From The Publisher January/February 2018 Dear Readers, It’s 2018! And what a start. The stock market is at new highs and the Tampa Bay area temperatures are at new lows. I hope your Holidays were bright and that your new year is off to a great start. Here at the duPont REGISTRY Tampa Bay we have begun a number of subtle changes to bring new life, color and excitement to our brand, to you, our reader, and to our media partners. Why, “media partners” and not “advertising clients”? Easy. A media partnership with duPont REGISTRY Tampa Bay is the only fully integrated multimedia editorial marketing platform in the Tampa Bay area with a guaranteed affluent audience every month in print, and daily in digital and social media platforms, and throughout the year at selected events around Tampa Bay. It is no longer appropriate to pitch an ad for duPont REGISTRY Tampa Bay or an event sponsorship, or a number of impressions for dupontregistrytampabay.com. We believe our responsibility is to supply the reader with great content and interesting purchasing opportunities and to provide top tier opportunities to our media partners that satisfy their needs to be well represented in our exclusive marketplace. This issue focuses on our special section, 2018 Residential Luxury Real Estate. There are 12 pages offering a brief glimpse into some of the most luxurious residential real estate for sale in the Tampa Bay area. We invite you to look further into this special marketplace and carefully review the offerings from some of the best real estate professionals in our marketplace. I am also very excited to bring to your attention the fashion section of this issue. It features absolutely gorgeous outfits that were professionally photographed by Brian James. Our model is our very own fitness blogger Alivia McDaniel. Alivia was recently Miss Belleair and competed in The Miss Florida contest. You will hear and read more from Alivia in her blog on our website, which will give you a brief glimpse into the world of fitness and beauty on a regular basis. Please be sure to review our expanded calendar of events and dR Nightlife. We are attempting to bring you some of the exciting events happening in the entire Tampa Bay area. We hope you will use this resource and the up-to-date calendar on our website as a resource to explore and enjoy our community. We are always on the search for the multitude of social, philanthropic and charity events in our community. If you are a leader, underwriter or just a participant at any of these wonderful gala‘s and get-togethers, please contact us and we will attempt to get pictures of your event added to our dR Party section, and on our social media pages on the internet. Importantly, I am particularly delighted to feature Julie Weintraub and her Hands Across the Bay on our Back Page feature. Julie, and her husband, Steve, have set their sights on helping others in meaningful ways by using their time, energy and financial resources to advance causes that help the Tampa Bay community deal with major social, health, wellness, bullying, suicide and domestic violence issues. Their efforts in these areas reflect their commitment to increase awareness and have a positive impact on the lives of Tampa Bay individuals and families. All this and more in the pages of the duPont REGISTRY Tampa Bay, January/February Real Estate issue. Don’t forget we have our usual travel, boating and automotive features, our lifestyle directory and our dR Party picture section. Enjoy!

I

n a single day, I shattered clay discs with a double-barrel shotgun and swallowed more than my share of oysters. Until then, I’d never touched a gun or had the guts to swallow the briny culinary pearls, tonged from their beds in the sea. If that had been my first day at Montage Palmetto Bluff, located within an exclusive gated community midway between Hilton Head and Savannah in the South Carolina Lowcountry, I might have tried neither. And what a shame that would have been. I hadn’t yet settled in to understand that I wasn’t just at a resort. I was in a place. Only a hand-lettered, wooden sign serves as a breadcrumb for first-timers that they’ve reached the turn off to enter these 20,000 acres, “About the size of Manhattan,” says my driver, Sean. “When I drive people who’ve never been here (Palmetto Bluff) before, they expect to enjoy it,” says Sean. “But when I pick them up four-five days later, they are overwhelmed. Every time. Many end up buying a second home.” Sean drives down a long stretch of paved road lined with gas-lit lamps and bike trails that run parallel to a forest of oak, pine, palmetto and magnolia. Before dropping me at the Inn, he tools through Wilson, one of two villages that anchor not only the resort, but also private residences and businesses within Palmetto Bluff. Architectural eye candy of one-of-a-kind front porch houses are clustered around the tidy oak studded village green containing stone ruins. They are all that remain of the Wilson Family Gilded Agemansion that burned down in 1926. It was the Senior Wilson who’d been a railroad baron and who bought this acreage as a hunting lodge in 1902, establishing Palmetto Bluff. A clapboard chapel sits on the bank of the broad May River – a Southern bride’s wedding fantasy. When we reach the white-columned, 74-room Inn, completed in September 2016, Sean tells me it was modeled on the mansion whose ruins I had just seen. A black Labrador retriever named May is in the lobby being loved-on by guests. She’s one of four canine ambassadors at this pet-friendly property that I soon discover is as welcoming to four-legged guests as to their two-legged owners. In a richly paneled library off the lobby, there’s a fire in the hearth, guests in every leather armchair and one gentleman with a dog nestled on either side of his lap. I make a mental note to claim an armchair in that library the first chance I get. Bonus if there’s a glass of merlot in my hand. To get a broader perspective of Palmetto Bluff and the historic community of Bluffton of which Palmetto is part, the next day I join a group of guests, including a few other travel writers who have become my compatriots, and board the resort’s 104-year old fully restored commuter yacht, named The Grace for a river cruise. It is from my perch on this mahogany-paneled boat that I better understand where I am. The Grace’s prow cleaves the tidal path through marshland that’s been used since now-extinct Native American coastal tribes fished and hunted here, long before the

European explorers showed up in the 1560’s. There is so much evidence here of past peoples that Palmetto Bluff employs a fulltime archaeologist. Dolphins leap and birds alight on the water’s surface bathed in golden light. Another guest, an older gentleman, points to the cottages on both sides of the river. “When growing up in Savannah, mostly doctors only had houses on the May River. There was no electricity, so they were summer cottages.” We approach Old Town Bluffton with its working oyster dock. Captain Ed points out the Garvin House, glimpsed from the water. “It was the first house built in Bluffton by a freed slave after the Civil War,” he said. “It’s been recently restored so you can visit.” Next is an enormous copper roof atop a rustic, unpainted wooden structure. “That’s the Anglican Church, built in 1857 and the most popular wedding spot in town.” We return to the hotel famished and refuel with lunch on the patio overlooking the lagoon at Fore & Aft, the casual dining option that also serves the two pools (one is part of the spa). A group of kayakers emerges from under a bridge and paddles past. It is only from my view here that I finally understand how the total of 200 guest-rooms at Montage are counted. Stand-alone cottages face the river and lagoon. One of my best friend’s has stayed in them twice and her advice is, “Insist on a river view and you’ll never want to leave.” There are also two-level “guest house” compounds, each with a handful of rooms identical to those in the Inn, and ideal for groups. In addition, Montage has recently completed its third of 35 planned residences whose owners can choose to put their luxury vacation home into a rental pool managed by Montage and whose guests will have access to all of the service, amenities and privileges of resort guests, such as access to the otherwise members-only May River Golf Club and the Palmetto Bluff Shooting Club. I’m starting to understand how Montage Hotels & Resorts, aligned with one-of-a-kind luxury resorts out west (Laguna Beach, Beverly Hills, Deer Valley, Los Cabos in Mexico and Kapalua Bay on Maui) has embraced not only Palmetto Bluff, its first east coast property in its portfolio, but its coastal Carolina culture and Southern hospitality, too. That evening, we take advantage of the resort’s Mercedes program (they have four loaners for guests to use) and return to Bluffton for dinner. But first, we’re pedaled around on a bike taxi, treated to a historic tour by lifelong resident Trey Snow that includes the 10 remaining Antebellum structures in town that survived the burning of Bluffton by Union troops during the Civil War. It’s on my last full day that we visit the Shooting Club, a head-on collision with my values and comfort level. I had never before even touched a gun, but in the spirit of the place, I embrace the “yes” and step up to the shooting stand. It’s part of the 13 station, 40-acre sporting clay course whose only targets are neon-orange clay discs. Continued on the next page.

dR Quick Get Away My instructor is a willowy brunette who reminds me of the actress Connie Britton from the television show Nashville. Sarah instills confidence in me, even when unexpected tears start to flow as she adjusts my cheek against the wooden stock so I can properly site down the barrel of the shotgun. There are a lot of unnamed emotions flowing through me and I want to step away, but Sarah is patient and keeps me at the platform, wrapped up in her girl-power energy, until those clays start flying and I start shooting, shattering nearly every one. We return to the Inn in time for the daily culinary happy hour that showcases a rotating menu of heirloom dishes that are central to this place – in the South, on the river, at Montage Palmetto Bluff. Today’s Culinary Heirloom are oysters plucked from the May River, steamed in their shells over the fire and shucked as fast as we eat them. Emboldened by the adrenalin of my shooting experience and a glass of Artillery Punch – a cocktail of epic Southern lineage pulled from a Savannah grandmother’s handwritten trove of recipes and served in antique-looking glassware – I scoop my first-ever oyster with a touch of hot sauce and horseradish onto a Saltine cracker and pop it in my mouth. The combination is pure pleasure. G

Lure More Customers to the Joys of Boating

E

asier, more intuitive controls, higher horsepower and quieter, more reliable engines are among the improvements boat builders and manufacturers are incorporating into their latest models in hopes of luring more customers to the joys of boating. No longer relegated to only recreational activities like fishing and water skiing, boats are now nimble enough to be used as transportation alternatives to the daily commute, going out for dinner or running errands. Consider this as an alternative to sitting in traffic that is slowing to a crawl leaving you landlocked within the confines of a car while gazing longingly at the surrounding waterfront. In a boat, you would be free to speed along at your own pace and even enjoy a perk like pulling into a boat slip near a favorite restaurant or retailer. David Bair of Quality Boats says “People don’t realize what you can do with a boat. You can pick up your dry cleaning, go to Publix and even stop by Starbucks. Personally I have not driven to the Florida Keys in 15 years.”

20

www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Speaking from the recent St. Petersburg Power and Sailboat Show, Bair anticipates the increased demand for boats will continue through 2018. “The boat demand will continue, if interest rates stay stable, fuel prices remain affordable and consumer-friendly designs continue to capture the public’s attention.” The National Marine Manufacturers Association identified boating trends for 2017. They include an upswing in demand for yachts and large cruising boats with increased availability of affordable options. Smaller and more versatile vessels appeal to younger boaters who want an all-in-one boat suitable for fishing, cruising and water sports. In their most recent reporting period it was revealed just how popular boating is becoming: Annual United States sales of boats, marine products and services were anticipated to reach $37 billion in 2017. Annual United States sales of new boats, marine engines and marine accessories were expected to approach $19.1 billion.

By: Mary Lou Janson Leading the nation in sales of new powerboat, engine, trailer and accessories in 2015 was Florida with a total $2.6 billion. Technological enhancements are showing up on showroom floors and at boat shows. Digital dashboards, LED lighting and easier ways to maneuver boats are among some of the newest options. Joysticks are replacing traditional steering mechanisms making tasks like docking or driving a boat as simple as twisting or turning the device. These are just a few of the items that are helping boating become more attractive, accessible and appealing to consumers formerly hesitant to take the controls, anyone who has drifted away from boating or avid boaters who are ready to upgrade to new, improved models. “Boating is not as scary as people may think it is. Boat owners can be a lot more confident with the help of new technology and engines that are more forgiving,” Bair said. Quality Boats, which ranked 11th among the Top 100 Dealers in

North America by Boating Industry Magazine, offers a selection of fishing boat lines, runabouts and cruising yachts from select boat suppliers that are all independently owned and operated. Among its leading lines are Grady-White, Pursuit, Regal, Tiara Yachts and Tiara Sport. Bair reports seeing across-the-board demand for boats in all categories but the bulk of his business is coming from the middle to upper-end of the pricing spectrum. “Our average sale along the West Coast of Florida is $250,000. That is the pocket that we are really serving right now,” he said. With the help of a strong economy, innovations that increasingly tempt consumers and an abundance of wide-open waterways that make the Tampa Bay area a boating paradise, Bair’s outlook calls for smooth sailing. “On the water, there’s no road rage,” he added.G

A

n exciting, electrifying and energizing entertainment experience arrives in the Tampa Bay area February 14 when Cirque du Soleil’s VOLTA opens under the silver and white Big Top tent for a limited engagement. It has been five years since the world-famous Canadian organization known for its acrobatics, artistry and originality last installed its signature tent village and venue locally. Not only is the reserved seating, enclosed theater back but this visit places a show center stage that has previously only been performed in Canada prior to making its United States debut in Miami in December. Fans familiar with the stunning stunts, live musical performances, custom-built stages and spectacular costumes that are hallmarks of Cirque du Soleil productions know that the 33-year-old organization is not content to rest on its stellar reputation. Instead, this global phenomenon continues to ramp up and amp up its efforts to elevate the sort of adrenalin-inducing, gravity-defying performances that keep audiences worldwide coming and clamoring for more. VOLTA is no exception. Rather it’s another example of how exceptional Cirque du Soleil can be. “We’ve done a lot of acrobatics so the question becomes how do we enhance that?” said Michael G. Smith, artistic director of the North American Tour of VOLTA. In the case of VOLTA, urban action sports introduce new thrills and chills to the spotlight. While appealing to a young demographic, longtime fans will be equally dazzled by the high-speed BMX biking maneuvers featuring spins, flips and flying leaps from jump boxes and ramps that are performed from a full scale bike park. The story behind VOLTA focuses on personal transformations that are only possible when there is freedom of choice and when individuals allow themselves to express their own authenticity. The lead character, WAZ, hosts a popular reality-based game show that enables winning contestants to exit a colorless world of conformity and enter an elite realm of celebrity. But WAZ has become a prisoner of his own fame and public persona. Conflicted, he realizes it is time to re-connect with his inner spirit to set himself free. “He is a character in a TV show who has the fame and fortune that we crave but behind that mask is someone suffering from emptiness, loneliness and isolation,” Smith explained. “This is his journey to becoming himself and getting the world to accept him as he is.” Throughout this search, WAZ encounters characters from three different communities, the GREYS, ELITES and FREE SPRITS, who accompany him in this discovery of individuality. As the journey unfolds, elite athletes share the spotlight with worldclass acrobats. These daring artistic pairings include a ballerina going toe-to-tire with a BMX biker. Dual, skipping ropes gaining speed and forcing rope jumpers to keep up at a frenzied pace. A not-soordinary obstacle course sending performers soaring as they scramble over structures and crisscross in mid-air while jumping to and from a bridge.

By: Mary Lou Janson But behind these dazzling displays of physical prowess and pinpoint accuracy there is a powerful and emotional story. “Every (Cirque du Soleil) show has a human message. People want that. Life is tough and they want to be touched,” Smith said, noting that it is an emotional connection with the audience that has kept long-running Cirque du Soleil shows like Quidam and Algeria relatable and relevant for nearly 20 years. “This is a show that celebrates who you are and that is something we all need to do in the world today. Why are we conforming? We need to inspire people to express themselves and show who they are. “Every person is a genius. Instead of hiding that, liberate yourself.”G

adiant sunset colors and sparkling Gulf waters created the perfect setting for Coastal Properties Group International’s Fifth Anniversary celebration held recently at the Edge Hotel on Clearwater Beach. Established in 2012, Coastal Properties Group began with two offices, and has since grown to 12 offices and more than 200 real estate advisors achieving a cumulative 5-year total sales volume in excess of $2.5 billion. The company sold more than $800 million in residential real estate in 2017. Founder Alex Jansen credits the company’s continued success to a business model that enables its sales teams to deliver the highest level of service to their clients. Advisors are able to focus more time and effort on helping others with the purchase and sale of property while also realizing greater productivity. “Our unique business platform attracts the most talented real estate advisors,” says Jansen. “In addition to administrative support, we offer a team of eight marketing professionals who assist with determining effective marketing strategies and the creative development of promotional materials to provide exposure for our clients’ properties on a global basis.”

The Luxury Market Returns Home

R

ecent studies show that the luxury market comprising items such as luxury cars, luxury cruises and high-end food and wine grew by 5 percent globally in 2017. Thankfully this resurgence in the demand for luxury items also includes upper-tier properties. Here in the Tampa Bay area, indicators show a thriving luxury home market. “We thought 2016 was extraordinary as more than 650 homes priced above $1 million were sold,” stated Dania Perry, Luxury & Waterfront Real Estate Specialist with Century 21 Jim White & Associates. “However, through November 2017, nearly 700 homes in that same price point were sold.” Perry added, “We would have had an even stronger performance if we had more selection.” A real estate professional since 2006, Perry has focused on the luxury home market for the past 10 years. During that time she has sold more than 200 properties priced at $1 million and above. Last year, Perry achieved a sales volume exceeding $104 million. She has been universally recognized as the Number One selling agent for Century 21 across the globe and has earned this distinction for each of the past five years. As an acknowledged expert on the Tampa Bay luxury home market, Perry is excited about the positive trend taking place. “Tampa Bay has evolved into a very powerful luxury market and has piqued the interest of international buyers,” Perry says. “The area offers buyers exceptional waterfront and beachfront values when compared to other regions around the state of Florida and across the country at large. We are seeing a significant and steady stream of out-of-state buyers coming to our area, including many from outside the U.S." When working with home sellers, Perry counsels clients on the importance of curb appeal, regardless of the home’s list price. As when marketing any property, making sure the home presents well both inside and out and that it is priced in line with the market are keys to a successful sale. Equally important, says Perry, is having a real estate agent who understands the luxury market in great detail and works it exclusively. According to Perry, high-end properties priced higher than $1.5 million could take up to 200 days to sell based on location, timing and how well it’s priced. “New construction is performing extremely well along the beaches and Intracoastal,” says Perry. “These types of properties have been selling very rapidly—often within a week after being placed on the market!” Luxury home buyers are very focused on understanding the communities and learning how various properties will meet their needs in terms of market value, location and family interests. “There are so many factors to consider. For example, if you’re looking for a waterfront estate where you can keep your 40 foot sailboat it is critical to know that the water is deep enough to accommodate the boat at extreme low tide, and you need to know this with certainty before buying,” Perry explains. “Information and knowledge are powerful and enable a buyer to make the best decision possible and move forward.” Will the demand for upper-tier properties continue into 2018? Perry thinks so. “I see good things ahead for the luxury market. The Tampa Bay market continues to show stability and growth which creates confidence. Add interest rates that remain competitive and low inventory and you have excellent fundamentals for a strong 2018!” G

At Home with Rhonda Shear Inside Look into her Romantic Snell Isle Hideway

ollywood bombshell, lingerie mogul, former Playboy model, actress and comedy queen Rhonda Shear lives in Snell Isle when she’s not pitching her intimate apparel on HSN, doing good deeds or promoting her new hilarious memoir “Up All Night.” With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I asked Rhonda and husband Van Fagan how they keep the sizzle in their Valentine’s Day celebration. Between touring her luxury downtown St. Pete home (which she calls her “Barbie Dream House”) and talking about her New Orleans to Las Vegas to Tampa journey and her new book, we couldn’t stop laughing. In her funny, naughty, candid book Shear shares the unforgettable story of a woman who was always “up to something”—too pretty, too funny, too ethnic, too blonde—to achieve anything, but who ended up achieving everything. Packed with vivid characters, hilarious stories and wisdom for women of all ages, “Up All Night”, proves that when it comes to achieving your dreams, the only voice that matters is your own, and her business/life tips resonate as the real deal. First up, it was time for romance. “I always love Valentine’s Day and when I hosted “Up All Night” late night movie show, it was huge for us and in the lingerie business, Valentine’s Day is the apex, although I like to say that every day should be boudoir dress up day!” says Shear.

How do she and Van like to celebrate? In addition to both being incredible home cooks who enjoy whipping up a romantic meal, topped off with good bubbly (Veuve Cliquot, of course and chocolate strawberries), they like dating and a romantic dinner. “We love Rococo Strak Restaurant, it’s so romantic and intimately dark, and the food is amazing and in Tampa, we love Capital Grille.” Shear’s home décor is “romantic, eclectic style.” With a fabulous Snell Isle bay view from the backyard, they overlook an alfresco haven complete with pool and their 52-foot yacht for cruising to the Keys or Sarasota. Van and Rhonda live there with their four Chihuahuas and one Yorkie, her “little heartbeats” and the inspiration for her latest philanthropic effort as an SPCA Tampa Bay Ambassador. “Each room is uniquely interesting and eclectic and part of our personality,” says Shear about the 10,000 square foot home with four bedrooms. “We’ve repurposed the three bedrooms and rooms in unique ways.” For example, we created a complete art deco home entertainment theatre. Local artist Jeff Walling painted art deco canvases of old movie posters and the Hollywood sign covers a window like a black out shade. With eight leather chairs and stateof-the-art sound system, it’s where everyone wants to hang out. They turned another bedroom into the “Zen Room,” a spa with candles, Buddhas and beautiful Asian artwork, a spa bed, high-end massage chair and cabinet with all the spa oils and creams. With a penchant for play and entertaining guests, Shear created a billiard room, and when the grandkids visit, the pool table converts to a ping pong table. Who’s the better pool player? “Van of course,” she laughs. “For charity events, we’ve covered the pool table with black velvet and shown amazing jewelry, even the Dali brought jewels never seen in the museum to the house with a security guard, of course.”

Under the spiral staircase is a little round room Shear calls “my speakeasy game room,” stocked with games (poker table, Clue, Monopoly, checkers) and framed in beautiful heavy green velvet drapes with rope tie-backs. The cozy hideaway stars another of Jeff Walling’s 40-foot canvas’s showcasing his Florida vision of Monet’s water lilies, filled with mangroves and Florida birds Shear transformed the laundry/sewing room into a beauty salon and Greenroom for photo shoots and make-up sessions. Even the mobile dog groomer sets up here, and a refrigerator full of bubbly water and soda makes it a “den for women” she calls “Spa Eukie.” Her romantic styling wafts through the house. In the living room is an elegant white couch and a Steinway grande piano is the center of the Grand Salon, where she hosts 300-person fundraisers and where she and Van renewed their wedding vows. There’s a highceiling den with a Chihuly-esque chandelier and a formal dining room that seats twelve guests comfortably. “I love tablescapes,” says Shear. The kitchen is the heart of the home with an antique wooden table from Paris, a butler area and three sinks plus a prep sink. Next to the kitchen is a stand-alone bar with 12 barstools and a pub table that’s “bigger than most bars, all mahogany, hand-built,” says Shear. The house also features three balconies, a three-room master bedroom that doubles as a den/office with a two-sided fireplace, a full gym with dance barre, a steam room and a mother-in-law guest suite with bath and kitchen. “Good thing because I will be kicking up the exercise routine now that I’ve signed to be one of Nutrasystem’s online influencers.”G

Four Yoga Techniques For The New Year opefully, the holiday season was many, many things, but there are perhaps two above all others: joyous and stressful. It’s an odd blend, but one you can probably understand and relate to if you’re like most people. On the one hand, there was the joy in taking a few days off work, perhaps seeing family and/or traveling, and maybe celebrating a major holiday with some nice meals and gift exchanges. On the other hand however, traffic was bad, houses got crowded, and there was a lot of shopping and organization to do. Combine it all, and you get a lot of joy and a lot of stress. One way to alleviate holiday cheer and keep yourself healthy is to plan regular exercise when you’re able to. It can be a little difficult to find time for long runs, extensive workout routines or trips to the gym. Yoga, however, is always available to you – particularly nowadays when all you need is a mobile app to work you through some poses. Here are a few simple techniques that make particularly good sense for relieving the impact of the holiday season and starting the New Year off in the right direction. These can help to relieve stress, keep you calm and even work on some of the parts of your body that might be most affected by long hours on your feet or out walking around a shopping mall.

H

Plank Pose Yoga Journal actually put together an entire routine for the postholiday season, consisting of 14 different poses in sequence. If you have time, you should give the whole thing a look, as it is designed to activate your core and help you shed stress, both of which can be great for the general upkeep of good health and energy during a stressful time. The plank pose, in particular, is excellent for developing and maintaining core strength. This is effectively a foundation for many of your most active muscle groups, such that a strong core can help you to better manage long, busy days. Downward-Facing Dog One common complaint as far as a holiday season hangover goes is lower back pain. It’s common to experience simply as a result of being on your feet all day – let alone performing all those holidayrelated tasks such as reaching up to decorate a tree, decorating mantles, reaching for store shelves, hanging lights, etc. And nothing can ruin a good time quite like lower back pain! Downward-facing dog is one of the most popular yoga poses in existence, and probably one of the best for lower back pain as well, given that it targets and stretches both the lower back and the hamstrings. As one write-up put it, these muscles help to support your spine and help you stand and lift objects, so strengthening them throughout the year is a good idea.

www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Happy 2018! duPont REGISTRY Tampa Bay has found great information on how to bounce back from the Holidays. We hope you add these techniques to your health and wellness plan for the New Year. Child’s Pose This is what’s sometimes called a restorative posture, and a good follow-up to any of the above exercises. Indeed, it was mentioned in the same piece referenced previously with regard to DownwardFacing Dog. Child’s Pose, particularly mixed in with slightly more strenuous exercise, is an excellent backstretch and is known to be a relaxing pose that helps to “center” you, more or less. A lot of people turn to child’s pose before bed for this reason, and fitting it in at night throughout the year can keep you in a healthy and happy place. Alternate Nostril Breathing If you’re looking for a very simple technique for stress relief and relaxation, alternate nostril breathing is something to seriously consider. The latter explains that the end result of a session of alternate nostril breathing is a greater sense of balance and clarity, which can certainly be useful any time of the year! There are different ways to go about this technique, but basically you’ll hold one nostril shut at a time, breathing deeply through the open one. G

River Dance: Exploring Europe on a Right-size Cruise Ship

A

fter touring Budapest’s architecture, public art and food scene for a full week, I boarded the Viking Egil hesitantly. Would a thin ship be a comfy home for seven days? And, is one morning and afternoon apiece enough for visiting the Austrian and German destinations on the itinerary? Yes and yes, I learned. By traversing the Danube River one port at a time, I was able to get a true feel for several destinations – both landmark attractions and the quirky finds hidden away near the headliners. Lodging on the “longship” throughout the trip provided a pampering home base with every American comfort at the ready. All of Viking’s 40-plus longships are identical, with a light, bright decor that is at once deluxe and understated. Taupes, tans and light woods pervade from the lobby to the staterooms to the public spaces, always with a dash of indulgence. Despite their Scandinavian grace, the boats have amenities Americans want: strong hot showers, 110 volt outlets, heated bathroom floors, bedside and reading lights, filtered drinking water, large bottles of toiletries, and hot beverages and sweet snacks available 24/7. In addition to creative meals and regional specialties, the dining room always offers simple alternatives like steak-and-fries. The ship is designed for panoramic. Whether the vessel is docked or moving, passengers can sit in the expansive lounge lined with picture windows, or on the equally generous deck and take in the views: picturesque pastoral communities, scenic natural areas and more. It’s always easy to get a front-row seat indoors and out. Occasionally the ship will go through a lock in the canal; curiosity seekers gather up top to watch as the water rises. Each morning, the ship brings the 190 passengers to a new destination. Once the doors open, bilingual tour guides are at the ready for complimentary excursions, generally a 90-minute to fourhour walk, often with a bus component. Guests are divided into small groups so they can easily stay together and hear the information shared; special “gizmos” with ear pieces for audio to allow the experts to speak calmly without shouting, and listeners to hear them with ease. On our itinerary, one of six available on the Danube, Viking brought passengers on a half-day Budapest tour, showing them highlights of this vibrant modern city with a deeply painful past. Participants got to explore the hilltop castle community in Buda and views of the city’s striking parallel bridges, along with highlights of Pest across the river, including the elegant Andrassy Avenue. Those who preferred to explore independently might have sought out memorable stops such as the numerous bronze sculptures along Danube Promenade; the one called Shoes is most memorable, as it’s a tribute to World War II victims pushed into the river from that spot. On a happier note, the Parliament building and the Hungarian State Opera House are impressively ornate historic structures.

dR Travel Rather than enjoy the ship’s ample meals, travelers may have grabbed a Hungarian langos open-faced sandwich and a sweet chimney cake dessert at the Caravan Outdoor Food Hall, then headed to a Ruin Bar – a pub set up within a bombed-out building – for a drink. Since I’d already seen Budapest, the Egil’s staff arranged for a private jaunt to Szentendre, a Hungarian-Serbian community from the 1500s loaded with artisan wares vended along narrow cobblestone streets. Once we set sail, our itinerary began with Vienna, the sophisticated Austrian cultural center known for waltzes, royalty, cafés and a frescoed opera concert hall. A bus brought us to see the Ringstrasse urban core, with fanciful white buildings that house palaces and residences. Then, those of us who opted for no additional excursion, dispersed to museums, historical sites and modern galleries or, in my case, to the Naschmarkt food market. There, more than 100 vendors hawk foodstuffs and snacks, as they have since 1774; the current version has been around for 100+ years, selling temptations from stuffed olives to the famous Viennese chocolate cake Sachertorte. After all that urban immersion, Göttweig Abbey in the Wachau Valley, the next day’s stop, was short and sweet. The 900-year-old baroque Benedictine Abbey is home to a few dozen monks and is known for a frescoed ceiling and a massive library. It is surrounded by vineyards and apricot plantings. Day 4’s port was Passau, a Bavarian hub with pastel buildings and a 17th-century church boasting Europe’s largest pipe organ. I instead headed to Salzburg, where a guide brought The Sound of Music to life, explaining the Von Trapp family’s ties to the city streets where we walked. We were treated to a festive lunch at the country’s oldest restaurant, where upbeat operatic singers performed popular songs from the movie soundtrack. The quiet Bavarian city of Regensburg was especially enchanting. It’s a college town and Medieval city with a checkered past and a lively retail and dining scene. After an introductory tour that highlighted a troubling Jewish history, we spent the day window shopping for hand-crafted products. For a typical treat, we stopped into the timeless Dampfnudel-Uli, a memorabilia-filled restaurant in a former chapel at the base of the 1270 Patrician-style Baumburger Tower. Nearly every customer had the same food order: a plateful of just-sweet steamed dumplings topped with a custardy vanilla sauce. Nuremberg was our final stop, and like the other destinations it proved to be a thriving contemporary destination filled with somber reminders of last century’s wars. Thanks to the Viking tour, we drove by a stadium where grand Nazi rallies were held, and a half-built coliseum that was meant to rival Rome’s, before walking around the Imperial Palace. As it rebuilds, Nuremberg has replicated the architecture of buildings that were destroyed, meaning the Medieval flavor remains intact despite the city’s modernity. Free to explore, we learned about the work of artist Albrecht Dürer in his one-time

By: Rona Gindin home. Souvenir shopping in Market Square was simple: the Lebkuchen spice cookies, a Christmas tradition, are sold everywhere. With all this exploring, still we found ourselves unwinding back on the Egil each evening. We gathered in the lounge as the crew shared the next day’s itinerary, then proceeded to the dining room for a three-course dinner with wine and beer included. We often meandered back to the lounge after dessert. There, a piano player entertained as we socialized over board games or participated in special events like German lessons. I toured every chance possible, yet some fellow guests stayed on the Egil often, relaxing in a hotel-like setting. Essentially, we all created the vacation that was right for us. By: Janan Talafer oday’s high-end luxury master bedroom closets are a far cry from the tiny closets found in many Florida ranch homes in the 1970s and 1980s. Back then, there was hardly enough room to store clothing, let alone try to organize anything. Fortunately, that is no longer the case. “Closets have evolved into a haven where you can relax and unwind as you end your day. In the morning, it’s the place where you get organized and prepare yourself to start your day,” says Ken Cleary of California Closets Tampa Bay. Wayne Smith of Southern Closet Systems agrees that today’s savvy, affluent homeowners want a big, spacious closet with plenty of room to store everything. One of the reasons for this trend, he says, is that luxury master bedrooms are being used differently than in the past. “The idea of a conventional bedroom with a bed and traditional bureau or dresser is out – that’s old school,” says Smith. “Instead dressers are being moved into the closet, which leaves the master bedroom much more open and comfortable.” It also transforms the closet into a high-end dressing room that can be decorated with a beautiful, creative touch tailored to the homeowner’s style and taste.

T

More Than Just A Closet A well designed, inspired closet serves multiple roles. First, it’s all about eliminating clutter, creating organization and efficiency for people with extremely busy lives. But as luxury custom closets have transformed into personal retreat spaces, it’s only natural that homeowners would want to add the artistic touches and amenities that reflect their personality. “The primary objective is to meet the client’s needs for organization, then we review the budget and begin to add the aesthetic features,” says Jack Green of Closet Factory Tampa. “We make sure it all fits appropriately, then layer in the design, texture, color and high-end materials.” More than simply storage spaces, today’s high-end closets also function as display galleries, not only for clothing but also for personal collections that can’t realistically be showcased anywhere else in the home. Do you have a passion for shoes, handbags, sunglasses, scarves, hats or ties? The closet is the ideal setting to put them on display so you can admire them in your own personal space. “We’ve had some very fun projects, with clients wanting a Louis Vuitton Boutique or a Sex in the City Closet like the TV show,” says Green. “One client collected the small jeweled Judith Leiber Couture purses and wanted to display all of them, which numbered in the thousands. We’ve also had clients who loved sunglasses and had about 100 pairs they wanted to display.”

dR Home Not surprisingly, shoe collections are extremely popular for many people. The right closet design incorporates cabinets, display areas or drawers that are crafted to showcase the shoes to their best advantage while making it easy for you to find the right pair quickly. “We can create slanted shelves to maximize how many shoes can fit onto the shelves and then design accent lighting to highlight the collection,” says Cleary. Color, Style & Extras Just like the bedroom, living room and kitchen, the addition of color and texture in the closet can dramatically alter the ambiance and personality of the space. The days of dark, masculine closet interiors are giving way toward a light, airy more contemporary feeling. “The two most popular colors these days are white and light grey, especially with a textured surface,” says Green. Cleary agrees. “Tuscan Moon, which has a light blue-grey appearance, and Linen are in great demand. We can barely keep them in stock,” he says. “Light grey and white are definitely popular, but we’ve done everything from navy blue to sage green,” says Smith. “When it comes to a painted finish, or a custom stain, whatever color the client wants is what we can do. We’ve also created a sleek, glossy finish for clients who want a more modern, contemporary look.” According to Smith, texture is also a hot new trend. Distinctive textures and wood-grain finishes on walls, doors, cabinets and drawers can make a powerful fashion statement. So can Europeaninspired artisan panels made of etched laminated glass or translucent resin fabricated to resemble stone, marble or enhanced with bold colors and patterns, textures or images. “Artisan panels can be a work of art and enhanced with any number of designs, from flowers to bamboo and geometric patterns,” says Cleary. LED lighting is another must-have feature for today’s high-end closets. “For years, lighting was prohibited by fire codes for use in closets, but now with LED lighting, we can use it to light up many different areas,” says Green. The possibilities are unlimited. Choose warm light or cool. Then select the right fixture: chandeliers, track lighting, accent lighting, backlighting and more. “We’ve used vertical lighting to highlight the shelves and then added illuminated wardrobe rails so the clothes stand out,” says Smith. For the finishing touch, closet accessories can range from specialty racks, jewelry drawers, custom shoe storage cubbies and decorative hardware, to upholstered benches and islands with beautiful countertops. More unique extras include small refrigerators, a coffee station, mini-bar, flat-screen TVs and even hidden safes. “We’ve placed safes in islands or cabinets made to look like there are three drawers,” says Cleary. For a recent client, Southern Closet Systems created a secret entryway hidden within a bank of shelves in the closest. “Only the homeowner knows how to open it, ” says Smith. “The bank of shelves swings out to expose a huge bank vault door, which leads to a large safe room.”

By: Janan Talafer Not Just For The Master Bedroom It’s easy to imagine a beautiful custom closet in a master bedroom, but a professional closet design can also provide an amazing makeover for garages, walk-in pantries, laundry rooms and home offices. Garages especially can use an expert eye. “Florida homes don’t have basements, we have garages,” says Green. “Closet systems can put everything into proper storage so you can take back your garage and actually pull the car in. We’ve also turned garages into high-end man caves for individuals with a car collection.” According to Cleary, garages often function as an entryway to the home and eliminating clutter can make the homecoming more pleasant. “A good storage solution means everything will have its place in the garage with customization geared to lifestyle, which includes golf accessories, fishing poles, bicycles or even children’s toys,” says Cleary. There are hundreds of ways to organize any room in your home and create the master bedroom closet of your dreams. It’s time to turn mere storage into a work of art. Designing Beautiful Spaces

rom the living room to the bedroom, this year’s design trends emulate modern interiors that embrace practical, ecofriendly options without the added expense. Recycled materials and reclaimed wood appear as furnishings alongside captivating 3-D wall art that uses tiles or wood to create a focal point in a room. Trends in the new year also introduce ceramics and glass into interior design layouts, while brassy gold metal tones return in décor and fixtures. In the color wheel, white and beige tones achieve the perfect complement to tribal patterns and other striking designs. For people who prefer more vibrant colors, reds and oranges make a comeback in the living and dining areas. While color does make a statement in these rooms, lighter hues prevail in the bedroom where minimalist décor and soothing tones rejuvenate and pamper the mind and body. Florida décor tends to follow a modified style, especially in areas surrounded by shimmering turquoise waters and bountiful sunshine, according to interior design expert Suzan Decker Ross, ASID, of Decker Ross Interiors in Clearwater. According to Ross, she doesn’t see a significant shift among clients to include the new styles, but she does see a change in the homeowners’ perspectives toward interior design. “The biggest shift we have seen is that instead of doing just one room, clients are gutting places and redoing the whole thing. They are hiring designers to furnish these homes from top to bottom,” she explains. Many of her clients are older and relocating from the north, especially the Midwest, and buying a second home. They’re opting for coastal beach designs mixed with some furnishings that favor longevity, rather than the season’s current trends. Ross favors darker hues of navy, indigo, midnight blue and emerald in designs, that create an earthy, organic decor with a modern twist. Natural wood remains popular, and she’s

incorporating it in new ways, arranging artful wall treatments in the bedroom and on ceilings. Softer white and beige tones define the European-styled kitchen area, designed as a central gathering area for cooking meals and sparking conversations and togetherness among friends and family. The design firm takes a focused approach to personalize a client’s decor throughout the home, using heirlooms or other pieces they have collected on their travels. “By taking a piece of art or a personal memento they brought home from their travels, we reframe the item and create a new statement that is a reflection of their lifestyle,” she says. A self-described avid traveler around Florida and Europe, Ross visits local art shows and marketplaces and buys select pieces from area designers and artisans to integrate into her design projects. “We try to create more unusual ‘aha’ memory points throughout the home. Some of the creations are displayed on the walls and ceilings, versus just hanging a piece of art,” Ross says. That “wow moment,” as she describes, may cost clients a little more in their design budget, but it becomes a signature piece in a room and can change the look and feel of that space. Small details are also important to completing a room’s design – from luxurious fabric to favorite pillows. Ross says designing is a systemic balance of harmonizing a room’s furniture pieces with different textures and colors to create balance. “When you walk into a room, you should feel embraced by the space, not overwhelmed,” she reflects. “The biggest compliment I get from clients is that their home feels like them. That’s my way of giving back to make their lives better.” G

A Taste of Spain at Bulla Gastrobar

The concept of Bulla was born in Miami, where there are a lot of flavors and influences from different areas.

n a recent Thursday night in SoHo, Bulla Gastrobar (pronounced boo-ya) was buzzing with energy: every seat at the bar taken by guests enjoying the last moments of happy hour, or Bulla Hour as it’s known in the restaurant. Tables inside and out filled with parties sharing stories and laughs over tapas and raciones, or small sharing plates. The bartenders shaking up freshly-crafted, flavorful cocktails. At the helm of Bulla Tampa is Executive Chef Keith Williamson. He brings with him 25 years of culinary experience, most recently as executive chef for Datz Restaurant Group, and prior to that at Appetit Catering at Eckerd College, Jackson’s Bistro & Sushi and Ocean Prime Tampa. Hailing from the City of Brotherly Love, Chef Keith studied culinary arts at The Restaurant School in Philadelphia. He went on to hone his craft in San Francisco and Italy, where he worked alongside the executive chef of the Michelin One Star restaurant CaPeo in Genoa. As servers scurried about delivering hot and cold tapas and cocktails to the guests, Chef Keith pointed to a few of the classics on the menu. Some notables are the Tortilla Española, a traditional Spanish potato omelet; Pintxos, skewers of marinated pork or chicken; and Croquetas, served traditionally with ham, or chicken with a hint of kimchi. When asked why a Korean flavor like kimchi was added to a traditional Spanish dish such as Croquetas de Pollo, Chef Keith explained that it’s a twist on tradition. The concept of Bulla was born in Miami, where there are a lot of flavors and influences from different areas, and those flavors and influences are reflected in the dishes found throughout Bulla’s menu. Ensalada de Pulpo is another dish that Chef Keith pointed out as one of his favorites: octopus served atop a salad of heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, croutons and lemon. The octopus, along with the Pintxos and a handful of other meats and fishes on the menu, is prepared using a Josper charcoal oven-grill imported from Spain. “I don’t think you can find better octopus anywhere,” said Chef Keith. “The tender, warm octopus served with the cool tomato and cucumber salad…” In addition to the tapas Chef Keith highlighted, Bulla guest favorites include Huevos “Bulla,” a dish of eggs, Serrano ham, potato foam, truffle oil and homemade potato chips that is tossed table-side; and, not surprisingly, the seafood Paella with Valenciastyle rice, red sofrito and saffron. A favorite for dessert is the Churros Con Chocolate served with chocolate and dulce de leche sauces for dipping are a must-have. The next project for Bulla is Luna Lounge, its rooftop lounge that will be opening soon and is unique to the Tampa location. Bulla

Managing Partner Brian Sapoznik, who began his career with Carlos Centurion and the Centurion Restaurant Group as a server about 10 years ago and opened Bulla Tampa, gave us a sneak peek. The lounge’s unobstructed views of downtown Tampa, Raymond James Stadium and beyond will be complimented by its casual vibe and music, and will feature the same drink menu available in the restaurant along with a pared down tapas menu to start. “There aren’t any other views like this in Tampa,” said Brian. “We’re really excited to open Luna to our guests.” Bulla Gastropub serves lunch and dinner daily and brunch Saturdays and Sundays featuring bottomless sangrias and mimosas. Reservations are suggested. Luna Lounge will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Bulla Gastropubs can also be found in Coral Gables (the original), Doral, Winter Park all in Florida and Atlanta, Georgia, and will be opening soon in Plano, Texas and Charlotte, North Carolina. G

Discover CW’s Gin Joint in Downtown Tampa

CW’s vision was to create a place filled with good food, good music and good drinks with a cozy, comfortable and seductive ambiance.

ne step inside CW’s Gin Joint, and you are instantly thrown back to a time when fine spirits were savored in a casual atmosphere that exuded style and gentility, without pretentiousness, where notable and obscure liquors added a warmth and refinement to any conversation. And owner CW, who’s real name is Carolyn Wilson, couldn’t be prouder of the space, the meaning it holds and the happiness it brings to its patrons. As I chat with CW on a Friday afternoon while she drives up to her Ocala farm to check on another one of her passions: her horses, she recounts how the Gin Joint happened as a matter of coincidence. CW, who also owns Gin Joint’s next-door establishment known as The Vault, a 1919 bank-turned-venue space, threw a 1920s-style event in honor of The Vault’s opening night, and again to celebrate its one-year anniversary. People loved the concept so much, she decided to make it a permanent fixture right next door. “It took us about a year, but it has been so much fun,” CW gushes. “We still haven’t finished. I keep changing out the pillows and I just opened up some new oil lamps for the tables. When we finish switching it up, we will just switch it all up again.” CW’s vision was to create a place filled with good food, good music and good drinks with a cozy, comfortable and seductive ambiance. The menu’s rich comfort food includes a delicious variety: cheese boards, raw oysters, entrees like duck confit and short ribs, lobster mac and tropical bananas foster to name just a few. CW herself raves about the Portobello fries; “Chef Gui Alinat makes the best I’ve ever had” and the canned white asparagus. The food has been so popular that the restaurant now also caters under The Vault Catering. But the drink menu alone is reason to comb the establishment’s eclectic list of notable bottles will open a transformative experience for those who like sipping in style. You’ll have trouble deciding on a spirit; a shaken or stirred cocktail with some of the most clever names like Sidecar and Grocery Getter; one of 54 gin options, all of which pair uniquely with tonic; wine … the list goes on. What would CW do? You’ll usually find her with a glass of wine and occasionally with a Gin and Tonic, when she can get it. “It has been so busy that it can be hard to get in. I even have a hard time getting a reservation,” she laughs. “But it is a great problem to have. We couldn’t be luckier, and we are so grateful that people really love it.” With such a warm response, the Gin Joint will be expanding to open up into the park area to include outdoor tables and landscaping. In early 2018, CW will also start working on an additional space within The Vault, the venue’s third floor. This spinoff will be the perfect place for special events with the same ambiance as the Gin Joint.

But even as busy as CW is, she is never too busy to stop and smell the roses and thank all the wonderful folks who have helped her make the Gin Joint a success. “I couldn’t do all this by myself,” she gushes. “I have such a talented team. I just show up and they make everything look so good. I couldn’t thank them enough for their hard work and dedication.” Grocery Getter Ingredients 1.5 ounces of Tito’s vodka .75 ounces of spiced cranberry syrup .75 ounces of lemon juice Directions Add all ingredients to a shaker. Shake and strain over pebble ice. Serve in a sling glass. G

Gulf Beaches A sunset stroll followed by dinner is a Florida beachcomber’s idea of a romantic rendezvous. We always count on Marchand’s at the Don Cesar for special occasions as well as Grace, E & E Steakhouse/Guppy’s and the Clearwater luxury resort restaurants (Opal Sands). Ride in Style. Ride with Moke.

Something Fresh. Something Classic. Something That Epitomized Out-Of-The-Box Thinking. Introducing the new Moke America: A 20th-century collectible car reinvented with 21st-century green-friendly electric power, available exclusively in the USA. The Moke (rhymes with “bloke) is far from a museum piece. Our electric car is versatile, carbon-free and efficient. This upgraded version has more—more legroom, expanded trunk space, a kickin’ sound system and all the benefits of cool, quiet electric power. The Moke stays true to its roots while keeping its headlights on the future. At Moke America, we have reengineered the entire car, while keeping Moke’s classic design and spirit alive. We made the car bigger, wider and stronger. Our car is 2,300 pounds. It's the heaviest Moke ever built. It feels sturdier than the old Mokes. We raised the wheel from a 13-inch wheel to a 14-inch wheel, so it’s taller. We redesigned the windshield so the glass is larger, stands across farther and is higher. We implemented a five step E-Dip process to control the quality of the paint. We also do undercarriage rust proofing to prevent corrosion.

Most importantly, we wanted the Moke to be green. The old Mokes had engines that were very noisy. With ours, it's silent when you drive. You can charge it with a 110-outlet. It plugs into any household outlet. Eight hours gets a full charge, and a full charge can get you almost forty miles of drive time. Moke America is a neighborhood electric vehicle. It’s a car that's driven around town to visit friends, the beach, the supermarket. And it’s better for the environment. The biggest components of the Moke are made in America, including the glass, seat belts, tires and batteries. All ten batteries are made in America. The product is assembled here on American soil. If you have a problem with the batteries, we have them right here on the shelf. It’s easy to use, easy to wash. The whole car can be hosed down, inside and out. We offer a Bimini top so you’re half outdoors, half indoors. The look and design is better than the original because it is longer, wider and closer to an American car.

Hands Across the Bay

t is impossible to adequately describe the impact of Julie Weintraub’s Hands Across the Bay (HATB). It is an organization that is totally dedicated to positively effecting the lives of as many Tampa Bay residents as possible. Julie, along with her husband, Steve Weintraub, are the owners of one of the most successful family-owned jewelry companies in the Southeast, Gold and Diamond Source, located on Ulmerton Road in the Feather Sound/Gateway area. Hands Across the Bay creates, directs, and hosts several fundraising events during the year. The headliner, I think, is Tampa Bay’s Dancing With The Stars (TBDWTS) held each year in October. Attendance is over 600, at a spectacular evening gala, elegance, and intense competition for the “mirror ball” trophy. Record funds were raised in 2017, bringing the total for TBDWTS to $1.75 million. Yours truly was a competitor way back in 2009. The trophy is still on prominent display. The Gasparilla Extravaganza: is held every year in January at the Westin Harbor Island. This year, as always, it provides guests with a front and center viewing station for the annual Tampa Bay Pirate’s Invasion, held on Saturday, January 27, 2018, all day. Proceeds go to HATB to help children and families benefit from HATB programs. Prevention and Awareness: HATB continuously supports efforts to help the Tampa Bay community deal with major social, health and wellness issues like bullying, suicide, domestic violence, animal abuse, LGTBQ rights and more. HATB is committed to providing schools in the Tampa Bay area with anti-violence presentations. Silence is part of what allows the epidemic of dating and domestic violence to continue destroying people’s lives. They speak throughout the community to educate, inspire, raise awareness and break the cycle of abuse. HATB efforts in these areas reflect their commitment to increase awareness of these issues and, once again, have a positive impact on the lives of Tampa Bay individuals and families. Back To School Assistance: Reaches hundreds of Tampa Bay students by providing fully-stocked back packs to needy children (K-12) at the beginning of the school year. Volunteers stuff the donated bags with all kinds of pencils, paper, notebooks, folders and hand-sanitizers provided by generous businesses and merchants.

I

104

Current Needs: This ongoing, every day resource collects donations in cash, as well as pro bono services to support efforts that include legal counsel and transportation, gift cards to make ends meet, and volunteer services. Stabilizing Families: Is an effort that focuses on families that through no fault of their own are facing crisis. The focus is on families who are trying hard and need a hand-up to make it. The Annual Gold and Diamond Source VIP Client Christmas Party: HATB partners with Wheels for Success to provide some extra Holiday cheer to families in need. This celebration showcases the year-long efforts by HATB and the Gold and Diamond Source to kick-off the Wheels of Success “12 Cars of Christmas”. It is a special Holiday party (by invitation only) culminating in providing a gift-loaded automobile to a family in need. That family must demonstrate their ability to maintain the car. Once again, the Gold and Diamond Source, HATB, along with the Wheels of Success, partner to help those who need a helping hand. Dancing With The Stars and all the other events during the year support the various efforts to change the lives of those in need. The flow through of dollars to the recipients is nearly 100% of funds raised, as all overhead and staff is covered by Julie and Steve’s business. There is no road map for this kind of benevolence. It is indeed a “work of heart” that comes from a generation of understanding and giving. Our wonderful Tampa Bay community would not be that wonderful without Hands Across The Bay, and Julie and Steve Weintraub. Thanks neighbor for all you do. The dR BACK PAGE is privileged to tell just a small part of the story behind your past, present and future efforts to make things better for those in need in Tampa Bay.
