PREFACE BY THE MAGISTATE of TAITUNG

There is no limit for people pursuing the aesthetic. With artists perspectives and diverse viewpoints, everything in our lives develops their own ways of wonders even in identical housewares and same pace of lives. Our lives become more pleasant. This is where the power of design and values situated. In Taitung, it seems that everything is just right, suitable conditions, right people, perfect blue, wide sky, and board land. For these, we could accomplish the EXPO. As I proposed to organize the Taitung Design EXPO 18' , the colleagues in the Cultural Affairs Department were really surprised. They said that the design EXPO was used to be organized by central government and there is no counties or cities organized its own design EXPO. I thought that it was the time for Taitung to show the potential and advance to the next level. With six-month preparation and so many creative brainstorming and meetings, my colleagues organize a huge and 36-day EXPO with Taitung aesthetic experiences, which never disappoint me. There are three theme exhibitions and six satellite exhibitions in Taitung Design EXPO 18'. There is a saying that things are right as the people are right. I appreciate many right people have accomplished all these wonders in these nine years. I used to have a statement of international happiness city and a dream picture for Taitung. With design, it gradually comes true and being realized. Many thanks for the people and this place. For the connections of people and the place, everything that arouses the aesthetic experiences could come true in Taitung. Also, Taitung Design EXPO could be a reminder. It notices us what we have and those we lack. The settlement landscapes are not good enough and the citizenship could be better. Those are parts of the aesthetic experiences and might be the more vital parts. It would not be enough for only relying on the government and there is no that powerful one. Besides the arts, crafts, cultural and creative products, and design, Taitung people should also be proud of the clean environments in private and public space, and being sincere and friendly to locals and new friends.

CHIEF CURATOR
Cheng Tsung FENG
It s as difficult to define the urbane cultural exhibition event that is the Taitung Design Expo as it would be to define the City of Taitung in all its diversity. This was true even in the curatorial conferences, where curators from diverse backgrounds each proposed radically different perspectives of Taitung. Our different viewpoints produce different encounters with Taitung. Among us were curators born and raised and thoroughly at ease with Taitung; curators unfamiliar with Taitung but are filled with curiosity. There are qualified elders full of experience, as well as young blood eager to attempt new challenges.Taitung draws in their gaze with its diversity of people, objects, and events. They will take their own fascinating point of entry, and through this mirror of exhibition, reflect the rich silhouette of Taitung. FROM NATURE TO NATURE – International Craft Show, curated by Cheng Tsung FENG, focuses Taitung s wealth of natural resources, and the characteristically prevalent use of natural materials. Taking the spirit of mutually benefit between humankind and nature further to recognize how these materials appear in other regions of the world. They differ in the diversity of culture aesthetics, their utilization of materials, and craftsmanship; with a shared respect and love of nature. Taitung s abundant agricultural and fishery resources are the theme in Cheng Tsung FENG s NEW TAITUNG BOXED MEAL PROJECT, where five professionals from different cities specializing in different cuisines are invited to collaborate within the small space of a boxed meal. Using ingredients from Taitung, they use their detailed sensory, professional experiences and techniques to share in brand new possibilities excavated from Taitung s colors, scents, and tastes. TREND &WAVES – RETRO EXHIBITION OF AUSTRONESIAN INTERNATIONAL ARTS AWARD 2011-2016, curated by Jui Jen SHIN, is based on the Austronesian International Art Awards organized by Taitung County Government. Through a residency exchange program and art creation in Taitung, art exhibitions and award competition, the award has become a productive project unique to Austronesian culture and creativity. Highlights of award winning works from the past have been selected for this retrospective, and award recipients have also been invited to submit new works to create dialogue between the old and new in the exhibition. Cheng Tsung FENG 2015
Cheng Tsung FENG is a Taiwanese young artist. With an old soul in his body, he is fascinated by exploring the wisdom condensed out of time hidden in traditional utensils. He is reluctant to let go of these intangible assets along with traditional utensils. Thus, he inherits them by design and learns to createutensils from their tradition.

Treasure gifts from the land, deliver the warmth with crafts and property
The flourishing art, lively activities in cultural creative parks, hot air balloon festival or the international surfing festival
, these issues are recent hot topic of Taitung. However, an even earlier impression of Taitung before Kaneshiro
Takeshi bicycling among the golden paddy waves would be boxed meal. How could a boxed meal be so significant to stand out from the rural area? Curator Cheng Tsung FENG analyzes boxed meal from Chishang from an artistic perspective in terms of the wares and the food presentation which show particular aesthetics from other regular boxed meal. Hence, he initiated a program to consider boxed meal as a container to delivery stories of Taitung. The projects invited five cuisine experts. With their own professional perspectives and aesthetics, they made use of local ingredients from Taitung, and made painting with the form of boxed meal to present the possibilities of Taitung s property.

I would like to create a landscape with the colors, flavors and gestures of Taitung in the ordinary boxed meal. Since I m from Pinglin, the land of tea, I thus chose Taitung s tea as one of the features in the meals as the connection in-between. I applied slow cooking to imagine the life in Taitung, slowly accumulating the richness and wonderfulness.

CURATOR INTERVIEW
Treasure gifts from the land, deliver the warmth with crafts and property
The birth of crafts root from people s need for life. Through respect and understanding toward nature, the craftsmen draw on various natural materials, and make crafts with bare hands and skills. They closely combine tools, materials and methods and procedures to represent diverse values of practicalness and aesthetics within the succeeding wisdom and experiences. Thus, the practices start from the most common natural materials in Taitung, and came up with four major materials, wood, bamboo, rattan and fiber, and applied techniques. From this point, the artists further explore what Taitung could offer and the applied methods which have never been taken place in Taitung. The same material would generate different aesthetics, techniques due to different places, lifestyle and cultures. Hence the specialized and specific representation of Taitung s characteristics will be highlighted in the exhibition utensils.

Austronesian culture and aesthetic of the island without isolation
2011
2012
47
TREND & WAVES RETRO EXHIBITION OF AUSTRONESIAN INTERNATIONAL ARTS AWARD 2011-2016
Austronesian Arts Award was launched in 2001. It rarely started from the concept of anthropology and extended to a competitive theme of arts within the development of aesthetics. Austronesian culture is one of the important cultural elements of Taitung. In the past, the idea of island always carried a sense of isolation. However, from Austronesian culture, the cultural connections among the cluster of islands were possible to be tranced; they were not separated by the ocean. From the development of Austronesian ethnic groups, we could investigate the adventurous and mobile migrant culture. Such oceanic aesthetics and Austronesia spirit contained a tender and inclusive culture of sharing. One third of Taitung s population speaks Austronesian language; seven groups of Austronesia language situated in Taitung as well. Thus, it should actively connect with external world. In 2012, the title was changed as Austronesian International Arts Award and started the international open call. Through careful consideration, there are abundant resources of landscape and humanity culture in Taitung, why not inviting artists to work in such scenario, having them transform their experience into elements of their creation. Artist-in-residency program was established in such context. The emotion toward nature serves as the common root of Austronesia groups. It is also the origin if Austronesia International Arts Award. We deliberately take the advantage of the development of contemporary art in Taitung. The emerging aims to communicate with the world keeps shaping an art and culture platform of exchange, forming an exclusive brand of Taitung city.

CURATOR INTERVIEW
Re: Defined Taitung makes Taitung more Taitung
In the past, under the scope of globalization, Taiwan s overall economy and urban cities was rapidly expending. It caused a large outflow of rural population. Lacking of people, Taitung s industries were declining. Hence, Taitung was connected to poorness . In the practices of downshifting , it has become a primary issue to consider possible industry and economic mode of production for Taitung. In the rural culture, the deepest connection could be found among people. Through the self-awareness of local people, everyone had the chance to return to his own life experience to promote or re-interpret the development of local tribal cuisine culture or the family dining culture. Different looks of lifestyles became something precious, and even something carrying economic and industrial values; it could further considered as a way of living. With the connection between people and the land, downshifting was truly transformed from mere concepts to actual practices. Taitung s branding is attributed to many people like Guo Li-Jin, who are brave to break through current situation. Hence, these breaking-through gathered together, and became the force to flip the impression of Taitung upside down.

RE: DEFINED TAITUNG City of Happiness TAITUNG
It is not until the scenery has become a part of our lives that we would truly know Taitung.
Taitung, a place that was chosen by five women from different cities, is designated to be where they settle for the rest of their lives. Through interviews in depth, we open the gate to their daily routine, picking up the story pieces and put together all the pieces into the outline of their lives in Taitung.

No one would know where they belong to at the very beginning, until you step out to change.
Do not just take from the city, but to practice how to give back.
To prove your love with cocoon on your fingers and dirt between your toespace.
No matter who you are, just breath with the earth underneath your feet.
Wherever I was from, once I came here, I would deliberately root at the spot.

As Paiwan people, Cudjuy MALIJUGAU grew up in his tribe. When he went back to work in the tribe in Taitung, he dealt with various public affairs in his tribes. In the frequent interaction with the senior in his tribe, he started to reinforce the senses of tribal culture and the establishment of tribal language. Today, more young people return to the tribe. The way how to lead these young people to get to know the tribe and inherit traditional culture, crafting techniques and life spirit has become an ongoing issue. Shu Lun WU reflected her own cultural traces due to the knowledge and devotion to indigenous culture and found a blood connection which was unknown to her before. After working in the art field for years, she felt the urge to offer places of idea-exchanging for art workers. She focused on Austronesian indigenous arts and crafts, and the ecological social issues of eastern Taiwan; she further aimed to connect international contemporary art with contemporary indigenous art. Many nest-returning people came out of their nests, gathering in the session Flowing Nest in Taitung Design Expo 18 . From their own identities, they were developing a brand new cultural discourse and juxtaposing life content and design. Current moment and the moment of ancestors could be seen in the works, which were aimed to form bridges connecting contemporary world.
INTRODUCTION , , ,
Nest , which originally means the house for birds, it refers to home in the exhibition. Home is where lives are nourished and go on. There are abundant natural resources and also many aboriginal groups in Taitung. It s like the home of Austronesian culture as the importance of Taiwan being the mother island of Austronesian culture. Flowing originally means the movement of wind or water and going out to some other place as well. Flowing means leaving the origin to find new possibilities in the exhibition. The exhibition aims at narrating the processes of aboriginal creative design: back to the nest after leaving, trace back to the traditional culture and interpret in their ways. The diversity of aboriginal creative design starts with seeking roots of their culture and transform with innovative design thinking, which builds up conversations with the world.

The profoundly introverted culture of Taiwanese aborigines possess a very distinctive aesthetic commonality in artistic expressions, ranging from self-sacrifice rites ,life custom events to totem spirit which can be seen commonly. Their unrestrained nature appearances and their appealing cultural connotation are even more worthwhile to explore in details. This activity starts is associated with the concept of aboriginal cultural elements and product design to encourage indigenous creative workers to design cultural creative products with their cultural implications and to increase the exposure of cultural and creative designs of the aborigines.
