According to UPS market experts, the worldwide market has experienced a transition from traditional, transformer-based topology to transformer-free technology, which is now the dominant design for three-phase online UPSs. For Eaton, the shift is even more significant: we introduced our first transformer-free three-phase UPS over ten years ago and have remained at the front line of this trend ever since. Compared to traditional topology designs, our transformer-free UPS is only half the weight and occupies just 60 percent of the footprint, resulting in lower freight and material costs and, in the long run, sustainability. Sustainability is also a result of Eaton’s development of innovative energy saving technologies, which are employed in products such as our newest three-phase UPS – the Eaton 9395 1100 kVA, the largest transformer-free UPS on the double conversion market. More on page 11. It is a recognised fact that the importance of data centres is increasing globally. Though their market has been affected by the global financial crisis, it is forecasted to recover and do well in the future thanks to continued large-scale computing requirements. In fact, emerging trends in computing favour the growth of so-called collocation centres, and organisations of different types have realised the advantages of collocating their mission-critical equipment within a professionally run data centre. A data centre with multiple users cannot risk a power disturbance of any kind; these centres have to provide the highest reliability at all times. This is where the expert knowledge of Eaton’s Large Systems Group really shines – read more on pages 6–8. And we’re not forgetting the needs of server rooms and smaller-sized data centres either: our newly launched pre-packaged data centre solutions are designed to provide data centres of various sizes with all the equipment necessary for power protection in one easy-to-order package. ith a history of more than 140 years and roots firmly in Belgian soil, Delhaize has earned consumers’ trust as a reliable food retailer on three continents. Despite the company’s long traditions, it has not stayed unaffected by the increased competition and growing efficiency pressures in the food market. The trend has led to more and more automated functions in storage and distribution. In Belgium, Delhaize has protected its supermarkets against power failures for many years. Single-phase UPSs, previously supplied by MGE Office Protection Systems, protect their cash terminals in 136 supermarkets around the country. When Delhaize de-

cided to build their first semi-automatic distribution centre in Belgium, they knew who to turn to: Eaton. “We had excellent experiences with MGE Office Protection Systems and the level of service they provided. When they merged with Eaton, it was a natural decision for us to discuss our larger-scale power protection needs with Eaton Power Quality,” recalls Didier Jacobs, Maintenance Engineer at Delhaize Belgium. Distribution centre as a cornerstone Distribution centres are a crucial part of the order-delivery process. The more automatic the centre’s functions become, the more challenges they set for reliable power. “Our new distribution centre is highly automated: we have automatic cranes that collect and group the groceries and load them onto trucks. The trucks then distribute goods to our stores in Belgium and Luxembourg, six or seven days a week,” says Jacobs. Every power drop, sag or surge affects the centre’s delicate automated equipment, which again causes considerable costs due to delays in delivery. “The crane height has to be precise for automatic cranes to work correctly. Power failure damages their operation as it can drop the crane’s specified height by a few millimetres. Even this small difference has enor-

mous consequences for the crane’s next pickup: the crane cannot collect goods, as it does not reach the correct height. This has a great impact on the overall setup,” Jacobs explains. “After power interruption it takes 24 hours to reset all the cranes – over thirty in total – to function properly.”

Eaton 9395 proves its value Delhaize chose the Eaton 9395 UPS with a power range of 825 kVA. “We have one direct high voltage line designated solely for our distribution centre. The 825 kVA 9395 was the perfect choice for us: it is powerful enough to protect all our cranes from power anomalies, however short-term they are. We were very impressed by the 9395’s double-conversion design and Hot Sync® paralleling technology – features that guarantee the most reliable power for our needs. Now we no longer need to worry about losing an entire business day due to unstable power.” The 9395 has been in full operation at the centre since early September 2009. The project took six months from start to finish. “We chose Eaton due to their proven project management skills, ability to react quickly, very good price/quality ratio and excellent track record. The relationship runs very smoothly – just as it did with MGE Office Protection Systems,” emphasises Jacobs.  5

Eaton has not only elevated their product technologies to a fine art; they have excelled in providing energy and cost savings in their production and system testing as well. Let’s take a look at what’s going on in the Large Systems Group and its markets around the world.

aton’s Large Systems Group, founded at the beginning of 2008 to support massive data centre projects in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), has definitely hit the spot: in spite of the economic downturn, there is no end in sight for data centre growth. The concept of an individual group providing large-scale customers with tailored solutions has been tested in the US for several years and proved to be worth every penny. The feedback received so far in EMEA is equally positive. “What a customer needs is a partner with whom they can discuss every need in detail. The larger the need, the more impor-

tant it is to have a reliable partner who is able to manage the project as a whole – not only product supplying but project planning, scheduling, pricing, testing, documenting and after sales. This is where the Large Systems Group’s strength lies: in the ability to deliver a complete power quality solution from one provider,” says Juha Lantta, Manager of the Large Systems Group in EMEA. “Even though the current downturn has slowed down customers’ projects, we are continuing to invest in LSG’s operations in EMEA. We are slowly but surely gaining the target market share we have set and are now supplying tens of systems per year,” says Lantta.

locating their critical data at an external service provider’s site. “To give some perspective of the project scale, we have data centre clients whose power requirements are over 40 megawatts. Their data centres have several football-field sized areas of floor space,” Lantta outlines. Data centres, however, are not LSG’s only customer group: large-scale systems are also delivered to industrial companies as well as to hospitals, whose power requirements are currently rising. “An example worth mentioning is the socalled marine UPS, which showcases the truly tailor-made solutions we can provide. These UPSs, used on cruise vessels – which today are like floating cities – have to remain fully functional to protect navigation equipment, emergency power and lighting, ship automation, communication and other critical systems, regardless of vibration and temperature variation. For example, they have hardened mechanical design and shock absorbers, among other unique features.” EMEA’s Large Systems Group in Finland has also delivered systems to Asia and the Pacific region (APAC).

“It is a fact that growing markets, such as China and India, are facing a rapidly growing need for more reliable power. That is why the LSG groups in EMEA and in the US, which already work in close cooperation and back each other up, also support APAC markets,” Lantta says. Saving energy with an electronic load LSG has recently been enhancing their system testing technique to meet the requirements of larger-scale systems that need huge amounts of energy in the testing phase. “Most of the large UPS systems are witness-tested by the customer at the factory. This is to ensure that the UPS system performance meets the set criteria and there will be no surprises when the system is installed on site. In practical terms, there is no deal without in-depth testing and detailed documentation of the performance,” Lantta says. Wasting lots of energy is, however, not the direction to go in today’s world. That is why LSG has been working on a new innovation: testing with an electronic load that consumes only the minimum amount of elec-

tricity. Traditionally, the dummy load used for testing transforms the consumed energy into heat, which is generally wasted. With the new green testing technique it is possible to recycle the energy through the system itself and return it to the factory power supply. The amount of wasted energy is substantially reduced, as the only energy lost is the amount needed for the test units to work – 10 percent of the total energy need, at most. “We can now test really large systems in this way – systems of several megawatts. We are the first to offer an electronic load of this size,” Lantta says proudly, but with good reason. “One can easily imagine how much energy is saved overall compared to the traditional testing method, especially with massive loads. Saving energy leads to cost savings for the customer. Sustainability is not only taken into account in product technologies, it is also an inherent part of our production. The green test load shows our commitment to saving energy and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.”

Emergence of collocation centres around the globe A typical LSG customer is a company that already has, or is about to build, a megasized data centre with massive power supply needs. Such customers include various financial institutions, large manufacturing companies, software and hardware houses and internet service providers. A special customer group is hosting companies, whose core business is to offer data storage for third party companies. The size and number of these hosting companies’ data centres – known as collocation centres – is steadily growing as more and more companies are 7

“Of course, if a customer specifically requests it, we will also use traditional load resistors in the testing,” he adds. Adjusting to the customer’s exact needs The new testing technique is based on the Eaton 9395’s state-of-the-art technology that enables the use of an electronic load. “The UPS system that is tested drives the electronic load, inside of which the electricity passes through the rectifier and the inverter and is then fed back to the UPS system’s input. In other words, the technique uses the rectifier and inverter as load banks and draws only very little power from the mains. During the testing, the loss of energy is only 10 percent: 5 percent due to the UPS un-

der test, 5 percent due to the electronic load,” explains Janne Paananen, Senior Application Engineer at LSG in EMEA. ”In fact, the test load employs the 9395’s technical capabilities. The same energy recycling technique is also used in the Easy Capacity Test that can be performed at the customer’s site to test the correct performance and functioning of the UPS and the batteries,” he continues. What is more, the green test load technique enables continuous adjusting and varying of the load characteristics – including load current, power factor, imbalance and linearity – to fit the customer’s exact power requirements. The technique allows both 50 Hz and 60 Hz systems to be tested. “When a customer comes to attend a factory witness test at our facilities, we are able to verify all the system characteristics under different circumstances in concrete and traceable terms. This also adds transparency in decision-making: customers can attend a test event prior to making a purchase decision,” Lantta says. The new green test load area at LSG EMEA’s facilities has been in use since the beginning of 2009. Tens of systems have already been tested and have satisfied a variety of stringent customer requirements. “Who wouldn’t want to save energy and costs at the same time?” asks Lantta, smiling. 

Eaton equipped Citi’s UPSs with Hot Sync paralleling technology, which enables multiple UPS units to be paralleled for redundancy or increased capacity, or both. With Hot Sync, the UPS units can share the load and operate independently of each other with no communication wiring between them, which eliminates a single point of failure. The 9390 also uses sophisticated technology to maximise battery state and life, that is, Eaton’s ABM® technology, which employs a threestage charging system to optimise battery life and prevent battery corrosion. The 9390 has been in operation since August 2009. “The 9390 is exactly what we needed: the highest reliability with the possibility to adapt the system for changing capacity needs,” Juric Ozren concludes. 

Citi relies on Eaton to protect its pan-European service centre Global financial services company Citi chose Eaton 9390 UPSs to protect its Barcelona Sales and Services Centre from potentially damaging power losses. ith over 200 million customers in more than 100 different countries, Citi is one of the most well-known financial services companies in the world. The company has had a presence in Spain for over 90 years, and today it serves its customers through a network of more than 100 branches that includes the Citibank and CitiFinancial businesses, among others. Citi’s functions in Spain have a major role in ensuring smooth customer service throughout Europe. Located in Barcelona, Citi’s pan-European Sales and Services Centre, with over 1,000 employees, provides operational support and sales services to Citi’s consumer businesses in 20 European countries and in 16 different languages. With such an 10

important role to fulfil, the centre cannot risk losing power at its facilities – they have to be in full working order 24/7. To ensure continuous and reliable power for the centre, Citi has been using the Powerware series UPSs since its inception in 1999. “In ten years our consumer business scope in Europe has evolved and the Barcelona Sales and Services Centre expanded. We were in need of new, larger-scale UPSs that could provide the centre with even more reliable power. Our previous UPS did not provide redundancy, which was a risk to our expanding business,” recalls Juric Ozren, Asset Manager at Citi.

at the centre is at a lower level. “The main goal of the project was to install two 80 kVA UPSs with 20 minutes of battery runtime, which fits our requirements perfectly. Eaton not only delivered and installed two Eaton 9390 UPSs with a power range of 80 kVA, but also eliminated the UPS we already had,” Ozren explains. “The installation had to be carried out at night with controlled electrical shutdown so that the centre’s operation was not interrupted. To do this, we had to rely on the old UPS’s backup time. As it was not enough, we needed two nights for the installation.” 9390’s redundancy the key factor

Installation in two nights What Citi needed was a reliable solution that would provide enough backup time for the Sales and Services Centre’s needs. Another challenge was the UPS installation conditions: during the installation, uninterruptible power had to be guaranteed for the centre’s critical loads that could never be shut down. This was only possible at night, when activity

Extended power rating for Eaton 9395 Eaton launched an industry-leading power rating of 1100 kVA for the Eaton 9395 UPS in July.

The 9395 1100 kVA is the first transformer-free UPS of this size in the double conversion UPS market. It is able to meet power needs as high as 4.4 MVA with a four-unit setup.

he 9395 1100 kVA UPS, part of the Powerware series, extends the power rating from the 825 kVA system launched in January this year. The 1100 kVA power range is targeted at the largest data centres and other applications with heavy power needs. “The 1100 kVA is the first transformerfree UPS of this scale in the double conversion UPS market: it is the largest system currently available. Thanks to the 9395’s Hot Sync paralleling design, we are now able to meet power needs as high as 4.4 MVA with a four-unit setup, with each UPS providing 1100 kVA,” says Jari Nieminen, Product Manager at Eaton Power Quality. The modular design also allows the unit to be used in either capacity or redundant mode. “What is unique in the multi-module UPS unit is that it is automatically redundant. For example, if the load is 825 kVA, the 1100 kVA system has automatic N+1 redundancy. If the load rises, the additional 275 kVA module provides increased capacity,” Nieminen adds. The 9395 uses a transformer-free technology that allows very high operating efficiencies – as high as 94.5 percent – and a very small footprint and weight compared to its competitors. This translates into reduced utility costs and space savings that become more and more remarkable when moving into higher power needs. Greatest efficiency with no risks In addition to Hot Sync paralleling and ABM battery management technologies, the

9395 employs other new and innovative Eaton technologies, including the Energy Saver System and the Variable Module Management System (previously known as the Adaptive Capacity System). “The Variable Module Management System, or VMMS, offers the customer outstanding benefits. It significantly increases the system’s overall double conversion efficiency at lighter loads, as it allows the UPS to match the current load by deciding which of the power modules are on standby and which of them feed the load,” Nieminen points out. “The system efficiency is one of the most important UPS features affecting the system’s overall energy consumption. With VMMS, we are able to optimise the efficiency of even the largest systems,” Nieminen says. To guarantee the most reliable system operation, the 1100 kVA system can be configured to have a separate battery for each 275 kVA power module. This setup eliminates the possibility of a single point of failure due to any battery malfunction. 

Pascal Morel Customer focus is the key of every successful business, from manufacturing right through to after sales service. Pascal Morel, who is responsible for both the Operations and Services departments of Eaton’s Power Quality Division in EMEA, emphasises the importance of being close to the customer. Please tell us about your background. I joined Eaton with the MGE Office Protection Systems acquisition in 2007. In total, I have been with the company for 13 years, holding different leadership positions in supply chain, industrial engineering and operations, both in Europe and in Asia. Before I took my current role, I worked as a plant manager in Shenzhen, China, for more than five years. You started as Director, Operations at the end of 2008. What are your responsibilities? I am in charge of all operations activities for Eaton’s Power Quality Division in EMEA, including manufacturing, supply chain, logistics and quality. This covers all Power Quality factories in the region – Helsinki (Finland) for UPS products, Bognor Regis (UK) for telecom DC power solutions and Casablanca (Morocco) for telecom distribution modules and magnetic circuit breakers – as well as their back-office sites and our two main distribution centres in the EMEA region. At present, our main goal is to harmonise our operation processes in EMEA by sharing best practices among our existing operations teams and the new teams who joined us as a result of the MGE Office Protection Systems and Phoenixtec acquisi-

Since July this year you have also been acting as Director, Services. What are your main duties in this role? I am responsible for managing our services in EMEA, focusing primarily on optimising and strengthening the service offering in the region. In this role, I also leverage my previous experience in operations so that we can optimise our service logistics in areas such as replacement processes, spare parts management and so on. What is a typical service customer like? We have many different types of customers, all with different power requirements. In EMEA, we offer customers a wide range of services, ranging from a simple battery replacement for a small UPS to a 24/7 onsite repair service for a large data centre’s UPS systems. We have a team of approximately 140 highly trained field technicians who are able to react quickly and efficiently. We also rely on some service partners in countries where we do not have a direct sales presence. How are you ensuring that Eaton offers the best level of service? We are very determined to provide the customer with a complete solution: in addition to reliable products, they receive comprehensive and easily available services. Installation and maintenance play a key role in securing the highest level of reliability for the customers and keep their core businesses running. When developing a product, we put a strong emphasis on “serviceability” as early as possible in the project. Our goal is to develop products that can be easily and very efficiently installed, maintained and serviced.
