The next palace we will visit on our tour will be Palais Daun-Kinsky where we will stop for a cocktail reception & snacks. We will head to the Hofburg Palace Complex. We will then stop for lunch at one of Vienna’s most famous coffeehouses, the Demel with an old antique interior. HALF DAY PRE CONFERENCE CULTURAL TOUR - WALKING TOUR OF THE OLD CITY & PRIVATISSIMUM AT SPANISH RIDING SCHOOL We will take you on a stroll through the old city, seeing selected points of interest. You will discover some of the delightful features of Vienna and visit parts of the city only a true Viennese can point out. This tour takes you through various eras from the middle ages up to the present time. The first district is the oldest part of Vienna, where some sections even date back to Roman times. Narrow roads, many still with cobble stones, and the buildings are prime examples of architectural styles from Renaissance to Baroque and up to modern times. The whole place is steeped in history and is delightful to walk around. As a special highlight of this morning walking tour you will hear about and see at the Privatissimum, the secrets of the Spanish Riding School. One of the many treasures of Vienna is the Spanish Riding School, where you will watch the training of the world-famous Lipizzaner stallions in its baroque riding hall. The traditions of the high school are still cherished here. Upon arrival you will enjoy a cocktail in the private banquet rooms, where a representative of the Spanish Riding School will welcome you and give an introduction to the history with commentaries on the tradition as well as descriptions of the breeding of the Lipizzan horses with remarkable insights into the "Secrets of the Spanish Riding School”. MAPPING THE COMMON GROUND
Ballroom Klimt 2
Despite years of 'international education' there currently exists no continuous, coherent, international curriculum that is clear, simple, accessible. This workshop provides information on a project that addresses this gap. The Common Ground Curriculum begins with a definition of learning and then translates this into a framework that maps the 'what, how, and whether' of learning, providing students, and teachers, with practical toolkits for success. It is the work of a growing group of schools, The Common Ground Collaborative, that is, in itself an innovation: a global network of practitioners talking to practitioners, developing core learning of high quality, but leaving much decision-making where it belongs, with the school itself. ACTION RESEARCH - A WASTED OPPORTUNITY FOR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS? Action Research has been widely discussed in educational circles for over 60 years since being advocated by Corey and colleagues at Columbia University’s Teachers College in the early 1950’s. Surprisingly, though, there is little evidence that it is being used widely by schools to inform and improve teaching and learning, integrate theory and practice, or democratise education. While there is little substantive data on the subject, it appears as though this is particularly true of international schools. Given the relative isolation of the schools and the difficulties in arranging meaningful professional development, this seems to be a wasted opportunity to exploit a potentially beneficial, relevant and cost effective strategy. This workshop will explore the nature, history and benefits of Action Research. Participants will be given an opportunity to consider the following questions: • What is Action Research? • Why is Action Research a valuable tool for school improvement and professional development? • What can schools do to encourage staff members to engage in Action Research? Europe, with 23% of the world’s international schools, will be examined in more detail together with the ECIS membership. Nick Brummitt, Managing Director, The International School Consultancy Group, UK Children of Haiti Project Forrest Broman, President, The International Educator, Cummaquid, Massachusetts, USA Keynote Address: Mining Magnificent Minds: How to unwrap the gifts embedded in ADHD In this presentation, Dr. Edward M. Hallowell, practicing child and adult psychiatrist, founder of the Hallowell Center, and former instructor at Harvard Medical School, will explore celebrating the strengths of ADHD amidst the challenges. He will review how ADHD affects academic achievement and offer scientific underpinnings of positive psychology for educators to use to unwrap the gifts embedded in ADHD, while also dealing with the problems this trait creates. There is no easy solution for the management of ADHD in the classroom, or at home for that matter. After all is said and done, the effectiveness of any treatment for this disorder at school depends upon the knowledge and the persistence of the school and the individual teacher. Dr. Hallowell will provide effective tips on teaching children with ADHD. He will discuss how these kids can transform over the school year and change from being your most frustrating students to your most rewarding. With the persistent and consistent application of the techniques contained in these tips, and with the cooperation of the rest of the school faculty, the parents, and the student, you can see frustration evolve, step by step, into mastery and success. Join Dr. Hallowell as he invites you into his world of ADHD and shows you how to mine the magnificent minds of your students. SPOUSES AND CO-DELEGATE TOUR The first stop of the day will be Dorotheum Auction House which the world's oldest major auction house! Founded in 1707, the Dorotheum has its headquarters in the heart of Europe, in Vienna, a city renowned for its art and culture. Close to 300 years after its foundation, the Dorotheum has grown into the largest German-speaking auction house in Europe, and is one of the leading institutions of its kind anywhere in the world. We will continue the morning programme with a visit to the Austrian National Library. As a very special highlight of this tour you will have a private walk through the “Prunksaal” (State Hall) of the National Library. The Prunksaal is the largest and is considered to be the most beautiful library hall in the world! The national library inventory numbers 6.500.000 entries and nearly 2.500.00 printed works. Some of these are quite valuable, such as the Vienna Dioskurides, a Byzantine manuscript from the beginning of the 6th century and the Gutenberg Bible. Another highlight which even the Viennese do not know about is the Chocolate Museum at coffee shop Demel. We then enjoy a lunch in a traditional Viennese Café-Restaurant where you will not only taste a variety of Austrian cuisine but also learn about the importance and great history of the cafés. Right after lunch we would like to invite you to a special lecture on Viennese Waltz dancing – as Vienna presents more than 500 balls per year and this is a very old tradition. Vienna is not only known as city of music but also as the city of the Viennese Waltz. You will have the unique opportunity to learn how to dance the real Viennese Waltz under professional instruction in Vienna’s most famous dancing school Elmayer. But not only the waltz will be shown, you will learn a little more about Viennese tradition and rituals of the former imperial Vienna. Be surprised who will show up and tell you about the past. After learning the Viennese Waltz you will head for a walk through the former imperial Vienna Local purveyors – these are the shoemakers and tailors, jewellers and confectioners.

PROMOTING SUCCESSFUL LEARNING AND LIFELONG JOY IN THIS CRAZYBUSY WORLD In this presentation, participants look at the opportunities we have in today’s world and the struggles with our busy environments. Modern life has gone wild. The average manager handles more data points in one day than he or she handled in a month just a decade ago. Conversations are cut short and communication derails as frenzy becomes more and more the norm. Email, the BlackBerry, cell phones and all the rest of our electronic devices have created exciting opportunities, but they have also created unique and potentially catastrophic problems never before seen in human history. If we’re not careful, we will get so busy we will never stop and think at work. Without a system or a plan, a manager can spend a day or an entire quarter without spending ten minutes actually thinking. Run ragged by the multiple and simultaneous demands he or she must handle, today’s manager has almost no time to do what the human brain is uniquely equipped to do, namely think creatively. In this presentation, participants will learn: • How to identify the most dangerous drains on your time and energy, and how to develop a daily rhythm that works for you • How to replenish energy and focus throughout the day and how to prevent the state of overloaded circuits • How to focus and prioritise so that you and the people you manage can get the most out of their work ECIS would like to thank the International Creativity Academy (ICA) Kuwait for sponsoring Ned Hallowell's participation at this conference. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SCHOOL'S BIG CELEBRATIONS Many international schools are preparing (or should be) for their 40th, 50th or 60th (or greater!) anniversaries. This is an ideal time to re-engage your far-flung alumni and former teachers, teach your students and parents about the school's history, and show your appreciation to faculty and staff. Telling and sharing stories through videos or web-based applications, gathering testimonials, and planning special events and gatherings....it's an important time to build community spirit and gain an all-important sense of institutional history. CHANGING THE SALARY SYSTEM MODEL: NOW IS THE TIME
Ballroom Klimt 2
There are both new pressures and new responsibilities for international school leadership in the design or redesign of salary and benefit systems for teachers. While boards raise tuition and parents and/or corporations pay for those increases, boards are increasingly asking heads to define how the 85% of most day school budgets is spent. That 85% generally represents the salary and benefits package for all staff. This session will explore how board, administrators and teachers can study together salary and benefit system designs that are more flexible and deliver a more mission-centered message to staff than a longevity based salary scale or one combined with positions of responsibility. The opportunity to modify current salary systems, with faculty buy in, and to ensure that schools are able to attract, recruit, nurture and retain value added teachers requires looking at old problems with a new lens. SHINE: USING BRAIN SCIENCE TO GET THE BEST FROM YOUR STUDENTS Why do so many people hate their jobs? Why do so many more merely tolerate their jobs rather than commit to finding work they love? Why do most people fall far short of fulfilling their potential at work? These are the questions Dr. Hallowell answers based on the book he wrote. One of the most common questions he helps people address is job dissatisfaction. As a specialist in learning differences and ADHD, he has been helping people solve the riddle of peak performance in their own lives for decades. In his presentation, he introduces “the Cycle of Excellence” – a five-step plan that draws on his own work of helping people to overcome their problems to become more productive in everyday life. The five steps in the Cycle of Excellence are: • Select: Put the right people in the right job and give them responsibilities that “light up” their brains. • Connect: Strengthen interpersonal bonds among team members. • Play: Help people unleash their imaginations at work. • Grapple and grow: Enable employees to overcome pressure to achieve mastery of their work. • Shine: Use the right rewards to stimulate loyalty and people’s desire to excel. Dr. Hallowell shows how each step is critical in its own right and translates into actions a manager or worker can do and do now. So, let Shine be your guide to inspiring excellence in your team. ECIS would like to thank the International Creativity Academy (ICA) Kuwait for sponsoring Ned Hallowell's participation at this conference. INTERNATIONAL MINDEDNESS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Ballroom Klimt 3
Making international mindedness a core value for community building, Vienna International School has successfully piloted a series of programmes developed by the non-profit organisation Who I Am to help students embrace their cultural identity and emphasise the importance of multiliteracies. Students involved in the Who I Am Club have made a school wide effort receiving CAS (community service hours) involving both primary and secondary schools, as well as the Parent Teacher Association to transform the focus of school culture to become more culturally and linguistically inclusive. This lecture is designed to provide practical strategies supported by qualitative research, documentaries, and testimonials that will enable community building through international mindedness in International Schools. Bruckner
How can teachers support citizenship and human rights education? With the emergence of new social trends, increased interdependence and global changes, the success of education in these areas depends significantly on teachers. Based on the University model of governance, we will discuss a two-tier board concept and discuss the pros and cons of changing toward such a model. IBOOKS TEXTBOOKS FOR IPAD: THE NEXT CHAPTER IN LEARNING
Ballroom Klimt 1
iBooks has revolutionised reading on the iPad allowing us to put even more engaging learning content in the hands of our students. Today's learners have grown up immersed in technology and they need textbooks made for the way they learn. In this hands-on session, participants will take a detailed look at iBooks on the iPad, and learn how to create a fully interactive digital textbook using iBooks Author on the Mac. You will see how easy it is to repurpose existing content you have already created for your learners and turn it into dynamic, interactive textbooks featuring audio, video, study cards, quizzes and more. Your learners will thank you for attending this session! Mark Pentleton, Apple Distinguished Educator, Europe

LEARNING SPACES - A PARADIGM PARADIGM SHIFT SHIFT FOR FOR EDUCATION EDUCATION- IPADS AND MOBILITY
Ballroom Klimt 2
Learning spaces must change to allow the full range of learning styles, devices, and opportunities to prepare students for a very different world. Hillbrook School is a K-8 coed independent school located in the Silicon Valley. Two years into a 1:1 iPad program, the way students are able to learn effectively has changed and classroom spaces must reflect that. Silicon Valley companies emphasise creative learning spaces. This workshop will talk about the research on flexible, dynamic learning spaces now and the prototype learning space that Hillbrook has built. Don Orth, Director of Technology, Hillbrook School, Loas Gatos, California, USA Tim Springer, Nero, Inc, Geneva, Illinois, USA
1145 - 1245 Berg
TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH WALK THROUGHS Making the change from management to leadership requires that administrators get out of the office and in to the classrooms. In that time is short and demands are great, how then do we make the most of the time? Hear suggestions, testimonials and advice on making the most of your classroom visits to guide instruction, professional development and teacher appraisal. Ronald Roukema, Head of School, Marymount School, France

BULLYING AND VICTIMISATION IN OVERSEAS MIDDLE SCHOOLS
Bruckner
Not sure how to address bullying in your school? First we will define bullying and its components. Once defined, we will look at research from several schools conducted in the fall of 2011. The session ends with ideas to reduce bullying from administrators and counselors to parents, teachers, and students themselves. Kent Blakeney, Independent Education Researcher, Austria
