when you see WOUNDED, we see MENDED

LETTER FROM THE DEAN

“for i will RESTORE health to you, and your wounds will HEAL, declares the LORD.” jeremiah 30:17

Nursing is a profession that is rich in tradition, infused with compassion, and grounded on the pursuit of evidence and innovation. One of the most famous nurses in history, Florence Nightingale, began at a young age ministering to the ill and poor people in a village near her home. Nightingale eventually came to the conclusion that nursing was her God-given calling. She believed nursing as a vocation was her divine purpose. Nightingale continuously sought to improve patient outcomes by seeking answers and creating solutions to health care needs. As a Christ-centered nurse training program, our practice at East Texas Baptist University encompasses a health care philosophy and calling like Florence Nightingale. Our teaching not only challenges new nurses to grow in knowledge, experience, and competencies in order to provide evidence-based quality care to their patients, but also equips ETBU nurses to integrate their Christian faith in their nursing practice. Providing our students with the latest innovative technologies, modern simulation equipment, and enhanced clinical facilities will better prepare ETBU nurses with the skills, experience, and confidence to effectively address patient health care needs. The relocation to our new downtown campus in the historic Marshall Grand will enable our program to grow and help meet the profession’s acute nursing shortage. I am asking ETBU friends and alumni to partner with us as we move to the Marshall Grand. Tradition, evidence, innovation, and compassion are interwoven within our ETBU scholarly community. The School of Nursing reflects this commitment in our connection to the University’s mission of developing Christian servant leaders to serve in the nursing profession. We consistently pursue the highest quality learning outcomes for our students to educate future nurses who will leave East Texas Baptist and move into our communities, our nation, and our world to minister to the needs of the patients they serve in the name of Jesus. Serving Him,

Dr. Rebekah Grigsby, DNP, MSN, RN, CWCN | dean, etbu school of nursing

“Moving into the Marshall Grand would be a wonderful opportunity for growth of the ETBU School of Nursing. Having a larger facility with the latest technology and more resources will better prepare the increasing number of students enrolled in the ETBU nursing program. I am proud to be an ETBU nurse and will always advocate on behalf of our program. Contributing to this move not only invests in the ETBU nursing program, but also in the future face of health care.”

EQUIPPING “SERVANT-HEARTED” NURSES East Texas Baptist University has been equipping Bachelor of Science Nurses with a high level of efficiency resulting in cohorts which consistently perform with 100% pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination. These efforts have been accomplished without the assistance of the most modern simulation learning equipment and limited instructional facilities. The installation of the School of Nursing in the Marshall Grand will not only afford students and faculty with enhanced and expanded space, but with an essential simulation learning center. Simulation provides a safe environment for skill set practice prior to patient encounters, standardized learning experiences for students, and development in

areas of focused training. A landmark study indicates that up to 50% of clinical time in simulation can lead to quality outcomes with progression through the nursing school, NCLEX success, and clinical practice upon graduation. These simulation experiences are specifically designed for hands-on and nurse-patient skills training. As students enter the simulation activity and clinical setting, they leave the capacity of student behind and take on the calling of the skilled professional nurse. The ETBU School of Nursing learning experience leads to the ultimate goal of equipping servant-hearted nurses to enter a complex health care environment prepared to serve with compassion, knowledge, and excellence.

THE HISTORY Constructed in 1929, the Hotel Marshall was built by Sam Perkins and designed by the renowned Fort Worth architect, Wyatt C. Hedrick. From its beginnings, the Hotel Marshall was a hub of vibrant activity for the community. In 1957, Earl Hollandsworth bought the building and spearheaded a remodel. The Hotel Marshall continued to be a popular East Texas attraction until it closed in 1971, due in part, to the rise in popularity of motels.

DR. J. BLAIR BLACKBURN etbu president “ETBU was created in 1912 as the College of Marshall by the people of Marshall. Expanding ETBU to a downtown campus in the Marshall Grand reflects the University’s commitment to invest in the economic development of our city. This expansion is a return on the investment that Marshall made in our institution.”

The building stood in a profoundly blighted condition for more than 25 years. In 2003, to help fuel and assist the economic revitalization and historic preservation of downtown Marshall, Marshall native and businessman Jerry Cargill and his wife, Judy Cargill, partnered with former Texas State Senator and former Harrison County Judge Richard Anderson and his wife, Christina Cocek Anderson, on the renovation of the building. With the assistance of community partners including the City of Marshall, the non-profit Marshall Downtown Development Corporation, the Marshall Economic Development Corporation, and hundreds of donors, the partners worked to renovate and restore the beloved historic landmark. The renovation was completed in 2007 and the Cargills and Andersons used the building for events and meetings for members of the local community. In 2013, the Cargills and Andersons donated the building as a gift to East Texas Baptist University for the advancement of Christ-centered education and the benefit of the local community and East Texas region.
