CLYDE BUTCHER: VISIONS OF DALI’S SPAIN Explore influential images of the artists’ homeland

F

rom June 16 through November 25 visitors to The Dali Museum will be able to immerse themselves in stunning images of Dali’s homeland on a grand scale. “Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dali’s Spain” will provide a rare view of Dali’s surroundings as seen by Florida‘s greatest nature photographer, known as the Ansel Adams of Florida Landscape. Butcher’s works have become an influential part of Florida’s cultural landscape showcasing the true beauty of Floridian swamps and marsh environments. His photographs of Dali’s homeland are technically brilliant, and their large format creates a euphoric viewing experience. For Salvador Dali, the landscape of his homeland was an essential influence on his work and outlook on life. The Dali Museum sought Butcher’s talents to capture the spirit of Dali’s Mediterranean home surrounded by one of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. With a discerning and selective eye, Butcher traveled to the village of Cadaqués, where Dali spent summers while growing up. Then he visited Dali‘s house in Portlligat situated in the rugged region of Cap de Creus. These influential places appear in Dali’s art and they deliver a peek into the artist’s unique psyche. This thoughtfully curated collection features 41 photographs that take viewers on a journey through the Catalonian region. Images scan a range of sizes from an intimate two feet to a panoramic eight feet in width. The exhibit is Butcher’s first photographic exhibition of Spain, as well as the first time he has been commissioned to photograph an area that influences another artist. “We are dedicated to sharing the art life in a world of Dali with our community”, said Peter Tush, Dali Museum Curator of Education. This allows us to do just that in an immersive, yet intimate way. Butcher captures the sublime beauty of Dali’s Mediterranean world in exquisite detail and provides a portal between the two worlds of two exciting, intriguing and influential artists: Dali and Butcher. F

rom the boardroom to the hub of the art scene, Tom James and his wife Mary have ridden into their sunset years with a huge cultural achievement, opening the doors to the magnificent James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art on Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg. The 80,000-square-foot space is a time-travel capsule to the Western frontier. Enter through a sandstone sculptural exterior reminiscent of the Southwestern mesas into a soaring lobby adorned by a two-story black granite waterfall, high ceiling and streaming sunshine. Every space resonates with Southwestern ambience (think cliffs and cave dwellings) intermixed with Western nostalgia and homage to cowboy culture, especially the massive wooden saloon bar adorning the café (a19th century San Francisco hotel relic). For lovers of John Wayne and Native American culture, the 400 pieces on display are showstoppers, especially the large sculptures of horseback-riding Native Americans. “We hope that our guests will come and be taken to a place where much of our culture and heritage began,” said Tom James. “And that every visit to our collection will include education as part of the experience.” With 30,000 square feet of gallery space, the museum features works by 200+ artists, including Charles Russell, Frederic Remington, Allan Houser, Jesse Monongya, Howard Terpning, Bob Kuhn, John Coleman, Bonnie Marris, John Seerey-Lester, Tammy Garcia, Ernest C. Simmons and William Acheff. In addition to the eight galleries, the museum includes a theatre, shop, cafe catered by Datz, special events space for up to 750 people and events and programming for all ages. The special exhibition gallery will feature a premiere wildlife art show and sale when it opens in July 2018 in partnership with the Society of Animal Artists.

Vistas Gallery: Features large landscape paintings of the West’s grand vistas, setting the stage for a cultural excursion westward. Early West Gallery: Western art created from 1890 – 1950s including Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, Taos Society of Artists and more. Native Life Gallery: Scenes of 19th century Native subjects – families, cultural traditions, hunting and ceremonies as well as 20th and 21st century artists not of Native heritage. Native Artists Gallery: 20th and 21st century American Indian artists and the Jewel Box, a stunning collection of contemporary American Indian jewelry. Frontier Gallery: Showcases the 19th century westward adventures for European-Americans in the west, including a visual story of Cowboy Culture, from life in the saddle to outlaws and pioneers. New West Gallery: Features Western art influenced by art movements and popular culture. Wildlife Gallery: Wildlife depicted in their natural habitats, from grizzlies to bison and birds to big cats.

THE WELLNESS REVOLUTION – TAMPA BAY Medical innovations are changing healthcare options

Telehealth - Pediatric Care - Cancer Research

M

edical research and technology in Tampa Bay are part of the national wellness revolution that includes scientific discoveries, healthy alternatives and medical discoveries. In this month’s Health & Wellness issue, you’ll discover how marine scientists are contributing new medical ideas, as well as what you can do to live longer and stronger. Find out what’s new here.

Too busy to make it to the doctor’s office? Virtual health visits are gaining real traction. Telemedicine/telehealth systems are the diagnosis and treatment of patients from a remote location, using video with a doctor to gain a preliminary review of an immediate health program. When you or your child gets sick and you feel the need to get care right away, BayCareAnywhere™ gives you 24/7 access to a doctor so that you can get on the fast track to getting better. All you need is a smartphone, tablet or a computer with a webcam for medical consultation on a wide array of illnesses and infections. Now, Publix supermarkets and BayCare have teamed up to launch “Walk In Care” that will be available at 26 in-store Publix Pharmacy locations by the end of the year. The telehealth centers feature private rooms where shoppers can receive non-urgent medical care from board-certified physicians through teleconferencing and medical diagnostic equipment. The process is interactive and user-friendly, allowing patients to easily

enter their symptoms and use medical tools such as thermometers, otoscopes, blood pressure cuffs and high definition cameras to help doctors make an accurate diagnosis. If needed, Publix Pharmacy support staff are available to assist patients. Tampa General Hospital also offers an extensive telehealth program. Patients, using an app on their mobile devices or computers, can explain their symptoms and hear the medical opinions and advice of a board-certified doctor. Doctors will consult with patients via voice and video in real time tgh.org/services/virtual-care.

Johns Hopkins All Childrens Hospital is known for providing outstanding pediatric care for infants, children and teens as well as overall outstanding care and education. There are many innovative programs that caught dR’s attention. Pediatric Biorepository is a proactive health management tool that was established in 2013. This program assists pediatric doctors in processing, cryopreserving and storing blood, tissue and other biospecimens used for archival and hypothesis-driven clinical research, as well as maintaining health validation markers for the patient. This collaboration will make a huge difference in researchers working together beyond the walls of one institution. The result is the promotion of sample networks and enhanced research collaborations in child health that provide education and training in biorepository science with a special emphasis in pediatrics.

NEW HOPE FOR CANCER PATIENTS Moffitt Cancer Center’s compassionate quality care is enhanced by its robust portfolio of clinical trials – including focusing on all types of cancer related diseases and conditions, and many of the related side effects of treatment. As a result, Moffitt has become firmly established in the forefront of cancer research. If Moffitt’s “tumor board” believes that a patient could potentially benefit from participation in a clinical trial, they identify appropriate studies and fully educate the patient to help him or her make an informed choice about whether to enroll. For more about clinical trials, call 1-888-MOFFITT.

USF’s Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute will have a new home in Jeff Vinik’s Water Street development, but it’s already front and center in its use of technology to train health professionals. The USF Health CAMLS facility is a three-story, 90,000 square foot facility including 39 surgical stations, hybrid catheterization lab, first-of-its-kind trauma operating room, realistic human patient simulators, surgical simulators and much more. As a testimony to USF’s undergraduate and graduate scholarly research and training, USF senior chemistry major Justin Doherty will present his biomedical research at the April 2018 American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) on research he conducted at the USF Health Heart Institute conference. Doherty’s research inquiry stemmed from unmet medical needs, where effective chemotherapies for cancer patients are disrupted by treatment-induced toxicity. The goal of his research is mitigating the toxicity to keep patients on effective anticancer treatments. The new therapy he and his research colleagues chose was a Rapamycin nanoparticle, which simultaneously enhances selfdetoxification capability and inhibits inflammation. Using well-accepted research models, they introduced the nanoparticle as a pre-treatment to a broadly-used chemotherapy, Cisplatin, which, according to his early results, helped alleviate the acute kidney injury associated with Cisplatin treatment. HOW NOT TO GET HOOKED ON OPIOIDS A national addiction that requires these innovations to stop

O

pioid overdoses are now the leading cause of death in people under age 50. Tampa-based Physician Partners of America (PPOA) aims to stop it. The Tampa-based healthcare company uses interventional pain management to treat stubborn, chronic pain, so patients won’t need opioid medication. “To fight the opioid epidemic, you need to dissuade people from using them in the first place,” said Abraham Rivera, M.D., PPOA’s chief medical officer. He recently gathered fellow pain doctors from around the state to an Opioid Summit in conjunction with the Florida Academy of Pain Medicine. Rivera is a board member. Instead of opiates to dull the pain, interventional pain management uses minimally invasive procedures that pinpoint painful areas. These include nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, injections, and spinal cord stimulators. G

Tampa based Physician Partners of America Chief Medical Officer Abraham Rivera, MD and Founding partner Rodolfo Gari, MD., MBA joined forces to help combat opioid abuse.

USF COLLEGE OF MARINE SCIENCE Seaworthy marine research provides medical innovations

USF Marine Sciences - Aerial View

“A significant component is to study the diversity of phages. Some of which have not been previously described. Most of those we are finding have not been previously described. Studies like this may lead to the discovery of phages of potential interest to industry or the biomedical sciences. We can learn not only about health sciences but also about invasive species, which helps us control the gut health” said, Dr. Dishaw.

CMS & DR. JOHN PAUL’S GROUPERCHEK Dr. John Paul has been with the USF CMS since 1982 and is a Distinguished University Professor in the Biological Oceanography program. The National Academy of Inventors gave him a 2015 Excellence in Innovation Award for his "spin off" company PureMolecular, LLC, which he formed in 2014 with Robert Ulrich, CTO. The company grew out of their December 2013 patent for GrouperChek. "It’s a handheld sensor assay for the identification of grouper as a safeguard against seafood mislabeling fraud,” says Dr. Paul. “Supposedly 30% of all seafood sold in the U.S. is mislabeled as something else. For grouper, it’s usually Asian catfish. “Most microbiological determinations in hospitals are done by growing bacteria in liquid media, a process that takes about 72 hours. If you have sepsis or a severe infection, the survival rate drops by 8% per hour.” “Our assays take about 25 minutes to get a good picture of the target bacteria and also the genetic assays detecting antibiotic resistance of that particular strain” according to Dr. Paul. He has also used his GrouperChek to advance medical care. G

USF HEALTH & DR. LARRY DISHAW’S ‘SEA SQUIRTS’ Dr. Larry Dishaw is Associate Professor in the USF Department of Pediatrics, Division of Molecular Genetics, Children’s Research Institute in St. Petersburg. He is also an Affiliate Assistant Professor, USF College of Marine Sciences. He says, “I’ve collaborated with Dr. Mya Breitbart since she came to the CMS about 12 years ago and she is now a Full Professor in Biological Oceanography. We have co-mentored several students, most recently sponsoring Brittany Leigh for her post-doctoral studies at Vanderbilt University. Brittany helped pioneer a lot of our studies involving phages (viruses that infect bacteria) and their role in the gut.” Dr. Dishaw’s research focus is centered on understanding how the gut immune system of animals achieves and maintains a stable relationship with healthy microbes. “We know that abnormal interactions with gut microbes most often lead to various inflammatory conditions like intestinal colitis. We use the simple chordate model system, a Sea Squirt, to help address some of these basic questions.” To better understand the role that viruses play in the gut, the team Dr. Breitbart and Dr. Breitbart of a federal NSF grant. The Dishaw and Breitbart labs are studying how phages impact the overall ‘structure’ -- how infectious viruses can alter the composition Dr. Paul's work on assays for disease-causing bacteria is groundbreaking. of bacteria -- of the microbe obtained.

FIGHTING THYROID CANCER

Doctor advocates swift diagnosis, surgical expertise for this silent cancer

D

r. Gary Clayman moved to Tampa General Hospital two years ago, looking for a better way to treat thyroid nodules and cancers. “I wanted to create something that didn’t exist anywhere else,” said Clayman, formerly the leading head and neck thyroid surgeon at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Clayman wanted to improve the experience of most thyroid patients, who often spend months getting multiple scans and specialty appointments before getting a final diagnosis of a thyroid nodule. He wanted to compress that process from months Dr. Gary Clayman to hours. He succeeded. Patients at the TGH Thyroid & Parathyroid Institute learn their results quickly. “We have a program that doesn’t take months to figure out what to do with a thyroid nodule. Patients find out in an hour or two whether their thyroid nodule can be monitored or requires surgery” Clayman said. “Within an hour of walking in the door, your thyroid nodule is biopsied and then diagnosed by a specialist pathologist.” A faster process from diagnosis to treatment is especially needed for thyroid nodules, Clayman said, because cases of thyroid tumors of all kinds are increasing. The chances of being diagnosed with thyroid cancer has tripled in the past 30 years, according to the American Cancer Society. While rarely deadly, it is the nation’s fastest growing type of cancer. “We saw 50,000 new thyroid cancers in the U.S. in 2017, and we’re not sure why,” Clayman said. “Thyroid cancer is also increasing globally.” Nearly 75 percent of thyroid tumors are found in women, most frequently those between 30 and 50 years old. The good news? In most cases, the disease is highly curable with minimal surgery. Most patients don’t require chemotherapy or radiation, Clayman said. The butterfly-shaped thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism. When cancer occurs, it may cause

20

www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

lumps or swelling in the neck. It may lead to hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or a cough. But often, Clayman says, his patients don’t notice any symptoms. They come to him because the tumor shows up on an ultrasound. Dr. Clayman has focused on thyroid surgery for nearly 20 years. In a typical year, he performs more than 400 thyroid cancer operations. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Head and Neck Society, Dr. Clayman served as the Distinguished Chair of Head and Neck Surgery and the Chief of Head and Neck Endocrine Surgery at M.D. Anderson. He’s an advocate for establishing centers of excellence for thyroid surgery to reduce the rates of recurrence and surgical complications, such as cutting the nerves to the voice box or mistakenly removing parathyroid glands. Dr. Clayman was recruited to Tampa General by Dr. Jim Norman, who leads the hospital’s parathyroid program. “Jim convinced me that we could do the same for thyroid treatment that he’s created for parathyroid surgery,” he said. Tampa General’s thyroid program also emphasizes personal attention and individual care, Dr. Clayman said. “My patients have my phone number and everyone is treated like family,” he said. “Being connected, giving personalized attention -that translates to excellence in care.” G

KEEPING KIDS HEALTHY

Exercise, eat right, brush your teeth...repeat! Any soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head, preferable one designed specifically for infants, should be used at least once a day at bedtime. For older children, brush their teeth at least twice a day. Also, watch the number of snacks containing sugar that you give your children.

Music & Wellness:

Music is often a part of everyday life, and research shows that music affects mental, physical and emotional states. These qualities make it a valuable and effective tool in helping children and families recover health and well-being. At Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, the music therapist uses music in individual and group therapy sessions to help children and families cope with pain, stress, fear, isolation, medical procedures and being in the hospital. For adults, music can improve heart health, relieve pain and anxiety and even enhance memory, improving attention and focus.

Fit4AllKids: Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital is helping children and teens manage their weight and make healthy choices about food and exercise. The fun and interactive programs encourage children and families to do their personal best and reach their individual goals by teaching valuable culinary skills and providing the latest nutrition, fitness, and mental health. Fit4Allkids participants accomplish the following outcomes for better health: •Decrease in Body Mass Index (BMI) •Improved overall health by lowering blood pressure, which helps avoid the possible onset of heart disease. •Replacing high calorie and high fat foods with great tasting, healthy recipes that are budget friendly and easy to make. •Increased levels of fitness and activity. f you think eye strain from too many computer hours is causing your dry eyes, it's only one of the reasons that 26 million Americans suffer from this syndrome. Medications, indoor pollutants, aging, frequent flying, smoking, certain health conditions (diabetes) and contact lens wear can all contribute to dry eyes. Symptoms of dry eyes and dry eye syndrome vary. Consult your eye doctor if you are experiencing a burning sensation, itchy eyes, aching sensations, heavy, sore or fatigued eyes, blurred vision, light sensitivity and a feeling like you have something in your eye. In addition to being irritating, dry eyes can cause inflammation and (sometimes permanent) damage to the surface of the eye, even affect the outcome of Lasix or cataract surgery. Your eye physician can conduct a simple test to determine if you have dry eye. Treatments vary, from artificial tears and minor lifestyle changes (less computer time). In other cases, your eye doctor might recommend prescription eye medications and in-office procedures to help your body create and secrete more tears and to decrease eye irritation and inflammation. LOSE WEIGHT LUXURIOUSLY pexels

ccording to Michael R. Mantell, Ph.D., health isn’t a luxury. Many, however, think it requires a state-of-the-art gym with a personal trainer, well-stocked vitamin and supplement pantry, a personal chef, expensive coach and work-out clothes. While we’re at it, how about an $8,000 Ayurvedic retreat in India, a holistic weight loss program in the lush surrounds of The Santani, Sri Lanka or any of the finest top-tier weight loss retreats right here in the USA, from Pritikin in Miami and Green Mountain at Fox Run in Vermont, to the Ranch at Live Oak in Malibu and Miraval in Tucson. If luxury is the framework that you want to surround your weight loss program, it can easily be yours by answering two questions: “Who am I?” and “How do I feel?” Whatever approach you choose for your gym, fitness regime or luxurious retreat, it's important to understand how it affects your perception of yourself, self-esteem, satisfaction, confidence, security and contentment. Don't stick with something that doesn’t elevate you. Why? Luxury and weight loss are inside jobs, a state of mind. There is no one “right” diet or “right” label, but rather “the link is what you think”. For more tips, check out Dr. Mantell’s new book “The Link is What You Think” available on Amazon. G

Innovator in facial rejuvenation surgery

r. Adam J. Scheiner of Tampa has carved out a unique niche in facial rejuvenation surgery since his medical school days at the University of Pennsylvania. He says, “I always wanted to work with my hands and was fortunate that we had clinical rounds with early rotations in medical school. I had my first rotation with Dr. Allan Wulc, leading Oculoplastic surgeon focused on facial reconstructive surgery after cancer. Later, in Oklahoma City, I had my Eyelid and Laser Facial Plastic Surgery Adam J. Scheiner, M.D. Fellowship with Dr. Sterling Baker where I trained specifically with lasers, including laser techniques to help tighten skin and help improve eyelid festoons –a difficult-to-treat cosmetic eyelid condition. “This was 20 years ago and I helped patients with festoons routinely in my office. One of my colleagues was Dr. Guy Massry, an Oculoplastic surgeon, who, for his book “Master Techniques in Blepharoplasty & Periorbital Rejuvenation”, asked me to write the chapter on treating festoons. For a companion DVD, I was asked to

videotape my procedures, which I put on YouTube and it was copied around the world. This led to a lot of media attention including interviews on the Dr. Oz Show , The Doctors TV Show, Howard Stern, and print articles in the New York Post, The Boston Herald and The New York Daily News, among others. Most important, this got me worldwide attention so that now about 80% of my patients fly in from around the world for my festoon and facial rejuvenation surgery.” Dr. Scheiner’s work on festoons led to his RESET surgery for sun damage. One of his patients who had been treated with lasers to tighten the skin on the lower eyelids, came back two years later with major skin lesion eruptions all over her face due to extreme sun exposure – except where he had tightened the skin under the lids. Dr. Scheiner continues, “I was occasionally able to see early skin cancers and removed them as well -- especially significant for early precancers known as Actinic Keratosis (AKs) on their patients, as 10% of these later form Squamous Cell Carcinoma. I now call this procedure RESET for Sun Damage, and have had many dermatologists send patients to me because of the difficulty they had in continually treating AKs on their patients.” “Most of us underestimate the effect that casual sun exposure has on our body, The sun’s UV rays affect the basal cell layer of the epidermis -- the layer that leads to many skin cancers. Once I learned of my treatment’s new potential, I began using it on many patients with sun damage in an effort to RESET their skin to a younger, healthier, and more attractive state.” Dr. Scheiner offers useful advice in his book, “The True Definition of Beauty,” which uncovers the hidden language that nonverbal cues have on our appearances and how we can optimize them to better communicate with the world around us.G

AGING WISELY Talking to parents about health care concerns

hey took care of us, and now it’s our turn to help them. The first step is to communicate and organize with their help and approval. A professional healthcare manager is an effective way to begin the process with objectivity and a wealth of information. There are many professional advisors located throughout the bay area. Regarding care needs, an objective care management assessment can help. A care manager approach the client as an ally. The first step in talking to aging parents about such concerns is early involvement and regular communication. Get prepared with proper advance care/legal documents. Make sure your parents have completed paperwork with their medical providers permitting access to their health information (and/or have an updated Florida Healthcare Surrogate Designation permitting the designee to receive protected health information and help with decisions at any time). Discuss who will help and how this might work. If possible, start attending some doctor’s appointments (or hire a care manager to attend and coordinate). This helps you to better understand their health picture and spot changes early. You may notice that your aging parent needs help to live safely and thrive at home. Make note of these concerns and the areas where you think it’s most needed, talking to each parent separately. They may see things differently, so listen to them for clues as to what

worries/bothers them. Maybe you worry about Dad’s safety, but he worries about shopping and cooking meals. Mom’s healthcare may be in decline but perhaps she fears keeping up with the household tasks or wants help driving to church group at night. When talking to aging parents about assisted living, focus on the positives that can make life better based on what matters to them. For memory or cognitive issues, it is best to approach this with sensitivity and simple, concrete examples. Talk this over with your parents and their primary care physician and ask for an evaluation as a way to make sure everything is okay with a memory clinic or specialist The best medicine of all for aging wisely is the simplest. Love and respect for mom and dad, patience and doing your homework by you. l

Check caulking and be sure windows are operational, fully in the frame and no wiggle in the units. Find hurricane-proof, wind-resistant brands and hurricane shutters to protect you and your home. Making sure your home has the right windows and doors can make a big difference in a storm. For expert advice on the latest stats and information on approved windows, doors, roofing, and more call or visit West Coast Windows & Doors. (727) 545-3400 | westcoastwd.com

Iron Maiden Drummer’s Custom ‘Jaguar XJ6

LeBron James’ Car Collection

Jaguar has teamed up with Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain to create a custom ‘Greatest Hits’ Jaguar XJ6. This car was created to kick off the XJ model’s 50th-anniversary celebrations. The recreation of the XJ6 took 3,500 man hours of work to complete with over 4,000 parts that needed to be refinished, replaced or redesigned. “Creating this ‘Greatest Hits’ XJ, and the whole process of bringing someone’s automotive dream to life, has been extraordinarily rewarding for the Jaguar Classic team,” says Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic director. These include modified rear door pressings, LED headlights with ‘Halo’ daytime running lights, modern door sealing, touchscreen, re-trimmed interior, bespoke audio system, starter button, new air conditioning and remote central locking. “This is my ultimate XJ – my third, and lovingly, named ‘Johnny 3’. It has been a true labor of love between Jaguar Classic and myself,” says McBrain.

NBA MVP LeBron James is one of the most famous athletes in the world, leading the Miami Heat to multiple playoffs and championship wins in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. But, while the Heat’s star forward may spend many of his nights driving down the court, his free time is spent driving down the road in one of his hot cars. From SUVs to exotics, he has quite a collection- definitely one fit for a king. Check out the list below featuring some of James’ cars and be sure to watch him on the court in this year’s playoffs. Lou La Vie, Rich B. Caliente and Toys for Boys Miami teamed up to wrap a Lamborghini Aventador Roadster for a specific purpose. The car celebrates the launch of “Lebron 11” and the King James legacy. The wrap was designed after the liner in the “King’s Pride” Nike Lebron XI shoe, giving the already unique Aventador Roadster even more flair. Will Lebron have to wear that pair of shoes whenever he cruises in this Aventador? We certainly think so.

Designed by Dr. Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche and first presented at the 1963 IAA in Frankfurt, the 911 achieved icon status before the end of the 1960s. COOL BLUE FOR HOT SUMMER Denim fashion from head to toe

F

rom white denim to all shades of blue in vogue this season, look for party-perfect denim outfits from Michael Kors, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, and Rag & Bone. At Stein Mart, Cha Cha Vente’s pearl embellished jean skirt and top add a wow to a Rays’ outing while Mis En Chic’s romantic boho look is perfect for date night. Pair your denim cropped jean with a crisp oversized white shirt that doubles as a swimsuit cover-up. Better yet, add a denim jacket to a flouncy summery white dress. Denim does it ALL. Here’s what’s trending:

Bejeweled: Embellished denim jackets and jeans (Zara, H&M, White House/Black Market).

Bag It: The “IT” blue v-bowling bag is back this season in tribute to Gianni Versace and for sassy classy, go for Kate Spade’s and Michael Kors totes.

Step Up, Shades Out: Prada’s denim and white stripe shoes with a bow pair perfectly with almost any denim outfit.

Polish Your Look: Essie Nail’s Pret-A-Surfer shimmers with business casual Tory Burch Tilly jeans, Asos dress or Banana Republic pencil skirts. G

Turn over a new leaf at the sophisticated Wyndham Grand Resort’s Sanctuary

T

his Clearwater Beach jewel created by Drs. Pallavi and Kiran Patel is a Tampa Bay treasure, a haven for those looking to reset, renew and recharge their lives. The Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach is a luxury destination featuring panoramic views of sugar-white sand beaches, 343 sophisticated modern guestrooms with prestige amenities (Institut Karite bath products), an award-winning restaurant, fitness center, posh pool and exquisite spa sanctuary. Best of all, it’s easy access to America’s Top Beach and area attractions. This peerless resort is the inspiration of Drs. Patel, who are profiled for their philanthropic work by publisher Thomas L. duPont in this issue’s Back Page. The Patels waited 10 years to build and design the Wyndham Grand, incorporating their legacy into the names of the restaurant and other hotel monikers. “DocK’s” is named for Dr. K and the coffee shop “eSKPades” is an acronym for the

44 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Patel children. The crown jewel was named for Dr. Pallavi, and rightly so, as Pallavi means “new leaf, new life” as well as a musical style in South India. Having traveled the world for both their medical callings and global adventures, the Pallavi Luxury Spa incorporates her exquisite taste and first-class experiences at other spas and hotels into this unique retreat.

A TRANSCENDENT EXPERIENCE After your sunrise yoga and a delectable breakfast, it’s time to enjoy the magnificent Pallavi Luxury Spa known for restoring balance and bringing lasting health and beauty benefits from head-to-toe. Dr. Pallavi, is the guiding light behind all of the treatments and therapeutic rituals.

There's no better place to turn over your new leaf for an hour, a day or a week. The 5,700 sq. ft. spa offers six treatment rooms perfect for massage, facial or body treatment. The spa decor is highlighted in soothing blues, complimenting both the sky and gulf that you can see from the floor to ceiling windows. Upon arrival, you’ll be wrapped in luxury robes and invited to use the “experience” showers or steam room. Wander on to the private balcony with cool, herbal refreshment or bring your friends and family for a special occasion celebration and spa day adventure. Beyond the locker room is a gorgeous relaxation room with chaises, perfect for napping or reading a stylish magazine. But there’s more. For couples, there’s a private suite with dual massage tables, a spa tub for two and experience shower that takes relaxation to a new level, especially for the bride and groom who can enjoy bottle of bubbly during their together time. Manicures and pedicures are excellent here, using the top techniques and choicest products so you feel pampered and ready for your night on the town. For example, the Rose Garden Manicure conditions and restores, targeting age spots and dryness.

THE ART OF BEAUTIFUL SKIN CARE Body and facial treatments target every need, from anti-aging, to those for pampered gentlemen. For example, the Biotec Supercharger for Men is a de-stressing, de-aging facial harnessing an ultrasonic peel, steam and galvanic current to deliver a deep clean. Other posh services include superb facials to smooth skin and reduce the signs of ageing. The Pro-Definition Lift & Contour uses potent nutrients in plant actives found to help support the extracellular matrix for a profoundly sculpted, youthful effect. The Anti-Blemish Mattify combats oil and shine, while intuitive massage helps restore micro-circulation for a clear, brighter skin. Body treatments nourish and smooth skin. The Intensely Cleansing Salt Scrub features fragranced salt to gently remove away dead skin cells and regenerate new ones, tropically scented with lime/ginger or frangipani. The Body Nectar Nourishing Wrap uses superhydrating Monoi Oil and mood-balancing aromatic oils as you drift blissfully in your warm cocoon. There’s a Thousand Flower Detox Wrap that uses nourishing green tea and restores equilibrium.

PLAN A PARTY With a superb catering staff and masterpiece culinary team, you can celebrate a special occasion from a birthday party to a prewedding relaxation session at The Pallavi Luxury Spa. Regardless, it’s always a perfect day for a new begining and the right time to turn over a new leaf for an hour any day of the week. G

BENEDETTO’S BOUNTY

From seafood to veggies, Chef Ben cooks what he harvests

A

ccording to the Wall Street Journal, the next generation of farm-to-table restaurants are increasingly taking an active role in growing ingredients, either doing it themselves or partnering with farmers. The process takes time but chefs and restaurateurs say it allows for greater authenticity and gives them the ability to create distinctive dishes with memorable flavors. In Tampa Bay, Benedetto’s Ristorante Italiano takes the farm to fork trend to a whole new level, planting and harvesting heirloom vegetables and herbs for the restaurants award-winning dishes. Cabbage, peppers and gloriously colored veggies are the catch of the day. Chef Pumo ventured into hydroponic gardening inspired by a desire to take his passion for cooking to the next level. Housed on a handful of acres of land in East Pasco that's been in the family since the 1850's, Chef Ben and his family team, is already harvesting beautiful green peppers, red Russian kale, black pearl kale, cherry tomatoes and much more. Seasonal banana trees produce the filling for Pumo's popular banana cream cake, and fresh basil, cilantro, rosemary, lemon balm, and fresh oregano is what can be tasted throughout his sauces and makes his pesto pop. "I have to say, the experience of planting our own seeds, picking

the ripe produce, and prepping the food with our own hands to serve to our customers is what it's all about," says Pumo. "What we're doing is truly farm to table dining at its best." Owner/chef Ben Pumo also imports seafood fresh from Booth Bay Harbor Maine. Chef Ben’s steamer clams and scallops (and sometimes the bread used to serve official lobster po’boys) comes from there. He flies up every summer to his summer home to reconnect with the fishermen and to actually fish and harvest his seafood. There’s live music (jazz, piano bar) nightly and the walls are adorned with Rat Pack era photos of Frank Sinatra. From steak to pasta, bruschetta to mussels, every dish is amore! They serve wild game (elk, buffalo, antelope) and like the filet mignon, you can order with one of the sumptuous sauces such as port-wine demi-glace, traditional Oscar or mushroom brandy. The brick-oven hand-tossed pizzas feature shrimp scampi, pesto or white in addition to the traditional meat-lovers, and there’s even a gluten-free version. Veal and chicken favorites (marsala, francese or marsala) are just the tip of the iceberg; the osso bucco and chicken cacciatore are best of show. Vegetarians can dine like kings, from the veggie pizza to eggplant parmesan and spinach lasagna. G

HOT FUN IN THE SUMMER TIME Light and lively wines for every occasion

Sparkling Wine: “We all know and love Champagne. If you want to stay in the world of France, look for Cremant de Bourgogne from Chardonnay grapes. It displays beautiful crisp acidity & satisfying minerality. There is also Cremant de Loire, made with Primarily Chenin Blanc. And my personal favorite, Cremant de Limoux. Look for Blanquette de Limoux made predominately with the Mauzac grape. You’ll find notes of crisp citrus & a pleasant herbaceous note on the finish. The good news, you can find most of these wines from $10 to $25.” In The Pink: “Rosé has been an up & coming category for years. Ideal for the warmer months. Crisp & bone dry from the south of France, specifically Provence. Or come to the new world & Photos courtesy of Caretta on the Gulf experience a myriad of California Rosé crafted with everything from Sangiovese to Pinot Noir. Perfect for the “Rosé all Day” crowd. Most can be found in the $9 to $25 price range.”

veryone knows the Sea Salt Restaurant in St. Petersburg is a wine wonderland. dR asked Jackie Eash , Sommelier Beverage Director, what we should be drinking. “St. Pete weather will soon be approaching the triple digits and we will be seeking easier drinking wines that are lighter on your palate,” says the vivacious Eash. The Sea Salt’s spectacular 22-foot tall wine tower is a centerpiece of the restaurant, for the restaurant's design and extensive wine selection. The wine collection presents more than 4,000 bottles of wines in its regular inventory (especially Italy vintages, as an homage to chef). The oldest vintage dates to 1975. Here are a few of Sommelier Jackie's favorite warm weather “Patio Picks” for summer. Or ask her yourself when you Jackie Eash dine on sumptuous seafood, steak and oysters.

Cheeky Red Wines: “If you just can’t get away from those reds, give an Oregon Pinot Noir a try. Light & dry with beautiful notes of pepper, dried herbs, & red cherry, the Pinot Noirs from Oregon gently dance across the palate with their light body & zingy acidity. Delicious served around 50-55 degrees. Look in the $15 to $30 range.” For menus and more, visit seasaltstpete.com. G

dR Spirits

BOMBAY TO BOURBON

in and bourbon are this season’s IT girls in the cocktail world. Both are increasingly in demand and hard to get, especially the craft spirits. Bombay Sapphire and Hendricks Cucumber gin are still popular, but it’s the small batch gins that get all the love, especially those from Ireland and Japan since there’s less juniper available for mass quantities. Ditto bourbon, and that’s why 2018 is the season of the bourbon blend cocktail. With Kentucky's Vintage Spirits Law taking effect, it’s now legal to sell rare and antique bourbons by private individuals directly to retailers, instead of going through a distributor. Look for vintage bourbon lists and classic retro cocktails, a la Mad Men. Bourbon aficiandos can’t go wrong with batches from Buffalo Trace, Angel’s Envy, Willet Distillery, Michter’s Distillery and Peerless Distillery. Mixologist and Intermezzo owner Jarrett Sabatini knows a thing or two about bourbon, hosting bourbon tasting events (and vinyl!) at his downtown coffee and cocktail craft bar.

Locally, American Freedom Distillery showcases some fine bourbon whiskey, including Commander’s Select and dR’s favorite, Horse Soldier Bourbon, a uniquely complex, wheat-forward expression, aged a minimum of 8 years in new American Oak with a robust, powerful flavor and a long, crisp finish of dark stone fruits, vanilla and oak. americanfreedomdistillery.com G

Ride in Style. Ride with Moke.

Something Fresh. Something Classic. Something That Epitomized Out-Of-The-Box Thinking. Introducing the new Moke America: A 20th-century collectible car reinvented with 21st-century green-friendly electric power, available exclusively in the USA. The Moke (rhymes with “bloke) is far from a museum piece. Our electric car is versatile, carbon-free and efficient. This upgraded version has more—more legroom, expanded trunk space, a kickin’ sound system and all the benefits of cool, quiet electric power. The Moke stays true to its roots while keeping its headlights on the future. At Moke America, we have reengineered the entire car, while keeping Moke’s classic design and spirit alive. We made the car bigger, wider and stronger. Our car is 2,300 pounds. It's the heaviest Moke ever built. It feels sturdier than the old Mokes. We raised the wheel from a 13-inch wheel to a 14-inch wheel, so it’s taller. We redesigned the windshield so the glass is larger, stands across farther and is higher. We implemented a five step E-Dip process to control the quality of the paint. We also do undercarriage rust proofing to prevent corrosion.

Most importantly, we wanted the Moke to be green. The old Mokes had engines that were very noisy. With ours, it's silent when you drive. You can charge it with a 110-outlet. It plugs into any household outlet. Eight hours gets a full charge, and a full charge can get you almost forty miles of drive time. Moke America is a neighborhood electric vehicle. It’s a car that's driven around town to visit friends, the beach, the supermarket. And it’s better for the environment. The biggest components of the Moke are made in America, including the glass, seat belts, tires and batteries. All ten batteries are made in America. The product is assembled here on American soil. If you have a problem with the batteries, we have them right here on the shelf. It’s easy to use, easy to wash. The whole car can be hosed down, inside and out. We offer a Bimini top so you’re half outdoors, half indoors. The look and design is better than the original because it is longer, wider and closer to an American car.

VIVA LAS VEGAS

Where insiders dine, dance, play and explore

Y

ou know Las Vegas by a million names: sleepy cowboy town, America’s Monte Carlo, Sin City, Disneyland in the desert and showroom for the stars. Today’s Las Vegas is the world mecca for showgirls, show-stopping entertainment and so much more. This desert desination boasts no humidity. When Vegas heats up, the casinos cool down so a summer sojourn here is no sweat. With 42 non-stops weekly from Tampa International on Southwest, Spirit and Frontier Airlines, it’s easy to escape for a couple of days. Skip car rental hassles and newly imposed parking fees; grab Uber, Lyft or a cab.

DINING Dazzle your taste buds. Las Vegas is one long Restaurant Row. Discover Bacchanalian buffets, fine dining and cool culinary venues. New: Momofuku (Asian) and Zumu (Japanese) at hip Cosmopolitan Hotel on the Strip. Local Foodie Hotspot: Industrial chic Bandito Latin Kitchen & Cantina and Badboy chef Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen in Caesars Palace.

Bodacious Buffet: Dinner at Bellagio, 3 pm to 10 pm. For highrollers: DANCE. High energy, calorie burning nightclubbing at The Light in Mandalay Bay, TAO at the Venetian, Hyde at Bellagio, Hakkasan at MGM Grand, 10AK at the Mirage, Marquee at Cosmopolitan, Omnia at Caesars Palace. There are countless smaller local clubs but its wiser to party in style on the Strip.

Old Vegas Classic: Golden Steer Steakhouse. New Vegas: Bavette’s Steakhouse & Bar in MGM Park/ Monte Carlo. Where Celebs & Casino Chefs Go: Freddie Glussman’s Piero’s. Best of Show: Osteria Costa (Italian) in the Mirage, Eureka (American) Fremont East downtown and Sunday Sterling Champagne Brunch at Bally’s.

SIP & LISTEN Old Vegas: Elvis, Frankie, Dean, Sammy. Crooners and Comics. Nudies and naughty reviews. New Vegas: Seven thrilling Cirque du Soleil shows on the Strip. Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay, The Beatles Love at The Mirage, Mystere at Treasure Island, O at Bellagio. Plus, there’s Penn and Teller at the Rio and for pleasures of the flesh, Zumanity at New York New York. That’s just for starters. Someone and some shows perform somewhere in this town round the clock. Local Music Joints: Las Vegas is too frenetic for laid-back, mellowout, easy-listening music but here are three-off Strip stops where local insiders go: •80/20 Blues & Jazz Club on Flamingo Road which has a bit of Chicago in the desert feel. •Dispensary Lounge on E. Tropicana Avenue for jazz and blues. •Ron Decar’s Event Center downtown which includes a show and a buffet dinner. •On Strip: Art Vargas and the Swank Set. Old time Vegas big band lounge. Awesome.

During the lazy days, you’ll find beachy pastimes like swimming, sunning and swimwear shopping with the occasional iced latte in the morning replaced by a creamy dreamy boat drink when the sun goes down. It’s 5:00 somewhere here all day, all night.

JAVA JOINTS – MADEIRA BEACH

Maderia Beach

Waking up to Coffee Grounds’ Kahwa cold brew or smoothie is nothing short of miraculous. The alfresco patio next to Middle Grounds gives you a Gulf glimpse and there’s a full liquor bar to spike that caramel latte. The Sweet Brewnette’s kitschy décor, fresh squeezed OJ and veggie breakfast is a healthy start. Craft Café just opened on Central Avenue near O’Bistro, and the coffeehouse’s gluten-free fare, especially the peach turnover and chicken breast avocado cream sandwich will make you swoon.

DINING OUT – MADEIRA BEACH For some of the best sandwiches, burgers and Bloody Mary’s, stop in at the sporty Brown Boxer Pub & Grille with live music, pool and specials. For a special occasion, enjoy upscale Italian at Mario’s Ristorante. Best spots for seafood are Dockside Dave’s, known for its grouper and the Conch Republic Grill. Slyce Madeira Beach’s gourmet pizza and bruschetta and Angry Pepper Waterside’s craft beers, Sunday Bloody Mary bar and smoked brisket or chicken accessed by car or boat make every Sunday funday.

DINING OUT – TREASURE ISLAND Middle Grounds Grill

From gourmet burgers to old world Italian, it’s a diner’s delight. BRGR Kitchen & Bar serves up designer grub and hand-crafted cocktails as does Middle Grounds Grill. For old world Italian pasta and veal manga at Gigi’s. The Pearl’s sushi and Mediterranean specials, enhanced by a boutique wine list, is a favorite as is the margarita and fajitas at VIP Lounge and Mexican Restaurant. Other good choices as you round the bend past Sunset Beach are The Taco Bus and Sea Hag’s, whose view, outdoor patio, sports bar action and evening live music can’t be beat.

DINING OUT – SAINT PETERSBURG

As you drive off the beach from Treasure Island and down Central Avenue into St. Pete, you’ll encounter Mexican joints, pizza pubs, organic markets, vintage shops (home décor/fashion) and the eclectic freeFall Theatre, now showing E.M. Forster's “The Machine Stops” thru May 27. Next door is the garden and The Reading Room’s vegan, charcuterie, seafood and artisan dishes served up in an intimate, modern setting with a plethora of boutique beers and local crafts, inspired and exquisite.

by Nanette Wiser PARTY SPOTS - BEACHES The ultimate beach party is at Caddy’s on Treasure Island’s Sunset Beach, a hippie dippie peninsula that also features Ka’ Tiki, one of the best live blues music joints in town. Enjoy a cabana for two, a strawberry daiquiri and for singles, meet your new squeeze. For a craft beer, stop in at Treasure Island’s local dive the R Bar, famous for it’s all-you-can-eat crab night and strong drinks. The tiki huts at the Bilmar Resort and Thunderbird often feature music, served with loopy tropical drinks and local people-watching as folks cruise on their bikes or skateboards along the boardwalk to Bamboo Beach Bar & Grill.

BREWERIES - ON THE BEACH Mad Beach Craft Brewing upstairs in John’s Pass serves some of the best local beers, from stouts to key lime cider brewed onsite as well as other local crafts. It’s family-friendly with lots to do (dartboards, pool tables, air hockey, large-screen TVs) and amazing food (tater tots poutine, pulled-pork sliders). Sea Dog Brewing Company near Sunset Beach features their award-winning Shipyard crafts, best paired with their pub burger, lobster bisque or BLT chopped salad.

NIGHTLIFE - BEACH SIDE VENUES In addition to many of the restaurants and hotels that feature live music and dancing, you can always count on a raucous night out when you visit Ricki T’s, Captain Bill’s, Daiquiri Shak Raw Bar & Grill or Gator’s. For jazz and sophisticated music, count on Middle Grounds Grill.

SHOPPING - JOHN’S PASS VILLAGE & BOARDWALK There are some eclectic shops in both Madeira Beach and Treasure Island (for wicker, shells, vintage, swimwear and surf gear) but the best shopping is here. You can enjoy a meal at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Hooters, Waltz Fish Shack or The Hut, nibble ice cream, grab the ferry, play video/arcade games, buy cigars and sample beef jerky. For jewelry and fashion favorites, The Bronze Lady and The Landing are spectacular, especially BL’s Pandora and flip flop collectibles. Lori’s Soaps and Sponges, The Spice & Tea Exchange, Windworks’ kites and the multiple t-shirt and beachwear apparel shops up and down the wooden boardwalk make this a fun half-day jaunt.

John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk

SPORTS & RECREATION In addition to biking the boardwalk, boat ramps, marinas, fishing and watersports, the Treasure Bay Golf and Tennis Center is one of the neighborhood’s best kept secrets. Five Dollar Mondays are back this May; you can play a 9-hole round of golfthe course is open 8 am to 8 pm Friday-Sunday There’s a Pirate Ship Playground, eight clay tennis courts and good golf overlooking Boca Ciega Bay. At Roselli Park in Treasure Island’s Isle of Capri, large shady oaks surround the playground and the Bill Lyons Little League Ball Field. There are free tennis courts, shuffleboard courts, a horseshoe pit, a basketball hoop, picnic tables and more. In Madeira Beach near the Library and City Hall, there are softball fields, fitness classes and summer concerts, plus amazing views. G

BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY

n May 27th, The Capitol Theatre presents GRAMMY® nominated, multi-platinum selling band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on Sunday, May 27 at 8 pm. After 25 years, 11 records, over 2800 live shows and countless appearances in film and television, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is showing no signs of slowing down and is looking forward to celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The band’s unique take on American swing and jazz music has thrilled audiences around the world with hit songs like I Wanna Be Like You, Mr. Pinstripe Suit, Why Me, You & Me & The Bottle Makes 3 Tonight and more. Their latest album release, Louie, Louie, Louie is a rousing celebration of music legends Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and Louis Prima. These remarkable artists revolutionized American music and popular culture and set the standard for what great entertainment and artistic expression could be. Bandleader and vocalist Scotty Morris says, “We really want people to know about these great men that have so deeply influenced us, and perhaps help spark a new creative interest in them and their music. It's important to educate people — if artists don't continue to spread the word, this music is going to go away and that's something we can't afford to have happen.” atthecap.com G

atch the legendary songwriter, recording artist and performer Paul Simon’s Farewell Tour, at Amalie Arena on September 7, 8:00 PM. Says Simon about this farewell tour, “I’ve often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I'd consider bringing my performing career to a natural end. Now I know: it feels a little unsettling, a touch exhilarating and something of a relief. I love making music, my voice is still strong, and my band is a tight, extraordinary group of gifted musicians. I think about music constantly. I am very grateful for a fulfilling career and, of course, most of all to the audiences who heard something in my music that touched their hearts.” Having created a distinctive and beloved body of work that includes 13 studio albums, plus another five studio albums as half of Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon is the recipient of 16 Grammy Awards, three of which—Bridge over Troubled Water, Still Crazy after All These Years, and Graceland. They were Album of the Year honorees. In 2003, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in Simon & Garfunkel and has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, with 29 Top 40 singles in the U.S. including “Loves Me Like A Rock,” “Mother and Child Reunion,” “Late In The Evening,” “You Can Call Me Al” and many others. When he was with Simon & Garfunkel, he wrote and performed the #1 singles, “The Sound of Silence,” “Mrs. Robinson,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and other timeless hits. G

“SWING TRIO” A modern jass night headlines The Palladium June schedule

A

modern jazz night at The Palladium you won’t want to miss, acclaimed guitarist Nate Najar, Dan Levinson and Tommy Cecil deliver melody, rhythm and harmony both inventive and ingenious. In 2010, Najar releases "Groove Me" on Woodward Avenue Records collaborating with the Tony Award winning vocalist Melba Moore and the album was in the Billboard Jazz Top 10 chart. A St. Petersburg, FL native who began playing guitar at eight, he considers Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery and Charlie Byrd his primary influences, Najar’s full length recordings on Candid Records – including 2012’s Blues For Night People. The Nate Najar Trio Remembers Charlie Byrd – earned him accolades from critics and influential jazz voices alike. Other recent recordings include 2014’s “Aquarela Do Brasil” and the swinging “This is Nate Najar” (2016). 2017’s “Christmas In December” marked Nate’s return to Woodward Avenue Records. Dan Levinson played with Mel Tormé, Wynton Marsalis and Dick Hyman. Originally from Los Angeles, Dan has been based in New York since 1983, although his busy schedule often takes him around the world including performing in Brazil with filmmaker Woody Allen's band. Since 1993 he has been a member of Vince Giordano's Nighthawks, New York's preeminent 1920’s orchestra, with whom he has appeared at Carnegie Hall, on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and has recorded 100+ CDs. Tommy Cecil, active in the Washington, DC jazz scene since 1976, he has established himself as one of the most in-demand players in the area. Tommy has worked with Mose Allison, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Henderson, and many other star artists. G

DR. KIRAN AND DR. PALLAVI PATEL Making Tampa Bay and the World a Better Place

T

his month we seek to acknowledge the phenomenal accomplishments and generous contributions of Doctor Kiran and Doctor Pallavi Patel. “Dr. K” and “Dr. P” (their affectionate nicknames) met in medical school in India. After graduation, they both began practicing medicine in Zambia. But after a short time they left for America, landing in our country on Thanksgiving Day 1976. A lot has transpired since then and one can only conclude that the best is yet to come. After spending the morning visiting with the Doctors at their private retreat in the Wyndham Grand on Clearwater Beach, I quickly realized that covering the “Patel Philanthropy Story” would take volumes rather than one page. So, here are a few of the highlights of our conversation. First, when they came to America on Thanksgiving Day, the significance has not been forgotten. Give back often and as much as you are able. So far (the number keeps growing). The Patel’s have given in excess of $240 million to support the arts, education and health care in Florida. Another Patel guideline, “Education is the best gift, good health is the second.” The Patel’s have made their gifts with a keen eye on the “multiplier effect”. Let me explain: •Doctor Kiran C. Patel Charter School at University of South Florida and the Dr. Pallavi Patel Pediatric Care Center at the school •The Doctor Pallavi Patel Performing Arts Conservatory at The Straz Center for Performing Arts •A heart research institute at Tampa General Hospital •The Doctor Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions – University of South Florida •The Patel College of Global Sustainability – University of South Florida •Support for early learning, athletics, and computer sciences at needy schools in Tampa AND •Several gift to form the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Sciences at Nova Southeastern University in Clearwater. The Patel’s have not limited their generosity to Florida. They have helped restore villages in India, established medical schools in Zambia and countless other gifts that could fill volumes of information.

96

www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Each of their goals that have been targeted to education and health care, have an overriding focus on how to make the “gift” beneficial over and over and over. Hence, the multiplier effect. The Patel Philanthropy Story has principles grounded in expanding the reach of basic education and health services, bringing the costs down and making delivery more efficient. Thereby, effecting more individuals more often. The most recent and perhaps most notable gift is the funding of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University. This partnering between the Patel’s vision for multiplying the number of health practitioners and Nova Southeastern’s established administrative excellence will generate hundreds of doctors and other health care professionals that will treat thousands of people not only in Florida but around the world. Hence, the multiplier effect of The Patel Philanthropy Story. When Dr. K says he is blessed to have the resources to provide gifts that have the potential to impact many, many people, he is partly correct. It is all of us who are blessed to have The Patel Philanthropy Story impact all of us in the Bay Area and around the world. The lesson learned here is to “give back often and as much as you are able” and to do so with an eye on positively effecting as many human beings as possible. Thank you Dr. K and Dr. P. G
