and water features can be incorporated for a dramatic effect. Or for the more adventurous type, Aquaclimb rock climbing walls can add excitement to your pool with six different curved designs that hang above the water. This issue holds a special treat in dR FASHION, which takes us to Milan for haute couture by Gioffré at the Grand Hotel Et De Milan. Vibrant spring colors are the common theme with textures from leather to lace. Shot exclusively for duPont REGISTRY Luxury Living in Tampa Bay, these Milan based fashions can also be found locally in Gioffré’s Clearwater boutique. On a personal note, dR BACK PAGE shares a cause that is making a difference both locally and nationally. Along with members of the duPont Media team and family, I will be shaving my head for Cut for a Cure to raise money for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation as well as Quantum Leap Farm. Donations fund research to eliminate childhood cancer and contributions can be made until May 15th. We invite you to join us in the fight by making a donation today at pcfcutforacure.org. Enjoy!

THE RIGHT PAIR’S RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! Eyeglasses are quickly shaping up to be the next shoe revolution. Just as women have collected designer purses, shoes, jackets, and jewelry, switching them out to fit the latest season, occasion, and outfit, so goes eye wear. With designs inspired by the looks of the 40s and 50s, and the world’s top brands showcasing their own styles, today’s eyewear comes in so many shapes, colors, sizes and styles it seems silly to keep just one pair. This season’s trendiest looks blend innovative plastics layered with tough matte metals and softer frame edges that round near the cheekbones. Just think Gregory Peck’s signature glasses in To Kill a Mockingbird. The sentimentality stops there though as the choice in colors explodes and metals range from titanium to 24-carat gold. Even the tortoise shell’s been given a new life as manufacturers like Danish designer Bellinger House pair bright patterns and solids to create twotoned jewels. The secret to the color revolution, says Jodi Cauler, optician with VIP Eye Care Optical Boutique in St. Petersburg, is in the plastics. New specialty materials allow companies to blend hues while creating super strong, super lightweight frames. Lindberg, for instance, is an award-winning company touted as having the lightest frame in the world while European-made OVVO Optics carries a line of nylon frames, yet all their eyeglasses are crafted to be nearly indestructible. Exclusivity drives a new level of elegance. VIP is the only optician in Pinellas representing DITA of Los Angeles, which are hand-shaped frames made of precious metals. Chanel is sold exclusively out of Belleair Opticians. Porsche Design reflects the luxury lifestyle while Tiffany & Co. evokes memories of little blue bags. “Eyeglasses (have become) an expression of who you are,” Cauler explains.
head. The arms shouldn’t leave indentations or be so wide that a finger can squeeze underneath. Men with broad heads often wear the wrong sized glasses. ŐGA makes wider frames specifically for larger heads. Frame companies Lafont Paris, OGI, and Kliik all market eye wear for smaller people. Cauler says the most common mistake is assuming one pair of eyeglasses works for every situation. Viewing a computer requires different vision from driving a car yet most people wear the same eyeglasses for both activities. That can strain eyes and patience. Instead consider buying glasses that fit your lifestyle moment by moment—from the office to the auto to the home. Talk to your optician about how you use your eyes and consider progressives or lenses designed specifically for each activity. “It makes you comfortable for your day. I rotate three pairs of glasses out of my purse but I only have two cases,” she says.
THE SECRET IS IN THE FIT Selecting the perfect pair is difficult, agrees Jim Dundee, optician and owner of Belleair Opticians. The trick is finding a professional who knows what looks right on you and can fit you correctly. Instead of getting caught up in shapes and sizes, it’s better to stick to the facts. A good rule of thumb, he says, is longer faces need a longer frame, what is known in the industry as the “b measurement,” while shorter faces require squatter frames. Cauler says you can wear any shape glasses if your pupil is in the center of the frame, as measured from the top of the frame to the bottom. Color is a huge game changer, Cauler explains. Try the same frame in three shades to see which one works. Ultimately fit decides, opticians agree. The temples (or arms) of the glasses should sit behind the ears and lay smoothly against the

CELEBRITY HAIR STYLIST TABATHA COFFEY An international TV star, best selling author, and entrepreneur, she is known for her nononsense approach and savvy business expertise. Coffey has been widely credited for her ability to help struggling businesses and transform people’s lives. She draws on her own life experiences to offer straightforward advice and the empowering message of inner beauty and strength.
HOW CAN A WOMAN DETERMINE HER HAIR PERSONALITY? For me, the big things are lifestyle and hair type. Having a style that requires frequent salon visits and maintenance—if you don’t have the time or money to invest in that style— means you won’t be happy with the chosen look or will be unable to maintain it. Sometimes, we have unrealistic expectations of what we want from our style. It is important to find a hairdresser who can maximize the hair you have while being realistic about your natural texture, time and products involved to style it and who can offer ways to keep it fresh. The advice will keep you looking great and keep you out of a hair rut. Hair changes don’t always have to be huge to make a big impact.
CAN YOU DISCUSS THE BEST HAIRSTYLES FOR FACE SHAPES? Working with the shape of your face and maximizing your best features will always give you the most flattering look. It can be hard to analyze your own face shape. That’s where talking to a stylist can be really helpful. I find a lot of women think having hair heavily framing their face can be softer or more youthful when in fact often, it is the opposite. It can appear aging and make your face look heavy or eyes tired. There are many ways to create an optical illusion with your haircut and color that can soften features, help your eyes pop and add warmth to your complexion. Although face shape is extremely important there are no hard and fast rules. I prefer to ask clients what features they would like to accentuate and what they would like to minimize and work from there. 34 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
HOW CAN ONE TELL BY A PHOTO THAT A HAIRSTYLE IS GOING TO BE HARD TO MAINTAIN OR TO RECREATE DAILY? Ask yourself what it is you like about a particular look or celebrity. Sometimes it isn’t really about the hair. Also remember that celebrities have a glam squad behind them. The models/celebrities aren’t waking up, getting the kids off to school and trying to style their hair before work! They have hairstylists and make up artists to get them ready. They certainly don’t roll out of bed looking like that. Celebrities also use a lot of temporary hair to achieve their look, which is why we see them change styles so quickly. One of the reasons I created my LUXHAIR® collection was to give women the looks they wanted without the commitment. Try clip-in bangs or a headband extension to add body, length, and volume before you commit to a big change. Hair should be fun and make you feel great.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE FLORIDIANS FOR KEEPING THEIR HAIR ATTRACTIVE THROUGH THE HUMIDITY AND HEAT? In high humidity products are your best friend. Use a humidity blocking spray, a serum for smoothing, and a light working spray for hold. Also, in Florida remember to use a sun protectant for your hair. Not only will it stop color from fading so quickly it will help stop the sun’s drying effects.
WHAT ARE THE THINGS PEOPLE DO THAT CAN REALLY HURT THEIR HAIR HEALTH? Doing too much. Too many chemical services on top of each other. Over processing is one of the most damaging things for hair and it includes flat irons that are too hot or used too often and dehydrate the hair. I think everyone should condition daily. The same way our bodies need water our hair needs some moisture. Conditioner closes the cuticle and helps smooth the hair and protect it. If you are concerned about your hair getting flat, use a spray-in or lightweight conditioner and apply it only to your midshaft and ends. You don’t need to put conditioner on your scalp as it can weigh down hair.
WHAT IS HOT IN HAIR THIS SPRING? Length, length and more length! Long loose boho waves, ponytails, braids and twists—this spring the runways are all about long glorious hair.

Be Treated Like Royalty at the
ROYAL BLUES HOTEL 45 NE 21st Avenue | Deerfield Beach, FL | 954-857-2929 | www.royalblueshotel.com
T
he Royal Blues Hotel sits unassumingly across from Deerfield Beach and its promenade. It’s location was selected specifically for its timeless qualities which remind owner—and film and Broadway producer—Edward Walson of time spent here with his family whilst growing up, and the ‘50s Floridian charm and ‘60s architecture and surf culture reminiscent of California. Open the doors into Royal Blues and you’ll instantly sense the hotel’s boutique ambience. Instead of a traditional lobby, you’ll be greeted by name and personally shown to your oceanfront room—one of just 12—where the simplified check-in process will be completed. Your host will then point out the features of the room, effortlessly transporting you from that ‘60s architecture to today’s modern technology. Walson worked closely with architect and designer Jorge Garcia of Garcia Stromberg, Inc. out of West Palm Beach to give each of the 12 rooms, and in fact the entire hotel, the sense of being on an elegant, private yacht, from personally choosing each original piece of art to hang on the walls, to the scents of the in-room candles. The rooms, ranging from the Classic Terrace Room (from $415/night) to the Junior Penthouse Suite (from $950/night), are all luxuriously appointed in a palette of greens, beige, silver, taupe and yellows to offset the natural contrasts of the marble and woods that accentuate the walls, furniture and floors. As for the aforementioned 44 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
technology—a state-of-the-art Nespresso coffee maker is at the ready, curtains and lights are operated at the touch of a button, and the bathroom features a fully-automated shower and facilities. At the top of the five-story hotel sits the Junior Penthouse Suite, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors that lead to a private balcony overlooking Deerfield Beach, a lounge area with pull-out sleeper sofa, a 55-inch flat screen TV on swivel to enjoy throughout the suite, and a soaking tub that looks out into the suite and the view beyond, with remote control fogging curtain for privacy. Downstairs, the elegance of Royal Blues continues to flow into its wine lounge and fine dining restaurant, Chanson. Reserve a table and prepare for an incredible “Cuisine du Monde” dining experience, whether inside the elegant dining room, or on the patio overlooking the beach. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served, and the health-conscious menus for each feature the best of local ingredients and organically-grown produce. For dinner, each course is perfectly paired with a wine that complements the flavors found in the dishes, and the service throughout is nothing short of impeccable. When it comes to dessert, don’t miss out on the deconstructed s’mores, a decadent dish that engages not only the sense of taste, but sight and smell, too. A stay at Royal Blues, whether for a night, a weekend, or longer, will certainly have you feeling like royalty, and making plans for a return visit.

EXTRAVAGANT POOL AND OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT AREAS
After a long week at work, who doesn’t crave a little downtime in your own backyard, especially if you’re fortunate enough to have a beautiful outdoor space that is elegant, well-designed and filled with all of the amenities you’d expect from a top-rated resort.
46 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
“Twenty years ago, the idea was to create an enormous pool,” says Bart O’Connell of Landmark Pools. “Today it’s more important to focus on what’s going on around the pool. That includes outdoor bars and kitchens, seating areas and fire features—everything that adds to the entertainment value of the outdoor space.”
MARGARITAS AT THE OUTDOOR BAR Top of everyone’s list seems to be the custom outdoor bar. The newest craze is the swim-up bar, fashioned after the fabulous resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean. Imagine sipping your favorite libation while staying cool sitting on a bar stool in the water. It’s the ultimate luxury. “Swim-up bar designs can range from the simple to the extravagant,” says Ryan Hughes of Ryan Hughes DesignBuild. Popular features include granite countertops on the bar, spa benches instead of stools, and the addition of pergolas, stone columns, patio pavers and
fireplaces or fire features in the bar area to make entertaining friends and family even more fun. “A popular effect is to position the swim bar near an infinity, spillover edge on the pool,” says Hughes. “People love to lean or perch on it, especially if there’s a great view. It’s almost like being inside of a water feature.” “One of the most important considerations for a swim-up bar is to get the elevation correct during the design process,” says Hughes. The key is to make sure the countertop is the right height so the people in the pool can look eye level and converse, eat and drink with people who are standing on the other side on dry land. Multi-level bars as part of an entertainment area are also in demand, says Hughes. They offer a countertop height, which is perfect for party platters and snacks, while a bar height is nice for people to lean against or place their drinks on. “A multi-level design gives you the best of both worlds,” says Hughes.

DECORATIVE OPEN-AIR SHOWERS Luxury outdoor showers are a favorite for clients at Hollingsworth Decorative Tile & Plumbing. “We’re doing at least eight of them every month. It’s a huge trend that we’re seeing,” says Worth Turner, president of the firm. Today’s outdoor showers are a far cry from what you would expect to see at the beach. The designs can be unpretentious, with decorative 48 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
tiles and a rain shower head to give it a spa feeling. Or it can be a full cabana bathroom with a private door, says Turner. When designing the shower there are several important considerations, starting with whether or not you would want seating. “If you do, a portable bench rather than something built-in is more popular right now. A good choice is a teak bench, which holds up well outdoors and looks attractive. In addition, decorative tiles are in demand for walls,
while natural stone and custom-colored Mexican stamped concrete are good choices for the flooring. Stone especially is nice because it stays cool and isn’t hot on the feet,” says Turner.
COMFORTABLE SEATING The right furniture is another key factor in creating the ideal outdoor entertainment space to suite your tastes and lifestyle. And today’s homeowners have a wide array of choices. As Rick Green, director of retail operations for Ethan Allen Citrus Park, points out, in the last decade or so, both the design and quality of backyard furniture have undergone a major transformation. “The best outdoor furniture can be every bit as nice as what you would choose for the interior of the home,” says Green. “For example, Ethan Allen’s new Home and Garden furniture and fabrics have the look and feel of indoor upholstery, while the tables and chairs are constructed of heavy gauge aluminum designed for year-round use and the Florida sun and heat,” says Green, Home Resource in Sarasota showcases design with a modern, contemporary look. To achieve that ambience in your outdoor entertainment area, Eric Cross suggests the Lolah Bar cabinet from the Kenneth Cobonpue collection. The cabinet received one of Asia's highest awards for design and combines sensuous form, economy of material and structural beauty, says Cross. At the same time, it is built using traditional boat-building techniques, making it very durable and able to withstand the harsh outdoor elements. A little imagination and planning, combined with the right products, can create an outdoor space that becomes the new focal point of your home.

OUTDOOR RESORT-STYLE KITCHENS
Today’s outdoor kitchens are at the focal point of resort-style outdoor living. And homeowners are not sparing any expense when it comes to creating a beautiful space that is every bit as nice and comfortable as the interior of the home. A custom outdoor kitchen is like having another room for entertaining family and friends, says Nancy Braamse of Olde World Cabinetry.
52 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
Dave Waring of Soleic Outdoor Kitchen Stores points out that the first outdoor kitchens were pretty basic in construction, usually a framed box with stucco on the outside that held a countertop, grill and sink. Today’s high-end outdoor kitchens are outfitted with top-quality cabinets and counters, along with ice makers, refrigerators, griddles, smokers, kegerators and more, says Waring. It’s all about creating a space to make spending time with family and friends even more enjoyable.
MUST-HAVE PRODUCTS FOR THE OUTDOOR KITCHEN Russ Faulk, vice president of design for Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, suggests that there are two key considerations for planning “the outdoor kitchen of your dreams.” The first is to purchase a top-of-the-line grill and second, to design the area with ample countertop space for food preparation. Kalamazoo offers a hybrid grill that allows outdoor chefs the opportunity to cook with wood, charcoal or gas. “We wanted to create a grill that delivered the best of both worlds—the convenience of gas and the flavor and experience of wood and charcoal,” says Faulk. To cook with gas, simply leave the Hybrid Fire Grilling Drawer empty.

The gas burners below the drawer deliver searing heat to the grill grates above the drawer. To cook with charcoal and wood, load the drawer and let the burners start the fire. Or, load in less charcoal and leave the burners on to supplement the heat. “The beauty of this system is you can burn far less charcoal than in a conventional charcoal grill while still achieving all the flavor,” says Faulk. An outdoor pizza oven is also a priority. “Outdoor barbequing has taken on a whole new meaning these days with pizza ovens,” says Lynn Kislin, of Appliance Gallery. Lynx’s new pizza oven is good choice, says Kislin. The high temperatures create a nice crust finish and you get that smoky grilled flavor infused into the pizza. But don’t limit your use of the pizza oven to just pizza. Get creative. For the latest and best refrigeration, Kislin suggests True Refrigeration’s new residential under-the-counter fridge. “True was a pioneer in commercial-grade refrigeration and now offers that same quality to

Now the newest trend is to build a custom recessed compartment for the TV and then trim it out with tile molding. In effect, you are creating a picture frame. “It’s a cool blend of functionality and aesthetics,” says Hughes. “The TV is protected from the elements, but it’s also very attractive.” In addition, the TV is mounted so it can be turned in any direction, making it easy to watch your favorite show from any perspective in the backyard—the food preparation area, bar stool or the sun shelf in the pool. Comfort and convenience are a must. Outdoor barbecues have come a long way from steaks on a tiny grill in the backyard. With the possibilities available today, discriminating homeowners are only limited by their imagination. the residential market,” says Kislin. “The product is created to withstand the demanding outdoor climate, especially here in Florida.” Nancy Braamse of Olde World Cabinetry likes the new powder coat finishes that Danver offers for its line of outdoor stainless appliances and cabinets. The finishes adhere directly to stainless steel to offer nearly maintenance-free protection from the elements, including salt air and chlorine. “It’s a great product and offers a gorgeous look,” says Braamse. The powder coat finishes come in a wide variety of colors, perfect for coordinating with the rest of the outdoor space. The powder coat also comes in eight different wood finishes, or it can be applied to stainless with a clear-coat option, which highlights the clean, modern look of stainless. While televisions are a standard feature for most outdoor entertainment areas, the way they are being showcased is part of a new trend, says Ryan Hughes of Ryan Hughes Design/Build. “In the past they tended to be purely utilitarian—just a flat-mounted TV against the wall without much thought about aesthetics,” says Hughes.

TAKING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE TO THE NEXT LEVEL From artistic living walls to high-tech systems to keep homeowners cool, and beautiful natural stone for floors and countertops, outdoor spaces were never so livable.
Dramatic landscape lighting and innovative living walls are specialties for Argentine Landscaping. Done correctly, both can create quite an architectural statement to take the exterior of the home to the next level. Living walls are like a vertical piece of living art, says Joe Argentine, president of Argentine Landscaping. “We can take a blank wall and add greenery to transform it into a beautiful focal point for the backyard. It’s a sustainable design aesthetic that can help with cooling, while also 56 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
having a positive impact on mental health and stress reduction.” For a recent project, Argentine Landscaping used an estimated 1,000 individual plants which were held up with an aluminum grid network and irrigated and fertilized through a network of drip tubing. Argentine Landscaping also uses lighting in the same creative way. “Lighting can really set the mood and create an interesting dynamic at night,” says Barton Beck, chief designer for Argentine Landscaping.
“Lighting is another part of the outdoor design just like hardscape, plants or water.” One of the priorities of lighting is to make the outdoor space even more usable in the evening. “Homeowners are putting a lot of investment into creating a beautiful entertainment area but without sufficient quality lighting, they are not getting full use of the space,” says Beck. “We work with clients to determine how they’ll be using the space and the look and feel they’re going for. Then we incorporate the space and function into the design.” Argentine Landscaping’s patented low-voltage lighting technology is less prone to failure from problems due to the wire connections. “When there’s a failure in the lighting, most often it’s due to the wiring. It’s the backbone of the system, “ says Argentine. “We use a cabling system that is durable, secure, water tight and able to withstand the elements.”
THE BEAUTY OF NATURAL STONE “Natural stone is the perfect product for the outdoor living space. It’s beautiful, holds it value for home resale and is ideal for the Florida environment since it stays cool on the feet and doesn’t hold the heat,” says Eric Barthelemy, of Stone-Mart, a privately owned importer and distributor of premium quality natural stone collections, including highend marble and travertine. “Just like the interior of the home, natural stone is certainly not limited to use in flooring or for pool decks. The possibilities are endless,”
Previous page top: Dramatic lighting by Argentine Landscaping. Previous page middle: Argentine Landscape's lighting is part of the exterior design. Above: Natural stone by Stone-Mart creates an elegant look.
says Barthelemy. With the color range, sizes and finishes available, natural stone is a nice addition to columns, outdoor kitchen backsplashes and countertops, outdoor fireplace facings and ledges, and more. “Homeowners are using natural stone to create their own signature look with complimentary moldings, borders and medallions,” says Barthelemy. “Decorative mosaics and tumbled tiles can also add a very nice, personal touch.”
STAY COOL & BUG-FREE IN THE FLORIDA SUN A spectacular outdoor entertainment area filled with all the luxurious amenities you might want can quickly become less enjoyable if your guests are dealing with the two biggest drawbacks to living in Florida: the bugs and the heat. A-Niks has the solution with a complete outdoor comfort system that includes bug misting systems, patio cooling and heating, retractable screens, retractable awnings, and waterproof, fade-resistant vortex umbrellas that can withstand some serious wind. To repel mosquitoes, no-seem-ums, spiders and other pests, ANiks offers a permanent, fully automated misting system that can be set for strategic times, such as dawn and dusk, when the bugs are at their worst. The system is set up as a “perimeter” in the backyard and is also designed to target where the mosquitoes rest, breed, hide and feed to control the insect population, says Al Erturk, president of ANiks. The company only uses products approved by the EPA for mosquito misting and also offers botanical or organic-based products to tackle the bugs. For homeowners who want additional control or a more passive control, A-Niks has a full-line of remote-controlled, retracting screens for all kinds of applications, perfect for outdoor patios and lanai’s, and even sliding and French doors. “It’s really the ideal situation for pest control,” says Erturk. “Homeowners have a full, open view of the yard most of the day and then when they need added protection from the bugs, they can drop the retractable screens.” www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 57
Although Florida’s year-round sunshine is a major advantage to living here, it’s an understatement to say that it can be intense at certain times of the year. A-Niks patent-pending Turbo Cool Misting System is designed especially for the Florida heat and humidity. “Our systems use both air flow and mist to cool the space, but we guarantee complete evaporation within four to five feet so the homeowner and the patio don’t get wet,” says Erturk. The system can be placed inside an attractive misting cabinet, which can be recessed into the ceiling or mounted on the wall to make it as unobtrusive as possible.

SPRING CLEANING IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR A HOME INVENTORY
W
hile cleaning out the closets this spring, it’s also the ideal time to take an inventory of your home, says Carrie Mitchell, founder of TWS Home Inventory. The first step is to document what you have and then to make sure you have adequate coverage. “Many people are under-insured and don’t realize it until disaster strikes,” says Mitchell. “But insurance is like taking care of your health. You want to be proactive.” Laura Sherman, of BKS-Partners, talks to clients about the insurance policies they didn’t know they needed. Some items are obvious, such as paintings, sculpture and extensive wine collections. But what about antique firearms that have been passed down in the family, pottery from a trip to Italy, musical instruments, oriental carpets, taxidermy or even a collection of fine pens or baseball cards? “Many of our clients have acquired wonderful artifacts from travels around the world or from an inheritance,” says Sherman. “These are items that are irreplaceable and would be missed if they were lost in a disaster. I tell clients, consider what you would want to grab on your way out if there were a fire.” Corey Konsulis of Most Insurance agrees. “The last thing you want is to have a loss and say well, we had this and this and it wasn’t on a rider,” he says. “That’s a very tough conversation to have with someone.”
If you’ve never taken a home inventory, how do you get started? There are home inventory firms that can be hired to take photos or video for documentation purposes, but if you’re doing it yourself, Mitchell offers these reminders: Don’t forget to open kitchen cabinets, 78 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
which may be filled with high-end cookware, wine glasses, china and knives. Master closets hold an enormous investment in shoes, handbags and designer clothing. And, garages typically contain an expensive collection of tools or sporting equipment. “Be sure to capture the model and serial numbers, as well as any identifying marks. For artwork, note the artist’s name, title of work, date, medium, size, current value and location of the piece,” says Sherman. “A very detailed home inventory might be time-consuming, but it’s worth it,” says Mitchell. “Anything rare, if you don’t have a rider or appraisal for it, you will need proof of it’s value.” Konsulis suggests undertaking a home inventory each quarter rather than annually. “It’s more manageable,” says Konsulis. “Corporations plan out their year in terms of quarters and it makes sense for homeowners to do the same. If you do this just once a year, it might be easy to overlook something with all the purchases you’ve made.” He also suggests getting appraisals every two years on items of high value, such as fine art and vintage wine. “You want to make sure you are covered for the current value,” says Konsulis. The last step is to store the documentation in a safe place. Don’t leave it in the camera or on the computer, which could crash. Instead store documentation offsite in a safety deposit box, or even better, upload it to the “cloud.” Use an external storage media like Dropbox that can be accessed from anywhere, at any time, and can be password protected.

LEARN TO BE AN ADVENTUROUS WINE DRINKER
At Cru Cellars in Tampa locals can delight in taking short courses on the fundamentals of wine through their Cru U Freshman and Cru U Sophomore classes. Taught by one of three sommeliers on staff, the courses bridge the gap between love of wine and fear of ordering it. Established in 2010, Cru Cellars is a wine shop/bar/restaurant montage run by Jennifer and Torrey Bingham that is quickly gaining a reputation as the go-to stop for a reliably excellent bottle of wine and fresh taste on classic cuisine. The Freshman class starts with fundamentals: how wine is made, major grapes of the world, varietals and how to pick out flavor profiles. Understanding the basics makes it easier for individuals to describe what they like and to try wines in a similar flavor category, Jennifer says. For instance, Pinot Noir lovers might like Frappato, a lighter Sicilian red, or a dry version of Brachetto, a traditionally sweet sparkling wine. The Sophomore class provides a deeper understanding of regions, comparing Old World and New World wines such as Bordeaux France and the Cabernets and Merlots of California. Jennifer and wine director William Lucius keep the store’s stock
original by tasting more than 100 wines a week and working with more than 20 different companies. Risky wine behavior is encouraged through a menu featuring a large by-the-glass list and wine flights. Chef Brad Sobo’s food menus compliment that seasons’ favorite wines and customers are encouraged to buy wine off the shelf, cork it at the table, and pair it with their meal. “Here we try to be really laid back and approachable,” she says. dR: What’s your favorite wine this spring? Cru Cellars: Rosé is such a perfect wine for Florida. It is a dry refreshing wine created from red grapes but only allowed to sit in the skin for a few hours. The skins are racked off then and it is made like a white wine. It goes great with barbeque. dR: What’s a great new wine right now? Cru Cellars: The Oregon Pinots are excellent. They are grown in latitudes similar to burgundy, offering new world fruitiness but an old world depth. Biggio Hamina’s Willamate Valley Pinot Noir is an excellent example.

In late December, Seminole Heights welcomed a new restaurant concept from two neighbors who happen to know a thing or two about the Tampa food culture. Greg and Michelle Baker, owners of The Refinery in Tampa, expanded their culinary footprint with the opening of Fodder & Shine, a modern Cracker restaurant serving dinner and drinks seven days a week. “At Fodder & Shine, we’ve worked diligently to resurrect the nearly lost Florida Cracker heritage of our Scottish, African, Irish and Spanish pioneering ancestors,” Greg, who also serves as the restaurant’s Executive Chef, says. “We’ve taken the modern approach to the cuisine creating something no one in the country is doing.” The theme carries through to all details, including the restaurant’s name. “Fodder” means raw material for artistic creation and “Shine” coming from the word “moonshine,” stands for informal foolish talk or thought. “The menu is a modern interpretation of iconic Florida dishes, utilizing historical cooking techniques and heirloom ingredients,” Greg explains. “We offer nods to the past—cornmeal fried chicken, rabbit and dumplings, Cracker Cattle steaks—and modern twists on classics such as pilau.” It’s hard to believe the restaurant’s 8,600 square-feet of space used to house a body shop and a dry-cleaning business—Michelle took the building down to four walls and no floor and rebuilt from there. It took nearly 19 months from the time the husband-and-wife duo purchased the building to the end of construction, but it was well worth the wait. “We’re not only business owners, but residents of this neighborhood,” Greg boasts. “We’ve planted some pretty deep roots. Largely, we promised to be good neighbors and the neighborhood has been very happy with us.” In addition, the menu is also a labor of love. “Our menu was arrived at after two years of historical research to distill the essence of old Florida,” Greg says. “We plan on changing the menu seasonally, to adjust for product availability and seasonality.” Greg and Michelle source almost all ingredients locally. The Cracker Cattle is provided by various ranchers through the Florida Cracker Cattle Association, dedicated to preserving the pure bloodline of these cattle, which have lived in Florida for almost 500 years. The restaurant’s historically accurate heirloom vegetables are provided by Crum Brothers Family Farm, in Bartow. Some menu must-haves include the Fried Livers and Gizzards, Bacon Fat Cornbread, Pilau, Florida Cracker Steak and the Fried Jam Pie. Greg’s favorite dish is the Rabbit & Cornmeal Dumplings because he’s, “a comfort food kinda guy.” “Simplicity is best,” Greg explains. “But it is incredibly simple to make bad simple food. The devil is in the details.” Greg and Michelle’s attention to detail carried over to Fodder & Shine’s casual atmosphere, which welcomes you and encourages you to stay, the perfect place to enjoy amazing food and amazing conversations with friends and family. “We want people to come, stay, hang out,” Greg says. Now, that’s very neighborly.

AUTO
By Andrew Nabors
GHIBLI S Q4 I
talian Executive Sedans are very popular, in Italy. Will they work in the United States? The answer has been a resounding YES! The Quattroporte has been Maserati’s full-size flagship for years, and it fills its role very well. If you have the need for something more sporty and nimble, your Ghibli has arrived. Ghibli arrived last year powered by an innovative twin turbo 3.0 liter V-6. A truly world-class automobile, the engine block is cast by Fiat-Chrysler in Kokomo, Indiana before being shipped to Italy for final assembly. The chassis is 7.9 inches shorter than the Quattroporte and is bestowed with a silky smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. Ghibli’s entry level model makes 345 horsepower, but if you have a need for speed, the S Q4 model produces a smile inducing 404 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. What’s more, you can send that power to all four corners in the Ghibli S Q4. This year we are treated to a few more refinements. Contrast stitching is now available on all models. Bluetooth and navigation are now standard, along with three months of Sirius XM radio. If you add up these qualities on their own, this car should be over $100,000. Ghibli has a starting price of $69,800, and Wilde Maserati of Sarasota can make your dream a reality. Ghibli

Cut for a Cure
One in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer this year. From March 2, 2015 to May 15, 2015 men, women, and children from the Tampa Bay area and communities nationwide will take a bold step forward to help curb this staggering statistic. They are shaving their heads for the 6th Annual Veredus Cut for a Cure Charity Challenge presented by Carrabba’s Italian Grill. All proceeds benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and select nonprofit organizations. The Pediatric Cancer Foundation is dedicated to funding research to eliminate childhood cancer. Their focus is to find less toxic, more targeted therapies by partnering with leading hospitals nationwide. Their research model accelerates the development of new treatments and they have launched five clinical treatments in just eight years. Along with some members of the duPont Media team and family, Tom duPont will again be shaving his head for Team Quantum Leap, a group of adults, kids and even a couple of horses supporting the cause. Proceeds from their fundraising efforts will benefit both Quantum Leap Farm and the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Quantum Leap Farm understands how this disease affects more people than those diagnosed. Through therapeutic horseback riding and other equine-assisted therapies, they help whole families battling cancer to stay connected, so together they may grow strong, and overcome challenges by engaging with horses. We invite you to join us in the fight by making a donation today.
