TO HOST QUILT EXHIBIT
Twenty-eight “Make Your Own Masterpiece” challenge quilts are on exhibit from February 27 through April 5 at the Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center Gallery. They are from this year’s challenge competition among East Cobb Quilters’ Guild members.
East Cobb Quilters’ Guild has a long history of annual Guild quilt challenges. The theme for each year’s challenge quilt evolves from a suggestion from the Challenge Quilt Committee that allows members to use their creativity, artistic talents, and technical skills to represent their interpretations of the challenge theme. This challenge asked ECQG members to make a quilt inspired by a favorite work of art. The inspiration could be the color palette, the style or content of the painting, or the maker could choose to reproduce works of art in the public domain. In addition, entries had to fit the definition of a quilt, meet certain size parameters, and meet a deadline. Each quilt on display will be accompanied by an artist’s statement explaining their journey from “inspiration to creation.”
Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center is located at 2051 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta 30068. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 10am – 5pm. Call for evening and weekend hours. For additional information visit www.ecqg.com/challenge.

MEZZA LUNA BRINGS AUTHENTIC ITALIAN CUISINE TO MARIETTA
The Furfaro family serves handmade pasta, fresh seafood, and curated wine dinners in an intimate setting
By Marie Muir
Mezza Luna Italian Restaurant & Bar is redefining Italian fine dining in Marietta. Husband-and-wife owners Daniele Furfaro and Bella Furfaro bring their passion for authentic Italian cuisine to the community, offering an elevated dining experience at their intimate restaurant. Located at 2100 Roswell Road #2198 in the Pavilions at Eastlake, Mezza Luna features sophisticated decor, subdued lighting, and both indoor and outdoor seating. With a romantic atmosphere and a mouthwatering menu, the restaurant delivers a modern take on luxury Italian dining.
The Furfaros moved to the United States 20 years ago from Calabria, Italy. In 2021, they acquired the coveted corner space and undertook major renovations. Bella designed the interior, remodeling it with materials, furniture, and art imported from Italy—including the plates and glassware. In 2023, they celebrated the grand opening of Mezza Luna Pasta & Seafood, renaming it Mezza Luna Italian Restaurant & Bar in 2025 to reflect its expanded offerings.
Daniele’s culinary journey began at a young age, apprenticing under a pastry chef before falling in love with cooking. He attended culinary school in Italy and has collaborated with Michelin-starred chefs. As Mezza Luna’s executive chef, he crafts exquisite dishes while Bella leads front-of-house operations. Daniele also serves as head pastry chef, creating desserts such as the restaurant’s heavenly tiramisu, as well as profiteroles and gelato that are equally sublime.
“This is my passion—this is what I love to do,” Daniele says.
Savor the flavors of Italy! Grilled octopus (Polpo alla Griglia) And rich, handmade pasta (Cappellacci Cardinale)—a perfect blend of tradition and taste.
The couple has three children, all under the age of nine. Their eldest daughter often assists the restaurant’s hostess, seating guests and serving bread baskets. At Mezza Luna, every customer is treated like family, whether visiting for a date night, a family celebration, or a private event.
Mezza Luna’s menu showcases the beauty and flavor of authentic Italian cuisine. Appetizers include classics such as bruschetta, calamari fritti, and mussels alla tarantina. Regulars rave about the handmade pastas and house-made sauces. Meanwhile, the friendly staff offers their own recommendations, such as the gnocchi al pesto with blue crab meat or the black squid ink pasta with marinara sauce, mussels and shrimp. Fresh seafood and fine wines keep customers returning time and again.
“We are not fake,” Bella explains. “We make everything here. We have four different flours—one for pasta, one for pizza, one for gnocchi, and one for bread. Everything we do, we buy organic and from Italy.”
This year, Mezza Luna will host curated wine dinners featuring unparalleled Italian menus and romantic themes. East Cobbers won’t want to miss the house-made limoncello or the meltin-your-mouth chicken marsala. The restaurant is open daily, with separate lunch and dinner service hours.
Mezza Luna Italian Restaurant & Bar is on its way to becoming a family favorite in the East Cobb community, offering seasonal specials and luxury event catering. To make a reservation, order online, or inquire about events and catering, visit mezzalunamarietta.com or call 678-214-5856.
LOCAL AUTHOR RELEASES NEW CRIME NOVEL
KIWANIS CLUB HELPS LOCAL PROGRAMS AND CHARITIES
On February 20, the Kiwanis Club of Marietta Golden K added a special highlight to its regular meeting—a heartwarming check presentation ceremony. Representatives from 11 sponsored programs and sustaining charities gathered to receive generous contributions from the club, making it a truly celebratory occasion.
Local East Cobb author and professor Brandi Bradley is set to captivate readers with her upcoming crime novel, Pretty Girls Get Away With Murder, scheduled for release on March 14. Known as a self-proclaimed “cowgirl bookworm,” Bradley combines her Southern charm with a sharp literary insight that both entertains and intrigues her audience. Having spent years honing her craft as a writer and educator she brings a unique perspective to the world of crime fiction, where every small town secret can quickly escalate into a deadly affair.
Brandi Bradley is an indie author and educator who lives in East Cobb. She writes short stories and novels about crime, family drama, flea markets, cowboys, rowdy girls, and gossip. She has had short stories and essays published in Juked, Louisiana Literature, Carve, and Nashville Review. She teaches writing at Kennesaw State University. “Mothers of the Missing Mermaid” (2023) is her debut novel of secrets by the sea in Destin, Florida. Bradley’s second book, “Pretty Girls Get Away With Murder” will be released in March 2025. Learn more about her life and work at: www.brandibradley.com.
In total, $16,400 was distributed, providing vital support to organizations dedicated to serving children and the community. One delighted recipient was overheard saying, “I wish we got checks like this every Thursday!”— a testament to the impact of these contributions.
The funds were raised through the club’s annual Youth Charity Golf Tournament, held last fall. With this success, the check presentation has become a cherished annual tradition, and club members eagerly anticipate continuing the initiative next year.
To help Kiwanis members better understand the mission and services of the supported organizations, each group set up informational tables and distributed literature, fostering deeper connections between the club and the causes it supports.
Looking ahead, two key goals have been set for next year; Increasing the total amount awarded to make an even greater impact and expanding participation to involve more community members and donors.
By achieving these goals, the Kiwanis Club of Marietta Golden K hopes to make this already successful event even more impactful in the years to come. DR. MARIANNA KOVITCH OPENS MODERN DENTAL CENTER IN EAST COBB
By Marie Muir
Dr. Marianna Kovitch gave Marietta residents a new reason to smile with the opening of Modern Dental Center , located at 4608 Lower Roswell Road. After extensive renovations, the 6,000-square-foot former Mt. Bethel Community Center, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art dental destination.
The grand opening, held on Nov. 2, 2024, drew more than 200 attendees and featured food trucks, a bar, and valet parking.
Dr. Kovitch is a board-certified dentist specializing in general and family dentistry, esthetics, and sleep medicine. She is highly trained in cosmetic dentistry, including bonding, porcelain veneers, and full-mouth rehabilitation.
Originally from Saint Petersburg, Russia, Dr. Kovitch moved to Atlanta with her family in 1989 as legal refugees. She grew up in Roswell and pursued her undergraduate studies at Georgia State University, graduating cum laude with research in honors before earning her dental degree from the Medical College of Georgia.
Dr. Kovitch wanted to understand why some patients’ veneers and crowns would break. Her studies led her to the connection between sleep apnea, snoring, and dental breakdown. In 2018, she became boardcertified in dental sleep medicine by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine . Today, she offers oral appliance therapy to improve both teeth and sleep quality.
Dr. Kovitch was ready to return to her East Cobb roots after 13 years of practicing dentistry in Buckhead. She and her husband, Samuel Kovitch, an aerospace engineer for the Federal Aviation Administration and a Georgia Tech graduate, live locally with their two children, Benny, 11, and Maya, 8. The family enjoys spending time together at gymnastic competitions and baseball games, playing with their goldendoodle, Cosmo, and dining at Seed Kitchen & Bar .
Modern Dental Center is designed with patient comfort in mind, offering a luxurious yet welcoming atmosphere. Patients can enjoy a stocked beverage station, a cozy seating area, and wall-mounted televisions. The practice features top-of-the-line comfortable dental chairs equipped with nitrous oxide for especially nervous patients.
The center also boasts a spacious lecture hall available for rent for continuing education, work meetings, and more.
Dr. Kovitch is supported by a skilled team of dental assistants, hygienists, and office managers who prioritize patient care with kindness and a touch of humor. Patients can access their records and schedule appointments through the practice’s online portal.
Currently, 2,000 square feet of Modern Dental Center remains unfinished. Dr. Kovitch plans to expand by adding another dentist and a specialist to provide a variety of services under one roof.
Modern Dental Center operates as a fee-for-service practice, accepting and filing all insurance claims for patients who can go out of network. A membership option is available for those without dental insurance.
“If you are looking for a quality, family dentist who you want to grow with, that’s who I am,” says Dr. Kovitch.
Modern Dental Center is open Monday through Friday. To schedule an appointment, call 770-615-6510 or visit moderndentalcenterec.com.

FIRST NAILS IN 28TH HOME WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
On Saturday, Feb. 22, Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta, the Cobb County High School Coalition, and future homeowner David hammered the first nails in the first home build of the season in Austell. This is the 28th Habitat home built by the Habitat club students from Campbell, Harrison, Hillgrove, Pope, and Walton High School.
David is a single father of two sons and grew up in Smyrna, GA. He remembers learning about Habitat for Humanity as a child and riding his bike in neighborhoods where Habitat was building new homes for families. Now living in Dallas, he works as a mail handler at the U.S. Postal Service, a role he has held for nearly four years. David loves the physical, team-oriented nature of his job and spends his free time outdoors with his two sons, exploring parks and playing sports.
For David, homeownership means creating a legacy of love, safety, and opportunity for his family.
He’s a dedicated father eager to provide stability and a safe space for his boys and excited to partner with Habitat to build his home from the ground up. He is grateful to the sponsors, donors, and volunteers for making this dream possible.
“To see young people give up their Saturdays for nine weeks to build a house for a family in their community is an inspiration,” says Kyle Huhtanen, CEO, Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta. “We are so thankful for the longevity of this coalition and the better life they are creating for this single dad and his children.”
This year’s Habitat Club sponsors include Crystal Kidd and Abbey Christie, Campbell; Anna Eck, Harrison; Crystal Frizie, and Heather Boyle, Hillgrove; Cindy Casanova, Pope; and Jennifer McKelvey and David Dewar, Walton.

Positive Reinforcement Dog Training
Positive reinforcement dog training is force free. This method uses rewards, including treats, praise, and play, for desirable behavior, rather than punishing undesirable behavior. It’s the approach I use with all my clients–dogs, puppies, and their people!
Positive reinforcement is effective, ethical, and kind. It is enjoyable for people and their dogs. It creates enthusiastic and attentive learners. It builds confidence and a relationship based on trust. This approach to training is recommended by Veterinary Behaviorists.
Positive reinforcement training can be used to teach new skills and to modify challenging behaviors. It’s used for potty training, crate training and teaching skills like leash walking, “leave it” and “stay’.
One of my favorite things to teach is dog parkour. It is so much fun! Using rewards, you engage with your dog and the environment to teach them how to climb, jump, balance, and go over, in, and around obstacles. It can be done anywhere.
As for modifying behavior, positive reinforcement training can be used to address challenging behaviors, including shy, fearful and anxious behaviors, leash reactivity, resource guarding, over-excited mouthy behaviors, as well as aggression.
If you are interested in teaching your dog or puppy some new skills or need support in modifying a challenging behavior, please give me a call 770-971-6093 or email me kris@ bestindog.com.
I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), a Certified Dog Parkour Instructor and Evaluator with the IDPKA, and a member of the Pet Professional Guild. HOME & GARDEN
IF I AM GOING TO RENOVATE A SPACE IN MY HOME, WHAT OFFERS THE GREATEST RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI)?
I would say 100% it is the kitchen. A family spends a great deal of time in the kitchen. It is where meals are made and shared. It is where homework is done and people congregate during get togethers. Anyone that visits your home will spend time in the kitchen. It has been said, “The kitchen is the heart of the home.” There is a lot of truth to this and a well designed and functional kitchen meets the needs of everyone in the household.
Todd Peterson, Owner Peterson Pressure Washing
CAN YOU WASH MY HOUSE, TOO?
Yes, we do a Soft House Wash that gets rid of any dirt, grime and mildew. We apply very little pressure as not to damage anything on the home. Helps give your home that freshly painted look and saves the paint also.
WHY DO YOU HATE CONTRACTORS? A.
It sounds absurd for a general contractor to say he hates contractors, but let me explain. In my nearly 10 years of owning Apex Southern Homes, I’ve walked through hundreds if not thousands of homes. I’ve sat around dining room tables, shaken hands, and looked in the eyes of countless clients. And every one of them has a story to tell me about a bad experience they have had with a contractor or a horror story of somebody they know who hired a contractor that took their money and disappeared. Frankly, I’m sick of it. It’s an embarrassment to our profession. I founded my company on core values that include highest quality craftsmanship, a commitment to excellence, guided by integrity, and personalized customer service experience. The way we do things shouldn’t be a rarity – it should be the industry standard.
Michael Shaw, Owner Easy Reach Drawers
A.
THERE IS A PIECE OF WOOD BETWEEN MY CABINET DOORS. CAN YOU STILL INSTALL PULL-OUT
DRAWERS?
Yes! A stile is a vertical piece found in some face-frame cabinets to cover the space between two doors. One option is to leave the stile in place and use narrower drawers behind each door. The other option is to cut the stile out and reattach it to the left door. This preserves the original look of the cabinet when the doors are closed, but creates one large opening when the doors are open. In this case, the new drawers will span the entire width of the space.
I’M THINKING ABOUT ADDING A SUNROOM. WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER BEFORE GETTING STARTED?
A sunroom is a great way to enjoy natural light and outdoor views year-round. Here’s what to consider: Usage: A 4-season sunroom offers insulation and climate control, while a 3-season sunroom is for mild weather. Location: Built on an existing deck, concrete slab, or as an addition—each may need modifications. Materials: Energy-efficient glass and quality framing ensure durability. Permits & HOA: Check local regulations. Builder Reputation: Research reviews and experience before hiring. For expert sunroom solutions, visit dcenclosures.com or call 770-796-4654.

APEX SOUTHERN HOMES PRIORITIZES QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP
By Adam Darby
Making large-scale changes and renovating the cherished place you call “home” is no simple task. Like anything important in life, you must uphold high expectations to ensure your home renovation or new construction project is everything you’ve envisioned. Unfortunately, low industry standards mean many clients often don’t have the kindest words to say about their experience working with contractors. In fact, the home renovation industry is plagued by untrustworthy contractor “horror stories.”
Chuck and Ellie Church, the owners of Apex Southern Homes, understand these struggles firsthand and founded their company on principles of providing the highest quality craftsmanship, delivering excellence in every project, being guided by integrity, and offering a personalized customer service experience. When asked why they uphold these values, Chuck responded, “Operating with integrity shouldn’t be a rarity—it should be the industry standard.” As committed professionals in Greater Atlanta, Chuck, Ellie, and their team take pride in collaborating with clients to ensure each new build and renovation is everything they’ve been dreaming of.
“Everyone has a bad experience or can share a story about working with a contractor. So, people are skeptical,” Chuck Church said. “We pride ourselves on meeting these customers where they are and easing their minds so that they can trust us. We also inform them about the feedback from other customers who have worked with us, reassuring our clients every step of the way by saying, ‘We are going to come in, do a really nice job, and exceed your expectations.’”
What started in January 2017 with single-room remodels and minor home updates multiplied through referrals and wordof-mouth. Their projects quickly grew into bathroom, kitchen, and basement renovations before Apex Southern Homes began taking on new construction and luxury home renovations. Chuck and Ellie said they owe their success to the amazing clients who have championed them in the community, saying, “Over 80 percent of our new clients find us through word of mouth referrals. We’re proud to have earned a great reputation from the clients we’ve worked with.” Rather than simply claiming to stand out from competitors, the two spouses and co-owners are happy to let the quality of their work speak for itself.
Chuck is an East Cobb native, and Chuck and Ellie started their family in the Pope District, meaning the area has always had a special place in their hearts. As Ellie Church said, “When we started the company, 100 percent of our work was in East Cobb. Then, about five years ago, we moved and expanded into the Alpharetta and Milton area.” As they expanded, they noticed a shocking lack of professionals among the home remodeling contractors in the area, inspiring them to bring their value standards to more homeowners. “We’re being invited to bring our expertise into really high end homes and very discerning homeowners, and they need the craftsmanship and quality to be top-notch. Oftentimes, that level of quality and craftsmanship seems to be missing from this trade of work.”
Chuck’s commitment to operating the business with excellence and integrity was founded in his years of serving his country in the United States Marine Corps and spending many years in business management. He knows the meaning of putting in the hard work to help others. Each day, Chuck, Ellie, and their team bring the same level of commitment to every project.
Speaking of their renovation goals, Chuck said, “When we finish a project, we don’t want our client to recognize their home. It’s so satisfying for us and the customer to look at before and after pictures, and we love sharing in their joy when they see their new home.”

BIG SKY CONSTRUCTION HELPS EAST COBB FAMILY BUILD THEIR DREAM PATIO
By Marie Muir
Big Sky Construction Services helped homeowners Meg Ross and Brian Ross build their dream covered patio in the Penhurst neighborhood in 2024. The project, which took three and a half months from start to finish, expanded their home by adding a year-round entertainment space. Natural-stained cedar and polished concrete floors give the 26-by-16-foot outdoor living area a warm, rustic vibe.
At the heart of this outdoor gathering space is a massive natural stone fireplace made with Tennessee fieldstone. “The stacked stone fireplace is a work of art,” Meg said.
Big Sky has built a strong reputation for designing and constructing beautiful patios and porches in East Cobb. The Ross family chose them based on raving reviews from fellow Penhurst neighbors. Now, Meg, Brian, and their daughter, Annie, love spending time on the covered patio with their miniature schnauzers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Bean, ages 3 and 1, respectively.

& WELLNESS
THE FITNESS CLIFF
by Jermaine Alexander
The time has come when the New Year’s resolution-makers are about to fall off from their wellness program. The fitness industry calls this the “Fitness Cliff.” The gyms are about to start getting less usage as people who started very motivated have not reached their goal, and now they are going to quit. Some cancel their membership, while others continue to pay their membership dues but don’t go to the gym.
Staying motivated is very challenging when life happens. Taking children to school, after-school events, work, and when all the other things we do daily come up, the one thing we tend to give up on quickly is our wellness goals. We suffer from what I call “Confirmation bias” i.e. allowing our mind to convince us that what we believe to be true - is true! In other words, we didn’t think we would get to a specific wellness goal, and we didn’t achieve it so it’s time to give it up. Below are three tips on how to stay motivated and disciplined on your fitness goals and how not to fall victim to what everyone who made those New Year’s resolutions fell victim to between February fourteenth and March thirty-first –“THE FITNESS CLIFF”
1. Hire an accountability coach: Eighty percent of people who hire a coach/personal trainer achieve the goal they have set for themselves.
2. Find a workout/wellness partner: No different than a hair, nail, doctor, or dentist appointment – we are scheduled with someone who can hold us accountable – people sharpen people like iron sharpens iron.
3. Change your surroundings: This takes discipline, we become a product of the environment that we place ourselves in, if you have a health club membership, use it!
In closing, my definition of discipline is doing what you hate to do the most as if you love it. Better yet, doing what you said you would do long after the mood that you said it in has gone. The tips above will assist you in staying disciplined because when motivation fails you, discipline is there to lift you back up – see you at the TOP!

THE MOUTH: A WINDOW TO OVERALL HEALTH
As a dentist for over 20 years, I have always been passionate about helping patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles. When I began my career, I envisioned transforming smiles with cosmetic dentistry, restoring missing teeth with natural looking implants, and ensuring families had excellent oral health. While I still love doing those things, my understanding of dentistry has evolved. The longer I practice, the more I recognize the deep connection between oral health and overall well-being. The mouth is truly a window to the body, often revealing signs of underlying health conditions.
At Cheek Dental, our approach to dental care has expanded to consider the bigger picture of health. Through advanced
education and personal experiences, I’ve learned that issues like cavities, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and even behavioral concerns in children can be linked to broader systemic factors. For example, we know that acid reflux from sleep apnea can contribute to cavities, while poor nasal breathing affects nitric oxide levels, which play a role in blood pressure and inflammation. We also discuss gut health, probiotics, and diet because they impact not only digestion but also the body’s ability to fight disease and maintain strong teeth and gums.
For our younger patients, we pay close attention to airway development and facial growth, as they can contribute to issues like sleep disorders, speech
problems, allergies, and even behavioral challenges. By addressing these concerns early, we can help set children up for a lifetime of better health.
A visit to the dentist is no longer just about cleaning teeth or fixing cavities. By taking a whole-body approach, we help patients achieve not only healthier smiles but also improved overall wellness. Your mouth can reveal a lot about your health—let’s make sure it tells a story of vitality and well-being.

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY
By Ginger Markert-Brusa
Marie Damm is 64 years old and has lost 58 pounds. She is a full-time caretaker for her 35-year-old daughter with physical and intellectual disabilities. Here is how she achieved good health while doing the work.
I have been married to Gary for 39 years and have two daughters, Brittney, and Kristin. Brittney is 35 and is developmentally disabled.
A close friend, Kassie Bohannon, introduced me to Sparkle Wellness in August 2017. Since starting Sparkle, I have made new healthy habits that have helped me regain my health. I made slow, consistent changes.
First, I eliminated bread since it was my comfort when I felt stressed. I now eat an apple a day, and I continue doing both every day.
Second, I focused on increasing healthy protein, including tuna, chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, salmon, and beans. I eat a rainbow of healthy fruits and vegetables. I switched to heart-healthy avocado and olive oil and included nuts and seeds. I eliminated most highly processed foods and sugar. Step by step, I replaced unhealthy foods with healthy alternatives.
The next step was steadily increasing my daily activity. At first, my exercise included walking and simply moving more. I prioritize strength training. I love going to the pool and using foam dumbbells and ankle weights to build muscle. When I cannot go to the pool, I work out at home.
Two or three times a week I go to the aquatic center with my daughter and a friend. It is a great type of exercise for us, as my daughter has difficulty walking and she gets the benefit of exercising without putting much weight on her feet. The pool makes me feel refreshed and relaxed. On Saturday mornings I walk and talk for about an hour with another friend, which brings us joy and a sense of accomplishment. On other days, I strength train with dumbbells at home. I now look forward to exercising; it makes me feel strong. The more you do, the more you can do.
Sparkle has a different approach to weight loss. I have been overweight my entire life and have yo-yo dieted since the age of 8. Sparkle Wellness promotes healthy lifestyle changes instead of a quick fix. I replaced unhealthy foods with healthy alternatives. The food I eat keeps me satiated, energetic, and happy. I am finally at peace with food.
Above: Marie Damm before: July 2017, 57 years old, 200 pounds. Right: Marie Damm after: September 2023, 63 years old, 142 pounds.
I use the MyFitnessPal app to monitor my food and nutrition. I track what I eat daily and have set goals for protein and fiber intake. MyFitnessPal also helps me determine how many calories I should eat daily to lose or maintain weight.
My real motivation comes from caring for family members who have suffered from dementia. Once I learned a healthier lifestyle may prevent dementia and other diseases, I was truly ready to make the necessary changes.
I am also motivated by the need to be mentally and physically strong for my daughter. Before Sparkle, I suffered from depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, heartburn, and more. I often rewarded myself with food to comfort myself. I realized binge eating made me feel worse, not better. Since losing weight, I no longer have these health issues and have maintained my weight for more than 7 years.
Sparkle Wellness has changed my whole outlook on life. I have learned to be grateful every day and to find joy in all things. I feel confident and powerful. I am accomplishing things I never knew were possible!

PORCH MARIETTA DONATES 100,000+ POUNDS OF FOOD TO MARIETTA FOOD PANTRIES
PORCH Marietta, an all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to reducing food insecurity, celebrates its third anniversary by announcing it has donated over 100,000 pounds of groceries to Marietta food pantries since its inception in February 2022. This translates into over 83,000 meals for neighbors in need.
In 2024, PORCH Marietta’s network of participating neighborhoods held 398 food drives and delivered more than 54,000 pounds of food to serve over 44,000 individuals. They also helped start a new food pantry serving students at Marietta Middle School. In addition, PORCH Marietta used financial donations to provide over $4000 worth of fresh milk and eggs to the Center for Family Resources and a year’s worth of snacks for students at each of 12 different Cobb County and Marietta City Title 1 schools.
“In 2025, we are seeing a growing number of people facing food insecurity,” said Liz Platner, chapter leader of PORCH Marietta. “By picking up a few items next time you’re shopping and leaving them on your porch or by contributing financially, you can help us make a meaningful change in Marietta. This is the power of crowdsourcing - individual donations of all sizes create a big impact.”
PORCH Communities was started in 2011 in Chapel Hill, and there are now over 550 neighborhoods in 13 states serving their local communities. PORCH chapters have collectively distributed more than $15 million worth of food to neighbors in need. The PORCH Marietta chapter was founded in February 2022.
Contributing non-perishable food to 15 local food pantries on a monthly basis is the flagship program of PORCH Marietta. To date, PORCH Marietta has donated over 100,000 pounds of food to these pantries. They collect food via monthly neighbor-
hood food drives, based on customized wish lists from the pantries. Neighbors put the requested groceries out on their porch and volunteers pick up and deliver them to the pantries. Currently there are over 50 Marietta neighborhoods participating. To add your neighborhood to the team, contact marietta@porchcommunities.org. For more information or to make a financial contribution, visit porchcommunities.org/porch-marietta.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS IN THE SPRING MONTHS
Spring is a season of renewal, making it the perfect time to focus on health and wellness. As temperatures rise and nature blooms, people feel more motivated to adopt healthier habits that boost physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
One of the best ways to embrace spring wellness is by getting outdoors. The longer daylight hours and milder weather encourage activities like walking, jogging, cycling, and hiking. These exercises not only improve cardiovascular health but also enhance mood by increasing endorphin levels. Exposure to sunlight provides a natural source of vitamin D, essential for bone strength and immune function.
Spring also brings an abundance of fresh, seasonal foods that nourish the body. Leafy greens, berries, asparagus, and citrus fruits are packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber. Incorporating these into meals supports digestion, boosts immunity, and provides sustained energy. Staying hydrated is equally important, as increasing temperatures can lead to dehydration.
Mental wellness also benefits from the season’s rejuvenating energy. Practicing mindfulness, meditation, or yoga in a natural setting can reduce stress and improve mental clarity. Spring cleaning is another great way to enhance well-being— decluttering living spaces creates a more peaceful and organized environment, reducing anxiety and promoting productivity.
Additionally, spring is an ideal time to reset sleep habits. The increased natural light helps regulate circadian rhythms, improving sleep quality. Avoiding screen time before bed and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can enhance overall restfulness and energy levels.
By embracing outdoor activities, nourishing the body with fresh foods, and prioritizing mental wellness, spring can be a transformative time for health. Taking small, intentional steps now can set the foundation for a vibrant and energized season ahead.
