“I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever.” Psalm 145:1 NLT
A Message From Our Senior Pastor
August 2017
While we are on a hiatus from Bible Study, Sunday School, FFI classes, etc. during the month of August, don’t take a break from praying, meditating, and daily reading of God’s Word. I encourage you to reflect on God’s Majesty (Psalm 8:1) and how God has helped you overcome obstacles, provided financial support, comforted you during your time of need, and the overall goodness of God. I’ve recently taken time myself to reflect on the blessings of Eastern Star Church and its ministries; we have accomplished several great things in the community, nationally, and globally during 2017! Below are a few highlights: Haiti Mission Trips (July 8 – 22) – Eastern Star Church along with Heartland Church, joined on a mission trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Over the course of two weeks, members of each congregation worked side by side to build a foundation for the kitchen at the school in Turpin Village (just outside of Port-au-Prince). The kitchen will enable the women in the village to prepare meals for the children each day during the school year. The groups also painted the latrine, laid the foundation for the orphan children’s home, and assisted in Vacation Bible School for more than 400 children and youth. Arlington Woods Elementary – The congregation has raised more than $72,000 of our $200,000 goal to support more than 500 students at Arlington Woods Elementary IPS School 99; and Raytheon employees donated 20 laptops. Thank you to all those who have supported this campaign thus far! Through the month of August, please continue to give to the technology campaign by using the ‘IPS99’ code via the GIVE tab on our website or app. Let’s make sure that School 99 has the same resources as other schools in the state of Indiana. feedONE - Last year, we committed to feeding children in Haiti for three years in partnership with the Convoy of Hope feedONE program. We’ve reached $132,000 of our total goal of $360,000 feeding more than 1,000 children each day. Visit our website or mobile app to help change the lives of those in need by pledging an electronic, recurring monthly gift of only $10. ESC Scholarship – Due to the generous tithes and offerings of our members, we were able to award 38 scholarships totaling $76,000. Each scholarship recipient received a check for $2,000 that will help with tuition, housing, books, and school supplies as they attend colleges and universities across the nation. Center for Leadership Development (CLD) – ESC has partnered with CLD for many years; and this year, we are a $10,000 sponsor of the CLD College Pre Conference and College Fair on August 26. The conference will provide resources to help more than 1,500 students and parents prepare for and succeed in college. The above touches on a few accomplishments since the beginning of the year because of your faithful support to building God’s Kingdom. As the church continues our mission of evangelism and discipleship, we’ve successfully launched The ROCK (Renewing Our Community for the Kingdom) Initiative. To learn more about The ROCK Initiative, turn to page 2. You can also get updates, view videos and photos on the initiative by visiting escrockintiative.org. Praise God! None of this would be possible without Him! We thank God for all the blessings and continuing to take this ministry from faith to faith and glory to glory. As we welcome in September’s “Back to Church Month,” it is a good time to ask God to give you guidance on where you should connect in ministry. Get involved in Bible Study, Sunday School, Financial Freedom Institute classes, or volunteer in ministry - ask Him to show you how you can become a better disciple to help further the kingdom. Blessings,
Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr. Senior Pastor

The Benefits and Joys of Eastern Star Church Membership Written by Janai Downs Eastern Star Church (ESC) provides an atmosphere for spiritual, social, and physical support for the community and especially for its members. Membership at ESC comes with numerous benefits and great joy! To become a member of ESC, you must accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior and complete New Member’s Orientation class. To maintain membership at Eastern Star Church, you must financially support and participate in ministry. The Benefits of ESC Membership As a member of Eastern Star Church, you are eligible for and/or encouraged to participate in: • Baptism • Baby dedication • Communion • Counseling services • Utility and rent assistance (requirements apply) • Food and clothing pantry • Funeral services • Scholarships (qualifying high school graduates) • Wedding services Additionally, the Exhortation Ministry comes alongside members for prayer, and visitation when they experience sickness, life changes, or death in their family. The Joys of ESC Membership 1. Relationship-Building and Accountability Many lifelong friendships have developed through a connection to the church family such as a child participating in various church activities with other children or the bond formed by adults serving in ministries together. Building relationships with people that share the same beliefs and values is a joy that comes from being a part of Eastern Star Church. We’re able to hold one another accountable by journeying together in our Christian faith!
2. Opportunities to Serve and Make a Difference In Acts 20:35, Paul reminds us of Jesus’ words that, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” He was speaking of the joy that comes when we give our time, talent, and treasures to serve others. Eastern Star Church has more than 40 ministries where members can use their natural talents and spiritual gifts to edify the body of Christ, such as the Care Center. Care is the outreach ministry that helps to meet the needs of the less fortunate as well as those in need of emergency assistance. Besides the partnerships and service opportunities offered in the church and the Indianapolis community, the ministry continues to bless people domestically and internationally. 3. Opportunities for Evangelism and Discipleship According to the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:18-20, God created the church as a vehicle to go forth and make disciples. Church membership is more than having your name on the roll. It is an opportunity to partner with other believers to grow our relationship with Christ and encourage others to do the same through Sunday Worship Service, Bible Study, Sunday School, and other classes and programs offered at Eastern Star Church. We are helping to fulfill God’s desire to reconcile the world to Himself. “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: “Be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20). Your membership and involvement at Eastern Star Church illustrates to others that you represent Jesus Christ and identify with the mission of evangelism and discipleship. We exercise our responsibility to other believers by building relationships and growing together for the purpose of advancing God’s kingdom. We invite you, as you joyfully serve through this ministry, to take advantage of the many benefits as well! For details about membership, visit our website by clicking on the ABOUT US tab, then MEMBERSHIP & MEMBERSHIP SERVICES.
The ROCK Initiative UPDATES! We built our first ROCK home, started construction on two additional homes, and facilitated the paving of North Priscilla Avenue (33 years in the making)! Coming in 2018, we will begin construction on Sunstone at Arlington Woods; a commercial and residential facility nestled in the heart of the Arlington Woods community. We’ve also hired Ashley Gurvitz, Community Development Manager, to foster the ever-growing relationship between the community, surrounding businesses and organizations, and the church. This includes the development of the 46218 Neighborhood Association that has and will continue to host meetings to learn more about the plans for and with the residents of the neighborhood. And last but not least, due to your generous contributions, we’ve been able to invest $180,000 with Habitat for Humanity for the development of two ROCK homes. We are currently inviting volunteers from our congregation, sister churches, and community partners to assist in the build.

Senior Saint’s Ministry: A Lasting Legacy of Fellowship Written by Robbie Flippin, Esq.
The Senior Saints Ministry, founded in 1994 to meet the fellowship and functional needs of the church’s seasoned and mature members, has evolved and expanded through the years. Founding member Jewel Bailey elaborated on the Ministry’s origin stating, “The ministry was started as a response to the lack of activities for seniors. We spoke to the older members of the Church and asked them what their needs and concerns were.” From the identified needs, Sis. Bailey, along with the late: Gladys Thomas, Zeola Adair, Sara Lyons, and James Hodges, formed the Senior Saints Ministry. During the earlier years of the ministry, once a month, Bro. Hodges would drive the church bus of 30 members to run errands such as going to the bank, shopping centers, and going out to eat.
Today’s Senior Saints Ministry has grown from its humble beginnings and has blossomed to 90 members. Although the ministry has changed in many ways, the Saints always remember to keep the Lord first. The Saints spread the Word to the community through activities which include: Oasis Assisted Living on 30th, nursing homes, Wheeler Mission, delivering gift baskets to the members, donating gift cards to the Care Center, and visiting the sick and shut in members. The activities are educational, altruistic, and differ from month to month. Saints and members of the congregation also participate in health education, safety education and self-defense classes, Alzheimer’s awareness workshops, computer classes, and Bible Study. There is room for fun, too! The Saints fellowship through bingo, movies, the annual Christmas Recognition Award Banquet, day trips, shopping extravaganza, and an annual trip to the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration Minority Health Fair. The Saints have traveled to the Creation Museum, The National Underground Railroad and Freedom Center, and in October they will travel to the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky. Sister Mary Barnett, a long-time member of the Senior Saints Ministry, states, “My hope is that the Senior Saints Ministry continues as long as it possibly can, we never leave the Lord out, and we continue to bring love to one another.” The Senior Saints Ministry is always looking to grow. The Saints Ministry meetings are held on the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Main Campus. The Senior Saints Ministry encourages the church seniors age 55 and older to join the ministry to promote the discipleship, fellowship, and service of seniors. For more information about the Senior Saints Ministry, visit our website or call (317) 591-5050 ext. 115.

Women of the Word — It’s Tough Being a Woman Written by Barbara A. Walker
Women of the Word (WOW) – is a ministry that strives to develop spiritually mature women that actively influence their families, church, and community. In the words of ministry leader Nicole Barnes, “This year has been awesome!” The women are diving into a series by Beth Moore called “Esther: It’s Tough Being a Woman.” Esther was a phenomenal young woman, and many of the situations she faced parallel what women experience today. Each month’s lesson has been facilitated by a different woman within the ministry, bringing her gifts and style to the Biblical discussions. The WOW leadership team has received remarkable feedback and insight from their fellow attendees! The series’ theme surrounds the importance of vulnerability, especially with God. Vulnerability does not equate to weakness but is a sign of trust. The need to trust God and each other enough to be transparent and open is reinforced through this study. Another powerful lesson the women are studying is about God’s providence. The book of Esther is one of the only two books in the Bible where we don’t see the printed name of God. However, God’s hand is in it. The book of Esther reminds participants to examine their own lives and identify those times when God may not have been visible, but they could see evidence of His work. This study also reminds them of something Pastor Jeffery A. Johnson, Sr. says consistently, “Trust God’s hand even when you can’t trace it!”
Back to Church Month Written by Arlean Johnson
Did you start the year off focused and energized or made a New Year’s resolution to become more active in the church? September is a month of new beginnings, renewal, and transition. With the church on hiatus during the month of August coupled with the demands of everyday life, we tend to fall off during this time of the year.
Don’t worry! September is “Back to Church Month!” Back to Church Month is a national campaign that encourages church members to invite their family, friends, and the community to church. According to Lifeway Research survey, 82% of individuals polled stated they would attend church if someone they knew invited them. Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT) instructs us to “Think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” As Christians, we have a responsibility to share the good news with others. One way to do this is by bringing a loved one to church. We also want to encourage each member to refocus, evaluate your progress thus far, and make a commitment to get connected in the church. It’s time to buckle down and make God our number one priority. Let’s come alongside one another and take advantage of all the great things the church has to offer. Bible Study, Financial Freedom Institute classes, Sunday School, Children’s Church, Teen Church, Women in the Word, Men of Purpose, etc. will resume in September (visit our website to view the calendar of events for dates). We have something for every age group with special emphasis on “Experiencing God” during Bible Study. It’s important that we stay connected to other believers and commit ourselves to the advancement of God’s kingdom. See you in September!
Why should other women attend Women of the Word? WOW is an amazing, multi-generational group of women. Sis. Barnes says, “As a woman in her 30s, it’s nice to gain wisdom from women in their 50s and 60s while also impacting women in their late teens and 20s.” WOW is a great place to get connected and develop relationships. Women of the Word meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Main Campus. For more information about Women of the Word, visit our website or call (317) 591-5050, ext. 217.
