The Magic of ASTAXANTHIN

There is increasing interest in the use of natural substances to prevent or treat diseases and to relieve the effects of traumas. This includes the search for the best natural treatments for conditions and trauma to the largest organ of the human body, the skin. Many skin abnormalities are associated with the effects of biochemical imbalances within the skin’s cells. A very important example is the effect of oxidative stress on the skin. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS, such as free radicals) and the cells’ ability to neutralize these ROS or repair damage that is caused by them. An active substance that has been extensively researched for its ability to prevent and relieve oxidative stress is astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is a natural pigment derived from marine species (e.g., shrimp, fish, algae, and crayfish) that has strong antioxidant properties and has been found to alleviate the effects of physical traumatic injury. The US FDA has designated astaxanthin as a substance that is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Yet, it has been found to have powerful properties that can prevent early burn-wound progression (conversion of

9

a superficial partial-thickness burn wound to a deep partial- or full-thickness burn wound). Clinical studies have demonstrated the ability of astaxanthin to protect organs from oxidative damage. For example, a study in soccer players showed that astaxanthin can increase the levels of an enzyme (paraoxonase 1) that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity but is decreased with oxidative stress (1). The astaxanthin treatment in the soccer players may, therefore, protect paraoxonase 1 from break-down allowing it to provide its antioxidant effects. Another study in men and women given topical and oral astaxanthin showed that the treatment lead to substantial improvement in the appearance of crow’s feet, skin elasticity and texture, and in skin moisture levels (2). These and other clinical studies indicate that astaxanthin acts as an antioxidant, blocks the damage that oxidative stress can cause, and prevents mediators of inflammation. It is a very effective natural substance with application as a topical and oral substance to relieve the effects of injury and aging.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO HEAL A BRUISE

You may have bumped your leg into a table or had a misstep that led to a painful twisting of the ankle

seasidemedicaltech.com

You may have bumped your leg into a table or had a misstep that led to a painful twisting of the ankle leading to sore or unsightly bruising. Bruising is a common result of skin trauma and is due to escape of blood from these broken capillaries and trapping of the blood under the skin. The severity of a bruise indicates whether you can help yourself or if you need medical attention. When in doubt though, do not hesitate to seek advice and care from your healthcare provider. Below are some steps you can take to help get your skin back to normal faster. Step 1: Rest – Limit use of the affected body part to avoid more leakage of blood beneath the skin, which can worsen the bruising. Step 2: Ice – Apply ice right away but not directly to the skin (wrap in a towel or other skin-protecting material). The ice can be applied to the bruised area for 15 min. Then wait from 30 minutes to an hour before repeating. This helps reduce swelling and blood flow to the area, limiting the size of the bruise. It is good to do this step with some compression also (but not too much); this further reduces blood flow and leakage into the skin. Step 3: Elevation - Raise the bruised area above heart level. This directs blood away from the bruise. Step 4: Heat – Although ice usage is crucial at the earliest stages of bruising, using some heat a few days later will help promote normal blood flow carrying healing cells and factors to the area. Step: 5: Massaging the area further promotes normal blood flow. Massaging using Seaside’s Post-Traumatic

leading to sore or unsightly bruising.

Eczema is a form of dermatitis, inflammation of the skin, that is characterized by a dry, rough, scaly, and red appearance. Eczema located on the lips is referred to simply as lip eczema. Although lip eczema appears to have no known external cause in many cases, it is often a reaction to irritation by some substance. A study in Spain showed that most cases of lip eczema are allergic contact dermatitis or atopic dermatitis. Further, cosmetics and topical medications were the main culprits (1). Some people are more susceptible than others to develop lip eczema. Therefore, there is a hereditary (genetic) factor associated with the condition. Lip eczema becomes a significant problem when it is chronic and difficult to resolve. When lip eczema is present, there is an unending dryness that does not respond to the typical over-the-counter lip balms. The lips appear red, visibly dry, flaky, and often peel. Common cosmetic products have ingredients that often trigger lip eczema. For instance, the same lip balms some people use in an attempt to relieve dry

lips actually can cause eczema or make it worse. Lanolin in lip products such as lip balms has been identified as an allergen causing lip eczema in some people. Beeswax is another component notorious for causing contact dermatitis. Fragrances are one of the main ingredients in cosmetics and lotions that cause skin irritation. Fragrances in lipstick products and lip balms can also trigger lip eczema.

from falls or other minor skin traumas. This antibacterial ointment contains bacitracin zinc, neomycin sulfate, and polymyxin B sulfate. As the most popular over-the-counter skin drug, Neosporin is effectively marketed as the best first line of defense against minor wound infection and for speedy wound healing. Yet, many who trust and rely on this product do not consider the drawbacks of its use.

To relieve lip eczema, some people are prescribed hydrocortisone cream, but once stopped, the problem often returns. Some opt for shea butter and essential oils such as lavender oil to relieve dryness. MatrX B Response Gel contains natural ingredients with multiple skin protecting and healing functions. Our very own founder, Dr. Yazdani struggled with lip eczema for 10 years with no relief from a diversity of skin treatment products, including hydrocortisone cream. However, after twice daily application of MatrX B Response Gel, she noticed drastic improvement of lip dryness and the eczema resolved permanently. Avoiding products containing allergens and using products that promote skin health, such as MatrX B Response Gel, are viable options to address lip eczema.

Besides a lack of evidence that it heals wounds any faster than the body’s natural mechanisms, the main concern regarding widespread use of Neosporin is its three main antibiotic ingredients. People are becoming increasingly aware of the concept of bacterial resistance. Improper and unnecessary use of antibiotics run the risk of overgrowth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This phenomenon is a public health problem that leaves many people with infections that are hard to treat.

Is it time to ditch the Neosporin?

Many typical medicine cabinets contain the wellknown Neosporin ointment or cream as the “go-to first-aid remedy used for common scrapes and cuts

11

Our skin and other areas of the body contain bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that are actually good guys. This collection of microorganisms on our skin is called our skin microbiome or flora (1). Instead of hurting us, they actually help protect us from being overcome by disease-causing microorganisms. Unfortunately, these good organisms can be killed by antibiotics such as those in Neosporin. This risk is higher when the triple antibiotic is used when there is not even an infection. What can result are skin problems much worse than the minor cut that was treated in the first place. Due to the loss of the good microorganism defenses, fungal and other microorganisms take advantage and cause infection. Furthermore, Neosporin poses risk of allergic reactions (2) and irritation to skin. As mentioned, the product contains neomycin. This antibiotic is the main component responsible for the incidence of allergy seen with Neosporin use. These allergic reactions can be immediate or take a little time (up to a week) to develop. Better approaches to minor wounds are proper cleaning and using alternative natural products that are nonallergenic, nonirritating, and that do not contain unnecessary antibiotics.

#2 Popping pimples - This is a sure way to make healing difficult because bacteria can infect the skin, irritation can increase, and the chances of scaring are greater. Instead of popping pimples, use of MatrX B Response Gel can help to relieve inflammation from acne, sooth irritation, and reduce swelling. #3 Not seeing a doctor - Being examined by your doctor can help you to avoid many self-treatment mistakes and determine if there is some underlying cause that needs to be addressed.

Acne is a condition of the skin affecting the hair follicles and oil glands. When these become blocked by sebum (medical term for waxy oil produced by glands in your skin), dead skin cells, and bacteria, typical lesions and inflammatory responses occur. Acne can be caused by hormonal changes, stress, or plain genetics. People often make some common mistakes when trying to effectively treat their acne, ultimately worsening the condition or making it difficult to clear. Some of these mistakes can be responsible for the permanent scarring or spots many end up having. Recognizing these mistakes can help you obtain the best results in controlling acne.

#4 Improper use of medication - Over or under applying a prescribed medical treatment can retard healing. Overuse of treatment enhances irritation and underuse fails to achieve desired effects. Stopping acne treatment too early will not give the process of healing sufficient time. Some do not realize that abruptly stopping the use of anti-acne medication as soon as pimples are gone can lead to a reappearance weeks later. It is best to taper down and continue using a product once or twice a week to keep acne from returning.

Top 8 Acne Treatment Mistakes

#5 Using too many products simultaneously Multiple products can interfere with the efficacy of an individual product, cause more irritation, and increase the risk of scar formation. A two or threestep approach using Seaside’s Cytotone Cleanser and Toner followed by The Response Gel and an oil-free moisturizer can simplify and streamline your daily regimen while providing effective acne control. #6 Using incompatible skincare products - Lotions and cosmetics that are not designed for acneprone skin adds insult to injury. Stick to products that are formulated for your type of skin. Avoidance of non-alcohol based toners, harsh cleansers, and antimicrobial washes on daily basis is sure way to prevent aggravation of blemishes.

#1 Over cleansing - Aggressive cleaning can make acne worse due to the skin irritation and over drying. Gentle cleansing and toning with a non-alcohol based product such as Cytotone Waterless Cleanser can be used on different skin types to provide pH-balanced skin cleansing.

#7 Failure to hydrate the skin - Stripping the natural moisture from the skin on a daily basis with harsh cleansers or antimicrobial washes is actually counterproductive. All skin must be moisturized. This will not make acne worse as long as an oil-based moisturizer is avoided. #8 Forgetting overall self-care - Diet and hormonal status are important aspects of acne development. Your healthcare provider will help you to determine what to focus on regarding diet, life-style, and exposures that can provoke acne and delay healing.

Common Cosmetics and Skin Inflammation

Clear and healthy skin is something we all want, and we commit to measures to achieve and maintain this. With the intention of achieving healthy skin, or at least healthy looking skin, many actually unknowingly use products that do the opposite. Many cosmetics contain ingredients that hinder skin health. These include anything from moisturizes to those that are used as make-up. However, many of these products have ingredients that take the skincare journey in an unwanted direction. One of the primary harmful of these ingredients is fragrances and dyes(1). Many cosmetics and shampoos contain these chemical substances that can cause irritation and inflammation. With repeated exposure to harmful substances, a number of responses can occur such as rashes, swelling, clogging of pours, and more. For example, eczema, a group of conditions that cause dermatitis (skin inflammation), can flare up from exposure to various skin irritants. These chemicals can irritate any skin type, but are particularly irritating to those with sensitive skin or who are prone to eczema flare ups. Acne is a skin condition that results when follicles of the skin are clogged with dead skin cells and oil. These clogged areas can become infected with bacteria, swell, and lead to pimples. Many common skincare products contain ingredients that can make acne worse or cause it by promoting clogged

13

pores. A study was reported about skin comedones in women after receiving skin beauty treatments (2). One example of a comedogenic ingredient is stearic acid. In addition to avoiding products that can cause inflammatory responses, nightly cleansing of the skin with natural organic cleanser that are non-irritating and non-comedogenic is an excellent way to help achieve healthier, clearer skin and prevent dermatitis and clogged pores due to exposure to irritating substances. Skin cleansers, moisturizes, and other skin cosmetics are available that contain these types of alternative healthier ingredients. Learning more about and being aware of the ingredients in common skincare products and opting for organic alternatives is a positive step toward healthier vibrant skin.

Relief From Minor Muscle Pain

The unpleasant sensation we know as pain is a common bodily response to many different stimuli. For example, we often experience varying levels of pain after exercise, particularly after starting or re-entering an exercise program. This is often a reaction of the tissues to activity that they are not accustomed to. This is referred to as delayed onset muscle soreness and is mainly due to very small tears in the muscle fibers. These tears provoke an immune response by the body’s leukocytes (white blood cells) so that the muscle fiber repair process begins. Various types of leukocytes in this process release inflammatory cytokines that cause the post-exercise muscle pain (1) by acting on nociceptors, receptors that sense damage and send pain signals (2).

seasidemedicaltech.com

An example is The Response Gel with MatrX B, which can be applied directly to the skin for relief of skin and muscle soreness. MatrX B contains natural ingredients arnica, astaxanthin, and witch hazel. The combination of these ingredients provides antioxidant effects, relieves pain, and supports the skin and muscle repair processes (3, 4, 5). For minor skin and muscle trauma from other causes (bumps, sprains, strains), the same recommendations can be applied. However, if severe pain is felt or soreness does not subside within a week, medical attention of a healthcare provider should be sought to determine the existence of other more serious injury or illness and to get the best specific therapy.

Toner Use: The Import Second Step in Facial Skin Cleansing

seasidemedicaltech.com

The average person’s facial skin care regimen often involves using a cleanser, rinsing, then applying a moisturizer. However, something is missing here. An important and beneficial second step in facial cleansing is the use of a toner. A toner is a waterbased liquid applied to the face after using and rinsing off the facial cleanser. The role of the toner is to remove traces of dirt, oil, and makeup residue that is not completely removed during the normal cleansing process. Toners usually consist of extracts and moisturizers that not only complete the cleansing process, but can help to balance the skin’s pH (acidity level) that can be affected after the use of a cleanser. Using a toner can bring the skin’s pH back to its normal slightly acidic level. There are toners than contain substantial levels of simple alcohols such as SD alcohol. These are often categorized as astringents for oily skin. However, these are not helpful for oily or any other skin types because alcohol-containing products irritate, dry, and strip natural oils from the skin, causing damage by increasing the pH of skin to higher than 5.

Seaside Discovery

If muscle and skin trauma occur with limited inflammation, simply resting the muscles for a couple of days can give the body time to recover and prevent additional trauma. Applying an icepack on the sore muscle areas in the earliest stages (first few days of pain occurrence) has analgesic effects. Before resuming activity, a little warmth can then be applied to the muscles. If these approaches do not provide enough relief, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs with analgesic properties (such as ibuprofen) or a plain analgesic such as acetaminophen can be used to help with muscle pain. However, topical relief is also beneficial and a great option to get results without taking medications.

Gentle exfoliating properties of some toners are beneficial for acne-prone skin. A published study in individuals with acne showed that incorporating a cleansing, toning, and acne-medication regimen (three steps) led to a significant improvement in acne and skin appearance (1). However, the application of a toner is also important for those who do not have a particular skin problem. Toners help maintain healthy skin texture, close pores, and reduce the spaces between skin cells to help prevent penetration of dirt and other impurities. Skin moisture can be replaced in the skin with toners. Proper moisture is needed to maintain or improve elasticity and smoothness of the skin. After cleansing, toners can be applied to the skin using a cotton ball and gently dabbing on the skin or by using a spray bottle. This can be applied whenever the skin is regularly cleansed, such as morning and night. A moisturizer can then be applied after the toner dries. Gentle non-alcohol toners such as Cytotone Waterless Cleanser are available that are designed for different skin types to achieve optimal skin care results.

Why MatrX B

Let’s think about the “go-to” products many people use whenever they experience a cut, bruise, or burn. The problems with many of these “go-to” products lie in the ingredient list. These commonly used products often contain harsh chemicals, preservatives, and alcohols that are very harmful to the skin. For example, after a firstdegree burn, you might run to a product like a triple antibiotic ointment, generic for Neosporin. These products normally contain one or more types of antibiotics. Avoiding antibiotic creams for your “run-ofthe-mill” scrapes, cuts, and burns is important because: Using antibiotics when there is no infection can harm the beneficial protective bacteria of the skin (the skin’s microflora). Using nonspecific antibiotics for the incorrect time period and in the wrong way can lead to antibiotic resistance. This means that the harmful bacteria can build a resistance to the antibiotic. This will make healing from an actual infection more difficult.

17

Another issue with these common creams and ointments is: They contain petroleum Dr. Oz advises us to “steer clear of any products that list petroleum jelly or mineral oil on the ingredient list. The European Union has banned many petroleum jelly products, and experts are concerned they could be linked to cancer. Women with breast cancer have twice the levels of hydrocarbons (substances found in petroleum jelly) in their breasts than women who haven’t had breast cancer.”

Compare to Response Gel with MatrX B which contains no petroleum or mineral oil yet still provides healing ingredients to treat any trauma within minutes. Now, let’s say you or your child is experiencing a very painful sunburn. The obvious product to reach for would be a supermarket aloe vera gel. However, when was the last time you took a good look at that ingredient list? Here are some “no-no’s” that are found in most aloe vera gels.

seasidemedicaltech.com

Let’s say you’re undergoing some swelling and bruising from a treatment such as Botox or fillers. You might want to pick up something like Arnicare.

Fragrance This is the beauty industry’s favorite catch-all phrase. The word “fragrance” covers any combination of over 3,100 chemicals. Some of these chemicals are associated with serious side effects, such as hormone disruption and reproductive problems. Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate This preservative agent is known to cause allergic reactions when applied to the skin. There are also concerns that it is acutely toxic if inhaled. Who would want to put that on their kid’s skin?

Compare to Response Gel with MatrX B which does not contain any of the above ingredients; instead, it

seasidemedicaltech.com

Why MatrX B

incorporates ingredients such as arnica, witch hazel, and astaxanthin, an antioxidant powerhouse more potent than vitamin C.

The problem with Arnicare is that it is packed with alcohol and artificial preservatives, which cause dryness and irritation to skin.

Compare to Response Gel with MatrX B

which contains a high concentrate of Organic Arnica Montana and other bioactives making it simply a better choice. 18
