SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2015

Dear Reader, The event season is upon us and we have just wrapped up our second annual dR POSH PICKS Awards. Once again, readers voted for their favorite in each category and Readers’ Choice awards were presented at the evening gala at the duPont REGISTRY™ headquarters. We thank all of you for your enthusiasm in selecting these elite businesses and services, as well as our sponsors who made it an evening to remember. If you weren’t able to join us, you can peruse the photos in dR PARTY and check us out on dozens of Facebook pages. Highlighting our special evening of awards was a fabulous fashion show presented by Gioffre Italian Fashions. Angela Gioffre was on hand to personally direct the models up and down the runway in a stunning array of the latest chic and fashionable styles. Federico Lorente of Led Pro Services constructed an incredible runway with distinctive lighting and a sound system that more than complemented the beautiful models. The entire duPont REGISTRY™ showroom was converted into a spectacular “haute couture” setting that was enjoyed by all the guests. Roux provided a terrific menu and complimentary wine and champagne. Sponsors included Jim Henning with Florida Executive Realty, Ferrari of Tampa Bay, Reeves Import Motorcars, Michael Murphy Gallary, and the Tailored Twig. Rob Moorman was there to photograph the event (see page 94). All in all, it was a spectacular and memorable evening. As you can tell by our cover, this issue provides a brief glimpse of Taylor Swift’s “1989 World Tour.” Her next concert is on October 31st right here in Tampa Bay at Raymond James Stadium. This tour has been selling out stadiums since the tour began in May of 2015. For those of you with tickets in hand, you are in for a star-studded show. The tour ends in Australia in December, so this is your best chance to see her live. If your idea of a delightful evening is a quiet night at home, this annual Home Design and Furnishings issue celebrates entertaining in style, and highlights the latest trends in décor. dR HOME talks to local experts about luxurious finishing touches from living art walls to home elevators. Explore the latest, hottest trends in lighting with bejeweled pendant lights to create the perfect ambient environment. Or if you are looking for a spa-like retreat, try an elegant chandelier over the tub in a bathroom. Nothing dresses up a garage like a new Porsche, and you can get all the details on the hybrid 918 Spyder in dR AUTO. We have been happy to host this very car the last couple of months in our showroom during the monthly duPont REGISTRY™ CARS & COFFEE. As always, you are cordially invited to our Cars & Coffee event held the third Saturday of every month from 7 to 9 a.m. If we don’t see you there, we’ll see you next issue with the annual holiday edition.

Warm regards,

TRAVEL

By Susan B. Barnes

THE TALE OF THREE CITIES The Pacific Northwest is literally as far as you can get from the Tampa Bay area within the continental United States, and now is one of the best times of the year to visit the area: the temperatures are cooling off a bit, and the rains will stay away for awhile longer. Here, we take a look at three jewels found in the Pacific Northwest. SEATTLE In the heart of the city center, Chihuly Garden and Glass (chihulygardenandglass.com) mesmerizes when delicate works of glass art and works of Mother Nature combine to create magnificent tableaus. Because of the glass and seasons, each visit to the garden is as different as night and day, and daily Spotlight Talks provide insights and observations into all areas of the garden and galleries. Next door, the EMP Museum (empmuseum.org) is a must-visit for music aficionados, whatever genre is most appealing, from Jimi Hendrix to Nirvana to vintage guitars ranging from the 1770s through today, and much more. Fairmont Olympic Hotel’s Executive Chef Gavin Stephenson takes advantage of famed Pike Place Market (pikeplacemarket.org) just a few blocks away and uses his fresh produce and fish finds in the dishes found in the restaurants he oversees, Shuckers (one of the city’s most well-known oyster bars) and The Georgian (fine dining). For a sweet treat, try a dish made with honey from Chef’s rooftop apiary—he has 18 hives and nearly 2 million bees up there!

VICTORIA The charming island city of Victoria on Vancouver Island, British Columbia is a quick 45-minute float plane ride from Seattle, and a world apart. Because of its mild climate, Victoria is a favorite destination year-round for craft beer enthusiasts, foodies, art connoisseurs, gardeners and nature lovers. Perhaps its most well-known destination, Butchart Gardens (butchartgardens.com) takes advantage of the island’s mild temperatures with blooms year-round. Craft beer isn’t the only libation in the area, however – Victoria is also well-known for its ciders, cocktail scene and wine regions. And for foodies, Southern Vancouver Island has the reputation as “Canada’s Provence” for its high-quality, niche foods… water buffalo, anyone? From Provence to the United Kingdom, English traditions run deep in Victoria, which is more than evident at Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Empress, the grand dame of the harbor. Tea has been served in the hotel since 1908, and 500,000 cups of tea are served to nearly 100,000 guests annually. The hotel even has its own blend – the Empress Blend Tea, of course!

Left: The entrance to the infamous Pike Place Market. Above: Chef Gavin of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel collects honey from his rooftop apiary. 34 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

VANCOUVER Hop aboard the Helijet (helijet.com) for a 30-minute flight from Victoria over Washington State’s San Juan Islands and find yourself in thriving downtown Vancouver. This vibrant, welcoming city is quickly becoming a foodie heaven, with new restaurants seemingly opening monthly. Hot spots to try include: Secret Location (secretlocation.ca) and Blacktail (blacktail.ca) in the hip and trendy Gastown neighborhood. Tag along on a Vancouver Food Tour (vancouverfoodtour.com) to get the insight on the city’s latest and greatest dining spots.

On the northwest edge of downtown, Stanley Park is a terrific place to spend a morning, an afternoon, or an entire day. More than 40 miles of forest trails throughout the park are ready to bike, hike, or walk, or simply take a bottle of local British Columbia wine and find a quiet spot within the park overlooking the Vancouver skyline. In whichever of these jewels you find yourself in the Pacific Northwest, you’re sure to write your own stories to reread time and again.

My Fair(mont) Ladies The Fairmont Olympic Hotel is ideally located in downtown Seattle, within easy walking distance of many major attractions, or the hotel’s Cadillac will take you. The Olympic Suite and Cascade Suite (both 3,000 square feet) begin at $3,599 per night. fairmont.com/seattle Try the Empress 1908 in the Bengal Lounge at the Fairmont Empress: Empress Blend Tea infused with vodka, fresh lemon juice, and lightly sweetened and frothy egg whites. Vice Regal Suite (1,450 square feet; panoramic views of Victoria’s Inner Harbor) starts at $1,199 CDN per night. fairmont.com/empress-victoria After a day exploring Vancouver, unwind with a luxurious treatment at Willow Stream Spa within the Fairmont Pacific Rim, taking some extra time to enjoy the skyline views from the spa’s fifth-floor lounge deck. When it comes to staying the night, retreat to your suite at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. Presidential Suite (2,230 square feet) and Chairman’s Suite (2,250 square feet) at the Fairmont Pacific Rim begin at $15,000 CDN per night. Lieutenant Governor Suite (1,250 square feet; 50 Shades of Grey shot within) at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver starts at $1,899 CDN per night. fairmont.com/pacific-rim-vancouver, fairmont.com/hotel-vancouver Top: The Fairmont Empress in Victoria reminescent of old-world England. DISCOVER BLACK DIAMOND T

he Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch can best be described as breathtaking. The 13th through 17th holes are carved over and around the canyon walls of two abandoned limestone quarries. Writer Dan Jenkins has referred to this stretch as “the best five consecutive holes of golf anywhere in the world.” Designed by architect Tom Fazio, along with the Ranch and Highlands, which round out the 45 holes at Black Diamond, the Quarry Course opened in 1987 and has garnered high praise from Golf Digest, Links Magazine, and Golfweek. While the Quarry Course is one of America’s favorites, the Ranch may very well be the members’ favorite. The Ranch's 16th, 17th and 18th holes “represent the three best finishing holes I've ever designed,” according to Fazio. The Highlands is no slouch either, and may be the most difficult course at Black Diamond. It can be played in tandem with the front nine of the Ranch or Quarry, offering members two more 18-hole combinations. Off the golf course, Black Diamond keeps a busy social calendar for its members. The clubhouse is the main social hub in the community, featuring a restaurant that was renovated three years ago and boasts a new bar, seating, and décor. The two fireplaces, converted to gas during the renovation, provide a warm welcome on cool winter mornings. In addition to its regular lunch and dinner services, the club hosts weekly mahjong and bridge games, poker night, as well as monthly events such as trivia buffet, wine dinner, and the ever popular turkey buffet. The club pool, heated to 84 degrees in the winter, serves as a great setting for a pool party or relaxing afternoon respite. With 45 championship holes, a four-hole par 3 course, practice facilities, fitness center, tennis courts, and pool, there is never a dull moment at Black Diamond! Located in the heart of Citrus County, the community at Black Diamond is a sanctuary for those looking for a special community unlike anything else in Florida. The rolling hills and towering pines provide the perfect backdrop for a morning round or an evening walk, and home sites feature large lots with generous setbacks. Escalante-Black Diamond Realty recently completed construction on their latest model home, the award-winning Burnham. The Burnham is available for new construction on select home sites with golf course views starting at $399,900. Resale homes are also available from the mid-$100’s to over $1 million. Black Diamond is truly the best of both worlds – an escape, worlds apart from the urban jungles of America, but close enough to all the major attractions, entertainment and niceties of Ocala, Tampa, Orlando and St. Petersburg. Blessed with sand hills of up to 150 feet, an abundance of live oaks, sub-tropical vegetation, and a sunny temperate climate, Citrus County’s Nature Coast is an ideal area for year-round golf and a wonderful setting for an active, outdoor lifestyle. It’s a slice of Florida that few have found, and none have expected. Unlike the rest of Florida, Citrus County’s Gulf Coast isn’t lined with condominiums and resorts. The nearby cities of Crystal River and Homosassa offer countless fishing opportunities, including world-class sport-fishing around the mouths of the many river inlets and the Gulf of Mexico. Kayaking and canoeing are popular pastimes on Citrus County’s seven spring-fed rivers, while snorkeling and scuba-diving with friendly manatees in the Crystal and Homosassa Rivers are also great fun. In 2013, a new membership plan was introduced to Black Diamond and offers categories for Social, Young Executive, and Full Golf Members, with a National Membership available for non-resident members. To experience the lifestyle at Black Diamond Ranch, Stay & Play packages are available and include overnight accommodations and two rounds of golf. Contact their Membership Director, Bill Hardin, for more details on membership or to schedule a Stay & Play visit; (352) 234-8855, or bhardin@blackdiamondranch.com. 38 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

When Edward Kaloust became a grandfather, he began researching the best weight loss methods. “Like many of us, I had a harder time keeping the weight off,” he explained. Together with Jim Edlund and Carol Balkcom, the three partnered with physicians and dieticians to create a program through extensive research and development. The result? The first Medi-Weightloss® clinic opened in Tampa 10 years ago, and the company’s been growing strong ever since; today there are 85 clinics in 24 states throughout the United States, and another 15 scheduled to open within the next six months. “I believe our medical weight loss program is best in the country,” said Edward Kaloust, Medi-Weightloss founder and CEO. “Each patient meets with a medical provider for an in-depth medical history and medical tests (e.g. EKG, blood test, urinalysis) before receiving a plan that’s customized based on their health, medical history, goals, and food and exercise preferences.” “All of our plans include a detailed nutrition plan, exercise recommendations, lifestyle education, and weekly one-on-one support and education in the office,” he continued. “This weekly appointment is key to success—it promotes accountability and allows our providers to monitor the patient and address concerns right away.” Accountability is a big part of Medi-Weightloss’ success rates: patients have lost a combined 3 million pounds in 10 years. And it’s that success and patients’ referrals that helps Medi-Weightloss continue its growth—more than 60 percent of new patients come from current patients’ referrals. Two local success stories come from Erin B., who lost 120

FINISHING TOUCHES

48 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

By Janan Talafer

The right combination of fabrics, textures, colors, art and accessories can give your home a beautiful finished look. Here are a few suggestions from Tampa Bay experts that will set your home apart from the neighbors.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE STORAGE UNIT

3

Luxury entertainment centers and closets with spectacular lighting, unique drawer handles and attractive wood or Italian melamine finishes are very popular right now and often rival kitchens in the investment people are willing to spend, says Wayne Smith of Southern Closet Systems.

ACCESSORIZE Similar to adding the right jewelry and shoes to complement an outfit, accessories can really bring a room together, say Cara Mayes and Jen Kravchuk of Decker Ross Interiors. A room without accessories, is merely a space with furniture, say the two designers. But it’s equally important to remember that less is more. Balance

Lighting is especially trendy, in part thanks to LED lights, which offers illumination without safety concerns related to the heat generated by traditional light bulbs. In demand are lighted rods, vertical lighting strips, mood lighting and even special cabinet lighting to showcase collectibles.

is the key to success. “Most people over-accessorize,” says Mayes. “A couple of cool, interesting pieces are ideal.” Think driftwood or shell décor for a coastal décor. Add a single floral arrangement on a side table or decorative trim and beadwork to the pillows. Even window treatments can be the final touch that is needed to complete the room.

CREATIVE FLAIR Rob Bowen and his team at Rob Bowen Design specialize in contemporary, sophisticated and minimalistic interiors. But to spice things up, they like to add the unexpected—something that sparks an emotion. It could be visual like artwork, or a unique wall covering in stone, leather, silk or vinyl. Textured pillows add a tactile touch to a simple sofa. Lighting can be used to create shadows, which can make furniture and accessories pop.

“I also love to use flowers, especially orchids,” says Bowen. “We don’t think of it as decorating; we’re creating a canvas that people are interacting with. We select pieces that are curated specifically for the room and that make a statement.”

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS The design team at Hollingsworth Showroom understands that sometimes it’s the smallest details that can mean the most, especially for a bathroom. For example, Nicole Howard points out that towels with beautiful texture and color, or bath mats that compliment your tile, can be the finishing touch that brings a bathroom to life. She also suggests that something as small as a bath tray can “make the world of a difference when having perfumes, tooth brushes, or other toiletries out in the open. They’re also a great way to keep your bathroom counters organized and stylish.”

LIVING ART WALLS If you really want to think outside the box, consider a living wall of plants. “A living wall can serve as a unique centerpiece, almost like an art accessory,” say the experts at Argentine Landscaping. The company has a reputation for creating beautiful custom projects like one they completed recently for a client. The living wall was positioned just outside the living room on the second level balcony and just before the steps going down to the pool deck. “It’s the perfect focal point for when you’re transitioning between the indoor and outdoor space,” says Joe Argentine. “It makes an immediate impact and also serves as a nice small gathering area.”

HOME ELEVATORS Unless your home is one-story, having a home elevator is almost an expectation these days, says John Scranton of Scranton Elevator. It’s both a major selling point and a matter of convenience. “Even if a home elevator is not on your immediate priority list, if you are building or renovating, it’s a good idea to plan for one as it is much more costly and complicated to retrofit than to design it into the plan upfront,” says Scranton.

BACKYARD PROTECTION When bugs, sun and torrential rain threaten to make a big beautiful backyard challenging to enjoy, you can turn to A-Niks Outdoor Comfort Solutions. A-Niks offers retractable awnings and screens, as well as retractable louvered roof pergolas. “Pool cages can block a gorgeous view and some newer homeowner associations are frowning on them for aesthetic reasons,” says Al Erturk. “Our retractables offer protection when you need it, but provide an open expansive view the rest of the time. The pergolas can be tilted to provide shade depending on where the sun is or closed all the way to offer rain protection. They’re high-end products so they’re a good complement to the property.” Like many things in life, it’s the finishing touches that can make all the difference in creating a home that suits your own unique sense of comfort and style.

WHAT’S TRENDING Get the latest in high-end kitchen and bathroom designs.

56 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

By Melinda Tam Orlando

A home’s style is a reflection of its owner, so if your kitchen and bath doesn’t speak to your favorite design, it might be time to consider a fresh-face to those spaces. We’ve talked to some of the Bay area’s most in-the-know kitchen and bath experts to give you four aspirational ideas for your next project. From natural stone and masculine influence to bold color choices and jewelry-inspired lighting, there are new trends for simplistic or the over-the-top homeowners. TREND #1: BRING ON THE COLOR

Homeowners willing to go bold or go home can start looking at colors to get them a kitchen or bath that stands out from the neighbors’ spaces. There is a growing trend to add color through kitchen appliances. Color helps to create a unique and personalized style for your kitchen, not always offered by the mainstream appliance manufacturers. The color options have commonly been limited to blue, red, black, green and whites. Appliance Gallery’s Lynn Kislin describes this nearly limitless option saying, “A few manufacturers have had color options for years such as Viking, Blue Star, Capital and ILVE. Now using the international RAL color chart, there are over a hundred options offered at an additional charge.” Some designers and homeowners are also using cabinet panels to conceal dishwashers and refrigerators, allowing the color of the range to be the focal point of the kitchen. Appliance Gallery, Inc., 13055 Starkey Road, Largo. 727-530-5150 or www.appliance-gallery.com

TREND #2: ADD JEWELRY Lighting is often referred to as the jewelry of the home. New lighting fixtures, like jewelry, not only resemble necklaces, earrings and bracelets, but include the delicate draping of glistening stones for a brilliant display. Find a few pieces that add a bit of drama and sparkle to your space without going overboard — think less is more. Marc Hammar of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery says, “Gold, nickels and platinums are coming back. It’s really like a piece of jewelry. These pieces are meant to be seen and noticed, and they create a focal point in the room.” This trend can also be incorporated into another trend on the rise: pendaliers, known as chandeliers encased in an oversized pendant. This type of feature works well over a kitchen island and could be the perfect place for a little bling. Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery, 302 N. Willow Avenue, Tampa. 813-251-1690 or www.ferguson.com/showrooms

TREND #3: MAKE A GALLERY The kitchen is a place where friends and family come gather to cook, eat and socialize together, and much of that time is spent around the kitchen sink. More and more homeowners are now giving that place some extra special attention with galley sinks and workstations. Kelly Thompson from Olde World Cabinetry, Plumbing & Hardware elaborates, “We spend most of our time at the kitchen sink, so why not make it the ideal workstation? The galley workstation is equipped with all the gadgets you need such as cutting boards, culinary kit, deluxe bowls and tier drain racks, just to name a few. The galley sink connects families and friends to the meal-planning.” Olde World Cabinetry, Plumbing & Hardware, 3751 62nd Avenue N., Pinellas Park. 727-530-9779 or oldeworldcabinetry.com

TREND #4: MAN UP

Marc Hammar of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery explains, “We are seeing the use of a lot of mixed media like rope, metal, wood and iron in these spaces. They come together with heavier lines in faucets, for example. That almost middle-ages heavy iron work is coming back as well.” Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery, 302 N. Willow Avenue, Tampa. 813-251-1690 or www.ferguson.com/showrooms

Even men have a place when it comes to the latest in kitchen and bath inspiration. New trends are giving nods to our manly counterparts, with design elements that bring in more masculine touches. Products with a masculine influence of rigid materials and pronounced lines are on the rise, and these pieces can add a bold statement, especially in the bathroom. The masculine influence adds a utilitarian simplicity to faucets and lighting fixtures.

ILLUMINATE YOUR HOME LUXURIOUSLY T

Most people think of layering as an interior design concept that involves different textures, colors and fabrics. But it’s also an effective tool for lighting that can help create depth, visual interest and balance, says Marc Hammar of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery. Proper layering starts with ambient lighting, which illuminates the room evenly and safely. The second layer is task lighting and should be chosen based on the main activity of the room. Accent lighting adds the finishing touch, helping provide impact, drama and possibly showcasing artwork, a fireplace or other special feature in the room. Here are a few of the latest lighting designs to consider for your next home project.

hanks to an explosion in spectacular, creative lighting design, selecting a pendant, wall sconce or chandelier for your home has never been more fun. The choices today are amazingly diverse, from sophisticated and contemporary to styles evoking old Hollywood glamour. Before making your selection, Jennifer Nailos of Olde World Cabinetry recommends considering how you intend to use the light. Do you need strong lighting free of shadows for tasks like reading or food preparation? Pendant lights over an island kitchen are a popular way to combine both decorative and functional needs. Lighting can also set the mood. For example, says, Nailos, adding a chandelier over the tub can add a touch of elegance to a bathroom, helping create a spa-like retreat.

CASWELL www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Olde World Cabinetry recommends Hudson Valley Lighting’s Caswell. The crafted opal glass orb takes a retro-1960s approach to the use of acrylic with the addition of modern LED technology. A gleaming ring of polished acrylic encircles the light.

Another Hudson Valley product recommended by Olde World Cabinetry, the Coolidge offers a modern twist to a late 18th century design. The light’s distinctive shape evokes a beehive and uses seeded blown glass for beautiful look.

A HOME OFFICE

Design Yours to Suit Your Needs

Move over kitchens. Today’s discriminating homeowners want a home office filled with the same level of style, comfort and good design as a fabulous high-end kitchen. “Home offices are no longer a luxury, they’re a necessity for most families these days” says Rick Green of Ethan Allen.

WHAT’S THE REASON FOR THIS TREND? A lot of it is our busy lifestyle. More people are completing unfinished business in the evening or on weekends. But even if you’re just browsing the Internet or shopping online, it’s still nice to have a designated office where you can close the door and work in peace. Before you get started creating the perfect space, Green offers a few suggestions. Invest in good quality furniture that will last a lifetime and stand up to the rigors of daily use. And, be sure to measure first, just in case that beautiful desk, side table or bookshelf won’t fit through the doorway, especially if you are converting an extra bedroom into an office.

A BEAUTIFUL CUSTOM LOOK David Calvin of David Calvin Furniture Studio creates hand-crafted custom furniture. He finds that designing a desk to fit a home office is one of the most personal pieces he undertakes for clients. “The home office is a place where people spend so much time and energy so each individual’s habits and organizational style always play into the design I create for them,” says Calvin. “Some prefer simplicity while others like a more detailed, complex design, but with a custom design clients can create a space that looks and functions exactly the 66 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

way they want, no compromises.” Rob Bowen of Rob Bowen Design Group has a reputation for designing creative, out-of-the-ordinary projects. A recent home office project that he and his team put together for a husband and wife was no exception. “The wife had a clear vision of what she was looking for,” says Bowen. “For the husband, who is a trader, she wanted something bold and dynamic, but for her office, she wanted the opposite – something calm and serene.” The final project reflected this vision. His office incorporates striking red and black lacquer millwork, a leopard print carpet, a Lucite desk and a gorgeous starburst chandelier. Hers is a more classic look with a soothing color scheme and clear views of the downtown skyline. Home Resource Contemporary Furniture is also noted for its contemporary designs that call for clean, sophisticated lines and European-inspired furniture. To achieve that style in a home office, manager Eric Cross recommends the executive desk in the JOBS collection, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni for the Italian firm Poltrona Frau. “It’s a beautiful, functional piece of furniture,” says Cross. “The front of the drawer cabinet is upholstered with Pelle Frau leather.” Whether your style is modern or traditional, discriminating homeowners are no longer content to shuffle the papers, check their email or conduct business at the kitchen counter. “It used to be that people wanted a sewing room or craft room; now everyone wants a home office,” says Green.

MADE TO LAST

The Melting Pot celebrates 40 years of success. When Melting Pot President Mike Lester heard that consumers had named his restaurant establishment the “#1 Casual Dining Restaurant in the U.S.” in 2015 via Restaurant News, he was beyond thrilled. “It’s such a huge honor,” Lester gushes. “That tells me that not only are we turning 40 years old, but we are on the top of our game. The great service, the great stories and great franchises made tens of thousands of consumers vote us as their favorite restaurant. It tells us what we are doing inside our restaurants is resonating with our guests.” To celebrate those 40 years of service, The Melting Pot will roll out some exciting new treats, beginning in late September, including a cheese fondue, consisting of 40 award-winning cheeses all in one delicious pot. An anniversary surf-and-turf dinner, a special ruby salad with goat cheese and a limited-edition molten-lava chocolate fondue will all grace the menu to commemorate this exciting time. In addition, patrons can “sip through the decades” with modern twists on some of the most popular classic cocktails like fuzzy navels, grasshoppers and mojitos. And the new features just keep rolling out. The Melting Pot is experimenting with another new concept in its St. Petersburg location, with additional markets planned in the future. Coined “FonDONE™,” this concept leaves the entrée cooking up to the skilled chefs in the kitchen instead of at the table. While the cheese fondue, salad and dessert fondue remain the same, guests choose from a selection of small plates to be cooked in the kitchen and served with hot dipping sauces. “I love this concept because we’ve taken our traditional fondue method of dining and complemented it in a way that gives guests more options on how they want to dine with us,” Lester says. Lester, who’s been with The Melting Pot since 2006, is dedicated to ensuring the customer experience in each and every Melting Pot is an emotional one. “The consumers emotionally connect with us,” Lester says. “Every week in our staff meetings we read these beautiful stories submitted 88 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

from real customers, and there’s such an emotional connection there. They come to us to celebrate all the big and little moments of their lives, and when we read those stories, it recharges our batteries and reminds us the reason we do what we do.” In fact, those stories go up for an annual award: the “POW! Award.” One winner was a story from a San Antonio location. A couple made a reservation, mentioning it was their anniversary and a death in the family forced them to cancel a special trip to Hawaii. The franchise owner heard that story and said, “If they can’t be in Hawaii, we will bring Hawaii to them.” Hawaiian decorations, leis and specialty drinks greeted the patrons, lifting their spirits during an emotional time. “It’s those simple gestures that say we care,” Lester notes. “It’s what we call ‘genuine hospitality’ and it makes me so proud of our brand.” The Melting Pot has several Tampa Bay locations.Visit www.meltingpot.com to find one close to you.

CULINARY MASTERS

By Melinda Tam Orlando

THE SECRETS OUT Castile Restaurant’s Executive Chef Alex Rodriguez Castile Restaurant at The Hotel Zamora 3701 Gulf Boulevard | St. Pete Beach 727-456-8860 | castilerestaurant.com

Nestled inside St. Pete Beach’s The Hotel Zamora sits one of Tampa Bay’s best kept secrets: Executive Chef Alex Rodriguez and the sexy and innovative cuisine he serves at Castile Restaurant. “I like to start with amazing, fresh ingredients and layer them to create bold, flavorful dishes,” Rodriguez explains. New to the Tampa Bay area, Rodriquez brings an extensive culinary background to Castile. He’s worked with well-known celebrity chefs like Geoffrey Zakarian, Bobby Flay, Jose Andres and Douglas Rodriguez. Most recently, he was at Constitution Café at the Federal Courthouse in Miami. Prior to that, he was at Pondicheri and 44 Restaurant in New York City, The Savannah and The Spa at Grand Lake in Connecticut, and Ohio’s Columbus Museum of Art. He also previously owned Luce Enoteca in Ohio with his wife, but Rodriguez is clearly enjoying his new home here in St. Pete at Castile. “I have been at Castile a little over two months now,” Rodriguez says. “Castile gives me an amazing opportunity to showcase my love for seafood and international cuisine. Castile has Spanish influence and Spain is currently the hottest trending scene in the culinary world. Castile gives me the perfect canvas to create fresh, innovative cuisine that I am passionate about.” The restaurant merges the atmosphere of a stylish sidewalk cafe with the sunny sensibility of a modern seaside grill. With seating indoors and outdoors on an expansive terrace with bay (or Intracoastal – you can’t see the ocean here) views, the restaurant serves contemporary cuisine influenced by the culinary traditions of Spain, Mexico and the Mediterranean. This breezy, elegant space serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night cocktails and an amazing weekend brunch. “We use as many local ingredients as possible,” Rodriguez boasts. “We get fresh herbs from Glory Road Gardens and I like to bring in items from the local Farmer’s Market to use in daily soups and other specials.” The Ahi Tuna Poke with citrus trinity, sesame oil, soy, tomatillo lychee salsa and crispy lotus root is a patron favorite, along with the Coconut Curry Braised Short Ribs with heirloom tomatoes and cheyote ragout. Rodriguez loves finding new inspiration and flavors to bring to guests. “I am constantly reading blogs, magazines and even use social media to keep up with culinary trends,” Rodriguez gushes. “I love to travel, experience different cultures, and explore the local cuisines— travel is so inspiring. I keep a book where I collect interesting concepts, flavor profiles and ideas that I will play with to create my own 92 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

interpretations. I’m looking forward to debuting new dishes at Castile as we head into fall and winter. Seasonality of ingredients definitely plays an important role.” Continuing to learn and explore new things in the culinary world is a passion for Rodriguez. “The food scene is always evolving. I enjoy practicing molecular gastronomy and there are chefs out there always pushing it to the next level. I’m always continuing to evolve my craft. There are so many ways to create interesting, surprising and amazing dining experiences. I would love to see Tampa Bay listed as a must-visit city for foodies like Austin, Seattle and Charleston, which are all making their way into the national food scene. I want to be a part of developing that with my fellow chefs here in Tampa Bay.” The two-time recipient of four stars during his time at BoMA and Luce Enoteca is certainly on his way to doing just that.

AUTO

By Matthew Bessete

PORSCHE 918 SPIDER

P

orsche’s 918 reigns supreme as the state of the art in supercars. Production began on September 18th 2014, and only 918 lucky owners will have the opportunity to own one. Two electric motors pair up with a 4.6-liter V8, and together they produce 887 horsepower. This power launches the hybrid from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, and from 0-100 mph in a knuckle whitening 4.9 seconds. The combination of strength and electrical power bring forth a racecar that could convince spectators it was built from nine separate machines and a bolt of lightning. The most challenging racetracks in the world become a work of ease even for an inexperienced driver as the 918 dominates every corner and hurls down the straightaways. However, understanding the supercar may have you a bit baffled. Many wondered, “How did they create a hybrid faster than a traditional supercar?”

The answer is in the motors; one electric motor fixed comfortably on the front axle producing 129 horsepower, and another electric motor on the rear axle adding an additional 156 horsepower. This gives the driver impeccable control over acceleration and perfectly balanced power to all four wheels. In plain terms, you will never lose power, even when the V8 engine is at low idle. The energy is propelled directly to the wheels, projecting the 918 gracefully around every corner. The V8 engine is another story. Porsche created a powerhouse that could sustain high-rev output like an F1 racecar without compromising street legality guidelines around the world. The high-revving engine weighs in at a low 300 pounds and is positioned low on the chassis for a precise center of gravity. The dry-sump lubrication with a separate oil tank, aluminum pumps and titanium connecting rods equal an even lighter ride, sparing no expense for performance.

Price: $929,000 | 4.6-liter V8 with 2 electric motors | Horsepower: 887 hp | 0–6-: 2.5 seconds Top Speed: 214 mph | 7-speed automatic | Torque: 944 foot-pounds 98

Medical Care To Families In Need

I

t can be hard to imagine what it might be like to have a chronic illness and not have enough money left over from your paycheck to afford medication. Or to have your child need a school physical but since you lost your job you’ve also lost your health insurance. Every month, hundreds of people in the greater Clearwater area are faced with this dilemma. These are the working poor, low-income

families that don’t make enough money to afford health insurance, but they’re also making too much money to qualify for Medicaid. Fortunately, they can turn to the Clearwater Free Clinic for a helping hand. Each year about 14,000 patient encounters are provided to the low-income uninsured patients who come to the nonprofit clinic for primary health care, medications and diagnostic testing. The clinic doesn’t receive federal funding. Instead it relies on generous donors, local hospitals and radiology groups that serve as community partners, and physicians, nurses and office personnel who volunteer their time for free at the clinic. Patients are asked to make a donation during each visit. “For every one dollar donated, we are able to give five dollars worth of free medical care,” says Meg Lokey, communications manager. “Our tag line is building healthy communities and we are proud of this accomplishment.”
