Sunday 18 October 2015 TIMBUKTU Cert PG Mali (2015) 1hr 37mins Dir: Abderrahmane Sissako Oscar nominated, this film is a study of a tragedy of our times, by the director of the much admired Bamako. The ancient city of Timbuktu has been occupied by fundamentalists, here portrayed as immature young men intent on imposing apparently random restraints on the lives of the residents. “Sissako’s film revels in the joy of people, of music and of film, making Timbuktu is a formidable statement of resistance in itself.” Jonathan Romney, The Guardian

Sunday 13 December 2015 CONFIDENCES TROP INTIMES (Intimate Strangers) Cert 15 France 2004 1hr 45 Dir: Patrice Leconte Anna (Sandrine Bonnaire) turns up at the office of a financial adviser, mistaking it for a psychiatrist’s treatment room on the same floor. Needing an urgent appointment, she does not give William (Fabrice Lucini) the opportunity to explain her error. Although she soon finds out he is not who she thought he was, Anna continues to visit and disclose intimate details of her unsatisfactory married life. Frustrated and lonely, William is happy to continue as an informal counsellor, and the two forge an odd but mutually beneficial relationship.

Sunday 21 February 2016: Still Life UK 2014 Dir: Uberto Pasolini Cert 12 John May works for a council in London arranging funerals for those who have no friends or family, to give them a dignified send off. One of his searches for next of kin brings him into contact with someone’s abandoned daughter and they strike up a friendship. Sunday 20 March 2016: Charlie’s Country Australia 2014 Dir: Rolf de Heer Cert 15 Charlie is an older Aboriginal man living in a community in the northern part of Australia. Losing his patience with the authorities’ interference with his efforts to continue with his cultural traditions, he decides to head off alone into the wild. Sunday 17 April 2016: Difret Ethiopia 2014 Dir: Zeresenay Berhane Mehari Cert 12 The true and gripping story of Hirut, a 14 year old girl, who is kidnapped on her way home from school and imprisoned until she agrees to marry one of her captors. She escapes, and shoots her husband-to-be as he pursues her. She is then tried for his murder.
