Voelsprieten Ontwerpers bedenken, brainstormen, vormen en ontwikkelen. Daarna wordt er geknutseld, gebouwd, geschaafd, opgebouwd en weer afgebroken. Solisten, collectieven en instituten werken aan de meest onwaarschijnlijke ideeën en geven de toekomst vorm. Niet altijd even zichtbaar, maar wel degelijk continu. Dag in, dag uit. Een keer per jaar presenteren ze al hun werk bij elkaar aan de buitenwereld. Dan zet Dutch Design Week de deuren naar de toekomst open en komt die buitenwereld naar Eindhoven in de vorm van duizenden liefhebbers en geïnteresseerden. Een groots feest met inhoud dat het experiment en de innovatie hoog in het vaandel draagt. Een stadsbreed podium ook voor vakgenoten van binnen en buiten de stad, en dit jaar voor het eerst ook van buiten de grenzen.

De belangrijkste gasten, zowel op het feest als op dat podium, zijn de ontwerpers. Zonder hen geen festival. Ook niet zonder sponsoren, bezoekers, vrijwilligers, pers en vertegenwoordigers uit het bedrijfsleven. DDW, als gastheer, ondersteunt en faciliteert waar mogelijk om iedereen een aangename en nuttige week te bezorgen. We organiseren het evenement, maar het draait niet om ons. Die houding helpt om voeling te houden met wat er leeft en gebeurt in zo’n buitengewone broedplaats als Eindhoven. Zodat we op de hoogte zijn en blijven, doorlopend nieuw talent kunnen ontdekken en presenteren. Ontwerpers geven de toekomst vorm. Hoe ze dat in het meest recente verleden deden, is vanaf nu negen dagen lang voor iedereen te zien en mee te maken. Het geeft ook een indicatie van hoe de wereld van morgen eruit zou kunnen zien. Dat beeld is optimistisch, en daarom ben ik het ook. Welkom op Dutch Design Week.

‘ALS IK VAN BETEKENIS KAN ZIJN, DAN IS HET NU.’

GEZONDE GEESTEN IN HET DESIGNHUIS Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam en de gemeente Eindhoven pakken uit met een tentoonstelling over de vormgeving van ons welzijn door de jaren heen. ‘De Gezonde Mens’ gaat in op de bijdrage die ontwerpers leveren aan alledaagse zorgvraagstukken. Er zijn de hele week extra activiteiten. De Gezonde Mens In de loop der tijd heeft de wetenschap een enorme hoeveelheid kennis vergaard over het bestrijden en voorkomen van ziekten. Niet alleen door het belang van goede voeding en een gezonde leefomgeving te benadrukken, maar ook door de ontwikkeling van hoogwaardige technologie. Ontwerpers zijn altijd nauw betrokken geweest bij het onderzoek en verdere innovatie. Tijd voor een pas op de plaats. Waar gaan we naartoe met al die nieuwe apps, 3d-toepassingen en robots? ‘De Gezonde Mens’ in het Designhuis laat het zien met een overzichtstentoonstelling. Van menselijke preparaten op sterk water tot Agatha Haines hypermoderne kunsten onderzoeksproject Transfiguration.

Urgentie Curator Sabine Wildevuur wil met ‘De Gezonde Mens’ de urgentie van onze zorgvraagstukken onder de aandacht van het publiek brengen. Daarmee sluit ze welhaast naadloos aan op de actuele transformatie van verzorgingsstaat naar participatiemaatschappij. Wildevuur: ‘In de zorg lijkt het tegenwoordig met name te gaan om kostenbeheersing. Alles moet efficiënter en goedkoper. Traditionele systemen en denkkaders veranderen. De verzorgingsstaat van de jaren zestig is niet meer houdbaar. Daarnaast is er een groeiende behoefte aan do it with others-zorg: een concept waarbinnen wordt samengewerkt aan nieuwe oplossingen.’

Vijf baby’s zijn zo gemodificeerd dat ze er in de toekomst profijt van hebben op medisch of maatschappelijk gebied. Nu zijn het nog poppen. Transfiguration van Agatha Haines gaat over de kwetsbaarheid en kneedbaarheid van de allerkleinsten. Over hoe een kinderlijf kan worden gemanipuleerd zodat het later beter functioneert. Frankensteinpraktijken, of toch niet?

De meeste kinderen vinden het ziekenhuis maar niks. Ontwerper Hikaru Imamura uit Japan, afgestudeerd aan Design Academy Eindhoven, kwam na onderzoek tot de conclusie dat spelen veel stress en ongemak wegneemt. Met haar Novel Hospital Toys wennen kinderen alvast aan CT-scans, röntgenfotografie en elektrocardiografie. Helemaal gemaakt van hout, batterijen, leds en draden.

Kunstenaar en ontwerper Susana Soares uit Portugal bestudeert afwijkende diagnosemethoden. Met Bee’s bewijst ze dankzij handgeblazen glazen hulpmiddelen dat bijen na training aan je adem kunnen ruiken of je iets onder de leden hebt. In een vroegtijdig stadium, want de geelzwarte insecten blijken te beschikken over een fabuleus reukvermogen. Het totale project omvat behalve deze glasvoorwerpen een bijenkolonie, een opleidingscentrum, een onderzoekslab en een screeningkliniek.

De interactieve rok Drapely-o-Lightment van grafisch en modeontwerpster Marina Toeters en professor Loe Feijs komt voort uit een onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden van textiel als communicatiemiddel. Het kledingstuk laat zien hoe simpel, gebruiksvriendelijk en aantrekkelijk het projecteren van informatie op textiel kan zijn. Samenwerking met Philips, by-wire.net en de afdeling Industrial Design van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven.

Piet Hein Eek is wereldberoemd, maar nauw verbonden aan Eindhoven. Met zijn imposante ontwerpfabriek op Strijp R – een enorme trekpleister voor de stad – is hij de beste representant die het evenement zich kon wensen. Dit jaar pakt de man met het blauwe jasje officieel de handschoen van ambassadeur op. Piet Hein Eek over DDW, groeistuipen en de kwaliteit van presenteren. ‘De meeste designweken zijn ontstaan rond een verkoopbeurs. Hier is dat niet zo. Het ontwerpproces heeft hier altijd centraal gestaan: laten zien hoe je van een idee tot een product komt. Dat is bijzonder, uniek en heel waardevol.’ ‘In Eindhoven is de maakindustrie nooit ver weg. De aanwezigheid van technologie én productie als creatieve kracht is de ideale grond voor het ontwikkelen van nieuwe producten en concepten.’ ‘Als ontwerper moet je een goede generalist zijn – met ideeën uiteraard. Dat betekent dat je overal iets van weet en begrijpt, en zo het proces kunt doorzien en sturen. Ook daarom is de link met verschillende branches en bedrijven zo belangrijk.’ ‘Het ontwikkelen van bijzondere presentaties samen met ontwerpers, labels en instituten staat hoog op de agenda. En wat ook nieuw is: de grenzen gaan letterlijk open dit jaar, en dat is een primeur. Vanaf nu zijn er ook internationale partijen, dankzij de artdirectors van het Klokgebouw.’

Omhoog De Nederlandse economie verkeert in zwaar weer. Praten over de problemen lost niks op, kijken naar oplossingen wel. Dat is voor mijn gevoel ook wat er spreekt uit het thema Now future: aanpakken, constructief denken en handelen. Die benadering vind ik zeer hoopgevend. Today is the Final Exam and Graduation ceremony. My first one. I just arrived. And you are leaving. It seems we meet in passing. You, fresh new Design Academy Bachelors, are moving on to other challenging situations, and I have come to this one. Most of you I haven’t even met, and now you are leaving already. It seems a pity. But this school has strong relations with many alumni, so goodbye often means: see you soon. And you aren’t leaving unnoticed. This year’s show is strong, with so many inspiring projects reflecting your personal stories, conflicts and fascinations.

When you decided on a creative career, you also decided to speak through your work. To reveal something of yourself in your work. This is one of the essential aspects of a creative career. So in seeing your projects I am getting to know you. A good design is a personal design. At this school we try to teach you to be personal in your work. I detect three stages in this process. First there is self-expression. People often need a little help in triggering it. Self-expression is a bit like running: once you start, you become more healthy. I really think that expressing yourself will improve your personal health. Then if you train harder, you will see an immense improvement, and then there comes a moment it becomes addictive. You just have to go on. That is why you learn something else at this school: self-critique. Some teachers have cheered you on in your creativity, but others will have confronted you with their evaluations. Gradually you have learned to be prepared for this criticism, and learned to balance it with your own values. That is self-criticism. You internalize a critical mindset. Having developed these contradictory forces, a few of you get slightly overwhelmed. And yet there is no time to lose, because we still have another stage to reach. It is the stage of self-initiative. I know that for many, this is the most difficult one. You have learned to be self-expressive, you have learned to be self-critical, but you have learned to do so in projects that have been handed to you by the school. In the final work you were asked to self-initiate a project. Most of you have been struggling with this over the last semester.

Seeing your projects today shows me that you have all succeeded. You speak to us through your projects. But the projects also speak for themselves. What strikes me in the presentations is the un-self – which is funny since, so far, I have been talking about the self. I see social issues, and an interest in the collective, the group, togetherness. Human interaction, the human collective is at the centre of many of your projects. I think this is fitting in these times when the balance of power is shifting. The big institutions have failed us. The welfare state is crumbling. People are taking initiatives where institutions fail. Group initiatives are what many of these new designers are looking for. The un-self in the sense of the social, the care for others, is exemplified in the projects for healthcare. ‘Stages of Connection’ by Sanne Ree Barthels focuses on dementia; a powerful attempt to reconnect those who are slipping away from their loved ones. Renee Scheepers helps patients by mapping cancer care, providing some light in the dense insecurity with which patients may find themselves overcome. Inge Kuipers’ tea set ‘Touch’ helps people who have trouble lifting and pouring – and is a design with a logic of its own. For people in Northern Uganda who have been mutilated by machetes, Luc van Hoeckel has initiated a project called ‘Single Spark’. It focuses on self-help for a group of people whose sense of self-worth has been harmed. The un-self in the sense of the collective is apparent in Conor Trawinski’s multi-dimensional platform ‘WeCollaborate’, with its loose yet structured creative jam sessions for those who need some help

in setting up projects, and for those who need a project to practise their skills. Elif Özbay has come up with a creative and funny character, the ‘Blye Turk’, to present her research into the language used by a generation whose lives are led between two cultures. What happens to the self amid all this unselfishness? The self is implicit in Willem van Doorn’s project ‘Illumination by Digestion’, which highlights and promotes effective ideas for selfsufficiency. There are projects which question the self and how it is perceived; Bart Eysink Smeets’ ‘Artificial Atmosphere Design’ explores how people use fake items to add real atmosphere. Will the plastic man’s smile add a touch of true happiness? Jan Pieter Kaptein has developed a ‘Second Self Laboratory’ with grotesque costumes to allow people to try on new social roles. A new self is researched in Nina van Bart’s project ‘The Alchemist’, too, as it offers users an opportunity to concoct their own perfect elixir. And of course the self is explicitly present, and in need of some care, in Dirk Smit’s ‘ESC: Off the Grid’, an escape with which to steer yourself away from constant connectivity, to retreat and nurture the soul. So the self and the un-self are intimately connected in these projects. Everything you have made is personal and, at the same time, transcends the personal. This is what makes this meeting at once personal and intense and the beginning of getting to know one another.

Areas and opening hours DDW’s program is concentrated in three areas, each with its own character. Please note that although some events take place just outside these areas, they are definitely worth a visit! Bikes and scooters Want to see everything of DDW? All event locations are within biking distance. Moreover, you’re only a real ‘Dutchie’ when you’re cycling. So go and get yourself a rental bike, scooter or other vehicle at Urban Wheelz Center (Strijp-S), Videolab (26), or on the Lichtplein behind deWitteDame (37). Please note that you need to have a valid ID and a credit card to rent any of the vehicles. You have to take the bike back to the location where you hired it.

Special public transport Together, DDW and MU provide a free shuttle bus to and from all locations on the passe-partout. These are: deWittedame (37), Stadhuisplein (45), MU (Strijp-S) (22) and Klokgebouw (11). The bus runs on all DDW event days from 12:00 noon. On Sundays, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until 18:00. On Saturday, Thursday and Friday until 21:00.

Aan designprijzen geen gebrek. Ook tijdens DDW worden er weer heel wat uitgereikt. De Dutch Design Awards (DDA) zijn waarschijnlijk de bekendste van het stel. Niet voor niets: de genomineerden vormen een weloverwogen selectie uit honderden inzendingen, en staan garant voor design op het hoogste niveau.

Hoe innovatief, baanbrekend, nuttig en sociaal design van eigen bodem anno nu kan zijn, zie je met eigen ogen bij de overzichtstentoonstelling van DDA. De nooit gedragen truien van Loes Veenstra in een overzicht van Christien Meindertsma bijvoorbeeld. Maar ook een 500 pagina’s tellend boek over Chanel Nº5 van Irma Boom vol onzichtbare letters. Een blauwwitte huid van 55.000 keramische tegels door Bierman Henket Architecten. En de originele japonnen van Máxima door Jan Taminiau. Dichter bij de vrouw van de koning komen de meeste stervelingen niet. Wie de felbegeerde DDA’s dit jaar in de wacht slepen, wordt zaterdag 19 oktober bekendgemaakt tijdens de feestelijke awardshow. Er zijn prijzen te verdelen in de hoofdcategorieën product, communicatie en ruimtelijk. De winnaar van de BNO Piet Zwart Prijs, oeuvreprijs van de beroepsorganisatie, is al bekend: mode- en textielontwerper Ulf Moritz. Nieuw zijn de Future Concept Awards: een prijscategorie geheel gewijd aan ontwerpen met het oog op de toekomst. In de race voor de titel zijn zes finalisten die met hun ontwerp een belangrijke bijdrage leveren aan een betere toekomst op het gebied van gezondheid, mobiliteit, veiligheid en (nieuwe) energie.

LIGHTING UP ANOTHER POSSIBILITY Wat gebeurt er als je vier ontwerpers en engineers uit Taiwan samenbrengt met Nederlandse ontwerpers en een invention kit vol lichtconcepten? Geen idee, maar het maakt enorm nieuwsgierig. Dus kom maandag kijken. Naar illustere vondsten waarin licht reageert op aanraking, beweging of geluid.

De prijsuitreikingen vinden plaats in het Klokgebouw. Wie daar bij wil zijn, heeft een officiële uitnodiging nodig. Heb je die niet? No worries. Het werk van alle finalisten is tot en met 27 oktober te zien tijdens de overzichtsexpositie in het fonkelnieuwe gebouw Gerard op Strijp-S.

Deze workshop is een eenmalige ontmoeting tussen Oost en West waar de vonken van afvliegen. De deelnemende Nederlandse ontwerpers zijn Lonneke Gordijn (Studio Drift), Michiel Geluk en Barth Vrijling (Vrijling & Geluk), Maarten Collignon (Studio WM) en Nathan Wierink en Joris Weerdesteijn (Ontwerpduo). De stand van QisDesign is de hele week te bezoeken in hal 3 van het Klokgebouw, stand 3.070.

Behalve textielontwerper was Moritz ook hoofddocent van Design Academy Eindhoven, een functie die hij combineerde met zijn eigen ontwerpbureau. Veel van zijn studenten behoren inmiddels tot de internationale ontwerptop. De kosmopoliet Moritz doet wereldwijd ideeën op en vertaalt die in collecties waarbij esthetiek en commercie steeds in evenwicht zijn. Met de toekenning van de BNO Piet Zwart Prijs aan Ulf Moritz krijgt niet alleen de textielontwerper, maar ook het vakgebied een welverdiende erkenning.

‘ALS HIPPIE MET EEN BUSINESSPLAN REIS IK DE WERELD OVER.’

Sinds zijn optreden in Zomergasten is Daan Roosegaarde ook voor het grote publiek de wonderboy van de Nederlandse designwereld. Vol optimisme trakteerde hij 580.000 kijkers op een aanstekelijk verhaal over de mogelijkheden die ontstaan als technologie, bedrijfsleven en design samenkomen in werklust. Een verhaal dat de gedroomde DDW-ambassadeur liefst mondiaal verspreidt.

‘We kunnen nog veel verder gaan in het ontwerpen van onze wereld, van ons Utopia of ons Babylon. De horror van onze beroepsgroep is dat we nog steeds in de producthoek worden gestopt. Daar moeten we mee kappen, vind ik.’ ‘Toen ik werd gevraagd als ambassadeur voor de Dutch Design Week, was ik gelijk helder: ik heb geen tijd. Maar ja, ik heb ook een verantwoordelijkheid. Capital D zat deze winter in zwaar weer. Nu is er een andere toon, het gaat veel meer om de toekomst van het vakgebied, om future concepts en niet alleen maar mooie spulletjes tonen. Ik kan in dat proces iets betekenen en dus doe ik dat graag.’ ‘Er is enorm veel potentie en behoefte om ons vakgebied op een andere manier te benaderen. Het gaat niet om kunst, niet om design. Het gaat erom dat we onze zienswijze 180 graden weten te draaien. Wij kunnen autonome makers zijn: lichtend, een pionier, een voorbeeld.’

‘ODE AAN DE STAD’: STARTKIT IN BEELD

Artdirectors Klokgebouw Het Utrechtse Organisation in Design (OiD) is dit jaar aangesteld als artdirector van het Klokgebouw. Onder het curatorschap van Margo Konings en Margriet Vollenberg zijn drie van de vier grote hallen opnieuw ingevuld. Behalve aan ‘Ode aan de stad’ biedt hal 1 plaats aan de horeca van André Amaro. De enige locatie in het Klokgebouw die te bezoeken is zonder passe-partout. Wie er wel een heeft, kan in hal 2 werk bewonderen van zowel opkomende designers als gevestigde namen. Labels en merken zijn te vinden in hal 3, en in hal 4 komen de very important business people bij elkaar in het ABN AMRO House.

DDW-bezoekers die willen voorkomen dat ze verdwalen in alle design, doen er goed aan dit jaar te beginnen in het Klokgebouw. De gratis toegankelijke overzichtsexpositie ‘Ode aan de stad’ in hal 1 geeft in bewegend beeld een indruk van wat er te zien is op 22 verschillende locaties. Het ideale startpunt voor de bezoeker die zich nog moet oriënteren.

Transparante bollen Voor de ‘Ode aan de stad’ gaf OiD opdracht aan studenten grafisch vormgeving en multimedia van SintLucas (Eindhoven) om filmpjes te maken van 22 geselecteerde exposanten. Tijdens DDW wordt hun beeldmateriaal geprojecteerd op transparante bollen. Bezoekers krijgen zo in sneltreinvaart suggesties aangereikt voor de verdere invulling van hun dag, en een reden om alsnog 15 euro stuk te slaan voor een passe-partout. Wie niet verder komt dan tot hal 1, mist namelijk werk van onder anderen Kiki & Joost, Piet Hein Eek, Ontwerpduo en Yksi. UITGESPROKEN Design neemt stelling. Want wie alles wel best vindt, ontwerpt en verbetert niks. Om die traditie hoog te houden, leggen we dagelijks vijf statements voor aan een kopstuk uit de branche. In de eerste editie: Margo Konings van Organisation in Design (OiD), artdirector van het Klokgebouw. ALS JE DIT JAAR NIET IN HET KLOKGEBOUW BENT GEWEEST, HEB JE HET VOORNAAMSTE ONDERDEEL GEMIST. DDW is wat het is door de veelheid van exposities en evenementen die in de stad plaatsvinden en allemaal op hun manier bijdragen aan de week. Wel is het zo dat het Klokgebouw dit jaar spannender, interessanter, gevarieerder, internationaler en van een hoger niveau wordt dan ooit tevoren. Onder meer door de ruimte open te stellen voor internationale exposanten en door ons eigen netwerk aan te spreken, maar vooral door strenger te selecteren. MILAAN IS DE GROOTSTE, DDW IS DE SPANNENDSTE. DDW is de sociaalste, de week wordt door de stad gedragen en iedereen kan eraan deelnemen. Als bezoeker of exposant, met exposities, met muziek, met feesten en diners, met workshops, films, talkshows en ga zo maar door.

VROEGER WAS ALLES MINDER, IN DE TOEKOMST WORDT ALLES BETER. Volgens mij geen van beide. Wel kunnen we lering trekken uit het verleden om onze toekomst te verbeteren. Politiek en economisch staat de wereld al een tijdje op een omslagpunt; ook de designwereld wordt daardoor beïnvloed. Dit is al heel duidelijk te zien in de interdisciplinaire samenwerkingen tussen designers en wetenschappers of biologen (denk aan Joris Laarman, Susanna Soares, Eric Klarenbeek, enzovoorts), maar ook tussen designers en de industrie (denk aan Daan Roosegaarde en Heijmans, of Jannie Schmitz en Daan de Haan met Océ). Deze voorbeelden zijn voor mij tekenend voor de toekomst, met name voor de bredere rol die designers en andere creatieven in samenwerking met andere disciplines zullen gaan innemen.

DUTCH DESIGN HEEFT IN HET BUITENLAND VOORAL ZO’N GOEDE NAAM OMDAT HET LEKKER KLINKT. Dutch design staat al jaren op de kaart vanwege de verdiensten van de Nederlandse ontwerpwereld. Met dank aan degenen die de weg vrijmaakten met conceptueel, experimenteel en innovatief design, zoals Droog, Marcel Wanders, Jurgen Bey, Tejo Remy, Hella Jongerius en al die andere ontwerpers. Maar zeker ook met dank aan opleidingen als Design Academy Eindhoven en aan de Nederlandse overheid, die in het verleden durfde te investeren in cultuur. Dat alles bij elkaar heeft gezorgd voor een enorme omslag in de ontwerpwereld, en daarom is Dutch design zo’n grote naam geworden. Dat het toevallig ook lekker bekt, is mooi meegenomen.

HET IS ONLOGISCH DAT OOK BUITENLANDSE ONTWERPERS DIE GEEN RELATIE HEBBEN MET NEDERLAND ZICH PRESENTEREN OP DUTCH DESIGN WEEK. Juist niet! Zeker voor het professionele publiek wordt de relevantie van de week veel groter wanneer er een internationaal en breed aanbod van exposanten te zien is. Als artdirectors vinden wij het mede daarom heel belangrijk (Dutch) design in een internationale context te presenteren.

Terug in de tijd. Terug naar 10 oktober. Nog acht dagen te gaan tot de officiële opening. Hoe vergaat het de organisatie? Hoe wegen die laatste loodjes? Hoe hoog slaat de stressmeter uit? Deze krant gaat poolshoogte nemen. Onaangekondigd vallen we om 13.53 uur binnen. Uw dienaar en de onvolprezen hoffotograaf van DDW: Lisa Klappe. We schuiven ongestructureerd aan bij iedereen die langer dan vijf minuten op zijn of haar werkplek zit. En iedereen stelden we dezelfde vraag: waar ben je mee bezig? Bij binnenkomst is gelijk duidelijk dat de spanning en de druk oplopen. Er wordt een glazen wand geplaatst, er worden goodie bags gepakt en enveloppen gevuld. We zien meerdere staande vergaderingen en haastige onderonsjes. De kamer van directeur Martijn Paulen is dicht en blijft dicht. Maar dankzij de glazen wanden weten we zijn antwoord op onze vaste vraag: vergaderen, overleggen en telefoneren.

JILL LAURET. Sinds deze ochtend ‘freelance overloopputje van Raffaela’, zoals ze zichzelf omschrijft. Sinds deze ochtend belast met de social media, dus tweet en post ze er lustig op los. Op weg naar de tienduizend likes. Primeur van de dag: de inauguratiejurken van koningin Máxima worden voor het eerst aan het publiek getoond tijdens de overzichtstentoonstelling van Dutch Design Awards.

HEIDI VAN HEUMEN is officemanager, maar vooral rots in de branding bij DDW: ‘753 mails en 256 telefoontjes beantwoord.’ Hoogtepunten van de dag: ‘Mevrouw Van Heumen. als ik het station uit loop, moet ik dan links- of rechtsaf?’ Goede tweede: ‘Waar kan ik de kolfruimte vinden? Ik zie hem niet op de site.’ En 14 mails van mensen die binnen een uur na verzending een tweede mail stuurden met als gemene deler: ‘Heeft u mijn mail niet ontvangen? Ik heb nog niks gehoord.’

DRIES VAN WAGENBERG typt met rechts en eet met zijn andere hand een bruin broodje kaas. Hij is vandaag de ‘baas’ over vier vrijwilligsters van Fontys Hogeschool die helpen bij het vullen van de goodie bags. Vanmorgen hebben ze het halve kantoor leeggeruimd om plaats te maken voor een extra presentatieruimte. ‘Dus handen echt uit de mouwen vandaag.’ Naast medewerker is Dries ook deelnemer. ‘Drukbezet’ is een understatement.

Bij hoofd Marketing, Communicatie & Public Relations RAFFAELA VANDERMÜHLEN slaat de stressmeter hoger uit. Een social mediaprogramma, een hospitality-programma, het afstemmen van de diverse budgetten, overleg met Scherpontwerp over een advertentie en de nodige telefoontjes met de pers, waaronder de redacties van Pauw & Witteman, RTL Late Night en het NRC. We hebben het kort gehouden.

Honderd gram levende meelwormen kost negentig cent, weet INGE VAN OUDENAARDE sinds vanochtend. De spin van Jalila Essaïdi in het Designhuis moet immers ook eten. Later blijken de drukte en het licht te veel voor de spin, die voorlopig elders logeert. Gelukkig zijn er nog kosten door te rekenen, is er overleg met ABN AMRO over de signing in hal C, zijn er draaiboeken te maken en meer. Veel meer. Een evenement met de omvang van DDW beroert de hele stad. Dus ook de horeca en winkels in het centrum. JUSTINE KONTOU controleert, stimuleert, zoekt en vindt ruimtes voor ontwerpers, koppelt partijen en zorgt daarnaast goed voor zichzelf: dagelijks een fruitsapje van het Koffiehuisje.

Alle praktische vragen van deelnemers over het Klokgebouw komen bij MARCO GELISSEN terecht. Aansluitpunten, vierkante meters, routes, transport, water, stickers, posters, bewegwijzering, you name it. Marco heeft overal antwoord op.

JASMIJN VAN OOSTERUM studeert aan de Fontys Hogeschool en loopt stage bij DDW. Ze beheert de website en verzamelt alle persuitingen over DDW in een media-gallery. Naast de handen spandiensten die alle stagiaires overal ter wereld verrichten.

Programmamanager KATJA LUCAS bereidt als we haar spreken de vrijwilligersbijeenkomst van die avond voor. Ze verwacht ongeveer 130 mensen die gemotiveerd en geïnformeerd moe-

bags en enveloppen met persinfo. De vier jonge dames hebben overduidelijk het laagste stressniveau van de dag. De preview in de Machinekamer staat vandaag op de agenda van ELLEN RASS. Honderd gasten van hoofdsponsor ABN AMRO en DDW die met acht ontwerpers de week aftrappen een paar uur voor ‘de week’ officieel aftrapt. Van iedere ontwerper is er een ontwerp gekozen dat onderdeel is van deze vip-achtige kick-off. Van stoel tot servies en alles wat daartussen zou kunnen zitten. MARLOES PHILIPSE is de schakel tussen DDW en Scherpontwerp, het communicatiebureau. Een waarlijk herculische taak. Marloes zit dan ook meer bij Scherpontwerp dan achter haar eigen bureau en was ook deze dag niet aanwezig. Dus helaas konden we haar en haar sigaretje niet vastleggen. We overvielen DDW een beetje. En onszelf. Dus we hebben lang niet iedereen gesproken. Hoe dan ook was het duidelijk dat de stressmeters steeds verder uitslaan. Nog duidelijker was dat voorpret en hoopvolle verwachting dat ruimschoots goedmaken.
