Operated in a user-friendly manner with a touch screen, the Slyde nonetheless differs from other tactile-operated machinery in that this fine timepiece is protected by a sapphire crystal like any other luxury watch. This year’s statement piece at Audemars Piguet is the most complicated of the Royal Oak editions launched in honor of the evergreen model’s fortieth anniversary. Its 41 mm case was crafted in luxurious platinum and reflects the elegant, extra-thin feel of the original timepiece launched in 1972. Displaying the hours and minutes as well as the power reserve, it is powered by an in-house manually wound tourbillon movement. This limited edition of only 40 pieces retails for $353,600.
A total of eight new models were created for the 2012 celebration of forty years of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak. This version in stainless steel has a case diameter of 39 mm and an ultra-svelte height that mimics the size and feel of the original. New in 1972 was the idea of integrating the bracelet into the case, which allows both elements to feel like a complete unit. Powered by an automatic movement, this unlimited model can be purchased for $22,300.

Believe it or not, this unique automatic timepiece housed in a 46 mm stainless steel case with black PVD finish indicates the hours and minutes conventionally. The dial uniquely comprises two levels: the top houses the hour markers. The second level is divided by the horizon line into black and grey to mimic the look of airplane instrumentation. The horizon line, markers and hands boast photo luminescent coating. On a rubber or canvas strap and limited to just 999 pieces, it retails for $5,000.
Aircraft instrumentation usually includes an altimeter, which is the inspiration for this automatic wristwatch displaying the hours, minutes, seconds and a large date. Harking back to the beginnings of Bell & Ross, the design of the automatic Vintage BR 126 is more traditional than that of its square siblings of the BR01 line. Franc Vila established his eponymous brand in 2004 and designed a watch case that evolved into the “Esprit Unique” shape, now so characteristic of his timepieces. Evolving even further, the EVOS 8 Cobra’s case resembles its namesake: a cobra. This automatic chronograph’s movement is visible through the sapphire crystal case back. Available in a limited edition of 88 pieces in blackened titanium with red gold accents and DieHard Extreme Steel bezel, this timepiece retails for $35,000.
The Intrepido (Spanish for intrepid) is aptly named for its case shape, which is the second evolution of Franc Vila’s “Esprit Unique.” Like the entire collection, this automatic chronograph is hard as nails and resistant to the daily shocks the wrist receives. The bezel of this DLC-coated titanium watch is also crafted in DieHard Extreme Steel and boasts protective inserts around the crown and pushers. On a black rubber strap and with a carbon fiber dial, this 88-piece limited edition costs $22,000.

Franc Vila has been experimenting in new technologies already in use in aerospace and Formula 1 for his unique cases. The first result was the SuperLigero (Spanish for “super light”) material. The other is called NanoTube Titanium (NTT), which we see here on this Intrepido case, a relevant percentage of which is a carbon-graphene composite. The three parts of the automatic chronograph’s case are assembled using NanoTube Titanium screws, which provide further protection against shock ($39,000).
Putting this highly traditional complication into such a modern, innovative, and ultimately sporty “Esprit Unique” case is pure Franc Vila. High-grade blackened titanium for the outer portion of the case ensures optimal sound quality of the gongs according to the designer. The repeater function of the automatic movement rings the time on demand in five-minute intervals while the unique alloy lightnium (main ingredients: aluminum and lithium) is used inside the movement. This limited edition of 88 timepieces is a true collector’s piece at $52,000.

The automatic Type-M1’s 45-millimeter stainless steel case design is distinguished by a fifteenpiece construction whose lugs are expressively architectural. The dial displaying the time, day and date is decorated with a traditional Swiss côtes de Genève pattern, enhancing the architectural feel. Limited to 288 pieces, this automatic timepiece retails for $3,180.
The Swiss automatic movement powering the functions of the 45 mm stainless steel Type-M2 includes a chronograph, which allows the user to stop times with the simple push of a button. The result is visible on the anthracite-colored dial within the totalizers that count minutes (up to 30) and hours (up to twelve). For an added touch of glamour, the bezel is set with 3.95 carats of diamonds. Limited to just 188 pieces, this timepiece can be purchased for $16,280.

Visible beneath an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, this Type-M2’s blue dial is an exercise in order and simplicity. The chronograph totalizers are clearly identifiable thanks in great part to the polish used, which is different than the main dial’s côtes de Genève: “restrained sophistication” is an apt description for this line’s design. Powered by a most reliable Swiss chronograph movement, the Type-M2 in a 45 mm stainless steel case on an alligator skin strap in a limited edition of 188 pieces retails for $4,280.
Before chronographs as we know them had two buttons controlling the start, stop and reset functions, they generally had only one button to perform all three of these tasks. Today, this type of chronograph is known as a “monopusher” chronograph. Gergé’s Type M3 is additionally chronometer-certified, which means that an independent Swiss entity tested and approved its accuracy. The current power forward for the Brooklyn Nets chose a 47 mm rose gold case set with more than five carats of black diamonds on the bezel, lug attachment and even the crown. The carbon fiber dial boasts displays of chronograph totalizers and the date in addition to luminous markers, numerals and hands. Powered by Swiss quartz, this custom timepiece was sold for $8,500.

Originally hailing from the Dominican Republic, García is well-known as a starter for the Sacramento Kings. His watch, though accurately powered by a Swiss quartz movement, is less concerned with timekeeping: discrete miniature hands display the time. This timepiece contains 20 carats of white and yellow diamonds, the latter spelling out his initials on the dial ($50,000).
