LOVE IS PATIENT, LOVE IS KIND. IT DOES NOT ENVY, IT DOES NOT BOAST, IT IS NOT PROUD. IT DOES NOT DISHONOR OTHERS, IT IS NOT SELF-SEEKING, IT IS NOT EASILY ANGERED, IT KEEPS NO RECORD OF WRONGS. LOVE DOES NOT DELIGHT IN EVIL BUT REJOICES WITH THE TRUTH. IT ALWAYS PROTECTS, ALWAYS TRUSTS, ALWAYS HOPES, ALWAYS PERSEVERES.

A WEDDING CHAPEL AND SACRED SPACE FOR PRAYER, REFLECTION, AND COMMITMENT ON ETBU’S SERENE HILLTOP CAMPUS
Inspiration INSPIRATION
United in marriage for over 40 years, Gene and Patsy Ponder have set a model of love for each other, their family, their businesses, and their community. The Ponders began their legacy in the cabinet industry by founding Republic Industries in 1974 with ten employees. Growing to over 2,200 employees with plants in Texas, Alabama, Florida, and Canada, the Ponders sold the highly successful business in 2004. Expanding their impact in the Marshall community, they started Master WoodCraft Cabinetry in 2007. Through their leadership in the cabinetry business, the Ponders fostered a reputable employee-centered work environment, set a standard of excellence for the industry, and shared their family’s success with the community. Despite the exponential growth of Master WoodCraft, the Ponder family decided to sell the business in 2018 when the profound loss of their son, Kenny Ponder, who was instrumental in running the cabinetry company, devastated their lives. Kenneth Eugene Ponder (October 31, 1965 – June 17, 2017) was an avid outdoorsman, rancher, and expert hunter, who graduated from Marshall High School in 1984. After high school, he began as a management trainee for Republic Industries. For the company’s benefit and with the company’s support, Kenny earned an Associate Degree in Wood Technology from North Carolina State University. With his successful leadership and determination, he was later promoted to Vice President of Manufacturing at Republic Industries. Kenny joined his father at Master WoodCraft, where he served as Executive Vice President until God called him home with Jesus. As friends and donors to East Texas Baptist University, Gene and Patsy as well as their children and grandchildren decided to express their love in honoring the memory of their beloved son, brother, and father by supporting the vision to create KENNY PONDER PARK, a peaceful and beautiful outdoor area with gardens, walking paths, benches, and arbor adjacent to ETBU’s campus pond. Expanding on this vision, the Ponder family generously contributed additional funds to construct the CHAPEL ON THE HILL, a sacred dwelling place for worship, prayer, weddings, performing arts, and memorial services for families and friends of ETBU. As the Ponder family’s legacies and contributions live on through the CHAPEL ON THE HILL and the surrounding KENNY PONDER PARK, we invite you, dear friends, to unite with us in this journey of creating a consecrated space for prayer, reflection, and commitment on ETBU’s serene Hilltop campus.
SITE PLANS The CHAPEL ON THE HILL will provide a dedicated house of worship to focus on the power of prayer, the sanctity of biblical marriage, and the memorial celebration of loved ones. In addition to the main Chapel Hall boasting space for over 200 guests, the CHAPEL ON THE HILL features a grand foyer, bridal suite, groom’s study, and more. Overlooking the gardens, pathways, and pond of the adjacent KENNY PONDER PARK, views from the Chapel Hall will provide a sense of peace and serenity for guests on any occasion.

CHAPEL ON THE HILL
EXTERIOR ELEVATION With clean lines, the exterior facade of the Chapel reflects the Classical architectural style of ETBU’s campus. The Chapel will stand on the Hill and reflect the Christian foundation of East Texas Baptist University as countless supporters, students, alumni, faculty, and staff along with their families gather under the steeple of the CHAPEL ON THE HILL for years to come.
NAMING OPPORTUNITIES Please prayerfully consider partnering with us in building a symbol to represent God’s vision for faith, fellowship, and unity. We invite you to join ETBU and the Ponder Family in investing in the lives of the East Texas Baptist University community through the naming support opportunities for the CHAPEL ON THE HILL and KENNY PONDER PARK.
