PROJECT BRIEF Project type : Pedestrian Bridge Theme : Landmark Duration : 2 Weeks Site : Klang River , Central Market Kuala Lumpur
land路mark /lan(d)m盲rk/ Noun 1 . An object or feature of a landscape or town that enables someone to establish their location. 2 . An event, discovery, or change marking an important stage or turning point in something.
Landmark suppose to be noticeable, memorable, iconic, and meaningful.
pedestrian bridge
Pedestrian bridges already used for hundreds of years. In the early ages, bridges only used to access other villages. As the years goes by, the functions of bridge are expanding. For examples in Kuala Lumpur, there are skybridge that connects the two towers of the Petronas Twin Towers and there is a sky bridge that allows people to walk in a safe, elevated, free from traffics, and air-conditioned environment from one place to another . In this modern time, this kind of structure needs to evolve in order to solve more problems other than connecting two places. Just like what Darwin said about human. As he quoted “ it is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, it is the most adaptable to change . The general function of a pedestrian bridge is to connect two places by providing a bridge for people to access a place from another. But bridge is more than that. Inspired by the words said by one of our senior , Fahmi , bridge can also be used to connect people, or to connect two culture. And he also said that instead of connect two places, why not put something in the middle and let people come to it . For me, bridges is more than meets the eye. According to what Prof. Makhtar said during his lecture last semester, he told us about the curry. What makes the curry delicious? The other ingredients that makes the aroma of the curry leaf outstanding, not the curry leaf itself. Based on that concept, we need to have more than just one ingredient to make the design go od. We need more than just allowing people to walk on the bridges, we have to provide more.

main issue
LACK OF APPRECIATION TOWARDS THE GRAFITTI ARTIST They carry a lot of to ols and equipments but the only proper access for them is miles away from the main “bombing” area. Because of that, they will do their work far away from the public area. Creating a gap between the artist and public. Why not make them bump into each other , thus reducing the gap between the two community.
SITE issue
CROSSING PROBLEM CAUSE TRAFFIC JAM Because of the popularity and the location of the site, people come pouring into the area. Either to go to work or to shop at Central Market. The main road which is Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and Jalan Tun Sambanthan, is being used as main crossing area. There is a traffic light that helps them to cross safely , and sometimes they didn’t even follow it. It is very dangerous and the traffic light causing traffic jam.
solution BRIDGE TO CROSS THE ROAD AND ACCESS TO THE RIVER
Provide safer route to cross the road and to go into the river. The public and the artist will use the same access thus increase the probability for them to bump into each other. It will also give a chance for the public to go near the artwork and maybe watch the artist doing their job.
taken on 9th of March
CONCEPT
Because of the diversity of form of art at Central Market area, i decided to go with concept derived from unbiased side, Neutral. The bridge maybe benefits to the graffiti artist more but the identity of the bridge will not side with graffiti. Instead the form of the bridge will not side with any form of art. The form will also be a humble and calmer form to avoid overshadowing the real attraction of the area. Because of the area is very dark at night, the bridge will highlight the area to attract people to come to the area at night. The bridge will also neutralise the gap between the society and the artist. It will be an invitation for people to go into the river and lo ok at the artwork more closely.

idea development Idea 01 A long bridge that floating above the Klang River. Provide very go od view of the artwork. But the critique is “It is not a bridge, it is a walkway”. For me it is a go od idea, but it just does not suit the project brief.
Idea 02 A moving bridge that will change it’s location using sort of a train track depending which area need it the most. The challenge is that the maintanence and control is very difficult and costly.
Idea 03 A detachable bridge. Can be setup whenever there’s a base. Same concept as the moving bridge but this time it will be disassemble and install at other place. Also very difficult to control and maintain.
Final Idea A normal bridge that will provide access into the river and crossing route for pedestrian. It can be the starting module for Idea 01 - The long Bridge.
form development Round shape provide an ergonomic width for the walkway and also did not obstruct the view but it does not provide a go od shade from the sun and rain
Round shape with more enclosure provide shade but not the view.
Bigger round shape provide more comfortable walkway but obstruct the vehicular circulation
Stretched sideway round shape provide wider walkway and efficient shading but the area near the railing still exposed to sun
Provide view and sufficient shading to the users without obstruction to the vehicular circulation underneath.

PROJECT BRIEF Title : MNS Environmental Education Centre Theme : MNS Programme Client : Malaysian Nature Society Duration : 12 Weeks Floor area : 1200 msq Site : FRIM, Kepong Definition : EE Centers are facilities that provide quality environmental education for the public, including outdoor experiences, exhibits and programs.
environmental issue in malaysia
“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.” Mahatma Gandhi
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTRE
Environment. Is one of the most inmportant things in the world. If it’s not important, why does people working so hard to preserve and conserve it. Without the environment, we are nothing, we cannot live in this world without the nature. Even the source of our oxygen is coming from trees. If there is no tree, it means that there will be no us. No human. Environment is also important in teaching us, the human about life, about surviving, about adapting to changes. If there is no birds, how can the Wrights Brothers know how to invent an airplane. The environment and nature inspire us in many ways. In life, our lifestyle, even our design. In this scho ol of architecture, every students must go through a semester where the theme is Nature. We learned about biomimicry, learn the features, the specialty, the characteristic of nature, in detail. The environment must be preserve and conserve for the future generation, what we have now, its not for us, its for the future. That is why there is environmental law firms, nature club, and many other NGO that fighting to preserve the environment. Malaysian Nature Society is one of the Malaysian NGO that is fighting to save the nature. They have created many programmes and event relating to nature conservation. From recycling to mangrove conservation. They have covered many range of nature conservation. It is great that Malaysia have its own NGO that willing to sacrfice their lifetime in conserving the environment. As for this semester final project, we were given a task in designing the new Environmental Education Center (EEC). EEC provides facilities, programs, and education for public. Whether through an exhibition or seminars, or even outdo or arctivities. The EEC will be the MNS branch office, where they will handle the their programs.

site info
Located 16 km north west of Kuala Lumpur, the 544.3 ha campus is surrounded by the Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve. FRIM, which recently was awarded the MS ISO 9001:2008 accreditation is headed by its Director General, Dato’ Dr. Abd. Latif Mohmod. Among the facilities available at FRIM are the five arboreta that serve as ex-situ conservation areas and references for forestry education, a xylarium with more than 10,000 wo od samples of over 1,500 species, a herbarium established in 1908 with over 200,000 specimens, a library, a nursery, several venues for seminars and conferences. FRIM, which has become a popular spot for picnickers, joggers and nature groups provides visitors, opportunities for outdo or recreation and nature education activities. It is also a preferred place for family day event, bird watching, jungle trekking and nature photography. The campus, which was once a degraded land with and long-abandoned sterile mining po ols, scrubby wasteland and barren vegetable farms, is today a haven for nature lovers to enjoy fresh and for serene ambiance.

WATER VISION program related to water conservation. Every year there is a competition related to the program for scho ol students. the programs increase awareness towards the usage of water and how to conserve it.
PROBLEM STATEMENT MNS goal is to expand the society through EEC and KPA, but the existing EEC at FRIM does not comply with the society’ s goal. the building cannot support the activities provided. the public also does not have a place to refer or enquire information about the MNS , KPA or any other programs in frim. there’s no proper education centre to cater all the needs from the MNS , KPA and public. KPA also does not have a proper meeting place for their members to come and gather . The EEC will be the main hub of all KPA members. This is the place where they have a meeting or gathering.
ISSUES
THE EXISTING INSUFFIECIENT NON-PROFIT EEC DOES NOT FACILITIES TO SOCIETY, HAVE TO CATER ALL ACTIVI- GENERATE THEIR SHOW GOOD IMAGE TO THE PUBLIC TIES BY MNS OWN MONEY AND KPA
NO SPECIFIC PLACE WHERE KPA MEMBERS CAN GATHER, AND ORGANIZE THEMSELVES
AIM
ARCHITECTURE AS MEDIA TO SHOW CLIENTS IMAGE
PROVIDE BETTER FACILITIES AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
OBJECTIVE
- TO INCREASE AWARENESS ON THE CONSERVATION OF THE NATURAL HERITAGE. - TEACH THE SOCIETY ABOUT IMPORTANCE THE ENVIRONMENT
idea This EEC will be the hub of all MNS, and KPA activities. This is a headquaerters for them. This EEC will help this noble act of MNS and KPA in saving the world. Because of the building name is Environmental Education Center , the building itself must show that it cares about the environment as well. The building itself must educate people about eco friendly architecture, showing the public how to be environmental friendly in terms of building design. This gives me the idea of using passive design strategies to reduce the usage of electrical power and water. To achieved that ambition, i have to consider about the building plan shape and its orientation towards sunlight. For cross ventilation to successfully occurs, a narrow plan should be used. The facade must be facing north-south, to reduce solar heat gain from east-west. To reduce the heating effect, large overhang must be used. Solar panels and rain water harvesting also used. The uses of both technology will keep the building independent from electrical and water supply from TNB and SYABAS.
conceptual model
TREEHOUSE
concept The members of KPA are scho ols from all over the Malaysia. The participant usually scho ol children. The concept for this EEC is derived from children’ s dream or experienced or things that common with children, which is TREEHOUSE. Treehouse usually built for children by their parents. It is build near a tree, on a tree or even surrounded by trees. Treehouse brings children closer to nature. It’s common condition or features is elevated. The treehouse usually provides view of the neighbourho od. The TREEHOUSE concept is chosen because it is more related to children, and it is also understandable by children.
The other essence of treehouse that i translate into my design is the zoning, the top level as private area, the middle one is for learning area or education area. The lowest level is a place to relax. The next essence of a tree-
A treehouse is usually made of 5 things. The first and important element is viewing deck. It is the place where children is learning by observing the surrounding. The second thing is access into the top level , usually ladder. The next item on the list is shelter, some of the treehouse have the shelter, where children can protect themselves against rain and sun. Pulley also one of the element that made up a treehouse, it is used to transfer stuffs to the upper level easier and faster. The last thing is hammock, or a place to relax or sit on.
house that i used is elevated. Elevation provide wider and further view of the site, and also increase the ventilation as the wind speed is faster on higher level. Openings must be provided in order for the ventilation to be efficient.
Treehouse always built near , on, or near a tree. It is suitable for the EEC because it is surrounded by FRIM’s trees. The last essence is vertical access. Which provide access to all level of the EEC.

design strategies PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES
CONSTRUCTION IDEA The construction for the EEC must related to the site architecture. It cannot be to o alien from the site. The site, FRIM is famous and surrounded by trees. Wo od product also abundant, can be seen at the site. Thus i chose timber as one of the materials for the building. Because of this semester syllabus for Construction Technology is steel construction, I have to follow the syllabus. The building will appears light in weight when using steel. The installation of steel structure is quite fast. This will be an advantage because of the status of the site as the picnic area, the construction cannot disturbed the area for long.
THE CYCLE OF ENERGY,WATER AND WASTE As an architect, we must aware of the building’s supply of electrical and water . Inspired by BIG, from their project called ‘ Learning From Lomborg”, i came up with this diagram below that shows the cycle of energy w , ater and waste. The building will used solar panels for electrical power supply ,
rain water harvesting for its water , and the waste produced in the building will be turned into compost and will be spread to the nearby trees which have been the supplier of fo od for the monkey and wildboar. The trees also will supply oxygen and reduce carbon dioxide. and also provide shade to the site. This idea will help the building educates the public on how to become sustainable.
