For over 30 years, The Music Studio Atlanta (TMSA) has been a cornerstone of musical excellence, joy, and personal and musical growth in the Atlanta community. What started as a dream to inspire a love of music has grown into an award-winning institution, constantly evolving to meet the needs of its students, families, and staff. And wow, have they come a long way! This year alone, they have been honored with four major awards: recognized by the prestigious Cobb Chamber, Best of Cobb, Atlanta’s Best, and named National School of the Year by several hundred music studio owner peers. But it’s not just about the trophies—it’s about the effort and care behind them. They have poured their hearts into every aspect of what they do: nurturing relationships with clients, supporting incredible teachers and staff, and creating a warm, inviting space where students and families feel at home.
As owner Cecilia Rowe states, “At The Music Studio Atlanta, we don’t just teach music; we build confidence. Students don’t just learn notes and rhythms—they discover themselves. Through our countless performance opportunities, students stand a little taller, smile a little brighter, and play with pride. It’s these moments that make our hearts sing!” But she’s not stopping there. TMSA is the only school in metro Atlanta with a Destination Performance series, showcasing students of all levels on worldrenowned stages. Next up: Carnegie Hall in NYC. Imagine your child performing at such an iconic venue a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! TMSA is also the only studio in the Southeast offering the award-winning preschool program Music FunTime for children ages 2-6 that introduces music fundamentals through fun, interactive play, giving
a solid foundation to excel with future private lessons. So, whether you’re an adult or parent looking for fun, rewarding music lessons, a supportive community, or simply where you or your child can thrive, come experience the difference today by calling, texting or drop by for a tour. Music isn’t just something they teach—it’s what they live for. And they can’t wait to help you shine!
Many holiday lesson packages are available through December 24th to gift the joy of music to yourself or a loved one, please see their website. The Music Studio Atlanta 2100 Roswell Road, Suite 1128 Marietta, GA 30062 404.630.3886 EastCobb@TheMusicStudioAtlanta.com www.TheMusicStudioAtlanta.com

THE ELECTION IS OVER. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR EDUCATION IN GEORGIA? By Illana Burkhart, Committee Chair for Legislative
T
he 2024 Election has come and gone, but the influence PTA and PTA members can have on educational policy in Georgia is just beginning. PTA is at its core an advocacy organization that focuses not on candidates, but to bring about changes in laws, policies and programs for the benefit of children and education. PTA does not endorse candidates or political parties. Instead we focus on the ways we can help benefit every student enrolled in a Georgia school. The decisions that most impact our students here in East Cobb will be made at the county and state levels. Our school board members, county level officials, state representatives and state senators are the ones who make decisions for our local schools. You can help shape those decisions by taking an active part in legislative advocacy. In the coming months there will be MANY ways for PTAs and parents in Cobb County to be directly involved in the decisions that shape our children’s education. There are many ways that you can have an impact on the decisions being made, but the two things that make the biggest impact are getting involved and learning about the issues firsthand. Get involved! Join your school’s PTA. East Cobb schools all have PTAs that actively work inside the school in cooperation with administrators to enhance the educational experience of every student. They publish newsletters and send out regular communications letting parents know of the happenings inside the school. Attending PTA meetings also lets you hear first hand from school leaders what new programs or policies may be coming to your school, as well as giving you an opportunity to talk with leaders in a productive manner about questions or concerns you may have. Attend a school board meeting. Cobb County Board of Education meetings are streamed online and open to public participation. A full list of meeting times and dates is found on the CCSD website. Being there in person is always better than reading about it online. And by showing up, you can show your support for the issues that are important to you. Follow the issues. Social media is great for calling attention to what the issues are and what policies are being introduced, but it is not the most reliable source www.eastcobber.com
of factual information. We urge you to go to the source and research important educational issues for yourself. This year we can expect many education bills to be introduced to the Georgia General Assembly. You can read about upcoming bills and laws being considered at each Chamber’s website. Georgia Senate Committee on Education and Youth www.legis.ga.gov/committees/senate/120 Georgia House Committee on Education www.legis.ga.gov/committees/house/102 Here are a few other sources we recommend for researching policies and upcoming legislation: Georgia Association of Educators gae.org/issues-and-action Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education gpee.org/partnership-reports/top-ten-issues/ Speak up! The most important thing a parent can do is be involved in our children’s schools and education. You can help shape the future by taking an active role in the legislative policies that govern our schools. Let your elected officials know how you feel either by calling or emailing their office. The 2025 Legislative Session will open in January and all of our Cobb County officials are eager to hear from their constituents about what we want the future of Education to look like in Georgia. Join PTA in being our kids’ loudest advocates! . Illana Burkhart grew up in Nashville, TN, but considers herself a Georgian at heart. After graduating from Furman University with degrees in Political Science and Communications, she attended graduate school at the University of Georgia, where she met her husband of 20+ years. Illana and her family moved to East Cobb in 2014, where she has worked as a freelance PR and event planning consultant. Illana has also continued her leadership in the non-profit sector. She has a passion for community engagement and has served in numerous elected positions within the local, council, and state level PTA. When she isn’t busy volunteering you can find her cheering on her sons at the Lassiter High School football or lacrosse fields.

TOYS FOR TOTS SEEKS DONATIONS
A
s the holidays are upon us and planning for Christmas arrives, it's also time to think about doing something special for children in need. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is underway giving local residents an opportunity to purchase a toy for a boy and girl outside their family. Toys for Tots started more than 75 years ago when Maj. Bill Hendricks, USMCR, and a group of Marine reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed more than 5,000 toys to needy children. Hendricks’ idea caught on and was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots the following year and expanded it into a nationwide program. In 1995, the Secretary of Defense approved Toys for Tots as an official activity of the U.S. Marine Corps and an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve. Today, Toys for Tots is the Marine Corps’ premier community action program and one of the nation’s flagship Christmas charitable causes. Toys for Tots is the only charitable endeavor within the Department of Defense which reaches outside the military establishment to give something back to the communities. Toys for Tots has enjoyed over a half century of success because of the support of millions of caring Americans, local communities, and corporate America plus the dedication and hard work of thousands of U.S. Marines. Toys for Tots is a program which brings all elements of a community together in a common cause for three months each year. The shiny new toy at Christmas lets these youngsters know that someone cares. Area Toys for Tots coordinator Kelly Wilson is in charge of finding enough money and toys to fulfill toy requests for children in the 18 counties throughout Metro Atlanta. Kelly can be reached at 678-887-5179. Toys for Tots collects only new toys. Organizers ask that toys brought to drop-off points be unwrapped so they can be sorted and given to the right child. Toys are to be appropriate for children from birth to 12 years.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY By Ginger Markert-Brusa
S
hanna Nichols of Smyrna started Sparkle Wellness in May 2024. By November, she had lost 28 pounds. Let’s get personal with Shanna.
My lifelong desire was to be a wife and mom. God’s timing did not align with my desires, but at age 36, He sent Jeff Nichols. Lifelong desire #2 also took longer than I wanted. Finally, at 42 years old, I became Tommy’s mom. I lived out my dreams for 13 years. In 2021, Jeff went to Heaven (from COVID). Since then, I have been relearning life as a widowed mom. After a 29-year corporate career, I started an organizing business. It is a blessing to help clients reclaim their spaces, relieve stress, and live more orderly lifestyles. As my life and body are morphing, my business is expanding.
LIFESTYLE CHANGE:
I have known Jacynta for 20+ years. When lamenting to my sister about needing accountability and motivation in my health, she mentioned Jacynta. My turning point was realizing if another epidemic hits, I need to be in the best health for my son. My diet was mainly processed food. Now, I eat what God made. I am still learning about reading labels and buying clean food. For the first time, I learned REAL food is more satisfying and beneficial than processed food. I have begun strength training, as well as walking, and living a more active lifestyle.
EXERCISE ROUTINE:
I strength train three times a week. I love walking with friends, getting great fellowship, and a good sweat. Jacynta encourages us to “do what you can.” Even with a current muscular issue, I still work out and do what my body allows.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE:
My biggest challenge was after giving up candy for a month. I gave in to old sugar cravings. A little weight gain was NOT worth it. I am using this as a springboard into the next part of my journey. I know there is more to lose. I do not fixate on a number on the scale; I want to get down to the place where jumping jacks do not result in belly “aftershocks.” TRIUMPHS: I stay motivated by my son and want to be actively involved in his life for as long as possible. This includes doing things he enjoys, which is generally physical activity. He sees my efforts, the results, and has embraced the healthier way I live. www.eastcobber.com

TOP 3 TIPS: 1. Share your journey. We all struggle with things. Stop hiding and start being authentic. Help others and also be willing to learn from them. 2. We hear “lift heavier” in our strength training classes. I can lift heavier than I ever thought possible (not just dumbbells but life’s struggles). I know God helps me carry whatever comes my way. 3. Do not settle or accept what has been…. do push beyond yourself and fight for goodness, health, and others. HOW HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED? Older Sparkle women have been motivators. I want to be in strength training classes, eating nutritiously, and enjoying all life offers at their age. I am an optimistic realist. Life can be hard, but we are not alone. The Lord loves us and gives us others to help us. I have found myself saying recently, “Pick your hard, Shanna.” I can put in the hard work of learning, meal planning, cooking, moving my body. Or I can endure the hard likelihood of future illness, lethargy, missed opportunities by not taking care of my wellness. CHOOSING A PRIVATE PRACTICE DENTIST When it comes to dental care, the decision of where to seek treatment can be just as important as choosing the right provider. While corporate dental chains are on the rise, there’s something uniquely valuable about choosing a privately owned dental practice. Here are some reasons why a locally owned, independent practice might be the best choice for you and your family.
Time for You You can typically expect a more relaxed atmosphere in a privately owned dental practice where appointments are scheduled with plenty of time for your questions and concerns as private practices are less likely to be driven by efficiency and patient volume. Your dentist is able to listen, explain procedures thoroughly, and even offer advice on preventative care tailored to your lifestyle. In corporate offices, dentists are often working under time constraints, so you may find it more difficult to get all of your questions answered and concerns addressed. The time spent with your dentist isn’t just about treating an issue—it’s about creating a relationship and helping you maintain a healthy, confident smile for years to come. A Strong Community Connection Privately owned practices are deeply embedded in their communities. The
dentist you see at a local practice likely lives in the same area and is personally invested in the well-being of their patients. They’re not just running a business—they’re building long-term relationships with their neighbors, supporting local charities, and participating in community events.
A Holistic Approach to Your Health Privately owned dental offices are often able to take a more holistic approach to care, focusing not just on fixing problems but on preventing them. Independent dentists are usually able to focus on a deeper connection with the philosophy of care and are often willing to spend extra time reviewing treatment options, explaining the long-term benefits, and helping you make informed decisions that align with your personal health goals. Additionally, because privately owned practices are not bound by corporate rules or quotas, they have the flexibility to offer a wider variety of treatment options tailored to each patient’s needs. This kind of autonomy allows your dentist to take a more personalized approach to both aesthetic and medical aspects of your care.
Consistency and Trust When you visit a small, privately owned office, the same dental professionals are likely to treat you
during every visit. This continuity helps build trust and ensures your dental history is well-understood, resulting in more personalized and comprehensive care. Since the same staff is often present at each visit, you have the opportunity to build a consistent rapport. Trust grows from personalized care and transparency, which is something that independent practices pride themselves on.
Conclusion: Choose Care and Connection Choosing a locally owned dental office means choosing continuity, personalized care, and a deep connection to your community. The focus is on you—your needs, your concerns, and your comfort. If you want a dentist who takes the time to listen, values your health, and treats you like family, a privately owned practice is a great choice, and your smile deserves it!
