INFINITY POOLS

OUTDOOR LIVING ROOMS, PAVERS, AND STONE OUTDOOR KITCHENS Serving Tampa Bay and Sarasota/Manatee counties

Dear Reader, Having just returned from the fabulous week-long auto extravaganza in Monterey, Carmel and Pebble Beach, California, I have cars on my mind. While there, I was fortunate enough to drive the 2010 BMW 760i luxury sedan. The 554 hp, V-12 makes this luxurious four-door sedan a real sport sedan with all the creature comforts. For those of you who desire a smaller (less expensive) version of this grand touring automobile, please see the dR AUTO article featuring the BMW 335i convertible for a different kind of experience of the BMW pedigree. With the fall weather upon us, I hope you will enjoy reading the dR TRAVEL article which features Beautiful Bed & Breakfasts in the New England countryside. This area is truly worth the trip for a fall foliage vacation. Since this issue is our Home Design & Furnishings issue, Mediterranean living is highlighted within these pages, in separate articles featuring home kitchens, baths, furniture and accessories. In dR HOME, you will see European furniture styles from local interior designers and furniture stores. Check out their web sites to find even more choices of these refined pieces. There is even an article on Italian wines that I know you will enjoy in the dR WINE section. Now that school is in session once again, we’ve highlighted OPEN THE DOORS To the Possibilities of an Independent Education in our dR FEATURE. There is some great advice in this article on how to choose an independent school, as well as providing you with a list of options in the Tampa Bay area. I am confident you will find something of interest in these pages, whether it be in one of these sections referenced above or in one of the many other articles throughout the magazine. ENJOY!

Thomas L. duPont Publisher P.S. This issue has an unusual and healthy use for salt somewhere in its pages. If you are the first person to email me with the name of the company and the correct page number of the article, you will win a free one-year subscription to this magazine. tldupont@dupontregistry.com Correction: On page 47 in Celebrate the “Top 10” Hot Designers, Leigh and Leslie Keno’s designs are available at Robb & Stuckey stores throughout Florida not Design Interiors Furniture Showroom.

Charming & Eclectic Cabana Café and Gifts is Tina Marie and Javier Avila’s newest restaurant in the delightful downtown Dunedin area. The Avilas, who own Casa Tina and Pan y Vino, have taken the former Purple Moon boutique and turned it into a charming café, gift shop and outdoor lounge with live Latin jazz and acoustic guitar music. The restored historic cottage that houses Cabana Café is pure vintage old-style Florida. A casual menu includes salads, soup and paninis, as well as deserts, coffee, wine and beer, with many organic selections. In the shop you’ll find hand-made jewelry, glass art, garden accessories, mobiles, candles and more. Frequent fundraisers support local music and the arts, as well as Dunedin Harvest, a community gardening effort. 365 Main Street, Dunedin. 727-734-9226. www.cabanacaveandgifts.com

A Dash of Salt Salt therapy for breathing problems, an all-natural treatment called Speleotherapy, has been standard in Russia and Eastern Europe since the 1800s, when patients benefited from the healing effects of underground salt caves. Today salt rooms above ground recreate the cave environment. In Tampa, Breathing Clear introduces the treatment locally for the first time. Imported blocks of salt from the Ukraine line the walls of each treatment room. Patients sit in a comfortable chair and listen to music or read a book while microscopic particles of salt diffuse into the air, penetrating the lining of the lungs and sinus cavity, helping thin and clear mucous and making it easier to breathe. It’s especially beneficial for asthma, allergies, bronchitis and other respiratory conditions. 3838 Neptune Avenue, Tampa. 877-360-7258. www.breathingclear.com

Coffee and a Cigar Rich Cuban coffee can now be found in downtown St. Petersburg starting at 7 a.m. Perk up with a double or triple espresso—the stronger, the better, at Havana Room Café, the newest addition to Greg Haddad’s popular Central Cigar lounge. Decorative cigar boxes line the counters in the café, but no cigar smoking allowed until later in the day. Order your coffee with flavorings and a traditional Cuban pastry filled with guava, cheese or pineapple and made fresh in Tampa. The pastries are offered only until 2 p.m., but coffee is served until the lounge closes. For an evening treat, try the Don Juan with dark rum, Kahlua and cream. “Customers had been asking for the Cuban coffee experience,” says Haddad. “It was a natural extension for us.” 237 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg. 727-898-2442. 14 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Art, Food and A View Sono Café, a mini-satellite of Tampa’s landmark Mise En Place restaurant, sits at the back of the new Tampa Museum of Art, where there is a fabulous view of the Hillsborough River, children playing at Curtis Hixon Park and the minarets at the University of Tampa. The small café is ideal for an informal lunch or dinner after a tour of the art museum. On-site chef, Chris Mascia just moved here from New York City, where he ran the café at the Museum of Modern Art. He expects the menu to expand this fall with more entrees, but currently there are a variety of gourmet salads, upscale paninis, coffees and deserts. Open during museum hours—late on Thursday until 9 p.m. 120 West Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. 813-274-8130. www.tampamuseum.org

Heavenly Pairings Cinnamon pear balsamic vinegar and blood orange olive oil blend to create the Poached Pair. Dark chocolate balsamic and smoky chipotle olive oil make Holy Mole. And tangerine balsamic and sweet lemon olive oil are perfect in The Sorrento. A self-described “foodie” and former investment banker, James Regan has opened Kalamazoo Olive Company to showcase small grove artisan olive oils and balsamic vinegars from around the world. Both the quality and the freshness of the oils gives them the “WOW” factor, says Regan. All flavored oils are fused. Ask for a taste of the “traditional” balsamic from Modena, Italy, aged 18 years in a barrel. It’s heavenly, like a fine wine. Bottles are UV-rated to prevent sunlight from degrading the taste. 449 Central Avenue, Suite 100, St. Petersburg. 727-258-4925.

Fresh on Franklin Imagine a cereal bar with 40 different kinds of cereal, paired with milk that you can spike with flavorings like banana, strawberry or Bailey’s (non-alcoholic). At Fresh, cereal is not just a breakfast food, it’s also a snack—think Golden Grahams with minimarshmallows and chocolate chips. There’s also a frozen yogurt bar with a dozen flavors, both soft serve and hard serve; a panini station with 18 signature pressedsandwiches, and a salad emporium with specialty salads and salad dressings made from scratch. Order from the menu or let your imagination and taste buds guide you to a custom creation. Co-owners Bryan Goodell and Jeffrey Morzella have a mantra of fresh as possible, fast service for the business crowd and affordable—lunch under $10. 120 West Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. 813-274-8130. www.tampamuseum.org

At the Hangar Watch the planes take off and land at the Hangar Restaurant and Flight Lounge, the new venue at Albert Whitted Airport on the St. Petersburg waterfront. The restaurant takes up the entire second floor of the airport terminal with floor to ceiling windows offering a great view of the runway. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Hangar also features a Sunday brunch buffet for just $12.95 per person. A small banquet room is available for special events. Come for the live jazz on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. The menu is varied—from salads and Philly steak sandwiches to mussel bowls and pork tenderloin. The small airport handles both private and commercial aviation and is home to about 185 aircraft. 540 1st Street SE, St. Petersburg. 727-823-PROP. www.thehangarstpete.com

Downtown’s Gourmet Market Downtown St. Petersburg’s first high-end specialty market, Messineo’s Gourmet Market, is now open. The grocery offers a variety of organic produce; grassfed, no growth hormone chicken, beef and bison; seafood; an olive bar, and a good selection of prepared foods to go. There’s also a coffee bar, imported cheeses and a small bakery with breads and desserts like Tiramisu, a rich and creamy variety from Italy that is owner Jim Mason’s favorite. About 10 different wraps and paninis are made on-site, including a dessert-like one with pear, brie and honey. A bulk section with dried fruits, granolas, nuts, beans, shortbread cookies and gourmet snacks is set up like an old-fashioned penny candy store with items in big glass jars. 179 1st Avenue North, St. Petersburg. 727-895-1400. dR

urniture in the European tradition never goes out of style. If you are seeking a welcome refuge from the cold, hard edges of modern furnishings, then look again at Mediterranean designs. It is no longer dark and forbidding. “In fact, what really attract many customers are the lustrous wood tones and soft curves of these traditional European designs,” says Carol Brawner of Bronze Lady Home Furnishings in Madeira Beach. “And then they look closer and realize that the functionality is a huge plus as well.” Scott Burgess of Heritage House Interiors in Pinellas Park adds that,

There was time when Mediterranean furniture referred to ornate, heavily carved pieces. Today, these refined furniture styles that originate in southern Europe add sophistication to any room.

“Many clients turn to these styles when only the ‘right’ piece will do…The scale and design of beds or chests can really take the spotlight in a room.” The latest generation of the unique furniture has reinterpreted familiar styles to suit today’s home with its open plans and larger rooms. The good news for Tampa Bay residents is that the wood tones have become lighter, almost muted. Sherri Johns of Annabelle’s Fine Furnishings in Odessa says, “This reinvented style makes the new furniture blend better with existing pieces. Add a beautiful table or chest and you can transform the personality of a space. The

lighter warm finishes add a glamorous yet relaxed feel.” Mary Jo Polo of Design Interiors in Tampa interprets, “Today’s Mediterranean style is a style that has become clean in lines. It is kind of a less-is-best style. As you and I know, we live a fast paced hectic lifestyle. Some of what we carry, such as the Hooker’s Sanctuary collection has a timeless design. It is graceful and calm. You can create a Sanctuary in your home. After all, we all need a place to get away from it all.” “This is a warm and inviting style that has timeless appeal,” suggests Kris Kolar, Vice President Interior Design, Robb and Stucky Interiors. “Soft and comfy seating does not have to be contemporary. The traditionalists prefer the layered look that appears as though furnishings were collected over time.” Most of her clients want elegant settings for their European furniture but in rooms that are both cozy and intimate.”

un baked beaches with deep blue waters, beautiful countryside resplendent with rustic and elegant architecture, and a relaxed way of living that celebrates friends and family. These are all common threads that tie various parts of the Mediterranean together, whether in the heart of Tuscany, French countryside, or Spanish coast. It’s no wonder Mediterranean kitchen design remains so popular and celebrates this way of life. The kitchen is the heart of the home —the perfect place to bring friends and family together to enjoy good times and special occasions. A Mediterranean kitchen provides the perfect backdrop and sets the tone for living la dolce vita. Warm and inviting colors, timeless materials and design styles, and elegant accessories are some of the details needed to evoke that Mediterranean flavor. Some of Florida’s best go-to sources for quality design share some advice on creating, or refining, this look at home. Cabinetry is perhaps the most dominant architectural element in the kitchen. It certainly is one of the most expensive and an area prone to mistakes. In Mediterranean kitchens, cabinetry is functional, yet beautiful and timeless. It is best to opt for simplicity when choosing cabinetry designs, a lesson learned as Mediterranean style has evolved since first making a splash on the design scene. A movement away from heavier designs and more ornate appliqués to a more clean-lined approach is the trend, with good reasoning behind it. “It is easier to change the smaller things in your kitchen than your cabinetry,” advises Charna Kety, designer with Allikristé Fine Cabinetry and Kitchen Design, a familyowned and operated full-service design center with three showrooms on Florida’s west coast. “A lot of ornate details are brought out more now in the kitchen’s

lined cabinetry is another great tip Kety has to give your kitchen a more updated Mediterranean feel.

Nancy Braamse, CMKBD, owner of Olde World Cabinetry, a renowned fullservice design center, echoes the sentiment that Mediterranean cabinet styles should have simple, clean lines. “A true Mediterranean kitchen uses different cabinetry colors so it looks like it has evolved over time, not like it is brand new,” she adds. Recessed panels are a nice cabinetry detail to incorporate in a Mediterranean kitchen. Wood choice is also important and can enhance the look dramatically. “Using older wood is a great choice in a Mediterranean kitchen,” Braamse notes. Her recommendations include rustic alder, which has beautiful knots, or rift cut oak, which has a beautiful grain pattern. While cabinetry is an important part of the kitchen, what you choose to top it off with is just as important. Natural stone makes the perfect choice for a countertop. “Granite and marble are a perfect complement to a Mediterranean motif,” says Larry Crowley, president of Cutting Edge Granite, a family-owned and operated natural stone fabrication company. “This look doesn’t go out of style.” He suggests pairing darker colored cabinetry with lighter colored marble and granite to lighten the overall kitchen design. No longer relegated to just an afterthought, appliances are becoming standouts in their own right. Color is making a comeback, a look that pairs nicely with Mediterranean design. “Manufacturers such as BlueStar, Viking, Bertazzoni, and ILVE are introducing ranges with colored porcelain doors instead of stainless,”

Appliance Gallery, Inc.

says Lynn Krislin, owner of Appliance Gallery in Largo. Matching range hoods are also available. Her top choices are burgundy colored ranges with brass trim from Viking or ILVE. “This is a very nice look which really adds to the Mediterranean style,” she says. While this look can enhance a Mediterranean kitchen, it is important to heed this expert’s advice. “It is best to cover the dishwasher and refrigerator in

paneling, so that it allows the colored range to be the focal point,” she notes. Another way to make your range the focal point and give it an authentic flair is by using Mediterranean tile as an accent on a stone or paneled hood. And lastly, refrigerated wine storage is becoming an increasingly popular feature, with good reason. “Everyone strongly associates wine with the Mediterranean,” Krislin explains. dR

Mediterranean Baths A Natural Choice

reate a beautiful refuge from the hustle-and-bustle of everyday life, a place that is both elegant and understated. Mediterranean baths make use of beautiful materials like aged metals, natural stone, and intricately designed tiles to create an atmosphere that envelopes you with its warmth. No longer relegated to a utilitarian afterthought in home design, baths are taking center stage in importance on par with kitchens. Take a page out of the Mediterranean bath design book to create this look at home with some great advice from design experts. One of the best reasons to incorporate a Mediterranean bath in your home is perhaps one that some are not aware of. “Mediterranean is a “green” style of design because it uses lots of natural products and reuses material, like natural stone,” says Nancy Braamse, CMKBD, owner of Olde World Cabinetry, a full-service design center in Largo, Florida. In a Mediterranean bath, cabinets are more freestanding, furniture-like pieces and usually use dark, natural woods. The style is simple, rather than ornate. “The less ornate cabinetry you have, the better,” Braamse adds. “The emphasis is on the beautiful tilework.” Beautiful, natural mosaics are prevalent in Mediterranean tilework and the perfect choice in the bath. While the Mediterranean look has expanded to be a more broadly used term, there are certain design principles that hold true. “A comfortable atmosphere is what designers and builders are trying to achieve,” says Larry Crowley, president of Cutting Edge Granite, a full-service natural stone manufacturer with locations in Tampa, Largo, and Ft. Meyers. Higher ceilings, distressed finishes on cabinets, and columns are some ways to give baths a more relaxed, airy feel. Natural stones like marble or granite

common Mediterranean design feature.” Larger soaking tubs or tubs-for-two can help make that time more pleasurable. Add additional flourish to the bath design with well chosen accessories. Plumbing fixtures, lighting, and sinks all present wonderful opportunities to enhance a Mediterranean bath design. “An oil rubbed bronze finish is popular on plumbing and lighting fixtures in the Mediterranean style,” says Michele Hohman, designer with Ferguson Enterprises, a nationwide wholesale plumbing and building distributor with a showroom in Tampa. The dark brown finish gives fixtures a warm, handmade, and aged look, rather than a refined one. Matching the finish on plumbing and light-

ing fixtures is preferred. Great attention to detail is given to Mediterranean lighting fixtures, from their look to the light they cast. The fixtures themselves tend to be ornate, with intricate designs, like scrollwork or leaf motifs. “Ornate is the key with lighting fixtures in Mediterranean design,” Hohman says. A softer glow and warmer ambience is achieved by using linen or gold colored glass globes, instead of white. Lastly, an Alabaster, limestone, or colored glass vessel sink is a perfect choice in Mediterranean bath design. “Typically, the goal in Mediterranean design is to bring the outside in,” says Karen Alonzo, lead designer with Kitchen, Bath and Beyond in Tampa, a full-service remodeling company specializing in kitchens and baths. Choosing materials in earthtones is a wise decision, especially in terms of the home’s resale value. This is very easy to accomplish since Mediterranean design emphasizes natural materials and finishes. Borrowing popular Italian design elements to create a Tuscan style is a trend in Florida, according to Alonzo. Using travertine or marble on floors and countertops is a perfect choice. “This is a honed look, not a polished one,” says Alonzo. “It is also popular to use a chiseled edge or distressed look in Mediterranean design.” Natural stone makes a wonderful selection, but does require maintenance. A great alternative is to use porcelain tile, which is both maintenance-free and high-quality. “Italians are the best at making porcelain tile that perfectly mimics travertine or marble,” she notes. Tile can create a beautiful focal point in a Mediterranean bath. Colored glass tile inserts are great to use as a decorative element on an accent wall in areas like the shower or as a mirror surround. One last bit of advice from Alonzo is imperative to remember. “It is important to incorporate the Mediterranean look throughout the house so the design flows better and doesn’t clash.” dR Above: Ferguson Enterprises Left: Kitchen Bath & Beyond

few years ago, when I visited the Mediterranean, I had no idea what to expect other than images I’d seen in magazines. I wasn’t prepared for the sheer beauty in everything I saw—from the ruins of Pompeii and Athens to the bleached white domes of Santorini against bright blue skies to the hills of Sicily and Rhodes. Throughout my trip, I found pieces here and there to bring back to use in my home to recount my memories. We’re fortunate here in the Tampa Bay area to have stores that specialize in Mediterranean accessories and furniture for the home—and you don’t even have to jet to the Med to find them!

While on your travels, if you came across a piece of furniture or a fixture and would love to have in your own home, look no further than Italian Cast Stone Accessories in Tampa. “Oftentimes, clients see something during their travels that appeals to them,” said Rosy Conto, president. “They bring a picture to us, and we carve it and make it for them, completely customized.” Conto continued that, being here in Tampa, which is such a historical area, many people fall in love with the Mediterranean and Tuscan looks, and want to bring that feel into their homes. She sees a lot of attention to detail going into the oven hoods in kitchens, and ornate fireplaces.

Judy Bailey of Brandy Interiors in St. Petersburg finds that her clients are more on the contemporary side, and while they aren’t looking to redecorate entirely, they are looking for a way to refresh their rooms, and what they may already have. “Damask and Old World prints on a streamlined sofa give you the look without the weight,” said Bailey. “We can take a traditional camelback sofa and put a linen or simple fabric that can fit into any room.” Bailey also advises her clients to find furniture that is more universal, and then change out a room’s accessories to suit their tastes as they change. She also stresses to not underestimate the power of repainting—it does wonders. According to Sherri Johns, showroom manager at Annabelle’s Furniture in Odessa, whatever your taste in furniture—from traditional to contemporary and everything in between—you can still have a Mediterranean feel. “It’s in the way that you accessorize—which fabrics you use, the artwork, your surroundings in general—and you can accomplish a Mediterranean feel with whatever your taste in furniture,” said Johns. “There’s so much to choose from these days, you can take a blank space and, with accessories, create a room.” For example, in the bedroom, no matter what type of bed you may have picked years ago, choosing the right bedding can transform the space into

Judy Dechant, design consultant and president of Mar-Go Interiors, and her team focus primarily on custom window treatments, to finish the room. “A lot depends on the colors that are in the room, and the feel that the customers are going for,” said Dechant. “If the colors are darker, and the furtniture is of a heavier weight and upholstery, we’re not typically going to go light and airy on the windows.” That being said, Dechant says it depends on her customers’ interpretation of Mediterranean that most inspires her team’s work. “Some think Italian or Greek Mediterranean, while some think Spanish, especially in this area. “We work with what our customers have, and ask customers to expand upon their ideas of

Mediterranean to determine which direction to go,” said Dechant. Once her clients’ budgets and taste are known, Dechant spends a lot of time thinking about the perfect window treatments for each client, whether that be drapery panels embellished with a beautiful trim; shutters; or cornices with drapes underneath. The end result is to create a look that balances the other accessories and furniture in the room, while softening the edges of the windows. “I love what I do!” exclaimed Dechant. But it’s not just indoors that deserves special treatment. Many people take their design aesthetic outside, and Jay Lombardi and Melissa White and their colleagues at Patio Land help make that happen. “Weatherprints by Open Air Designs are art for the outdoors, and provide Mediterranean looks,” Lombardi said. In addition to artwork, clients may install fountains to get the feel of the Med, Lombardi continued. Open the Doors

To the possibilities of an Independent Education

P

By Dr. Barbara H. Hodges

roviding multiple educational choices to augment the quality of life, the Greater Tampa Bay Area boasts the presence of 32 independent schools accredited by the Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS). The next few pages will serve as an introduction to these FCIS schools as well as other independent schools in this area, advantages of those schools, and guidelines for choosing an independent school.

Advantages of an Independent School First, independent schools, as part of their inherent nature, are founded by a group of individuals to serve a particular mission. As independent entities, these schools have the freedom within that mission to allow their faculties and staffs to design educational curricula to meet the individual needs of their students, purchase high quality textbooks and related ancillary equipment and materials, and choose nationally normed standardized tests relevant to their educational programs, rather than using state mandated curricula, textbooks, or testing. Independent schools aspire to meet high academic standards, while promoting within their students the development of character and a concern for the greater good. Another advantage of independent schools is small class size. According to statistics collected by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the 2008-09 median student to teacher ratio in independent schools across the nation was 8.6 students for every one teacher. Within these smaller classes, more individual attention may

be given to students. In addition, NAIS Statistics for 2008-09 reported the following median class sizes: preschool, 8 students; kindergarten through grade 5, 12 students; middle school, 15 students; and high school, 18 students. To promote the building of community, independent schools tend to be smaller in overall student enrollment. NAIS reported that the average enrollment in an independent school in the 2009-10 school year was 504 students, and the median student enrollment for that same year was 404 students. Independent schools ascribe to the belief that the size of the school community makes a difference in how a student is known within that environment. These smaller learning communities promote students being known not only by their current teachers, but also by the entire faculty and staff. Finally, independent schools encourage strong parental involvement. Parents are seen as partners in their children’s educational endeavors. In a national survey conducted in 2008-09 by Independent School Management (ISM), parents, with children attending independent schools, cited the reasons that they were continuing to choose independent schools, even in the wake of a stressed economic environment. The top five reasons given were safety, faculty caring and concern, character education, faculty expertise, and academic rigor.

Steps in Choosing an Independent School 1. Decide as a family on the characteristics of an ideal learning environment for your child(ren).

2. Do your homework. Investigate the different independent schools in your geographic area, paying particular attention to details such as mission, philosophy, accreditation, curricular offerings, and extracurricular opportunities. 3. Make sure that the school mission and philosophy are compatible with your educational desires and dreams for your children. 4. Consider the tuition and any other additional costs. Is it compatible with your budget? If not, investigate the availability of financial assistance. 5. Schedule visits to several schools. Go prepared with questions that you would like answered. Ask questions about the school curriculum, faculty qualifications, and details concerning the admission process. In addition, ask about any open house and/or special events scheduled for the future. 6. During your school visits, be sure to observe students in their learning environment. Are they actively engaged in learning? Do the students appear happy? Can you picture your child in that learning environment? 7. Attend open houses and special events if available. 8. Finally, choose the school that will best serve the needs of your child or children. The greater Tampa Bay area offers many fine independent schools. On the following pages are basic facts about each of these schools, along with photographs of student life on several school campuses. A photograph may be worth a thousand words, but a visit to some of these schools may actually provide the key to the door of independent education. www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay 35

The twotime, breast-cancer survivor knows that every day is a treasure. “I wasn’t promised today,” Sherry says, with a lighthearted delivery. “Seven years ago, I could have been gone, so today is a gift.” Back in 2001, Sherry was offered a job as Tampa Regional Director of a cancer camp headquartered in Upstate New York. Two years later, after finally making the mammogram appointment that she kept putting off due to a busy schedule, Sherry was diagnosed with breast cancer. After several lumpectomies, breast cancer reared its ugly head again six months later and Sherry fought back with a double mastectomy. Today, she is cancer free. “You can’t worry about what if; you just have to deal with today and today I’m good,” Sherry explains. Not only is she good, but she is making sure others are more than good around her with Faces of Courage, the non-profit organization Sherry started once she learned that the cancer camp she was running was closing its offices. The camp’s founder had thought Sherry couldn’t run the program while undergoing treatment, but she sure showed them. She opened Faces of Courage in

January 2004 to provide life-enriching experiences to kids, women and families touched by cancer and/or blood disorders. “It’s a huge labor of love,” says Sherry. And love—and courage—is exactly what Sherry is spreading all around the Bay area through her camps, fundraising and public-speaking engagements. Her personal words and inspirational messages have encouraged many, but Sherry says there is just something about talking to a peer that can give you something that the white coats (aka doctors) can’t, and the 3-Day event might bejust the place to find it. “To walk next to someone for three days that have walked in your shoes is a very moving experience,” Sherry says. And what’s Sherry’s biggest message to anyone going through breast cancer? “You are not alone. You can do this. Thousands of us have done this and you can, too.” For more information on Faces of Courage, visit FacesofCourage.com. dR

Walk This Way On Friday, October 29, a gaggle of pinkclad walkers will take to the pavement for the 6th annual Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. Participants will enjoy Tampa Bay’s white-sand beaches, cool gulf breezes and stretches of shady parks during their three-day, 60-mile walk, all while raising money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. Sharing heartfelt stories and lots of laughter, walkers will stroll roughly 20 miles each day, stopping frequently for supplied food and beverages. At night, they’ll set up camp and share life experiences over hot meals and live entertainment near their cute, two-person tents. And each morning, they’ll pack on their pink accessories and set out again, fueled by the courage of survivors, the commitment of each walker and in the honor of loved ones. Visit the3day.org for more information.

ach fall, the New England countryside is ablaze with color. Fiery reds, golden yellows, and brilliant oranges all herald in Mother Nature’s annual event, the autumn leaves changing color. The chance to see the show stopping fall foliage entices people from around the world to make the pilgrimage to New England. Comprised of Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, New England makes for a wonderful vacation destination for families, friends, or couples. Depending on the weather and the location, the peak time for viewing fall foliage is September through October. Beautiful bed and breakfast accommodations—from the cozy and the quaint to the classic mountain lodge—make the perfect home base for a fall foliage tour. These places are open yearround and are great escapes— each season offers its own unique beauty and an abundance of activities. Perhaps it is the fleeting beauty of the fall foliage that inspires people to decamp to the many charming towns and gorgeous countryside of New England and soak up this seasonal show. Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure: fall is not to be missed.

View from the Mountain Top Inn & Resort

The Granite State is home to one of the most beautiful spots to view fall Foliage. North Conway, located in northeast New Hampshire, is one of the best known towns in the Mt. Washington Valley area. Set among the breathtaking backdrop of the White Mountains, North Conway has charming shops, restaurants and accommodations. Providing the perfect place for a romantic getaway is the Wyatt House Country Inn. Built in 1900 as a private residence, the Wyatt House Country Inn, located on the banks of the Saco River, has been a bed and breakfast for thirty years. “Our rooms are appointed in a romantic setting and decorated in the Victorian style,” says Elaine DiRusso, co-owner of

the inn. Each of the eight bedrooms have private baths; five have two-person Jacuzzis, fireplaces and private decks with beautiful views. “North Conway is full of local activities for viewing the fall foliage, right outside our doorstep,” DiRusso says. Hiking and biking trails, scenic drives, kayaking and canoeing are just some of the many activities you can find here, each offering beautiful and unique ways to enjoy the fall color. The Green Mountain State turns a different hue in fall. Central Vermont is home to Chittenden, a beautiful mountain town surrounded by the Green Mountain National Forest. Located about twenty minutes from the renowned Killington Ski Resort,

Chittenden provides a spectacular spot for fall foliage. Set on 350-acres, The Mountain Top Inn & Resort, built in the late 1800s, is a beautifully restored, classic mountain lodge with an extensive list of first-rate recreational activities right on site. “Once you get here, you don’t need to go anywhere else,” says Diane Dickerman, director of Marketing and Public Relations at the Mountain Top Inn & Resort. One of Dickerman’s favorite ways to view the fall foliage is to be among it on a horseback trail ride, an activity perfect for riders of all levels. A pontoon boat ride on the Chittenden Reservoir is another favorite. “You get great 365-degree views of the foliage this way,” Dickerman says.

A Brand of Tradition and Substance Cantina Novelli Winery

By Amanda Roberts

I

In early spring of 2010, Cantina Novelli—from the Umbrian region of Italy—declared their decision to infiltrate the U.S. wine market with wines produced from prized grapes and enhanced by years of classic Umbrian culture. Cantina Novelli values the marriage of custom and modification by harvesting rare regional grapes and employing advanced technology to create native varietals of the highest quality. The Italian Ministry of Agriculture recently acknowledged the winery’s ambitious efforts by granting Cantina Novelli the Cangrande Award for “Merit in Oenology.” President of Cantina Novelli, Stefano

From the Cube Line comes the 2007 Bianco Cube, a white wine whose straw-yellow color mimics the Spoleto sun and its bouquet commemorates pineapples, peaches, and apricots. The intense flavor compliments white sauce pasta dishes such as fettuccine alfredo and other cream sauces, penne with pesto, sushi, salmon salad, tuna filet and fish carpaccio. Serve at 50-54 degrees fahrenheit. 52 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Novelli, cites the inspiration for the winery as memorable experiences with his grandfather who made the original Novelli wine. Stefano formed Cantina Novelli in 2000 as part of Gruppo Novelli, his family’s food production company. His goal was “to establish Cantina Novelli as a brand of tradition and substance, and to share Umbria and its natural flavors with the rest of the world.” Umbria’s popularity sprouted with the rediscovery of superior grapes such as Sagrantino and Trebbiano Spoletino. Cantina Novelli has established Umbria as one of Italy’s most celebrated wine production areas with wines such as the

Cube Line’s 2007 Rosso Cube is a ruby red wine that emanates scents of Morello cherry and gooseberry. The romantic flavor plays well when served at 54-59 degrees fahrenheit with light pasta dishes such as spaghetti carbonara, orecchiette with olives and sundried tomatoes, penne primavera, chicken salads, stock fish, carpaccio, roasted chicken and turkey, and barbecued steaks.

Trebbiano Spoletino, which trumped thousands of others to represent Italy’s notable enology in France. Stefano has equipped Cantina Novelli with modern machinery that controls the climate of the region. In the vineyards of Montefalco and Spoleto, the winery has installed an underground trickle irrigation system for use in the dry seasons and a weather station to regulate the humidity, temperature, and precipitation levels. With these innovations, Cantina Novelli grows the finest possible grapes for use in wines like Bianco Cube, Rosso Cube, Montefalco Rosso, and the famed Trebbiano Spoletino.

Another red is the 2005 Montefalco Rosso. This purpletipped ruby wine evokes fragrances of ripe red fruit like red currant and wild red berry blended with dark cherry and balsam. At 64-68 degrees fahrenheit, the hearty flavor pairs with dishes such as baked or meat-sauced pastas, aged cheeses, and main courses of red meats or game.

The 2005 Trebbiano Spoletino recently received the Silver Medal Award at the Los Angeles Wine & Spirits Competition. Glistening in gold with green highlights, the Trebbiano Spoletino emits an herbal aroma and exudes a velvety savor, with tangy tastes of citrus and almond. At 54-55 degrees fahrenheit, the Trebbiano Spoletino serves perfectly with first courses and main courses of white meat, roasted fish, and crustaceans. dR

Mom’s Family Recipes Launch a Career

Chef Ryan Mitchell Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

By Catherine Mitseas

yan Mitchell grew up helping his mother in the kitchen. Family photos of the now Chef Partner of Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar in Tampa show the brown-haired little boy tasting recipe after recipe, sweet treats smeared across his face. His passion for food parlayed into a career that started early and took off quickly. Now only 29-years-old, in 2006 Ryan Mitchell joined Fleming’s in Tampa as chef-partner-in-training; he quickly became chef partner for the Knoxville Tennessee Flemings’s and, after one year, returned to Tampa as chef partner, where he took over the larger 400-seat restaurant that is among the premier products of its ownership group, OSI

76 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Restaurant Partners, LLC. Mitchell, as well, had become regional chef partner, a position in which he works directly under Fleming’s corporate executive chef to provide support for the Southeast culinary team. Mitchell credits a strong work ethic for his success, “I’ve always believed in the adage ‘work harder than the person beside you.’” That life-philosophy, and his mother’s tomato casserole, launched the young chef’s career, he says. When only 18-years-old, Mitchell took a job at the Hound Ears Club in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. The native son quickly wowed the club’s snowbirds with dressed-up versions of his mother’s southern specialties—sweet potato casse-

role, rice and chicken, stewed green beans. In addition, a demanding manager gave him license to work throughout the kitchen and the opportunity to learn on the job. “Books were my education for a while. The sous chef allowed me to read for one hour a day,” he says. The next year, Mitchell became sous chef of the Hound Ears and a career was born. The quiet, yet intensely driven chef went on to work at both privately-owned and corporate-run restaurants, building business skills as well as his culinary range. Establishing trust with associates is the cornerstone to a vibrant restaurant, he believes, “If you don’t have their backing, their support, then you can’t have a successful business.”

Season the steak with salt and pepper on both sides. Place the cracked peppercorns on a plate and press one side of the steak into the peppercorns to coat evenly. Pour pomace oil in sauté pan

Use cookbooks as a starting point. You don’t have to go exactly by the recipe, although you should follow the methods outlined by the experts. Instead, add favorite flavors and when you try something new, ask for feedback. Remember to cook for others and adjust your recipes to reflect regional flavors.

Ceviche Tapas Bar & Restaurant By Catherine S. Mitseas

M

owner Philip Orsino. Ceviche’s specializes in Spanish-style tapas, small plates of food created for sharing. Ceviche’s tapas recipes, produced and refined by head chef and founder Antonio Escobar, reflect Northern Spain and Catalan cuisine. The atmosphere is carefully crafted to reflect and immerse its guest in the experience of Spain: an exclusively Spanish and Portuguese wine lists compliments dishes; Spanish musicians play flamenco, mambo, and salsa; Dark red and rich orange interiors, ornate artwork, and elaborate tile-work reflect the culture; imported Spanish ingredients lend authenticity to the dishes. “Where else,” asks Escobar, “can you dance to live music and order food until two or three in the morning?”

Ed Barry

y first memory of Cevíche Tapas Bar & Restaurant is of the white sangria. Sweet and strong, peppered with cut pears, its’ refreshing taste lingers like the scent of a favorite perfume. Once tucked into the first floor of a 1920’s-era condominium on Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, Ceviche’s, established in 1997, has grown and expanded significantly since my first visit long ago. Today, five Ceviches’ thrive in Florida. Each is housed in uniquely wonderful buildings in city-centers. The menu has expanded to more than 100 made-to-order dishes and, on most nights, live high-energy Latin music fills the restaurants till closing. “Eating at Ceviche’s is like taking a two-hour vacation to Spain,” explains

78 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Orsino agrees, “Instead of just providing people with dinner, we try to give them an experience.” That commitment is reflected in the owners’ choice of interesting, often historic buildings. At Ceviche’s newest location, which is in the former Tio Pepe’s bungalow on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard in Clearwater, guests feel as if they are visiting the city of Barcelona as they dine amidst the ironwork and mosaic artwork of 19th Century Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Sarasota’s Ceviche resides in the 1925 Sarasota Times newspaper building and features roof-top dining. Orlando’s location sits on historic downtown Church Street and is within walking distance of nearby communities. It is the food though, that brings in guests and Ceviche’s keeps pleasing customers year after year. The menu offers five styles of ceviche spanning salmon, tuna, scallops, shrimp, fish, and oysters. The tapas frias and tapas caliente selection provides a wide selection of scrumptious, healthy dishes. Its carnes runs from the familiar such as Banderillas Mixtas, a combination of skewered grilled meats, to the more exotic Pato a La Parilla, grilled duck breast served over Chocolate Port Sauce and Higados de Pollo, crispy chicken livers in Spanish sherry tomato sauce. Fresh, spicy summer salads pair with simple choices such as aged cheese with sliced fruits or deviled eggs drizzled with olive oil and cracked pepper. Award-winning Cava sangrias are mixed tableside. Ceviche’s does more than sell food; it grows memories. Maybe this is why it hosts so many showers, parties, and small groups of friends. Not only can everyone find something they would love to eat, but the vista gives them a momentary stopover into old Europe.

2010 BMW 335i Convertible

ue to steep regulations coming down from a number of government agencies regarding fleet gas mileage and emissions standards, manufacturers everywhere are looking at ways to make their cars more green and, in the case of the new 3-Series like a number of other revised luxury models, work a little bit of magic in the process. The new 3.0liter inline six-cylinder engine drops down a notch in the drooling figures from twin turbochargers to a single twin-scroll turbocharger but makes up for that drop by delivering the same 300 hp and 300 lbs. ft. of torque as the outgoing engine and does it without using as much fuel, producing less emissions, and now in a more responsive manner to driver inputs. Like nearly every 3-Series since the dawn of time, the engine endows its owner with a

sort of unqualifiable euphoria because of how smoothly, freely, and happily it revs to redline. It is quick as well, even in the face of BMW’s obviously understated zero-to-60 time of 5.5 seconds with the standard six-speed manual; a six-speed automatic is available as an option. The hardtop convertible that made its debut in 2008 continues on and offers few concessions to the coupe. In fact, the only differences between the two are in the 400 or so pounds that are added through the convertible mechanism and the lack of four-wheel drive as an available option in the convertible (probably to keep the weight gain from getting out of hand). The people that are more in tune with aesthetics than gizmos will have to keep their soft-

The new engine will retain the same 335i name as the previous years but comes with exterior changes via a revised face and rear bumper in both the coupe and convertible forms. The BMW 3-Series Convertible starts at approximately $51,000. Like most BMWs, that price will go higher rather quickly the more options you decide to add, but, as one of the best mid-size luxury convertibles on the market, you pay for what you get. dR

Examining Beliefs Through Artwork A fresh face has appeared on the new 600 block of downtown St. Petersburg. The latest addition to the art district is Donna Gordon and the art collection of her premiere gallery at 625 Central Avenue. Focusing on the figure and modern landscape, the Donna Gordon Gallery and Studio showcases the personal handiwork of Donna’s bronze figures, as well as the work of other regional and national artists practicing contemporary realism. The gallery also serves as a working studio where Donna creates sensuous pieces depicting everyday experiences and the deeper undercurrent of meaning that invigorates each moment of life. Donna purposes to recreate memories with her pieces, explaining, “I have always been interested in telling stories and examining beliefs with my artwork.” Also centrally featured is the late artist Jack Barrett. His extensive selection of vibrant expressionist paintings spreads throughout the gallery and into public and private collections across North America. The opportunity to display Jack’s pieces with the gallery’s opening thrilled Donna, who holds Jack in high esteem as “a wonderful man and an amazing painter.” Jack’s creations appear alongside the sculptures, paintings, works on paper, mixed media, and photography of many talented artists in shows that rotate quarterly.
