John Payton Hood and Katie Hewes ~ AUGUST 9, 2014 ~ By Katie Hewes Hood

e have known each other for as long as I can remember. We were both born and raised in Gulfport, and both went to high school and graduated from St. John. We began dating in the fall of 2007 during my freshmen year at Ole Miss. Our relationship started in the Grove at the LSU football game that same year. John Payton introduced me as his girlfriend to one of his uncles, and the rest is history. Fast forward to the LSU game against Ole Miss in 2013, and we again found ourselves together in the Grove. I was in my final year of law school, and John Payton had come to Oxford for the weekend. Before the game, we ran into John Payton’s uncle in the Grove. As he walked up to us, he and John Payton began reenacting the same conversation he had with us at the LSU game six years before. This time, John Payton introduced me as his “fiancé” instead of his “girlfriend.” I laughed it off, thinking he used the word “fiancé” on accident, but before I could react, he was down on one knee proposing. We knew the moment we got engaged that we wanted to be married on the Gulf Coast. With both of us sharing the same hometown, it made perfect sense to be married in a place where we had, and would continue, to call home. Having our friends and family as a part of our engagement and wedding was equally important, and made it all so very special. We wanted to have a classic Southern wedding, and be able to share our joy and happiness with our loved ones. The Gulf Coast allowed us to do just that. Our wedding and the months leading up to the big day would not have been possible without the help and support of our family and friends, especially my mom, Paula Hewes. She was my life-line

throughout the entire planning process, especially while I finished law school in Oxford five hours away from home. Her hard work and organization allowed us to have fun throughout the planning, and created a wonderful, stress-free wedding day. We were married on August 9, 2014, at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral. My uncle, Deacon Richard Henderson, along with Father Tommy Conway and Monsignor Joseph Mercier, officiated over the nuptial Mass. Monsignor Mercier married my parents nearly thirty years ago, and it was very special to have him, Father Tommy, and my uncle marry us. I wore an Anna Maier – Ulla Maija custom-designed white French Alençon lace gown over a fluted double charmeuse underdress. The dress featured a scalloped sweetheart neckline and lace-covered buttons, which extended to the end of the chapel-length train. In my bouquet, I carried my paternal grandmother’s lace-embroidered handkerchief, which my mother also carried on her wedding day. My sister, cousin, John Payton’s sister, and long-time friends made up my bridesmaids. The bridesmaids wore one shoulder champagne chiffon gowns, and their bouquets were made of ivory, white, and blush garden roses accented by white hydrangeas and Freesia. The groomsmen consisted of John Payton’s family and lifelong friends, and wore black tuxedoes donned with white rose boutonnières. Our reception was held at the Slavonian Lodge, where guests dined on appetizers and hors d’oeuvres and danced throughout the evening to the music of Musical Fantasy. Paige Luckett of Southern Flavor Catering created delicious food for guests, including seafood gumbo shooters, shrimp tacos, and a raw oyster and chargrilled oyster bar. Our

floral arrangements were designed by the wonderfully talented Gail Majure, who, with the help of Cardinal’s Flowers, made breathtaking arrangements for the wedding party and reception. Roses, lilies, and hydrangeas filled the reception venue and accented guest tables throughout. Pictures of us from the years of our relationship were placed on the guest book tables, where Ken Murphy photography books consisting of snapshots throughout the state of Mississippi were available for guests to sign. Nita Lee of Pass Christian created the bridal cake and groom’s cake. The groom’s cake was a nod to our Ole Miss roots, designed in the shape of Mississippi with our alma mater’s logo, and the cake table included pictures of us in the Grove (including pictures of us from both the 2007 and 2013 LSU games!). Susie Davis with A Plan to Remember was our church and assistant coordinator. Michele Beeson and her team from Salon 9354 created beautiful hairstyles for the bridal party, and Mallory Fitzgerald provided wedding-day makeup. We feel so blessed and grateful to have been able to share such a wonderful and special time with our friends and family, and none of it would have been possible without the love, generosity, and support of our parents. I wouldn’t change the last seven years with John Payton for the world, and I am looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together.

any girls dream their whole lives of a big, beautiful wedding, and some have it planned before they even meet the love of their life. I was a little different. I always fantasized about eloping to a peaceful island with the person I would marry, a preacher and a photographer. When I met my now husband, Colton Ball, those plans turned into a compromise, which became a big wedding on the beach in South Mississippi. First things first: We needed a date. With the wedding location planned for the beach, weather was important. We did not want it to be too hot, too humid or too chilly, so we decided on the fall. We checked the Ole Miss football schedule and then consulted the farmer’s almanac. We decided on Nov. 8. After we picked the day, my mom told

us it was the same date she married my dad 34 years ago, which made it even more special! With 10 months until wedding day, the planning began. The next big decision was a location. I thought about several options, but in the end I fell in love with St. Thomas Catholic Church reception hall. The big windows overlooking the beach and the beautiful outside courtyard and fountain were exactly what I had in mind, and luckily they had the date available and we booked it. Another place I loved but knew would not be big enough was the Longfellow Civic Center in Bay St. Louis. The modern look with lots of white on the inside offset with the dark floors are stunning. Then add in the wraparound porch overlooking the water and I knew I had to do

something there. We booked the place for the rehearsal dinner. I thought I would try and plan my wedding on my own with the help of my mom, but after some thought we decided it would be best to have someone who knows what they are doing to help guide us in the process. Jean McGrury with After the Proposal was the woman for the job. Jean has been coordinating weddings for most of her life. Her attention to detail and pure talent was impressive. Throughout what can be a stressful experience, Jean always made me feel like everything was under control. After I checked a few big decisions off my list, I had to find a dress. Note to all brides: When they say it takes six months for a dress to come in, it really does! Make sure to give yourself enough time to get a dress in. My first stop to find a dress was Pearl’s Place in Metairie, La. My mom, Colton’s mom and I waited for about an hour for them to call my name. I tried on six dresses and found the one. The sweet woman who helped me, Lisa, was amazing because I had no idea what I wanted. I gave her no suggestions and liked every one she picked out. But when I put on the sixth dress, I got tears in my eyes and knew that was the one and said, “yes” to the dress. Colors were another important choice because they set the whole theme for the wedding. I wanted something elegant and classy but different so I choose silver and gold. My bridesmaids wore gold sequined dresses and the groomsmen wore gray suits with silver vests and ties. I wanted my bridesmaids to feel comfortable and to be able to spend what they wanted on a dress so I let them pick out their own dresses. Next on the list of things to do was to pick other vendors: A photographer, DJ, a caterer and someone to bake the cake. Jean had some great suggestions, and my mom and I did some of our own research online and found the perfect people to help. These decisions, according to wedding timelines, should be made within six to eight months, but for some it was more like four or five months. Sarah Brown with Sarah Brooke Photography is so incredibly sweet and talented. Her pictures tell a story, which is exactly what I wanted. We first met over coffee and she told me to take the contract home and think about it; but I didn’t need time to think, I knew I had to have her. She turned out to be just as amazing as I thought. When the wedding was all said and done and I saw the pictures, I was blown away by how she captured the day. Sarah’s pictures show every emotion and detail of the wedding. Marcel Lanoux with Nighshift Sounds came highly recommended from Jean and from The Knot. He was amazing and his website was so incredibly helpful. It gives you a list of popular songs for every part of

the wedding. Marcel did a great job of feeling out the crowd and playing music that kept the crowd dancing. Food was a very important choice for Colton — he loves food! As soon as we took a bite of Chef Patrick Heim’s dessert pies at our first meeting, he had us hooked. Chef Patrick impressed him with not only his creative food choices but also the taste. Our first (and only) cake tasting was at French Kiss Pastries. The cakes were so good! Not only did we decide to use Jackie, but we also asked her if we could have two different flavors. Since we decided to do our rehearsal dinner at a venue and not a restaurant, we needed another caterer. Starfish Café in Bay St. Louis was the perfect choice. Not only was the food unbelievably delicious, but the concept of the café is something Colton and I wanted to support. Along the way, there were many, many other decisions to be made. Pinterest was my best friend! I had three wedding boards and got so many great ideas from different pins, sometimes it was difficult choosing which one to go with. I found everything from my cake to ideas for save the dates and decorations. Luckily, when it came to putting some of those ideas into action, my cousin Jeremy Huggins was able to help me out. Jeremy is a graphic designer and took my pins as inspiration and created the perfect save the dates, invitations and even thank-you cards. Another tool I found very helpful was “The Knot Ultimate Wedding Planner and Organizer.” The book has way more information than I ever could have thought about, but it was great for me to be able to write in and use as a reference. I also was very thankful for the wedding planning timeline, which tells you when to send out the invites and book vendors; that really kept me on track. After 10 months of planning, it was really neat to see everything come together. One of the reasons I had always wanted to elope was because so many people get caught up in all the details and forget about what the day is actually about. Throughout the entire planning process, my philosophy was not to stress or get caught up in the little things because when it’s all said and done, if you both say, “I do,” to spending the rest of your lives together, that’s all that matters. While my wedding was not what I always thought it would be, at the end of the day, it turned out better than I could have ever dreamed. Everything was perfect in my eyes, and I am now married to the man of my dreams, someone who makes me laugh harder than anyone else can and who loves me unconditionally. If I could give any advice to the brides to be out there, it is just to try to enjoy every step of the way and never forget what the wedding is all about.

John Wesley Burks and Christina Ann Carter ~ NOVEMBER 8, 2014 ~

Many romances start with a love-at-first-sight moment, just as it did for Christina Ann Carter and John Wesley Burks. However, for this young couple, the setting happened to be kindergarten. By second grade, Carter and Burks, both from Gulfport, were officially sweethearts, even attending movies together, under the care of Carter’s older brother, Joel. But in 2000, when the two were in seventh grade, Carter, 27, transferred to a new school, and, as often happens in youth, the two lost touch. Fast forward a decade, and fate found a way to rekindle the playground connection. During a night out with best friend Julie Clark Bounds Carter crossed paths with Burks, now also 27. “We were so shocked to see each other that we both stumbled over our words,” said Carter. “All I could think of was how handsome he is!” Quickly, the two were sweethearts for the second time around. And, during the next two years, the couple became inseparable, all while focusing on their burgeoning careers – she as the design coordinator at Island View Casino Resort and he as a registered nurse at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. But on Aug. 21, 2013, Carter’s birthday, she received a gift that would change her life. Carter woke to find that Burks had planned the entire day for her. “Wesley loves surprising me,” she said. And surprise her he did, with a celebratory scavenger hunt that included a limo and a full day of pampering. After appointments for hair, makeup, shopping and more came to an end, the limo headed to the Perkinston home of Carter’s father Rick Carter and stepmother Stephanie Carter, Blackjack Ranch, where Carter believed she would be celebrating a joint birthday with her brother, Jake. “ “As we pulled into the ranch, I saw my dad walk out in a suit. I then started to realize what was going on,” said Carter with a sweet smile as she remembers the moment. Her father escorted her to a rose-covered balcony where Carter’s sister, Alexa Carter was singing “Marry Me.“ At that point, I cried off all the justapplied makeup. Then I saw Wesley, and from there, I don’t remember much except for the fact that I said “yes!’” On Nov. 8, the couple were married in front of 400 guests at Blackjack

Ranch, during an unforgettable ceremony, planned by wedding coordinators Tessa Rogers and Tammy Kite. The bride was stunning in an ivory Lazaro dress, which featured a ball-gown skirt of tulle, sprinkled with delicate rhinestones, and a beaded and intricately embroidered bodice, enhancing the jewel neckline and cap sleeves. Among a draping of flowers in soft ivories and blush pinks, showering strands of shimmering crystals and glowing candles, the outdoor tented reception created an enchanted evening for the couple and their guests. The Todd O’Neill Band, played into the night, before the couple were sent off in a flurry of best wishes by family and friends to their honeymoon. Looking back on the wedding, the newly named Mrs. Burks said, “There were so many moments that I will cherish for the rest of my life, but the most memorable would have to be when we were preparing to take pictures after the ceremony: My husband looked at me and said, ‘I couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful dress for you to wear today. You are so beautiful,’” she recalled. The couple, who reside in Biloxi, are a testament to what happens when love, even the youngest of love, is given time to bloom.

Austen and I feel very honored to have each of our parents still married for over 30 years, and we wanted our wedding to be about honoring family values, heritage and traditions. Therefore, we incorporated as many family heirloom pieces into our wedding as possible, starting with the engagement ring. It was custom-designed to incorporate stones taken from a ring of my mother’s, stones taken from a ring of Austen’s great aunt and a center stone hand-selected by Austen’s mom and aunt. From the handkerchiefs to the special reception dance honoring our parents, every element of our wedding had great sentimental value to our parents and to us. Since many of our family members are no longer with us, incorporating their heirlooms allowed us to have them there in spirit as we began our lives together. My family lost our home in Biloxi and everything in it to hurricane Katrina in 2005, so the heirloom pieces incorporated into the wedding from my family were those that we’d carefully salvaged from the remaining rubble. We successfully incorporated many of those recovered family treasures into our own wedding day, such as my maternal grandmother’s crystal punch bowls that held the dried lavender sachets that were tossed as we left the reception, the brass candelabra that served as table centerpieces, and the only three existing pictures of my parents from their own wedding that were displayed next to the wedding cake. Among the debris, we also recovered my paternal grandmother’s wedding rings and her vintage wedding cake topper. After long journeys, her cake topper found new life atop our own wedding cake, and her double ring set sparkled on my right hand as my “something old” while I walked down the aisle. For our 10:30 am Easter weekend ceremony, we also included a number of sentimental pieces from the groom’s family as well. Austen wore gold cufflinks engraved with the initials “A. S.” These originally were purchased in England around the turn of the century by his great-grandfather, Arthur Theophilus Silkman. We cut our wedding cake with an engraved silver serving set belonged to his great-greatgreat-grandmother, dating back to 1877. The ornate silver cake servers for the groom’s cake were the same his paternal grandparents used at their wedding in 1939. The communion wafers were made from scratch by Austen’s father and placed in a sterling silver bowl that was a wedding gift to Austen’s parents in 1973. The communion chalice was a sterling silver cup won by Austen’s great grandfather while serving in the Philippines during WWI. These are just a few of our favorite elements used in the wedding, which subtly reminded us of the family members who came before us. Following our mid-morning garden ceremony on the chapel steps at the historic Oak Crest Mansion Inn, we had a champagne jazz brunch reception complete with traditional lawn games that our parents and grandparents grew up playing. The festive brunch put a Southern twist on antique French charm that radiated regality. Culinary offerings included traditional brunch entrees’ and featured local seafood selections as a way to honor my mother’s family heritage in the local seafood industry. Our wedding was like no other because our goal was to make each guest’s experience as unique and personal as possible. Every detail of the ceremony and celebration that day simultaneously honored the past while completely encompassing who we are as individuals and who will be as one family in the future. Matched! By Kylie Rowell Joiner I married my husband Ryan Joiner on July 26, 2014, at The Old Place in Gautier. It was my perfect fairytale wedding. Before I tell you about the best day of my life, I’ll tell you how it all began. Three and a half years earlier, my mom and Ryan’s boss, who are friends and coach together on a high- school soccer team, decided to play matchmakers for Ryan and me. Finally they introduced us at the soccer field one day while I was in town visiting my parents. Ryan eventually asked me to come with him to the team’s soccer banquet. It may have been the most awkward date of both of our lives. My advice would be to never go on a first date with your parents and your date’s boss. However, we decided to meet up again when my sorority at USM, Delta Gamma, had a date party. From that night, I knew there was something special about this guy. He drove an hour and a half to hang out with a bunch of screaming sorority girls and probably made more friends by the end of the night than I had in two years. On July 7, 2013, a little over two years later, we were on vacation with my family at Orange Beach, Ala. One night at the beach, Ryan told me we were going to visit some of his friends down the road before we went to dinner with my family. We went to this condo to supposedly meet his friends, and he told me we should just walk out on the pier and wait for them there. He was acting very strangely, but I’m not a very observant person, so I just went with it. Little did I know, a bunch of our friends were walking up behind us with a camera filming the whole thing. He turned to me, grabbed my hands, and that’s when I finally saw everyone behind us. He said so many sweet things, got on one knee, and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said, “YES!” through all my sobbing! As he tried to slide the ring on my finger, both of our hands were shaking so much that he dropped the ring. Remember we are still on a pier at this point. Luckily, he caught the ring right before it fell into the cracks of the pier. That night, we celebrated with our friends and family, and it will be a night I will never forget. We planned the wedding for July 26, 2014. The ceremony and reception both took place at The Old Place. It was a very hot, yet beautiful Mississippi summer day. Our wedding planner, Terrica Williams McKee, designed the beautiful flower arrangement, which included white, cream and coral roses and an assortment of other flowers. As my bridesmaids walked down the aisle in sky blue, floor-length, strapless Alfred Angelo gowns, violinist Jenee Wright played “Prince of Denmark’s March.” They were escorted by Ryan’s groomsmen, who were wearing traditional black tuxedos, black vests, and black bowties, while Ryan wore a black tuxedo, white vest and white bowtie. As I walked down the aisle escorted by my father, I wore an Alfred Angelo white flowing gown marked with jewels around the sweetheart lining. My hair, styled by my longtime hairdresser and friend Leslie Posey, was elegantly curled and halfway back. For my something old, my grandmother Willie Joyce Rowell gave me her broach to place on my bouquet of white roses. She turned 91 this year and was in attendance for the wedding. That was a very special part of the day for me. I also wore sparkling blue sandals under my dress for my something blue. Once the ceremony commenced, guests dined on Scranton’s Catering, Pascagoula, during the reception. The DJ, By The Bay’s Jason Skelton, began the reception music, and our first dance was to “All of Me” by John Legend. Once we finished our dances, we cut the bridal and groom’s cakes. The bridal cake was a three-tier buttercream cake with white, cream, and coral roses surrounding a “J” initial at the top. The groom’s cake was a chocolate cake with a picture of Mississippi State’s mascot, Bully, pulling Ole Miss’ mascot, Colonel Reb, by the mustache. The groom’s table was surrounding by Mississippi State objects and pictures of the bride and groom in their Mississippi State gear.

Ryan Joiner and Kylie Rowell ~ JULY 26, 2014 ~ Once the cakes were cut, it was time to throw the bouquet. I don’t know if many people knew this, but I knew who I was throwing it to. Little did she know, my best friend and maid of honor, Rachel Reeves, was about to get engaged a couple days later. So “unintentionally” I made sure the bouquet went to her. She caught it and surprisingly her now fiancé caught the garter as well. I thought that was a great way to share our happiness with a couple who was about to start their own journey. For our honeymoon, we decided to go to Secrets St. James Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. With help from Viagio Travel and their amazing staff, we were able to have the honeymoon of our dreams. The resort was breathtaking and the weather was beautiful. It was the most perfect way to spend our first week as Mr. and Mrs. Joiner.

Just SIDE-STEP those wedding-day blunders

f you are planning a wedding, then you have heard all of the horror stories. The photographer lost the disk of pictures, the cake fell over, the groom passed out on the altar … the bride passed out on the altar. Bottom line is that there are so many moving parts to a wedding that an “issue” is going to happen. But there are several ways you can avoid most common mishaps and stress-producers. The secret is knowing what those things are that will cause you the most heartburn. Here’s a breakdown by key player:

Bride

THE DRESS Will it fit? One of the most terrifying things a bride considers is whether her gown will fit the day of the wedding. There are tons of tips to help avoid this, but there are really two biggies: Hire a reputable seamstress and be careful what you eat and drink the day or two before the wedding. Watching what you eat and drink will not only help you avoid feeling like the dress doesn’t fit, but also boosts your confidence because you feel good. THE PHOTOS There is but one real record of the day’s events and that is the photography. There’s really not much control a bride has over this on the big day, so be sure you hire a good one!

THE RECEPTION Will there be enough food and drink? Will everyone have a place to sit? Will the flowers or decorations be pretty and what we ordered? Will everyone behave? Will the weather cooperate? Hire a professional wedding planner to coordinate the wedding. Part of the planner’s job is to point you to reputable, reliable vendors who know how to plan a wedding.

THE COST If ever there was a time for a family to communicate well, it’s while planning a wedding. It is imperative that everyone is as transparent as possible so the budget — not to mention feelings — isn’t trampled.

THE GUEST LIST There are so many traps the bride’s family can fall into related to the guest list. Is there a good mix of parents’ friends and brides’ friends so the bride will feel like it’s her day? Are the groom’s family and friends represented appropriately? Making sure the mother of the groom assists with the guest list and is involved with this part of the planning will go a long way to future good relationships.

So, after reviewing the things that cause stress, here are some ways to avoid them as much as possible. First of all, NEVER scrimp on these things:

Ditto for the cake. Cakes made in a home kitchen will more than likely not handle being moved from the kitchen to the venue. As an alternative, have your baker friend make something for the rehearsal dinner.

Unless your best friend from college is a professional photographer, it’s probably not a good idea to have her take your wedding pictures. Aside from that, you’ll want her to be your guest, not a vendor at your wedding. No matter if she insists and says she wants it to be her gift, don’t do it. instead suggest that perhaps she can document your showers or bridesmaid’s luncheon.

FEELING INCLUDED It is so easy to make the groom’s mother feel special and included. This is especially important if she doesn’t have a daughter. Goodwill can be created by including her in a couple of important highlights along the way. For instance, make sure she’s invited to all the showers. Include her in planning the guest list.

Avoid the temptation to overspend — on anything. If you are out and see an adorable pair of earrings, don’t buy eight sets for the bridesmaids, especially after you’ve already bought them a bracelet, a necklace and shoes. It’s just not necessary. The best way to keep from overspending is to make a list of things you want or need and stick to it.

This last bit of advice may seem a bit self-serving, but it’s important. Spend the money and hire a planner. I can’t tell you the number of moms who have several daughters who tell me they wished they had hired a planner for their first daughter’s wedding. A planner is your go-between for all of the vendors you’ve hired. Instead of making 14 calls, you make one to the planner and he handles most of the stress for you. He (okay, or she) has coordinated dozens and dozens of weddings and knows how to handle just about everything. And if he can’t, he can find someone who can. Most planners have “day of ” or “wedding weekend” packages that (for a very reasonable amount) literally let you, the mother, be in two places at one time. And the one place you really need to be is by your bride’s side, not at the venue worrying whether things are getting done. Do yourself a favor, hire the right people and the day will be a breeze. And in the end, if you are having fun, your guests will, too — even if there is a wedding issue!

Don’t be afraid to choose what you love

Here are five quick tips to help you set up your wedding registry.

When picking patterns, check out what you might be inheriting and try to complement something of a grandmother or mother.

Don’t be afraid of color. If you instantly love a pattern, chances are you’ll still love it down the road. It’s unfortunate for a bride to choose a plain pattern only because she thinks plain equals safe. If you love an intricate pattern, now you’ll still love it at 80.

If you choose a china pattern with lots of design, don’t be afraid of crystal with lots of cut. The crystal will hold its own with the plate, and they will complement one another. Don’t feel like two strong patterns are two much. They’ll look great together.

Do not — repeat DO NOT — think that you need gold flatware with a gold china pattern. You only need sterling flatware with fine china. If you don’t want to go the sterling route, stainless is fine, but you don’t need gold on your flatware to go with gold on your plate.

Have fun! People want to give you what you want as a wedding gift. This is the only time in your life you can list things you want and not look greedy. Think outside the box. You might think something seems a little pricey, but a group of friends could go in together and buy it for you. Now is the time to be truthful about what you want. • Get birth certificates if necessary. • Complete name change forms for your driver’s license, social security, banks and credit card companies. • Purchase wedding rings. • Order wedding bouquets and other floral decorations. • Order wedding cake. • Select thank-you gifts for your wedding party and ushers. • Finalize your guest list.

1 to 2 months before the wedding

• Get marriage license. • Mail wedding invitations. • Have final fittings for you and wedding party. • Schedule a consultation with your hairstylist and makeup artist.

1 week before the wedding

• Pack for your honeymoon. • Make a final checklist of items you need for your wedding ceremony and wedding reception. • Make final confirmations with florist, photographer and musicians.

1 day before the wedding

• Pack an emergency kit for your wedding day including, makeup, tissues, hairbrush, hairspray, personal items, extra pantyhose, aspirin, safety pins, sewing kit, etc. • If possible, have a massage or spend some time at a day spa. • Go to sleep early so you rise refreshed for your wedding day.

Just saying … ‘Cheap cake ain’t good; good cake ain’t cheap!’ If you have a sweet tooth and an appreciation for creative confectionary, selecting your wedding cake is likely to be one of your favorite parts of wedding planning. Sampling cake flavors and choosing from a rainbow of frosting colors make working with a cake designer a truly delicious task. However, it can be a tricky job. There’s a whole host of things to consider, including the design, the flavor(s), portion size, and of course, your wedding budget. Just to get the cake vision rolling, Google wedding themes or keywords to get an idea of what you may want — traditional, simply elegant, modern, whimsical, intricate? Pinterest is a great place to start, but it’s best to let a professional cake designer bring your idea to life. And since no one wants a Pintrosity on that special day, it’s important to remember this golden rule: “Cheap cake ain’t good; good cake ain’t cheap!”

the Cake Top-tier tips to follow Begin your search for a cake designer about three to six months before the wedding — even sooner if you want an in-demand pro. Some bakers’ schedules start filling up about a year in advance. Ask recently married friends and family members for their recommendations. Many caterers, reception sites, photographers and florists have favorite bakers, too. In your initial meeting, look through a portfolio of the cake designer’s work, and double-check that the details you know you want — say, intricate sugar flowers — are part of his or her body of work. If not, does he show versatility and an experimental spirit? Does she have the resources and background to do what you want? Some small bakeries may not have the manpower or know-how to create the grand, geometrical structures in which others specialize. Arrange for a cake tasting before the cake is ordered. If the cake has multiple flavors, taste all of them. Basic flavors like chocolate, strawberry and vanilla will vary depending on how the cake is made, its formulation, its frosting, and more. Don’t assume; taste! Avoid the cardinal sin of planning a last-minute custom wedding cake: Don’t wait until the last minute to design and order a cake. Most bakeries have their custom cakes calendared out weeks in advance. Special ingredients and decorations sometimes need to be ordered, and in some cases, created from scratch, which takes considerable experimentation. Be fearless about bright or seasonal colors, as well as cake embellishments such as stones, crystals, pearls, fruits, lace, and embroidery — all made of sugar. Also, be creative with unique ways to top off your cake. If you have an heirloom piece, especially a fine porcelain antique, work with your baker to integrate it into an appropriate design. Other alternatives: a bouquet of sugar flowers, a cascade of icing ribbons, or even a sugar block carved out to reveal your new monogram. Buttercream or fondant? That’s the main question. Buttercream is often much more delicious, but if you love the smooth, almost surreal-like look of fondant, consider frosting the cake in buttercream first and then adding a layer of fondant over the entire confection. Avoid freezer burn after the wedding! Even if you take the most painstaking packaging measures, eating the top tier of your cake on your first anniversary sounds far better than it tastes. Think about indulging on your two-week or one-month anniversary, and treat yourself to a fresh cake in the same flavor when you’ve survived the first year. If you must adhere to tradition, wrap the cake in plastic wrap and then place it in an airtight baggie. Stay away from aluminum foil — it might not protect against freezer burn — and plastic wrap, which is not an airtight material.

The woodland chic bride

Taking hints from nature, this bride is a natural beauty. To achieve this look, keep it simple with glowing skin, a softened brown liner, and groomed eyebrows. Pair with a petal-stained lip color such as E.L.F. cosmetics lip stain in pink petal, or pale petal creamy lip color from Bobbi Brown. A favorite pairing with this makeup look is a unkempt-chic ponytail with floral accents.

Retro sophistication

This look is trendy but also never goes out of style. This chic look is all about the winged/cat eye liner. Pair it with a neutral lip to avoid going overtly retro-themed. Which length hair do you like? Which color do you want? What is the condition of your hair? Do you need to consult with a professional stylist to reach your wedding-day goals? A professional can guide the bride-to-be through these decisions, ensuring she chooses the best style for her big day. Here are some quick tips and considerations.

Length

Most brides prefer longer hair. The longer the hair, the more creative the stylist/designer can be with formal bridal hair designs. Extensions are a great way to add not only length but also fullness, volume and color choices. Make sure your stylist is trained and are very knowledgeable in extension applications.

Color

A spring/summer bride may want some highlights to brighten up her look. If you will need a color correction, begin as soon as possible. This process may require a couple of visits to the salon in order to achieve your desired result, while maintaining healthy hair with no damage.

Stress

Planning a wedding can be very stressful and can wreak havoc within your body. The effects can show up in your hair. To help combat the stress, you may need to consider dietary changes that can be helpful, such as vitamin therapy and drinking plenty of water. Getting enough sleep is also very important. Eight hours of sleep a night helps to restore and heal a body under stress. A body under stress equals hair under stress. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day is very important for healthy, hydrated hair. Hydrated hair reduces spilt ends and prepares the hair for the different hairstyles she will wear for bridal showers and other wedding related events.

You also need regular hair trimmings to ensure your hair will be in the healthiest condition for your wedding day. Regular trims should be scheduled every six to eight weeks. This prevents split ends.

By Steve Linhoss Wedding photography is a big investment, so you want to be sure you hire someone who can meet your needs. Of course, you like their photographic style and the images on their website, or you wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be having this conversation. But, what else do you need to know to protect your investment? Here are a few questions you might want to ask a photographer before you agree to a contract:

Do you have all required permits and licenses? A true professional will be a legitimate businessperson. Do you carry liability insurance? What if you accidentally cause property damage or injury to a wedding guest?

How long have you been a professional photographer, and how many weddings have you photographed? There is no substitute for experience.

Tips for floral success

You probably will purchase more flowers from your florist for your wedding than for any other occasion in your life. Therefore, choosing flowers that fit your style and petals that match your color palette means finding the right bloom guru. You need someone special to create an unforgettable day that’s kissed by nature’s finest. Most brides-to-be are faced with questions such as how to find a florist they can trust, how to choose the most beautiful wedding flower bouquet, what colors/shapes work best with the dress, how big should the bouquet be, which flowers are available at that time of year, and much more. From dramatic and bold to romantic and understated, the vision you have for your wedding needs to be reflected in your wedding flowers, and floral designers help with just that! Besides your bridal bouquet, traditionally you’ll need — at a minimum — bouquets for your attendants, boutonnieres for your groom, groomsmen and fathers; corsages for your mothers and grandmothers; flowers to decorate the ceremony site; and centerpieces for the reception tables.

To make sure all of these blooms are beautiful and within your budget, picking the right florist is crucial. Here are some tips for floral success:  To select a wedding florist, begin by asking for recommendations from recently married family and friends, and from wedding professionals. Your contacts at both ceremony and reception sites probably have florists they’ve worked with repeatedly and can recommend. This is helpful because it means the florist is already familiar with the site, but be sure to follow up with your own research and reference checks.

 Once you select your initial florist candidates, make an appointment to view each one’s work. First, look at any arrangements on display in their shop or special event sites to see if you like the colors and combinations, and if the blossoms on hand look healthy and fresh. Take a careful look at the florist’s portfolio of other wedding work, and be sure to study both bouquets and table arrangements. If you like what you see, it’s time to talk about your needs.

 Choosing highly aromatic flowers for centerpieces may sound like an amazingly romantic idea, but it will drive your guests insane if they are prone to allergies. For highly aromatic arrangements, stick to your bridal bouquet and the altar arrangements.

 Think in advance about your flower budget and let your florist know this up front. To make sure he or she understands the look you’re after, clip pictures of any floral arrangements you like from magazines, be it sparse birch branches for a winter wedding or a bunch of colorful tulips. Showing examples of the style you prefer will help work up designs — and realistic estimates.  Classic/traditional, black tie affair, modern, theme event, beach wedding? The right florist will give your wedding the right flair, but the biggest mistake is for a bride to have her heart set on specific flowers and not be flexible. A florist can do a much better job if the bride asks for an

 Avoid using one color. Many brides try to match the flowers to the bridesmaid dresses, but a lavender gown with lavender flowers will make for very disappointing pictures. Flowers are a great place to choose an accent color. For example, a lime green against a lavender gown will bring out the best in both colors and make for fabulous photos.

 Some flowers just aren’t available at certain times of the year (or are very expensive) so make sure you take this into consideration when choosing which flowers to incorporate into your bouquet. Using flowers that are in season or regionally grown will cost far less than the flown-in, hothouse varieties. Keep in mind the holidays also affect prices. Around Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, general demand for flowers increase, as do their costs.  Make it personal and try to incorporate flowers that might have a personal meaning to either you or another family member. If you have a family heirloom such as an antique brooch, a lace hanky or something else to work into your something old, new, borrowed and blue, ask your florist to incorporate it into the bouquet.

Ride in style! The search for wedding-day transportation needs to start once you decide how many people you’ll be moving. Do you want just the bride and the groom in a vehicle, or is the entire wedding party heading to the reception together? If the whole party is going, do you want to include their spouses or dates? What about the couple’s parents and new inlaws? Once you make those decisions, you can start searching around for transport based on size and style. If the traditional limo is your style, your wedding is the day to splurge on this iconic luxury vehicle. Unlike some other forms of transport, a limo can be booked for an entire day, so you could get a high-class ride to pick you up at the house, deliver you to the ceremony, reception or even to the airport to jet away on a honeymoon. Most companies have a one- or two-hour minimum for their services, so think about what the most cost-effective way would be to keep the limo around. If you want a car for both going to and leaving the ceremony, it might be more affordable to hire two separate cars rather than pay for the vehicle to sit there during a long reception. A formal limousine seats four people, and sometimes a bride and groom will travel to the ceremony alone. Or, if you’d like to include the wedding party, stretch limos can allow for six to 10. To transport guests, passenger and luxury coach companies also are available, and the size and type of coach will determine the rate. Keep in mind, there are quite a few options for wedding-day transportation so don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Get creative and match your ride to your taste. Whether you want a unique getaway to express your style, or a fun way to give your bridal party and guests a lift, there are lots of options for your wedding wheels. Some ideas to get you started: A sleek silver Rolls-Royce works for a modern loft wedding; a pimped-out party bus goes perfectly with a hip hotel affair; and a bicycle built for two makes sense at a charming vintage celebration.

 Ask for sample menus and ask what type(s) of food the caterer specializes in.  Ask if an opportunity can be arranged to taste samples of the food prior to a final decision.  Ask what the caterer’s average prices are and request an itemization. Does the price include linens, silverware, taxes and gratuity?  Ask if the caterer will book other weddings for the same weekend or at the same time as your wedding. You want to be sure sufficient time and attention is given to your reception.  Ask if the caterer will provide wait staff and the size of the team? Will the caterer’s team will place favors and place cards? Be sure you are comfortable with the number of waiters and what they will wear.  Ask if the caterer will be able to handle special food requests, i.e. for vegetarian guests.  Ask if the food will be provided on-site if facilities are available. If not, is there an additional fee for equipment?  Ask whether the caterer is licensed and insured.

FRAME YOUR LOVE STORY Fallon Ramage Josep shares a frameable moment of how her beau surprised her: “Three years into my relationship with my now husband, he proposed to me in the most thoughtful way. I arrived home from work on a normal day to find him at my house waiting on me. He handed me a shoe box, and the contents blew me away. He had kept all these items from the three years of our relationship. There were movie tickets, charity event tickets,

paper menus from restaurants, etc. At the bottom of the box, I found the ticket stub from our first date. Attached to it was a fortune cookie that read, “The love of your life is in front of you.” He told me he got that the week we met. Also, attached to the back of the ticket was an engagement ring. I said, “Yes!!!” Knowing I had this box of precious memories, I wanted to do something with it. I turn to Negrotto’s Gallery to help make something special. They were able to display all the items in the box and frame it so I could keep the memories on the wall for everyone to see. I decided to surprise my husband with this frame at our rehearsal dinner. Negrotto’s took a shoe box of memories and turned into a masterpiece.”

he day you have dreamed of for so long is fast approaching. Sometimes while planning every detail so that our day is perfect we fail to plan for our real life: Combining two households into one. Include this advice on insurance while you’re planning. The number of insurance companies is almost as endless as the ways companies market themselves in an effort to win your business. You can call an 800 number and buy over the phone, go online and do your best to answer all the questions and pick the right coverage amounts on your own. Other people choose to call around and see which insurance agent will quote the cheapest price. All of these options have one thing in common: The cheapest price. While price should be a consideration, it should not be the sole consideration. Have you ever heard the old saying, “You get what you pay for”? This is true of insurance, too. If you chose to purchase insurance online or via an 800 number, keep in mind that should you have a claim, your only point of contact if things don’t go the way you think they should is the 800 number or the website. If you purchase your insurance from a local agent, you probably will still be asked to call an 800 number to report your claim, but you also can stop by their office for a face-to-face conversation to get assistance with a claim or coverage questions.

AUTO Now, let’s talk about your automobile insurance. Are you still insured on your parent’s policy? If so, now is the time to obtain your own policy. If not, then review your polices and coverage and put all of your vehicles on one policy. Once you’re married, your will qualify for a marriage discount, and there are also discounts for having good credit, continuous insurance, having more than just minimum insurance, multivehicle, home ownership, being a safe driver and others.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED Before you begin your search for an agent to insure your vehicles, be sure to have the following items handy: 1. If you are currently insured on your parent’s policy, you will need a copy of their automobile policy declaration page listing you as a named driver and your automobile. Make sure it also shows the effective dates of the policy as well as the policy limits or coverage amounts for your vehicle. 2. The VIN, vehicle identification number, for your vehicles. 3. Are you making payments on your vehicle? If so, have all the information on who the lienholder is and what their mailing address for insurance purposes. 4. Do you have items such as an ATV, boat or camper you need to insure? If a company insures your vehicle as well as other items, you may qualify for a multi-policy discount. 5. Keep the adage “you get what you pay for” in mind and don’t buy on price alone. Ask your agent to explain what your money is buying. Insurance coverage is a major purchase and your coverage only extends to the options you purchase. Be informed; find out before you buy what will and will not be covered if you have an accident or loss.

HOME Where will you live? Do you plan to rent? Often people who chose to rent don’t think they need insurance. Here are a couple reasons why that is a bad assumption. First, your landlord is not responsible for your personal belongings. If the home or apartment you rent burns down, is destroyed

by a tornado, hurricane or flood and your possessions are also destroyed or damaged, you absorb the loss. Did you know that your landlord is also not responsible is someone is injured in your home. What if your friend drops by and she trips on your rug, falls, breaks her leg and can’t work for a month or two? Who is going to pay their bills? Can you afford to? Are you planning to purchase a home of your own? Keep the following things in mind as you shop, they can make a big difference in the cost of your insurance. 1. When was the home built? 2. If it is older, is it in good shape? Has it been remodeled? If so, what was done, when and by whom? Were the repairs done by a licensed contractor? 3. Is the home brick, vinyl or a fortified home? 4. If the home certified by IBHS as bronze, silver or gold construction? 5. Is the home inside or outside the city limits? 6. Does it have a hip, gable or metal roof? 7. Is your credit good or just good enough to get the house?

FINANCIAL PLANNING What about your financial future? Have you met with a local financial advisor to help you put a plan in place that will be of benefit to you when you are older? Many young people think they are too young to begin to plan for retirement. That is not true. The sooner you begin the more income you will be likely to have to live on during retirement.
