Dear Reader, I hope you have as much fun enjoying this Home and Garden issue as we did in bringing it to you. Fashion is back….with bright, vibrant colors this summer as you will see in dR GARDEN PARTY. We focused on all things summer that we enjoy so much here in the bay area, indoors and out. From boats to unique pool designs and even creative cocktails to compliment your summer soiree, the stories in this issue remind us how great it is to be outdoors where we live. Too hot outside? Let dR HOME take you indoors to see the latest extravagances in chandeliers, as well as cutting edge designs for your kitchens and baths. And if you must leave our fair city, check out the dR TRAVEL feature on Ladera, a hidden gem in St. Lucia with breathtaking open-air suites perched 1,100 feet above the Caribbean Sea. A truly unique resort experience. As you may know, the third Saturday of every month we host a Cars and Coffee event at our headquarters in St. Petersburg. June 16th will be a special treat as the 2012 goldRush Rally 4 “Rise Against The Sun” tour joins us before reaching their final destination in Miami. This rally will bring over 50 exotic autos including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Bugatti, Maserati, Viper, Rolls Royce and McLaren, in addition to the hundreds of cars we traditionally host each month. To be added to our database for updates on Cars and Coffee email TNYP@DUPONTREGISTRY.COM …… ..hope to see you there. Enjoy!

THE ISLAND ESCAPE OF YOUR DREAMS By Susan B. Barnes Close your eyes and picture your perfect tropical island. Do you see waters of unimaginable shades of blue? Lush foliage and bright owers surrounding you? Private beaches with no one else in sight? Intimate, luxurious accommodations from which to take it all in and enjoy the splendor of your private retreat?

Open your eyes, and look no further than Ladera in St. Lucia. For 20 years, Ladera has welcomed visitors to St. Lucia, and to their own private sanctuaries. With just 32 accommodations to choose from —26 suites and six villas—all with private pools, you’ll feel as if you’re the only guest on the property. From its perch on a forested ridge, 1,100 feet above the Caribbean Sea, the hotel offers breathtaking views of the volcanic Piton Mountains, a World Heritage Site, and the coastline below. If you must leave your suite or villa, continue your luxurious getaway at Ti Kai Posé Spa (“little house of rest”) with one of its wellness treatments. Recently opened onsite mineral pools are perfect for a soak, whether before or after a spa treatment, or after a hike on the mountainside or a day at the beach. The mineral pools were originally built in 1785, and it’s rumored that Napoleon’s Empress Josephine bathed in the same waters. If you want something that requires a little more exertion, the hotel will gladly arrange island tours, hiking/rainforest walks with local guides, bird watching, SCUBA diving and snorkeling trips, horseback riding, climbing the Pitons, and sailboat and fishing charters. If you’d rather lay on the beach, hop aboard the complimentary shuttle and you’re there! Or, visit the Saturday morning Soufrière market and take a cooking class using your finds. When it’s time to refill your tank, Ladera has its own on-site restaurant, Dasheene, which serves complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea, as well as lunch and dinner. The menu features Saint Lucian and Caribbean fare, based on local produce and fresh fish. At the end of the day at Ladera, retire to your private suite or villa and watch the sun set seemingly just for your viewing pleasure. One of the most remarkable features of the hotel’s suites and villas is the lack of a fourth wall, opening up to the breathtaking views beyond. When the stars come out at night, you’ll have unobstructed star gazing, too.
In celebration of its twentieth anniversary, Ladera is unveiling five additional Hilltop Dream suites (October 2012), a new fitness room and yoga classes to further compliments its guests’ experiences. It’s evident that Ladera is beloved by world travelers: it’s been voted one of the 10 Best Caribbean Hotels for the tenth consecutive year by Condé Nast Traveler readers in the magazine’s Annual Readers’ Choice Awards, and recognized by Travel + Leisure, ForbesLife and Caribbean Travel + Life magazines. Find out for yourself why Ladera has received so many accolades—plan your getaway to Ladera. When you open your eyes, you’ll be in the place seen only in your dreams. When you go: Ready to find your tropical oasis at Ladera? Getting there could take some time, but oh, the reward is so great! The best options flying from Tampa are via American Airlines and Delta Airlines. dR

There’s something about the wind in your hair, the sun on your face and the smell of salt water that lures avid boaters away from the office, the chores at home and worries in general. Just in time for summer, here’s an update on the latest, hottest, new features in powerboats, catamarans, fishing yachts and sport cruisers. Bob Vincent with Endeavour Catamarans says that the TrawlerCat 40 and TrawlerCat 48 Power Yachts are designed with an enclosed Sky Lounge, a combination command bridge and pilot house that
protects from sun and rain, while also featuring a roomy entertainment area for friends and family. The dedicated air conditioning and central heating system offers the perfect climate-control and keeps everyone comfortable year-round. Also new this year, Endeavour is reintroducing its catamaran sailboats. Concern about fuel consumption and the rising cost of diesel are creating customer demand for the sailboats’ return, Vincent says. The design of both the EndeavourCat 36 and the EndeavourCat 44 make them easy to sail, allowing a two-man crew to easily maneuver the boats. At Intrepid Power Boats, Ken Clinton has introduced a custom giro stabilizer for an outboard power boat, something not
seen before in smaller boats, he says. The stabilizer was created in response to a customer’s request for something that would prevent his wife from getting sea sick. “It really eliminates the whole port to starboard rocking of the boat,” says Clinton. “It takes the roll right out of the picture.” Intrepid has also designed several new boats. The 327 Cuddy sports a whole new hull design and transformed interior with features such as enhanced seating both in the cabin and topside, as well as integrated overhead storage units. The top-of-the-line 475 Sport Yacht delivers a high level of luxury and offers twice as much storage, recreational and living space as a similar size inboard, says Clinton. Amenities include room for the

boat is going to be hot, says Dave Bair. “Expect it to replace the inboards in this size. It’s reliable, quieter and more fuel efficient. No smell of fumes from the diesel, great maneuverability in shallow water and the roominess in the cockpit you’d find on an inboard with the power of an outboard.” Also big this year, says Bair, are new designs by Pursuit and Regal that give boats extras like retractable hard tops, outside grills and more. “These are like high-end SUVs on the water,” says Bair. “They do everything. latest flat-screen navigation equipment at the console and wraparound seating in the bridge deck lounge. Intrepid Boat’s 400 Center Console Tournament Edition builds on the earlier 327 center console and offers the sport fisherman a next-generation boat that takes everything to the next level, from the length of the boat to the custom options. At the end of the day, when you want to pull up and park the boat behind your home, Docks, Inc. can give you plenty of ideas to create the perfect look for your backyard dock. LED lights can accent the edge of the dock, the railing and the stairs, while underwater lighting around the dock and boat can create a unique focal point at night, almost like an aquarium, says Doug Barrow. For the dock itself, new extremely durable composite materials that have a hard vinyl coating are popular and do a better job of standing up to Florida’s harsh climate than most wood. Best of all, the composites come in interesting textures and colors, from white and black to fuchsia and everything in between, says Barrow. Happy boating‌ dR

THREE TROPICAL LOVE STORIES

CARLOS AND BEVERLY YEPES ST. PETERSBURG The passion has never left Carlos and Beverly Yepes’ 30-year marriage. Their latest shared passion is for their thirtieth floor penthouse in the sky overlooking downtown St. Petersburg and the bay. Four balconies offer endless views—the perfect way to begin and end each day together. “It’s all about celebrating sunrise and sunset and what God has created each and every day,” Beverly commented. She admits the number 30 is more than a floor: she recently received 30 dozen roses for the couple’s thirtieth wedding anniversary. And what a love story: She’s originally from England. He’s a commercial real estate developer from Colombia. They both love to travel and met at the St. Petersburg College library. He has a passion for racing cars. She adores planning their next trip and gives “packing lessons” from her journeys ranging from Tahiti to Africa. The couple ends each Sunday with a massage on their balcony by local massage therapist Ursula Correll, whom they

consider part of the family. The master suite was custom built for the couple. They sometimes sip champagne from his and her couches inside the master closet. The bath boasts a double steam shower and Jacuzzi. The 360-degree coastline water views from the Parkshore Plaza penthouse opens dramatically into the grand double entertaining room with 17-foot high ceilings and glass walls. The outdoor ďŹ replace and barbecue terrace are perfect for entertaining. This 8,200-square-foot residence with 3,000 square feet of balcony features a private elevator foyer, in home cinema, and game/billiard room. The penthouse home features dramatic glass blown art, giant geodes and a cascading water feature in the dining room. There are four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, four ďŹ replaces, and a study. It is a labor of love for a couple who does everything together.

JENNY AND LEO HAMILTON PASS-A-GRILLE “It’s all about family and friends with them!” the neighbors say when describing Jenny and Leo Hamilton in the tiny community of Pass-a-Grille. Jenny is a natural hostess and her interior design style is geared toward warmly welcoming and accommodating guests—from formal to casual. In a recent night, Jenny had 18 of her “golf ladies” over for sunset drinks and dinner. The home’s 6,000 square feet are graced with a sophisticated yet understated tropical style: five bedrooms and five bathrooms with an elevator and ten-foot high ceilings. The cheery yellow house sits directly on the gulf on 17th Avenue and Gulf Way. It is built for entertaining, accented by what seems like miles of granite, and traditional and tropical-style furnishings. Jenny and Leo Hamilton are from Kentucky and have been married for 22 years. Married on Maui, their furnishings tell the story of travels over the world. 46 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay
Four children and five grandchildren later, Leo is in the coal business back home and commutes back and forth to their tropical paradise in Florida. Jenny was an interior designer and aimed to create a getaway for visiting family, which includes a six-year-old grandchild. “The kids range from 6 to 26 and call my den the internet café,” she jokes.
What is her favorite room in the house? “Probably the kitchen, which overlooks the living and dining rooms and has a marvelous view of the gulf.” The tropical theme extends to the artwork, which was inspired by their favorite London-based artist, Janice Sylvia Brock. “We fell in love with her work and met her while in Barbados,” Jenny says.
LINDA AND RICHARD LIBONATE SAND KEY Imagine you build a beautiful 3,500square-foot townhome with spectacular water views on Sand Key near legendary Clearwater Beach—and it is destroyed by fire. Where to turn? The design team at Décor Studio 1 in St. Pete Beach was called in and describes it as their “Phoenix rising from the ashes” project. The rebuilding of Richard and Linda (LJ) Libonate's home on Marina Del Ray Court in Sand Key was a true labor of love. A fire completely destroyed the structure, but that tragedy gave them the chance to design and build a dream home. Linda and Richard Libonte met, fell in love, married and moved into the finished home to start their new life together turning the nightmare into a dream. The destruction provided a clean slate for room layout and even a first-level foyer expansion complete with his and hers offices. “The wide-open water view coupled with Richard and Linda's sense of style provided
inspiration for the open floor plan design and the furnishings.” explained Décor Studio 1 owner Tom Rogers. Richard travels 140,000 miles a year back and forth to California and always enjoys coming home to their newly expanded view of the gulf. As a two career couple (both travel around the country) they enjoy his and her offices in their home. After what they have endured, a special home seems that much more pre-
cious. “We take frequent breaks to enjoy the scenery, and we stop to appreciate what we have,” Linda says. At the end of the day, all of the couples agree that the only thing better than enjoying their home is sharing it. In Tampa Bay, we get to call this “entertaining in paradise.” Sharing a slice of what we have created inside our homes with those we love is the ultimate satisfaction. dR

LIGHTS FANTASTIC
By Gale Steves
T
here is nothing like a chandelier for making a statement. No matter what the size or shape, switching on a crystal light fixture adds an elegant centerpiece to any space. The new generation of chandeliers has no resemblance to your grandmother’s. Add pizzazz to your bathroom, punch to your bedroom or “pow” to your dining room in a single stroke. Carmen Vazquez of Lights and More in Tampa highly recommends that you select a fixture that fits well with the style of the other home furnishings in the room. He adds “while bigger is usually better, you should pay attention to the scale.” An oversized chandelier can dominate while a too small one just looks skimpy. Enrique Crespo of Casa Nova Design in Tampa suggests that selecting “a chandelier is more than a room decoration. It is a functional light fixture but it only sets the stage”. Let other lamps such as sconces or even recessed lighting complement the whole lighting in the room, like the lead singer needs the back-up singers to produce a certain sound. Bring pictures of your existing lamps with you when making your chandelier selection. This will help create a compatible feeling. The same is true of metal finishes. Introducing a pewter chandelier into a room filled with brass or verdigris will clearly not harmonize. The new fixture does not have to match but it should harmonize, adds Crespo. Everything does not have to match but it should be in the same color range. Another issue that is often forgotten when buying a chandelier is the potential glare of the many tear-drop bulbs. This usually happens when a chandelier is hung too low. “Glare can be easily handled with mini-shades or getting the correct light bulb,” advises Rob Barnard of Bee Ridge Lighting and Design in Sarasota. Frosted bulbs are an easy solution, but investigate the new LED or high efficiency bulb choices as longer-lasting alternatives. Before you invest in specialty bulbs, take one sample home and try it for effect. And of course, a dimmer appropriate for the bulbs that you are using can handle a softened effect. Here are selections of dazzling chandeliers to put any room up in lights:

urn your backyard into a lush, tropical oasis that makes a dramatic statement with a luxurious resort-style pool and spa. Today’s new custom pools are becoming
more creative than ever, with artistic touches and individual styles to satisfy every taste and lifestyle. Whether you prefer a design that resembles a
natural lagoon, Caribbean resort or Roman bath, you can have it. Here are some suggestions from Tampa Bay’s experts to help you get started.
RESORT-STYLE OUTDOOR LIVING IN TAMPA BAY By Janan Talafer
WHAT’S NEW IN POOL DESIGN? Not everyone wants to swim laps. Here is the perfect alternative. Picture a shallow area in your pool where you can add an umbrella holder, set up a lounge chair and read your favorite summer romance. That’s the concept behind the sun shelf, says Lauren Fiske of TriplePoint Design Build. Eric Larsen of Larsen Pool and Spa agrees. “We’ve moved away from the beach entry pool, which can be a bit of a safety hazard and introduced the sun shelf,” says Larsen. The sun shelf can be as small or large as you want and it can be customized with the addition of a bistro table and umbrella, along with
benches and bar stools. “It’s an idea borrowed from the high-end resorts where you can swim up to the bar for a cocktail,” says Larsen. What a great idea for entertaining at home this summer. Negative edge, infinity edge and vanishing edge pools that blend into the horizon on one side are also a hot trend. So are no-edge pools. Pat O’Connell of Landmark Pools says his company recently built the first no-edge pool in Pinellas. “The pool had a negative edge spilling into a moat on the backside and everywhere else had a no-edge design,” says O’Connell. “With the no-edge, the water is level with the deck and it appears as if there is no edge around the entire perimeter of the pool.”
CREATING A SIGNATURE STYLE Why bother to have a conventional swimming pool when you can create a fantasy land with extras like slides, spas and rock grotto waterfalls? TriplePoint has completed a number of projects for customers who wanted fountains emerging from the “coping”— the stones or tile that line the perimeter of the pool next to the deck. “It’s a unique water feature,” says Fiske. Landmark constructed a 25-foot long slide that winds through a simulated rock mountain. They’ve also adapted the “no edge” pool concept for the spa. And Larsen has found that seven-person round spas, slightly larger than the typical size, are extremely popular. “The spas are terrific for entertaining, especially with the addition of six spinning waterway jets on the sides and a bubbler with four floor jets,” says Larsen.

DECORATIVE PAVERS For both beauty and practicality, nothing beats Travertine. The pavers stay cool on your feet, they’re slip-resistant and durable, says Omer Ozer of Stone-Mart Marble Group. Because Travertine is a natural stone, each one is different with its own individual signature look. “The stone comes in multiple colors and hues so it will always complement your décor now and in the future, says Ozer. “It is really affordable elegance.”

Travertine tile for the pool deck and the coping, as well as outdoor kitchen areas are also the standard for outdoor living projects designed by Jeffrey M. Wolf General Contractor, Inc. The company recently completed an outdoor living area transformation for an historic Old Northeast St. Petersburg home. The final design did not include a pool. Instead the water feature was a gorgeous “old world” style tiled fountain, says Ann L. Wolf. The addition of customized, energy-efficient LED lighting created a nice subdued atmosphere for entertaining. Lighting is a specialty of Nebula Lighting Systems, which offers a patented LED lighting system that is custom-fitted to the pool enclosure. The result is a safe, eco-friendly full lighting solution. “It allows you to transform the pool area into a room, just like you would have in your home,” says owner Jamie Polkosnik. “The LED system is fully dimmable just like interior lighting.”

THE LAY OF THE LAND
P
art of homeownership is maintaining a yard and its landscaping. And that can be the challenging part, especially if you're the do it yourself type. Many homeowners have visions of their ideal landscape design—whether tropical or traditional—and maintenance is often an afterthought. In Florida, many of us naturally assume that bright, tropical, fun flowers will bloom year-round,with complementary shrubs and trees magnificently setting them off. “My big thing is to return to simple,” says Kim Levell of Levell Design (exteriordecorating.com). “I encourage my clients to return to a classic style of landscaping without throwing in a lot that they’re unfamiliar with.” Levell goes on to mention the extreme weather we have here in the Bay area is something to contend with. Our winters have differed from very cold for the past two years to very mild this past winter, and that can wreak havoc on delicate landscapes. “I like to layer and tier with tried and true plants that can withstand our varying weather,” says Levell. In doing so, she creates tiers and layers using hedges, grasses and statement plants that complement various trees. “Incorporating large swathes of native grasses like pampas and white fountain grass is a huge trend right now,” says Levell. These grasses compliment layering hedges such as green Pittosporum, vibumum, Pododcarpus, Ligustrum and boxwoods. Minima jasmine is a perfect way to finish off the lower layering effect. Angela Sessa, nursery manager at Wesley Chapel Nursery and Landscape Supply Co. (WesleyChapelNursery.com, 813-973-8890) agrees with planting for our local climate. “It’s too hot for a lot of the northern

plants, and we get too cold for the very tropical varieties,” says Sessa. Two she recommends are the drift ground cover rose, which is cold hardy and flowers throughout the year, and the frost-proof gardenia, which is more tolerant of our weather conditions, less finicky than other
gardenias and nearly insect-resistant, all with the same magnificent fragrance. Sessa’s also noticed that butterfly gardens planted with native and Floridafriendly plants are gaining in popularity. She suggests tropical salvia with its bright

red blooms; pentas in a variety of colors; and the golden dewdrop with its purpleblue flower. All are drought tolerant and cold hardy, and come back year after year. Though many people have shied away from them over the years for varying reasons, Levell encourages her clients to plant trees. She particularly likes using Royal Poinciana, Tababoui and Jacaranda trees for punches of color, yet they are hardy and withstand the varying temperatures. “Trees add shade, of course,” says Levell, “and that shade can cool your house down ten degrees, which will have a positive effect on your electric bill.” If you still want to add some color to your landscape, that’s easily attainable, says Levell. Simply combine elements by layering in tropical plants and flowers into classical landscapes. “Instead of planting a lot of tropical flowers and shrubs that may not last, incorporate accessories to add color and additional depth,” says Levell. As far as accessories Rob Talton, store manager at Wesley Chapel Nursery and Landscape Supply Co. notices a trend in pondless waterfalls and disappearing fountains, wherein water flows over the edge and into a reservoir, where it’s recirculated. By working with the elements we have here in Florida, you’ll be able to create a landscape design that will both compliment your home and be more manageable so that you can enjoy all your hard work. dR www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

t was not all that long ago that man labored over a small grill while woman carried the food back and forth from the nearby kitchen. That gave way to a small area of the outdoor environment turned into a mini replica of the indoor culinary center, complete with stainless-steel appliances and cabinets. However, that was just a stepping stone in outdoor entertainment development. The latest and greatest advancement is now the complete alfresco entertaining environment. Whether you call it an “outdoor oasis,” as does Ralph Mills of Artisan Cabinets and Design in Tampa, or “a backyard bistro,” described by Gene MacDonald of Refresh Interiors, Floridians are reclaiming their outdoor areas to better enjoy the company of friends and family. In some cases, the lanai has been reduced or actually come down to make more room for expanding the entertaining space, which moves far beyond a mere outdoor barbecue. Room for the mobile bar, outdoor refrigerator, auxiliary cooking burners, wine cooler, beer dispenser, freezer and even a UL-rated dishwasher are must-haves. Creating this backyard pleasure place is not a modest investment. It can easily run from $25,000 to $100,000 depending on the grandeur of the setting, suggests Brian of Kitchen and Bath Ideas by Leverette in Tampa, but it expands the total living space. And isn’t that why we live in Florida—to enjoy the great outdoors year-round?
Counter Attraction One of the biggest choices you may have to make is not the size of your grill or even your outdoor culinary center, but that of the hard-working countertop that holds the whole area altogether. It is not enough to echo the choices that were made in the indoor kitchen. The countertop is, after 82 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay
all, 30% or more of the color or pattern possibilities of this culinary center, and why not make it outstanding? Designers have responded with ideas that make the indoor kitchen seem tame. “Chances are you would not want to repeat the same colors or materials”, says Karen Alonso of Kitchen, Bath and Beyond in Tampa. Designers echo that thought by suggesting that clients think of this entertaining area as more playful or even colorful. “The search is on for different granite patterns or other stone products that can naturally stand up to the weather and sun,” reports Larry Crowley of Cutting Edge Granite. Good old reliable terrazzo is having a rebirth outside and Vetrazzo, a new countertop material rated for outdoor use and recycled glass, both of which can be embedded with shells or broken pottery, offer the most unique looks. The key ingredient is durability. Some of the familiar solid surface alternatives are not recommended for outdoor use; be sure to check carefully about the warranty before finalizing your choice of countertop materials. Some need to have protection of an overhead covering or at least no full exposure to the sun. Others, made from quartz composite, offer a color alternative that natural stone cannot provide. The ease of maintenance is another factor in the countertop decision-making. Be sure to check on the use and care of this countertop as some surfaces need sealing or resealing or cannot be cleaned with harsh abrasives. A little time spent on research will save you time later on the clean-up. Now is the time to make that backyard dream come true. Here are some inviting spaces to tempt you:
MOVEABLE FEASTS The backyard was converted into a whole entertaining setting with divided seating and cooking made into highly functional segments. It is perfect for three or even thirty. The surfaces were made of Silestone; the pattern is Chrome, (see detail) which does not show dirt or outdoor aftereffects. SURFACE ATTRACTION There are many choices for countertop materials, but before you make that selection, be sure to check out whether the material is deemed suitable for outdoor use. Also look at the care and maintenance of what you have chosen. The new alternatives for indoor use are equally dazzling. Here are a few new alternatives: GLASS WORK Vetrazzo recycles used bottles and jars into exquisite glass countertops, each of which is unique. PAPER CUTS Today’s high definition laminate makes a durable surface. The big news is the large scale patterns. Formica’s 180fx has five new large-scale sweeping granites and bold quartzite patterns (Dolce Vita shown) span five feet in lighter, more neutral tones. MTS Tech, Largo.

MICHAEL VON BURG DELIGHTS TAMPA BAY PATRONS AT ARMANI’S
H
igh above Tampa Bay, Michael Von Burg is sharpening his 10-inch Wusthof knife in preparation for tonight’s hungry dinner crowd. As Chef de Cuisine of Armani’s on the 14th floor of the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, Von Burg must be ready for anything, and his years of experience as well as his trusty knife shows that he is up for any challenge. Von Burg was born in Albany, New York, but relocated to the beautiful city of Tampa in 1977. In 1996, Von Burg began working with the Hyatt Hotels, in various positions. In fact, since 1999, he worked as the Sous Chef of the award-winning Oystercatchers, a sister restaurant of Armani’s which is also located within the Grand Hyatt hotel, before receiving his promotion to Chef de Cuisine at Armani’s. Von Burg’s overall food philosophy is one that new restaurant visitors and avid patrons adore. “Keep it simple, and let the flavors of the food enhance the dish,” Von Burg explains. That authentic philosophy comes in real handy at Armani’s, known for its Northern Italian cuisine. Diners love the signature antipasto bar, which allows guests to create their own first course from a selection of more than 30 items and a dedicated station offering fresh made-to-order Caesar salads. Armani’s “primi piatti” menu includes vegetarian, pasta and soup selections, while main courses range from veal scaloppini in a truffle sauce over mascarpone polenta to fresh catch of the day, Mediterranean sofrito with preserved lemon. The signature food combined with the breathtaking floor-to-ceiling views makes Armani’s a true Tampa Bay treasure. Proclaimed “extraordinary” by Zagat
94 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay
and recognized as a Distinguished Restaurant of North America, Armani’s is well-known in the Bay area for culinary excellence, and Von Burg is always looking for additional dishes to excite the palate. “At work, my favorite ingredients are house-made oven-dried tomatoes and black garlic lately. At home, hot chilies would be my favorite ingredient,” Von Burg says. And because the entire Armani’s menu is printed in-house, Von Burg has the ability to change the menu as frequently as he likes. “Doing different events or cooking classes get me looking for interesting dishes,” Von Burg explains. The simple, elegant Italian menu lets Von Burg source several local ingredients. Palmetto Creek Farms in Avon Park and the Suncoast Food Alliance are just two such local sources that Von Burg uses for his restaurant. With so many delicious dishes to choose from, it can be hard to pick. Why not try Von Burg’s idea of the perfect Armani’s dinner? Start out with the signature antipasto bar, followed by the Osso Bucco, a braised veal shank with saffron risotto. Then, wash it all down with Italy’s king of red wines, Amaroni della Valpolicella Classico. Additional customer favorites include the Vitello Scaloppini and the Diavlo del fra dei Frutti di Mare just to name a few. No matter what you select, know that Von Burg’s simple food philosophy will ring true in every dish. He will be one step closer to being known for local, organic and sustainable food with each new addition.

A SEASON OF TASTE WestShore Plaza’s parking lot might be home to some of the most luxurious vehicles in Tampa Bay, but it also boasts one stellar restaurant: Seasons 52. While the location might surprise you, the fresh aromas and figure-pleasing menu will win you over in seconds. Seasons 52 is a fresh grill and wine bar that provides guests with a fresh dining experience, allowing them to enjoy living well even when dining out. Chefs use natural cooking techniques such as wood-fire grilling, brick-oven cooking and caramelizing vegetables to let the natural flavors shine through. That combined with precise seasoning results in delicious foods under 475 calories. In fact, nothing on the menu is more than 475 calories period. Executive Chef Partner Mellissa Louty says the Bay area residents are smiling. “Our guests have welcomed our concept with open arms. They love our fresh approach to dining and superior level of service.” But this restaurant concept takes it to another level with seasonal changes. The seasonally inspired menu changes four times a year with weekly features that capture the season’s freshest ingredients. “Our changing menu affords us the luxury to offer guests something a little differ96 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

ent that they may not be able to experience at other restaurants,” Chef Louty raves. “And for many guests, our core menu items, which are standouts all year long, consistently bring them back to enjoy with a superb glass of wine from our award-winning wine list. Pairing stellar service and exceptional food and wine that is ‘right for the times’ is our recipe for success!” Patrons also enjoy additional restaurant gems. Created by Master Sommelier George Miliotes, Seasons 52’s wine list includes a selection of more 100 wines, with more than 52 offered by the glass. In addition, Seasons 52 features private dining rooms and a piano bar with live music nightly. But what guests rave about most is the fresh food with that farmer’s market feel. The food is so delicious that patrons feel like they are indulging without the extra bulge afterward. And there are so many diverse dishes to choose from. The dinner menu, which boasts more than 40 selections, includes guest favorites like the Cedar Plank Atlantic Salmon, Caramelized Sea Scallops, Garlic Chicken Flatbread, Roasted Crab-Stuffed Shrimp, Ripe Plum Tomato Flatbread, Grilled Rack of New Zealand Lamb and Char Crust Filet Mignon.
And because you won’t feel bad about indulging in a high-calorie meal, you have to try the signature mini indulgencies, individual servings of classic desserts like Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse, Key Lime Pie, Classic Red Velvet Cake, Mocha Macchiato, Belgian Chocolate Rocky Road and more. Want to take the experience up a notch? Take part in the Chef’s Table. It’s a unique, intimate experience with the chef’s amuse bouche, customized, seasonal five-course menus, and each course complemented with perfectly paired wines from the international wine list. And with the menu always changing, Chef Louty gives us the skinny on what’s to come. “During the upcoming months, we will be focusing on ingredients that are coming to their peak of freshness, such as tomatoes and corn. In addition, we will soon be enjoying Copper River Salmon, as its season is quickly approaching.” We can’t wait.

ARTICHOKE FLATBREAD Pre-heat oven to 550 degrees; Serves 2 to 4
One 9-inch flatbread dough (homemade or bought) ½ cup raw spinach, roughly chopped 6-ounce jar marinated artichokes, drained and cut ½-inch lengthwise ¼ cup red pepper, roasted, diced 1 medium red onion 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar ½ cup Italian blend cheese, shredded ¼ cup feta or goat cheese, crumbled Extra virgin olive oil for brushing Prepare pizza dough (follow pre-packaged instructions for baking). Set aside. Cut red onion in ¼-inch thick rings. Preheat sauté pan with 1 teaspoon olive oil on medium heat and cook onions for 8 minutes, stirring frequently and separating rings. Add balsamic vinegar and stir and cook for 2 minutes. Remove pan from heat and allow to cool. Place rolled-out dough on paddle and brush lightly with olive oil. Top dough with shredded cheese, distribute evenly. Sprinkle chopped spinach over cheese. Place
cut artichokes over spinach. Sprinkle with diced red pepper. Lay out onion rings around flatbread. Top with crumbled cheese. Bake 6 to 8 minutes until crispy golden brown. NOTE: If using pre-cooked dough, bake 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from oven, cut and serve hot. FLATBREAD DOUGH RECIPE 1 cup water, warm to touch (110°F to 115°F) 1 tsp brown sugar ¼ tsp active dry yeast 1½ tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 cup all-purpose flour 1½ cup wheat flour 1 tbsp salt ½ tsp pepper Mix warm water, yeast and sugar in a one-cup measure. Set aside until yeast is active and bubbles appear (about 5 minutes). Stir in oil. Combine flour, salt and pepper in another large bowl. Make a well in center. Stir in yeast mixture with wooden spoon. Stir to combine. Work dough with hands
on a floured board, knead until smooth for 8-10 minutes, adding light amount of flour as necessary to keep dough from sticking to the board and your hands. Transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and set aside in a draft-free warm place for one hour. Once doubled in size, punch dough down and cut into four equal pieces. Knead each dough piece into a tight ball on a floured board for one minute. Set on an oiled tray and refrigerate covered for 20 minutes or longer. Cooking a Flatbread: Adjust oven rack to lowest position. Place baking stone on lowest rack and warm to 500-degrees. Flatten each dough ball into a six-inch disk then roll out on a lightly floured surface to desired thickness. Transfer dough to a lightly floured wood pizza paddle. Brush with extra virgin olive oil or roasted garlic paste. Lightly top the flatbread with herbs, veggies, cheese, etc. (less is more!) Carefully slide dough off paddle onto stone. Bake until crispy golden brown (about 4 minutes). Remove flatbread from stone with paddle. Cut and enjoy. dR

2012 MERCEDES-BENZ E63 AMG WAGON
T
he high-performance 2012 MercedesBenz E63 AMG Wagon did not fail to impress us and that’s no easy feat for a five-door wagon. The powerful AMG is as cool as any station wagon can get. Featuring a 5.5-liter V-8 engine, which is also seen in the sedan, generating 518 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The AMG Performance package boosts its numbers to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, which comes from an increase in turbocharger pressure. The new engine features a number of tweaks that have reduced the E63’s fuel intake by 22 percent. A small part of this efficiency has to do with the Eco Stop-Start system. When the transmission is in Controlled Efficiency Mode and comes to a complete stop, the engine will automatically turn off to save fuel. This car has a smooth delivery of power, and, like most AMGs, you can hear a unique “bark” from the exhaust during full-throttle acceleration. The E63 comes with the AMG’s seven-speed multi-clutch

transmission. Replacement of the transmission’s torque converter with a start-up clutch offers not only versatility but also faster shift times. The 2012 E63 AMG Wagon also boasts many safety features including Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist. Active Lane Keeping alerts the driver to drifting via vibrations through the steering wheel. Active Blind Spot Assist monitors blind spots behind and beside the car. When the turn signal is activated the driver is given visual and audible warnings when another vehicle is present. If the driver ignores the warning, an intervention feature activating ESP braking which automatically corrects the car’s course of

travel keeping both the car and the driver safe. The interior of the E63 Wagon lives up to the Mercedes’ definition of luxury, sporting an Alcantara headliner, rich leather and a carbon-fiber equivalent. A multi-panel panorama sunroof opens wide enough to benefit both front and rear passengers. And details such as lighted AMG logos subtly placed in doorsills complement the interior lighting. This wagon’s combination of a powerful V8 with the roominess of a wagon makes it one of the most unique models in the Mercedes lineup. Available via special order only, this vehicle appeals to a very niche market. dR

An exterior design expert in outdoor living By Susan B. Barnes
Kim Levell
When it comes to designing your outdoor living space— whether that involves building a pool or an outdoor kitchen, or creating a gathering spot for your family—you should work with an expert who specializes in exterior design and outdoor living. Someone who really understands what it means to live in an outdoor space. When you work with Kim Levell of Levell Design, that's just what you'll do—work with an expert in resort-style landscape design and outdoor living. For more than ten years, Kim has worked with clients along the eastern seaboard and right here in the Tampa Bay area to create the outdoor living spaces of their dreams, taking into account how her clients envision living outdoors, the structure of the homes so that her designs are complementary, and ease of maintenance, leaving more time for enjoyment. Kim's work and her expertise have been featured right here in duPont REGISTRY Luxury Living in Tampa Bay, and on Martha Stewart Living Radio, The Nate Berkus Show and, locally on Daytime. "I truly believe that people should be out from behind the walls as much as possible, outside and close to nature,: says Kim. "It's when people are outside— really living outdoors—that they reconnect with themselves, and with each other." When you work with Kim, you are part of the conceptualization process. After all, who better to inform Kim on how you see yourself living the space than you? Then, Kim will intuitively implement your dreams into reality, and you'll be enjoying your new resort-style outdoor living space of your dreams in no time!
