OUTSIDE Outdoor General Contracting That’s Specific To You Chris Phillips was designing and building “outdoor living areas” before the term was even commonplace. “Company’s throw the term around now,” says Chris Phillips, general contractor and owner of Phillips Pools & Landscapes. “Many landscapers and pool builders say they specialize in ‘outdoor living spaces,’ but when you hire them to design and build your pool or outdoor kitchen, you realize they’re outsourcing everything.” As a general contractor who specializes in the design and construction of structures such as separate home offices, studios, pools, spas, outdoor kitchens and cabanas, Chris prides himself on the fact that when you hire his team, they do it all. “An advantage of having a designer act also as a general contractor is that it makes projects more efficient and cost effective,” says Chris. “It also offers a sense of security in knowing that your project will be accomplished as you envisioned.” Whether you’re in the market for a simple landscaping job or a $300,000 project with the works, Chris personally conducts your initial consultation. “Our clients want to extend their living areas to the outdoors, but usually they don’t know exactly how,” he says. “We ask them how they plan to use the space and typically give them several destinations. There’s virtually no vision we can’t make a reality.”

dR PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Holiday Issue Dear Reader, Fall is in the air and temperatures have begun to drop (at last). This means that Christmas is just around the corner. But, before you get too excited, there is the Thanksgiving holiday to bring friends, family, and probably football together. Plus some turkey! Our Holiday issue is jam-packed with great gift ideas. Be sure to check out our Holiday Spectacular list of overthe-top gifts, and our feature on how to store wine in unique and creative ways. Also, don’t miss a sneak peek into Hulk Hogan’s spectacular French countryside-style chateau. Hulk has been a great neighbor and friend of the community. We don’t want him to go away, but we understand that it may be time to allow someone else to enjoy one of Pinellas County’s most beautiful landmarks. All our features are special this month because this is a special time of the year. All of us at the duPont REGISTRY™ wish you and yours the very best Holiday Season and hope for the happiest of New Years. We think 2010 will be better than ever and we are prepared to greet you next year with new and better features in every issue. Last, but not least, is our back page feature. Bebe Ziegler is a well-known fashion designer—based right here—in Tampa. We absolutely love getting to know our neighbors and telling you about their accomplishments. It makes us feel good about our home town. If you know anybody that we should know, drop us a line and we will introduce ourselves and them to all our readers (tldupont@dupontregistry.com).

Thomas L. duPont Publisher P.S. If you have the opportunity to stop and thank one of our men and women in uniform for the job they are doing, please do so. We all have much to be grateful for and would not have that opportunity without their devotion to duty and their selfless sacrifices that keep us safe. Thanks and God Bless. 8

A Touch of the Scottish Fiona Craig’s delightful brogue is the first indication you’ve found the real thing, a “Celtic connection” for authentic Scottish and Irish goods like the beautifully crafted Radley handbags, each with a little Scottie dog emblem, or the luxury body and skin care products by Arran Aromatics. Craig moved to Florida from Scotland just a year ago and is an exclusive supplier of many one-of-a-kind items at her new shop, Touch of Tartan. She says ex-pats, like herself, and others with a craving for Scottish and Irish products, will find just about everything here—marmalades, jams, biscuits, porridge oats, Guinness products; and even Irn-Bru, the infamous Scottish “fizzy” soft drink that Craig swears will cure a hang over. 15000 North Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa; 813-962-8244 or www.atouchoftartan.com

Bottle of Wine By Susan B. Barnes

Fruit of the Vine

“Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.” –Benjamin Franklin

N

apa Valley, nestled between two mountain ranges in central California, is known throughout the world for its fine wines that rival those of France. Just over an hour from the bustling megatropolises of San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento, the ease and pace of Napa Valley is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding big cities, and that’s just what makes Napa Valley so appealing to many. A terrific introduction to the incredibly fertile and yielding valley—boasting more than 400 wineries, 120 of which are open to the public—is the Napa Valley Wine Train. Make reservations for lunch or dinner, and climb aboard a vintage 19151917-era Pullman dining or lounge rail car, or the 1947 Vista Dome rail car— each lavishly restored and tastefully appointed—for a three-hour, 36-mile round-trip tour of the valley, from the town of Napa to the village of St. Helena and back.

Onboard, a wine educator will introduce you to the various varietals available, and go more in depth regarding the winemaking process and how wines develop their different flavors, from the grapes themselves to the blending by the winemakers. In addition, your server will point out points of interest along the railway, including different wineries, celebrity homes, and more. During your rail journey, dine on exquisitely prepared dishes as you pass the vineyards and wineries that produce some of the wines you may taste onboard, and some that may even be your favorites back at home. Paired to perfection with the menu, the wines featured during the journey blend with the flavors on the plate, creating a burst of flavor on your tastebuds. After this perfect introduction to Napa Valley, it’s time to go on your own and discover your new favorite winery. dR Photos courtesy of Napa Valley Wine Train

Most of us do not have the space for a fully-loaded walk-in wine cellar (and who has a cellar, anyway?). A wine refrig-erator will be the ideal answer for your holiday entertaining.

Chill

You have a growing assortment of wine that you are not drinking immediately, so you need to think about how to store it - whether you are a wine collector or not. If you plan on seriously investing in wines requiring long-term aging, then you really should consider a fully outfitted wine cellar. A variety of companies offer modular selfcontained wine rooms. If you do not have room for a complete wine cellar, there are many types of wine refrigerators that work as well. They differ from the everyday refrigerator in that they work at higher temperatures (about 50-55 degrees), and they do not remove the humidity from the air. Through a fan system enough air circulates to discourage mold

or mildew. In addition, the compressor is padded to reduce motor vibrations and insulated to keep the temperature constant. There are larger wine coolers with an absorption cooling system, so it is silent and vibration free. Look also at undercounter wine cabinets which have a variable speed compressor with patent-pending convection cooling technology that guarantees that the temperature of the wine inside the compartments does not fluctuate more than 2 degrees. If you are storing both white and red wine, then consider a dual zone wine refrigerator. You can find a three-zone full-height wine cellar, which also properly chills sparkling wines as well. The latest generation

has wine storage units with two separate refrigeration compartments with independent temperature zones and varying capacity. Many of these refrigerators are available in stainless steel but also can be configured with wood or other decorative finishes for placement anywhere in the house. Part of the joy of assembling and storing wine is showing off your collection. Glass-front wine refrigerators should have specially treated glass panes which protect against UV penetration. If it is quality that you want, prepare to invest in a wine refrigerator that is super quiet and made to look like actual furniture. This is the next best thing to having a personal cellar in the basement of your castle.

Serve It Right Don’t confuse storing temperature of wine with serving temperature of wine. Both can be proper measures but can lead to some confusion. It is generally agreed that we Americans serve our red wines too warm and our white wines too cold. To help make this easier for you to remember, Cecelia Messina of Uncorked Wines has contributed the following rules for serving wine:

Proper Wine Serving Temperature: Chill Out Zone Liebherr HWS1800 Integrated Wine Cabinet gives you eye-level wine storage for 18 bottles on 2 shelves in same standard size opening as a built-in coffee maker. $1999. Available at Appliance Gallery, Largo

Full Bodied Sub-Zero 427R Wine Refrigerator offers 2-zone storage for 78 bottles on 8 shelves of wine storage above with 2 refrigerated drawers underneath. $6129. Available at Florida Builder Appliances, Tampa dR

Wine flavors vary depending on the temperature served. Serving wine at its ideal temperature will enhance its characteristics. Preferably, a wine should be chilled a few degrees colder than its ideal drinking temperature. As the wine warms up, it will create vapors from its aromas that will enhance the wine tasting experience. Be careful, however, not too serve a wine too cold as the cold minimizes aromas and it may take extra time to reach the ideal temperature. The exception is aromatic wines; they can be served well chilled without losing aroma. Most regular refrigerators, unlike wine refrigerators, are set at 40º and it may take from 10 to 20 minutes for a wine standing at room temperature to reach the ideal serving temperature. The following section includes a Glossary of Terms which includes some temperature expression such as “room temperature” to give you a better idea of temperature descriptions:

here was a time when barstools had a negative connotation, but not anymore—since the kitchen has become hospitality central. You are probably looking for good seating that bridges the gap between the relaxing area and the work area of your kitchen. Sherri Johns of Annabelle’s Fine Furniture suggests that “barstools are usually the connection between your family room and kitchen, the gathering place of your home." That’s good news because barstools are now available in a myriad of styles and finishes from wood to wrought iron reports Michael Stoddard of Furniture Revolution in Tampa. Because there are so many choices, you need to select wisely and well. First define the style of existing space—contemporary, traditional, eclectic, rustic, or something inbetween. “The barstool should complement your décor,” says Scott Burgess of Drexel Heritage Gallery in Pinellas Park, “but not be outstanding or outrageous.” Check the comfort level by bottom-testing your selections. Think about how you are going to use this stool recommends Burgess. For everyday use? For sometime guests? For drinks only? The answers to these questions will not only help you determine your choice of type of seating but whether your upholstery is in stain-resistant fabric, leather or not at all? Another choice to consider before you make that final selection: Should it have a back or be backless, with arms or without, and also does it have to swivel? Let’s not forget the height and width of the barstool. Generally these stools are available in two heights: 30 inches for bar height for a counter of 40–42 inches and 24–25 inches for a counter height of 36 inches. Remember to allow 10–12 inches for enough room between the stool and the counter or table. This is important whether you are sitting or just perching. Mikael Eskildsen of Scan Designs notes that some have hydraulic lifts that adjust from counter to bar height and back for ease of access. And now let the party begin!

A “

s a girl I would walk these pristine sugar sands and dream of living here on a permanent basis," says Georgine Vitola of her childhood recollections on Clearwater Beach. Those fond sentiments, years later would bring Georgine and her husband John, a successful attorney in Brooksville, along with their children to the emerging West Indies inspired towers that are known as Mandalay Beach Club. Located within the Renaissance District of North Beach, with its immediate access to

eight fabulous restaurants, island shopping, and a laid-back environment that is reminiscent of the Caribbean. John and Georgine bought the sixteenth-floor, southwest-corner Summit Penthouse and refined its panoramic interiors. Adding Travertine flooring, exquisite double-crown moldings, architectural pillars, timeless Bon Vivant builtins, rare granites, tumbled marble, Turkish in-laid mosaic, and a soothing color palette, the Vitolas’ achieved Georgine's childhood dream.

"What I'll miss most are the unobstructed exposures over the gulf, the sunsets, the night-time vistas over Clearwater Harbor and the Sand Key Crescent," muses Vitola as she and John start new chapters in their lives. Situated along one of the most prestigious streets in Pinellas County, lined with sidewalks, vintage oak trees, and neighboring estate homes rests this magnificent French countryside-style chateau. The sevenbedroom, waterfront estate is home to the legendary wrestler, Hulk Hogan. Pulling through the gates onto the brick driveway with lush lawns and petite gardens on each side, a French castle comes to mind, yet upon walking through the front door one becomes reminiscent of a country cottage. With all of the comforts of modern-day technology and the charm of centuries before, this 17,145square-foot estate is one of a kind— spacious yet cozy, grand yet comfortable. Built in 1996 after years of planning, including trips to France to research design and acquire authentic architectural elements and antiques, the house boasts hand-carved pine panels and mantles, antique light fixtures as well as a kitchen replicated after a kitchen in a French castle. Perched on a bluff of nearly two acres overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico, it is the perfect place to relax while capturing the sunset. The property includes a guest apartment, boathouse, and pool with waterfalls as well as two separate garages, two boat lifts, a floating dock, and state-of-the-art gym with a glass atrium, kitchen, bath suite, and massage and tanning room. The masonry and stonewall as well as gates provide optimal privacy. The most expensive property sold in Pinellas County is only two doors down from this Burgundy-style hunting lodge. Although times are currently trying for the real estate market, some properties are too timeless and priceless to be negatively affected by the economy’s turmoil—including this property. This property, offered at $13,900,000, is listed by Peggy Mateer and Molly Lucas of Coldwell Banker, (727) 430-1869, (727) 442-7000, peggy.mateer@florida moves.com or www.floridamoves.com. dR

PANAMERA MAKES ITS DEBUT More than 500 guests welcomed Porsche’s newest luxury sedan— the Panamera—at Reeves Import Motorcars on Wednesday, October 14, 2009. Special guests included: Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America; Vivian Reeves, owner of Reeves Import Motorcars; Michael Bartsch, COO Porsche Cars North America; and J. David Kurtz, vice president of Area South Porsche Cars North America. The Panamera is Porsche’s first fourdoor sedan ever and its first new model in seven years.

Vivian Reeves, owner of Reeves Import Motorcars, Detlev von Platen, president and CEO Of Porsche Cars North America, and Fred Adamczyk, Reeves Porsche Area Representative, welcome guests to the premier of the Porsche Panamera

“This is a historic car launch for Porsche,” said Reeves Import Motorcars. “With this sedan, Porsche is essentially creating a new vehicle concept that is a true sports car with four doors and four seats.” The new Panamera looks like a sports car with the low, aggressive silhouette of a coupe, while still providing four full-size seats and very generous passenger and luggage space. From a performance standpoint, this new Porsche sets new class standards. The 500-hp Panamera Turbo accelerates to 60 mph in just four seconds with a top speed of 188 mph. “The most important task in designing, developing, and building the Panamera was to combine Porsche’s sports car DNA and its historic racing heritage with all the spaciousness and driving comfort of a supremely luxurious full-size sedan,” said Reeves Import Motorcars. “It is the alternative car for the premium customer.” dR

BACKFIN BLUE CAFÉ 2913 Beach Boulevard South, Gulfport. 727-343-2583 or www.backfinbluecafe.com People come for the baked-not-fried crab cakes, which are Maryland style, filled with jumbo lump blue crab and very little else. Presenting the

Aston Martin DBS Volante By Benjamin Greene ompleting the DBS line-up, the new Volante will allow customers to enjoy the combination of the DBS’s benchmark sports car characteristics with the thrills of openair motoring. Featuring a motorized retractable fabric roof, the DBS’s beautiful profile is preserved whether the top is up or down. When the roof is closed at the touch of a button, it provides a warm comfortable ambience and when open, it neatly disappears behind the new tonneau cover. Broadening the DBS range, the DBS Volante will appeal to drivers who wish to combine the excitement of driving a finely-tuned sports car with the invigorating feeling of being open to the elements. This juxtaposition of ultimate performance and openness stirs the senses on any drive whether a exhilarating jaunt on favored roads or a long trip stretching many miles. Conceived as a Volante before coupe production even began, Aston Martin engineers opted for a fabric top to closely follow the silhouette of the current DBS coupe and, due to its lightweight properties, minimize overall weight gain. The top is fully retracted in only 14 sec-

C

onds and at speeds up to 30 mph. Power is provided by Aston Martin’s hand-built all-alloy 6.0-liter V-12 engine producing 510 hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque with a top speed of 191 mph (manual) and a 0-62 mph time of 4.3 seconds. The nature of the V-12, and in particular the torque available at all engine speeds, serves to provide effortless driving in all situations. The DBS Volante draws on the marquee’s extensive experience in designing iconic 2+2s featuring two occasional rear seats, ideal for younger persons or extra luggage. In standard specification, the DBS has a rear-mounted six-speed manual gearbox, while an automatic sixspeed Touchtronic option is also available. As with the coupe, the Volante is offered with carbon-ceramic brakes as

standard providing exceptional stopping power. Benefitting from materials derived from the motorsport and aerospace industries, the bonnet, front wings, and boot lid are made from carbon fiber and all help to reduce weight. The DBS Volante also comes with Bang & Olufsen’s renowned BeoSound DBS entertainment system, featuring 13 speakers as standard equipment. The BeoSound DBS has been expertly tuned by Bang & Olufsen’s sound masters and Aston Martin’s acoustic engineers specifically for the Volante resulting in a system that senses when the roof has been retracted and adjusts the volume to compensate for extra wind noise, providing an unrivalled automotive audio experience. dR
