EAST COBBER

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Happy Birthday, EAST COBBER! It has been an honor to tell the stories of our neighbors, highlight local businesses, and bring attention to the causes and events that make East Cobb such a special place to live.

Each issue of the magazine is a labor of love, and I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to connect with so many amazing people over the years. From the inspiring individuals making a difference to the businesses that help our community thrive, it’s truly been a joy to spotlight what makes East Cobb shine.

As we celebrate 31 years, I am deeply thankful for the continued support of our readers, advertisers, and the entire East Cobb community. Your trust and encouragement keep me excited to publish each new issue. Here’s to many more years of sharing the stories that unite us! Thank you for being a part of this journey, and I look forward to what lies ahead.

As the producer of the 2024 EAST COBBER Parade & Festival, I’m thrilled to share that this year’s event was truly a family affair. My own family was involved every step of the way, from organizing entries and planning logistics to volunteering on the big day. It was incredibly special to work alongside them to bring this celebration to life, and it reminded me just how much the EAST COBBER Parade is about community—and family.

But it wasn’t just my family. Families from across East Cobb contributed to the festival in meaningful ways, whether by participating in the parade, volunteering, or simply showing up to cheer along the route. There’s something magical about seeing generations working together and supporting one another to make this event a success.

This year’s parade was a dazzling showcase of East Cobb’s spirit, with creative floats, local schools, youth organizations, and businesses coming together to celebrate our community’s heart and soul. Watching everyone enjoy the day, from kids waving on the sidelines to grandparents clapping in support, filled me with gratitude for the bonds we share.

I’m incredibly thankful to everyone who helped make this year’s parade & festival unforgettable, and I can’t wait for next year’s!

On the Cover

On the cover is Dean Crowe the Founder and CEO of Rally, where she serves as the driving force behind the organization. She works closely with Rally’s Board of Directors, Board of Advisors, and Medical Advisory Board, and plays a pivotal role in leading national advocacy efforts. Dean holds a degree from Auburn University and completed the Executive Education program in Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management at Harvard Business School. Her journey in fundraising began when she served as Campaign Director for Young Life’s national camp, Sharp Top Cove—a “baptism by fire” that prepared her for future challenges.

Dean was inspired to create Rally Foundation after a personal connection to childhood cancer. When her son’s teammate was diagnosed with brain cancer, the boy’s mother asked Dean to help raise funds for childhood cancer research so that other families wouldn’t have to face the same hardships. In 2005, Dean founded Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research, with a mission to empower volunteers nationwide to raise awareness and funds for research into better treatments with fewer longterm side effects, and ultimately, to find cures.

Under her leadership, Rally has earned top ratings from charity watchdog organizations. Dean is married to Reid, Rally’s CFO, COO, and co-founder. They live in Atlanta, have two married sons, and are proud grandparents. Dean and Reid enjoy traveling, college football, and spending time with their family in their free time.

EAST COBB NATIVE HONORED BY ONCODAILY AND HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL

Dean Crowe, founder and CEO of the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research, has been named one of the Top 100 Women in Oncology by OncoDaily. This prestigious recognition celebrates “extraordinary women leaders in oncology from around the globe,” honoring their significant achievements and influence. Dean earned this accolade for her exceptional leadership in raising awareness, securing critical funding, and advocating for childhood cancer research—a crucial yet underfunded area, despite childhood cancer being the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children aged 0 to 15.

OncoDaily’s recognition reflects the “strength of the human spirit and the relentless pursuit of a future free from the shadow of cancer.” Their statement highlights how these influential women “light the way for all of us” with their courage, knowledge, and leadership, leaving a lasting impact for generations to come.

A native of East Cobb, Dean founded the Rally Foundation in 2005 after witnessing a significant gap in funding for childhood cancer research. Based in Sandy Springs with additional offices in Nashville and Pensacola, the Rally Foundation has raised over $35 million for cutting-edge research and has been pivotal in securing more than $223 million in new federal funding for child-

hood cancer. Beyond research, Rally is deeply involved in advocacy. Recently, Dean and her team led the “Rally to the Capitol” at CureFest in Washington, D.C., a march advocating for increased awareness and legislative support for childhood cancer.

This year, Rally’s advocacy efforts contributed significantly to the passage of the Accelerating Kids’ Access to Care Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. This bipartisan bill, now moving to the Senate, aims to ensure children battling cancer receive the treatment and funding they need.

Dean was also honored at the Harvard Business School Club of Atlanta’s 90th Anniversary Gala on September 19, where she received the inaugural Social Impact Award for her remarkable contributions through Rally Foundation. In 2014, Dean received the Social Enterprise Initiative (SEI) scholarship from Harvard Business School, which played a crucial role in Rally’s expansion into advocacy and its strategy for securing federal funding.

To support the Rally Foundation, consider joining Rally Fit by dedicating 47 workouts to honor the 47 children diagnosed with cancer each day, participating in Rally 4 Quarters 4 Research, or creating your own fundraiser. Learn more at RallyFoundation.org.

The 26th Annual East Cobber Parade

On a cloudy Saturday, September 14th, with the threat of rain lingering in the air but holding off, the tightknit community of East Cobb gathered to continue a cherished local tradition: the 26th annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival. Over 1,800 participants from 75 diverse groups came together to transform Johnson Ferry Road into a lively celebration of East Cobb spirit!

The parade kicked off at 10am, starting from the Mt. Bethel Elementary School parking lot. Early birds lined the street, eager to secure prime viewing spots. The procession delighted attendees of all ages with a colorful array of floats, spirited marching bands, performances from participants both young and young at heart, mascots, and vintage automobiles.

The event also highlighted East Cobb schools, honoring principals and “Teachers-of-the-Year.” Affectionately dubbed “The Candy Parade,” the EAST COBBER Parade lived up to its name, as nearly every participant generously handed out candy to the cheering crowd.

A special thanks goes out to the Cobb County Police and Cobb County Sheriff’s Office for ensuring the safety of both participants and spectators. We also extend heartfelt gratitude to the presenting sponsor, CertaPro Painters, and community sponsors, Custom Disposal & The Auto Accident Attorneys Group, for their invaluable support, which helps ensure the continued success of this beloved event, now a cornerstone of East Cobb tradition. The 26th Annual East Cobber Festival

Immediately following the EAST COBBER Parade, thousands converged at the EAST COBBER Festival held in the Johnson Ferry Baptist Church parking lot. So many enjoyed carnival games, food, live entertainment, raffles and exhibits at the EAST COBBER Festival. This hometown tradition was another excellent opportunity for East Cobb residents to unite, share their pride, and have good old-fashioned fun. A REVOLUTIONARY WAY TO TREAT TOOTH DECAY

Imagine being told by your dentist that a cavity is forming in your tooth but that it can be treated in just five minutes without drilling, needles, or discomfort. Thanks to a groundbreaking treatment from vVardis called Curodont, early cavities can now be stopped in their tracks and even reversed!

For years, the only way to fix a cavity was to drill out the decayed portion of the tooth and fill the hole with materials like amalgam or resin. While effective, it’s far from ideal. Fillings don’t repair the tooth; they simply stop further damage. Plus,

having a chunk of your tooth removed can weaken its overall structure.

But now, we have Curodont — a revolutionary, non-invasive solution that actually helps your tooth heal itself and repair it’s own enamel.

The secret to Curodont is an advanced protein-based formula that seeks out the decayed areas of your tooth and triggers a natural remineralization process. When Curodont is applied to your tooth’s surface, the formula penetrates deeply into the microscopic pores created by decay, binding to the damaged areas.

From there, it works like a patch, helping to rebuild the enamel by promoting the deposit of calcium and phosphate minerals — just as your body would naturally do to protect your teeth. In other words, Curodont doesn’t just mask the problem like a filling — it fixes the decay at its root, all without the need for drilling.

Here’s the catch: Curodont is most effective when tooth decay is caught early. That’s why regular dental visits and x-rays are crucial. While your dentist can sometimes spot cavities during a visual exam, there are areas between your

teeth and below the surface that can only be detected with an x-ray. X-rays allow dentists to spot decay before it causes serious damage, giving you the opportunity to treat it with Curodont instead of needing a filling. By seeing what’s hidden beneath the enamel, your dentist can catch issues early and prevent the need for more invasive treatments.

Treating decay early with Curodont is much more affordable than waiting until a filling or crown is needed. And since it’s non-invasive and pain-free, Curodont is ideal for treating small cavities in

children, helping them avoid a negative experience at the dentist.

Don’t wait for tooth decay to get worse. Take advantage of modern dentistry’s most innovative solution, and let your teeth heal themselves before it’s too late!

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY

Vickie Tribick joined Sparkle Wellness in July 2022 and started maintenance in March 2023. She is 53 and has lost 40 pounds since then.

Tell us about yourself, Vickie. I am a wife and mother to three children ages 21, 18 and 16. I am a communications director for a local non-profit. I have always considered myself athletic, both on water and running. I was on the varsity cross country and track teams in high school, but always battled with my weight. Between 2012 and 2018, I ran marathons, half marathons, many 10K and 5K races, and continued to yo-yo.

How did you come to find Sparkle? A good friend of mine, with similar health struggles, met Jacynta and joined Sparkle Wellness. She mentioned Sparkle, and I thought for various reasons, “I could never do that.” It was spring of 2022; my weight was up to my heaviest pregnancy weight. Menopause, the pandemic, and life contributed to my bad choices. I would make excuses for not doing things I enjoyed and wanted to be invisible.

What is the biggest challenge on your journey? Life is hard. Doing hard things has the biggest payoff. I keep track of progress with MyFitnessPal; as a runner, I love my Garmin watch. I keep a non-scale victory list. I make myself a priority. This year, my word is “revolution.” This reminds me now is not the time to be complacent; my health and wellness are worth fighting for. Recovery from unhealthy habits is resistance. I focus on forward momentum in my health journey.

What are your How-To’s? I established a spiritual routine with daily gratitude. I find joy in moving my body. I know my body can change; small, consistent, incremental changes over time will get the results I am seeking. Strength training is key, and abs are made in the kitchen. I chose to stop emotional eating. I choose how to respond to situations. Food is fuel for my body, and my body keeps score. Therefore, food will not fix feelings. I am working on healthy meal alternatives, and to not snack. Sugar is evil; it is in everything, and once you have a little, cravings continue. I don’t sabotage my best intentions by adding sugar or flavoring to my morning coffee. I am monitoring my protein to build muscle. I have become involved in a like-minded community. It is easier to do hard things with the love and support of community and friends.

What is your Exercise routine? Three days a week, I participate in Sparkle Fitness, plus running two to three times a week. Strength training has changed my appearance more than any cardio ever could. I would run to lose weight and belly fat, only to be disappointed. Little did I know I was only doing half the work because I was not eating the right things or strength training.

How has your life changed? I am more informed about how what I choose to fuel my body impacts my overall health. When I started Sparkle Wellness, one of the Ambassadors shared that she used a hanging personal hygiene travel bag to pack healthy snacks. At the time, I thought this was extreme. My husband and I just came back from an amazing trip to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, and next to my healthy snack travel bag were two recently purchased bikinis that I wore victoriously in public, feeling proud of my accomplishments!

DYSLEXIA DASH 5K SUPPORTS STRUGGLING READERS

The International Dyslexia Association

Georgia (IDA-GA) branch will host its 16th annual Dyslexia Dash this year with an anticipated 2,000 runners and walkers on hand for the fun. The 5K Run/Walk in person on Saturday, October 19 at Perimeter Mall has become a fall tradition during October as part of Dyslexia Awareness Month. Participants receive a coveted Dash t-shirt, race bag and swag and enjoy music by DJ and a phenomenal Kids Zone. Proceeds from the event are used to fund dyslexia education, scholarships and grants for teacher training, and awareness programs in Georgia. This is an ideal event for anyone interested in supporting educational options for struggling readers.

For the fourth year in a row, the event will also have a virtual component allowing participants to choose their own course, run or walk when they can, and then post their best times to our website by October 19. This year, the event anticipates more than 15 other IDA branches to participate taking this event across the U.S. in support of dyslexia training.

Last year, the Dyslexia Dash (a Peachtree Road Race Qualifier) attracted more than 2,100 participants, resulting in proceeds of about $53,000. Using funds from this event, the organization’s annual conference and individual donations, IDA-GA has provided more than $182,000 back to the community since 2017 for free and low-cost Structured Literacy® teacher training and free community outreach events.

“Recent enactment of dyslexia legislation in Georgia, has resulted in more interest in appropriate reading instruction to help struggling readers,” stated IDA-GA President Stacey Levy. “We hope our efforts not only build dyslexia awareness but help celebrate the unique strengths and talents of individuals affected by this learning difference.”

Participate in this year’s event by visiting ga.dyslexiaida.org/2024-dyslexia-dash.

Research has shown that a child who completes second grade without gaining the skill of reading has only a one-in-four chance of reading at grade level by the end of elementary school. However, with proper reading instruction, many people with dyslexia can learn to read and write well. Early identification and instruction using a multisensory, structured language approach is the key to helping individuals with dyslexia achieve in school and in life.

Levy went on to say, “This event would not be possible without our 2024 Dyslexia Dash sponsors and runners. With their support, IDA-GA will be able to offer more scholarships and grants for teacher training in the year ahead.”

FACTS ABOUT DYSLEXIA

• Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that is neurological in origin.
