FROM THE PUBLISHER Design & Lighting Specialists
November/December 2016 Dear Readers, As we start the holiday season, life seems to accelerate. Balancing events of the season with family gatherings, and holiday gift buying can be a great task in itself. In this issue, we invite you to enjoy holiday traditions, both old and new. For the Holiday Road Trip, we have compiled a list of Tampa Bay’s Best Dressed Outdoor Holiday Light displays that can be enjoyed by all ages. Our annual dR Holiday Gift Guide has all kinds of great gift ideas for that special person in your life. Holidays seem to be wrapped around our home and family table. Why not make sure your table center pieces and holiday décor make a statement. Our dR Home Magnificent Holiday Décor and Centerpieces display holiday themes with traditional colors and the use of local greenery. And a special thanks to the Potting Shed for our fabulous and festive holiday arrangement featured on our cover. The Potting Shed has been a central part of all of Tampa Bay’s most beautifully decorated celebrations since 1975. Located at 4127 S. MacDill Avenue in Tampa, they deliver almost anywhere for almost any occasion. Need that extra special touch? Call Sharon Smith at 813-8311969. Tell her I sent you, and thanks to Sharon for making our Holiday Issue even more special. For those hosting the holiday festivities, let dR Spirits lead the way with unique recipes for handcrafted holiday cocktails. Or, let us suggest a special champagne that will help you celebrate the occasion.
LANDSCAPE LIGHTING | WATERFRONT LIGHTING OUTDOOR AUDIO | EXTERIOR DESIGN
If you are looking for adventure this holiday, dR Auto features the Land Rover Experience Driving School which provides participants with jawdropping opportunities to see just how incredibly capable Sport Utility Vehicles have become. The vast majority of all Sport Utility Vehicles are never tested to anywhere near their true off-roading capabilities. And, last but not least, let us not leave out “The Gift of Giving”. Our hero, role model and community leader featured in our BACK PAGE article is Vincent Jackson, #83 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His “Jackson In Action 83 Foundation” (website: www. jacksoninaction83.org) is dedicated to “provide support for military families focusing on the educational, emotional, and physical health of children.” We focus our BACK PAGE article on Vincent because he is personally involved in giving to others. Growing up in a military family, Vincent is intimately connected with the strengths and challenges that face our armed services families. We congratulate him on his efforts and ask all of you to follow his “Gift of Giving” example. Many of us here in the Tampa Bay area are blessed, and I ask that you share your blessings with someone in need. Here at duPont REGISTRYTM , we participate in the Marine Corp Toys for Tots Campaign in hopes that we can create some smiles for children in our area whose holidays might have been a little bit empty. Join us, and Vincent Jackson, in the tradition of “The Gift of Giving”. Enjoy!

INTRODUCING 210 BRIGHTWATERS BLVD NE St. Petersburg, Florida
Revisit an era when pride of craftsmanship and architectural design were respected and valued; so much so that the original owners of 210 Brightwaters Blvd in St. Petersburg, on desirable Snell Isle, commissioned Russell Pancoast, an internationally renowned architect, to design the home. Pancoast’s vision and insight have withstood the test of time and the exceptional design and character of this home make it as desirable today as it was in 1938 with its focus on light, airiness and exceptional architectural details. The masterful renovation has retained Pancoast’s vision while giving the home all the modern conveniences for today’s busy life style. The home offers fabulous views of Coffee Pot Bayou as well as a deep water dock making access to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico ideal for any size vessel while the curved dining room with walls of windows will make your guest feel as if they are dining in an observatory overlooking the homes private, expansive pool surrounded by mature beautifully manicured gardens. The impressive formal living room is graced with a fireplace, a cathedral cove ceiling accented with wooden beams, polished marble floors and water views of Coffee Pot Bayou. BY JANAN TALAFER Sparkling accents, twinkling lights, fragrant candles and lots of greenery help set the scene for the holidays, creating that special magic that makes the home feel so festive and inviting. Traditions and ritual help create meaning in our lives, and Christmas is the best time of year to indulge.

Whether you enjoy taking charge of the holiday decorating yourself, or prefer to leave the creativity to the experts, don’t overlook the showstopping power of a beautifully designed holiday centerpiece for your dining room table or sideboard and for the main entryway to your home. Eclectic Elegance Sharon Smith of The Potting Shed enjoys creating an elegant, eclectic design that blends dry and fresh elements for an interesting look. She starts with a beautiful container, preferably something that a client brings in, such as a silver antique piece. Then she begins building the design using green and white as the primary colors, with accents of red using berries and roses. “We like to use the largest oriental white lilies we can find, mixed with Dendrobium orchids, huge open roses and green cymbidium orchids for a pop of color, especially the ones with the cabernet throats,” says Smith. “We’ll add to that with branches, pods, Florida cedar and magnolia leaves, both dried and fresh. Plus, some pine cones, perhaps painted silver.” Smith also loves using hydrangeas and peonies. Her signature design look is the English garden. Cheryl Pacheco at Carlson-Wildwood Florists discourages clients from having one large, tall arrangement in the middle of the table, which can block guests’ view and make conversation more difficult. Instead, she suggests stretching a low, horizontal row of evergreens, short candleholders and shiny ornaments down the whole length of a large table for a beautiful effect. She also recommends creating a delightful tiny centerpiece at each place setting, such as a clear, glass Christmas ornament filled with a single eyecatching flower and a sprig of greens. To keep the ornament from rolling and tipping over, place it inside a little nest make with evergreens or even stems of rosemary. Holiday Greenery a Must Pacheco says that for her, Christmas is not about flowers; it’s about the greens. “They are so fragrant and you just can’t have too many of them,” says Pacheco. In addition to using boughs from the traditional pine, cedar and other fir trees, she likes the southern trees found right in our backyard, such as the Magnolia, which has large glossy, dark green leaves, and the invasive Brazilian pepper with its bright red berries – a good substitute for holly. Pacheco also encourages clients to consider making a family heirloom part of their holiday decor. “If someone has a beautiful china or crystal bowl or other sentimental piece, we can turn it into an amazing centerpiece,” she says. “We can line the item for protection and then fill it with flowers and greenery, making it part of the tradition.” Continued on the next page.

HOME Natural & Organic Darin Bahl of Tailored Twig has a well-deserved reputation for creating tablescapes and centerpieces that have an eclectic, natural and organic feel. To achieve that look for the holidays, he might incorporate berries, seedpods, chestnuts and cinnamon sticks into a festive garland of Magnolia leaves, with accents of pine and other evergreen boughs. To add color and texture, he’ll use Christmas ornaments and fabric bows, as well as the bright red berries of the Brazilian pepper, which he calls the Florida “mistletoe.” Lighting is another important consideration. “The holiday decorations might be beautiful, but without illumination you won’t get the full effect,” says Bahl. In addition to candles, Bahl recommends lanterns, which come in a variety of styles, from antique gold, platinum or brass too stained glass or even streamlined and contemporary.
As often as possible, he turns to local craftsman to design and create oneof-a-kind pieces to add to his floral designs. But he also attends the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market for inspiration. “The show is in January, so the hunt for the next Christmas season begins early, literally right after the last holiday season has ended. We start gathering everything over the summer, so by the fall we are ready to go.” While Bahl’s floral creations often have an exotic tropic look, during the holidays he likes to stay traditional. “Tropical colors and designs just don’t say Christmas for me. I find that most of my clients want to be traditional – they like wrapping their home up in the warm glow of the season.” GG

BY SUSAN B. BARNES
NEW YEAR - NEW YOU The holiday season is in full swing, which means festive dinners with family and friends, toasting to the holidays and the New Year, and overindulgence all around. Though it’s easy to get wrapped up in the holidays, oftentimes all of the fun and festivities can wreak havoc on our waistlines. Fortunately, there is a non-surgical weight loss procedure that can help you stay on track when nibbling from endless buffets and sipping from bottomless bottles of wine. ReShape is a new, FDA-approved approach to weight loss that was specially-designed for people who have a lower BMI (between 30 and 40), with big results. Dr. Jatin Bidani, a board certified gastroenterologist with nearly 30 years of experience, is the only doctor in the Tampa Bayarea who performs the ReShape procedure. During an out-patient procedure of just about 15 to 20 minutes, Dr. Bidani will gently insert two connected balloons endoscopically. When they are in place, the balloons are inflated, resulting in the sensation of patients feeling full and satiated. Six months after the balloons are initially placed, they’re removed, but that doesn’t mean the treatment is over. Following the procedure, patients have the full support not only of Dr. Bidani and his team, but complimentary access to a food coach and dietitian for a full year as well. In addition, there is the online portal that patients can access to not only track their progress in regards to exercise and food consumption, but interact with online support groups, too. What’s more, ReShape patients continue to eat the foods that they enjoy, just in smaller portions.
Dr. Bidani
“We keep in close contact with our patients,” said Dr. Bidani. “After the procedure, (with the balloons) they feel full and notice that with the dietary and food coaching, they see significant weight loss. We’re making lifestyle modifications, and our patients not only are losing weight, but they’re keeping it off.” In the six months Dr. Bidani has been offering the ReShape procedure, he has seen his patients’ successes: his first patient lost 35 pounds in four months, while another went from a 46-inch waist to a 36-inch waist, and yet another dropped from a size 22W to 18 in just six weeks. To introduce Tampa Bay-area residents to ReShape, Dr. Bidani is offering complimentary office consultations through the end of the year, “to promote good health.” “Why not be lean for 2017,” he asks. All services are inspired by the ZO® Skin Health Circle™, which takes into account Prevention, Therapy, Daily Skincare and Maintenance, with products that are formulated and developed to do just that.
A Marriage Made In Science and Aesthetics Dr. Obagi and Drehsen share a passion for skin health and want to help people look younger indefinitely. Both believe that healthy skin is naturally smooth, strong, firm, even toned, hydrated and free of disease. Dr. Drehsen liked the ZO® system because it works for every skin type and ethnic group as well as for those with no medispa procedure, minimally invasive cosmetic procedure or plastic surgery. “It’s like washing and waxing your car to maintain a facelift. If the skin is not maintained, invigorated and renewed, it no longer glows as in the beginning,” says Dr. Drehsen, noting that the ravages of makeup also affect skin health as does aging and too much Florida sun. Adds Dr. Obagi: “We are serving and treating a growing number of men who are increasingly looking for healthy skin and looking for anti-aging solutions.” Every treatment at the new ZO Skin Centre® delivers visible improvements, customized for a guest’s specific skincare needs and performed by highly skilled aestheticians trained in the principles, protocols and methods of Dr. Zein Obagi. Who Is Dr. Obagi? A board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Obagi is a world-renowned skincare expert, award-winning inventor, educator and author. An inventor of skin health since 1988, Dr. Obagi explains what makes ZO® products different than anything currently on the market. “Many other products on the market are outdated. We have discovered within the last 10 years the negative effects of inflammation and glycation, the need to enhance skin strength and increase the skin’s ability to resist negative effects of many internal and external factors, and the need to enhance our skin’s ability to repair damaged skin DNA.” With ZO® products, Dr. Obagi has incorporated all of the agents and ingredients necessary to achieve the skin rejuvenation results addressing disease-specific systems through well-defined and easy-to-follow protocols while restoring skin health at the same time. The result: a more flexible product line, better treatment and happier patients. Dr. Obagi chose Clinique of Plastic Surgery and Dr. Drehsen because of his excellent reputation; his talent and experience in the field of plastic and 62

Dr. Obagi, board-certified dermatologist reconstructive surgery; and his commitment to skin health.
Expert Analysis, Personalized Products and Services Physicians at each ZO Skin Centres® begin their relationships with patients by conducting 45-minute skin evaluations, looking at the skin on the face, neck, scalp, ears, décolleté, back and hands. A personalized skin-care program is developed to address any acne, melasma, sun damage, skin laxity, volume loss, wrinkles or related concerns. Follow-up assessments evaluate the progress of the guest’s skin-care programs. It’s all about prevention and averting skin ailments before they occur. Says Dr. Obagi: “We can prevent sun damage, aging, pigmentation and acne if we start delivering to the skin formulations that will help the skin work properly. At the ZO Skin Centre®, we are able to diagnose because of our skin analysis, even identifying medical conditions patients may not be aware of.” The Centre also offers injectables, facials, peels and other cosmetic procedures, but it’s more than a typical medi-spa. The goal is to create a program to fight problems at every age for a lifetime of skin health customized for individual needs. Dr. Drehsen agrees. “This system is heavily weighted to prevention and to maintaining skin in better condition. It’s more than a product line; it’s a system of restoration and rejuvenation from the inside out.” GG Photos courtesy of ZO Skin Health, Inc.

DRIVING WAY OFF-ROAD AT THE LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE
Photos courtesy of Michael Taylor
The Land Rover Experience Driving School provides participants with jaw-dropping opportunities to see just how incredibly capable Sport Utility Vehicles have become. The vast majority of all Sport Utility Vehicles are never tested to anywhere near their true off-roading capabilities. SUV’s are now more sophisticated and capable than ever thanks to improvements in engineering, technology and driver aids. Fewer vehicles are more capable off road than those from Land Rover, who have specialized in building four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles since 1948. Venue There are 32 Land Rover Experience centres around the world with locations in China, Russia, the Middle East, South Africa, Europe, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom. There are four centres in North America with three in the United States, in California, North Carolina and Vermont, and only one in Canada, in Montebello, Quebec, which is about 90-minutes west of Montreal. The Land Rover Experience has been operating out of their own facility on the grounds of the Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello for the past 12 years. Once participants have signed in, they climb aboard their Land Rover of choice, and drive about 10 minutes away to Kenauk Nature 64

BY MICHAEL TAYLOR They follow the Tread Lightly! procedures. Tread Lightly! is a not for profit organization whose goal is to “balance the needs of the people who enjoy outdoor recreation with our need to maintain healthy ecosystems and thriving populations of fish and wildlife”. Vehicles Participants of the Land Rover Experience have access to the full range of current Land Rover models including the Discovery Sport (which starts at $37,695), Range Rover Evoque (starting at $41,800), Land Rover LR4 (starting at $50,900), Range Rover Sport (starting at $64,950) to ultimate off roader the Range Rover which starts at $84,950 and can climb to more than $225,000 for the long wheel base SV Autobiography. Instructors Dominique Rochette has been involved in the Land Rover Experience since it opened in Montebello in March 2004. He started as a driving instructor and eventually moved behind the desk and oversees the operation of the facility. Our in-car driving instructor for the day was JeanBenoit Cousin. He moved from Quebec City to Montebello for just one summer of instructing. “I liked working here so much I haven’t left and I’ve been doing this fulltime for the past 10 years.” Said Cousin. “Montebello is now my home”.
The Experience The Land Rover Experience can accommodate any experience level, from beginner on up, and is designed to increase one’s knowledge and ability of off road driving. First-time participants can try experiences ranging from 1 hour up to 3 full days, with prices ranging from $150 per hour to $1,200 per day, in Canadian currency (approximately $115 and $915 US dollars, respectively). Buyers of Land Rover vehicles in Canada are entitled to participate in a 3-hour Land Rover Experience free of charge. Corporate groups can also participate, with a minimum of 6 participants. Team Building Group Activities include events entitled Mission Impossible, Geo-Cache Scavenger Hunt and Blind Drive, and yes, you drive a Land Rover blind folded! Full days begin with lessons on off-road obstacles including ditch crossings, log crossings, and vehicle controls and gradually move onto more advanced trails including steep hill accents and docents on a variety of surfaces, side-tilts, rock crawls, sand dunes and deep water. Each Full Day Experience includes a picnic lunch, a Land Rover Experience gift, and a personalized framed certificate of completion. Continued on the next page

AUTO Our Experience We spent the day driving an extremely capable Range Rover Sport. The following are just some of the systems and technology available on today’s Land Rovers: Adaptive Dynamics delivers balance between ride and control by offering continuously variable damper settings, monitoring vehicle’s movements up to 500 times per second. All Terrain Progress Control can be set to speeds between 1 mph and 30 mph and maintain that speed without touching the accelerator enabling you to concentrate on steering through obstacles. Dynamic Response is a two-channel system which can control the front and rear axles independently allowing it to be tuned to deliver increased low-speed agility and enhanced stability at high speed. Dynamic Stability Control detects understeer and adjusts the brakes and engine power accordingly. Low-Traction Launch allows the driver to pull away smoothly even on challenging low-friction surfaces such as ice, snow and sand Terrain Response 2 monitors the road or off-road surfaces and automatically selects the best possible driving mode by altering the chassis and powertrain settings. Electronic Air Suspension System results in a comfortable on-road ride and automatically switches between two ride heights when navigating off-road.
cornering by monitoring and balancing the distribution of torque between the wheels to improve grip and steering both on and off-road. Twin-Speed Transfer Box incorporates high and low range gears. Low range ensures a controlled descent on off-road terrain, and high range is for driving on the road. Initially our driving instructor demonstrated some of the vehicles settings and took us slowly though the initial obstacles, then it was our turn to take the wheel. One really must experience driving a $100,000+ vehicle down an unimaginably steep uneven rock surface without putting your foot on the brake or accelerator pedal, and other than the steering, letting the vehicle do all of the work. Equally amazing is driving up a very steep uneven tilted rock face, while corning, and keeping constant pressure on the throttle and letting the drivetrain determine exactly which wheel or wheels have traction, while smoothly transferring power back and forth to the four corners of the car. Having an experienced instructor sitting in the seat next to you is a must the first time one attempts such off-road maneuvers. Proof positive of how capable these SUV’s have become is the fact that they have to make the course tougher and tougher with each generation of vehicle If you’re looking for a great day out in the wilderness, and have the patience to slowly navigate through seemingly unnavigable terrain, book some time at the Land Rover Experience. You will be amazed at what you, and a capable Sport Utility Vehicle can accomplish together. GG

Cheers and Enjoy from everyone at the duPont REGISTRY and Tampa Bay’s Fine Wine Guide! Bollinger Brut Special Cuvee A golden color, distinctive of black grape varieties. Very fine bubbles. On the nose, it has a beautiful aromatic complexity, ripe fruit and spicy aromas, with hints of roasted apples, apple compote and peaches. On the palate, there is a subtle combination of structure, length and vivacity. The bubbles are like velvet. Flavors of pear, brioche and spicy aromas, notes of fresh walnut. Pair with all fish, especially sushi and sashimi, shellfish such as shrimp, prawns, crayfish and grilled lobster, poultry and white meat, cashews, parmesan or prosciutto. | $80 Delamotte The balance between the dominant Pinot Noir and the smaller percentage of Chardonnay in the Delamotte Rosé gives this wine its beautiful pale rose color. The wine has tiny bubbles with strong red fruit aromas and flavors. It is vivacious, supple and round with a hint of acidity. It makes a wonderful aperitif, as well as a good companion to poultry dishes or red fruit desserts. | $90 68

BY KAREN AUNGST Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve A deep golden robe. Delicate vivacious and long-lasting bubbles, are the result of more than 36 months of ageing in chalk cellars. With 40% of reserve wines (the maximum possible amount), the blend offers a complex, voluptuous nose with notes of freshly baked brioche and the richness of roasted coffee beans. A precise selection of wines, purposely limited to 60 crus, ensures the Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve a deliciously sophisticated harmony. An opulent selection of ripe, sundrenched fruits such as mango, apricot and greengage plum combines with dried fruits, pistachio and almond. The texture is reminiscent of a crisp layer of nougatine on a velvety cream pastry filled with plump red plums and ripe cherries. The reserve wines, some dating back ten years give the wine lushness. The depth of the thousand-year old chalk quarries where the wine matures offer a touch of praline along with notes of amber and vanilla. | $70 GG

BY NANETTE WISER Want to know why Rudolph’s nose was really red? Too many holiday cocktails! From frozen hot chocolate to brandy-infused candy cane eggnog, cranberry orange cinnamon margaritas to cranberry/rosemary simple syrup Cosmos, the sips of the season are merry and bright. Incorporate seasonal flavors (ginger, cranberry, peppermint, orange spice, cardamom, cinnamon) into your holiday cocktail menu. After all, who can resist a white chocolate peppermint latte with rum? Certainly not Santa, who already has a cookie issue! We’ve asked some of our best mixologists and spirit mongers to share their favorite seasonal sips. Datz Restaurant Group: Suzanne and Roger Perry always have something festive in their shaker, and this Sugar Plum cocktail dancing in their heads is as light and whimsical as their restaurant dishes and drinks. (Datz, Roux, Dough, Dr. BBQ). Sugar Plum Fairy: 1.5 oz Damrak Gin, 1⁄2 oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur, 3 dashes of Fee Brothers Plum Bitters, sugar, lemon and shake. Add 2 black cherries, a mint sprig and dust with powdered sugar like snowflakes. edison food+drink lab: Enjoy their savory Royal Tannenbaum, made with The Botanist gin, lemon juice, Boomsma Cloosterbitter, Fernet-Branca, simple syrup, egg white, and Bittermens ‘Boston Bittahs’. Fleming Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar: Known for their gourmet fare and boutique wines, Fleming’s celebratory cocktails include a French 75 (Plymouth gin, citrusy Mas Fi cava) and a French Twist Lemonade (Svedka vodka, St. Germain Elderflower liqueur, fresh-squeezed lemonade). The Mill: Introducing gourmet gluten-free plus other culinary delights, the robust cocktail menu features a classic Sazerac perfect for the season, made with The Mill Single Barrel Whistle Pig 10 year Rye, De Luze VSOP Cognac, Proprietary Bitters Blend, Demerara Sugar Cube and Absinthe Rinse. Nueva Cantina: Louie Spetrini and his merry margarita elves in downtown St. Pete know a thing or two about Festivus, hence their Cranberry Margarita. In a shaker add crushed ice, 1 1⁄2 ounces of tequila, 1/2 ounce of Grand Marnier, 2 ounces of cranberry puree and shake to mix. Pour drink into a sugar rimmed margarita glass. Ocean Prime: Handcrafted cocktails, shaken, stirred and superb, from the den for men rosemary-infused Manhattan (Woodford Reserve, Carpano Antica Vermouth, Nonino Amaro, Rosemary Grapefruit, Peppercorn Bitters) to the “Auld Lang Syne” signature Berries & Bubbles (Belvedere Citrus Vodka, Marinated Blackberries, House Made Sour, Domaine Chandon Brut).
Rococo Steak: If you’ve started to grab the bull by the horns with their Turkish Rose Cocktail, then you know this steakhouse excels at cocktails. A simple Ruby Red Martini at Christmas says you’ve been naughty, not nice, made with Ketel One, St. Germain, ruby red grapefruit and basil. Other tidings of joy include: St. Pete Swing: Mix Titos vodka with ice and shake. Strain into a martini glass and add Prosecco, mint and lemon sorbet. Muddled Mule: Combine Tito's Vodka and Muddled blackberries and blueberries. Add Ginger Beer, lime juice and ice, stir and serve.
Tito’s Handmade Vodka: This is my new oh so smooth favorite, a sister to the Austin-based Deep Eddy cranberry, peach, grapefruit vodkas, displacing Grey Goose from my all-time faves: Christmas Lights Out: Mix 3 oz Tito's, 1 1⁄2 oz bourbon whiskey, 1 dollop maple syrup, 1⁄2 tsp vanilla, top off with low fat milk; mix with ice and enjoy! Candy Cane Martini: 2 1⁄2 oz of Tito's , 1 drop of peppermint oil, 1⁄4 oz grenadine syrup, 1⁄4 oz simple syrup. Shake and strain into a martini glass with a crushed candy cane rim. (Put the candy cane in a bag, and break them up with a hammer until they are the consistency of margarita salt.)
Holiday Cocktail Tips Use champagne instead of soda in your drinks. Fresh ginger syrup spices up Moscow Mules and Dark N Stormies. Simmer 2 oz. peeled, sliced ginger with a cup each of water and sugar for 30 minutes. Add a yummy sherry or port to a martini or classic Manhattan for a smooth, honey finish.
On Swann: Like the color of Santa’s coat, their Florida-style red Sangria is spicy and succulent while local Old St. Pete Righteous Rum & Spice perks up a Dark N Stormy. Serve weary adults attending your Teddy Bear tea a High Noon Tea (chai and spice tea, vanilla infused rum). Nutty Brandy infused with macadamia, hazelnut and almonds is perfect for a Christmas Eve toast.
Seasonal garnishes make merry, from red and white peppermint drops in the glass to candy cane sipper straws. Warm up a cool night with mulled red wine with muscovado sugar, fennel seed and cinnamon spice. www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

ART
BY CATHERINE MITSEAS
CREATE AND THRIVE THRU ARTWALK
Now in its 20th year, the St. Petersburg Second Saturday ArtWalk phenomenon just keeps growing. Originally begun by the Downtown Arts Association to promote galleries along Central Avenue, the single street art hop has evolved into a trip through five distinct districts toggled together by trolley services offering visitors access to more than 40 studios and galleries. Artists and galleries drove the collaboration, says John Collins, executive director of the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance. In 2012, galleries banded together to provide trolley rides to the Warehouse District. Shortly thereafter, the Arts Alliance began working with district leaders, found trolley funding, and hired a social media guru. As Collins puts it “creativity just needs organization to succeed.” Today, ArtWalk attracts more than 1,000 visitors each month to the Waterfront Arts District, Central Arts District, EDGE District, Grand Central District, and the Warehouse Arts District. These unique communities shelter enough work for visitors to traverse a new area each month. “You could easily spend three or four hours in one district,” he explains. The enthusiasm keeps growing because each Saturday’s “opening night,” Collins says. For example many, such as ARTicles Leslie Curran Gallery always premiers a new artist; Duncan McClellan glass studio features nationally recognized glass artists for weekend-long discussions and demonstrations; MESU360, Creative Clay, and others host live music. There is something for every taste and style from African American inspired pieces to contemporary glass, photography, and paintings, to New York Style graffiti and South American crafts. Indeed, the communities are becoming renown for their sheer concentration of genres. It can be argued that within the Southeastern United States, St. Petersburg houses the largest collection of clay artists and – with four working glass studios and eight galleries downtown – also touts the region’s greatest selection of glass. It is a community thriving: The ArtsXchange project is converting six warehouse buildings into live/work studios, classrooms, and commercial. ARTicles opened a second location strictly dedicated to exhibitions, Duncan McClellan Gallery now includes a sculpture garden, Ocean Blue Gallery’s owners emigrated from Sarasota; Raw Studios ArtWalk “wing it” sessions attract local musicians who belt out impromptu tunes in the outside patio. Despite the bohemian atmosphere, there are strict guidelines for entry to the walk. An artist’s work must be in a studio art gallery or part of a coop; street tents are not allowed. The greatest benefit of ArtWalk, says gallery owner Duncan McClellan, is it attracts enthusiasts to mediums usually reserved for the rarefied collector. In the case of glass art, by watching live demonstrations his guests discover that they too, want glass in their lives. A change of heart that frequently leads to commissioned work for their homes – accessible, story-driven, and personal – the very definition of art. 72

BY MELINDA TAM ORLANDO There are a handful of culinary leaders in the Tampa Bay area who drive our local innovation with their creative vision and passion. Chef Christopher Ponte is one of those leaders. Chef Ponte, who started his culinary career at Clearwater’s Pepper Mill Restaurant in 1991 and later opened his own 250-seat concept, Café Ponte, in 2002 has enjoyed many accolades for his work by food critics and locals alike, but this dreamer wanted more. In 2016, he partnered with a group of friends to open On Swann, a neighborhood restaurant and bar that is thoughtfully sourced with a seasonal menu. duPont Registry Luxury Living in Tampa Bay met up with Chef Ponte to discuss his new venture, his culinary passion and so much more.
What made you want to open another restaurant in Tampa Bay? I’ve always wanted a restaurant in Hyde Park. Hyde Park has that nice urban feel that you don’t usually find in Florida. You opened your restaurant with a group of friends. How do you know everyone? We met through the restaurant industry, became friends and decided to form this partnership to open On Swann. How is this restaurant different from Café Ponte? On Swann is more of a neighborhood, casual restaurant but it still maintains the high quality of food we have been known for at Café Ponte. What is your food philosophy? My food philosophy is to serve high-quality, fresh ingredients that are executed to perfection. Where do you get your cooking passion from? My passion about cooking comes from being able to deliver a memorable and enjoyable experience to the guests. What does food mean to you? Food means a lot to me. It’s an experience when you get to eat and dine with family and friends to create memories. What is the first thing you remember cooking? The first dish I remember cooking was a blackberry compote with my mother and sister. What dish do you make at home most often? The dish I make at home most often is a simple pasta with a red sauce.
Photos courtesy of On Swann
What are the most popular dishes at the restaurant? Currently the most popular dishes are the Scallops, Gnocchi and Kale Salad. If you were going to order the perfect meal at the restaurant, what would you order? My perfect meal at the restaurant currently would be to start with the olives followed by the endive salad, and to finish with the pasta. How do you come up with a menu? I come up with the new menus from my experiences traveling throughout the country, which helps me create a seasonal menu that is always evolving. Who would you like to walk into your restaurant? It would be an honor to have Chef Paul Bocuse walk into the restaurant. What do you want Tampa Bay to be known for food wise? I would like people to know that you don’t have to go to a big city to get great food — you can find it right here in the Bay. What advice would you give to new chefs starting out in Tampa Bay? I’d tell them to be passionate about what they are doing. They need to have a high integrity about their craft and do things properly without taking the easy way out. They also need to have pride in what they are serving to their guests. GOODY GOODY
“We’ve lost too many of these iconic spots.”
76
www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
BY MARY LOU JANSON A Tampa burger chain that had served its signature beef patties with a secret sauce since 1925 was Richard Gonzmart’s go-to dining destination when he needed to bring home dinner for his family. After finishing work at the Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City, he’d speed dial in an order and head to the Florida Avenue Goody Goody where his sack of burgers would be waiting for pick up. When the last Goody Goody location closed in 2005, it marked more than the loss of a favorite takeout spot to Gonzmart. The president of the Columbia Restaurant Group, a Tampa-based family owned and operated business, mourned another culinary casualty among an elite group of restaurants that had served Tampa families for generations. Rather than let this legacy fade from memory, Gonzmart began negotiating for the name, recipes and rights to Goody Goody. It took nearly 10 years but his persistence and patience finally paid off. The announcement made October 2014 confirmed Gonzmart was bringing Goody Goody back to Tampa. “We’ve lost too many of these iconic spots,” said the fourth generation restaurateur citing The Colonnade, Castellano & Pizzo and Agliano & Sons Fish Co. as examples of established businesses catering to local appetites that no longer exist. “I didn’t want this name to fade into history, too. Plus, at each of our restaurants we celebrate history, heritage, family and good food. Goody Goody fit right in with our other concepts. It’s perfect for us.” Reviving, rebuilding and rejuvenating Goody Goody has brought both pleasure and pressure to its owner. Instanly there were questions about where it would be built, whether the food would stand up to its predecessor and, the inevitable, when would it open? “We had off-the-charts public demand and expectations,” Gonzmart recalled. “That reassured me I had made a good purchase, but it was a little frightening, too.” The past two years allowed Gonzmart and his team time to perfect pies, sandwiches, sauces and milkshakes so they are worthy of being sold under the Goody Goody marquee. Dozens of tasting events hosting hundreds of volunteer tasters were held to ensure ingredients and execution of items included on the breakfast, lunch and dinner menu would meet with the approval of longtime fans as well as first-timers. “We want to serve those loyal customers but also introduce new generations who appreciate good food at a great value in a cool setting. I love seeing three generations sitting together talking about back then and right now. It’s a nod to the past with an eye to the future.”

Creating a clone of Goody Goody was never the plan. Elevating and expanding what the Goody Goody brand stood for was the vision. The newly designed version that opened in August features ingredients that are fresher. Its interior design is bold, bright and beautiful. And the dining experience at the Hyde Park Village hotspot is one that is commonly described as “fun.” Continued on the next page. www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

DISH “They did things at the old Goody Goody we can’t, or won’t, do today,” Gonzmart said. ”Our overall quality is better. Our meat is a far better cut. We use beef from the Strickland Ranch, just as we do at Ulele. Their fries were frozen. Ours are fresh cut daily,” he explained. “Nobody really talked about the breakfast at Goody Goody. There was a reason for that. But we worked very hard on our breakfast items. I sampled 23 kinds of bacon before adding it to the menu. All of our eggs are from Amish farms. Breakfast is my favorite meal and at Goody Goody we serve breakfast all day.”

The story continues with the upcoming opening of Goody Goody at Tampa International Airport and a recent expansion of the South Tampa site that will boost the size of both the kitchen and bathroom. Beyond that? Gonzmart hints there may be more in store for the brand but remains noncommittal for now. He admits to being pleased with the results and “ecstatic” about the response. “If something’s not fun, I don’t do it. Life is too short. Each project is fun in different ways,” he added. “At the Columbia Restaurants, it’s tweaking what has worked for 111 years and providing good food and a place for community and family celebrations. At Ulele, it’s embracing the waterfront, pioneering a completely new menu and helping revitalize Tampa Heights. At Goody Goody, I really enjoyed recreating, creating in some instances, the menu – and then providing a space that is our take on the old-time diner. I had an absolute blast.”

JACKSON IN ACTION 83 FOUNDATION
Vincent Jackson is an acclaimed wide receiver with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, co-author of children’s books written with his wife, Lindsey, and a shrewd investor whose high profile holdings include the popular SoHo restaurant, Cask, Ferg’s Live in downtown Tampa and a rapidly growing real estate company. A lifelong commitment to philanthropic activities led Jackson to launch the Jackson in Action 83 Foundation in 2012. Its mission is to provide support for military families, focusing on the educational, emotional and physical health of children. The organization operates annual programs that provide scholarships to military dependents, encourage reading achievement among elementary-aged students, gift military moms with items to help them care for infants, host military families and veterans at Buccaneers football games and more. As the only child of a military family himself, Jackson was fortunate to have close relationships with both parents but the frequent relocations and occasional long-distance relationships admittedly were disruptive. How did your father’s 21-year military career affect your childhood and provide motivation for your foundation? Being a military kid, we were always moving so I had to learn how to make friends consistently as I was changing schools. I had to be a little more adaptable, get out of my comfort zone and face some different challenges. I’ve been philanthropic my entire life. My dad was big on that as far as giving back to the community. We did a lot of charitable 5Ks together, we used to do community clean-ups and feed the homeless. As a professional (football player) starting my career in San Diego, I got involved right away with the Salvation Army, working with the cancer foundation and Boys & Girls Clubs. In the back of my mind I always wondered what would be something for me to put my personal stamp on, something that would be near and dear to my heart, something that I could relate to? And it always took me back to the military. There seemed to be a niche that was being overlooked. What’s going on at the homes of these families? How are the spouses and the children being affected by deployment and how can we provide a support team to really focus on that? 88
www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
The foundation’s mission is to provide support for military families, focusing on the educational, emotional and physical health of children. How are you impacting these families? We reach out directly and get feedback about their background and any resources they may need. It may be help finding a job, meeting other moms or questions about schools. All of our programs, our baby showers, our reading program and our kid’s camp, are generated from speaking with military personnel, spouses and teachers to find out what is the gap and how we can help. How does the foundation operate and how much of your personal time is involved? Our foundation is very organic and honestly it is myself, my wife, our executive director (Allison Gorrell) and about three or four board members. Obviously we have great volunteers who come out to events we have. We cannot do this without them. As far as myself, my hands are on everything we do. When we take kids to One Buccaneer Place, I give the tours. Lindsey and Allison are the leads on the baby showers but I am there. I wouldn’t have it any other way. The whole point of this is to make an impact and take me out of it. I am just another volunteer. We want to make these military men, women and their families the stars of everything we do. What is most fulfilling to you about the foundation’s work? The results that we see and, first and foremost, the children. I loved my childhood and look back at it as a gift but there were many challenges that came with it. If not for a great support system that I had with my family and the people they surrounded themselves with, it would have been very difficult. Our programs are very wholesome, we are truly hands-on and very impactful. I don’t know if these programs are going to affect five kids or 500 but I know it’s invaluable because there is such a need to support these families. We get new faces every year. These young families are always coming and going. We may have them for six months or two years. Even when they have gone onto a new military base or a new part of the country, they still reach out to us to say “Timothy brought up something he did at your camp two years ago”. That’s what it’s about. That’s the beauty of it. GG For more information go to www.jacksoninaction83.org.
