Welcome Welcome to the 2012 ECIS Leadership Conference in Vienna Vienna has much to offer to our participants in the way of culture, history, music and culinary delights. We hope that in the evenings you will be able to take advantage of this wonderful city. This year the entire programme is online. You are able to access the programme and participants via your smartphone or computer. This allows us to update the changes in real time and to be friendly to our environment. On Friday and Saturday we will have our keynote presentations in the Park Congress where a buffet breakfast is also being served. Breakfast begins at 07:30 and the opening sessions begin at 08:20. Our conference theme is Forming the Future and our two keynote speakers and 80 sessions offered by our featured speakers and leadership teams will discuss this theme. Keynote Speakers

Andy Hargreaves Andy Hargreaves is the Thomas More Brennan Chair in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. Before moving to Boston, he taught primary school and lectured in several English universities, including Oxford. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Educational Change. Andy is leading editor of the first and second International Handbooks of Educational Change, published in 1998 and 2010. He has authored or edited more than 30 books (all but three of them with other colleagues). A number of these have achieved outstanding writing and book awards from the National Staff Development Council, the American Educational Research Association, the American Libraries Association and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and are translated into many languages. Andy’s newest book just released is Professional Capital. He has also recently published Sustainable Leadership (with Dean Fink – 2006), Change Wars (with Michael Fullan-2008), and The Fourth Way (with Dennis Shirley-2009). Andy’s current research is on successful educational change strategies in high performing schools, districts and countries; organisations that perform beyond expectations in business, sport and education; and special education reform strategies achieved through whole-school changes that also benefit all students. Ned Hallowell Ned Hallowell, a child and adult psychiatrist, is a NY Times bestselling author, world-renown speaker and leading authority in the field of ADHD. He was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School from 1983 to 2004, graduated from Harvard College and Tulane School of Medicine, and is the founder of The Hallowell Centers for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Sudbury, MA and New York City. These Centers offer comprehensive mental health diagnostic and treatment services to patients and their families. Dr. Hallowell is best known for the ground-breaking books he co-authored with Dr. John Ratey, Driven to Distraction and Delivered from Distraction, which have sold millions of copies. With decades of experience working with people who have ADHD, Dr. Hallowell has long argued that ADHD is too often misunderstood, mistreated, and mislabeled as a “disability” and that the gifts of this condition are easily lost amid negative comments. He is also a revered authority on lifelong personal betterment and fulfillment. He has authored eighteen books on various psychological topics including the power of the human connection, the childhood roots of happiness, methods of forgiving others, dealing with worry, and managing excessive busyness. Dr. Hallowell is a highly recognised public figure, appearing on numerous national television programmes and has been interviewed for many leading publications. Featured Speakers Mark Atkinson Mark Atkinson is the Founder of Teachscape, Inc., the nation’s leading provider of software tools, digital content and professional services to measurably improve the quality of the nation’s K-12 teachers. He has served as an advisor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Measures of Effective Teaching Project. He currently steers Teachscape’s long range corporate strategy with a specific focus on innovative partnerships to expand Teachscape’s role in the preparation, licensing, assessment and development of K-12 teachers. Mr. Atkinson also advises federal, state and local policy-makers on new approaches to teacher evaluation and licensure. He is a frequent speaker at education conferences and is partnering with Charlotte Danielson for this conference on Assessing and Promoting Teacher Effectiveness. Stephen Barkley Steve Barkley is internationally recognized for his ability to facilitate change and has more than 30 years of experience working in classrooms, schools and universities, building teacher capacity for heightened student success and is well-known for guiding school improvement through coaching, mentoring and professional development. Steve has recently worked with teachers in many international schools and has also served as the facilitator of coaching workshops. He has presented at a variety of international conferences and his dynamic energy and captivating style translate his extraordinary knowledge about life in the classroom and provide the necessary skills for effective change in individual teachers, teams and schools.

Sarah Daignault Sarah Daignault is an instructor at the Klingenstein Center New York and is the former Executive Director of the National Business Officers Association (NBOA). Prior to this Sarah spent five years as the Business Officer at Friends School of Baltimore and four years as the Business Manager at Bryn Mawr School for Girls. During her tenure on the Board of Directors of the Madeira School in Virginia, Sarah was the President of the Board for eight years. She also chaired the Capital Campaign for five years and the Head Search process. Note: Pilar Cabeza de Vaca, former Chair of the ECIS Board of Trustees is now head of this school. She serves on the Boards of the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS) and the Association of Independent School Admission Professionals (AISAP). She has also served on the Board of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) as well as three other independent schools.

Charlotte Danielson Charlotte Danielson is an internationally-recognised expert in the area of teacher effectiveness, specialising in the design of teacher evaluation systems that, while ensuring teacher quality, also promote professional learning. She advises State Education Departments, National Ministries and Departments of Education both in the United States and overseas. She is in demand as a keynote speaker at national and international conferences, and as a policy consultant to legislatures and administrative bodies. Ms. Danielson’s many publications range from amongst others, defining good teaching ‘Enhancing Professional Practice: a framework for teaching’, to professional conversations ‘Talk about Teaching! Conducting Professional Conversations’ to numerous practical instruments and training programmes (both onsite and online) to assist practitioners in implementing her ideas. She will be working with Mark Atkinson in Assessing and Promoting Teacher Effectiveness at this conference.

Featured Speakers Marc Frankel Marc T. Frankel is a consulting psychologist and a senior consultant and principal in Triangle Associates. He consults and coaches with individuals and groups primarily in the health care, education, and technology industries. His experience as a practicing manager and as a trustee gives him first-hand familiarity with issues of leadership and governance in non-profit institutions. Dr. Frankel is a faculty member for several international and national leadership institutes. Together with colleagues at Triangle Associates, Dr Frankel writes extensively on strategy, leadership and governance, and regularly speaks at conferences in Europe, North America, Central America and Asia. He is a trustee at the Wildwood School in Los Angeles, and serves as co-chair of its strategic planning committee.

John Littleford John C Littleford is the Senior Partner of Littleford & Associates. Since 1992 he has been a full time consultant to independent schools and non profit making organisations worldwide. John served as the Headmaster of Breck School, Minneapolis for 18 years and had previously been a teacher and administrator in independent schools. He has had articles published in Fortune, Christian Science Monitor and The New York Times on various educational topics. Mr Littleford’s clients include over 2000 board presidents of independent schools and agencies. He consults with schools and non profits of all kinds including cultural and community organisations and foundations worldwide.

Jill Pancoast Jill Pancoast is Vice President and Managing Partner of The Breakthrough Coach. She has over 15 years of experience in adult education, marketing and sales. Ms. Pancoast is the firm’s senior presenter and author of TBC’s management development coaching programmes for school administrators. Through her work with TBC, Ms. Pancoast has facilitated the efforts of thousands of administrators as they apply TBC’s Management Methodology™ to affect dramatic decreases in their workloads, accompanied by breakthrough improvements in student achievement. Ms. Pancoast holds a B.A. from the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Fran Prolman Dr Fran Prolman is an internationally recognised consultant specialising in educational leadership, school improvement and instructional strategies as well as communication skills, critical thinking and organisational development. Much of her time is spent in multifaceted work with school systems throughout the United States focusing on teacher training methodology and administrative supervision and evaluation skills. Dr Prolman also facilitates workshops for teachers focusing on differentiated instruction, formative and summative assessment, classroom application of instructional strategies that enhance student achievement, critical thinking, and curriculum design for a standards-based classroom. Over the last fifteen years, Fran has made many presentations at state, national, and international conferences.

Featured Speakers Pearl Rock Kane Pearl Rock Kane, a professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University, holds the Klingenstein Family Chair for the Advancement of Independent School Education. A member of the first class of twelve Klingenstein Fellows in 1978, Professor Kane serves as the director of the Klingenstein Center, a position she has held since 1985, and advisor for the Master’s degree programmes. She has been active on several national boards and is a founding member of Brooklyn Prospect Charter School. Professor Kane is the recipient of a number of honors and awards and has published numerous articles. Her current areas of research focus on privatisation, charter schools, and independent school leadership and governance.

Tracy Savage Tracy Savage joined Marts & Lundy in 2002 with twenty-five years of experience in institutional advancement that concluded with thirteen years as Chief Development Officer and Assistant Head of School at The National Cathedral School in Washington D.C. Tracy’s career as an institutional fund-raising leader included comprehensive campaigns, alumni relations and annual fund programming, and planned giving, donor relations and communications. In addition to these core elements of advancement, Tracy’s expertise includes governance, strategic planning, and executive leadership. A veteran speaker for CASE and NAIS, Tracy has received numerous awards and lectures regularly for the Klingenstein Institute at Columbia University, and is a contributing author of four books. She currently serves as a trustee of Norfolk Academy, the Washington Revels, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

Judith Schechtman Judith Schechtman is a Senior Consultant and principal in Triangle Associates, St. Louis, an international consulting firm specialising in leadership and organisational management. Ms. Schechtman holds a masters degree in Social Work from Washington University, St Louis where she was formerly an adjunct professor. Ms. Schechtman consults and trains internationally primarily in the fields of higher education and independent elementary and secondary school education. Ms. Schechtman researches and writes extensively in the fields of leadership, governance, strategy and coaching in independent and international schools. She is a regular speaker at conferences within North America, Europe, and Asia.

FULL DAY PRE CONFERENCE CULTURAL TOUR - PALACES & CHURCHES The guide for the Palaces & Churches tour will pick you up from the Hilton at 09.00am. The first palace will be the grandiose Palais Coburg which is privately owned and now used as hotel, restaurant and the Bel Etage as function rooms. On our walk we will visit the Habsburg Staterooms – the Albertina where we see the rooms furnished as they were in former times. Our next stop will be Palais Lobkowitz, today the seat of the Theatre Museum, where we will see the Eroicahall. We will then pass by Palais Dorotheum (today’s Auction house) and then have the possibility to see one palace in Vienna, which is still privately owned by the Count Edoardo of Pallavicini. If he is in attendance, he will personally welcome and guide us through the staterooms of the Palace. The next palace we will visit on our tour will be Palais Daun-Kinsky where we will stop for a cocktail reception & snacks. We will head to the Hofburg Palace Complex. We will then stop for lunch at one of Vienna’s most famous coffeehouses, the Demel with an old antique interior. The afternoon will be dedicated to visiting the following churches: the Augustiner Church, the Crypt of St. Michael’s church, passing by St. Peter’s Church, St. Stephan’s Cathedral and passing by the Jesuiten Church, Franziskaner Church and the Minoriten Church.

HALF DAY PRE CONFERENCE CULTURAL TOUR - WALKING TOUR OF THE OLD CITY & PRIVATISSIMUM AT SPANISH RIDING SCHOOL We will take you on a stroll through the old city, seeing selected points of interest. You will discover some of the delightful features of Vienna and visit parts of the city only a true Viennese can point out. This tour takes you through various eras from the middle ages up to the present time. The first district is the oldest part of Vienna, where some sections even date back to Roman times. Narrow roads, many still with cobble stones, and the buildings are prime examples of architectural styles from Renaissance to Baroque and up to modern times. The whole place is steeped in history and is delightful to walk around. As a special highlight of this morning walking tour you will hear about and see at the Privatissimum, the secrets of the Spanish Riding School. One of the many treasures of Vienna is the Spanish Riding School, where you will watch the training of the world-famous Lipizzaner stallions in its baroque riding hall. The traditions of the high school are still cherished here. Upon arrival you will enjoy a cocktail in the private banquet rooms, where a representative of the Spanish Riding School will welcome you and give an introduction to the history with commentaries on the tradition as well as descriptions of the breeding of the Lipizzan horses with remarkable insights into the "Secrets of the Spanish Riding School”. You will be able to watch the morning training of the Lipizzaner stallions from a separate VIP area at the Spanish Riding School, where afterwards it will be possible to visit the stables under the guidance of the horse trainer, cavaliers and riders of the Spanish Riding School.

MAPPING THE COMMON GROUND

Despite years of 'international education' there currently exists no continuous, coherent, international curriculum that is clear, simple, accessible. This workshop provides information on a project that addresses this gap. The Common Ground Curriculum begins with a definition of learning and then translates this into a framework that maps the 'what, how, and whether' of learning, providing students, and teachers, with practical toolkits for success. It is the work of a growing group of schools, The Common Ground Collaborative, that is, in itself an innovation: a global network of practitioners talking to practitioners, developing core learning of high quality, but leaving much decision-making where it belongs, with the school itself. ACTION RESEARCH - A WASTED OPPORTUNITY FOR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS? Action Research has been widely discussed in educational circles for over 60 years since being advocated by Corey and colleagues at Columbia University’s Teachers College in the early 1950’s. Surprisingly, though, there is little evidence that it is being used widely by schools to inform and improve teaching and learning, integrate theory and practice, or democratise education. While there is little substantive data on the subject, it appears as though this is particularly true of international schools. Given the relative isolation of the schools and the difficulties in arranging meaningful professional development, this seems to be a wasted opportunity to exploit a potentially beneficial, relevant and cost effective strategy. This workshop will explore the nature, history and benefits of Action Research. Hallowell, practicing child and adult psychiatrist, founder of the Hallowell Center, and former instructor at Harvard Medical School, will explore celebrating the strengths of ADHD amidst the challenges. He will review how ADHD affects academic achievement and offer scientific underpinnings of positive psychology for educators to use to unwrap the gifts embedded in ADHD, while also dealing with the problems this trait creates. Founded in 1707, the Dorotheum has its headquarters in the heart of Europe, in Vienna, a city renowned for its art and culture. Close to 300 years after its foundation, the Dorotheum has grown into the largest German-speaking auction house in Europe, and is one of the leading institutions of its kind anywhere in the world. We will continue the morning programme with a visit to the Austrian National Library. As a very special highlight of this tour you will have a private walk through the “Prunksaal” (State Hall) of the National Library. The Prunksaal is the largest and is considered to be the most beautiful library hall in the world! The national library inventory numbers 6.500.000 entries and nearly 2.500.00 printed works. Some of these are quite valuable, such as the Vienna Dioskurides, a Byzantine manuscript from the beginning of the 6th century and the Gutenberg Bible. Another highlight which even the Viennese do not know about is the Chocolate Museum at coffee shop Demel. We then enjoy a lunch in a traditional Viennese Café-Restaurant where you will not only taste a variety of Austrian cuisine but also learn about the importance and great history of the cafés. Right after lunch we would like to invite you to a special lecture on Viennese Waltz dancing – as Vienna presents more than 500 balls per year and this is a very old tradition. Vienna is not only known as city of music but also as the city of the Viennese Waltz. You will have the unique opportunity to learn how to dance the real Viennese Waltz under professional instruction in Vienna’s most famous dancing school Elmayer. There are both new pressures and new responsibilities for international school leadership in the design or redesign of salary and benefit systems for teachers. While boards raise tuition and parents and/or corporations pay for those increases, boards are increasingly asking heads to define how the 85% of most day school budgets is spent. That 85% generally represents the salary and benefits package for all staff. This session will explore how board, administrators and teachers can study together salary and benefit system designs that are more flexible and deliver a more mission-centered message to staff than a longevity based salary scale or one combined with positions of responsibility. ECIS awards stipends of up to £3000 for the purpose of enhancing international education. Margaret Sanders Scholarships Graduating students in ECIS member schools are encouraged to apply for a $5000 scholarship for the year 2012/13 offered by Margaret Sanders Foundation. This annual scholarship, of up to 5,000 USD, is available to graduating students studying at ECIS member schools. To be eligible to apply through ECIS, students must be applying to 501 (c)(3), US chartered, degreegranting institution and be currently studying at an ECIS member school. ECIS Outreach Grant The ECIS Outreach Programme is designed to encourage and support a wide range of diverse student projects and activities within ECIS member schools as part of service learning. ECIS is committed to promoting cross-cultural awareness and understanding, and international education amongst member schools and their communities in all regions of the world. Outreach grants in the past have helped to build a Community Centre in Moshi, Northern Tanzania; create a school library in Soweto, and start a fish farm at a Zambian orphanage. Funding is available for up to £3000 for successful applications and the deadline for applications is 30th June 2012.

ECIS & Peter Ustinov Outreach Grant Sir Peter Ustinov established a foundation in 1999 which backs commendable aid initiatives. The Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation has made it its mission to help children who are often the victims of prejudice. ECIS have developed this award, with funding from the Foundation, to encourage and support student projects and activities as part of service learning. Ustinov Outreach Grants in the past have looked at ways to fight prejudice in rural Africa, Uganda and Indonesia. Funding is available for up to €3000 (plus €500 for the production of a documentary) for successful applications and the deadline for applications is 30th June 2012.

ECIS & TIECare International Outreach Grant The TIECare International Outreach Grant has been designed for Middle School student projects that involve service learning or community service. This is a new Grant that has been sponsored by TIECare International for 2012. Total funding available is $4000 – with no one project over $1,500.
