//Architecture DESIGN

The project represents a completely new development along the coast of the Safaga which is considered a serious attempt to shape the future of “identity” to the city. This compound is envisaged as a locale where residents and visitors will experience an exceptionally ‘Good’ quality of life where the design aims to revive the traditions, not in an out-fashioned manner, but adapted and integrated to the needs of today’s technical and practical world. It aims to establish balance between new spatial concepts and existing context in almost all aspects of urban design. The compound intends to provide the residents a living environment that is advanced, satisfying and safe. Cohesive, yet varied and interesting, it is hopefully to be recognized by its leading edge architecture and design process in the area in order to achieve a contemporary expression of the structural principles that govern traditional desert architecture.

The client for Namma shipping compound provided an open brief to build a prototype development of residences for the company’s employees in Safaga. The architect’s response to this site of natural beauty was to create an inspiring and exemplary model of responsible compound, modeled in small scale residences of low density, and integrated with the environment to bring residents into closer contact with their natural surroundings. The concept is to create a pleasant space that people may live, gather and share experience willingly, providing variant residences for employees of the company or guests to rent. Since the land has no relief and had few planning possibilities, the designers wanted to take advantage of the site desert properties to totally fit in place amidst the horizontal lines of the site and surroundings in order to make the most of the immediate environment and create sufficient interesting desert type landscape.

Like building blocks, the modules are assembled together horizontally and vertically. The construction system thus creates a great variety of options for developing each home individually and privacy, creating an affordable housing complex. By stacking the “units in variant geometrical configurations, it was able to break the traditional form of orthogonal traditional apartment buildings. It is these modules that generate and define the interior and exterior space of the residences, providing volumetric and spatial complexity as well as providing diverse visuals, both from the exterior and the interior. The simple arrangement of the units is largely devoid of decoration, focusing instead on the quality of the site, natural materials and residents’ enjoyment of the environment. Traditional construction techniques and authentic materials are combined with a new formal language to create a special residential complex that is in sympathy with both the spectacular mountainous surrounding and coastal location of the site.

“Unforgettable Reflections” It is inspired from the unique poetic value found in the Brutalist architecture as an attempt to overcome its name. The renovation of the building should be a perfect blend of history mixing with present giving a new life to an aging building and an inviting context. Through day and night the façade changes to respond the context. During the day the mirrored faceted façade depends on reflection as a metaphor for reproduction; reflecting the surrounding breaking the formality of the context, emphasizing on the illusionist mood of dissolving the monotonous building into the environment where it acts as an inviting transition between the built and the natural environment. At night the perception is completely transformed as the theatrical scene of historic building illuminates giving life to the building and surrounding area dramatically revealing the unforgettable history and untold stories, conveying a welcoming message to the loneliest city of “Karosta”.

Sequoia Interior . Zamalek . 2015 EXOTIC theme ..

SEQUOIA .2015 ENCODE introduces the ‘Exotic Nature’ theme at Sequoia restaurant in Zamalek,Cairo. The theme revisit natural forms and rules of organization in a homogenous blend of materials and colors. “We were raised far of rural and natural landscape, within urban spaces and the machinic life in cities. In the machine, we live in recursive cycles, stuck to screens, where we miss the act of ‘observing’, our surrounding, ourselves, and our nature. Every year, Ramadan comes to break this cycle, enabling a moment of a step back, of a laid back, to observe, and to revisit what we missed. This year at Sequoia, ‘Exotic Nature’, simply reconsider the ‘Nature’ we are missing. Plants, animals, insects, crystals, lights and materials are introduced in a unique theme that stimulates the eye to reveal the recursive rules in the exotic surroundings. “Reflection” is the corner stone of this natural collection, and consequently, symmetry, mirror and kaleidoscope which manipulate the organization of every element in the space, from the entrance to the pendant lightings, and from the wall to the printed fabrics in a homogenous blend of materials and colors. “

The City

2014 The 6th international Biennale for the artist’s book. Library of Alexandria Cities are complex dynamic systems which identities evolve and mutate over time in response to the dynamic flow of surrounding and embedded forces. What if we consider the city as a vital evolving book? Who would be the writer, the reader, and what would be the content, the script and the message? Are books and cities temporary forms of communications? What is the lifespan of the book ideas or the city identity? The installation debates if architecture is a frozen ideology in time or is it active and responding simultaneously to its context? It explores the development of space that expresses this evolution/ devolution process based on past knowledge and memory, as well as, an expectation. That continual, unpredictable change is inevitably forthcoming due to people different readings of the spirit of the city as parameters to revive the classical idea that a city expresses its own distinctive ethos and values where time is reappeared in the world as something real as a destabilizing but creative milieu

// Educational Workshops

ENCODE is a design by research studio created by the collaboration of architects dedicated to explore innovative design systems on different scales from object to field aiming for a more significant Egyptian presence in the global design market. Based on the mathematical and material logic of natural systems Encode investigate various digital and physical computational tools exploring the potentials of digital design and fabrication techniques to correlate education, profession and design industry. ENCODE team believes in research as a catalyst of innovation in the design industry. During last few years, ENCODE team conducted a series of workshops, seminars and lectures in computational design and fabrication in Alexandria, London, Vienna, Beijing. Also they have been involved in academic, organizational and professional collaborations with specialists in digital design and fabrication industry in Egypt, Germany, Italy, Palestine, China and UK. During these collaborations ENCODE has found nature as a rich world of inspiration through its mathematical and material logic. With strategic industry partners and collaborators, we would be able to develop this knowledge through exploratory workshop environments that focus on learning through making with the latest digital design and fabrication systems through team based projects, dealing with the translation of ideas into atoms, shifting scales between study models & 1:1 fabrication prototypes.

Frozen Tone “Frozen Tone” is an urban artistic installation (Pavilion) proposed at an urban plaza in Alexandria. “Frozen Tone” merges architecture, music; performance and mathematics in a solid form yet interactive with the public. Music and architecture are two faces of one reality where both lead people to experience the journey of life with time as a main factor in discovering them. Both architecture and music express values like rhythms, hierarchy and proportions using two different languages. “Frozen Tone” challenges the separation of the two fields by exploring the common mathematical logic embedded in both sides. The materialization of music will come true by developing the hidden mathematical order of music into a solid state using a special programming language used by architects and musicians to generate forms and melodies which lightens up a path for collaboration meeting with young musicians and architects.

Frozen Tone “Frozen Tone depends on mathematical logic that can translate music into three dimensions in a way to feel, listen, and think about the flow of tones within the architecture blended within the music. The proposed installation reinforces the importance of materiality and the interrelationship of digital design tools with fabrication and assembly methods, investigating the potentials of the plaza as an inviting point during a proposed event which will be organized in cooperation with the management of the proposed location. This would be a good opportunity for the plaza to interact with the flow of people. The proposal encourages everyone to roundabout arts, swing with the activity of musicians, artists, vendors, and street performers emphasizing on its important role as a place for the public to gather promoting culture, history, arts and unveiling the importance of the undiscovered urban context.

Sandworks Beijing August 2010 Tsinghua Architecture summer school incooperation with The Architectural Association school of Architecture (AA ) Teaching team: Tutor: Yusuke Obuchi (Tutor at DRL master programme, AA school of Architecture) Robert Stuart-Smith, ( Tutor at DRL master programme, AA school of Architecture ) Tutor assistants: Ahmed Abouelkheir & Jiah-LEE (35 degree team, DRL, AA school of Architecture)

Xin Wang , Soomeen Hahm (Zaha Hadid Architects)

As a part of The Beijing Biennale 2010, Tsinghua University held a workshop on Parametric Design in collaboration with the Architectural Association school of Architecture (AA) in London. This focused on algorithmic design, techniques, and theory alongside the study of practical precedents. The theoretical aim is to allow the participants an understanding of how parametric design techniques enhance the design efficiency and flexibility from concept design phases to the practical installation. Ahmed Abouelkheir within a teaching team from the AA has conducted the workshop for two weeks with twenty four students to develop an installation for Beijing biennale. The work investigated the development of sand tectonic prototype proposed by Ahmed and his research team toward a design and a fabrication system. The students have been exposed to digital design methodologies, fabrication, and assembly procedures of a large scale wall of sand.

Paramoire 2011 “Designing, modeling and evaluating” freeform geometries as architectural elements which are highly differentiated in their systems and subsystems is a task which is not possible with traditional methods. This is the time of algorithms and scripts for pushing the limits and helping designers pass the limitation of current 3d software. Thinking about complex geometries, depending on appropriate tools, especially software tools, which are capable of creating and controlling these geometries, their properties and simulating different variations in order to integrate a criterion of design guided by evaluating performances of generating geometrics of architectural forms. The participants designed sliding window panels integrating the moire effect with respect to the functional understanding to improve performance in the context of its environment.

Evolutionary Cellular structure workshop is experimentation on the growth of architectural geometry to produce an abstract and homogeneous generative structure system. It presents an algorithmic process where the initial generative rule is based on the growth of Cellular Automata (CA). Unfolding and sectioning techniques was used to fabricate various proto- types. 1:1 Cardboard installation consists of around 400 Voronoi cells that varied in shape and scale. Each had been unfolded/folded and assembled. Organizational and Geometrical Logics: By changing the rule of 2d CA, a complex growth pattern could be obtained. Every cell is being updated according to a rule that depends on its neighbors in all four directions on the supposed grid. In this experiment two grid systems had been tried: rectangular and hexagonal grids. The integration of the emergent behavior of cellular automata and the evolutionary decomposition of Voronoi can lead to an adaptive and performative structure with high aesthetic value.Voronoi3d is used for decomposing a volume by the proliferation of different 2d CA operations which had been visualized its steps in a 3d spectacle. The evolutionary transformation of Voronoi 3d volumes relies on the growth of CA.

Parametric Patterns The workshop introduces the partiticpants to the hidden world of patterns,understanding ornamental styles of the past, to recreate traditional designs, and to innovate with new interpretations of old styles and with innovative styles altogether thanks to the power of new mathematical tools that let us peer into the past and analyze historical sources of ornament with unprecedented clarity in addition enabled us to describe a modern conception of geometry with more precision of what designers of the past could only hint at .New algorithmic tools empowered us to perform calculations that were intractable in previous generations . Finally, depending on technological manufacturing tools ; machines that can turn digital models provided by a computer into a real-world artifact. Standing at the merger of a generative computational design approach, parametric design and digital fabrication are two faces of the same medal. Taken together, these sets of tools provide new opportunities for the application of computers to the analysis and creation of new Islamic visions for patterns

ICE CUBE .2010 Faculty of Fine Arts . Alexandria ICE CUBE is an experimental installation located somewhere between art, architecture and communication design. ICE CUBE is an attempt that focuses on the development and practices of innovative computational tools processes, theories and applying these in creative, socially meaningful responses to challenging design problems. It is all, about the planning of interpretive spaces. Rather than the additive process, where the design is a simultaneously networked, dialectical process, one which develops a dialogue between verbal-conceptual and visual-representational rhetorical techniques.
