'MARK OV' A GENIUS We meet the incredible Roman Markov, a Ukranian artist and long term resident of Faro

A

mazed by the small exhibition we found in the Real Marina Hotel and Spa in Olhão (located left of the reception), we set out to locate and discover more about this very talented painter. It was not an easy feat as our subject is not one to show off or think grand things about himself, ‘humble’ is the word that comes to mind. He told us he just loves to paint. Roman Markov originally from the Ukraine moved to Portugal some 20 years ago and after 2 years he met his wife, also a Ukrainian native and they now have the most precious and cute little girl. He is a real family man. In the Ukraine, Roman painted from a very early age,

10

always enjoying the ability to create something beautiful from nothing but the imagination. Later he studied and trained as an art teacher, he taught woodwork and ceramic craft classes to his young students. We asked if painting ran in the family, Roman laughed a little and told us it did not, his father did paint a tiny amount, but spent his time working as a detective. What we love about the paintings Roman does is the variety in styles, he explains that he is constantly developing what he does and currently is enjoying creating playful pieces from his imagination, such as the one we have featured to adorn the cover of this month’s magazine. He says this type of work is a challenge as it is not based on a photo or real-life scene. It takes more

Places

effort and time to create these images and find the shapes that compliment the subject, rather than detract from the focal point. Roman uses Acrylic and Oils on canvas as his medium, he paints everyday, but takes a break on Saturdays. Most paintings are of the East Algarve and are central to the beaches and harbours. In fact, several of his paintings include old boats that have vanished from existence, yet still captured on his canvases. What astounds us the most, are the low prices he charges for his artwork, his smaller pieces start at €25. It is easy to see how his modest nature is reflected back in the small prices he charges. We asked why he does not charge more for his paintings, the answer was simply that he wants his artwork to be affordable for all, not just the elite and those with deep pockets. You can find a display of his artwork in Artina in Tavira, Real Marina Hotel and Spa in Olhão, Moldular in Faro and he is often in Loulé on the market. In August there will be an additional exhibition in Albufeira. The best way to contact Roman is through his Facebook page, @roman.markov His website boasts much of his work and is also well worth a visit: www.romanmarkov.com

t's a Wednesday morning in Olhão, the sun is out, people are busy and there is that distinct feel of a bustling city. We make our way towards the market, a market different from the one down by the Ria front. Away from the chaos, the shoulder to shoulder throngs of people moving as a collective up and down aisles, today, we traded this charming experience for one behind the doors of Re-Criativa, an oasis of peace, calm, space and stalls filled with goods awaits us in the quaint courtyard tucked away in rear of the building. We find an abundance of locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs, unique handicrafts, delicious cakes, chocolates and sweet treats as well as samosas and other delicacies, handmade soaps, honeys, olive oils, vegan salami, chorizo and much much more. Lucky us, we were able to buy tasty hand-made birthday treats to surprise a special friend. This market with its organic, local and genuinely special goods is open each Wednesday from 10:00 - 14:00. MILITARY PRECISION

From Military to Barber in Fuseta, Pedro Teixeira has a bright future!

W

e meet Pedro Teixeira, a 30 year old barber in Fuseta, originally from Guimaraes, but grew up in Felgueiras, Porto. He moved to the Algarve after visiting his brother who lives here, during that time he visited the studio to have his hair cut. He loved the style and the whole experience, so asked his barber about the possibility of learning from him as an apprentice. After some persuading, he eventually agreed. Pedro grabbed the opportunity with both hands and moved to the Algarve. Pedro spent 7 years working for the military during which time he used to cut his comrades hair, this is where he initially gained his interest for cutting hair and his passion grew from there. He only officially started working as a barber in December 2022. After his military service, he stepped into the world of private security and at the same time also competed as a bodybuilder in Men's Physique on a National and International level. Currently he still works as a private security guard, but has reduced his hours and is

16

dedicating most of his time to being a barber. This decision came naturally as the passion for cutting hair grew. Pedro says "I greatly appreciate the relationships created with my clients, its a very rewarding job. The time spent so close to the client enables you to, over time, become friends and not just clients. I'm quite a perfectionist, I’ve always been this way, but competing in bodybuilding shows you the full potential of the human body and the extreme detail in presenting yourself perfectly. I take this drive for perfection into my job as a barber in hopes to give my clients an enjoyable experience and surprise them with the quality of the outcome". His apprenticeship is under his 'mentor' Andre Cordeiro, who is considered the best barber when it comes to “Fades” in the Algarve. Andre is training Pedro to produce the same very high standard. Asked about his motivation, Pedro says "My motivation comes from a few different avenues, of course I have a drive to create a fruitful career in this business, which is one of them, but a large part of my motivation has also come from people who doubted me and put pressure on me not to go into this industry by saying that I wouldn’t make money working

as a barber. In such a small amount of time I am already proving them wrong. I have proved myself and shown that I am capable of being a successful barber, something I enjoy doing, a gratifying job particularly as being barbers, we have a new experience with every client, a new challenge. It’s not a monotonous job, there’s a lot of diversity and when you enjoy what you do you never really work a day in your life". Pedro's goal as a barber is to challenge other professionals in the area by bringing a high quality standard of work, but his main focus is to make sure that every client walks out the door happy with the experience and with the end result. He is extremely proud of his work, and very grateful to his team: mentor Andre Cordeiro, Tiago Marques and Ivan Barbosa and also to his clients who 'put their trust in me to deliver a fresh look every time they sit in my chair'. It was a real pleasure to meet Pedro, and we wish him great success in his new career. Contact: Tel 918 411 373 or message on instagram @officialpedroflex Feel free to stop by the studio: Rua Ten. History

WE WILL NOT FORGET THEM

E

ighty years ago two young Allied airmen, Sergeant Geoffrey Avern, 27, of the Royal Australian Air Force and his 21 year-old navigator/ observer Sergeant Philip Crossan of the RAF lost their lives when the Bristol Beaufighter they were flying from Cornwall to Gibraltar crashed near Gibraleón north of Huelva. In last month’s East Algarve Magazine I told their story and now I am very privileged to record the Ceremony of Honour held at the British Cemetery on the 19th April. Originally, my wife and I had planned to lay flowers on their neglected graves in the overgrown and mostly forgotten cemetery adjoining the immaculately maintained Nuestra Señora de la Soledad Catholic

20

By Chris Wright Cemetery. It is here that the grave of Glyndwr Michael, as featured in Operation Mincemeat, can be found. The film - featuring Colin Firth, Kelly Macdonald, Matthew Macfadyen, Penelope Wilton and Jason Isaacs – is scheduled to open in Portugal on 12th May. A message had been sent to the Australian Embassy in Madrid informing them that we would be honouring one of their war dead. Within hours a response had been received from Captain Bruce Legge, Defence Attaché which set in motion a chain-of-events that lead to the moving and solemn Ceremony of Honour. Chris Wright added, “I can honestly say that the positive and prompt response from the Australian Defence Attaché motivated me to make contact with Huelva resident Gladys Mendez Naylor, whose grandfather

had been buried in the cemetery.” Gladys' mother, Dona Isabel Naylor de Méndez, for many years tended the graves and was awarded the MBE by HM Queen Elizabeth II. If the two airmen were to be suitably honoured then a major clear-up of the area surrounding the graves was of paramount importance. Permission to undertake the work was obtained from Bishop Carlos López Lozano of the Reformed Episcopal Church in Madrid who has ultimate responsibility for the Cemetery. A group of volunteers, ‘The Tavira Twelve’ was recruited and descended on the cemetery ten days before the event where they were joined by Juan Conde, a local police officer, whose father had lived near the crash site. After several hours of intense labour the strimmers, pressure washer, rakes,

litter pickers and secateurs had done their job in taming the undergrowth and smartening up the Commonwealth War Graves. Guests at the Ceremony on the 19th of April included Captain Bruce Legge, Australian Defence Attaché Southern Europe; Captain Ian Clarke RN, United Kingdom Defence Attaché; Colin Hearn, Stephen Bland and Trevor Morgan of the Royal British Legion, Portugal Branch; Gabriel Cruz, Mayor of Huelva; councilors Francisco Baluffo and Daniel Mantero, Huelva Department of Tourism and Culture; Squadron Leader David Tucker and Sub Lt RNR Helena McFeeley, British Embassy Madrid; María Antonia Peña, rector of the University of Huelva; Consuelo Dominguez, Professor at the Huelva University and author of a book about the British

cemeteries of the province of Huelva. Also in attendance were a bugler and drummer from Banda de Cornetas y Tambores La Humildad. The proceedings started with Colin Hearn, Royal British Legion, reading a poem The Sky’s The Limit. The gathering of some forty guests was then addressed by Capt Bruce Legge before Gladys Mendez Naylor spoke of the importance of maintaining the cemetery. The Mayor of Huelva, Gabriel Cruz, said that in conjunction with the Episcopal Church, there are plans to renovate the cemetery in twelve months. The Laying of Wreaths and Flowers was followed by Capt Ian Clarke reading the Ode of Remembrance. The Last Post, a minute’s silence and the playing of the national anthems of Spain, Australia and Great Britain concluded proceedings.

There are numerous other graves in the cemetery including those of the wife and young children of Scotsman Doctor William Alexander Mackay who founded a sports club for Rio Tinto mine workers. It was officially established as Recreativo de Huelva in 1889 and the club is now recognised as Spain's oldest football club. In closing, Chris Wright said, “I was humbled and proud that so many people saw fit to honour these two young men, who like so many young Ukrainians, have laid down their lives in the name of freedom. We owe them a great debt of gratitude”. It is hoped that a small steering group will be formed to ensure that the positive outcome from the Ceremony of Honour will be maintained well into the future.

All you need to know, by property expert Robert Bijker

E

ver since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the market has not looked back and we are currently experiencing one of the strongest property sale periods in our company's 25 year history. Demand for high quality properties far outnumbers the supply, putting upward pressure on property prices. Furthermore, inflation and a labour shortage have pushed up prices of newly built properties in the Eastern Algarve to previously unheard-of levels, and they are selling. It goes without saying that every homeowner wants the best possible outcome when selling their property but even in the best of circumstances, trying to hold out for the highest possible price can cause more harm than good. It is critical to keep your property from becoming a stale listing. If you're thinking about selling your home, it is important to get it right from the start. Make sure you select an agent with good knowledge of the local market. Not all real estate agents work full-time in property sales. There are quite a few who are in property sales in addition to another full-time job. This is not an ideal situation for you because the days of amateurs selling property successfully are long gone. When determining the asking price, you should compare similar properties that have sold recently and/or are currently on the market. This is easier in residential areas where there are similar properties than in the countryside where there are more variations to consider such as design, location and differences in the quality of construction. The illustrated photo above the article is a good example of how not to sell your property. This apartment is located in a highly desirable residential area in Tavira, called Quinta de

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Caracol on Rua Rotary Internacional. Over a period of 14 years our company has sold many properties here, the last one we sold within a month at the end of April. Another apartment was sold 6 weeks ago. In other words, properties are moving in this area. The apartment in the photo has been on the market for 5 months and had a price reduction 2 months ago of 7%, yet it is still overpriced in the current market by approx. 10%. There may be a shortage of supply, but buyers are not foolish. In the meantime the ‘for sale’ sign of the agency was damaged by a storm 5 weeks ago and broken in two. It is obvious that the listing agent and agency have lost interest and had no viewings for quite some time, otherwise the broken sign would have been noticed and replaced or removed. As a homeowner you should avoid a situation like this at all costs. Another price reduction will no longer cut it. It needs a new start, an accurate asking price with limited room for negotiation, professional photography and an equally professional write up. There is no definition of time for a property listing to go stale. It depends on the number of properties that are moving in a particular area. Here are some guidelines to avoid a stale listing: -Understand the market value of your property by comparison -Select a local agency with experienced local agents

-Check with the agent if your price expectation is realistic, providing the agent is knowledgeable -Select an agent on experience and full time commitment -Listen to buyer feedback after viewings We are not in business to bad mouth other agencies and salespeople, but we felt this is such a good real time example of a stale listing that we wanted to share it with you. It is unclear whether the property listing was mispriced by the listing agent/agency or the owner; either way, the outcome is negative for everyone involved. If you are interested in putting your property on the market we would like to get in contact with you. Our real estate consultants are happy to meet and advise you on marketing and market value in order to achieve your goal. Y our personal

Chef

Introducing Chef Michael from "Chef Creations with a twist", happy to serve you wherever you may be. Michael provides the ultimate personal chef service whether cooked at your home or his (he delivers too)

C

hef Michael greets us with a big smile, our host and personal cook is famous for his canapés. We are presented with creamy goat's cheese on crispy bruschetta, each topped with a semi sundried cherry tomato and basil pesto, next is skewered sweet peppered pork, followed by the lightest and flakiest tempura fried prawns, served with a splash of fresh lemon juice. Presentation, something I myself struggle with immensely, is picture perfect. Luckily, there is more in store for us, barbecued rack of ribs in the stickiest and most wonderfully balanced sauce follows the canapés. For our dessert, the most gorgeous decadent brownies, lightly stencilled with powdered sugar forming the shapes of cutlery. Michael, aged 40, is versatile and blends into whatever is needed in any situation. He likes to roll with what life gives him. Born in the UK, raised in South Africa from the age of 6 months, Michael developed a love for cooking and the various tastes he experienced while his parents moved from place to place around South Africa. He recalls cooking braais at the age of 11. Having been formally trained as a chef and awarded a scholarship by Compass Group, the largest contract food company in the world, Chef Michael knows the industry well. The cheffing business can be quite stressful, Chef Michael muses during our interview, after 23 years of being in the kitchen, he

explains that when it is a passion and a love, it becomes different. The compliments become the reward, replacing the drive for monetary success. His background is impressive, after working with Compass, he joined the Patak group, earning the title employee of year. He has worked for private catering companies, some of the largest and most successful in the UK such as catering company With a Twist. He has worked alongside restaurant owners to turn their businesses around to be successful, profitable and most importantly having satisfied customers, he has catered to small parties as well as up to 1200 persons. Having made his way to the Algarve, now Chef Michael wants to concentrate on quality, equality, affordability and creativity in all senses of the word, meaning also being creative when budgets are small. He offers a food delivery service to those unable, too compromised or just don’t fancy cooking for themselves, such as a client of his that has MS. He provides a balanced, tasty, fancy and professional looking lunch and dinner to her doorstep daily, with warming/heating instructions for both the oven and microwave. Other clients have requested burgers, chips and milkshakes. Unlike many services where booking a day

38

www.eastalgarvemag.com

or two in advance is required, Chef Michael is able to provide and cater to your wishes within just a few hours. A sample of some of the comfort foods… southern fried chicken with crispy onion rings, boerewors and biltong, to Friday night fish, chips and mushy peas, or perhaps you fancy an Irish breakfast for Sunday brunch complete with black and white puddings, or maybe a healthy Thai or Chinese cuisine delivered to your door. The options are endless as are the fillings, meat, no meat, fish, sea food, vegetarian and even the infamously marginalised vegan will be found with an abundance of choice. Chef Michael shares with us that he is keen to develop his canapés and hosting at locations service. Currently able to cook for and cater from 1 to 50 persons, he will come your home or chosen location, all food prepped and ready to be cooked. After serving you and your guests he will leave your kitchen in an immaculate state, striving to have it better and tidier than before he arrived. Again, this is not a service solely for the rich and famous, it is the idea to adapt to everyone's budget and everyone's wishes. Call to schedule a meeting and discuss the bountiful options and solutions available. Contacts: Tel +351 910 270 379 Email: creationchef9@gmail.com

THEN OLHÃO

FOUND US... ... and we weren't even looking! Hank and Carina's story of how they came to live in and love Olhão

W

elcome to our monthly column celebrating Olhão. After exploring Portugal top to bottom from Braga to Tavira enjoying so many coastal and inland locations in our RV, we decided Olhão was the place to buy our home to celebrate our “golden years”. Olhão was not on our radar at first. In fact, the discovery of Eastern Algarve was a pleasant surprise with the scale of development so much less than areas to the west. A chance winter rental introduced us to Olhão, a place we quickly found attractive for many reasons. “Walkability” is, above all, a main highlight and each month we will introduce you to places only steps away from our front door. We hope you will enjoy our column! AUKAI... OLHÃO’S “HAWAIIAN” OUTRIGGER EXPERIENCE. As much as we enjoy our walks every day here, we also love the part we can’t walk on, the stunningly calm and beautiful Ria Formosa waters. One day last fall, we noticed something new. Located right next to the marina loading ramp inside the Island View complex, two Hawaiian

40

style outrigger canoes appeared. Soon after that one morning, I watched as a crew of six, guided by owner Caio Mathias, carried one of those canoes down the boat ramp and silently paddled away into the Ria Formosa waters. What a way to travel! I decided to enlist for a morning tour. Caio says they launch several mornings every week. Paddlers do a bit of prep before heading out for the trip. This “Canoa Havaiana” local club is joined by sister clubs in Porto and near Lisbon. Together they silently challenge each other in friendly competition with another Algarve club to be located further west joining the fun soon. I signed up on the Aukai website (www. aukaivaa.com). They offer single classes and group tours and they declare the boats are stable and easy to paddle. The smiles on the faces of returning paddlers suggests this is a great way to enjoy being on the water. When I shot the photo of Caio returning from a recent Saturday morning tour, he exclaimed, “I love being in the water!” I’m pretty sure he meant “on” the water so I will hopefully soon enjoy my own tour with him soon paddling along the quiet and beautiful Ria Formosa waters..

PSST! Here is an experience many small business people would recognise and remember well. It is this...the people closest to you are suggesting you are crazy. This usually occurs when what you are suggesting for your future business is something untried like - Psst! Okay, so start with a vehicle that is cute as a button, but destined to pretty much stay in one place, then get enough people to come by for coffee and croissants so that maybe, just maybe, your loved ones will gradually nod with their approval. Telma Cristina Afonso Amaro has been serving her customers here in Olhão from that non moving vehicle for almost 4 years and she considers herself lucky. Like so many local people trying to forge a living in a tourist based economy, the 4 month high season meant much of each year for her was spent waiting for work to return. Not any more. Psst!, located on the esplanade that fronts the marina across from the Real Marina 5 star hotel, may not be open every day all year, but if the weather is reasonable, which it so often is, you’ll also feel lucky to be enjoying coffee and a fresh croissant in the sunshine. As a bonus, you’ll be gazing out to the Olhão

www.eastalgarvemag.com

marina with all the fancy boats and maybe dreaming of commanding your own vessel towards the next port of call! Ahoy matey! Or... you can just settle down, be grateful for good health and sunshine, and calmly relax while enjoying the beautiful view. Why worry about maintaining your fancy yacht when the cost of just one month of berth fees will get you all the local Ria Formosa tours you could hope for from the row of trip vendors right next door! Psst! enjoys a full crowd most days. Be patient and know Telma adds tables if there are any left in the back. Cash please...

For our full introduction, see our first column online in the December 2021 issue. www.eastalgarvemag.com Fine Print – Questions or Comments? Write to us at hankryan2003@yahoo.com We choose to focus on businesses here in Olhão where we have actually been customers first. Any future advertising from these businesses that supports the East Algarve Magazine is purely coincidental :-)

BAD ADVICE...

Ask the

Expat T

Not all advice is good and not all people are as genuine as you may think. Enjoy our 'bad advice' column from the expert we have all met, know and love... the Expat.

his month we are speaking to a 'lifestyle coach' who is seeking to address the role of alcohol and diagnosis in the Expat community and our relation to ourselves. Brandi Whine, describes herself without the orthodoxy of having to believe in the twelve steps or God in the AA. "I'd drink that bastard under the table'', she quips. She considers her approach as a psychodramatic approach to alcohol in her infamous 'group therapy' sessions. She also moonlights as a pharmaceutical seller for Pfissahar, so if her clients get distressed she can prescribe them all sorts of highly addictive opioids like Fentanyl or what she calls uppers like Adderall. If you are unable to sleep she might prescribe you a highly addictive sleeping drug like Zolipdem or antianxiety drugs like Xanax. She recommends you wash that down with a shot, like Valley of the Dolls, she says 'medication works faster with liquor'. She is also the face of her own brand of Algarvian Cactus Tequila, and she may have slipped some extra Peruvian Torch extract and what she described as a 'spirit journey' at 50% volume. Expat: It is wonderful to meet you, Brandi. Your group therapy sessions are infamous here in the East Algarve! It seems few survive? Why do you think it is, many ExPats struggle with alcohol? Brandi: 'Oh darling, they would say they don't, but they struggle with everything down here! It is like its very own soap opera. I really just run the sessions for observational purposes and to make my sales commission! They struggle because…? Well there are too many alpha personalities, people wanting to have fun, those awful boring lockdowns, then they get upset about something stupid they've done! I say relax, take another shot of Brandy Wine! Can you hack my juice? Expat: And the group therapy…? Brandi (interrupt): It can get quite salty in our sessions, which is why alcohol is a perfect vehicle for personal development! It acts like a lubricant. It helps people sort their

42

own social order and standing, but instead of throwing fists we use other methods! It's like when in the 1960s they used LSD for therapy sessions, but I have no access to a dealer, else I'd be plugging that too! Expat: Your methods and approach are causing quite a stir! Can you highlight a few? Brandi: As most don't identify as having a big problem, we always start a group with, 'you are an alcoholic, but I am not game' which really puts the cat amongst the pigeons. It is a gossip classic for our clientele and really gets the accusations rolling! We also like to sort people into categories. The richest, the poorest. The one with the best credentials. The prettiest, the ugliest. The most moral and pious! Who should be the serving class and the masters? That sort of thing that keeps a small community ever fluid with dynamic psychodrama. After the process of sorting group dynamics. I immediately after a discussion on philosophy, the meaning of life, Nietzsche, the future of the world, nihilism, morality, hedonism and what's it even all mean? (Laughs, whispering something inaudible). At that time of even greater confusion, it is always a great interval for my Pfissahar sales! Especially for the legally adhering ones. They might get off the train at this point, so to speak. See ya! Don't let the door slam on your… (Cackles). We all know in the alcohol and pharmaceutical industry, it is profitable for everyone to have a diagnosis, so if there isn't one, I tend to make one up and send the losers who can't hack it off with a prescription! If they are weeping, I say they can come to my Detox services at The Algarve Priory and I will prescribe them more or something else, much stronger! It's a five star facility and we have ex-celebrity doctors in hiding who'll basically prescribe anything and our rooms are like a glitzy 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' just with more modern interventions! Expat: And for those who stay on your coaching train? Brandi: Oh they had better buckle up for the crazy train! Choo choo! Brandi takes another shot of her tequila and

spits, 'this is some good crazy fire, like life really'... 'Anyway where were we'? 'Would you like a shot'!? Expat: 'Thanks but not right now. You were describing your next unique methods... Brandi: 'Oh certainly. (She hammers another shot and wipes the drawl from her puckered mouth and burps). The next round is a game of 'accusations' and we see how people cope when they are drunk with real-life situations. Our bouncers act like the Springer Show. That is important, because we next bring out the inflatable Sumo suits for ExPat slam dunk scream therapy and jousting. They can return the next day to mop out any unfortunate spillages. The next day we commence with a shame session. At this point it is fortuitous to ask, 'do you want to keep on drinking after all the mess and drama from the day before. I encourage them to say 'yes please'! That is when I bring out Tequila and we commence with what I call 'hair of the dog' drunken' yoga. At this point, when my friend Beany runs the class, I go and raid the drinks and medical cupboard. Expat: This all seems bizarre and utterly pointless. What is the point of it? Brandi: It is essential really and about the journey of life. I like to question participants, what is the difference between being sober or drunk really? What is addiction? Everyone is addicted to something surely? Just some have better taste! After a group hypnosis session, it is always fruitful to ask for donations and have another shot. Why? What else should we be doing? Playing kumbaya? And where would the fun in that be? If anything is amiss, I can always pull out my diagnosis book, because there's always a pill for you! Anyway, enough chatter. Go on, have another drink! Just a little one. That's right.

ILL DISCIPLINE PROVES COSTLY Brought to you by Chris Wright

triving to gain promotion from the Campeonato de Portugal to Liga 3 would now appear to be beyond Olhanense’s reach following three consecutive defeats. The rot set in during the 0-0 draw at Pêro Pinheiro (Sintra) in the second game of the ten match series. Influential senior players Carlitos and João Silva were sent-off and manager Carlo Perrone, who has subsequently left the club, was also dismissed by the referee. 32

year-old Jorge Viegas, who for the last three seasons had been part of the first team staff, is now in charge until the end of the season. Carlitos and Silva were suspended for the home game against GD Fontinhas (Azores) and goals in the 5th minute and 61st minute secured victory for the islanders. A subpar performance at home against Moncarapachense on Easter Saturday resulted in another 0-2 defeat with goals from Nuno Silva (80′) and Gabriel (90′) rewarding their local rivals. The trip to Sertanense was

a ‘must win’ scenario, but a goal down after just five minutes and a player short after seventeen minutes ruined any chance of a positive result. Djoulou was shown yellow cards in the 11th and 17th minutes. The 1-0 defeat meant that Olhanense had failed to find the back of the net in over seven hours of football. With just two points from five games – with five to play – this virtually ends any chance Olhanense may have had of taking one of the top two promotion slots.

Crucial games at home to Pêro Pinheiro and Olhanense on the 15th and 22nd May could be pivotal. Kickoffs at the Estádio Dr. António João Eusébio (just off the High Street) are scheduled for 5.00pm; always worth checking closer to the day.

or the first time in three years officials and players of Sporting Clube Olhanense, along with local dignitaries were able to salute the flag on the 27th April; the club’s 110th Anniversary. Club President, Isidoro Sousa paid tribute to the Expat Supporters who followed the club through ‘thick and thin’ as well as East Algarve Walking Football who were now an important part of the club. Following the speeches a plaque was unveiled commemorating the installation of a defibrillator for use at the Stadium. The inscription reads: Dedicated to the memory of STEVE WILLIAMS and HENRIK MISIORNY, members of East Algarve Walking Football and SC Olhanense Supporters Group who financed the purchase of the equipment and training of volunteers.

hirty-one teams from the UK, Spain and Portugal enjoyed two days of friendly but competitive sport at the well appointed Ferreira FC, Albufeira. Organised by Algarve Football Tours, the two age groups (50+ and 60+) contested nearly 100 games of seven-a-side walking football that allows players just three touches of the ball and minimal physical contact. EAWF had teams in both age groups whilst Farense FC and Odiaxere WFC (west Algarve), who had been introduced to the sport by EAWF, were also present. Browns Sports and Leisure Club, Vilamoura host their fifth Annual 5-a-side WF Festival from the 5th to 8th May with teams from Preston North End, Clitheroe, Ipswich, Billericay (Essex), Carnoustie Panmure (Scotland) and KRC Gent (Belgium). Local teams are from Browns, Farense and EAWF Olhão and EAWF Tavira.

SHOOTING STARS Meet the young couple rising in the field of photography and owners of Bamboo Fotografia

J

oão and Sara Martins are the creators and photographers of Bamboo Fotografia. João was born in Monte Gordo and Sara in Santa Luzia, both towns located in the East part of

the Algarve. They have been photographing and making videos since they were kids, Sara with her aunt’s film camera and João using his uncle’s old school video camera and through the years photography and video has been an artistic escape from their daily lives and a favourite form of self-expression. Sara studied to be a nutritionist and João has worked as a personal trainer and used to help

46

Sara’s dad fishing in the past. Both never truly felt happy with their past careers and have always desired to explore their creative and artistic side. Once they had a taste of professional photography and videography they fell in love with it and knew this was to be their future career. The couple have both worked with people before, Sara in a hospital as a dietitian and João with his experience as a personal trainer. "We believe communication with the clients is almost as important as mastering the equipment. Our past working experiences helped us develop this soft skill and it really improved how we interact with different clients".

These days you can learn anything online. With their life-long experience with photography and video and numerous workshops and events they have participated in over the years, they felt that going to photography or film school wouldn’t really bring anything new to the table. Instead, they invested in the best equipment available on the market, which they continue to do, continually learning in an evolving industry. Their goal is simply to keep clients happy and to do what they love everyday. It's the perfect career for them. Being fulfilled and successful enough to earn a living from photography and video and being able to deliver the quality they presently do.

Asked what the future holds, Sara says "In the future we want to keep doing weddings and portraying people while transmitting raw yet beautiful emotions. Apart from that we would love to do more destination weddings in different parts of the world". Besides working with the best cameras, lenses and post-production software Bamboo Fotografia offers a very comfortable and fun experience for their clients. João says "It’s normal for people to be intimidated when being photographed or recorded so we always make them feel relaxed and comfortable as if they were just hanging out with friends that take reaaally good photos! Also we are very down to earth and simple people. We never look at situations as

48

problems, we always seek solutions which is very important in this area as things can get very unpredictable, especially during wedding days. Communication really is key and we aim to create a close bond with our clients so they don’t feel like we are just providing them a service, but an experience instead, as the best one possible". We asked what their favourite subject choice would be and also to best describe their style of photography. Sara replied "Tough question! Our favourite type of photography professionally would definitely be Wedding photography. In our free time and as more of a hobby for me it would be food and for João, Sports (Surf and Skate). Our style is very documental, focused on

capturing the smallest details, the ones that make a wedding day unique to each couple. In our editing process we like to use soft colours and warmer tones with little contrast. This is the aesthetic we want to achieve and that is so characteristic of our work". This young couple is clearly very dedicated to their work and are loving what they do, which we think shines through to the photos they produce. We are sure they will continue to be successful in this industry... and shoot for the stars. Contacts: www.bamboo-fotografia.com Instagram @bamboo.fotografia Telephone 965 791 378

overseas account, sending money, converting money into local currency, receiving money, and so on. Research has found small businesses in the UK pay approximately £4 billion to the major banks each year just to purchase international goods and services. These banks not only charge upfront fees for sending money overseas but offer unfavourable exchange rates. All of this makes it challenging for small businesses to understand precisely how much they are being charged. Take the example of an electronics merchant based in the UK importing from China and selling directly through their own website into Poland and Germany. The merchant can be charged to hold bank accounts in the UK for Polish Zloty and Euros. The merchant could pay a fee each time a payment is made into the Polish and German bank accounts. If the business makes an inventory purchase from China, they could be charged astronomical fees to convert funds into US dollars. This does not even include the significant premiums charged by the incumbents on the FX margin which is applied. Specialist financial services providers leverage nimble fintech features to improve efficiencies and drive down costs, enabling frictionless transactions with fewer delays when it comes to cross-border payments. GC Partners is one such example, and last year alone made 300,000 payments on behalf of their clients. Unlike banks, they offer a high-touch service assisting clients to protect themselves from risk in highly volatile markets. A personal relationship manager at GC Partners will offer clients an in-depth review of their company’s requirements and strategy. This includes an assessment of the risks that businesses face to protect their margins. The goal is to shield a business from currency volatility and ensure stable profit margins and sustainable growth. It is never a bad time to switch to specialist providers that help a business reduce costs. But recently, it seems like there has never been a more opportune moment for companies to consider how modern alternative offerings can help them not just survive but thrive. hether you are a Portuguese resident or moving to Portugal, international personal pensions (IPP’s) provide significant peace of mind, security, and improved financial certainty. There are many benefits which include the ability to accumulate and grow wealth in an unrestrained manner, flexibility of retirement benefits, robust legal protection, and seamless succession of your wealth. For residents or non-habitual residents of Portugal, the benefits of international personal pensions extend to include attractive levels of tax efficiency, whilst mitigating cross-border complexities of holding international assets and ensuring seamless and efficient passing on of the wealth.

INVESTORS AND THE STREAMING REVOLUTION

W

e are currently living in the golden age of TV. This is largely due to the streaming revolution. With so many award-winning shows being offered across multiple platforms, even A-list movie stars are ditching the silver screen to sink their teeth into juicier roles that allow them to spend more time with a character. But as streaming services begin increasing their subscription prices, households may need to reconsider which are their entertainment musthaves. At the height of the pandemic, TV and video services saw a record rise in subscribers. In 2020, subscribers increased by more than 8 million in the UK alone. Netflix increased its subscriber count by 37 million in 2020. The newer platform Disney+ gained 100 million subscribers in just over a year. The market values for both companies reached record levels by the end of 2021. This success is largely due to global lockdowns which provided a perfect opportunity for meteoric growth. As we move into a postpandemic era, these services may no longer be considered household essentials. Many households currently pay for these streaming services alongside their normal pay-tv

54

providers. With increasing inflation and skyrocketing energy prices, they may be forced to choose just one or two. As inflation causes household phone, broadband, and TV packages to increase by up to 10%, they may also choose to scrap cable TV altogether, as many have already done. Because streaming has become a global phenomenon, an unprecedented number of companies have emerged in recent years. Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ are among the most popular worldwide. Most of these companies produce their own original content that is exclusive to them. Because of this, it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to maintain subscriptions to multiple different platforms. Netflix catalysed the global entertainment model that offers low costs and encourages binge-watching. As more competitors have emerged, it is becoming increasingly clear that profitability will be an issue. Netflix has already implemented 22% price increases in the UK and Ireland. Disney+ increased its price by a third last year. Additionally, many consumers are now dreading the clampdown on Netflix’s previously lax rules around sharing passwords. Until recently, it had not been necessary to regulate password sharing; however, this is no longer economically feasible. They will soon begin charging customers an additional fee for adding members to their account. It has become clear, now, that this success is starting to wane. The question moving forward is: if the pandemic-fuelled streaming revolution has already peaked, what does this mean for investors? Streaming companies are seeing both more competition and slower growth. This may result in an unsustainable battle over content, especially as consumers reduce their household budgets. In January of this year, Netflix faced its least successful start to a year in more than a decade. Of course, this dip in subscriber growth has alarmed investors. The dip has consequently decreased the market value of the streaming giant. Throughout its history, Netflix has acted as an indicator for the rest of the industry. When Netflix sees a slowing down in growth at a time where its recent content is performing incredibly strong, this elicits questions about the future of streaming. While its subscriber count may be underperforming, Netflix has no immediate

plans to slow down on its content production. They, along with Disney, are increasing content spending. In fact, Netflix attributes its price rises to funding more quality content. The problem they face is that even with an increase in its content budget, many are unsubscribing after they watch the trending hits. While wealthier populations will be able to take on these price increases, less wealthy nations may be overlooked. India, for example, is a market with huge potential, but consumers there may be unable to pay more for streaming. One market that has been largely untouched by streamers is gaming. This is soon to change. Netflix has already developed a video game strategy. In November 2021, they launched Netflix Games, a provider of original mobile games available to subscribers. By tapping into a billion-dollar industry, they may appeal to a wider demographic. Now, streaming services are finding themselves moving into a space that is reminiscent of how TV has been traditionally consumed over the years. This trend is to release new episodes of their popular shows on a weekly basis, or in batches of a few at a time. The hope is that this will put an end to subscribers cancelling their memberships after they have binged the most popular programmes, while also extending the life of content. Another way streaming platforms are attempting to increase profitability is by curbing their trial periods. Netflix, for example, no longer offers a free 30-day trial. Apple has also cancelled its offer of free access to Apple TV+ for a year with the purchase of a device. But just as these streaming giants are taking on a more conventional approach, traditional media companies are developing their own streaming platforms and entering the crowded arena. What is important to consider is that there is a limit for how much people are willing to pay. Streaming fatigue is an issue, and the market is becoming congested with virtually unlimited choices. It has been proven that cancellations increase when customers surpass three services. Fortunately, there is hope for the future. Newer services have exhibited strong early growth. Disney+ even recently beat Wall Street’s expectations and recovered after their disappointing numbers in November. As always, it is key to consult with an expert before making investment decisions. 25TH APRIL – THE CARNATION FLOWER DAY

I

n 1974, on this specific day, Portugal lived through a revolution! A revolution that ended the dictatorship and started democracy. After this day, a long period of social change and power struggles followed between the left and right-wing political forces. This revolution was somewhat unusual in that the revolutionaries didn't resort to violence to achieve their goals. The population, holding red carnations, convinced the army not to resist and the soldiers swapped their bullets for flowers. There are few studies about handicap people living in a dictatorial regime. What we know is what parents of handicap people told us about how children and teenagers used to live. And in a dictatorial regime people with handicaps, special severe handicaps, were not seen. Most of the children could not go to school. Didn't have therapies, and parents would have it bad with starvation of life. Most of these parents could not work to be with their handicap child. They would be seen as a special group that forms a part of the marginalised. And because we are a Christian country, in some regions, having a child with special needs would be seen as a curse to the family! After the revolution, the paradigm started changing step by step. Children could now go to special schools, that were built just for them, where they would have treatments and special education. A few years ago, the paradigm evolved further, looking for a more social approach, where children would be included in schools with their peers, not discriminating the child but adapting to the environment. Still, we have a lot of work to do, to make sure all children and teenagers are treated with respect, included in a community where they are seen and where their necessities are assured. I'll include two poems/songs about the revolution and that are about freedom and inclusion too. Philosophic Stone (Manuel Freire):

TINY STEPS TO BEING HAPPY On New Year’s Day many of us set new resolutions (to lose weight, drink less, stop smoking, be kinder to our loved ones etc. etc.). Gym owners will tell you they are overwhelmed with new memberships in January!! not predictable. The solution lies in what you do when your motivation feels high. ABILITY (A): Your capacity to execute a behaviour. Your ability can be either High or Low depending upon whether something you want to do is Easy to Do (High) or Hard to Do (Low). When the new behaviour is hard, (we have low Ability) our Motivation quickly fades. PROMPT (P): Your cue (or trigger) to execute a behaviour. Each day we have dozens of automatic responses to what happens to us. For example, hearing an alarm prompts you to get up in the morning or feeling hungry prompts you to eat. One of the most valuable insights BJ Fogg has, after testing his research on 40,000 people, is the concept of the ACTION LINE. Look at the picture below, we promise it is not as complicated as it might look!! A Prompt above the Action Line is one where

both the Motivation is high AND it is easy to do. (high Ability) BJ Fogg uses many funny and personal stories to illustrate his Tiny Habits method. One of his desires was to get stronger by doing many pushups per day. His motivation was high, but it was hard (low ability). So, he came up with this Above the Action Line solution: He used going to the toilet as the prompt to do just two pushups. When he began, it quickly became automatic, and seven years later he does it every day! Let's create our own example. Using a Gratitude Journal. We know that being grateful will improve your happiness. DESIRED BEHAVIOR (B): Write in your gratitude journal immediately upon rising every morning. MOTIVATION (M): High — you really want to make this a habit. ABILITY (A): High — spending a few minutes to sit down and write in your journal is Easy to Do, therefore your Ability is High. PROMPT (P): For an Above the Line prompt put the pen and journal on your bedside table next to the alarm clock so you see it when it rings! We have created House of Happiness Portugal to be a place to create new habits for wellbeing and happiness. Our Happy Team will assist you whenever your motivation is low and the new habit is hard. IN THE MEANTIME, REMEMBER, START TINY!

e want to change, and maybe we even take the first step (don´t buy a pack of cigarettes for a week when trying to quit smoking). Still, year after year, many of our resolutions are never fulfilled. Why is there such a disconnect between what people want and what people do? Should you blame yourself for not doing what you need to do to see the results you want? No. BJ Fogg, founder of the Behaviour Design Lab at Stanford University wrote a book in 2019 called Tiny Habits: The Small Changes that Change Everything “The essence of Tiny Habits is this: Take the behaviour you want, make it tiny, find where it fits naturally in your life, and nurture its growth. If you want to create long-term change, it’s best to start small." According to the author, behaviour happens when the three elements: Motivation, Ability, and Prompt—come together at the same time. MOTIVATION (M): Your desire to execute a behavior. Your motivation can be either High or Low depending upon your level of desire to create change. BJ Fogg believes one reason most people don't make the changes they want is that they depend too much on motivation. He points out that motivation goes up and down and is

Health

I MADE A PROMISE

T

he phone rang. My stomach churned with fear, trepidation and yet excitement too. Relief took over when my hospital consultant announced that I was clear of stage IV

cancer. We were in the kitchen at Home Farm. It was October 2015. Mum and I hugged and cried together. She stood up, held my hands, looked me straight in the eyes and said, "Promise me you will tell everyone how to beat cancer. Promise me. You must tell everyone how to heal. Say it. Say you promise!" In fact, Mum wouldn't let go of my hands. She shouted at me until I said out loud, "I promise to tell everyone how they can heal themselves." Six and a half years later, I've finally launched The Perfect Health HUB with the assistance of my clever buddy and co-founder Jessica Prime. It's early days, yet already The Perfect Health HUB contains hundreds of golden nuggets on how to reverse so many conditions which can and do lead to a miserable life for millions of people. What I promised wasn't quite right though because we can't heal ourselves. Our body does that all by itself when you provide it with the right environment. ALLOPATHIC (Western), INTEGRATIVE, COMPLEMENTARY or ALTERNATIVE? Despite western medics claiming otherwise, there are multiple treatment choices available when considering how to support the body to heal itself. Treatment availability and choices vary from postcode to postcode, from doctor to doctor, and condition to condition. No two situations are the same despite similarities. No two bodies are the same. And so, why do we expect treatment choices to be the same? There is no one-size-fits-all remedy for any condition on the planet because our physical bodies and our mental strength capacities are so different (more about this in another article). Allopathic medicine typically treats the body with drugs or surgery. Alternative is usually considered to utilise totally natural remedies of which there are many. Complementary and integrative approaches are what the words suggest – an adjunctive combination according to what the owner of the body prefers.

58

A personal account of how Elaine Goldley received the news that she had beaten cancer and made a promise to her mother to show others how to do the same WHAT DID I DO? In three of the four cancer episodes I have experienced, I took an integrative approach which depended upon my knowledge, experience, and training at the time. For several bouts of skin cancer on my face, following diagnosis, I used a totally natural solution. For a serious and rare kidney disease I was born with in 1957, I beat it completely naturally when I was introduced to the powers of chiropractic and nutritional solutions in my mid-forties. Now in my mid-sixties, I am so proud to boast the energy and optimism of a 25-year-old and combine the wisdom, experience and training that grows with me daily to help myself and countless others in fulfilling the promise to my late Mother. Even if I had not made the solemn promise, I am duty bound both ethically and morally to share what I know so that others may enjoy an improvement in their circumstances. WHERE TO START? Following many years of providing volunteer guidance and support to literally hundreds of individuals and families, I've noticed patterns of behaviour which I've developed into a support and recovery programme. Step by step, it's potentially possible to reverse most conditions when detected soon enough and action is taken. Even in cases of late diagnosis and when people have been literally told to go home and put their affairs in order, I've worked with individuals for them to gain extra time and extra quality of life. In some cases, we've turned the ship around as in my own case – more than once! By action I don't mean diving straight into surgery which I was frightened into. I simply mean taking a step back to consider options, do some research and follow the path on which your intuition guides you. FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION How often have you reflected in hindsight and regretted a decision which went against your initial 'feelings'? Typically, we make decisions on emotion, then justify with logic. The logical argument is often accompanied by well-meaning friends, colleagues, and family piling on the pressure to conform to a standard of treatment which is pushed as a mainstream solution. This heavy pressure is upon the vulnerable person, even though none of the well-wishers are

likely to truly know the first thing about your condition nor your personal situation or even your deeply held beliefs. FEAR Fear is usually their driver. Fear of losing you. Fear of you making the wrong decision in their view. Really? You are told, doctor knows best. Really. Do they? Have you seen a GP recently? Did you know that a GP without a computer in this modern world is completely at sea? Yes, you do know. You've seen them google your symptoms, then insult you with a printout and tell you to contact various support agencies – many of whom are so stretched they never even answer the telephone. So, what do you do? Where do you start? THE PERFECT HEALTH HUB When mainstream everybody and everything push very hard towards a standard size 6 shoe for ladies and size 9 for men, and your GP sends you away with a printout and a handful of prescriptions to 'try' – as happened to a client of mine recently (seven, yes 7 prescriptions, with no diagnosis despite many bloods tests that were all 'inconclusive'), it can be worrying and confusing. The Perfect Health HUB comprises a growing DIY repository of tools, techniques, videos, downloads, interviews and recommendations to many different resources and people and accessible to all. HUB membership includes 24/7 access to all resources, health goal setting group calls, weekly accountability check-in calls, free group networking, health education presentations, webinars with expert speakers including doctors, free health consultations, discounts on preferred supplier resources tools and services, including the legendary Perfect Health Retreats (later this year in the Algarve) and more. ucculents look amazing, do not require too much looking after and are perfect for the East Algarve climate. An added bonus is that from one succulent plant you have the possibility to make many, many more. We hope you enjoy the below guide to leaf propagating and create a splendid garden, both inside and outside your home. Propagating succulents is typically a very simple process, however, some plants are more difficult to propagate than others. Ones that tend to be successful are: Echeveria, Sedum, Pachyveria, Sedeveria, Graptoveria, Graptopetalum, Jade plants, Sempervivum rosettes. Leaf propagation works best for succulents with fleshy leaves. To root successfully, the leaf must stay whole. Grasp the leaf with your forefinger and thumb and gently rock it back and forth to loosen it. Then carefully detach the leaf, with its base intact, from the mother plant. Some leaves will pop right off with a gentle tug, while others may require a sharp knife. Using a sterile knife, remove a healthy leaf. It is important that the curve of the leaf base remains attached. Before we can place our leaves on soil to begin growing new plants, we must let the ends dry out and callous over. To do this,

place the cutoff leaves in a single row on a plate or tray and let the leaves heal in a warm area with bright light for about four days. This step is vital, if skipped and placed directly in soil they will absorb too much moisture and they will rot and die. Once you feel like the ends are dry enough, you can place them on top of some welldraining cactus or succulent soil. Wet the soil, and place the leaf on top of the soil for propagation. Use a spray bottle to mist your leaves when the soil is dry. Be sure to keep them indoors, in a warm place with plenty of bright light, but not direct sun. They need to be kept moist and warm. After 2-3 weeks you will see little pink roots sprouting from the ends of the leaves and then tiny baby plants will begin to grow. When the leaves have a decent root system and have begun making tiny baby plants, that’s when it’s time to add them to their own pots. Make sure you use a fast draining soil. Cover the roots with a pinch of soil leaving the little baby exposed and leave the mama

leaf attached, eventually the mama leaf will turn brown and will fall off. This means the succulent has taken all of the nutrients from the leaf and no longer needs it. AFTER-CARE As your plants matures, you can transplant your succulents to larger pots, combination planters or garden homes. Always ensure your succulents have coarse, loose soil and excellent drainage to keep them healthy and free from rot. Most mature succulents prefer full to partial sun, but protect new plants from harsh, intense rays. More light can intensify succulent colours, but too much light can cause fading and sunburn. Even in deserts, succulents are often shaded by taller plants. Succulents tolerate heat and drought well, but regular watering keeps waterconserving leaves and stems plump, beautiful and firm. Always let the soil dry out well, then water deeply and thoroughly. Let succulent soil dry out before you water again.
