Na última edição da Web Summit, a maior conferência mundial de tecnologia que, desde 2016, se tem vindo a realizar em Lisboa (Portugal), a start-up etíope foi a grande vencedora, de entre 700 participantes, da competição PITCH promovida pela multinacional KPMG. In the last edition of the Web Summit, the largest world technology conference that has been taking place in Lisbon (Portugal) since 2016, the Ethiopian start-up was the winner, out of 700 participants, in the PITCH competition promoted by the multinational KPMG.

O trabalhO desenvolvido pela Labibela Global-Networks foi considerado de relevância excepcional para a transformação digital do sector da Saúde no Leste de África. O projecto, que deu o primeiro lugar na competição à Labibela Global-Networks, designado ABAY-CHR, e que se iniciou em 2019, tem por objectivo a digitalização dos processos de gestão hospitalar. O ABAY-CHR permite a simplificação dos procedimentos hospitalares e tem, comprovadamente, melhorado a qualidade do atendimento prestado pelos hospitais. Desde que começou a ser implementado, o ABAY-CHR já permitiu digitalizar 1,2 milhões de registos de pacientes. Wuleta Lemma, co-fundadora e CEO da Lalibela Global-Networks, sublinhou, ao receber o prémio, que a pandemia só veio dar ainda mais ênfase à importância do trabalho que tem sido realizado. “A Covid-19 mostrou a importância de termos registos médicos seguros, o que, para mim, deveria ser um dos direitos humanos essenciais”, afirmou. Mas, a Labibela Global-Networks está longe de ser a única start-up do continente africano cujo trabalho inovador tem vindo a ser reconhecido internacionalmente. Também a start-up angolana ‘Appy Saúde’ foi recentemente premiada, na categoria de eHealth, duranthe wOrk developed by Lalibela Global-Networks was considered of exceptional relevance for the digital transformation of the Healthcare Sector in East Africa. The project ABAY-CHR, started in 2019 and aims for the digitization of hospital management processes. ABAY-CHR allows the simplification of hospital procedures and has improved the quality of care provided by hospitals. Since its implementation, ABAY-CHR has already enabled the digitization of 1.2 million patient records. Wuleta Lemma, Co-founder and CEO of Lalibela Global-Networks, underlined, upon receiving the award, that the pandemic only came to emphasize the importance of the work that has been made.”COVID-1 has shown we all need a secure medical record, which should be considered as one of the essential human rights.” He stated. Lalibela Global Networks is far from being the only African Start-up whose innovative work has been internationally recognized. The Angolan start-up Appy Saúde has also recently been awarded, in the eHealth category, during the international ITU Virtual Digital World 2020 Conference, held last October, organized by the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations Agency for the telecommunication sector. The Appy Health developed a mobile application, available since 2017, which allows users to reserve medicines and order in nonprescription pharmaceutical products, make appointments and enroll for health insurance. The application also allows its users to identify the nearest pharmacy, the best prices and the availability of medicines. At the moment, Appy Saúde Application gives access to more than 1500 pharmacies, 320 private clinics and 275 public hospitals in Angola. A Appy Saúde desenvolveu uma aplicação móvel, disponível desde 2017, que permite aos seus utilizadores reservarem medicamentos e encomendarem produtos farmacêuticos não sujeitos à receita médica, marcarem consultas e aderirem a seguros de saúde. A aplicação permite ainda que os seus usuários identifiquem a farmácia mais próxima, os melhores preços e a disponibilidade dos medicamentos. Neste momento, o aplicativo da Appy Saúde dá acesso a mais de 1500 farmácias, 320 clínicas privadas e 275 hospitais públicos em Angola. De acordo com notícia prestada pela Disrupt Africa, a start-up angolana pretende expandir as suas actividades para outros países do continente, nomeadamente: África do Sul, Rwanda, República Democrática do Congo e Namíbia. Independentemente destes projectos que, entre outros, obtiveram notoriedade internacional, o mais recente relatório da Disrupt Africa (High Tech Health: Exploring the E-Health Startup Ecosystem Report 2020) mostra, de forma inequívoca, que os últimos anos têm sido marcados por um boom no sector e permite também ter uma visão ampla da diversidade dos actores e das tecnologias que estão a criar soluções inovadoras e, por via disso, a atrair, cada vez mais, os investidores internacionais. Conforme o relatório, o número de health-techs no continente africano cresceu, nos últimos três anos, 56,6% havendo, neste momento, 180 start-ups activas. Um dos dados interessantes do relatório – que detalha o crescimento do investimento ao longo dos últimos cinco anos – é que mais de metade do valor deste investimento aconteceram já em 2020, em plena pandemia do novo coronavírus. Nos primeiros seis meses do ano passado, as health-techs de África conseguiram investimentos na ordem dos 90 milhões de dólares.
Com a pandemia, uma das áreas que tiveram maior desenvolvimento foi o das consultas on-line. Na Nigéria, a eHealth Africa criou uma plataforma para permitir o acesso rápido dos cidadãos a consultas médicas sem necessidade de estes se deslocarem a clínicas ou hospitais. Ainda na Nigéria, também a Helium Health, que durante os últimos anos se tinha focado, sobretudo, na digitalização dos registos médicos hospitalares, desenvolveu uma plataforma de consultas on-line que conta já com dezenas de hospitais e clínicas ligadas à sua plataforma. Uma outra área que conheceu um grande desenvolvimento ao longo do último ano foi a da distribuição de medicamentos e equipamentos médicos através do uso de drones. O caso mais conhecido é, certamente, o da Zipline, a qual, já antes da pandemia, se tinha destacado no Rwanda, pelo uso de ferramentas de diagnóstico inovadoras, quer na agilização, quer na disponibilização junto da comunidade médica e hospitalar de meios de diagnósticos sofisticados. No primeiro caso, refira-se, por exemplo, à sul-africana Erada que criou um teste para a malária, através da análise da saliva. O teste permite ter resultados em 5/10 minutos e evita a colheita de sangue. Já a queniana Illara Health desenvolveu um kit de diagnóstico para diabetes e hipertensão – que tem sido usado por médicos e farmácias em zonas rurais do país e que usa ferramentas de Inteligência Artificial.Há que recordar que, já em 2014, África já se tinha destacado pela criação da Dabadoc, plataforma que permitiu a conexão de médicos e pacientes de Marrocos e Tunísia. plans to expand its activities to other countries on the continent, namely: South Africa, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Namibia. It provides a wide view of the diversity of the players and the technologies that are creating innovative solutions and, therefore, to attract even more international investors. According to the report, the number of health-techs on the African continent has grown by 56.6% over the last three years, with 180 active start-ups at the moment. One interesting data of the report - detailing the growth of investment over the past five years - is that more than half of the value of this investment happened in 2020, in the middle of novel coronavirus pandemic. In the first six months of last year, health-techs in Africa managed to invest around US$ 90 million.

With the pandemic, one of the areas that experienced further development was the online consultation. In Nigeria, eHealth Africa has created a platform to allow for quick access of citizens to medical appointments without travelling to clinics or hospitals. Again, in Nigeria, Helium Health, which in recent years had been focusing, mainly, on the digitization of hospital medical records, has developed a platform for online consultation which already has dozens of hospitals and clinics linked to the platform. Another area that has seen great development over the past year has been the distribution of medicines and medical equipment via drones. The most well-known case is certainly that of Zipline, which, even before the pandemic, had stood out in Rwanda, due to the use of innovative diagnostic tools, both in speeding up and in making sophisticated means diagnosis available to the medical and hospital community. In the first case, the South African startup Erada, which created a saliva-based test for malaria, is an example. The test allows results in 5/10 minutes and avoids blood collection. On the other hand, Kenyan Illara Health developed a kit of diagnosis of diabetes and hypertension, using Artificial Intelligence tools that have been used by physicians and pharmacies in the rural areas of the country. It should be remembered that, in 2014, Africa had already stood out with the creation of Dabadoc, a platform that allowed the connection of doctors and patients from Morocco and Tunisia.

O músico angolano Yuri da Cunha vai realizar, em Abril, quatro concertos denominados “Yuri da Cunha canta Teta Lando”. Nos dias 9 e 10, estará ao vivo no Royal Plaza Hotel, seguir-se-á depois uma live na TV Zimbo, no dia 17 de Abril. Já para o dia 1 de Maio, está agendada uma homenagem à figura de Alberto Teta Lando, através de uma incursão aos mais variadíssimos álbuns discográficos do artista já falecido. Considerado um dos melhores intérpretes da sua geração, Yuri da Cunha cantará temas como “Tia Chica”; “Independência”, “Vou Voltar”, “Semba Rytmée”, “Menina de Angola” e “Esperanças Idosas”. Recorde-se de que o músico enalteceu já em álbum outro grande expoente da música angolana, Artur Nunes. Há sítios que a partir do momento em que entramos apaixonamo-nos imediatamente. De repente, sentimo-nos completamente em casa e já não nos apetece voltar a sair. Esta é a melhor maneira para descrever o que sentimos ao entrar na “Taberna”, como os clientes lhe chamam. Muito descontraído mas elegante, diferente de todos os outros espaços que pode encontrar em Angola, com uma decoração muito bem conseguida que muda de dia para dia, o Background está definitivamente entre os melhores bares de Luanda. O chão de madeira escura dá um ar antigo e sóbrio, que é contrariado pelo mobiliário brincalhão. As mesas, todas baixas, são paletes de madeira ou caixotes virados ao contrário e as cadeiras são uma de cada nação, algumas clássicas, outras de verga. Os candeeiros nas mesas têm o ar de que foram tirados de um filme dos anos 20 e os que estão por cima do bar são chaleiras e bules que foram adaptados. O tampo do balcão está coberto de desenhos, assinaturas e frases que os clientes vão escrevendo quando lá vão. Além da decoração, a música também torna a Taberna completamente diferente de todos os outros espaços nocturnos de Luanda. Reggae, afro-jazz, música afro-americana, soul. Outro ponto que temos mesmo que mencionar, claro, são os cocktails deliciosos e as tapas e petiscos que começaram a ser servidos recentemente. Sem dúvida um local a visitar de Quarta-feira a Domingo à tarde.

This is the most accurate way to describe what we feel the moment we step inside the “Taberna”, as customers call it. It has an elegant but very relaxed ambience, different from all the other bars you’ll find in Angola, and a striking décor that changes every day making Background one of the best bars in town. The dark wood floor adds an old and sober touch to the place and contrasts with the bar’s playful furniture. The coffee tables are made from wooden pallets or crates turned upside down and all the chairs are different, from wicker chairs in a classic style to vintage wooden chairs. The lamps on the tables look like the ones used in movies of the 1920s and those above the bar are kettles and teapots turned into ceiling lights. The counter top is covered with drawings, signatures and messages left by customers. Besides the décor, the music you’ll hear around here is also completely different from all the other night venues in Luanda: Reggae, African jazz, African-American music and Soul. But there’s another noteworthy detail: Background’s delicious cocktails, snacks and tapas, which only recently made their debut; a spot worth visiting from Wednesday through Sunday afternoon.
