PUBLISHER’S NOTE

On the Cover

“Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish these natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children’s children.”

My daughter Eleni and I at Yellowstone Park

-President Theodore Roosevelt President Theodore Roosevelt was actually standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon when he spoke these words in 1903. Mike Jernigan and Lee Byrd, leaders of the non-profit Friends of Mabry Park and featured on our front cover this month, carry on that vision for green space to be preserved for their intrinsic natural beauty and be enjoyed for the benefit and enjoyment of all. It is this kind of leadership and vision that makes our East Cobb community sparkle! For more information about their efforts visit www.mabrypark.org.

This month, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22. Earth Day provides us with a perfect opportunity to raise our awareness and appreciation for our Mother Earth. We often overlook nature, take her for granted, fail to wonder at her beauty, her complexity, her intensity, her tenderness, her changeability. Creating another passive park in East Cobb is a great way to bring that global message to the local level. The articles in this issue spotlight local efforts of going “green”: from a review of how East Cobb PTAs “Green It Up” (page 10), to Chattahoochee Nature Center’s annual Earth Day Fest (page 11 ) to Cobb’s Master Gardeners’ annual garden tour (page 53). These local organizations remind us to appreciate and take care of our Mother Earth—right here in our own backyards--literally! I also included a story about my family’s trip to Yellowstone Park (page 58 & 59) -another incredible way to experience and appreciate nature.

Featured on our front cover this month is Mark Jernigan, President; and, Lee Byrd, Vice President of the nonprofit group, Friends of Mabry Park. As part of the 2006 Parks Bond, Cobb County purchased the 26.5 acres of land, located at Sandy Plains Road and Wesley Chapel Road from the Mabry Family which had run it as a working farm. The county does not have the funds to finish the park, so East Cobb residents Mark Jernigan and Lee Berg formed the nonprofit group Friends of Mabry Park to raise awareness and money for Mabry Park. The men have raised enough money to fund a master plan that includes walking trails, a playground, a dog park and gardens. Lee imagines (that’s the group’s tag line) a green space for people to connect with nature, to

East Cobber Wins Trip to Washington, D.C. to Represent Georgia at Mom Congress Parenting magazine announced that East Cobber Lyssa Turner Sahadevan has been selected to represent Georgia at the second annual Mom Congress on Education and Learning® conference at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. this April 10 - 13. Lyssa was chosen for her outstanding contributions and dedication to improving local schools. A total of fifty-one moms, representing each state and the District of Columbia, have been selected by Parenting as Mom

Congress delegates. For the second year in a row, Parenting selected each delegate from applications submitted through Parenting.com. Each will receive round-trip airfare, a three-night hotel stay, and the opportunity to connect with other moms from across the country to share success stories, challenges, and concerns as they work to improve our nation’s schools. “I am thrilled to be representing East Side Elementary, Cobb County, and all of Georgia.” says Lyssa Sahadevan of her excitement to be a part of Mom Congress. “As a first grade teacher, I value the role parents play in their child’s education.

As a mom who happens to also be a teacher, I want the very best opportunities for every child! I look forward to meeting the other moms and being a part of such a powerful conference!” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan headlines the roster of education and advocacy leaders scheduled to address the delegates at the conference. On Tuesday, April 12th, Secretary Duncan will speak to attendees about the crucial role that parents play in helping implement the national agenda for improving the country’s school system and the educational opportunities available to our nation’s children. Other organizations scheduled to appear include First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, StudentsFirst.org, Reach Out and Read, the National PTA, National Education Association, Headstart, PBS, and NBC Learn. Driven by the ever-increasing role that parents play in advocating for positive change in the education system, Parenting magazine launched the Mom Congress initiative in March 2009 to celebrate and connect moms fighting for better schools. Each month, the School Years edition of Parenting gives readers the education news and resources they need to make a difference, and highlights the efforts of some of its 21,000+ Mom Congress members who have brought about positive change for students.

East Side Elementary School Celebrates The Old, Looks Forward to Their New School

EastSide Elementary School: Fall 2011

ool: 1965 East Side Elementary Sch On Thursday, May 5, from 6-8pm, the staff members and students of East Side Elementary School will hold an Open House at the school to allow the community, former teachers and employees to bid farewell to East Side’s old building. The Open House will include refreshments, and a display created by alumni of memorabilia from the school’s fifty plus years of service. In the 1800s, students in first through ninth grades in east Cobb attended the two-room school known as Mt. Bethel School, located at the intersection of Lower Roswell and Johnson Ferry. It was the first public educational institution in East Cobb County. In 1946, the 10 acres where East Side now exists were donated to the Cobb County Board of Education. At that time Indian Hills Parkway was known as Gray Road but Indian Hills had not yet been developed. When East Side was on the drawing board, it was referred to as the Mt. Bethel School because it would be replacing the original Mt. Bethel School. At the same time, a new high school

was under construction and was known as East Side High School. However, when the schools opened, the high school was named Sprayberry in honor of School Superintendent Paul Sprayberry, and our school was named East Side Elementary. When East Side opened in the fall of 1952, this area was very rural, surrounded by farm and pasture land. School folklore says that Mr. James Bailey, East Side Principal from 1965 to 1978, would have to chase cows off the playground before students could go out for recess. That was before the Indian Hills subdivision was built in the late ‘60’s . East Side opened with 314 students and 11 classrooms in a single 15,500 square foot building. It housed first through eighth grades. Today East Side Elementary has 1,040 students (kindergarten through fifth-grade) and 50 classrooms in a remodeled 77,918 square feet of space (three buildings), plus 12 portables. Funded by the 1% Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) approved by the voters of Cobb County in a referendum held September 16, 2008, East Side Elementary School will be opening its newly-built school in mid-August. The new school is constructed on the existing school site. The new building will occupy the playfields behind the existing school. The existing buildings will remain in place until the new facility is completed and then be demolished over the summer to make way for parking for the new school. The new school will house 69 classroom spaces and be 149,892 square feet in size, compared to the existing buildings which have 49 classroom spaces, with 11 additional classes currently being taught in portables, and total 77,918 square feet. The new school will house all of the classes under one roof. The building will consist of three floors with direct access in to and out of the building from the first two floors without stairs. All kindergarten through second grade students will be housed on the lower floors with third, fourth and fifth grade students occupying the upper level.

The Cobb County School District recently launched its Family Resource Database, providing families with instant and easy access to more than 1,000 social service providers in Cobb. The service is part of the Success For All Students project, a school-based mental health support program funded by $8.5 million in grant funds from the federal Safe Schools/Healthy Students Program.

hen your child isn’t getting the grades you think he or she should, call Huntington Learning Center.

The Family Resource Database is available at http:// www.cobbk12.org/FamilyResources and includes information regarding resources such as child care, individual and family counseling, emergency housing, food assistance, eldercare services and debt counseling. Resources may be searched by zip code, agency name or service type. An effort of the District’s social work department, the Success For All Students project provides additional support services that aim to decrease discipline events, improve attendance and ultimately improve student performance. The program is comprised of five key elements: safe school environments and violence prevention; alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention activities; student behavioral, social and emotional supports; mental health services; and early childhood social and emotional learning programs. The Family Resource Database uniquely positions Cobb County schools to connect students and families to the resources they may need with just a few mouse clicks.

East Cobb County Council of PTA Schools “Green It Up” All Year Long By Monica Anschel Many East Cobb schools have a PTA committee focused on Environmental Education. These efforts cover a wide variety of areas - from maintaining outdoor classroom space to promoting “Waste-Free Lunch Days” to recycling efforts. It’s important to note that these activities are not just about having a student separate his recyclables from trash; very often the programs supplement the Georgia Performance Standards for environmental, conservation and other classroom learning topics. The projects and programs enrich the student’s experience of science with hands-on activities. For example, Timber Ridge Elementary PTA sponsors a Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle week. During this time, the school community engages in a friendly contest to see which grade can bring in the most items to recycle (limited to aluminum cans and plastic bottles). This year, the proceeds from each class were used to adopt a sea turtle or manatee affected by the oil spill in the Gulf. In February, students celebrated Georgia’s Arbor Day by having a PoetTree contest. Kindergarteners and first graders submitted posters about trees, while the 2nd-5th graders submitted poems. There’s a writing lesson AND a science lesson! The PTA at East Side Elementary formed the Planet Patrol environmental club this year for students. One of its early projects was taking an after-school field trip to East Cobb Park. After picking up litter along the route from campus to the park, club members then met with Cobb County Parks and Recreation personnel to talk about the challenges of maintaining a public park. Sope Creek Elementary students experience an Environmental Education project at each grade level: Kindergarteners grow and release butterflies, first graders go to a nearby pond to study plants and animals, second graders plant a tops and bottoms garden, third graders study

For Earth Day, students at Kincaid Elementary will be planting trees and participating in a Young Audience Recycling workshop by making a Chihuly Chandelier out of water bottles. Many East Cobb schools participate in the Clean Air Campaign to reduce idling emissions near students. Many schools also have wildlife habitats and vegetable gardens right on the grounds to serve as outdoor classrooms. These students and parent and teacher volunteers are doing great things! And it doesn’t stop at the elementary school level. Want to get involved to encourage these efforts as well as live a little greener? Here are a few ways the community can celebrate Earth Day and support recycling efforts: > Dickerson’s Environmental & Recycling Club Sponsors Electronics Recycling Saturday, April 23rd from 10am to 4pm at Dickerson Middle School. A list of acceptable items can be found on the Federal Recyclers website at http://federalrecyclers.com/Writings.html.

> Walton’s Environmental Club Hosts a Paper Shredding Event Saturday, April 23rd from 10am until 3pm at Walton High School parking lot (1590 Bill Murdock Road, Marietta 30062.)This event will be partnered with Action Secure Shredding, Inc. A minimum charge of $5 per box (banker’s box), $10 per File Box and $15 per Trash Bag, with 40% of proceeds going to Walton High School’s Environmental Club.

Here are a couple of PTA-sponsored resources available for schools and other groups looking to increase their environmental efforts: > Georgia PTA http://www.georgiapta.org/resources-student-env-ed.html > East Cobb County Council of PTAs http://www.ecccpta.org/environmental-education/ We applaud all of our PTA Environmental Education Committees, for the work they do all year long – and especially in celebration of Earth Day! Walton Girls Tennis Team Sets State Wins Record By Sean Conway

ssFront row (l-r) Katie Wagasky, Emily Harte, Emily Zabor, Melissa Mashburn, Maxie Weinberg. Second row (l-r): Coach Roberta Manheim, Kayla Brady,Stephanie Falcon, Marissa Pulido, Rachel Harte, Amelia McIsaac, Ansley Bridges, Claire Marshall. In the sports world, two words don’t usually walk hand in hand: “team” and “tennis.” Casual observers wouldn’t think so, but at Walton High School in East Cobb, the girls’ tennis team is the ultimate team sport. The roster is blessed with a seemingly endless number of key players, literally and figuratively. Oh, and in the measure of wins versus losses, Walton happens to be the best team Georgia high school athletics has ever seen. On Thursday afternoon, March 3, the girls’ tennis team defeated visiting Woodstock for their 135th match victory in a row. No team in the state in any sport, gender, classification or combination of the three has won as many consecutive competitions. Again, this team has won every match since the 2003 state quarterfinals, including region and state playoffs. No losses. That’s seven straight undefeated seasons and state championships.

has two wins on the ATP tour and played for Walton’s neighbor/ rival Wheeler, and Melanie Oudin, currently ranked as the 43rd best female tennis player in the world, are East Cobbers. Girls head coach Roberta Manheim is the architect/perpetuator of the streak. She coaches the girls weekdays and balances the expertise they receive off campus. “The girls give up so much (of their personal goals) to be a part of this team,” said Mannheim after the record-setting match. “They work their drills around being a part of this. They recognize that this is a team sport. This is an important part of their senior year. There are no ‘me-mes’ here on this team.” (Excerpted from an article posted on GPB News.)

While all the wins are impressive, it’s actually the means that justify the results. The East Cobb area, like many Atlanta suburbs, is mad for tennis. Elite academies pepper the local kids with instruction and hitting sessions all year long. The tennis incubator is so rich, these kids literally don’t need to play for their high school. They embrace the idea of collecting their talent for the prep season. Two of the best current American professional players grew up in the Walton zip codes: Robby Ginepri who,

Earth Day Kids Fest at the Chattahoochee Nature Center

The 9th Annual Earth Day Kids Fest (EDKF), sponsored by the Captain Planet Foundation (CPF), and Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC) promises to be education and fun rolled into one! Being held on April 16, from 10a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, this yearly Fest is a unique and exciting hands-on environmental education event where youngsters are encouraged to take the first steps in becoming environmental stewards. Through engaging activities and performances, kids are energized with empowering information, allowing them to lead the way in preserving and protecting our biological diversity and natural resources. “We are looking forward to another fantastic year for Earth Day Kids Fest,” says Laura Turner Seydel, Captain Planet Foundation Chairperson. “Our staff at the Captain Planet Foundation, along with our partner, the Chattahoochee Nature Center, and a stellar group of volunteers work really hard to make each year bigger and better. I am confident that those who attend will enjoy the environmental education, “hands on” activities and the entertainment. This is a wonderful opportunity to get children (and families) outdoors and learning.” The entire day is sure to inspire children to take action, even in the smallest ways, to help save the planet! In fact, this is your chance to mingle with your favorite Superhero, Captain Planet, in person, as he will make appearances throughout the day and take photos with budding Planeteers! CPF will also have an example of a Captain Planet’s Learning Garden on display as well as a planting activity for

children. Captain Planet’s cartoons will be shown in the Cowie Weiss Theater as part of the day’s activities. Atlanta Falcons fullback, Ovie Mughelli, will return for his popular “Recycle on the Run.” This interactive activity intermingles NFL training with recycling components. Attendees can also enjoy live musical performances with inspiring messages about our Mother Earth. CNC will sponsor live animal presentations to bring the outdoors up close and personal. Guests can even paddle a canoe on the CNC Beaver Pond. Numerous other groups and environmental organizations will have booths to help everyone explore ecothemes and create special arts and crafts. Additionally, Freshens will provide refreshing smoothies for kids of all ages. There will be a green marketplace for the adults to view an array of earthfriendly household goods. Healthy, delicious snacks will be complimentary. The price of admission is $5 for children, $6 for seniors, $8 for adults, and children under two are free. Attendees who ride a bike from home will also receive free admission. Easy to access complimentary shuttle bus service will be available from St. Francis School near the corner of Willeo/Azalea and Highway 120. Carpooling is strongly encouraged as parking is limited. Dust Off Your Cleats! Cobb Adult Soccer League Seeks Players GOALLLLLLLLLL! Started about 20 years ago, the Cobb Adult Soccer League (CASL) has been offering “grown-ups” the opportunity to play soccer. They may not run as fast as they did in their 20s or go for as many balls, but teams of self-professed “old guys” refuse to stop playing their favorite sport – soccer. If you love soccer, this is the league to join. Cobb Adult Soccer League is split up into three divisions, with an Over 30, Over 40, Women’s, and newly formed Hispanic divisions as well. The CASL runs from September through November and continues at the end of February through May. A shortened summer season begins in June, with seven players instead of the typical eleven. All games are played on Sundays, starting at 11am and ending around 9pm at Terrell Mill Park and Noonday Park as well as other fields in Cobb County.

night tournament is a fun time for all! The Fire Breathing Bunny Rabbits (FBBR), a Division III men’s team in the league, has entered the U.S. National Cup. If they win the state championship, the FBBR have the opportunity to compete in the Regional tournament held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Jack Frost Tournament, an annual competition, is sponsored by the Atlanta Metro Soccer League, and open to men over the age of 30. This past January, the Over 30 Club, Rovers FC White, was crowned champions of The Jack Frost Soccer Fest. Mike Kinion, Team Manager, loves their teamwork. “If a teammate messes up a play,” Mike says, “instead of yelling or assessing blame, everyone on the team is finding where they need to be to stop the other team as a result of that misplay, lending support and encouragement back to that teammate, forgetting about it and moving on with the game.”

A highlight of the season is the Cinco de Mayo tournament. The games are shortened to 30 minute halves, with seven players on each side. Hosted by the CASL, this one

American Legion Sponsors Girls and Boys State Boys State and Girls State are summer leadership and citizenship programs sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary for high school students between their junior and senior years. Boys and Girls State programs both began in 1937 and are held in each of the U.S. states (excluding Hawaii), usually on a college campus within that state. In general, male and female programs are held separately, but at least seven states—Georgia, Nebraska, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New Hampshire —host Boys’ and Girls’ State on the same campus on the same week. Georgia Boys/Girls State is a comprehensive one week course in state and local government. It is a “leadership action program” where qualified male and female high school rising seniors take part in a practical government course. It is designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government and to impress upon the citizen the fact that our government is just what we make it. Along the way delegates have the opportunity to learn the political process by organizing a mythical 51st state. Each level of government is run by those delegates who are elected to serve. Instruction is presented on the law and court system, parliamentary procedure and Georgia political history. American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each

High school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts to attend the program. Expenses associated with attending this program are paid by a sponsoring American Legion Post, a local business or another community-based organization. Girls State and Boys State programs are intended for the most outstanding students, from the standpoint of leadership, character, and scholarship in the high schools. Only those girls and boys who will enthusiastically devote their time to increasing their knowledge, while at the same time advancing the whole Boys/ Girls State Program, are chosen. “Boys State and Girls State promotes a respect for our government, our leaders and our military,” said Bill Secreast, Boys and Girls State coordinator for the Marietta American Legion. The 2011 Session will be held June 12-18 at Georgia Southern University. Interested students should contact their high school Guidance Counselor for more information.

Who Says Lite Can’t Be Done Right? Take it from the people who know best: D’Lites customers! “Now that Weight Watchers has a new point system, most frozen treats are off limits due to the high sugar level. But with D’Lites, the points stayed the same. So I know where to go to satisfy my sweet tooth without ruining my diet, D’Lites.” -Angel

Good Times. Always on Tap. Classic American Tavern Fare featuring favorites such as Gourmet Burgers, Grilled Atlantic Salmon and our “Infamous” Fish Tacos.

“With my wife and I being diabetic, eating frozen treats was always an issue. But after discovering D’Lites, we can enjoy their low-carb ice cream without it impacting our blood sugar. They offer a variety of low carb ice cream so we always have something new to look forward to.” –Larry “I love D’Lites cotton candy ice cream because it tastes like cotton candy. I like it with gummi bears!” –Katie, 4 years old

ssOwners Ashley and Jay Malaquias

Ice cream lovers have been enjoying D’Lites for 29 years. It all started in Plantation, Florida, when Susan Corsover, at the age of 31, had two open-heart surgeries. Susan knew she had to limit sweets but she couldn’t live without creamy delicious ice cream. Instead of giving up Susan did the only thing she could do she invented her own lite ice cream, D’Lites!

Although D’Lites ice cream has been around for years, only recently licensees have been branching out throughout North America. Living in Tampa for many years, Jay and Ashley Malaquias found their local D’Lites through a friend. It was not uncommon for them to make several trips per week. The combination of delicious ice cream and a guilt free conscience was something they loved! One day after enjoying D’Lites ice cream, it was clear that opening a D’Lites would be their new business venture. Jay and Ashley chose East Cobb because this is the type of community they want to raise their family and build their business in.

Annual Indoor Yard Sale to Benefit Animal Rescue Groups Mostly Mutts is heading up their third annual indoor yard sale at the Climatized Self Storage in Woodstock during the weekends of April 1-3, April 8-10 and April 15-17. Gently used and new items will be sold by about eight area animal rescue organizations in approximately 20,000 square feet of space donated by Climatized Self Storage. 100% of the sale proceeds will benefit the animal rescues in their efforts to provide care and vetting to some of the 70,000+ homeless animals in the Atlanta area. “Our volunteers handpick the items that are graciously donated by our community,” says Paige O’Neill, Founder of Mostly Mutts. “Last year’s sales generated more than $20,000 for the animals.” Items for sale include antiques, furniture, electronics, pet supplies, home and garden décor, children’s clothing, games, toys, collectibles, sporting goods, etc. The sale will be held at Climatized Self Storage of Woodstock, located one block south of Highway 92 on Trickum Road. The hours of operation are as follows: >Fridays: April 1, 8, 15- 9am – 4pm >Saturdays: April 2, 9, 16- 9am – 4pm >Sundays: April 3, 10, 17- 11am – 4pm

Participating organizations include Mostly Mutts, Cherokee County Humane Society, Cocker Spaniel Rescue of GA, Inc., Spay/Neuter Coalition, Atlanta Dog Squad, Rockin’ P Rescue, Inc., and Leaving Tracks, Inc. – Greyhound Rescue. Pet Buddies Food Pantry will be accepting donations of dry and canned dog and cat food during the sale. According to the Humane Society of America, four million cats and dogs--about one every eight seconds- are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Atlanta alone euthanizes around 100,000 animals per year. Many of these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets. Spay/neuter is a proven way to reduce pet overpopulation. Mostly Mutts is an all volunteer-based, licensed shelter and 501(C)3 organization that has placed nearly 3,000 animals since its inception in 2004. The mission of Mostly Mutts is to work closely with animal control officers and other rescue organizations to reduce the number of animals euthanized at local shelters. Mostly Mutts provides housing, health care, training, plus physical and emotional care to adoptable animals until they find a new home. Visit Mostlymutts.org or call 770-325-7387 for more information.

East Cobbers Co-Chair Salvation Army’s Dogwood Coffee Fundraiser

The Coach’s Corner Want to Start Your Own Business A lot of people are doing it - some out of want and some out of necessity. You may already have your own business now. Even if so, some of this information will be of help. Question: How do I find the right business for me? A good starting point is to make a list of your strengths and figure out a way to apply them to a business that interests you. Next, analyze the industry to determine how you could run a similar business better. Now make a list of five to seven things in which you excel, and another list of things you don’t like to do. Then do the same for things you like and dislike about your business life. This will help you discover a business that you will not only enjoy, but at which you will excel.

The Women’s Auxiliary of metro Atlanta is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for The Salvation Army’s programs for men, women and children. Each month, a group of 200 metro area women meet in a spiritual atmosphere, enjoy programs and relationships, and contribute skills and resources to better the metro Atlanta community. Several East Cobbers are members of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. Throughout the year, the Women’s Auxiliary volunteer, host and raise funds for services and programs that affects permanent, positive change for those in need throughout metro Atlanta. The Women’s Auxiliary will host its 40th Annual Dogwood Coffee, which will take place on April 14. This year two East Cobb residents, Jan Heck and Dawn Menear, are co-chairing this year’s Dogwood Coffee. Although the Coffee will be held at a home in Buckhead, 65 Valley Road, Atlanta, many East Cobb residents are responsible for making this event a success. The Dogwood Coffee is a fundraising event benefiting disadvantaged youth. This year the donations will be used to send children to Camp Grandview, a Salvation Army operated camp in the mountains of North Georgia, as well as renovating the library at The Salvation Army Temple Corps. This renovation will add a children’s area with new children’s books, an inviting area to sit and read, and an area for the homework help program. “This year is the 40th Anniversary of the Coffee and our goal is to raise $40,000. Traditionally, the first $10,000 raised from the Dogwood Coffee is used to provide camperships for inner city Atlanta children to attend Camp Grandview in the mountains of North Georgia. The remainder of the money raised this year will be used to renovate the library and develop a homework study area at the Temple Corp facility, “ says co-chair Jan Heck. For more information on The Women’s Auxiliary, or the programs and services of The Salvation Army Metro Atlanta Area Command, visit www.salvationarmyatlanta.org. For more information regarding the Dogwood Coffee contact Jan Heck at Sjheck01@comcast.net. www.eastcobber.com

Once you pull the trigger on starting your business, there are several things that you will need to do yourself, then hire, contract other people, delegate, and/or create alliance partnerships to thrust your business forward. The three main reasons to start a business in order of importance are: (1) Provide a product and/or service; (2) Provide jobs, yours being the first; (3) Make a profit. Following is a list of your main concerns. • Products and or Services: What are the cutting edge benefits and the quality you strive for in your industry? • Sales & Marketing: These are two very different things. Marketing defines and gets your name and what you offer to your target audience. Sales are how you get the cash register to ring. • Finances: Monies and an accounting system are needed for startup and through the first year. • A Proforma: At least a 12-month projection of gross sales by month and cost associated with the sales, and overhead cost to get your net profit or loss before taxes. • Staffing: People to hire, contract with and form alliances/partnerships. • Space: To operate your business. It could be your home or rental space. Starting a business is very rewarding but it can be overwhelming. However, like eating an elephant, you just take one bite at a time. These few bits will get you started and focused on creating your business. Having your own business can be a beautiful thing or a nightmare – so do it right. There are several books that I recommend that could be of help. I have often been referred to as the “Business Person’s Coach.” This is my specialty. If I can be of any help, please contact me. All the Best to You! Pete Contact me at my website – www.breakingfreecoaching. com or 770-977-2232.

Health & Wellness EAST COBBER Health & Wellness Expo Part of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day

Join the McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA for Healthy Kids Day on Sunday, April 17 As part of a nationwide effort to encourage kids to get moving, the McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA will host YMCA Healthy Kids Day, the nation’s largest health day for kids and families. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is filled with fun, engaging and creative activities that foster healthy living, and is a part of the YMCA’s larger efforts to help more kids and families become physically active. All activities are free and open to the public. YMCA Healthy Kids Day will kick off at 1:30 p.m. with the Easter Egg Hunt. Thousands of eggs stuffed with prizes for kids ages 0-9 to find (be sure to arrive early). Following the hunt, families can enjoy inflatables, water games, Cobb Smoke House and music. Resources will be available to help educate grownups about making healthy choices for their families every day. “Keeping kids healthy is at the core of what the McCleskeyEast Cobb YMCA stands for,” said Becky Shipley, Executive Director. “The word ‘exercise’ doesn’t sound very enjoyable to many people, especially kids, but getting them to move more through play that requires physical activity is the key to building healthy habits that last a lifetime. On YMCA Healthy Kids Day, both kids and grown-ups will have the opportunity to get moving, to play and to have fun.”

The EAST COBBER magazine is partnering with the YMCA by producing the EAST COBBER Health & Wellness Expo to be held in conjunction with the Y’s Healthy Kids Day. “The entire day is designed to celebrate healthy living and encourage kids and families to get excited about physical activity and play together, so the EAST COBBER wanted to introduce local health professionals to families seeking local resources to improve their health,” says Cynthia Rozzo, Publisher of the EAST COBBER. The EAST COBBER Health & Wellness Expo will feature: • Booths and exhibits from local health & wellness professionals • Free health screenings • Seminars and workshops • Healthy Food Court with cooking demos and samples from area chefs • Ongoing exercise and fitness demonstrations • And more! Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind opportunity to present your goods and services to over 500 health and fitness conscious East Cobb families! Find out how you can be a part of this exciting event. Yellowstone Park: A Fantastic Family Travel Destination

North Rim Artist’s Point,

Lake Yellowstone Hotel entrance

Yellowstone National Park--some say it is America’s greatest contribution to world culture. Yet when President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone Park Act on March 1, 1872, the preservation of a park more than 3,300 square miles in size (the size of Connecticut) was a radical idea. This was a time when natural resources were thought to be limitless, and conservation was considered wasteful. With the signing of the Act, a new era in conservation began. Historically, in Europe, “parks” were owned by the wealthy elite for their use alone. But in the 1800s the philosophy of romanticism evolved in Europe and spread to America. Men such as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote about nature in a new way. They described it as wondrous, beautiful, and restorative. In the mid1800s American cities began setting aside tracts of land for public parks such as Central Park in New York. Attitudes were changing. In 1870 and 1871, expeditions were sent to explore the area we now know as Yellowstone National Park. The members of those expeditions and many other Americans, influenced by this new way of viewing nature, worked tirelessly to have the Yellowstone Park Act introduced into Congress in December, 1871. Congressional debate focused on the “worthlessness” of the Yellowstone country for any “useful” purpose. The lack of any known reserves of timber, minerals, or other resources of any economic value was emphasized. Because most of the area was at or above 7,000 feet in elevation and received snow during much of the year, agriculture and settlement were considered difficult at best. Though Congressional opposition was weak, the necessity of preserving a place of such little value was questioned. In order to secure passage of the bill, supporters promised that no funding from Congress would be requested for the park’s administration. Indeed, Yellowstone received no federal funding until 1877 when it was recognized that without someone in charge, there would soon be nothing left to see as poaching and vandalism were rampant. The perception of Yellowstone has changed dramatically since the Congressional debates of 1871-1872. Today the park is host to more than 3 million visitors each year from all over the world. While still fairly remote, it is no longer inaccessible. Its geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, and wildlife are no longer thought to be worthless, but are considered priceless. The park 58 April 2011

has become an integral part of our culture and stands as a symbol, not only of American democracy, but also of the importance of preserving wild places for everyone. President Roosevelt’s speeches highlighted what he considered the central legacy of Yellowstone. Roosevelt believed the park’s lasting impact would be not the geysers, the forests, or the wild animals themselves but the idea, new in the world, that these treasures belonged to the people. And he believed we, the people, should make use of this treasure. When President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone Park Act, no one foresaw the worldwide rippling effect of his action. In the United States today there are 374 unique places where this Nation preserves its natural and cultural diversity and heritage. Furthermore, the national park idea has spread, and now more than 140 other nations have modeled their own national park systems after ours. Last September, when Cobb County schools offered a fall break in the new (and now defunct) balanced calendar, my family took off to explore this national natural treasure. Dicey weather, closed campgrounds and scarce amenities make it a bit of a gamble to visit Yellowstone National Park in the fall, but we tried our luck by touring through the park before it closed to autos for the winter season. We were pleasantly surprised. My family marveled at the scenery and raved about seeing Old Faithful without the crush of summer crowds. We also got a bargain rate on our hotel room since it was off-season. Especially memorable is the wildlife in the park. This included freely roaming and easily visible herds of buffalo, elk, grizzly and black bears, moose, and many other animals. It is one of the finest places to view wildlife in all of North America. Our base camp (I am not much of a tent and outhouse type of camper) was the Lake Yellowstone Hotel. The hotel is the oldest in the Park (built in 1891and listed on the Register of Historic Places) and has a slightly institutional atmosphere - a bit like an old fashioned ocean liner - but it’s a great location overlooking Lake Yellowstone and is in the center of Yellowstone Park. We were not prepared for the lack of amenities I am used to hotels offering: there was no TV, mini fridge or microwave in the room, and no cell phone service. So, we ate both nights in the restaurant where the food was pricey but actually quite good. Staff come from all over America and were charming. In order for my husband and I to access our emails, we had to drive 20

Undine Falls

Old Faithful miles to the next hotel that offered some cell reception—and that was still in Yellowstone Park. The long drive made us realize how expansive Yellowstone Park is. Yellowstone National Park has it all, everything a family would want on vacation. Here are just a few highlights for families, most of them free once you are in the park: Hot Springs, Mudpots, and Geysers: With half the world’s geothermal features, Yellowstone is a natural history museum in itself. Boardwalk trails allow visitors to see these geothermal features up close and personal. Your kids will be impressed by Old Faithful! Wildlife: While the grizzly bear and bison top the list of the park’s wildlife, there is much more to it than these huge creatures. Buy a guidebook, print off a list of the park’s mammals from the official park website, and see how many of the park’s animals your family can identify during your trip. And that doesn’t even include the amphibians, birds, and reptiles. Visitor Centers: The park has nine visitor centers and museums, always a good break during the day. Each center has exhibits and video screenings that will entertain at least some members of your family!

One of the great things about Yellowstone is that it is BIG and every turn in the road offers a chance to discover a new waterfall, a new geyser, or a new hiking trail. 66% of visitors come during the three summer months, leaving only 34% during the remaining nine months. I was thrilled to be enjoying the Park without the summer traffic jams I had read about and the fall offered amazing colors and animal viewing experiences. I think my favorite thing about Yellowstone is that it just makes me feel connected to nature. Both days we were there, we woke at 6 AM to do a quick drive through the Hayden Valley, searching for animals. At that time of the day, mists rose from the Yellowstone River, the bison were snorting and chasing each other, and it felt like we had Yellowstone to ourselves. The best part, for both parents and kids is that the fun is intertwined with education. Our kids were learning without knowing it! In making your decision where to go for a family vacation this summer, consider Yellowstone National Park. Our family not only enjoyed the sights and sounds of Yellowstone Park, but we hold a deeper appreciation for this American treasure as well as nature, in general. That is just what President Teddy Roosevelt had hoped for!

Ranger-Led Programs: One of the best bets in Yellowstone – and in most national parks – are the ranger-led programs. Yellowstone offers ranger talks, hikes, and kid-specific activities in seven separate areas of the park, seven days a week and almost every hour of the day during the summer. Check with the visitor centers for the schedule.. Junior Ranger Program: Kids aged 5-12 can participate in the Junior Ranger program. For a $3 fee, kids receive a 12-page activity packet. After completing the requirements, kids review their work with a ranger and receive a Junior Ranger patch. Beware, kids – if you don’t complete your work, the ranger won’t pass you! Hiking, Biking, Fishing, and More: For active families, the park abounds with outdoor adventures. Take a hike along the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, ride your bikes through campground loops at one of the many campgrounds, or bring your fishing poles and try your luck in the park’s streams and lakes. www.eastcobber.com

We believe you deserve world-class surgeons. At WellStar, you have the best of both worlds - a community health system with surgeons of the highest caliber. Not only do they perform more than 40,000 procedures every year - more than any other health system in metro Atlanta – but they also train other doctors. Surgeons from around the world and leading U.S. medical centers have come to learn the latest in minimally invasive procedures and spinal surgery. Put the most advanced medical technology in their hands – including the da Vinci robotic surgical system – and you have world-class surgical care. Even major surgery doesn’t seem so major – not when you have world-class surgeons and the most advanced technology available. Why would you have surgery anywhere else?

We believe in life well-lived.
