On pages 7-16, we pulled together those education stats, school by East Cobb school—which provides evidence for East Cobb’s great reputation of its schools. While the test scores offer a quick take that helps parents and teachers measure a school’s success, it is important to note that beyond the rankings, each school needs to be assessed for other qualities, such as: strong school leadership, parental and community support, creating an environment where students can learn and grow, as well as

FINDING A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE AT FITNESS TOGETHER EAST COBB
Customized, flexible and private describe the workout regimens as well as the facility at Fitness Together East Cobb. Celebrating its 15th anniversary in the community, Fitness Together continues to help East Cobbers achieve a healthier lifestyle. From very early on Monday mornings through Saturday afternoons, trainers and clients work together on individual fitness goals. On a recent Friday morning, Trainer Sean Sullivan and East Cobb resident Tristina McElreath met at 9:45 a.m. and immediately jumped into a workout designed specifically for her preferences and needs in an exercise suite that allows for privacy and no distractions. A thorough review of Tristina’s fitness goals had revealed that she liked and had participated in kickboxing. So Sean incorporated kickboxing into her fitness program. “There is so much I like about Fitness Together,” says Tristina. “The reason I first decided to check it out was because I wasn’t making time for me with a busy family and work. I needed to get back on course with a fitness routine, and I discovered how to do that at Fitness Together. Scheduling workouts is flexible and fits easily into my schedule. The trainers focus on form, safety and helping clients with a workout that’s best suited for them, as well as provide helpful nutritional information. It was also great how Sean took the time to find out that I liked kickboxing and then worked it into my routine. And, so important to me, is that it’s always clean – no gym smell ever and no sweaty mats from the client before.” Owners Mike and Katie Warechowski have been a part of Fitness Together East Cobb since it first opened in 2002. The couple met while
obtaining degrees in exercise and health science at Kennesaw State University. Mike was the first trainer hired at the East Cobb location, and Katie joined a year later. Then in 2007, the owner decided to sell the business, and the Warechowskis became the new owners. Ten years later, the Warechowskis employ a fitness center manager and six trainers while they operate the administrative aspects of the business. Fitness Together East Cobb recently moved to a new location at 1000 Johnson Ferry Road, Building 400, Suite 412 (across the street from Johnson Ferry Baptist Church) to better accommodate its clients. With many fitness centers in the community, Katie says several factors set Fitness Together apart from its competitors. One of the main factors is the privacy that is offered in the studio layout. She explains: “Our fitness studio is comprised of four private suites, which is beneficial for both the client and trainer. For the client, there is no pressure to compete with others and no intimidation surrounding the workout. It’s all about that client and his or her individualized program. For the trainer, there are no distractions and no other trainers using the same equipment. This scenario allows for an efficient workout.” Katie goes on to explain that just like Tristina and the incorporation of kickboxing into her routine, each client receives a one-on-one assessment of his or her current fitness level. “Not only does the trainer help that person get to where he or she wants to be in terms of a healthier lifestyle, but the trainer also customizes the routine to the client’s specific likes and dislikes,” says Katie. “Our trainers establish detailed goals and then track those
goals to ensure they are met and maintained. And it’s important to add that all the trainers know what they are doing. They have college degrees in exercise science or in a related field and are nationally certified.” According to Katie, most of their clients are in the 40s, 50s and 60s age range and are looking to “reclaim their health.” Many are starting from scratch, having never worked out or having not worked out in a long time. Along with a customized program, each client receives nutritional counseling. Small group training sessions are also provided for those who like the camaraderie of working out with others. These consist of two to six people and focus on circuit training, cardio and strength. Fitness Together East Cobb offers 45-minute sessions for both individual and small group training. Monthly memberships are available, and custom and package rates are competitive. Hours are Monday-Friday, 6:00 a.m.-7:30 p.m., and Saturday, 6:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. If you are interested in checking out Fitness Together, mention EAST COBBER Magazine and you can receive an introductory offer of three sessions for $99.00. For more information, visit www.fitnesstogether/eastcobb or call 770-321-1347. With 15 successful years behind them, the Warechowskis plan to continue maintaining their signature family-style environment. Promoting flexibility and customized programs for their clients will also continue to remain at the forefront of their business. Long-term growth may entail opening a Fitness Together facility in a neighboring community.

COBB COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES 2018 BUDGET
T
he Cobb County School board unanimously approved a $1.026 billion General Fund budget for fiscal year 2018. The budget includes a 1.1 percent bonus for all employees at a cost of $8.2 million.
The board also approved a $1,000 bonus for those who are named Teacher of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year at their respective schools. The Cobb County School District (CCSD) is committed to meeting the needs of our students and staff while remaining good stewards of taxpayer dollars. The district’s Fiscal Year 2018 General Fund budget is tight. The reality is while the overall economy has improved, the district faces revenue budget challenges to fund increasing costs in future years. In the future, CCSD will struggle to maintain what it currently has in the budget with funding going primarily into three areas: 1. Student growth 2. Increased health insurance costs 3. Employee salary step increases Despite the tight budget, CCSD continues to focus available funding on teachers and classrooms. District operational and school support

costs are generally lower than other districts. In addition, our expenditures per student are generally lower than other metro Atlanta districts. The District continues to keep taxes low for Cobb County citizens by maintaining a millage rate of 18.90 Mills that has not been changed since 2007. Finally, for 10 years, the District has had no long Chris Ragsdale, Cobb County School term debt. The Cobb Superintendent County School District is one of the top-tiered school districts for credit ratings in the entire country maintaining a AAA credit rating from Moody’s Investor Service since 2015. The Cobb County School District is the second largest school system in Georgia and the 23rd largest in the nation. It serves 113,000 students and 114 schools, including 67 elementary schools, 25 middle schools, 16 high schools, one charter school, one special education center, one adult education center and one performance learning center..

DOES YOUR CHILD’S DISORGANIZATION DRIVE YOU CRAZY? MAYBE IT’S SOMETHING MORE.
By Laura Finnell, M.Ed, High School Principal, The Cottage School Your child has been in school for several weeks and the cycle is starting again: homework battles, lack of time management skills, papers everywhere and no end in sight. Many families experience children who can be messy and disorganized and sometimes it’s a simple matter of finding the right organizational system. For others, difficulty with planning, sequencing, and initiating tasks, often coupled with impulsivity and a low tolerance for frustration, is a sign of Executive Dysfunction. Difficulty organizing their things and their time can be key indicators—as though the secretary in the front of our brain, the one who helps us organize and keep track of our lives, has fallen asleep. Break Tasks Down into Smaller Steps At The Cottage School, we have learned that students need their responsibilities broken down into smaller steps. They need tasks spelled out so that they can link sequences of events or tasks and understand how they are related. Identify a System to Try Make a list of several “big picture goals”. Put yourself in the role of coach to help your child identify what needs to be achieved, and what steps need to be taken to get there. Instead of telling her what to do, I knew my daughter needed to feel empowered to achieve her goals on her own. We developed a system with a dry erase board and a list, where we both write on it, and she helps decide the routine and order. She even picked out a pink dry erase board and special markers for it. Six years later, this system still works for us. Make It Fun Don’t forget to add goals that are motivating and fun to the list. Her fun activities, like phone or pool time, should be on there too. By including them on the list, she learns to check off ‘chore’ items first to get to the fun stuff. Remember, every family and every child is different, so try new systems to find what works for your child.

SAT STATS:
EAST COBB HIGH SCHOOLS The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and the American College Testing (ACT) are offered by The College Board several times during the year. These tests are not required by the state or school system, and are not administered by Cobb schools; however, most colleges and universities use SAT and/ or ACT scores in determining student admission. The SAT is used to predict a student’s potential for success in the first year of college and is required for admission to most colleges and universities. Most college-bound students take one or both of these tests during either their junior or senior year. The following chart displays SAT scores from the Class of 2016 (the last available scores released from Cobb County School District) attending East Cobb high schools. LOCAL PTAS COLLABORATE WITH OUR COMMUNITY
By Kristy Flowers and Kimberly Webb, Co-Presidents, East Cobb County Council of PTAs “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” ~Helen Keller
T
he East Cobb County Council of PTAs welcomes all students attending the 35 schools that are members of our council and their families to another wonderful year of learning. Our students attend Kell, Lassiter, Pope, Sprayberry, Walton and Wheeler High Schools and their feeder elementary and middle schools. Those of you who are members of our PTAs understand that our students and our schools are our responsibility! One of the National PTA Standards for Family-School Partnerships is collaborating with community. PTAs and PTSAs exist in our East Cobb schools to bring additional value to our children’s education. The ECCC PTA collaborates with the students, parents and educators inside of our schools as well as the community in which the schools are located to make our schools stronger and our students more successful. PTAs of East Cobb supplement our children’s quality education through events and programs that promote Diversity and Inclusion, Health and Wellness, and Arts Appreciation. These and other PTA programs add to the classroom learning that our children receive by exposing them to unique opportunities within their school community as well as within the greater community that surrounds them. The ECCC PTA encourages new families to join their school’s PTA or PTSA and see the benefits that our members find through the many PTA activities and services that help make our East Cobb schools some of the best in the state of Georgia. Your school’s PTA/ PTSA provides and supports efforts to offer a variety of educational programming, communication tools, familyfun activities and events to thank our teachers and school staff. Your PTA also has the tools to amplify your voice to advocate on behalf of all our children. Together as a council of PTAs/PTSAs, our voice is stronger in speaking on behalf of our children to our elected officials on issues

that affect our schools. Earlier this year the ECCC PTA educated our members about the upcoming Ed-SPLOST ballot referendum and encouraged parents to get out and vote. The referendum passed and the funds raised will greatly benefit our students and our schools through needed capital improvements in the years to come. The ECCC PTA is thankful for the many community businesses and partners who work very hard to support our teachers, our principals and our families and students as we work to give our children an opportunity to prepare for future careers. We are especially excited to watch our local businesses, through the efforts of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, partner with Cobb and Marietta schools, Kennesaw State University, Chattahoochee Technical College, Life University and Georgia Highlands College to create the Cobb Workforce Partnership. The partnership is committed to establishing a pipeline of talented workers by aligning the needs of high demand careers with the education efforts at our schools. Our success is due to your hard work which empowers your children, your family and your community. Your continued involvement in the community will maintain the quality of living that all East Cobbers now enjoy! Our children and our schools are our responsibility! Kimberly Webb is the Co-President of the East Cobb County Council of PTAs. She previously served as the Co-President and Secretary of the Timber Ridge Elementary School PTA and resides in Marietta with her husband, Trey, and children, Caroline, Emma Jane and Davis. Kristy Flowers is serving her 2nd year as President of the East Cobb County Council of PTAs. She resides in Fox Hills subdivision with her husband Jim and 2 sons who attend Sope Creek Elementary and East Cobb Middle School.

GREG HYDE IS A FINANCIAL ADVISOR YOU CAN TRUST
Greg Hyde
Let’s talk about money. More specifically, your money. Do you have an advisor you trust on your journey through life, whether it’s planning for a home, college or retirement? Edward Jones advisor Greg Hyde is someone you can count on to give you financial guidance that will give you peace of mind.
SnappHelp
Connects Consumers with Expert Service Providers Do you have a need for a plumber, maid service or graphic designer that is local and available? Are you a programmer, tutor or handyman seeking local or national work? Two East Cobbers recently created the free SnappHelp mobile app that connects service providers with consumers.
Greg has more than 20 years of experience working in various types of financial institutions, but he finds it more rewarding to work directly with people. He is focused on what is important to your financial security where recommendations are based on specific goals, risk tolerance and investment objectives. Greg works with clients to establish pre- or post-retirement solutions, college savings and small company retirement service plans. He listens to their specific goals and offers customized strategies to help them reach their goals. As an Edwards Jones advisor, he has access to some of the best industry investment and technology systems, which make it easier to support clients. Edward Jones is known in the industry for focusing on serious, long-term investors while emphasizing quality and diversification. Greg also reviews investment accounts held at other firms and provides a second opinion. Through his research, he finds that many times we can improve on the level of risk and quality of the investments. With a strong belief system in giving back, Greg volunteers as a Stephen’s Minister at Mt Bethel United Methodist Church and acts as a SCORE mentor at the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Greg is a local East Cobb family man who loves to golf and spend time with his wife, kids and grandchildren. His wife, Bonnie, is a recognized pastel artist with a gallery at Frame Up II in Marietta. When working with his clients, Greg likes to look at their big financial picture and takes the time to review family budgets in order to improve future results while helping clients meet their goals. “My office is open to anyone with any size account, and I pledge my full attention and time to provide each person, family or company with high quality solutions,” says Greg. He advises his clients that they shouldn’t navigate investments on their own. “I learn something new every day. I can’t imagine trying to create and monitor solid investment solutions part time.” To learn more about Investment Planning and to set up a free consultation, contact Greg Hyde at 678-402-5460 or greg.hyde@edwardjones.com. SnappHelp makes it easy to find help. For example, if you need an electrician, you simply select the service you need, enter your request and click “Send.” Your request is automatically delivered to local electricians. Available electricians then respond directly to you through the app with their availability and pricing. On the other hand, if you want to market your skills or services as a tutor, photographer, graphics designer or any other service, simply add your skills and services when you sign-up. You will start receiving requests from other users in your area. Additionally, users can rate each other and see a star rating for service providers. This app is unique because you are not simply shown a list of providers for your needs, but a direct secure connection is made between you and the provider when you make a request and a provider responds to your request. It’s free for both providers and users, and there are no hidden fees or ads. What started out as an idea by founder Sony Roundhill for connecting odd jobs with providers turned into a mobile application that can help consumers, freelancers, recruiters and job seekers. Sony partnered with Jay Hodges, IT expert and fellow East Cobb dad, to launch the app. “SnappHelp gets stronger as more and more people register, and I’m happy that we can match consumers with someone who can meet their needs quickly and easily,” said Sony. “SnappHelp has unmatched privacy features which allows users to delete their requests and messages from other users’ devices as needed,” he added. The app is Apple and Android friendly. Visit the Apple iTunes App store or Google Play Store to download, or visit www.snapphelp.com for the download link.

COBB SCHOOLS EXTEND SCHOOL DAY ON AUGUST 21 DUE TO SOLAR ECLIPSE
O
n Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun’s tenuous atmosphere - the corona - can be seen, will stretch from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun’s disk. To ensure the safety of all students during the upcoming partial solar eclipse, the Cobb County School District will delay dismissal of students for approximately 45 minutes on Monday, August 21. Buses at elementary, middle, and high school levels will depart approximately 45 minutes after their normally scheduled time. The peak time to experience the solar eclipse falls during the school’s regularly scheduled elementary school dismissal time. Since student safety is always our first priority Cobb Schools will start the day on time and delay dismissal to ensure that neither students nor employees are on the roadways during the time of the
www.eastcobber.com
eclipse. Subsequently, high schools and middle schools will delay dismissal as well. Schools will be provided with further guidance and instructional resources as appropriate. Parents are welcome to pick-up their child at the typical dismissal time if needed. On August 21, the continental United States will see its first total solar eclipse in 38 years. The shadow of the moon will cross the country, touching land in Oregon and leaving from South Carolina, providing an opportunity for what may be an unprecedented number of people to witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon. Total solar eclipses are a big deal not because of how infrequent they are — there’s a total solar eclipse every 18 months on average — but because of how little of the Earth’s surface falls in the path of any given eclipse shadow. The next total solar eclipse to visit the US will be in 2024. For more information regarding the solar eclipse visit the National Weather Service at www.weather.gov/sgf/ SolarEclipse.

EAST COBBER
www.eastcobber.com
Iconic Chicago’s Steak, Seafood, and Pasta Cooking Up New Dishes with New Owners West USA. I was drawn back to my home town in Georgia and my first passion, food. Acquiring Chicago’s was the perfect synergy—we are both getting back to our roots.” Chicago’s Manager Ben Petway has compiled a team of professional servers and chefs that share the same enthusiasm the new owners do. Ben and Mark are truly hands on, personally checking on guests table side and jumping into the kitchen as needed.
Chicago’s Management Team
For over 25 years East Cobbers have made Chicago’s their special celebration destination. But new owners Mark Zwolak and his son Connor Murray are shaking up the East Cobb dining scene to spread the word that there is a plethora of new reasons for foodies to check in and check out the “New” Chicago’s, coming full circle back to its roots. Beloved classic dishes that have made the restaurant the eatery of choice will most likely remain on the menu and Mondays will highlight rotating classic dishes guests came to love such as tenderloin beeftips. They will be introducing a Taco Tuesday night, Wednesdays are Ladies night with $5 martinis and on Thursdays, the fun explodes with trivia night in the SpeakEasy Lounge. Also new is an expanded appetizer menu at the bar, including beer cheese and pretzels and craft beers, many from local brewers. The restaurant leadership takes great pride in sourcing produce from local growers and using seasonal fruits and vegetables for signature dishes and homemade desserts. Mark, an East Cobb native and Lassiter High School graduate is also a UGA alum with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration, later receiving an M.B.A. from KSU, focusing on Entrepreneurship. He put himself through college by working in Athens at local restaurants, including De Palma’s Italian Café and even before graduating, was charged with opening its second location. “I managed Houston’s in Atlanta, the renowned Magnolia’s in Charleston then took a different turn, working in corporate finance for many years internationally and in the South
Spencer Vinson, a life-long Cobb resident, started at Chicago’s as a Line Cook, then Sous Chef but his culinary talents could not be ignored and he was promoted to Executive Chef by the new owners. His cooking career started interestingly as a submarine Chef for the Navy and after returning to dry land, he worked at other local fine dining establishments. Spencer felt completely at home with the evolving concept at Chicago’s. “I know this kitchen like the back of my hand. I know what our long-time clientele craves but am excited to experiment with new dishes and flavors for our guests.” states Vinson. The other half of the father and son team, Connor, recently graduated from UGA’s Terry School of Business with a degree in Finance. When pushed to vote for his favorite item at Chicago’s, he steered away from food for a moment and voted for the classic chalkboard on the wall, an internal “Yelp” review of sorts for customers to recommend dishes they have really loved. “It is a stellar way for us to get direct feedback about what we are doing right and encourages other guests to take a chance on ordering something they may not ordinarily eat.” Chicago’s Steak and Seafood is located at 4401 Shallowford Road, Roswell, 30075. Hours are Sunday-Monday: 5-9pm; Tuesday-Thursday: 5-10pm; Friday-Saturday: 5-11pm. Chicago’s also offers early dining service Sunday-Thursday, 5-6:30pm.
