INDIAN FARMER

Welcome... ... to your December issue. This month we are very excited to bring you an interview with my favourite Superhero; Spiderman. You can imagine my surprise when while delivering last months issue in Olhão, he should stroll accross the road infront of us. A quick search on Facebook revealed that he's often seen around the town and after a message or two, a meeting was set up. It's safe to say, this months cover is one of my favourites... Spiderman sat on a bench, in Olhão... love it! Continuing the excitement, we also visited 'Casa do Natal', a shop that is literally just for Christmas, with anything and everything you could wish for to make your home ready for the season's festivities. All this plus our usual news, finance and health news. As ever, we welcome your comments, please email us on info@eastalgarvemag.com

Portugal’s senior residences shortage

ortugal is estimated to need an additional 55,000 beds in residences for the elderly to meet the growing demand from the senior market. According to the 'Building a healthier and more thriving future' study, released by CBRE, more than 20 projects are either under construction or in the licensing phase for residences for the elderly in the national market, but this will not be enough to fulfil the demand. In less than 30 years, more than a third of the population residing in Portugal will be seniors, which is equivalent to a total of 3.3 million people (an additional 1 million compared to the current 2.3 million). To respond to this demographic evolution, an additional 55,000 beds will be needed in senior homes, making this an attractive opportunity for potential investors. CBRE believes that the private sector will need to respond to the demand while highlighting that several foreign operators are already in existence in the country including Orpea, Domus Vi,

Domitys and Clece; working alongside Portuguese companies such as UHub, a Amera and BF. Ageing population Currently Portugal has the third highest proportion of elderly in Europe and by 2050 it is expected to have the highest level. The rise in retirees is compounded by the fact that while Portugal has one of the highest life expectancies in Europe, it also has some of the lowest levels of healthy seniors. The high price of senior homes in Portugal has been one of the obstacles to the growth in supply, states CBRE. Prices in private homes vary considerably depending on the resident's degree of dependency, necessary medical care and additional services (such as leisure activities, hairdressing, etc.). The average base price in a professionally managed private residence is, based on the survey, approximately €1,200, which represents a very high cost compared to the average value of pensions, which is €5,811 a year or €484.25 per month in Portugal. Portuguese pensioners also have

to contend with competition from foreign retirees who in general have larger pensions. According to CBRE, the increase in foreigners living in Portugal will tend to be reflected in an increase in the offer of higher quality senior residences with a greater offer of equipment and services. In Portugal, the provision of accommodation for the senior population is part of the Residential Structures for Elderly People (ERPI) and is complemented by the National Network of Integrated Continued Care (RNCCI) and by some houses for independent elderly people. There are currently around 100,500 beds in ERPI, of which only 23 percent belong to private for-profit entities. According to the World Health Organization, the supply of beds in homes for seniors should correspond to 5 percent of the elderly population. This means that Portugal currently has a deficit of 4,500 beds and by 2050, at least 55,000 will need to be created.

O

n 16 November, a group of 60 seahorses (most of them born in captivity) were released into the Ria Formosa. This is part of a repopulation project called ‘Seahorse’ and is being carried out in the place where just 20 years ago was the largest seahorse community in the world. In 2000, the community of these fish in the Ria Formosa, Algarve, was considered the largest in the world, but in 20 years "there has been a reduction of 96 percent in numbers", Jorge Palma, a researcher at the Center for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) at the University of the Algarve (UAlg) told reporters. The animals were released in one of the two sanctuary areas recently created in the estuary, between Faro and Olhão where artificial structures have been placed to recreate their natural habitat so that they can settle there. Most of these seahorses were born in the tanks of the Ramalhete Marine Station, in Faro, but their parents are specimens that lived in the wild and were taken there in order to breed, thus contributing to the conservation of the species. The project, "only makes sense because the introduction is made in a protected area, otherwise they would be exposed to

6

negative effects that may still exist in the estuary", stressed Jorge Palma, noting that the objective is that the animals stay in the sanctuary. The seahorses were transported by boat in two tanks to a protected area, about half a mile off the coast, where sailing is prohibited. They were then carefully placed in small cages to be taken into the water by divers. The team of divers took the cages to the bottom, at a depth of about four meters, to then release the animals next to the artificial reefs that will become their habitat. According to Jorge Palma, these fish are “completely different from all the others” and also “poor swimmers”, which makes them “very vulnerable”, as they “have to be always attached to something”. Although most of the animals released were only between seven months and a year old, they are already adults and during their short life in captivity their ability to survive in the wild has been preserved, he added. “What we gave them in captivity is not feed, but their natural prey that they have to hunt in tanks, so when they are released, they will maintain this ability to survive in the natural environment”, noted the researcher.

THEN OLHÃO

FOUND US... ... and we weren't even looking! Hank and Corina's story of how they came to live in and love Olhão

W

elcome to our monthly column celebrating Olhão. After exploring Portugal top to bottom from Braga to Tavira enjoying so many coastal and inland locations in our RV, we decided Olhão was the place to buy our home to celebrate our “golden years”. Honestly, we almost lost that chance. Both Carina and I received news in our 50’s that “The Big C” had arrived. After doctors and treatments and a year of fear and gratefully recovery, we both decided waiting “till next year” to do the traveling we always talked about was no longer our plan! So we cut short our careers in both California and Sweden, and for the last decade, we’ve traveled every winter, backpacking to Asia, South and Central America and Europe, staying a month in each country and, usually, spending less than at home! We knew we liked good food and warm winters and hoped we could settle where our families could enjoy being with us. Olhão was not on our radar at first. In fact, the discovery of Eastern Algarve was a pleasant surprise with the scale of development so much less than areas to the west. A chance winter rental introduced us to Olhao, a place we quickly found attractive for many reasons. “Walkability” is, above all, a main highlight and each month I will introduce you to places only steps away from our front door. We hope you will enjoy our column! El Torito One thing we miss about living in California is Mexican food. We’ve tried places in other countries, but almost always we are disappointed. El Torito faces the Ria Formosa esplanade just west of the Olhão Mercado and on our first visit, I knew we would be back. Sometimes it is the little details that indicate a place is doing things right. Both the salsa and guacamole are first rate and the chips are made in house. During the covid lockdowns last winter, take out was mostly the only option. El Torito kept us happy with great prices on their to go menu. I mostly favored the vegetarian combo and Carina ordered her usual, chicken quesadillas. This fall with our family visiting, we together went whole hog and ordered almost everything on the menu. That included dessert (all made in-house!), and boy I was impressed with an indulgence I never usually allow myself. (With all the great restaurants here in Olhão, that is happening a lot!). In the space of that six day visit, our folks chose El Torito again for their last “dinner out” night before returning to Sweden. That should tell you something!

VIP Real Estate We really did not plan on buying our apartment here. The goal last January 9th stepping off the plane was to spend a month not freezing in the dark. Our one month rental here in Marina Village offered a location we knew would allow us to walk to most places. That was enough to keep us happy. With the Mercado offering fresh fish. meat and veggies close by together with three large markets all just a level stroll away, bells started going off. The esplanade along the Ria Formosa with views of the marina promised to be special although in early 2021, improvements were still under construction. We couldn’t help but to peer into the various real estate window displays wondering if our new home might be looking back at us. After only five days of exploring Olhão on foot, we entered the office at VIP Properties, located on the street facing the esplanade just in front of the Mercado. Carol and Carlos greeted us and we simply said, “Here is our budget. Can you find us something?” That they did. Within an hour, we visited what would be our new ground floor apartment all of 42 steps from the Ria Formosa waterfront. After seeing the view out onto the water from the living room, we were hooked. Visiting the rooftop pool with an even better lookout to the beautiful tidal flats sealed the deal. Buying property in a foreign country is not for the fainthearted. Portugal is famous for rolling out the red tape with plenty of administrative hoops to jump through. At every step along the way beginning with offering an innovative negotiation strategy that met our budget, VIP kept us moving forward. Carol probably was never asked so many questions and Carlos went above and beyond securing our power and water accounts without us having to lift a finger. Now we are, finally, home! We choose to focus on businesses here in Olhao where we have actually been customers first. Any future advertising from these businesses that supports Eastern Algarve Magazine is purely coincidental :-)

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT YOUR FUTURE HERE IN THE ALGARVE?

P

Is it time we addressed the ageing elephant in the room? Consider your options for the future, in time you may not be as independant as you are now

erhaps we try not to think about it too much, or maybe you have a home somewhere you plan to return to, should the time come when you or your partner need a little extra care or a helping hand. But let's face it, the time will come, and we will all have to deal with it eventually. So what are your options? Of course going 'home' is one of them, but where do you consider home now? How would you feel returning to a place you haven't lived for years, leaving your friends, lifestyle and the wonderful climate you probably moved here for in the first place. What would the place you left years ago be like for you now, at this age and stage in your life? After all, the world and you have seen drastic changes over the last few years alone. Of course many of us have family who would love to take care of us, but is that really an option today? Do we want to become a burden to our children? They have their busy lives to get on with and do they really have time or space to take care of granny and grandad? An alternative is homecare. Perfect if you know when you'll need assistance and are able to plan ahead for help. This, however, can become expensive, should you need care more often. The other concern is, would the limited number of companies offering this type of service have enough staff to look after you when that time comes? Maybe this is a risk people are willing to take, however, now is the time to ask ourselves, is it a viable, safe, reliable option?

14

The most drastic option would be a care home facility. Currently in the Algarve we only have one international (English speaking) care home, which is fully occupied at the moment, and with a waiting list. Apart from buying a property on the complex (also very limited availability), full care would be the only option, but again, there are no current places available, and if there was, it comes at a hefty price, especially if you don't require the full speciality care on offer. A much cheaper option would be a Portuguese facility. Although ideal for native speakers, many of us struggle with the language. How would we feel surrounded by people speaking Portuguese 24/7? I'm not so sure that would work for me. So what are we left with? A care home back home? Well, if you're from the UK, I can assure you (from experience) this is a very expensive option, and with laws changing on a regular basis, what will our rights be in the future? Is selling our homes and assets to pay for care a sensible option? I'm not so sure. Up to now, it appears our options are limited. Here's where we think we have a solution. Our idea is to offer a place that has care facilities available should you need it... whatever level of care, whenever you require it. The idea is to rent a suite on a monthly basis. This suite will be yours and yours only, and available for you to use, as and when you wish, even as full time accommodation. Facilities available include an outdoor pool, indoor pool, gym, sauna and turkish bath. Residents will have a private restaurant and

BBQ area, only available to them and their guests. On the premises would also be a Restaurant, Croquet lawn and Padel tennis courts, which would all be open to the general public. Most importantly we will have medical facilities available. This will include a doctor's surgery and nurses at hand 24 hours a day. So how would you benefit by renting one of our suites? Well, all of the concerns mentioned before are taken care of. Should you or your partner require help, even for a short period of time, you simply stay at your suite for as long as you need to. Help will be there should you need it, at the press of a button. If you decided one of you needed care on a more permanent basis, you have the option to move into your suite. This would even allow you to release equity on any property you may have, should you wish to. Where's the catch? Honestly, there isn't one. You will have no long term contract, you may vacate your suite after giving a short notice period. There will be a nominal fee for upkeep of the property and of course utility bills. The monthly cost for a suite is the same as you can currently rent an apartment for in a typical town in the East Algarve. Where's the location? We are located only 15km from Tavira, Fuzeta and Olhão. If you would like further information, or would like to visit the complex please email us on info@eastalgarvemag.com

What childhood dreams are made of!

A

ll questions prepared, with our phones ready to take notes, we set off and were ready to meet a legend and Superhero at our scheduled appointment in Olhão. We arrived, Spidey was surrounded by an audience, we joined and promptly forgot about all our preparations. Awe struck at meeting our childhood hero, we retained the most essential points. So who is the man behind the mask? Well now, that would be telling... in true superhero style, his identity would not be revealed. All we know is that Spidey is 23 years old and has lived in Olhão for only a year. His superheroism started just for fun with friends, as he had a spiderman outfit. He decided to go for a wander around the streets in costume and before he knew it, his super powers became apparent; the ability to make everyone's life and day a little brighter. Asked what his favourite part of being Spiderman was, he revealed "All of it! If there is a downside, it's that during winter it can get a little chilly. Even spiders feel the cold." Spidey can be booked for events like birthday parties, meet and greets and openings, but only when he is free and not visiting schools encouraging children to remember anything is possible, even meeting your superhero. For us, this was a memorable day, we walked away feeling like we could spread happiness, because "Spidey said so." Contact Spiderman through Facebook: 'Spider-man of Olhão'

t’s that time of the year again when we reflect on the past year and provide an outlook for the property market in the year ahead, 2022. It’s been a remarkable time which has seen property prices rise again. We are now almost two years into the pandemic with a new wave, the 4th taking place with an alarming increase of Covid-19 infections in various Northern European countries. A new corona variant in South Africa is reason for caution as it spreads faster and is potentially more dangerous. Lockdowns are again looking to be part of the solution to stop the spreading of the virus which potentially can slow down the economic recovery. However, the property market in Portugal never looked back and continued to rise, despite the pandemic, or better, because of the pandemic and the unprecedented financial support and negative interest rates to deal with the deepest recession since World War II. In addition the Portuguese government offered financial support and tax holidays for businesses and individuals alike and banks put a moratorium in mortgage repayments for those who needed it. The extraordinary measures have led to increasing debt to GDP levels, which in some southern European countries were already very high and well above the 60% threshold agreed in the Maastricht treaty 28 years ago. Countries with low debt levels are financially in a better position to support their economy from the Covid-19 fall out (Portugal 137.2%, Italy 160%, France 118%, Germany 71.1%, Holland 54.9%, Greece 209.3%, and Belgium 118.6%). Due to pressure from France, even Germany is changing their stance on the 60% rule as low interest rates can sustain the servicing of higher debt levels. Is 100% the new 60%? High debt levels of countries are also seen as the reason why interest rates have limited room to move up in the future, as many countries would not be able to service their debt at higher price levels. As global economies are recovering from the great recession, central banks are slowly reducing their accommodative monetary policies, with the USA taking the lead as inflation rates are high and the call for action is increasing. Initially, central banks welcomed inflation as it was moving to their preferred 2% level, then dismissed inflation as a temporary issue which would come down in 2022, then it was said it was transitory and now it seems that inflationary pressures are more persistent than initially expected and far from transitory. There is concern for the dreaded wage-price spiral in which temporary inflation becomes sustained when automatically linking wage increases to actual inflation. The ECB position is that indexing is part of the problem, not the solution. However, its own staff through their trade union IPSO is calling for higher wages to protect employees’ purchasing power against higher prices for goods and services. Eventually interest rates will have to go up which makes the cost of borrowing more expensive for businesses and homeowners with a mortgage. Higher interest rates are not expected to have a significant effect on the market unless they rise drastically.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

In 2022 we expect property prices to continue their upward trajectory due to strong demand and a shortage of supply. In addition, prices of building materials are likely to rise, especially steel and cement, adding upward pressure to prices of newly built properties. When it comes to carbon dioxide pollution, both industries are amongst the biggest polluters. The transition to a more environmentally friendly production process will take years and large investments, which is likely to lead to price increases. The CEO of Tata Steel, a major steel producer, sees the average price of steel at a much higher level in the coming 10 years (Average above §600 per metric tonne) than in the past 10 years (average $400 – 450 per metric tonne). With little new supply, it is a demand driven market. After January 2022, investors will no longer be able to apply for a golden visa when purchasing real estate in the Algarve. From now on, the new rules will only allow low density residential areas. In addition to the Algarve this also includes Lisbon and Porto. As supply was already tight we do not expect this to have an impact on property prices. During lockdowns people had time to reflect on the way they live and their careers. Some came to the conclusion that they wanted a better quality of life with more outdoor space or decided to follow their dream to live abroad. We expect this trend to continue on in the New Year. As the economic recovery in Europe continues, unemployment levels have fallen to prepandemic levels in September. Portugal exceeded its pre-pandemic employment

already in Q2 of 2021. There is a shortage of employees just like in other countries where they talk about the great resignation….where have all the workers gone to? They may have chosen early retirement or a different career path including moving abroad, or are simply preferring to stay at home as a result of Covid angst. Just like in other European countries, there is a shortage of affordable housing for starters to buy or to rent. Decades of under investment in this segment of the market cannot easily be undone. The economic stimulus may have kept people in their job, but it also widened the division between the haves and the have nots as easy money has inflated financial assets, including real estate. The ECB has warned about the increased exuberance in property markets which may prove vulnerable and susceptible to a correction in case interest rates rise sharply due to higher than expected inflation. Nevertheless investors will continue seeking alternative investment opportunities such as real estate due to negative interest rates on saving accounts. Expect the search for yield to continue in 2022. Due to rising inflation the world's leading economies will have the lowest real interest rates in as many as 50 years. There is a correlation between real rates (nominal rates minus inflation) and financial assets. When real rates decline, the value of assets go up. Real rates are currently negative. When using consensus inflation forecast for 2022, real rates are approx. minus 2.7% in Germany, 3.2% in the UK and 3.3% in the USA. In other words, the cost of borrowing money has not been this

low for a very, very long time. If the increase in Covid infections is putting you off from buying a property then you would also not have bought in early 2019 at the start of the pandemic and would not have benefited from a rising market. Of course prices also can go down in the future for various reasons, e.g. an economic recession, imbalance in supply and demand etc. However, in the long run, prices go up due to rising wages, higher cost of materials, product innovation and general inflation. Should you decide to make the Algarve your home, you will find that the local Portuguese people are friendly and welcoming. The Algarve is truly a melting pot of locals and foreigners from all nationalities and cultural backgrounds. It’s also a place with lots of sunshine and good food, but I guess you already knew that! Ovens in the Sun There's more to a clean oven than meets the eye! Meet Ollie and Christine from Ovens in the Sun and find out why their service not only saves you money, but is good for your health too!

W

e meet Ollie and Christine from Ovens in the Sun who moved to Tavira from the UK to hear about their move to Portugal, and also how and why they started their business Ovens in the Sun. "When we moved here 3.5 years ago and had 2 rentals in the centre of Tavira, the intention was for them to provide the main source of income for us here. Like so many, COVID 19 has had a negative impact on businesses and we began to search for ways to help us survive. During the first lockdown we explored many avenues and discovered no one in the Algarve provides this beneficial cleaning service. We did further research and training, and found many expats from the UK and other countries have used oven cleaning services prior to moving here. Fortunately, even though the concept is relatively new, especially to many in our host country of Portugal, our service is catching on and we are making kitchens brighter, one oven at a time". Ovens in the Sun is a registered business operating in the Algarve for the last year. Ollie and Christine provide high quality professional oven cleaning, hobs, ranges and microwaves within your home. They use specialised equipment to clean your oven using a variety of non toxic chemicals, eco

34

and vegan friendly products. BENEFITS ● A clean oven makes for a safer kitchen. If your oven is full of grease and food residue it increases the risk of fire. ● Neglected ovens harbour bacteria and germs making it unhygienic to cook in. ● Save on electricity bills. An unclean oven takes longer to heat. ● Save valuable time and a professional oven cleaner has the right tools to clean your oven. ● A clean oven will help your food taste better and will help your oven to cook more evenly. ● The job everyone hates to do. THE PROCESS. Tools ● Ovens in the sun carry the tools required to cover every situation including Thomas (Thomas the dip tank). Protect the area ● Floors and the surrounding areas are covered to ensure your kitchen is kept clean. Remove & Clean Oven Doors ● Carefully remove the oven doors and dismantle ready to clean components individually by hand. This helps us get rid of the build up of grease and smears between the layers of glass. Seals are checked and secured before reassembly. Clean The Racks & Shelves ● Racks, shelves and rack holders (located on the sides) are removed. Grime and grease

is removed by cleaning them all in a dip tank to steam clean using vegan friendly products. Where possible the knobs are removed to allow full access to cleaning your oven. Remove the back plate ● This reveals the oven fan which is also removed and placed in the dip tank. Deep Clean The Oven ● The oven is deep cleaned using Ecofriendly products, getting into those hard to reach places and reassemble your oven ready to use. Giving you an oven to be proud of. Most people choose a 6-12 month visit from Ovens in the Sun. Keeping our pets safe ● A clean oven also helps to keep our pets safe ● Pets are more vulnerable than people to exposure to toxins that can arise from cooking in a dirty oven ● Animals have faster metabolisms and smaller lungs so have to work harder to eliminate toxins ● Ovens in the Sun care about the welfare of your pets and can clean your oven professionally using pet friendly products. Sport People

Sweet success after a long lay-off

A

Walking football returns, by Chris Wright and Neil Morris

fter a long absence, tournament walking football returned to the Algarve in October, and it was East Algarve Walking Football (EAWF) who continued to dominate the sport. The players may have been two years older - sprightly Peter Walpole at 82 being the oldest participant - but their skill and passion for the sport shone through. The 6th Algarve Walking Football Cup at Browns Sports & Leisure Centre, Vilamoura, involved sixteen teams from across Europe including a strong delegation from the Netherlands. In the Senior Section (60+) an unfancied EAWF Tavira team played out of their skins to reach the final where they played Cambuur Bruin (Leeuwarden, Netherlands). With the teams level at the final whistle the dreaded penalty shoot-out saw Peter Dickinson bury - what proved to be - the deciding spot-kick before Jan van der Bij saved the Dutch team’s next penalty to secure an unlikely but highly prized tournament victory. With a solid defence, creative midfield and front man Roy Clark slotting home four goals this was a team effort to be proud of, particularly as Tavira became the first EAWF 60+ team to win a tournament. In the 50+ section EAWF entered three teams (Olhão, Tavira and Moncarapacho) who competed against Sporting Ramsgits (Kent), Clitheroe (Lancashire), SC Farense and Kingsmaid Club (Manchester). The Manchester club cruised through to the final where they

38

met EAWF Olhão who overcame EAWF Moncarapacho 4-0 in the semi-final. After a goalless final, Kingsmaid held their nerve to win the Trophy 3-2 on penalties and consign EAWF Olhão to the runner-up spot. Just two days later the players girded their loins to do battle at the 2nd EuroCopa Walking Football Tournament in Albufeira organised by Algarve Football Tours. Once again teams from across Europe, together with a team from South Africa, competed under a cloudless blue Algarvean sky. In the 50+ section EAWF Tavira and EAWF Olhão reached the final, the first time this had happened in EAWF tournament history. To reach the final after the group stages EAWF Tavira and EAWF Olhão had to overcome strong opposition from Benfica and Seaton Carew (Durham). The final saw Olhão take the lead twice, only for Tavira to strike back and lead 3-2 with the clock ticking down. A dramatic last-minute goal from Jesus Ruiz - his hat trick - levelled the score at 3-3. EAWF Tavira won the penalty shootout to lift the prestigious EuroCopa 50+ Cup. In a tough 60+ section EAWF Tavira and EAWF Olhão faced strong opposition from 1874 Northwich (Cheshire), Bilbao (Spain), SC Farense and Seaton Carew (Durham). The Durham side defeated SC Farense in the final. Whilst congratulating the victorious teams it would be remiss not to mention the team managers and particularly Jonathan Syed whose sterling efforts and long

hours on the phone ensured that EAWF met all their commitments despite injuries and aging muscles! A tremendous tournament with all the teams playing within the spirit of the game and barely a bad tackle in sight. Some games were a bit brisk for the definition of walking football, but other games demonstrated good examples of how walking football should be played - fast moving ball; slow moving players. Last month FC Prostata from Denmark were joined by Voksenfodbold Halsnæs (Copenhagen) in making their third visit to play walking football against EAWF and even normal football against East Algarve FC. The visitors, who have all recovered from prostate cancer, enjoyed the friendly challenge and lively banter that has further cemented the bonds of friendship between the two groups. Non-contact walking football for the Over 70s now takes place on Friday mornings from 9.30 to 11.00am at the astro-turf pitch adjoining the SC Olhanense Stadium. The new concept involves no tackling and players are required to give their opponents two metres space; more a game of movement and angles. Several players who had previously played walking football but fear they cannot afford to be on the receiving end of bumps and knocks have found the new format beneficial. The group would also welcome slightly younger players who may be recovering from injury or surgery. www.walkingfootballalgarve.com

SOMEWHERE ELSE, DAVE’S BAR…

B

Not just the name, but what a thrilling story this little hidden gem has

asking in sunshine for almost 12 months of the year is something neighbouring bars can only dream of. Set on the north side of the river and previously known as the Australia bar – this sun drenched terrace serving snacks and a wide range of drinks can be found on the approach to Bishop's Square. Boasting all sports from rugby to football, even on the odd day of no sunshine, you have a great reason to join us! Dave's bar is currently co-managed by the ever reliable and absolutely AMAZING Edith and Di, as Dave and Leah returned to the UK. The bar is still going strong with not only music (sometimes dictated by Wayne!), but also a fun and friendly atmosphere to go with the mojo. From Estrella on draft, Vinho Verde by the glass (or bottle), Sangria, G&Ts or a Foxy Mojito – we have an absolutely splendid drink selection, as well as excellent English comfort food to keep you going and ready to explore our beautiful Tavira. With Christmas coming, and the clock ticking – we plan to make December 2021 a month

www.eastalgarvemag.com

to remember...! The main date for your diary, and one not to forget is Sunday, 19th December - Our Christmas Party. An event not to miss, with a buffet and mulled wine provided, in part to thank the loyal customers of the bar. Keep up to date on our Facebook page, with further dates to be confirmed for the Christmas quiz night and our final leaving celebrations! At the time of writing this, our thoughts go out to everyone during this horrible pandemic which has affected everyone. Safety will always be our number one priority, but second to that, let us try to celebrate the remainder of 2021 in style! And finally, a big thank you to Dave and Leah Barnes for all their efforts since September 2017. In tandem we wish the new owners, Rui and Margarida, the very best of luck for 2022 and beyond. Stay safe, have a great Christmas and See You ALL Very Soon! Keep a special eye out for the brief return of David Barnes too! *Please note this article and any pictures taken were before 1st December 2021.*

Reviving the Parc de Lazer, Mata da Conceição Locals and Expats pull together & replace the trees destroyed in the recent fires

L

ots of volunteers, expats from Italy, Spain and UK and Portuguese citizens from Quinta de Alvisquer Centro Equestre with friends from DunasvaleTerraplanages Lda had a very special day on 13 November 2021 at the Parc de Lazer. We wanted to participate in reforestation of the Mata da Conceição. The fire that started on August 16 in the municipality of Castro Marim, consumed a burned area of around 6,700 hectares. Many of the trees in the Parc de Lazer were completely destroyed or

40

badly damaged by these devastating fires. Antonio Izquierdo Ruiz and Norberto Martins organised the event with permission granted by Tavira Verde and Tavira City Council. During the day we were able to plant over 120 trees, Cork Oaks and Medronho that really grow well together and are less likely to be affected by future fires. Fortunately, the herd of deer that graze there were unaffected by the fire as they were able move to the lakeside. Much of their natural grazing was no longer available so Antonio and Norberto were able to supply hay to help them survive. There is a great deal more to do in the Parc de Lazer even though

some trees survived. Tavira City Council will obtain quotes for the complete removal of the worst affected trees. Later this year and in the early part of 2022 we shall be purchasing more saplings and working again to help this beautiful landscape to recover. Volunteers who want to assist and any donations to help with the cost of saplings will be gratefully received. Please contact Antonio Riuz at Qunita de Alvisquer Centro Equestre, EN125 Conceicao de Tavira 8800 - 058. Tel +34 615 840 530 or via WhatsApp or Facebook

The cast of ‘The Great Pretenders’

Theatre in São Brás

RESTAURANTE FRANGANARIO Tavira

A new play, ‘The Great Pretenders’ takes a comic look at historical facts surrounding the marriage of Queen Victoria’s relative, Prince Carlos of Portugal

S

et in the middle of the 19th century, when several noble ladies and princesses had ambitions to marry the prince. An eligible bachelor and heir to the Portuguese throne, his wish to find a suitable bride created a great deal of interest in the royal courts of Europe. The production focuses on two of the most likely candidates, Princess Victoria of Wales and the French Princess, Amelia of Orleans. The rivalry between them results in tension and when Queen Victoria intervenes the situation is potentially explosive! There is a showdown when Britain challenges Portugal over land in Africa and Cecil Rhodes becomes involved in negotiations. His ambitious

www.eastalgarvemag.com

BAD ADVICE

T

his month we attempt to understand a neighbourly dispute. Each party in the dispute will briefly have an opportunity to put their side of the story forward for

balance. After being filmed in their Vila Real de Santo António neighbourhood for a British TV network recording "ExPat Neighbours from Hell", Norman and June Goode are suing the producers of the show and their neighbours for defamation and misrepresentation. First we speak to a neighbour who started an anonymous petition, signed by over 250 people in their neighbourhood, making tabloid news. This neighbour wishes to remain anonymous. From your perspective, why was it necessary to start a petition against the Goode’s? Anonymous neighbour: It’s a long story. First of all, we are not dealing with people like you or me, but maniacs, that would make a dictator blush. It turns out when I Googled them, the reason this couple left the UK is because the TV crew had followed their story from Chesterfield. The Derbyshire police had put a restraining order for harassment against their neighbours. They may look like a kind and sweet elderly couple but they are a nightmare for anyone to be near. For example, the neighbourhood has had a forged note delivered. It’s translated into six languages about rules for Christmas 2021 and NYE 2022. The two rules read, "on NYE no noise or music can be played in the neighbourhood past 8pm above 30 decibels. The other "rule", is families larger than 4 cannot congregate on Christmas day or any vehicles parked within 10 metres of 12C Rua do Medo or they will be wheel clamped with a €250 release fee." The note is forged to look like an official note from the Freguesia and the GNR, but of course, we have officially been told it is a fake! It is like Scrooge seeks to shackle the neighbourhood! If anyone sneezes, the police are called. The Goode’s live in a terrace house, but forbid people to walk outside on "their private" pavement. If they do, they are verbally abused and even "hexed!" They also claimed nearby public wasteland is owned by them, putting up "private" "keep out notices." A solicitor got involved and of course it is not their land. That's when I contacted the film and

production crew from 6 Reality. Norman once told us he is related to "Royal blood" so we must obey! Why does he live in a small terrace house then and not a Palace? They sprayed local children with hoses if they played, claiming these soakings were "accidental." There was a spate of car tires let down at night if anyone challenged them. No one can take these monsters anymore and just want, what the locals call, "the Hitler’s" to leave and never come back to ruin our lives in the sun! She is like a velociraptor with a piercing scream, and he is an evil Goblin with a pencil moustache. Legal proceedings are taking too long and we can’t take it any more! Help us, please, help us! We now speak to Reality 6 producers: The Goode’s have taken legal proceedings against you for defamation and persecution. What is your comment on their UK and Algarvian activities? Reality 6: "I think we are dealing with very dangerous and delusional individuals with police proceedings against them in the UK and the Algarve. Norman has attacked our cameraman and crews several times, and for a man of 75 he sure can use a cane effectively. The defamation case they speak of will fall apart. We set up CCTV where a hooded figure is seen delivering packages through the door of the individual who started the petition, containing rotten fish and dog excrement of the individual who started the petition. Our vehicles are often covered in such projectiles and the hooded walker carries a cane. Another incident is where a six year old girl left her dolls outside on the street. They were all found beheaded in the dustbin. June sat there smirking denying any knowledge when the mother came by, and shouted "learn English you ignorant peasant bitch!" When the children were outside playing, we caught footage of June, rolling marbles over the street and setting traps for anyone on bikes. When there is an accident, it is the only time they go in and do not guard the front of their house! The comments in all languages on the petition are shocking. What are the worst stories you’ve heard or captured? Reality 6: My goodness, so many, from putting objects in neighbours gardens, and then calling the police accusing them of theft! Calling the police endlessly, from when a dog barks, a stranger walks by without a mask, despite

the mandate having ended, or if a baby cries. They have a dog that barks all night, but they say it is for safety as they are surrounded by dangerous people! The worst incident was when they called the police on a disabled elderly Portuguese neighbour and called the police as she was having handrails put into her house at 1pm for the "noise!" The police told the Goode’s off for harassing her. We were not at location that evening, but the tires on her mobility scooter were slashed and who could be the suspect? In the UK neighbours of the Goode’s ended up having breakdowns and are still in therapy. As some of the nastiest people you could ever meet, they deserved to be followed to the Algarve where they repeat their reign of misery. They have no friends. If they rarely go out, they call the police on any venue about service conditions, like rats that suddenly appear in their soup. We would like to see them imprisoned and face hefty fines, hopefully, banned from moving anywhere else unless it has bars! Out of all the ExPat neighbours from hell in the sun, they are by far our absolute worst! Last, of all, we contacted the Goode’s who delivered us a foul mouthed tirade and said they would call the police on us and there will be consequences if we publish anything about them. They hung up. Eventually Norman texted back. Norman wrote: "We have been followed and persecuted since finding our new home. We take morals and decency as pivotal and police our neighbourhood. We do not accept frivolous people or antisocial neighbours. The film crew have hired actors to pretend to be us. They are setting us up for entertainment! They have hired body doubles and aged them with makeup! The Portuguese and British police have cases against us, but we are being framed by a shadowy cabal as the media are trying to frame us. The political and moral integrity of society is lost and we must insist upon it wherever we live. It is character assassination, persecution and nothing else." Norman sent a pictorial attachment which we then Google image search, which was an Occult Hex used by Alistair Crowly. The Goode’s have declined any further comment, but maintain that they "are the most honest and decent people you could ever meet, now leave us alone. Or else!"

People

MEET PAUL NICHOLSON FROM ST.JAMES GLOBAL From St James Global, a big welcome and thank you to Richard Bassett from East Algarve Magazine for inviting us to this exciting initiative and the first of many articles on International Financial Planning for Non-Habitual Residents of Portugal.

S

t James Global was set up in Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 2002. The company provides offshore investment advice and asset protection to expatriates around the world, encompassing reliable retirement, estate and succession planning, security and peace of mind. The key individuals have been helping international investors with their international investments and structures for over 30 years, providing clients with the experience and know-how they deserve in a world of ever changing tax legislation and compliance. St James Global is truly independent and can provide unbiased and impartial advice across a universe of products, services and jurisdictions. Our products and services are designed to protect and preserve wealth in a safe and secure environment with particular reference to transparency of fees which are amongst the lowest in the industry, combined with an active but careful management process. Founder, Paul Nicholson lives with his wife and 3 Jack Russell’s in Tavira, having relocated from Cape Town in 2019. St James Global was established in Portugal in 2018 and has been successful in increasing the company's profile and clientele ever since. With offices in Vilamoura and Tavira, the team at St James Global have, and will continue to be involved in various initiatives throughout Central and Eastern Algarve. The St James Global Invitational Trophy was held in May with finalists from five clubs in the Algarve presented with a three course meal, a personalised uniform and a lot of bubbly held at Monte Rei Golf & Country Club. St James Global hopes that this will become an annual event, offering various golf clubs a new and exciting competition that will also support the charity of the club’s choosing. Our last event was a great success and St James Global were pleased to donate to charity €10 for everyone who reached the green on the 7 th hole. The

46

charities chosen by Vila Sol were Akredita - a children's charity/day centre in Quarteira, with the St James Global Private Clients generously topping up the donations to a total of €500. St James Global have been hosting short presentations throughout the Algarve to introduce their financial services, designed specifically for new or existing non-habitual residents of Portugal. The gatherings are both relaxed, informative and fun and have proven extremely popular. A series of presentations will take place at various venues throughout the Eastern Algarve commencing February 2022. Whilst this is a few months away, time passes so quickly - if you would like to receive an invitation at a venue near you, please do let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly. Canapes, wine and malt are complementary to those who attend. Going back to finance, the common objective when it comes to money in retirement is quite simple and often overlooked – SECURITY, ADMINISTRATION, PERFORMANCE AND SERVICE. It is our aim, as experts in international financial services, to provide you as an expat and international investor living in Portugal, with a simple, easy to understand and uncomplicated solution, enabling you to protect and preserve wealth well into the future. Our objective is to help our clients effectively move personal wealth out of one’s individual names, and thereby ensure that they bypass probate both in their country of residence and each country in which assets are located. This not only creates a managed environment for your money to grow outside of your estate, but is also incredibly tax efficient, in particular for those looking for income in retirement. Assets pass onto future heirs immediately and without costly and expensive probate. Our job is to help you maximise income in retirement through inexpensive and well-diversified investments and at the same time, provide you with a practical, cost effective and tax efficient way of consolidating world-wide assets held under one

structure. Now, in the case of Portugal which will be my focus, we have to look at the fiscal rules and regulations around a product that will be well suited for Non-Habitual Residents (NHR) in Portugal and be tax compliant in the country of domicile and where one’s assets are situated, for example, the UK. International Retirement Trusts are attractive alternatives to discretionary trusts for Expats living in Portugal who wish to secure their long-term financial future specifically for retirement planning purposes. They are ideal structures for Portuguese Non Habitual Residents who wish to consolidate assets offshore, either by cash or existing assets and investments. The Pension plans are backed up by a robust piece of pension legislation and offer retirement planning opportunities to investors who are looking to secure their long-term financial future. They are flexible, bespoke and are arranged in one of the most secure jurisdictions in the world. Looking at tax, in the case of UK Expats living in Portugal, one does however, need to look very closely at their tax residency if they are no longer tax resident in the UK, other than paying UK taxes on UK situs assets such as UK properties. Care needs to be taken to ensure you do not breach UK residence rules. The UK statutory residence test will enable you to answer the questions and confirm the number of days you can spend in the UK without becoming a UK tax resident. We at St James Global look forward to sharing many more informative articles and information with the ultimate aim of helping you, as a client, maximise income and your net worth into your retirement. We look forward to meeting you at one of our retirement presentations and will keep you posted on venues and dates in the January edition. WINTER WELLNESS Christmas is coming The goose is getting fat Please put a penny in the old man’s hat If you haven’t got a penny, a halfpenny will do If you haven’t got a halfpenny, may God bless you!

M

y childhood was full of these old English ditties which showed the social history of the ages. Using goose fat was commonplace in cooking, rearing your own goose was not unusual, inflation was unheard of, poverty was present in society and stress was plentiful. Fast forward to Christmas 2021 and who knows what’s in store. Chances are that the only similar factor is stress. Did you know that stress kills? Stress can be positive. We need an element of physical and emotional stress to motivate and get us out of bed each morning. However, when the level of stress experienced is overwhelming and therefore potentially unmanageable, your health will take a nosedive. Guaranteed. How you manage your stress level is an interesting conversation for many. From taking a long soak in a bath filled with essential oils and Epsom Salts to detox and de-stress you, to taking a gentle jog around your local park. From painting to craft making, from reading to playing music. These are all ways to reboot

54

your system. Find a way to de-stress yourself that fits who you are. Who you are depends upon your behavioural style and your natural behaviour characteristics. For example, using the DISC system of profiling, a high D behaviour style will de-stress by going for a long run and/ or having a sports massage. An ‘I’ type will party. High ‘S’ types may curl up with a book and high ‘C’ types often withdraw to recharge and de-stress. DISC Behavioural Profiling is an integral part of my Perfect 10 VIP Health Mentoring Programme. When my clients see the graphs and charts within their personal DISC report and understand how their behaviour is causing their health challenges, they are often astounded. Some even say that their life now makes sense after all these years! Not only does your behaviour style affect your health, it also has a significant effect upon relationships within your personal life and in the workplace. When opposing behaviour styles get together, without a deeper understanding of each other’s style, stress levels can go through the

roof. Christmas is a classic time for family and friends with different behavioural styles to get together with potential conflicts and misunderstandings created. When stress is high, so is your blood pressure; your body is under attack; your cells pick up negative energy which leads to inflammation and disease. Not a happy situation. However you are spending this Christmas, please keep your stress levels under review and don’t become a statistic of the wrong kind. Elaine Godley MBA, O.A. Dip (Psych) Elaine lives in the Algarve. Skin tags... what are they, why do we have them and can they be removed? Mara from Alegra Beauty Salon tells us all we need to know.

SKIN TAG REMOVAL

W

hat are Skin tags? Skin tags are made of collagen (a type of protein) and blood vessels surrounded by skin. They are usually found in the folds of the skin, for example, in the armpits, groin, thighs, eyelids, neck, face or under the breasts. They look different from warts and other benign skin lesions because of the small stalk that attaches them to the skin. Warts tend to be flat, while skin tags hang off the skin. Usually these growths are small and less than 2mm in size, but they can grow much larger. They feel soft, and can be smooth and round, wrinkly and uneven, or look like a grain of rice. They can be flesh coloured or darker, sometimes dark blue. Both men and women can have them and are more common in older people and people living with type 2 diabetes. Pregnant women are also more likely to develop skin tags, although these usually disappear after the baby is born. They are harmless, but sometimes the location of them can cause them to be sore and, for many, they are an eyesore. However, because they are harmless, removal of skin tags is not covered by insurance as it is considered a cosmetic procedure. The removal of Skin Tags can be accomplished through a number of different methods. One way is by using electrical energy (cauterising). Since June of 2020 I have been licensed to remove skin tags and treat age spots using electrocautery, whereby an electric probe or needle is used to burn off the skin tag or treat the area covered by an age spot. If you decide to have a skin tag or age spot removed because it is bothering you or you don’t like its appearance, contact me to schedule an appointment. For more info feel free to Contact me. 8 Houseplants that lower Humidity It’s that time of year again… we’re not referring to Christmas, but to indoor damp and humidity. A dehumidifier will help to solve indoor damp, but it will mean using more electricity. However, we can also get plants in our house to lower humidity.

H

ouseplants are a natural way to remove the damp ambiance and clammy air inside your home that lead to mustiness, damp, winter mold. Humidity absorbing indoor plants harvest their required moisture from the air and they bring the outdoors in. How plants help reduce humidity Most plants get moisture from the air by their leaves, but some of them are extremely efficient at the process and harvest much of their moisture through their leaves, here are our top 8:

2

Boston Fern This is another well-known houseplant that can thrive in more moist climates, and it will naturally absorb the air moisture. The Boston fern only needs moist soil and indirect sunlight to survive inside your home. You might need to mist the plant if your air dries out too much.

3

1

Peace Lily This plant will help reduce the level of humidity as it is a type of plant that despite being watered, will absorb moisture as well from the air through its leaves. It needs little sunlight to flourish, so it’s no challenge to keep this plant healthy indoors. Peace lily will help purify certain contaminants of your indoor air at the same time.

56

Palms Palms grow in more humid, tropical areas and will absorb a bit of moisture through their leaves. Whether you opt for lady palm, areca palm, bamboo palm or reed palm, they are all great at helping get rid of air pollutants indoors, formaldehyde in particular. Palms are easy to care for as well. But the most ideal if compared to other types is the reed palm as it can survive in lower light and can grow indoors. Just keep the soil moist all the time.

4

Orchids Epiphytes, such as orchids, are plants that thrive harmlessly on other objects or plants. They are definitely the types of plants that help reduce humidity indoors as they get nutrients and moisture from the air.

Spider Plant Spider plants are popular indoor plants, they are low maintenance and have an impressive appearance. Spider plants are capable of surviving in neglect and low light and they remove up to 90% of harmful air pollutants inside the house

Cactus Xerophytes like cactus are plants that can thrive in deserts and require low liquid water. They are known for their capability to grow in harsh temperature areas. These plants are commonly known to have thick stems and waxy or hairy leaves and are very useful for catching and keeping water from the air and reducing humidity.

8 6

Tillandsia A tillandsia flourishes best when kept indoors, in a sunny windowsill in order for it to receive lots of filtered sunlight. It lives off nutrients and moisture in the air by absorbing them through its leaves. This means tillandsia can be used as well as a very effective natural humidifier inside your home.

English Ivy English Ivy is fantastic if you have pets as it can help decrease the amount of airborne fecal matter. Apart from that, it can help absorb formaldehyde that is more known than you think as it is and can be found in furniture, household cleaning products, and carpeting treatments. English ivy can also remove molds that are common in humid areas. It’s easy to care for, needs little sunlight and soil needs to be kept moist. Great in hanging pots to absorb more humidity that rises.
