It is really tough to pick just one thing to be the most valuable. I would have to say that the networking opportunities provide a lot of value, but then I have to highlight the sessions. I always come to learn something, and I always leave with ideas to make improvements to our Microsoft Dynamics GP install and processes.

Every implementation is diﬀerent, and the things that they do with the same system as we all use is interesting. GPUG: What does it mean to you to be an All Star? Aaron Back (AB): Being an All Star is a great honor. Being elected by your peers means that you have contributed to the community in such a way that you have made a real impact. Being an All Star is also a personal challenge to strive to keep going and achieve and contribute more. Belinda Allen (BA): This means more to me than any other award I’ve received before, because this came from Users. I’m so honored and ﬂattered that (to quote Sally Fields) they like me! Shawn Dorward (SD): Being recognized as a GPUG All Star is a reminder to me that I am part of a team and not just an individual. The GPUG community is that team, and I am honored to be recognized by my teammates. I take the recognition very seriously; it’s a motivator to me. I intend to continue to earn our community’s respect, and I hope to serve even more! GPUG: What’s the greatest reward in sharing your knowledge and expertise with fellow GPUG Members? AB: The greatest reward I have is knowing I have helped someone. They may have had a challenge, or didn’t understand something, or just didn’t know where to look for an answer. Seeing the light bulb go oﬀ in someone’s mind is a rewarding experience. It’s that aha moment for them, and I’m proud to contribute to that. I love seeing people take information I have provided and run with it, taking it further than I would have imagined. BA: I love learning and hanging out with others who love learning. Every time I share with fellow Members, I always feel like I’m learning more than they are. SD: Quite honestly, it is very rewarding to know that I might help make someone’s day be just a bit easier…or point them in the right direction so they can go home on time for the day. That’s pretty cool right there! It happens to me as well: I get a lot of help from the community, and I just enjoy returning the favor. GPUG: Who is your inspiration in the Microsoft Dynamics GP community? AB: To be honest, my inspiration is my fellow recipient, Belinda Allen. She makes the atmosphere fun and exciting when she presents, and she is a wealth of knowledge. And, on a personal level, she is passionate about her hobbies and enjoyable to chat with. BA: There are many – Leslie Vail, Béat Bucher, Kim Peterson, and others – but Mark Polino hits the number one spot. We’ve become good friends, and we share the same passion for learning and making

Users’ lives easier. Do not tell him this, but I think of him as a mentor! He even teases me by calling me his clone, telling me that I need to ﬁnd my own clone now. SD: There are just so many super-talented folks I could mention that I hesitate to pick just one. GPUG: What’s next for you as an All Star? AB: What’s next for me is diving back into my role at Gorilla Glue, with the many projects we have slated for 2015, as well as seeing how I can contribute more to the GPUG community in 2015. BA: I want to help take all Microsoft Dynamics GP Users (and Partners) on a business intelligence journey that will make them and their companies more successful. That’s actually my company’s mission statement: “To improve the lives and business success of our customers.” We stole this mission statement from Great Plains (before it was acquired by Microsoft) many years ago, but we still strive to achieve this every day. SD: I am considering writing a book – no, not some hot romance novel – an SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) book (close, though!) GPUG

Get to Know the Designers of Microsoft Dynamics GP

2015

We know that it takes a village to do just about anything in life, and we thought you might enjoy meeting a few of the key designers/developers on Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015. Here they are! Katie Traynor | senior solutions consultant lead Microsoft Dynamics GP tenure: 17 years Focus for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015: I worked on additional Workflow functionality, primarily on the General Ledger Batch Workflow, and I served as the project lead for adding invoicing to the Web Client and the Management Reporter enhancement. More about what I do: I also manage Fixed Assets testing for feature enhancements, bug fixes, and any applicable tax changes, as well as maintain the Receivables Management module automated tests and assist in other areas as necessary. A little about our team: Our team has a variety of roles that are instrumental in the product development life cycle. We get involved with the release right from the start with the feature requirements. When reviewing the requirements, we are always taking into consideration the Customers’ viewpoint. We then write testing documents to ensure appropriate coverage such as test plans, test designs, and test cases. The majority of our tests are automated, which ensures that we maintain high quality standards with each release on new and existing functionality. We also work with the support organization to ensure that bugs are fixed within each product release. On the solution consultant team, each individual has areas of ownership for test coverage and product quality. We also maintain all the automated tests for these areas to ensure that we don’t introduce additional problems while fixing bugs or implementing new features. All of our tasks are completed with Customers in mind to ensure they are getting the highest-quality product with the features they expect. 14 | GPUG Magazine

Marge Swanson | senior software engineer Microsoft Dynamics GP tenure: 19 years (22 total with Microsoft) Focus for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015: I worked on the Service Based Architecture, which enables Microsoft Dynamics GP to expose and consume services. I was also involved in reviewing feature requirements and implementation design for the Allow Edit for Email Address of Historical SOP Documents feature, which gives the User the ability to correct the email address prior to emailing a document a second time in case the original contact has changed; the Never Forget to Match that Purchase Order Again feature will remind a User if a purchase order has already been billed; and the Payment Terms Due Date calculations feature, which expands the payment terms functionality that is used throughout all the modules. More about what I do: I have been working on the new Service-based Architecture. I am creating new service endpoints within sanScript that companion applications will be able to connect to and ultimately invoke existing and refactored Microsoft Dynamics code to create, read, update, and delete card and transaction data from within Microsoft Dynamics GP. This feature will give ISV applications the ability to call operations from outside of the Dexterity environment, making their development for add-ins far easier than in the past. In addition, I have software engineering ownership of the Sales Order Processing, Purchase Order Processing, Purchase Order Enhancements, Copier Series, and Payables modules. Along with any new feature enhancements for each release, I am responsible for any sustained engineering that is included for those modules. I enjoy the work that I do and the challenges encountered when we move into new areas. Implementing new features is the favorite part of my work as I get the opportunity to give our Customers functionality that will make their jobs more eﬃcient.

Workflow Email Action service), which will now be able to authenticate and delegate tasks against Organizational Accounts. Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 adds a Service Based Architecture feature that enables exposing Microsoft Dynamics GP as a service. Once hosted and deployed, administrators need a way to manage those services such as host configurations, starting and stopping services, killing processes, etc. We added a snap-in in our Web Management Console to manage those tasks for Microsoft Dynamics GP Services. I was involved in testing Microsoft Dynamics GP Services snap-in for Web Management Console. I really enjoy the great work I do here at Microsoft on Microsoft Dynamics GP.

Zech Andersen | software engineer Microsoft Dynamics GP tenure: 1 year Focus for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015: Identity Management, bringing a single sign-on experience to the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client so that Users do not have to deal with additional credential prompts More about what I do: I have been very excited about Microsoft Dynamics GP and the features that I’ve been working on since becoming a software engineer. In our last release, I helped make this possible by incorporating authentication cookies in our website. With Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015, we’ve taken it a step further by allowing single sign-on with not only Windows accounts, but also with Microsoft Organizational Accounts. This means that a User who is signed in to Office 365 can simply open up a new web browser tab and go straight to Microsoft Dynamics GP without ever entering credentials. My first role in this was to help during the research phase to figure out exactly what we could and could not do as well as to learn all about Microsoft Azure and how to use it for authentication. After that, it was my job to implement organizational account authentication on our website and to let our other services such as Session Central Service and Tenant Services understand what an organizational account is. Another focus of mine for this release was the Soft-Restart feature. This is another Web Client feature that lets Users get out of a faulted state so that they can continue their work right where they left off. A User can get to a faulted state if he/she loses connection to the runtime service – even momentarily – which could be caused by several different factors. In the past, it was necessary to completely close the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client and then re-launch it (possibly requiring authentication). Now, there is a “restart” button on the error window that the User can click to recover his/her session on the spot. It has been very rewarding so far to work on the Microsoft Dynamics GP team. Being a part of these releases has been very challenging and enjoyable. With the latest Identity Management features, I’ve been able to work on the cutting edge and learn so much about the direction of User authentication and single sign-on.

Reporting Tools: An SSRS Point of View by Shawn Dorward

Which Way do I go, George? With so many reporting tools available for Microsoft Dynamics GP, the questions most often become which tool do I use, when do I use it, and WHY? Well, I’ll assume a good many of you already have explored deﬁning purposes and reasons for each of the available tools, but I think one point remains constant: What works well for one individual or one company may not work well for others. So, since no one tool really can answer every company’s unique reporting needs, we have a plethora of options at our digital ﬁngertips. However, knowing why we have so many options available is only a tiny part of the puzzle, and it doesn’t help guide you to one solution in particular. Each one is an investment, and you can’t keep feeling like you are bouncing between each one. You want an answer…you want the truth!

You Want the Truth? You Can’t Handle the Truth! The truth is that reporting is the most important part of data tracking (okay, we can debate that later), and while we come up with super-creative and unique ways to track and key and program and blah, blah, blah, we all seem to want an out-of-the-box solution to meet the reporting needs of our organization. It’s just not going to happen! As technology advances, so do our options, but at the end of the day, no third party is going to answer your CFO’s questions completely. Not to mention that picking a tool means a commitment (not just of time and money) that you are uncomfortable making because you don’t know how long this solution will work for you. As such, the decision lingers, and in the meantime, you’re still lost. So how DO we meet the needs of the organization if we can’t choose one tool to do it all for us? Think BIGGER, and start leveraging two of the most powerful resources at your disposal: SSRS and YOU!

Time to Kick the Tires With a SQL Server infrastructure, you are all but guaranteed to have Sequel Server Reporting Services (SSRS; check out Kim Peterson’s acronym cheat sheet on Collaborate if you haven’t already). SSRS is FREE and comes standard with more recent versions of SQL Server. SSRS can be leveraged so many ways, but most often it’s looked at as simply a reporting tool. Since SSRS stands for Sequel Server Reporting Services, referring to it as a SERVICE deﬁnitely makes more sense to me.

Why call it a service and not a tool? Well, it’s probably more of a reporting platform, but oh well; I still consider it a service because it helps me use my tools more eﬃciently. Speaking of tools, you wanted to know which one you should use, right? The good news is you DO NOT have to choose one tool in particular. After you start using SSRS, the decision will make itself, and you can still use other reporting tools if you need to until you are comfortable taking the leap. SSRS is like a good mechanic: The more things the shop can do for you at once, the better. But unlike most mechanics, SSRS is FREE! Even though you will likely still need Management Reporter (let’s not reinvent the wheel), you can consider SSRS a one-stop shop for your reporting needs.

Set a Course (or Take One!) Learning how to utilize tools that connect to the reporting service is a lot easier than it may initially seem. Don’t be scared! It’s good for your company, your career, and it’s fun. (Okay, I’m not sure if it’s fun for everyone, but it is for me!) There are several tools you can use to design and publish reports to the reporting service, including Visual Studios, Report Builder, and more. But at the end of the day, the overall concept is the same, and the most important piece is understanding how to get the correct data you need. You’ll need to be patient when transitioning to SSRS. It will take time and work, but it will be worth it! Find good training and a good “sandbox” to start practicing in. Personal development opportunities include online, in-class, peerto-peer, trial-and-error, and many more. They are all valuable in their own way.

Flexible SSRS reports are ﬂexible enough to meet all of your needs (well, almost all of them) and are limited only by your creativity and skill

set. It’s also easy to see an instant beneﬁt considering there are more than 200 reports available for Microsoft Dynamics GP right out of the box, without any customization. For example, you can take an existing SmartList, turn it into a simple SSRS report with many parameters, and publish it to Users. Big deal, right? Well, now you won’t have 500 diﬀerent “favorites” (I laugh every time I say that; NO ONE considers them their favorite) AND Users don’t need to have a Microsoft Dynamics GP login/ security/access/etc. Oh, and did I mention that it’s lightning-fast at exporting to Excel, even with 50,000 records, formatted exactly the same as your report? BAM!

Expandable Have you ever wanted to combine data from a “non-Microsoft Dynamics GP” source with your financial data from Microsoft Dynamics GP? SSRS is not restricted to Microsoft Dynamics GP, so neither are you. You can expand your reports to include the data from another source without putting it into Microsoft Dynamics GP.

your department? How many reports do you print, then collate, then staple, then stuff in an envelope and mail interoffice? How many payroll reports do you distribute to managers every pay week? Stop doing the work and automate! Build the reports in SSRS, and set a schedule to send them off to the appropriate folks at the appropriate time. Or if you’d like, send them the link, and they can retrieve the report on demand. No more report collating. Think about the savings there – mail room, paper, time, effort…yowza!

Versatile Once your report is built, Users can manage their needs a little more independently by: Drilling down to more detailed data by double-clicking on a chart or line item, using drill through to Microsoft Dynamics GP (click a transaction, and it takes you to Microsoft Dynamics to see the details – yup, I did just say that, and it’s TRUE!), seeing real-time data by refreshing, and using parameters rather than diﬀerent reports. Want to save more time? Have you ever run a SmartList just to export it to Excel and update the data on a tab because other tabs rely on that data? With SSRS, Users can automatically generate a ﬁle on a schedule (more on that below), so linked reports are automatically updated!

Reliable Automating report distribution has to be one of the coolest beneﬁts of SSRS. How many reports do you email around to members of

reports where folks can only see certain data. Instead of creating multiple reports, just schedule the report to be sent automatically to the recipient, and populate the parameter so that only his/her information is received.

Show Off Your Intelligence! Reporting sounds bland, but business intelligence (BI) sounds powerful. Well, that’s not too far off! Using SSRS is very similar to using a BI tool. Take your reports and throw in the ability to “see” the data using charts, maps, or sparklines, and NOW you have something intelligent! Interested in adding several charts to one screen (dashboard) and being able to instantly see key metrics for your organization or team? It certainly sounds easier than analyzing those row and column reports like you do now, right? So, what are you waiting for? The opportunities are endless!

Final Thoughts SSRS is an investment that will pay off dramatically for the User, the department, and the company. “Investment”? You said it was free, Shawn. It is…chillax! The investment is the work and patience to build and deploy the reports. The investment is spending time on GPUG Collaborate, in the classroom, on a conference call during a webinar, or at Convergence or GPUG Summit. If you put the work in, it will surely pay you back by saving time, providing better decision-making tools, and impacting your bottom line because of the money you’re saving. One Fictional Crime Scene at a Time

aking society a safer place is the mission at Ultra Electronics Forensic Technology (Forensic Technology), and the company achieves this by creating automated solutions for ballistic identiﬁcation, which helps police solve crimes quickly and has even helped solve crimes from more than 20 years ago. In addition to making this positive impact on society with its solutions, Forensic Technology employees created and implemented a social responsibility model linked to the company’s mission. From this initiative, “CSI for a Day” was born!

CSI for a Day Based oﬀ the popular TV shows, Forensic Technology employees designed a fun, science-based, problem-solving, CSI-type game in which high school students compete to resolve a ﬁctitious murder. Béat Bucher, business analyst and Microsoft Dynamics platform administrator at Forensic Technology, says, “Students are so engaged from the beginning. They’re immediately excited to get out of their traditional classroom environment and learn in a whole new way.” Targeting high schools with drop-out rates of 50 percent or higher, Forensic Technology’s employees walk students through the learning and problem-solving processes to demonstrate that learning can be fun, which encourages students to stay in school. The winning team even receives individual book scholarships for their college studies, giving students yet another reason to consider continuing their education.

An Impactful Experience for All Forensic Technology has been holding CSI for a Day since 2008, impacting more than 400 students in the Quebec and Florida areas. There is never a shortage of employee volunteers, and Béat is one that participates year after year. “It’s so rewarding to see the leaders that emerge in a learning structure like this. It also gives kids the opportunity to play out different roles, such as a lab scientist or police detective,” Béat says. “Science can do so many things, and I think CSI for a Day sets that stage for kids to believe they can pursue their interests by staying in school.” As a coach and fingerprint expert during the events, Béat thoroughly enjoys guiding students to find the killer in the fictional crime scene. “About 15 employees set things up, prepare, and run the day. We always have fun, and the schools can’t stress enough how much it raises the awareness of the teens to pursue a college degree,” Béat shares. One example of this fond appreciation is from Anthony Francois, assistant principal at Northeast High School in St. Petersburg, Florida: “It speaks very highly of Forensics Technology that you care so much about education that you open the doors of your company to students for these types of experiences. More than that, though, these are students who are classified as ‘at-risk’ by virtually all academic indicators. These are the students who research shows will fail, drop out of school, or try getting a GED within a year (at age 16) if we do not intervene. Your colleagues interacted with these students and treated them like respectable young adults, and I thank you for that.” Béat continues, “When we receive thank you letters like that , it’s such a great reminder that in addition to what we do on a daily basis, we’re making our society a better place. It makes me extremely proud to be part of the Forensic Technology team.” GPUG

GPUG: You and your team have been very involved with GPUG Summit, presenting on numerous occasions and spending lots of time with Users and Partners. What’s the greatest beneﬁt to Microsoft with your involvement? Pam Misialek (PM): Being part of GPUG Summit has a lot of great beneﬁts for Microsoft. The biggest one is hearing from our Customer base. GPUG Summit gives us the opportunity to understand how our Customers use Microsoft products and hear the challenges that they have. It helps us create a stronger product strategy for future releases. GPUG: What were some of the most common questions the R&D team heard at this year’s GPUG Summit about Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015? PM: “When.” Users wanted to know when the product will be released to the public. GPUG: When will that be? PM: We are targeting a December release, so by the time you read this issue in December or early January, Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 will be available. GPUG: In which features were Users most interested?

PM: The new workﬂow, which is not SharePoint dependent and is much easier to implement and customize. Identity Management was another big one, which makes working in the cloud much easier. Purchase Requisitions inside of Microsoft Dynamics GP were pretty popular as they make it easier to take requisitions and move them to Purchase Orders with the new buyer experience. Employee Time and Expense and the Time Management app were also hits. GPUG: What types of questions did the support team hear most? PM: The most popular questions were around the retirement of Business Portal. GPUG: Can you share a little bit more about that retirement plan? PM: Business Portal will not ship on Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015, but not for a bad reason. Starting in Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 and now with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015, we added functionality into the core of Microsoft Dynamics GP that mirrored the most popular functionality in Business Portal. A few pieces of Business Portal were not replicated or redesigned because they were not used very often.

PM: The upgrade itself should be a pretty straightforward process.Â We have the system requirements, which have a ton of great information on this release.Â The most important thing is to understand the new functionality so Users can take advantage of it after they upgrade.Â We will have several YouTube videos available with this information, and Users can read my blog posts on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Feature of the Dayâ&#x20AC;? on the Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog (see sidebar). We will be doing a webcast series with GPUG for Customers to get a more in-depth understanding of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015. This content will also be reformatted so the chapters can leverage this information for their meetings. GPUG: Nearly two decades later, what keeps you energized about your role? Connecting the Tables in Microsoft Dynamics GP (Table Joins): UPR00100 and UPR00102 by John Lowther hen joining the tables UPR00100 and UPR00102, you have to consider if you want the employee information and all of their addresses or only the current address displayed on the Employee Maintenance window (Employee Card). The most common query is to get just the address displayed on the employee card. To do that, use the ﬁelds EMPLOYID and ADRSCODE from each table to join them together. Example:

SELECT E.LASTNAME, E.FRSTNAME, A.ADRSCODE, A.ADDRESS1, A.ADDRESS2, A.CITY, A.STATE, A.ZIPCODE FROM UPR00100 AS E INNER JOIN UPR00102 as A on E.EMPLOYID = A.EMPLOYID and E.ADRSCODE = A.ADRSCODE WHERE E.EMPLOYID = ‘BARR0001’ This query will return only one record, the employee information and the address displayed on the Employee Card. However, if you leave oﬀ the “and E.ADRSCODE = A.ADRSCODE” portion of the inner join as shown here: SELECT E.LASTNAME, E.FRSTNAME, A.ADRSCODE, A.ADDRESS1, A.ADDRESS2, A.CITY, A.STATE, A.ZIPCODE FROM UPR00100 AS E INNER JOIN UPR00102 as A on E.EMPLOYID = A.EMPLOYID WHERE E.EMPLOYID = ‘BARR0001’ In the initial demo company, you will actually get two records, one for the primary address (ADRSCODE = ‘PRIMARY’), and one for the work address (ADRSCODE = “WORK”). Now while initially you may think you would never want to do that, what if you are actually creating a warehouse table and wanted both addresses in the same record in the warehouse table. Then you could do something like this: SELECT E.LASTNAME, E.FRSTNAME, PA.ADDRESS1 as PRIMARY_ADDRESS1,

(Note: This is what programmers call “Hard Coding” because the ADRSCODE is “hard coded” into the query.) » It was also necessary to rename the fields from PA.ADDRESS1 to PRIMARY_ADDRESS1 and WA.ADDRESS1 to WORK_ ADDRESS1, etc. so that in your warehouse table would not end up with two fields with the same name. This is something that SQL Server really does not like. » Moreover, you also must know in advance what the possible values for the ADRSCODE field can be. If someone enters a different value (for example, “PRIM”) then those records will never make it into your warehouse table. So, depending on your exact needs, you can now join the two tables either way you wish. GPUG Honors Inaugural Richard Whaley Academy Award Recipient

ich Beliveau, director of Academy, shared the stage with Betsy Whaley during GPUG® Summit’s closing session to present the inaugural Richard Whaley Academy Award to Bob McAdam of Dynamic Communities, Inc. Richard Whaley, a frequent instructor of GPUG Academy courses, was a valued member of the GPUG community and a GPUG All Star. Many in the Microsoft Dynamics GP community benefitted from his numerous presentations during courses, webinars, and past Summit conferences. He combined his passion for education with his love of Microsoft Dynamics to help all be better Microsoft Dynamics Users. “The Richard Whaley Academy Award was created as a way to honor Richard and carry on his legacy,” says Rich. “Through the years, Richard selflessly contributed countless hours of his time and talents. An award in his honor is a way for GPUG and the community to recognize others who have been influenced by his example.” Students participating in 2014 Academy courses and 2013 Summit Academy training classes were asked to submit their nominations and vote for the award recipient.

In the words of one of his nominators: “Bob is an exceptional instructor. I was lucky to have the opportunity to take two of his classes, and his professionalism was very impressive. He went above and beyond to help with my questions about the SmartList Builder and helped solve a problem I had at work. Bob is amazing, and he deserves to be the winner of the Richard Whaley Academy Award.” Bob is the vice president of ﬁnance for Dynamic Communities, Inc. He presents between 15 and 20 virtual Academy courses annually in addition to courses and sessions during Summit. He regularly contributes to the community via Bob’s BloGPipes (www.gpug.com/blogs/bob-mcadam) and is the co-founder of Dynamics Podcast (www.dynamicspodcast.com). “It’s been a pleasure to work with Bob over the past few years,” says Rich. “His contributions to the Microsoft Dynamics GP community speak to his dedication to our GPUG Members and to education.” “Being recognized by your peers is always great,” says Bob, “and having Richard’s name rightly placed on the award makes it that much better.”

A Note from Bob McAdam... At the eighth annual GPUGÂŽ Summit in St. Louis, Missouri, I received the inaugural Richard Whaley Academy Award for my involvement as an instructor with GPUG Academy.Â Richardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daughter Betsy presented me with the award, and it was quite a humbling moment for me as Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been helping build GPUG Academy since 2008 when I began teaching classroom events.Â As many already know, Richard passed away in July, but his legacy lives on, and thanks to Kim Peterson, GPUG program director, his name will always be associated with an annual award given to GPUG Academy instructors.Â Kim is the brain child behind the annual GPUG All Star Awards, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no surprise that she found a great way to honor Richard each and every year. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever taken a class of mine at GPUG Academy, you know that I always bring up or mention the Accolade Publications website (www. accoladepublications.com) and reference a speciďŹ c book that best supplements the material being presented.Â Many of my classes were compiled using Richardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books; I own several of them and have read most at least one time.Â The Accolade Publications library is diverse and has helped me craft my skillset a great deal.Â Without this resource, my ability to compile classroom curriculum would be much more diďŹ&#x192;cult. Thank you to everyone who cast their vote for me; receiving this award from my peers and students is just incredible.Â Richard set
