Spanish malt whiskeys have had a tradition in recent decades, but are nevertheless not widely represented. The malts are specially blended to the taste of the Spanish consumer and therefore not always equally suitable for everyone. Despite this, the use of barrels from Oloroso, Ximenez, Tempranillo and Rioja results in a special quality. At the same time, Spanish whiskeys are still developing. Let us present you 11 Spanish whiskies.

1. Destilerías Liber The Liber distillery was founded in 2001 for the distillation of liqueurs and their malt whiskey Embrujo de Granada. The whiskey is made from the natural meltwater of the Sierra Nevada and the whiskey is aged for 8 years in American Oak. 2. Santamanía Destilería Urbana The Santamanía Destilería Urbana started distilling gin, vodka, liqueur and whiskey in 2014 and is the first craft distillery in Spain. The characteristics of the whiskeys are mainly based on the use of 100% Castilian peated malt and small wine barrels for maturation. 3. Destilerías Y Crianza Founded in 1958, Destilerías y Crianza del Whiskey S.A. Spain’s first whiskey in Segovia. The DYC whiskey has gained the attraction of the whole population over the years due to the more than reasonable price in the shops. Currently the distillery is a subsidiary of Suntory and produces more than 2 million litres of whiskey per year, previously in the 1980s this was even 20 million litres per year, making the distillery one of the largest in the world. 1

4. Acha The oldest distillery in Spain is located in Amurrio where the 5 generations of family have been making distillates since 1831. Their whiskeys are faithful to the way whiskey is best known in Spain, namely mixing existing whiskeys from Scotland, America and Canada into their own blend with water from the Nervión. They make their own Haran whiskey completely themselves, aged for 8 years in American and French oak. 5. Basque Moonshiners The family distillery in Bilbao began its history with potato distillates since the Spanish Civil War, making it the first Basque moonshiner. The micro distillery has been making crafted distillates exclusively for more than 70 years with the recipes of the past. The Agot Single Malt is made from Navarre barley and matures for 3 years in ex-bourbon and Rioja barrels. 6. Destillerias MG The family distillery that has been making gin and vodka since 1835 follows the traditional way of making whiskey. Since 1965 they have been mak4

ing their Mag 5 blended whiskey from imported whiskeys elsewhere. Despite their history in the craftsmanship of distillation, the whiskey is available very cheaply on the Spanish market. 7. Conde Lumar Conde Lumar is an artistic distillery founded in 2014. Here they make wellknown distillates such as rum, cognac, vodka and whiskey with 23 carat gold leaf flakes. The Lumar 1818 Gold is made from malted rye and aged for 5 years in oak. 8. Gonzalez Byass The Gonzalez family started out in 1835 as a wine and sherry exporter. From 1844 the start was made with distilling brandy, but it was only between 1927 and 1951 that their distilling craftsmanship really took off and started to diversify. Their Nomad Outland whiskey is a blend of 30 Speyside and Highland whiskeys ranging from 5 to 8 years old, aged as a blend for 3 years in sherry casks in Scotland. The process then continues in Jerez Spain where the blend matures for another 12 months in Ximenez barrels.

9. Hiram Walker and Sons Hiram Walker started out as a wholesaler in 1856 and has grown into one of the largest distilleries in the world. With exports to 150 countries, it owns 11 distilleries in Scotland and other locations in Spain, Argentina, Mexico and France. Their Doble V whiskey is a blended malt that has been made in Spain since 1971 but is exported as American whiskey for the entire Spanish market, mainly to Argentina. 10. Xecna – Jaume The Jaume I whiskey is a luxurious blend with a Catalan label, which makes it the first Catalan whiskey. The whiskey is a Scottish blend made in Scotland and is matured in oak in Catalonia. 11. Drumguish Distillery – Old Level Although Drumguish distillery is a Scottish distillery from the Speyside, it has designed a blended whiskey for the Spanish market, namely the Old Level. From Hawaii with love Hawaiian food and restaurants are swinging and so are their Poke bowls, the latest food trend all over the world. Since some years the trend shows no sign of slowing. In fact the trend is picking up speed. The Hawaiian raw fish dish combining chunks of fresh seafood with umamirich toppings, poke bowl has overtaken sushi and ceviche. Poke bowl origins “Poké,” means “to cut crosswise into pieces” in Hawaiian, which is how the fish is prepared in a poké bowl. This form of poké became popular in Hawaii around the 1970s. A traditional poke dish combines skinned, deboned, and filleted raw fish served with Hawaiian salt, seaweed, and roasted, ground candlenut meat. This form of poké is still common in the Hawaiian Islands. While poke bowl is a traditional

Hawaiian dish, it has taken a long time to reach the mainland and other continents. Toppings This authentic option is still available today, however part of poke’s appeal is the way it can be customized to different tastes. Biography Rolf Jan van der Wal was born in 1954 in Hilversum, The Netherlands. He graduated from the Art college in Utrecht. He attended esthetic and graphic design education. After college he started teaching two and three dimensional art and art history and did so for 38 years. As a Dutch artist Rolf is very well known for his amazing two-dimensional artwork which is carefully drawn and painted by hand, with oil- or acrylic paint, soft pastels, color pencils or Indian ink on paper or canvas. Rolf has gained his fame through exhibitions, work in commission, in various countries. He created his own sensational style of original, authentic, fine art. He currently is retired from teaching and moved to Spain, where he still paints.

Mundomar One of the theme parks in the Costa Blanca is Mundomar. This is a marine animal park in the Rincón de Loix in Benidorm. It is designed to bring children and young adults in contact with wildlife they will not come across easily in daily life. The

Home to a variety of spectacular slides and pools there are also large lawns to relax and sunbathe. The centre of this theme park in Costa Blanca has an area with food stalls and a restaurant to regain strength after all the excitement. The 15 large aquatic

attractions use seawater pumped in from the sea. Visit the highest slide in Europe and the highest capsule slide in the world. There is a large area for the youngest family members. Padel came to Spain in the ’80s. The first court was opened in the Marbella club, with Manolo Santana as one of its main promoters. From then on, it quickly gained followers, fans and players. In fact, according to data from the Consejo Superior de Deportes, there are over four million players in Spain.

Padel tennis is a combination of tennis and squash that is played by 2 players (singles) or by 4 players (doubles). You play using a small thick racket (a paddle) and a type of tennis ball. The court is much smaller than a tennis court. There is no overhand serve either and point counting is easier. The court is fully enclosed with a glass rear and sidewall. Padel tennis is played with a paddle racket that can be attached to your wrist. Usually, the racket is made of graphite, carbon or fibreglass. The rackets can vary in shape, weight and base material. Padel tennis is played using a ball similar to a tennis ball. It is slightly smaller and it must be able to bounce properly. Padel tennis originated in Acapulco, a Mexican beach resort, at the end of the 60s. It was Enrique Corcuera who came up with the ball sport. He was a businessman who didn’t have sufficient room at home to build a tennis court. He, therefore, come up with a similar sport and decided to build a court measuring 10 by 20 meters with 3 to 4 meter high walls. At first it was the Mexican elite who played this new sport. Until a friend of Enrique, Alfonso De Hohenlohe, came to visit him. He introduced

the sport to Marbella and the game became extremely popular in Spain with the assistance of King Juan Carlos and Monolo Santana (exWimbledon winner). Padel court constructors realized that they were saving money and space by installing a padel court instead of a tennis court. So there was a dramatic increase in courts and players. In addition to this growth on the social networks and YouTube, Gol Television, the Spanish public channel, has bought the rights to broadcast the padel semi-finals and final of each tournament. To a large extent, the rules of padel are the same as in tennis, except that in padel, you serve by bouncing the ball on the ground and below hip height. In addition, special rules apply with regards to the walls. A padel match is most often the best of three or five sets, with a set being the first side to win six games. In padel, you score points when • the ball bounces on the ground twice on the opponent’s side • the opponent hits the ball into the net • the opponent hits the ball outside the play area (outside of the cage or against one of your walls) • the opponent hits the ball into their own grid

• an opponent is hit by the ball Padel has the reputation of being way more fun to play than tennis, especially for beginners who can, right from the start play longer rallies.

Michael Jackson painting starts crying The Michael Jackson portrait (100x200cm), painted by artist Peter Engels was water damaged in a French art gallery during a nightly storm. As a result, it looks as if Michael cries. As if teardrops roll down his face. This looks like a supernatural phenomenon. Artist Peter Engels is not superstitious. He thinks that the tears give the painting an extra dimension. The artist tries to ﬁnd a plausible explanation for the tears: “I painted this portrait on the island of Lombok. To give the oil paint more texture, I mixed beach sand in it. Normally this paint can tolerate a splash of water. But apparently not when it is mixed with this sand. The Costa Blanca is one of the best places for snorkelling and scuba diving in Spain. Off the coast of Alicante Province there are some great dive sites and the sea is perfect for snorkelling in summer. Here are the best diving spots.

The Costa Blanca has more than many diving schools and snorkelling clubs. The Mediterranean offers clear turquoise seawater with perfect visibility onto marine life, the rocky seabed, underwater caves and offshore reefs. Divers love the diversity of this coastline, particularly the island sites off Alicante’s Costa Blanca. The favourable climate, water

temperatures up to 26°C summer, and sheltered conditions with very few sea currents or strong winds is perfect for year-round diving and snorkelling. Look out for the 5-star PADI Dive centres located in the main resorts along the Costa Blanca and take a beginners or open water course. Snorkelling is good fun too and a relaxed alternative for everyone, kids included. EAT, DRINK &MORE

Tabarca Island Tabarca Marine Reserve is the best site for scuba diving in Costa Blanca, with clear visibility to depths of 30m or more. The coastal shelf surrounding the Tabarca Island is a protected ecosystem where meadows of seagrass provide the ideal environment for an amazing biodiversity of species. Expect to see turtles, moray eels, seahorses, sepia and schools of fish that breed here. Scuba diving is only allowed with prior authorization although anyone can snorkel around the shores. Get here by public boat from Santa Pola, Alicante City or Benidorm, on a private boat or diving trip. Permission is needed. Calpe ‘Los Arcos’ is a good dive site off the Peñon de Ifach ‘Calpe Rock’. Take your camera and film the stunning scene of sea creatures swimming through archways studded with anemone. The huge rock formations are on the seafloor at a depth of 10 meters. Benidorm La Llosa is a great dive site 300m south of Benidorm’s ‘Peacock Island’, a protected marine reserve with excellent visibility. The top of this underwater ‘mountain’ is about 9 meters below the surface, with a vertical wall dropping off to a 142

depth of 30 meters and a gradually sloping western face. The various dive routes take you past impressive rock formations and to the ‘Virgin’s Cave’, a sacred grotto with an image of the local Patron Saint. Observe a diversity of sealife such as devilfish, stingrays, rock salmon, barracudas, sea bream, octopus, wild lobster and the exotic sunfish. And if you’re lucky you’ll see dolphins too. Get there by private boat or on a diving trip. Dénia El Frescito is Dénia’s main dive site. The cove at the far end of Les Rotes beach is part of Cape San Antonio Marine Reserve and rather challenging to get to. The rocky seabed, areas of white sand, and meadows of seagrass are vibrant with sea life. There’s even an archway to swim through making a scenic backdrop for underwater photography. Benitatxell – Moraig Cove Moraig Caves are a magical dive where refracting light illuminates the cavern when the sea meets an underground freshwater river, causing an unearthly ‘halo’ effects known as halocline. Only professional divers are allowed beyond this point. El Campello El Caballón reef is a good dive site just off El Campello on the Costa Blanca just north of Alicante City.

The rock bar runs parallel to the coast from Cabo de La Huertas headland to Campello. Classed as medium difficulty with diving to depths of a maximum 25 metres, you’ll need to come in a private boat or on an organised trip. There is also an artificial reef which stretches from Pueblo Acantilado to Lloma de Reixes which is considered to be an easier scuba diving route (max. depth 25m). El Campello coastline has a fascinating underwater landscape which is brilliant for snorkelling, for example, swimming offshore to discover LLop Mari Caves (maximum depth of 5 metres) or the rocky areas in front of Venta Lanuza (1 to 3m

depth). However, Illeta dels Banyets archaeological site is the most popular and intriguing place for some undersea investigation. Walk or paddle out to the rocky platform which is near the leisure harbour. Costa Blanca diving fun Divers of all abilities can enjoy shore dives down the Costa Blanca from Dénia to Jávea, Moraira to Calpe, Altea to Benidorm, Villajoyosa to El Campello, Santa Pola and Tabarca Island. Contact Costa Blanca dive clubs and academies for specific information and advice. Diving insurance is obligatory for scuba dives in Spain.
