TORUK—THE FIRST FLIGHT

24 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

A New Story and a New Side of Cirque du Soleil

A

n exotic world inhabited by mesmerizing creatures and clan members distinguished by blue skin and long, lemur-like tails is the setting for the latest, and possibly most ambitious, production yet from Cirque du Soleil. TORUK—The First Flight is inspired by the blockbuster film AVATAR but goes beyond that storyline by going back in time 3,000 years before humans first set foot on Pandora. This never before told mystical tale uses live performers and multimedia production to introduce audiences to an immersive experience. The show also marks a ground-breaking collaboration several years in the making between Cirque du Soleil and AVATAR writer and director James Cameron. Both of these artistic visionaries have brought fantastic worlds to life on stage and screen. Together they are collectively pushing artistic boundaries to create an entertainment experience unlike any other. No matter whether you are a fan of the film, Cirque du Soleil or new to both, audiences will easily follow along with the help of a Na’vi guide who, helpfully, speaks English while spinning the story about two boys intent on saving the sacred Tree of Souls from destruction and, in turn, the Na’vi people who inhabit Pandora. That element alone sets this apart from most Cirque du Soleil shows which are typically open to interpretation rather than defined by narration. Another difference is the way video projectors and lighting transform the performance venue into a giant screen encompassing the entire arena. Audiences are not merely looking up or down but all around. Video projections sometimes overflow beyond the set spilling into the audience to create the illusion they are actually on Pandora. The total projection surface, excluding those areas overlapping the audience, is about 20,000 square feet or more than five times the size of a standard IMAX screen. In addition to that staggering scope, video effects sometimes synch with the performers’ movements. Beautiful bioluminescent trails follow the characters’ footsteps. The use of state-of-the-art puppetry marks another way this show dramatically differs from the 36 Cirque du Soleil productions pre-dating TORUK. These magical, and somewhat menacing, figures feel as real as any performer as they inhabit the stage and interact with the Na’vi. TORUK—The First Flight made its world debut in November 2015. Currently on tour, it will be performed in Tampa at the AMALIE Arena March 17–20.

Left: The fierce and noble Toruk is an oversized marionette with a 40-foot wingspan. Six puppeteers on the ground control the other movements of the creature. Far left top: Na'vi. The Na'vi are a highly spiritual people with a deep connection with nature. Far left middle: Austrapede puppets. The Austrapede, a cross between an ostrich, a pink flamingo and a dinosaur Far left bottom: Na'vi on the center stage island. www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com 25

WHY AN OCULOPLASTIC SPECIALIST? Jasmine Mohadjer, MD The Eye Institute of West Florida in Tampa Bay Oculoplastic Surgeon

E

yelid surgery is an intricate procedure that requires the expertise and experience of a properly trained surgeon. Doing your research for the best surgeon to perform your procedure is essential. For surgical and non-surgical conditions involving the eyelids and the face, an oculoplastic surgeon is the optimal choice. An oculoplastic surgeon is an ophthalmologist (medical eye doctor) who has completed additional fellowship training for surgery related to the structure of the eye, the tissue surrounding the eye and facial plastic surgery. At the top of the list of well qualified doctors you will find Dr. Jasmine Mohadjer, Oculoplastic Surgeon at The Eye Institute of West Florida and the Aesthetic Institute of West Florida. Dr. Mohadjer’s motto and practice pattern is, “To uphold the highest standards and safety, I never take shortcuts.” She is dedicated to providing her patients with the best natural outcomes possible. After Dr. Mohadjer completed her ophthalmology residency, she was one of only 20 selected from around the United States to receive an appointment to a two-year post residency fellowship in Oculofacial Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery. Her expertise provides a superior knowledge of the delicacies of the eyes and face and the importance of erring on the side of caution, whether she is performing an eyelid lift or injecting facial fillers to smooth away fine lines. As an oculoplastic expert, Dr. Mohadjer performs complex, precise surgical procedures, including the treatment of droopy eyelids for improved vision and appearance, periocular skin cancers, tearing problems and other eyelid abnormalities. She also performs cosmetic facial procedures such as Botox®, fillers and skin lasers, treatments that reduce or eliminate wrinkles and smooth away fine lines. Oculoplastic surgeons have a deeper understanding of the anatomy and internal processes of the eye. This specialized training enables an oculoplastic surgeon to diagnose and surgically treat medical and cosmetic concerns in the safest way possible, ensuring excellent results. “Patients trust me to rejuvenate their most expressive feature, and I take great care to ensure the best possible outcome,” Dr. Mohadjer says.

We all want to see and look our best; it is only natural. Medical and cosmetic eyelid and facial procedures are a sure way to achieve these goals. Follow Dr. Mohadjer’s philosophy and do not take shortcuts when choosing your surgeon.

STAYCATION AT HOTEL

European Elegance at the Beach

W

hen you crave a weekend getaway, don’t fly to the Bahamas. Just check into Hotel Zamora for a delightful couple of days that will make you appreciate just how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful part of Florida. Situated on the Intracoastal, Hotel Zamora is the first new hotel in more than two decades on St. Pete Beach, and it was definitely worth the wait for this stylish, intimate boutique hotel with just 50 rooms. Named after the Zamora province in Spain near the Portugal border, Hotel Zamora has a cosmopolitan European feel, Spanishstyle architecture. The interior boasts wood-beamed ceilings and a contemporary beige, orange and brown color scheme. Check in on Friday night in time to catch the sunset on the hotel’s amazing rooftop lounge with a 360-degree panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico, the Intracoastal and nearby City of St. Petersburg. The lounge has live entertainment Thursday, Friday and Saturday eveningmaking it popular with both hotel guests and locals, many of whom enjoy the opportunity to come by boat. Hotel Zamora has its own private seven-slip marina. Make a reservation for dinner at Castille, Hotel Zamora’s onsite fine dining restaurant that is earning good marks for its Latininfluenced cuisine. Try the Harissa Grilled Culotte Steak (cilantro, horseradish crema, chimmichurri and avocado frites) or the Black Grouper Cheeks (Jamon Serrano crisp, avocado kaffir crema, heirloom tomato caponata and mojito vinaigrette).

ZAMORA

The next morning, release the stress from a busy week by joining the Saturday yoga class at the attractive waterside pool and patio, which has a covered lounge area and big screen TV. January, February and March are among the best months of the year in Florida. With plenty of sunshine and the season’s cooler, more comfortable temperatures, it’s so pleasant to be out on the water. Participate in a paddleboard lesson off the hotel’s dock and master the art of balance as you look for dolphins and other marine life that are so plentiful in the Intracoastal Waterway. Dig your toes into the white sandy beach across the street at the Gulf of Mexico. Rent a beach chair and bring a book to spend a few leisurely hours just sitting, with no agenda. One of the best aspects of a staycation at Hotel Zamora is the chance to be a tourist in your own backyard. Just a short 15-minute drive away, downtown St. Petersburg beckons. Explore museums like the Dali, which features the largest collection of the artist’s work outside of his hometown in Spain. The Museum of Fine Arts showcases works of art that range from antiquity to present day, while the Chihuly Collection features a permanent collection of renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly’s distinctive work. Don’t forget to look for the many quirky urban art murals that cover buildings throughout the downtown area. Craft beer is big in St. Petersburg and a visit to downtown wouldn’t be complete with a stop at Green Bench Brewery, the city’s first microbrewery. Sample Sunshine City IPA, Maximo Milk Stout and other popular Green Bench brands crafted onsite at the 15-barrel onsite brewhouse. Hang out in the tasting room or lounge in the 6,000-square-foot beer garden out back. Stop for a late lunch or early dinner at one of the many restaurants on Beach Drive, the heart of St. Petersburg’s vibrant downtown, or graze your way through Locale Market, an upscale gourmet restaurant and market in Sundial, the new shopping, entertaining and dining destination. Cap off your weekend with a visit to the Mahaffey Theater at the Duke Energy Center for Performing Arts. Who knew a staycation in town could be so much fun?

or most of us in the Tampa Bay area, the city of Orlando means tourism and attractions. And while that may appeal to many, those looking for a luxurious escape might overlook the area. Just south of the theme parks, tucked away in ChampionsGate is the Omni Orlando, a $175 million Mediterranean-style resort just close enough, but far enough away for the ideal weekend. Over $3 million of artwork in the grand lobby welcomes guests, along with a floor-to-ceiling view of the 15- acre recreational area beyond the glass walls. Lining the main pool are eight private cabanas, which guests can “own” for the day. Ideal for relaxing, cabana amenities include luxurious chaise lounges, a flat-screen television, refrigerator, WiFi and service from the poolside bar. Situated on 1,200 acres of natural wetlands, the property also features 36 holes of Greg Norman designed golf. The International is known for 18 of the most challenging holes in the state, and boasts the highest course rating in the state of Florida. And the Callaway practice facility is perfect for working on your putting and short game as well. After a round of golf, what better way to unwind than some time at the spa? The full service Mokara Spa will spoil you with plush robes, fresh fruit and herbal teas in the waiting lounge. Guests can relax in whirlpool and saunas, or enjoy signature treatments such as the Ocean Stone Massage or an Aspara Essential Oil Wrap. At the end of the day, retire to one of the resort’s luxury suites. The Omni and Presidential Suites both feature 2,100 square feet of bliss, with balconies running the length of the suite overlooking the recreation area. For an added touch, The Villas at ChampionsGate feature upgraded services such as a personal concierge. With countless amenities at your fingertips, you can spend a luxurious weekend on property, or take the short drive to the attractions.

EARLY SATURDAY W MORNINGS AND CAFFEINATED CAMARADERIE Celebrating 10 Years of High Octane Gatherings

Awake in the early hours on the third Saturday of the month? We would love to have you and your car join us at our headquarters, duPont Publishing, Inc., 3051 Tech Drive N., St. Petersburg from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. 44 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

e always strive to keep you informed on the most exclusive events in the bay area, and if you enjoy nice cars as much as we do, our monthly Cars & Coffee show is a great way to start your weekend. The third Saturday of December marked the show’s 10th anniversary, so to help celebrate Mr. duPont decided to have a raffle. Each car that attended received a ticket upon arriving and toward the end of the event we announced the winner of a new Papago HD dash camera. Some of the first vehicles to arrive were a trio of DeTomaso Panteras, along with Lamborghinis and Ferraris from multiple decades. Participants spent quite a bit of time admiring the grand display of Italian designed cars. Local dealers like Crown Eurocars, Reeves Import Motorcars, Mercedes-Benz of Tampa, McLaren Tampa Bay and Dimmitt arrived to show off some of the hottest cars they have for sale. Pinellas County’s “finest” arrived in an all original 80’s vintage Dodge Diplomat Police Cruiser. Each month Sheriff Gualtieri brings us a different model from their historic collection, and on occasion a bomb disposal MRAP tank. Thanks to the cold morning air, the high octane cars were running at their best. We had a few 90’s era pro-street cars that run big blowers on race fuel, and their aroma was nothing short of intoxicating. Boosted cars love the cooler temperatures even more than naturally aspirated ones, and it was fun to hear the turbocharged and supercharged car owners discussing their air/fuel ratios in the coffee line. The cold weather required us to pull out all the stops on coffee production. Our friends at Melitta provided the quality beans and, as always, the proceeds of coffee sales went to local charities. Twenty gallons of premium Columbian were consumed in only two hours, breaking our previous record from several years ago. If you find yourself wide awake in the early hours of the third Saturday of the month, we would love to have you and your car join us at our headquarters. Make sure to arrive early—the event officially takes place from 7am to 9am—but spots fill up quickly. We are close to the Howard Frankland, Gandy and Bayside bridges, so it’s an easy commute – especially at that time of the morning. Thank you to all of our fans and local dealers who have been joining us for over a decade of early Saturday mornings and caffeinated camaraderie.

CREATE WHAT YOU LOVE Our homes are investments but they also speak of our private passions—they represent the life we want to live. It is where we entertain friends, indulge hobbies, and relax from a busy day. Today’s most popular home improvements not only add worth but reflect our most important values.

N

ancy Braamse, owner of Olde World Cabinetry, Plumbing & Hardware, says this movement is driving the sales of newer kitchen must-haves. The Galley sink collection is a great example. These American-made kitchen workstations close the door on the idea of an open sink. Instead, the Galley Workstation® blends entertaining and practicality through an innovative design that accommodates sliding cutting boards, fitted deluxe bowls and colanders, as well as dual tier drain racks and platforms. The one-to-three person workstations morph from food prep and clean up to party mode through just a switch of the utensils. Cooking fans are indulging in ranges that produce restaurant quality results through a plethora of high-end features. BlueStar, an Amer-

ican company based in Pennsylvania, is in high demand, says Lynn Kislin, owner of the Appliance Gallery, Inc. BlueStar offers a fully customizable line of ovens featuring an open gas burner system that produces up to 25,000 BTU’s of cooking power, provides a precise 130-degree simmer burner, and are available in more than 750 colors and finishes. Viking’s Professional 7 Series provides both Dual Fuel Ranges that combines electric and gas options while their French Door Double oven features an industry leading large capacity 4.7-cubic-foot oven available in seven finishes. Stylish as well as functional, these new designs are capturing the hearts of individuals who really want to enjoy their kitchens, either for entertaining or for preparing chef-level meals, says Kislin.

For serious entertainers, today’s hottest feature in upscale homes is a full chef’s kitchen, explains Thomas Lamb residential designer and owner of Thomas Everett Lamb Design & Development Inc. The food is cooked in the catering kitchen and served in the show kitchen. This simple distinction allows parties to migrate as they always do—straight into the kitchen—without the host worrying about messy prep remains or lingering odors. Families, too, are finding new ways for young and old to play together. John Russo’s company, Elite Home Gameroom, sells classic pinball machines as well as outfits homes with a full line of game room equipment and accessories. “Kids are now a generation removed and they marvel at the intricacy and mechanical complexity of the machines,” he says. Multicades are especially popular, as they offer a dozen arcade games in a single unit. Russo explains, “I can’t tell you how many times I get a call from a customer saying: ‘I sold my house and the new owners won’t let me keep the game room (equipment.’” Fine art purchases are creating unique statements as well. “It is an investment in the intimacy of your home,” explains Louise Del Basso,

Many people are learning to love the outdoors again and crafting spaces that are comfortable and practical. A-niks Outdoor Comfort Solutions is both a licensed full service pest control company and licensed aluminum contractor. But their specialty is in creating outdoor paradises. Owner Al Ertuck offers customers patio cooling systems engineered for Florida’s humid weather conditions. The centralized systems drop temperatures as much as 20 degrees depending on conditions and can be designed with or without mist. Clients can add extra outdoor living space with retractable awnings and roof systems as well as finish exterior kitchens and fire pits with permanent, rotatable louvered roofs. Automated insect control mist systems dramatically reduce the need for a screen in patio. “A lot of people are living outdoors now,” Ertuck says and through these sorts of investments, they are finding it easier to enjoy their backyard all year long.

Above: Argentine Landscaping Company, Inc., designs creative lighting to illuminate an outdoor space.

Pools, as well, are getting a remodel. Breaking away from the 80’s model of a traditional six-foot deep pool, customers are going modern, often crafting smaller pools with shallower depths and more water features, such as swim jets, water falls, or a sun shelf, all of which allow them to use the pool more often, says Pat O’Connell, owner of Landmark Pools. To ensure they can enjoy the view out the window each night, customers are illuminating the water by adding dimmercontrolled LED lighting as well as strip lighting along the perimeter. For many homeowners outdoor lighting is one of the hottest requests right now, says Joe Argentine, owner of Argentine Landscaping 62 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Company, Inc. Accent lighting for specific specimens magnifies a beautiful entryway while architectural down lights direct traffic and helps individuals easily mingle during gatherings. Mood lighting dotted throughout the property provides a calming ambiance for homeowners who frequently only visit their back yards in the wee hours after a long day at work. Throughout Tampa Bay, families are starting to recognize that indulging their own passions can turn into a value for someone else. All it takes is the opportunity to invest in what you love.

raveling back to the Prohibition Era can be as simple as making a dinner reservation, thanks to Ciro’s Speakeasy and Supper Club in beautiful South Tampa. This hidden gem serves an elite list of handcrafted cocktails true to the prohibition era. The staff’s talented bartenders and mixologists create tantalizing creations that will intrigue both guests’ palates and senses. Located inside the historic Bayshore Royal Building on the corner of Howard Avenue and Bayshore Boulevard, Ciro’s is a true escape from Tampa’s modern edge. The back-in-time experience starts from the first phone call to reserve your spot on the guest list. On that call, patrons receive a unique password, one they’ll whisper at the restaurant’s front door in order to gain access. From there, low lights, candles and soft jazz music create the speakeasy ambiance upon arrival. Gather for happy hour or late night cocktails in the front lounge or back library, or enjoy a full evening of drinks and dining seated in a private booth or right at the bar, where you can watch the staff bring the handcrafted cocktail experience to life. “The ambiance, the level of service and the knowledge and skill of the bartenders set us apart,” explains Robby Wages, General Manager and Beverage Director. “Ciro’s is off the beaten path and it transforms you to another time and place upon entering.” Ciro’s cocktail menu has something for everyone. The classic Old Fashioned is made with Old Forester 86 proof bourbon, demerara sugar, angostura and orange bitters, while the Gin Daisy has a more unusual mixture of Bombay Dry gin, house-made grenadine, egg whites, Peychaud’s Bitters, lemon and seltzer. Another favorite is the Intro to Vermouth with Bianco Vermouth, Dry Vermouth, raspberry, 80 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

lemon, sugar and dry champagne. The deliciousness doesn’t end with the drinks as Executive Chef Alyna Baker serves up a delicious menu to pair with the perfect cocktail. Savory entrees on the menu include Seared Lamb, Charred Octopus, Duck Breast, Roasted Bone Marrow and Chicken & Waffles. Other favorites include Black Truffle Popcorn, Duck Fat Fries and Oyster Shooters. Reception to the unique concept has been astonishing as guests flock to the location each and every night. Ciro’s was named in the Top 10 Romantic Restaurants in Tampa Bay by USA TODAY Best 10 in 2015, awarded with the Open Table Diner’s Choice in 2015 and voted Best Cocktail Bar in Tampa By Yelp in 2013, 2014 and 2015. “Patrons love the way Ciro’s makes them feel when they are there,” Wages boasts. “It’s a unique experience that guests rave about and keep returning for special occasions.” Looking to host a private event? Just past the bookcase is the restaurant’s private lounge, perfect for birthdays, private parties, teambuilding events or cocktail receptions. This intimate space lets you and your guests enjoy all the deliciousness with the privacy you crave. Ciro’s also hosts Spirit Dinners every few months, and February’s will feature Woodford Reserve, serving four dishes that will be paired with four cocktails. The restaurant is open Monday–Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., Thursday–Saturday from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Reservations are highly recommended. Dress is business casual.

ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN

T

he 2016 model year heralds the launch of something new and greatly anticipated: Dawn is arriving, thanks to RollsRoyce. At first glance you might think this is simply a Wraith sans the roof, but you would be mistaken. The factory claims that only 30 percent of Dawn’s components are shared with Wraith, and that this new convertible is that state of the art in open air motoring. From the rear hinged doors to the deck lid and trunk, the movement of each panel is done electronically and silently, with a level of grace not found from any other manufacturer. With one touch, the roof quietly begins its delicate disappearing act until it is stowed under the classic teakwood deck. Speaking of the fancy woodwork, English craftspeople spend countless hours to achieve the proper bookmatched grain. Acres of hand sewn leather compliment the polished aluminum controls ensure that every surface is worthy enough to chauffeur the Spirit of Ecstasy. Nestled just behind the famous flying lady is the latest iteration of their big twelve cylinder. This twin-turbo powerplant has direct injection to deliver 563 horsepower and 575 footpounds of torque. Thanks to that impressive level of power, 60 mph arrives in less than 5 seconds. You might be expecting a less than stellar fuel economy rating, but Rolls-Royce say that Dawn is capable of 19.9 mpg. No details have been overlooked; even the soft top has French seams for a smooth exterior. The name foretells the beginning of a new era at Rolls-Royce; and if Dawn is the measure of a modern luxury convertible, we are excited for what’s coming next.

Price: TBD | 6.6-liter twin turbo V12 | Horsepower: 563 hp | 0–60: 4.9 seconds Top Speed: 155 mph | 8-speed automatic | Torque: 575 foot-pounds 88 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Cross Out Cancer Cross Country Star Raises Funds for Children With Cancer & Their Families

W

hen Elizabeth Dolan was a camp counselor, she learned first-hand how challenging, both financially

and emotionally, it can be for parents whose children have cancer. She vowed to make a difference and she has. A junior at Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa, where she is captain of the crosscountry team, Elizabeth approached the crosscountry teams at 12 area high schools with the idea of putting on a combined community-wide fundraising event. With a governing board of 25 students from the different schools, Elizabeth launched Cross Out Cancer, a unique nonprofit organization providing support to pediatric oncology patients and their families at All Children’s Hospital. In partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning, PwC, Mission Critical Solutions, EATS! American Grill restaurant, and many other corporate sponsors, Cross Out Cancer held its first annual dinner and 5K race last November. Some 425 runners participated and the students raised more than $42,000, far surpassing the original goal of $20,000. “My vision was to unite the area high school cross country teams and give all of us an opportunity to be involved in a worthy cause,” said Elizabeth. “Everyone has been so generous in coming forward to support us and we are very grateful.” In addition to the Academy of Holy Names, high schools participating in Cross Out Cancer include: Alonso, Berkeley, Calvary Christian, Clearwater Central Catholic, Chamberlain, H.B. Plant, Jesuit, Robinson, Sickles, Tampa Preparatory and Wiregrass Ranch.
