ith backgrounds in Anthropology of Art and Environmental Management, Kozii´s creators launched the brand in 2015, choosing the charismatic City of Tavira as it’s home, they now have four stores along the beautiful Portuguese southern coast, the most recent one in Lagos. Kozii’s designs are the result of many years of thorough research and travelling around the world, seeking to uncover exclusive materials. Its meticulous choice of fabrics, patterns and colours allow its designs to adapt as a second skin and creating an identity which is never under or overdressed. Amongst other processes previously used in Kozii’s productions, the Woodblock Printing remains its star technique. It consists of transferring patterns onto textiles by means of hand-carved wooden blocks. It is the earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile printing, yet capable of yielding highly artistic results, some of which unobtainable by any other method. This Year Kozii has ventured into a new printing technique, mixing in its classic block printing technique with a wax resist dyeing process, also known as Batik. melted, usually in a large pot. The carved wooden blocks are carefully dipped in this melted wax and the desired pattern is slowly hand-stamped onto to the fabric. Once the wax cools and thickens, the fabric is dipped in a cool colour drum where the wax acts as a resist component by not allowing the dye to penetrate the waxed areas. Finally, the fabric is dipped in a hot water solution that melts and removes the wax, leaving the area covered with wax in white. The process may be repeated to add on more colours, if desired.

KOZII’S SS22 WAX PRINTING TECHNIQUE Kozii is a growing fashion brand based in Tavira that is distinguished by maintaining the highest standards of quality and awareness in its material selection and production processes, blending contemporary sensibilities with long-lived traditions of excellence.

Batik prints are especially unique due to the way certain wax blends will "crackle" during handling, allowing lines of colour to come through on resisted areas and making every single piece unique. Hospital de Loulé opens a new clinic in Tavira Gran Plaza with Dr. Julio Triviño at the helm.

ast month, the Hospital de Loulé Group opened the ´Clínica do Plaza´ in the Plaza shopping center in Tavira.

to maintain the usual quality standards of this institution and consolidate it as one of the largest health groups in the Algarve. Heading up the team is physician Julio Triviño, who is 51 years old. He has been living in Tavira for more than twenty years and his professional life has always been practiced in a well known central clinic of which he has many fond memories. During this time he gained a large number of friends, many of them his patients. He is very well respected as a doctor in the region with an excellent reputation. Now, it is time for this exciting, new project; more modern and ambitious, with state of the art equipment and facilities. Twenty years ago, he was part of the best health services in Tavira. Today, the health sector has evolved in every way. The but the municipality of Tavira, on the other hand, seemed to remain complacent with styles and practices that did not show growth. Together with the Hospital de Loulé Group, Dr. Julio Triviño has changed this. The convenience and quality

more about the clinic. His excitement and enthusiasm was clear. Everything from the decoration and the 19 treatment Group provide had come together to open the clinic after years of planning. He says "It is essential for Tavira to have a place such as this. We are not an emergency hospital, but patients are able to walk in without an appointment and see a doctor and get treatment. We have great parking facilities and lifts making access easy for everyone. Our equipment

includes an Echocardiogram machine, Holter monitor for 24-hour ECG, MAPA monitor for 24 hour blood pressure control and in the near future a treadmill test to evaluate heart condition. You can also give blood here without an appointment. I have always felt that the people of Tavira; locals, foreigners and visitors of all nationalities deserved an upgraded facility with more class, modern and a vision for the future. One with all means and with a responsibility to provide a high quality of service and professional know-how. I am very proud of what we have achieved here and look forward to welcoming patients old and new" for various medical specialties including Dentistry, nursing services,

the Algarve is still one of the most popular holiday destinations in the World. You do not have to be rich to have a wonderful time here, there is something for all lifestyles. In addition, most if not all Covid-19 travel restrictions have been lifted, avoiding the need for costly testing. When you are on holiday with children it can be tricky if you have to stick to a budget. You will be buying them souvenirs, going out for dinner and from time to time taking them to a theme park. It is all part and parcel of a family holiday. Here are some tips to save money whether you are on a budget or not. The best tip, which can literally save you hundreds of Euros before going on holiday, we have saved for last. In the Algarve there are many theme parks, from Zoomarine to the various water parks and they all have promotions to attract visitors. It is just a matter of knowing how

point this out to you. Well, it is the best tip for you and your family to save money when planning a holiday. Equally important to us is that you are aware of your options. You may not be aware that the revenue of portals are taxed in tax havens like the Netherlands, Ireland, Luxembourg and Switzerland. The local economy does not

of the day, which means with a bit of planning you can save 50% on drinks. When it comes to eating out, as they say when in Rome, do as the Romans. You do not have to go out for dinner every night, but when you do go out for lunch or dinner see where the locals are going. Sometimes these places may look a bit

cuisine at the lowest prices. Moreover, if you are planning an inland journey make sure you have lunch and/or dinner in the area before heading home. This is an opportunity to mingle with people from the area, sample delicious Portuguese dishes while supporting both the local economy as well as your wallet as prices are noticeably lower than in coastal areas. There is a great variety of self-catering accommodation in the Algarve to choose from. Some with private pools or communal pools, located near the beach, in a sea side town or on a beautiful countryside location. Your choice depends on your preference and most likely your budget. This is where you can save hundreds of Euros and depending on the length of your stay and type of accommodation possibly over a thousand possible? It is becoming increasingly popular to book accommodation online via holiday rental portals like Booking, VRBO, and Airbnb etc. As a renter you need to be aware that the portal charges the owner a commission, which is included in the rent you pay. In addition, some portals charge the renter a service fee too. These additional costs can easily be 15% to 25% of the price you are paying to the portal. In the end, whether an accommodation is booked via a portal or direct with Happy Homes Algarve, you book exactly the same property with the same service provided by and will be on hand during your stay. When of the less desirable rooms with no view or next to an elevator. This is not the case with private, self-catering accommodation; what you see is what you get. That is the reason why many families have chosen to book their family holiday with Happy Homes Algarve and have become repeat customers. When they make a booking they rest assured that their funds are safely held in an escrow account separate from the company´s day to day operations. It is what some call a third party account. Homeowners do not have access to

with Happy Homes you have more money to spend while on holiday which supports the local economy and it will give you that uplifting feeling of righteousness knowing that you are contributing to the well-being of all the friendly faces that you will meet during your stay. In addition you should also be aware that some portals allow for dynamic pricing, if the homeowner agrees. It is a practice that airlines and hotels have had in place for many years and is now implemented by holiday rental portals. What does this mean to you? The portal suggests that if there is little demand that the price for the property is lowered for a certain period, but if there is more demand they will increase the price. Their argument to homeowners is that it will increase their rental income. Schemes like these are never for the accommodation on a portal, these properties show up on the top of the list. If you are new to the area you may not be aware of the going rate and book. So the portal who for years convinced you that they are looking after your interest is actually doing the opposite. Happy Homes Algarve has always strived to get homeowners and renters the best possible price. You can help by booking direct and spending the money you saved from not booking via a portal in the local economy during your vacation. It is a win-win situation for you and your family and doesn’t cost you a cent/penny more. It doesn’t get For us at Happy Homes Algarve booking direct is the biggest cost saving we can recommend

PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH I love this photo for a few reasons... The peace and tranquility of the shot, and also because it is one of my favourite, most iconic structures in the Algarve. As usual submitted to the Facebook page: ‘Algarve Amateur Photography group’ 32

Photographer: Peter Bunker Location of photo: Fuseta Camera used: Panasonic TZ70 with a good zoom lens which gives some nice compression of perspective. Comment: It was taken early December 2015, well out of the tourist season, and Fuseta was largely the minimum of equipment. A still day, with no noisy children running round, just lost in his thoughts. To me, it sums up the lack of pretentiousness in this lovely part of the Algarve. A hook, a line and some patience. Nothing more is needed.

a pleasant stroll across the small island, be enjoying the sand and surf of the Atlantic Here is why we think our living on the Ria Formosa is better than making our home in other parts of the Algarve when it comes to enjoying the water. In many beautiful places in the central and more built up parts of the Algarve, there are amazing beaches where enjoying the Atlantic Ocean is a central

feature. In Olhão and other parts of the Eastern Algarve, we enjoy quieter waters on our doorstep. We much prefer the quiet serenity time, we can hop on a 2 Euro ferry and enjoy Culatra Island is not just for visitors. UNICEF spokesperson James Elder went on to say: “This refugee crisis is, in terms of speed and scale, unprecedented since the Second World War and shows no signs of slowing down.” Centre Algarve in Moncarapacho, believed to be Europe’s only residential holiday centre solely for people with special needs, was, therefore, only too pleased to throw open their doors to over 20 young children from the war zone. The bewildered youngsters and their mothers – the fathers remaining in Ukraine – were soon enjoying the swimming pools and being introduced to a wide range of animals, including meerkats and exotic birds. The children, all being hosted and cared for by families and the local authority in the municipality of Loulé, face an uncertain future, but they certainly enjoyed their time at Centre Algarve.

RESTAURANTE TRADICIONAL eet Teresa and Peter O’Connor, owners of restaurant O Monte in Quinta Velha, Cabanas. This pretty little restaurant is tucked away within the small complex, next to the Jolly Sailor bar. Peter is a Golf professional at Castro Marim golf and country club. He

CAPITAL GAIN TAX ON RENTAL PROPERTIES: WHAT HAS CHANGED?

T

here are new rules applicable to the taxation of capital gains, on properties that are registered for Local Lodging activity. These new rules

some but can also be more penalising for others. It’s important to understand what the implications are and what you intend to do with your property in the future, to make the most sensible choice. Please note that the taxpayers must choose between the old and new regime and this choice can only be made in this year’s tax return (IRS). What are the main changes? When you register for a Rental License (AL) you also register your business activity out in your property, it means that you are transferring the property from your personal sphere into your business sphere. This transfer is virtual and up until 2021 could trigger capital gain taxes. For instance, if you wanted to stop the activity and there was a capital gain on the property, it meant that simply because you were stopping the activity and transferring back to your personal sphere, you could be liable for a capital gains tax. Now, this problem does not exist anymore, with the new regime there is no capital gain tax due when transferring the property from or into the personal sphere neither are there capital gain taxes when stopping the activity. Does it mean that in the old regime I would pay capital gain tax twice? Not necessarily and that is why tax planning is critical. When registering the activity and reporting the value of the virtual transfer, this should be done in a way that if the activity stops, there is no capital gain tax liability (or at least would be minimal) and this would only exist when the property was sold. But not always was this possible and this regime was more penalising for those that were residents and had for instance inherited a property. No, all those that registered for the AL business after January 2021 will only be able to choose the new rules. Also, this is only applicable to those owners that explore the properties

52

directly, in other words, when they are cumulative the property owners, the holders the rental income. If for instance the license is owned by a third party, a rental agent, or a relative, etc this is not a problem. Also, if you are not renting as a business, but declare it as rental income (paying the higher 28% tax rate) then this problem also does not exist. Is the new regime better for future CGT calculation? If for instance you stop the rental activity for 3 years before selling the property, this regime is a lot easier. Because if the property is sold 3 years after the date of cancellation of activity, capital gain is calculated as if the property was never under a business and all rules of private sale of property apply. However, if you decide to stop the activity this year and sell in 2023, then if you are resident, it should be better to do it under the old regime, because under the new regime the capital gain tax will be levied on 95% on the gain, even when you are resident. But with the old regime only 50% of the gain would be taxed in case you were resident. So which regime should I choose? The decision depends on your personal circumstances and what you intend to do with the property in the future. Are you planning to stop your activity and put your house in the market? Are you planning to become tax resident in Portugal and live in that property to later sell it? Did you make considerable refurbishments to the property during your AL activity? Depending on the answers to these and other questions, it may be better to choose one or the other regime. Examples of the CGT in the new regime: Robert had a property on the local lodging activity from 2018, until 2022. The property cost him 250.000€ and he stopped the activity so he can sell it in 2023 for 300.000€. Normally his gain would be 50.000€, however as the property was in the AL business, he will have to add 1.5% of 250k for the 5 years that he had the property in the AL business. This means that the Capital Gain is calculated not on 50.000€, but 68.780€. Robert decided that he wants to stop the activity in his name and register the activity

in his rental agent´s name. He will now pay more rental tax, but then if he decides to sell the property in the future, providing he does it later than 3 years from now, then the normal CGT rules apply and he will pay tax on 50.000€ of gain. It is important that you plan, as you can’t to ask us for assistance, but please allow some time for a reply, due to the high level of enquiries received and the tax season.

HOW E-COMMERCE AND NEW PAYMENTS TRENDS ARE ALTERING CONSUMERISM

R

ecent years have shown that the shopping habits of consumers are changing as the e-commerce market continues to boom. This has proven to be an issue for some retailers. However, many are adapting to the shifting payments landscape and new trends like digital wallets, virtual cards, and mobile payments. In many ways, the pandemic has allowed the retail industry to undergo an extensive digital transformation. Even before the pandemic, e-commerce had been a driving force for a change in the way businesses operate and, consequently, the way customers shop. However, it was the Covid-19 crisis that acted more online options. How e-commerce has changed since the pandemic Of course, lockdowns forced businesses to streamline their digital solutions. Without the ability to shop in-person, consumers shopped online at record levels. Lockdowns also made it so that contactless payments became more ubiquitous when shopping in stores. It is estimated that contactless payments rose by 20% from 2017 to 2020. Essentially, the pandemic catalysed seven years’ worth of growth in about seven weeks. It’s possible that if the pandemic hadn’t happened, new e-commerce developments wouldn’t have progressed as much as they did. Many individuals were uninterested in moving away from cash and toward digital. A sizeable portion of the population perhaps would have never gotten used to online shopping, never mind ordering their groceries online. The pandemic made this necessary and has permanently changed the behaviour and habits of many. When it comes to the airborne nature of the virus, it is obvious why the popularity of contactless payments soared during the height of the pandemic. The ability to simply tap your card rather than touch the pin pad after numerous other people became not only preferred but expected. It gave customers a sense of peace knowing that businesses were

54

taking the necessary steps to facilitate more hygienic interactions. Contactless payments also speed up the purchasing process. On average, they are 7 seconds quicker than paying with a chip and pin and 15 seconds quicker than cash. This checkout speed is vital to the success of a business, as it impacts the shopper’s desire to return. Queues can build up, and no one wants to wait longer than necessary. Evidently,

higher contactless payment limit of £100. This replaced the previous limit of £45. This worked to ease the experience and reduce friction. More payment choices = more customers Another payment choice that customers and companies alike are gravitating toward is open banking. To put it simply, open banking is like a customer transferring money directly to the parties. Merchants save money by avoiding card processing fees, which in turn increases more protection and less hassle, as they are not required to manually exchange sort codes and account details. Consumers are also paying via wearable tech, such as smart watches, and with digital wallets, like Apple Pay and Google Pay. Established digital wallets are no more expensive for businesses than accepting card payments. They allow for a positive customer experience As of now, digital wallets are one of the most preferred methods of payment within the e-commerce space. In two years, digital wallets are projected to make up more than 50% of all e-commerce payments. By this time, the global e-commerce market itself is expected to surpass £5 trillion. This is due in part to the growing number of consumers looking to spend after being restricted during the pandemic. This will massively drive e-commerce and encourage the economy’s bounce-back.

payments innovations are shaping the retail landscape. Apart from shifting to contactless transactions and wearable tech as the preferred methods of payment, the general outlook on of payments have made transactions easier and more convenient for customers. Additionally, as more sensitive information is stored digitally, transactions become more secure. This all contributes to the general trust the consumer has with the company they are choosing to buy from. Forming a sense of trust with their customers allows businesses to thrive because it establishes them as a competitor. In fact, in many cases, retailers will not be able experiences. Frictionless payments are required now, whether the customer is shopping in person or online. According to research from Barclaycard, online shopping baskets worth billions of pounds are often abandoned if the payment process involves hiccups. Namely, if the shipping includes delivery fees, the customer’s chosen payment method is unavailable, or there are cyber-security concerns. If brands want an advantage in the customer payments experience, they must innovate and implement frictionless payments. Experts say this is critical for the success of the company. The structural change digital payment innovations have had on e-commerce and consumerism in general has irrevocably altered the way people shop. It has also made them both more digitally savvy and more aware of all the options available to them. This will have and will provide exciting new opportunities for investors. As always, it is key to consult with an expert before making investment decisions. THE INNER CHILD

life we learn who we are, how we are, what we deserve, what place we occupy in the world, how to relate to others, codes of values and beliefs, what the modes of behavior are, etc. Almost everything we learn is from the lives. Parents, teachers, grandparents, whoever they may be, the people we learned this from, are the ones who took care of us in our infancy. And whatever they did, we learned how to do it that way. So why should we look carefully and treat our inner child gently? Because she/he has a great impact on our adult life. As adults, something happens that connects us with an internal memory, for example during a bad experience. All the automatism, recorded at the moment that the experience from which we learned occurred, is activated. When the automatism activates, we lose the ability to manage the present in a real way; we lose control of ourselves (thoughts, behavior, reactions, etc.). We lose control of our real life and we enter a recorded fantasy from our past and this inner child that recorded that memory is the one who takes over the life of the adult at that point in time. Automatism makes us apply something from the past to the present, and in most cases, it is Misaligned. It does not correspond to a correct management of the present and makes us dysfunctional. This dysfunctionality and loss of control leads us to feel incapable, frustrated, ashamed, etc. It is a friction window and permanent struggle with oneself which can lead to lowering our self-esteem and personal security. Understanding the inner child is a process of deep self-knowledge, understanding of the past, emotional management training and reconciliation with ourselves. The objective of this understanding is to fully integrate who we are, deactivate the automatisms recorded the present of adult life; During infancy, humans, are the species that depend on their parents for the longest period. The dependency level is 100% and so the level of vulnerability is extremely high. In each of the stages childhood there are

56

be able to develop. adequate construction of that being and all

If these needs are not covered in the right order and time, the child will look for his own way of compensating for what is missing. For example: if you as a child need the self"You’re useless, clumsy, you never know to be safe, possibly by remaining inactive or hidden, so as not to be afraid of what others will say and think about you. If your caregivers have not seen you as adequate and capable, you yourself will not feel like you are. Children build their self-image and selfesteem through what caregivers tell them and they say about them. They cannot conceive that their caregivers would be wrong. Be aware: all we do as parents can make the their future adulthood. Childhood consists of four main developmental stages. Erik Erikson was an ego psychologist who developed one of the most popular and to Erikson´s theory, each stage is the result of a personal crisis, mainly with the parents, but also with peers or teachers. It understands the crisis not as a catastrophic event, but as a moment in which the vulnerability increased. It is a transition. Erikson proposes that the result of each crisis is an Ego Force, and he understands that the childhood is healthy if the four forces of the ego are achieved. The 4 forces of the ego are the following: Hope: it is the result of having a feeling of

Willpower: this is the result of feeling autonomous and capable instead of feeling doubt or ashamed of himself at the time of investigating and taking new steps. Purpose: it is the feeling of initiative over the fear or guilt of taking action. Competence: it is the feeling of strength, ability and capacity above feelings of inferiority or uncertainty.

When these forces are in the child, he will be able to achieve the four basic and essential powers for full and healthy development: The power of the Self; The power of Doing; The power of Identity; The power to be Fit; All of them develop in childhood based on the relationship with parents, and are necessary throughout life to develop and adapt to new stages. In order to fully develop each of these forces and powers, it is necessary to have grown up among adults, with their own healthy, balanced internal world and that adults have been present, and aware, during the upbringing instilling security, love and strength. We know and live realities in which on many occasions the results of upbringing led by less healthy adults, creating damaged children of such a balanced task. The degree of injury to the inner child of adults educator and caregiver. So dear reader, are you nurturing your Inner Child? WHAT MAKES US HAPPY? ´Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for´. Joseph Addison Farah Naz

S

ometimes, it seems we are chasing happiness as if it

actualization. Think about starving artists like Rembrandt or Van Gogh. Van Gogh achieved

and then once caught, it If you felt happy when you

you are living for that winning feeling, over and over. Maybe, a parent told you happiness was to be found in that one unique love, we might have noticed that happiness came to those around us through sought-after purchases, or from holidays and then, we too, live our own lives in this material way. Or you might have felt so happy by the attention you got for that pretty face – and so happiness lies in the upkeep of personal beauty. Often, we without asking if this is what will actually make us happy. While many psychologists throughout the ages have asked what causes illness, Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist, asked instead, ‘what makes us happy? In his 1943 paper, he proposed that happiness;

that each stage of need has to be met before you can move to the next stage. According to Maslow, once we reach the stage of self-actualization, we are ready to grow and evolve. When we are growing and evolving - (don´t forget according to Charles we are in a state of happiness. “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” - Aristotle Maslow also said that only 2% of people Since Maslow´s theory, many other theories of happiness have been posited, and most interesting, is that, the needs are still regarded as key to happiness, just not necessarily in the pyramidal order that Maslow insisted upon. His ´Hierarchy of Needs´ presumes you moment by identifying their unmet need. So,

and could not be intimate. But we know that this is not the case, not for the millions who starve and still are more than capable of the higher levels on his pyramid including self-

www.eastalgarvemag.com

But there is something in the needs, there is something in achieving meaning and we all know too well that, ´Happiness is an inside job´. We have needs as humans and they – and we are primed to get them met. But, sometimes because of experiences, more often early in life, we lose connection with this instinct and we fail to get our needs met. And, it is at this point things can go wrong for us. practitioner takes with their clients to identify an absence of happiness or cause of depressive feelings or anxiety, is to look for unmet needs. More recent psychological research accepts that all people, everywhere, to varying degrees, and in no particular order, have a need: to give and receive attention to feel safe and secure to heed the mind–body connection to have a sense of purpose and meaning to feel a sense of connection to to be stretched, to be creative, and to face manageable challenges to experience intimacy to feel a sense of control to feel a sense of status; to feel valued, appreciated, and respected Similar to Maslow, the belief is that when we meet these needs we fundamentally become happy and healthy. And conversely, where we

feelings. So, if you are in a relationship without intimacy you may feel depressed or anxious alcoholic. If you have a feeling of lack of control you may start experiencing panic attacks or anger outbursts. If you don´t feel appreciated your self-esteem might be very low. So, how can we get these needs met in order to have a true sense of happiness? Here are some ways: 1. Develop a balanced social life. Improve your social and interpersonal skills - too often, we think we are better at socializing than we actually are - we might be too busy trying to make ourselves feel good by trying to impress or being right, or competitiveness. Learn how

to truly listen to others, rather than just waiting

2. Look after your body. Read more about nutrition, exercise, quit the junk food and drinks, change your sleep patterns – poor physical health leads to poor psychological 3. Create goals and a vision in life. When we work towards something we feel hopeful and life has meaning – without this we can start having anxious thoughts instead. 4. Do something for your community, a sense of contributing adds to our sense of purpose and meaning. Research shows that when we focus on others our immune system improves. 5. Push yourself to learn or do something new and also think about creativity – pick up an old hobby or start a new one. Go to an exhibition and appreciate beauty in art. 6. We all need intimate contact – make sure to have a date with your partner or see a close friend at least once a week. 7. Focus on one thing that is in your external or internal control once a week – like sport, exercise, or meditation. 8. We need to feel important – do something for others. 9. Consider if you feel unsafe and insecure and if this feeling is arising from the past or whether you need to change something in the present? Practice calm and you will feel less afraid. If there was insecurity in the past, analyse this. Remember, that when these needs are not met, we will subconsciously try to get them met in a not-so-healthy way. But when we seek to actively meet the needs in a healthy way, we are moving into a sustainable, state of happiness that will help us weather the storms that are the inevitable part of life. If you look carefully, happiness is in your hands. Farah Naz is a UK trained Psychotherapist of more than 30 years, and is a Clinical Hypnotherapist, with a special interest in neuroscience. LOSE WEIGHT, IMPROVE ENERGY AND REDUCE JOINT PAIN!

hat do losing weight, improving energy, and reducing joint pain have in common? They are potentially all resolved by what you eat and how you manage your life. It’s really that simple. So why do so many of us struggle? Some nutritionists swear by calorie counting (that’s so last year, darling), whilst others claim that a keto diet is the one and only route to improving your overall health. A keto diet relies on high fat foods with a very low carbohydrate (carb) intake and small mix of proteins. The approximate ratios are 75% fats, 20% protein and 10% carbs. It seems obvious that a reduced calorie intake will lower your weight – or does it? I recall trying to calorie count in my younger days and invested in various pocketbooks which I referred to before I put anything into my mouth. I kept a running total of how many calories I’d consumed as each day progressed and calculated if I had enough left for a treat of some kind as a reward. What a silly bunny I was. Not just me though. Millions of other women were also mesmerised and taken in by the ingenious marketing methods of the popular diet clubs and groups that sprung up overnight. Where are they now, I wonder? According to a study published in The Lancet medical journal in August 2020 https://pubmed. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32238384/ none of the 14 loss or improved cardiovascular health after 12 months. Initially, improvements were visible but were unsustainable in the longer term. The Rainbow Diet Consuming a healthy balance of nutritious colourful food is my recommendation. The far as I am concerned and how I managed to beat stage IV cancer in 2015 when I was given less than 12 months to live and how I prepared for a mastectomy in 2009. In May 2009, my body mass index (BMI) was 34. To have a better chance of surviving the radical 8-hour surgery scheduled for July 2009, my surgeon explained that I should lose weight and reduce my BMI to at least 30. The BMI measurement provides an indication of whether we are a healthy weight, although doesn’t work in the same way for athletes.

58

My choice was to follow an organic mix of plant-based colourful foods, freshly prepared for each meal. I juiced like a Ninja and created 4-5 fresh vegetable juices daily. I no longer juice and have an easier method to gain similar levels of nutrition into my body. Do contact me if you’d like to know how I manage this. This method has provided an additional bonus in that I no longer wear previously I wore varifocals for 40 years. The Rainbow Diet, so named because the foods on your plate should be multicoloured, like a rainbow, minimises risk of cancer and aids cardiovascular health as proven by multiple studies. The Rainbow Diet book by Chris Woollams is a great starting point if you’d like to know more https://www.canceractive.com/article/ The-Rainbow-Diet-Book-to-prevent-and-

blood test at home plus a hair analysis so that we can assess what exactly is going on inside the body and how best to support it. In this way, there’s no need for guesswork and wasting money on supplements which could actually be making matters worse. For example, following general advice to take more magnesium or calcium can be catastrophic for some people. Magnesium is linked to depression and fatigue and calcium overload can make bones snap, not stronger. However, some generalisations do work and here is my little ‘go to’ list which I heartily recommend to you:mucous forming plus is full of medications given to the poor cows

Gardens

A beginners guide to gardening in Portugal We were contacted by Erika who is planning to move to Portugal from Sweden in the next month or so. With little gardening experience, she asked for some tips on where to start with her new garden in the Algarve.

P

ortugal is one of the best countries where you can enjoy so many outdoor activities. One of the major reasons why people move permanently to Portugal is to enjoy the long warm summer. Due to the hot climate, you will spend most of your time outside your house. As a apartments usually have a balcony where you can enjoy the outdoor life. However, if you love gardening, it might be a bit

60

challenging due to the hot climate. In this article, we shall share some gardening tips that will give you the best results in Portugal. Succulent plants – Aloe and cacti are very popular in Portugal. The good thing about these plants is that high temperatures or lack of water does

2

referred to as succulent because they are able to retain water in hot climates. Succulent is a Latin word where “Sucus” means juice. These types of plants are great because they are easy to maintain.

that do well in Portugal. Be aware of pests – You need to use a special type of nets that will keep wild animals and birds away from your garden. Nets don’t have a great appearance on

Edible garden – Portugal is a great place you can settle permanently if you love planting, pruning and digging. Unlike other places like the UK or other places in North Europe, in Portugal you will have a good chance to try growing some vegetables and fruits you may have never grown before. For example, melons,

keeping your vegetables and fruits safe. Irrigation – Even if you have a small garden or terrace where you are planning to grow some plants, you need to think about how you will be doing irrigation during summer. South Lisbon is one of the areas where it rarely rains. However, there are many electronic irrigation systems you should use but if you are on a tight budget, manual pipes will also be great. Whichever method you use, you must ensure that it is

bills. Grass – Verdant landscapes are so abundant in the northern part of Portugal because there is enough rainfall. As a result, it is easier to maintain a lawn than it is in the southern part of Portugal where maintaining a green lawn throughout the year is not easy. Likewise, many gardens and patios in the Algarve contain paving or shingle. You can consider planting leafy and colourful plants to make your garden more attractive. Trying to maintain your grass in the southern part will not be possible unless you are planting on a communal land which will be a bit expensive to maintain. Conclusion If you love gardening and you have been planning to relocate to Portugal, those are among the things you should try if you love gardening. Despite the fact that the place is a bit hot especially during summer, you can still enjoy growing some plants.
