Iedere dag spreekt uw gids in de wondere designwereld iemand uit de boezem van de organisatie. Over must-see en nice-to-see. Over mooi en nuttig. En over goed en beter. Vandaag spreken we voor de verandering met Margriet Vollenberg en Margo Konings van Organisation in Design. Niet alleen verantwoordelijk voor de nieuwe inrichting van het Klokgebouw, maar ook de reden dat DDW dit jaar voor het eerst buitenlandse exposanten toelaat. ’s Ochtends aan de redactietafel praten Margo en Margriet ons bij over hun persoonlijke hoogtepunten en avonturen. Enthousiast en meer dan tevreden, tot nog toe. Het gaat vooral over hun eigen Klokgebouw, maar ook over de vermakelijke bonte kermis op het Ketelhuisplein – die ze op hun socialemediakanalen al vergelijken met hun succesnummer Ventura Lambrate in Milaan.

Gevraagd naar hun tips gaan de dames echt op hun praatstoel zitten. De ene must-see buitelt over de andere heen, juweeltjes en pareltjes vliegen over tafel. Nog nasuffend van gisteravond vangen wij Autre Choix, Austrian Design en Cesare Griffa op. Allemaal te zien en te beleven in – u raadt het al – het Klokgebouw. De lofzang klonk even aanstekelijk als aannemelijk, maar we hielden de journalistieke plicht in het achterhoofd. Dus stuurden we onze sterreporter en hoffotograaf erop af om zelf te oordelen. DE KLOK ROND
We beginnen, logica boven alles, in hal 2. Daar blijven we gelijk hangen aan een fietsketting. Sterker: bossen fietskettingen, verwerkt tot prachtige lampen. Een ontwerp van Lolo Palazzo. Goed idee.
Van een heel andere orde is PROOFFLab At Home van Studio Makkink & Bey. Een huis in een huis. Een atelier in een atelier. Een ruimte in een ruimte. Opvallend detail is ongetwijfeld de schoorsteen.
Recht daartegenover staat Lore Langendries. Een Belgische sieradenontwerpster die de grens opzoekt tussen machinale reproductie en handwerk. Daarvoor gebruikt ze lasertechnieken en dierenhuiden. Of, zoals ze zelf zegt: ‘Ik onderzoek de omgang met techniek vanuit een ambachtelijke manier van denken.’ En daar hebben we weinig aan toe te voegen.
Atelier Rick Tegelaar verrast uw reporter met de Constructed Surface Table. Een tafel dus. En mooi ook. Maar het bijzondere is dat hij werd gemaakt van afval verwerkt tot multiplex. Door het visgraatmotief is het tafeloppervlak ijzersterk. Handig als u van mooi houdt én kinderen hebt. Bijvoorbeeld.

Over kinderen en tafels gesproken. Studio Brekel & Strekel houdt wel van een goede ruzie aan tafel. Van een beetje risico in het leven. Wat dagelijkse, huishoudelijke pijntjes. ‘Omdat alle risico en elke tegenslag steeds meer uit ons leven geweerd wordt,’ zei Brekel. Of Strekel. Vandaar een etagère met draaimechanisme om de taartpunten te lanceren. Wiebelkaarsen en meer gevaarlijk moois. Onze hoffotograaf bleef stilstaan bij het meditatieve speelgoed voor volwassenen van Studio Ingrid Hulskamp. Fotograaf en ontwerper waren enthousiast, uw reporter vertwijfeld en onzeker. ‘Ja, heel lekker,’ zei Lisa, en de verslaggever wil het daar graag bij laten. Wellicht een ding van Venus en Mars. Ga kijken en u mag het zeggen.
Het leiderschap beviel onze fotograaf, want na het speelgoed ging ze in één beweging door naar de Barbecue Pot van Studio Casper Tolhuizen. Geschikt voor een winterse indoor BBQ stoofpot en geleverd met recept. Tevens fotogeniek, hadden we de indruk, maar dat mag u zelf beoordelen. Het duizelde ons en genoemde fotograaf liet ons landen bij Tonone. Ingenieus bewegende lampen die wij helaas in dit medium niet bewegend kunnen laten zien. Kortom, bezoek verplicht. Toen wij bekomen waren stelden we vast dat het mooi, ingenieus en verrekte leuk was. Opvallende opdraaisleutel bijgeleverd. De moeite waard. Alleen al vanwege de presentatie.

We sluiten af met een persoonlijke favoriet: Jeroen van Loon met Kill your Darlings. Een kunstwerk dat vragen oproept aangaande privacy. Een verzameling harten (categorie: denk aan mij) waarin afwisselend de mooiste portretten van de mooiste pubermeisjes staan, die met regelmaat plaatsmaken voor de gruwelijkste tweets van diezelfde dames in wording. Schokkend. Plaatsvervangende schaamte. Angst voor eigen nazaten. In wisselende volgorde. Doen! Excuus aan iedereen die we niet hebben gesproken en/of geschoten. Jullie zijn allemaal geweldig. De klok rond!

Een transparante vaas van drie meter hoog, opgebouwd uit duizenden ledlampjes. Natuurlijk hadden we graag vermeld hoeveel het er exact zijn, maar helaas. Gedurende het proces moet iemand de tel zijn kwijtgeraakt. 12.000 zegt het persbericht, de begeleidende mail houdt het op de helft. Hoe het ook zij: een ware Blikvanger is het en blijft het. Ontwerper Dirk Vander Kooij zelf noemt deze reus Lenses Vase en zet hem in als kroonjuweel van zijn 350 vierkante meter grote expositie. Te bezoeken in zijn nieuwe studio aan de Hallenweg op nummer 3.

Recycling2 In het begin gebruikte Vander Kooij vooral veel gerecycled materiaal van anderen. Nu hij zelf tot de gevestigde orde begint te horen, en als gevolg daarvan meer produceert, ontstaat er ook een berg eigen restafval. Weggooien is zonde, vindt ook Vander Kooij. In plaats daarvan verwerkte hij het restmateriaal in een nieuwe serie concepten en producten. Goed idee. Aldus ontstond de Left Over Table (een omsmelting van Endless, een van de hits tijdens DDW 2011), de Changing Vase (een opvallend gekleurde, niet te reproduceren vaas waarvan het perspectief verandert als je eromheen loopt) en de Chubby Coat Hanger: kleerhangers gemaakt uit het materiaal van zijn morsende robotarm. Beslist de moeite waard, alleen al om een poot te geven aan de onafscheidelijke, chocoladebruine hond.

Info and Services Ode to the City Art directors Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings (Organisation in Design) have created a special presentation in the Klokgebouw. Their Ode to the City enables visitors to experience DDW in its entirety, literally forging a connection with all other design events. As such it can be regarded as one of the main starting points of DDW. On the web DDW’s website (www.ddw.nl) and its mobile version (m.ddw.nl) are handy hubs for all info on the event and its entire program. If you can’t find it there, you won’t find it anywhere. Dutch Design World A new virtual platform for DDW by studio George&Harrison and ICT developer Delite. Watch, share and rate your own photos and films and those made by other visitors and designers via www.ddworld.nl. Press center In order to actually create the buzz Dutch design deserves, we try to be the best possible host for media and press. Hence, we have turned our headquarters into the official press center. Here we will provide journalists, bloggers, photographers and camera crews with special info kits and the latest news hot off the press. The press center is located at DDW-HQ (23) and is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00.

Areas and opening hours DDW’s program is concentrated in three areas, each with its own character. Please note that although some events take place just outside these areas, they are definitely worth a visit! Although you may assume that most events are open from 11:00 to 18:00, the opening hours vary per event. At our website, you’ll find the exact opening hours of every location. Dazzling designer collectives, cultural institutions, conceptual and innovative design, mostly under curatorship, in the welcoming environment of the Eindhoven inner city.
Area East Location 71 - 72 / General opening hours: Sectie C, Saturday and Sunday 12:00 - 21:00, Monday till Friday 16:00 - 21:00. Up-and-coming designers and dynamic collectives with a hands-on mentality in the experimental environment of the unique design enclave Sectie C on the outskirts of the city.
Getting there and around MINI Design Rides Want to be driven around in style? The MINI Design Rides take you to and from any DDW location. And the best thing is: it’s free! You’ll find the MINI Design Rides at the following four stops: Piet Hein Eek (01), Klokgebouw (11), Lichtplein (37) and Stadhuisplein (45). At all other locations, you can order MINI Design Rides by calling +31(0)40-218 00 00. MINI Design Rides run daily from 11:00 to 20:00.
Bikes and scooters Want to see everything of DDW? All event locations are within biking distance. Moreover, you’re only a real ‘Dutchie’ when you’re cycling. So go and get yourself a rental bike, scooter or other vehicle at Urban Wheelz Center (Strijp-S), Videolab (26), or on the Lichtplein behind deWitteDame (37). Please note that you need to have a valid ID and a credit card to rent any of the vehicles. You have to take the bike back to the location where you hired it.
Special public transport Together, DDW and MU provide a free shuttle bus to and from all locations on the passe-partout. These are: deWittedame (37), Stadhuisplein (45), MU (Strijp-S) (22) and Klokgebouw (11). The bus runs on all DDW event days from 12:00 noon. On Sundays, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until 18:00. On Saturday, Thursday and Friday until 21:00.

LECTURIS’ BOEKKUNST Dacht je dat ze zich in Rusland druk maken om fitties met minister Frans Timmermans of een paar verdwaalde Greenpeace-activisten? Niet dus. De twintigste eeuw, die was pas echt dramatisch voor het volk uit het grootste land ter wereld. Twee Wereldoorlogen, een revolutie die het maatschappelijk bestel omverwierp, en de invoering van een nieuw sociaal systeem dat er in de praktijk net wat minder uitzag dan het deed op papier.

Hoe diepgaand de invloed van die turbulente eeuw was op hun boekkunst, kun je vandaag in het Van Abbemuseum zien en horen tijdens een lezing door Serge Stommels en Albert Lemmens. Met talrijke voorbeelden uit de collectie die beide verzamelaars schonken aan het museum, laten ze zien wat er gebeurde met de grafiek en het design. Met een focus op illustratief werk. Raadsel: wat verbindt de boer, de designer en de bank? We geven een tip. Het zijn drie letters. Precies: DDW. Een Eindhovense designweek lang onderzoeken ontwerpers en ondernemers uit de agrarische wereld hoe design kan bijdragen aan het oplossen van vraagstukken die spelen op en rond het boerenbedrijf. Agri meets design is de overkoepelende noemer. ABN AMRO richt zich met haar diensten en jarenlange sectorkennis (zie insights.abnamro. nl) ook op de agrarische sector. Op zoek naar ondernemers met een verhaal. Natuurlijk een verhaal waar goede cijfers onder liggen, maar minstens zo belangrijk is de mens. De ondernemer en zijn visie op zijn of haar bedrijf en de toekomst. De bank wil een sparringpartner zijn, maar is tegelijkertijd financier en wil met enige overtuiging vast kunnen stellen dat het geïnvesteerde kapitaal ook terugkomt. De corebusiness van een bank, per slot van rekening. In dat opzicht noemen ze zichzelf ook wel eens risicotaxateurs. Om de agrarische ondernemers te helpen bij hun verhaal, bij het zogenaamde storytelling, worden designers en ondernemers samengebracht door gastorganisatie ZLTO. Op deze dag letterlijk gedurende een presentatie en workshop. Een workshop waar ter plekke oplossingen uit kwamen die bijzonder hoopgevend waren.

Zoals een alternatieve, duurzame verpakking voor aardappelen, geschikt voor directe presentatie in winkel of supermarkt, maar tegelijkertijd als meeneemkratje naar huis. Ondernemers tevreden. Designers tevreden. En de bank dus ook, met dit begin van een nieuwe toekomst. Future now!

PARADISE FOUND Chaos in de Steentjeskerk. Het is de schuld – of de verdienste – van Victor Sonna, curator van Paradise Reset. Een expositie over opnieuw beginnen en hergebruiken. Zijn eigen werk is er ook te zien. Een berg schroot en opnieuw in elkaar gedraaide fietsen. Plus rollators. Heel veel rollators. Onaf, ruw, verbrand, een beetje vies en op het eerste gezicht dus tamelijk chaotisch. Maar zo wil hij het juist graag. In tegenstelling tot de kreukvrij gladgestreken expo’s die hij elders in de stad ziet, wil hij juist imperfectie. Niet te moeilijk en vooral niet te mooi.
Op die criteria heeft hij de rest van de exposanten gecureerd. Ontwerpers die net als hij willen prikken en schuren. Een van hen is Harm Rensink, die een enorme berg zand naar binnen heeft gesjouwd waar je bovenop kunt zitten. Het is de bedoeling dat je dat ook doet. Rensink maakt namelijk experimentele ontspanningsinstallaties, zoals hij het zelf noemt. Sauna’s, stoombaden, en nu dus een zandberg. Leuk voor de bezoekers, leuk ook voor de maker. ‘Ik kijk wat mensen ermee doen, hoe ze erop reageren. Hoe ze die berg op komen.’
Wie de berg weer is afgedaald, kan kijken naar de modderpoel van Jules van den Langenberg, het eethoekje The Last Supper, en naar werk van Niels Hoebers, Borre Akkersdijk, Sander Wassink, Nacho Carbonell en Emiel Arts. Als Beeldenstormers hebben ze de Steentjeskerk op zijn kop gezet, en toch is een bezoek aan Paradise Reset een rustgevende, welhaast spirituele ervaring in een serene sfeer. Sonna belooft dat na deze week alles weg is en dat je er dan niets meer van zult zien. Doodzonde. Reden temeer om snel te gaan kijken. Steentjeskerk (# 30) Elke dag open van 09.00 tot 00.00 uur

UITGESPROKEN Dutch design neemt stelling. Want wie alles wel best vindt, ontwerpt en verbetert niks. Om die traditie hoog te houden, leggen we dagelijks vijf statements voor aan een kopstuk uit de branche. In de vijfde editie: Nalden, internetondernemer van de nieuwe generatie. WETRANSFER IS HET BEWIJS DAT VEEL MENSEN HEBBEN ZITTEN SLAPEN. Hahaha. Het is sowieso het bewijs dat je door middel van design (UI/UX) veel mensen technologie kunt laten omarmen. Dat andere tech-startups dat eerder niet deden binnen deze categorie laat wel zien dat niet iedereen even wakker was. TECHNOLOGIE MAAKT HET LEVEN BETER, MAAR DE MENSEN ONGELUKKIGER. Bullshit. Door middel van technologie kan men meer uit zijn leven halen. Het is aan ons balans te hierin vinden. Geluk zit in de mens zelf en technologie staat daar los van. ‘FUCK IT’ IS HET BESTE DEVIES VOOR WIE IETS WIL BEREIKEN. Soms helpt het wel om zo uit de comfort zone te stappen. Het is die DIY-attitude die vaak voor verandering zorgt. Of je daar iets mee bereikt is altijd anders en niet zeker, maar het is een begin. Het mooiste voorbeeld blijft Henry Ford. Als hij deed waar men om vroeg, reden we nog steeds met paard-en-wagen.

BLOGGERS HEBBEN MEER MACHT DAN KONING WILLEM-ALEXANDER. Hahaha, verre van. Bloggers hebben geen macht zoals Willem-Alexander dat heeft. Dat is next level shit. Bloggers hebben een publiek, wat soms groot genoeg is om een gedachtegoed of movement te veroorzaken, maar dat is nog lang geen macht. In China is het wel eens uit de hand gelopen dat een blogger een gigantisch bereik had en negatief politiek getint was, waardoor controversiële arrestaties plaatsvonden. Daar zou dan weer een Willem-Alexander bij kunnen helpen omdat hij macht heeft ;)

EEN ECONOMISCHE CRISIS IS EEN SCHOP ONDER DE KONT VOOR LUIE MENSEN. Ik vrees dat dit niet echt zo is. Luie mensen worden geprikkeld door interesse of een gedachtegoed, of voetbal. Daar staat een crisis helaas los van. Een crisis is wel weer de kans bij uitstek om te innoveren, investeren en nieuwe ideeën van de grond te krijgen. GOED ONTWERP WORDT NOOIT MAINSTREAM. Goed ontwerp mag best mainstream zijn. Denk maar eens aan je mes & vork van de Ikea. Goed ontwerp gaat verder dan een tafeltje van Piet Hein Eek. Digitaal gezien is goed ontwerp sowieso mainstream. Denk aan Google. Simpel in gebruik voor iedereen. Meer mainstream ga je het niet krijgen ;) WIE MOGEN WE MORGEN VIJF STELLINGEN VOORLEGGEN? Marcel Wanders, product- en interieurontwerper www.marcelwanders.com Internetondernemer Nalden (1984) signaleerde tien jaar lang hij trends op het gebied van tech, muziek, fashion en design op zijn blog Nalden.net. Hij kreeg landelijke bekendheid toen De Wereld Draait Door hem kroonde tot internetdeskundige. Nu ligt zijn focus op ondernemen. Naldens eerste startup WeTransfer is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een speler van wereldformaat. Het gebeurt regelmatig dat een ambitieuze reporter de redactie bezoekt om zijn of haar diensten aan te bieden. Maar dat ze all the way from India komen, dat maken we niet dagelijks mee. Inspired by the past I have seen it happening in India with the movie makers, fashion designers, industrial designers and many such creative professionals who these days are very often inspired by the past. They keep revisiting the golden and glorious vintage era of the fifties and sixties, and so does the Indian film music, which nowadays is inspired by the eighties. Modern Times Interestingly, I noticed the similar trend at the prestigious Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven currently. For instance, industrial designer Aart Van Asseldonk loves to preserve the old craftsmanship, the old fashion, and is fascinated with the idea of working with own hands, building own production. Taking a page from the Milan Design Week and most importantly from Charlie Chaplin’s 1930 classic Modern Times, he set up a temporary art gallery that has a heating stove made out of 230 kilograms of steel, lamps based on the old trouble light, and a safe storage closet that refers to the abutments of iron works back in 1686. Everything about the closet is exaggerated – the size, technology and sound as well as the time it takes to open.

Globally, most of us may be going the modern way and would want to use the newest technology to be with the times matching up with the competitive world, but at some point of time, many of us feel for our roots. The simplicity and beauty of the forgotten crafts keep coming back in the technology-based society time and again.
Vintage Photo Similarly, what attracted my attention was a project called Vintage Photo, established by another set of young designers. They had the brainwave of renting out old cameras for a day, as they feel that the analog pictures set you thinking and capture great atmosphere – unlike the digital ones that just go ‘click, click, click’. The cameras that one can rent are from the period 1929 to 1989. Utrecht Then there was the project ‘Hier is Utrecht’ by graduate students from the Art Academy of Utrecht. They have created jewellery like ear rings, neck pieces, waist bands, and rings made out of wooden pieces and papers. Colourful and multiple layers of papers with images of jewellery designs help you explore your next line of jewellery. They have also created attractive looking cabinets with multiple uses (storing books and cups) that appear to be made out of cement from a distance but are actually made out of different types of foam rubber – the material that usually doesn’t get attention. It has been shown in pure form, embraced the way it is. Old is gold, seems to be the global phenomenon.
