LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

COVER STORY RITA WILSON

W

I am particularly proud of this edition’s cover featuring the multitalented Rita Wilson (pg. 40). Rita was a delight to work with and her casual California rock-n-roll vibe fits our summer issue perfectly. Also if you haven’t done so already, visit iTunes and download her most recent album.

Some of my most favorite pieces in this issue can be seen in the When In Home section of the magazine. There we profiled a beautiful modern abode nestled in the bluffs, preached high atop La Costa Beach (pg. 68). Another fun feature in this section is the piece entitled The Sea’s Gift, which guides you on your quest for the perfect beachside rendezvous (pg. 78).

So much has changed over the last three years, but oddly I find myself writing each editor’s note in the same spot, in a sunroom located in the picturesque Fig Garden neighborhood. The Central Valley has been good to us, and Donna, along with myself are continually thrilled and pleased by the support of the community. In that spirit we are announcing the return of the Luxury Awards. This year we want more than our focus group to weigh in on the nominations. An open, online write-in nomination form will be available on our website. Please visit www.cvlux.com and cast your vote for this year's nominees. Official voting will begin in August of 2016 and will be celebrated at the beginning of the New Year. Happy voting!

hile shooting the cover of this most recent edition, the team stayed in sunny Malibu, California; and it was there where I got the inspiration for this years summer edition, our third summer edition since starting the company in 2013. The surf and sand served as a backdrop for our evenings, which was reminiscent of my childhood in Santa Barbara. I knew I wanted to take our readers on a journey to the coast and I believe that is what we have achieved in this most recent edition, capturing the essence of the casual beach lifestyle, with our own LUX twist.

Cheers,

cosmetic surgery by Dr. Mark Chin, MD

ou see a model’s bustline and want that same augmented look. You bravely make the appointment and you can’t wait for your breast surgery. Afterwards, your bustline is too low and not as big as you thought. “This isn’t what I imagined!” What did you expect? You’ve had three children and your tummy sticks out like you’re still pregnant, but you don’t want a tummy tuck and instead you choose liposuction. Now your tummy still sticks out and hangs even more than before. What did you expect? You inherited good looks, but also a nose which is too large for your face. You picture this cute little nose, but after the splint is removed, it’s still larger than you wanted. What did you expect? The most important part of a doctor-patient relationship is the doctor understanding the patient’s desired goal and determining if it is a realistic outcome. The patient’s health, anatomy, skin quality and elasticity, as well as the reasons for wanting plastic surgery are taken into account, and the doctor should communicate to the patient what he or she thinks they can achieve. Communication is the key. I have been using computer imaging in my plastic surgery practice for over 20 years. The Vectra XT 3D computer imaging system is what I currently use (www.canfieldsci.com/imaging-systems/vectra-xt-3d-imaging-system), now with 360-degree body imaging. It helps me communicate with the patient so that he or she can fully understand their own anatomy. It demonstrates the asymmetries in the face and body and how what you see in the mirror is different from photographs. At the initial consultation a photograph is taken and we analyze your skin complexion and structures in 3D imaging. It is an amazing tool and we can change the angles on the body in order to show you areas that you haven’t even seen before. The computer can “morph” or change your own body (vs. someone else’s body) and we can simulate potential changes that might result from surgery. It is not a promise of your outcome but a simulation based on the limitations of your anatomy. I believe that patients are more satisfied when they have a better sense of what can be achieved, and aren’t surprised after the bandages come off. In fact, many patients comment that it gave them realistic expectations and many have said that the outcome was actually better than the imaging.

Tips on being a satisfied customer: 1. Research your doctor thoroughly. I recommend choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Not all advertised “cosmetic surgeons” are trained plastic surgeons. 2. Choose a range that would be acceptable to you. For example, decide on a breast size that you would be happy with, whether is was a little bigger or smaller. Your perception and reference point always changes after the surgery and you will look at yourself to see if things can be improved from the new you. Remember that any size implant is larger than you started with and larger implants have potentially more problems. 3. Make sure your consultation is with the doctor who will be doing the surgery and not just a “patient consultant” wanting to sign you up for surgery. 4. Understand your anatomy, abnormalities, skin quality, age of tissues, and stress to the tissues from weight changes and pregnancies, and even ethnic contributions. 5. Perfection is a goal and rarely achieved. The patient’s own perception determines that, despite how good the surgeon’s ability or reputation is. 6. Have more than one consultation or discussion with your surgeon so that all your questions and concerns are answered. 7. Be at a healthy weight before contemplating surgery. You want to be around to enjoy your new figure. Weight changes after surgery can alter the final outcome. 8. Understand that surgery is not an exact science. Tissue quality and ongoing aging will determine how long a procedure’s effects last. 9. Understand that revisions may be needed from time to time to improve the outcome (the patient’s goal may change), fix a condition that arose during the healing process (scar tissue), or be staged to have a better and safer outcome. 10. Be careful not to bring in photos of people that you would like to look like who have completely different body types than you do. Say you are my personal trainer and I hold up a photo of a guy that I would like to look like. You say, “Hey, isn’t that Bruce Lee?” You would probably chuckle after gazing at me up and down, or roll over laughing. 11. Have realistic expectations and follow your doctor’s preoperative and postoperative recommendations so that you can achieve the best outcome for you. You are a team. 12. Use a tool such as computer imaging to simulate potential changes deemed possible by your doctor. Morphing apps or Photoshop can change the body beyond what surgery can actually accomplish. With Vectra XT you can see the “after,” before … or I suppose you can guess?

Here are a few examples of how the Vectra XT can be utilized: Faces: Beauty is not just skin deep. Shift deep structures and demonstrate the improvement in the jowls, turkey gobbler neck, and show fullness in the cheek after a facelift and brow lift. The complexion can be analyzed for discoloration, redness and volume loss. Chin: Demonstrate a more defined chin and jawline with a chin implant, with or without submental liposuction. Ears: See how pinning back protruding ears will look. Noses: Remove the hump, lift up the drooping tip, narrow the nose at the bridge, tip, or nostril, straighten crooked nose, or augment the rounded tip for a sculpted look. Breasts: Demonstrate different shapes, sizes and position of implants on the patient’s own chest. Demonstrate when a breast lift is necessary and show how an implant with the lift can enhance the result. Do you want to see what you look like in a bikini? No problem. Abdomen: Show a flatter and tighter abdomen with a tummy tuck, as well as compare results with liposuction alone. Hips and flanks: See how you would look without that muffin top, or how transferring the excess fat to the buttock for size and contour would look. Liposuction: See what you could look like without a double chin or an extra bulge that just won’t go away could look like after body contouring.

“I wanted to write a song about being grateful.”

H

ere at CVLUX we love interviewing influential women from all across the country, but we can’t deny that there is something exciting about a conversation with a California native. Growing up in Hollywood, actress, producer and singer, Rita Wilson, recalls, “I knew all the short-cuts; we would go to movies at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. It just seemed normal to me.” In fact, there is a lot about Rita Wilson’s not-so-normal life that she lets inspire her. Born to a Bulgarian father and a Greek mother, Rita’s experience as a firstgeneration American would come into play years later during her career as a producer. But first was a childhood in Hollywood and an acting career that spanned television, film and the stage. With roles on shows like M*A*S*H*, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Girls, parts in films like Sleepless in Seattle, Now and Then, and Runaway Bride, and the lead role of Roxy Hart in the musical Chicago, Rita’s performances have run the gamut. “With acting you are playing a character, but you still have to be very present and in the moment,” Rita explains. “With song writing there’s nowhere to hide; you’re singing about something extremely personal because you’ve written about it.” Oh, yeah–Rita decided to start writing songs, releasing her album of 60’s and 70’s standards, AM/FM, in 2012, as well as another self-titled album of original songs on March 11 of this year. However, no matter how successful Rita’s endeavor into songwriting seems, she had no plan to become a verified triple threat. “I didn’t set out to write an album for myself. [Songwriter] Kara DioGuardi and I became friends. I said I wished I could write a song, and Kara said, ‘What makes you think you can’t?’” Kara then asked Rita if she felt like she had something she wanted to say. And Rita did. “I wanted to write a song about being grateful,” she tells us.

cvlux.com @cv_luxury

43

“All life experiences are things that you’ll use at some point creatively.”

Kara and Rita worked on a song, bringing in songwriter, Jason Reeves, to further flesh out the tune. At a certain point, Rita says she became incredibly emotional, “…because how the song sounds and feels is exactly what I wanted it to feel like.”

could be good at [fill in the blank].” How many of us stop at the thought and continue doing the things we’re already doing? But Rita’s willingness to take risks and stay true to herself have a pretty good track record of paying off. We could all stand to learn a little something from her.

Since then, Rita’s written over 60 songs with no sign of slowing down. “I love songwriting so much. I feel that creatively it’s so satisfying. I feel connected to it in a way I wasn’t expecting.”

It was Rita who championed a little known film called, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Written by and starring the then-unknown, Nia Vardalos, it was certainly a risky move to produce. But Rita trusted her gut and her own experiences as the child of immigrant parents. And did it pay off? The 2002 romantic comedy became the highest-grossing independent film of all time, with a sequel currently in theaters in which Rita plays a role.

When asked about her songwriting process, Rita says anything and everything can lead to a great track: “Every songwriting process is different; you don’t quite know what to expect. Sometimes you’re with a writer and you’re talking for three hours, just yakking about life, and sometimes you get to work right away. Sometimes it’s really emotional and sometimes it’s really funny.” What really tells her a song is good? “I’m always attracted to storytelling in the songwriting. And the melody–something you can’t get out of your head.” When Rita is asked about musicians who inspired her, the list is impressive, including Carole King, James Taylor and Fleetwood Mac. She mentions Linda Ronstadt as an inspiration, as well, who didn’t write songs, but interpreted them in a beautiful way. “The disco era had really great women, Stevie Wonder and the Supremes; the 80’s had the Police…” Rita adds. We could honestly keep cataloguing Rita’s favorite musicians, but that would be almost as long as the list of varied roles Rita’s had throughout her acting career. In fact, her first album AM/FM was a sort of homage to all the artists that have inspired her, filled with covers of 60’s and 70’s radio hits and accompanied by contemporary singers with hefty resumes. Accompanied by the likes of Jackson Browne, Faith Hill and Sheryl Crowe, Rita makes a compelling entrance into the world of music, flanked by established crooners. Rita’s new album is filled with songs she’s penned herself, inspired by life as she’s lived it. “There’s a song called What You See is What You Get … women are complex characters; they aren’t just the obvious, so this song plays with that. Girls Night In is a song about exactly that: being with your girlfriends, cutting loose, letting your hair down, you don’t care what you look like—but I wrote it with a man and a woman!” Each of Rita’s new songs show her willingness to share herself and her openness to the creative process. (Bonus points to the male songwriter who was able to accurately musicalize a girls’ night in, by the way.) Rita’s decision to begin writing songs is a big one, since we’ve all had moments where we’ve thought, “I should try something new,” or “I think I

Even though her focus is currently on music, Rita’s past experiences on stage have certainly helped her career. “The live performance of both, (and) the connection to the audience is something I really love and thrive off of because the audience is your partner in a way.” Looking back on Rita’s life, connection to her past experiences and to others has really shaped her career. If she hadn’t kept in touch with her Greek roots, she might not have supported the film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding as much as she did. If she hadn’t been so friendly and connected to talented songwriters, she might not have gotten the initial push she needed to enter the world of music. Rita, it turns out, has some thoughts on the matter. “All life experiences are things that you’ll use at some point creatively, whether you’re trying to access an emotion for a character or you’re trying to put it in a song’s lyrics or melody, which can be painful. It can feel like ‘oh god I’m going there,’ which can ultimately be the most satisfying because it’s more truthful.” It’s fitting that Rita’s decision to first write a song was driven by a desire to express gratitude, since now she has more inspiration than ever. “I feel really humbled by the people I’ve worked with,” Rita reflects, and who wouldn’t? Rita’s acted alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. She’s produced successful films that have garnered worldwide acclaim. And the producers on her latest album are definitely no strangers to accomplishment. Top Nashville songwriters such as Matraca Berg, Jessi Alexander and Sugarland’s Kristian Bush played a part in Wilson’s album, as well as producers, Nathan Chapman, Richard Marx, John Shanks and Babyface. Rita just finished up a residency at New York’s famed Café Carlyle, with a nationwide tour to follow. While that means Rita’s got a lot to think about logistically, the newfound singer in her certainly hasn’t slowed down. At the beginning of our interview I asked, as an ice-breaker, what her favorite breakfast cereal was growing up. Rita Wilson picked the most musical answer, crying out, “Rice Krispies, of course—snap, crackle, pop!”

Poolside

EXTRAVAGANCE HOW TO SPICE UP YOUR SUMMER SOIREE LIFESTYLE EDITOR PANDORA VANDERPUMP SABO

T

his summer is all about decadence and lavish entertaining and I love it! Poolside meals no longer need to be a matter of simplicity; let’s embrace their potential for stunning visuals and delicious displays. Have the ladies over for a beautiful lunch, host a swanky evening cocktail party, or set up a dramatic dinner table, laden with extravagant details. Here are some of my favorite summer inspirations.

Overstuffed Tables & Jewels The more the merrier this summer. The combination of a relaxed and easy poolside meal with a decadent tabletop display makes for a really memorable experience. The easiest way to spoil your guests is with tabletops overflowing with tasteful abundance. Jewel encrusted ice buckets, fabulous flowers, twinkling candles and outdoor chandeliers … this is the season to really go for it! Bright Summer Bouquets Summer brings a variety of bright flowers and greenery and this is the perfect way to adorn your table. Try mixing up the way you present your florals: you don’t have to stick to just one vase in the center of the table. A large, low arrangement in the middle of the table is easy to talk over … couple it with some tiny vases filled with individual stems peppered around the table and you have the perfect combo.

Playful Pastels & Prints Summer is the easiest time to embrace your playful side! Try pairing bright, beautiful pastels with floral prints for a striking summery tablescape. You can make your display more grounded with a black or grey napkins and placemats if you don’t want to be too “twee.” I love slightly unusual color combinations: lilac paired with reds and pinks, pale blues with crisp mint, or nectarine with dark purples … be unique! Decadent Details Heaping bowls of lemons, tiny crystal vases, tassel napkin rings, jeweled placemats … this summer is all about attention to detail. Adding some unusual visual elements is the perfect way to achieve the summer abundance that defines this season.

They are fantastic for a light but decadent lunch when you want to seriously impress your guests (or yourself!) with minimal effort. They are sexy, unconventional and incredibly delectable. Have fun! PENNE WITH ROCK SHRIMP, ASPARAGUS & ARUGULA This is one of my favorite summer meals. It’s light in flavor but filling and decadent. The rock shrimp are sweet and juicy; the arugula is spicy; the tomatoes are creamy and bright. All in all, it’s easy to make and an instant crowd pleaser! Enjoy! Ingredients Makes 4 portions 1 box of penne 3 tbsp olive oil 1 yellow onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, smashed 2 tsp chili flakes 1 tsp dried basil 1 tsp dried parsley 2 cans diced tomatoes 1 can tomato paste 1/2 cup white wine 6 asparagus spears cut into 1-inch pieces 30 rock shrimp, washed 2 handfuls arugula 1/2 cup basil, sliced into ribbons 1/4 cup Parmesan Salt and pepper

Preparation Add some olive oil to a sauté pan over medium to high heat. When hot, add the onion, and sauté until translucent. 2. Add the garlic, chili flakes, dried basil and parsley, and sauté for 30 seconds. 3. Add in the diced tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir to combine. 4. Add in the wine and stir. Let pasta sauce cook for about 10 minutes until the tomatoes have broken down and the sauce has thickened. 5. Meanwhile, boil your pasta according to package instructions. 6. Add the asparagus to the sauce and lightly cook for about 2 minutes until just tender. 7. Add in the rock shrimp and the arugula. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring often, until the shrimp are cooked through, but not overcooked. 8. Stir in half the basil, as well as the Parmesan, salt and pepper. 9. Let sauce rest over a low heat until pasta is ready. Add pasta to the sauce, along with 2 tbsp of the pasta water. Stir to combine. Check your seasonings. 10. Plate and garnish with basil. 1.

FRESH PAPAYA WITH LUMP CRAB & PAPRIKA This is one of my favorite dishes, as it is both delicious and extremely impressive to serve! I like to garnish the dish with pistachios for an added crunch, brightly colored berries or edible flowers — anything that adds an amazing pop of color! Ingredients 3 ripe papayas 1/4 cup light mayonnaise 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp fresh chives, chopped 1/8 tsp paprika Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 large tomato, diced 1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat (picked over for cartilage and shells) Shelled pistachios Berries and micro greens to garnish Preparation 1. 2. 3.

62

Cut each papaya in half, and then cut a strip off the opposite side, so the papaya will sit flat on the plate without rolling around. Scoop out the seeds. Mix the mayonnaise, lemon juice, chives, paprika, salt and pepper together. Carefully fold in the crabmeat and tomatoes. Scoop into papaya halves, sprinkle with salt and pepper, garnish with mint and berries, and serve.

STONE FRUIT & JALAPEÑO SALSA This is one of my favorite toppings to use on just about anything, or simply serve with tortilla chips! The sweetness from the stone fruit (and don’t be limited to nectarines and plums … this salsa can be made with anything similar), the spiciness of the jalapeño, and the tanginess of the lime, make for a tongue-tingling side dish. 1 nectarine, diced 1 plum, diced 1 small bunch cilantro leaves, chopped 1 red jalapeño, diced lime, juiced 1 tsp red chili flakes Salt and pepper, to taste Mix all of the ingredients into a bowl. Include the jalapeño seeds if you want extra spice. Enjoy!

VODKA MINT LEMONADE This is a great cocktail to serve in the daytime because it is as refreshing as it is delicious! Ingredients 4 lemons, sliced into quarters with no seeds 1 bunch of mint, leaves removed 7 cups of cold drinking water ½ cup sugar, to taste 12 oz Vanderpump Vodka, or a little less than 2 cups (more if you like it strong!) Ice cubes Lemon slices to garnish Instructions 1.

2. 3. 4. 5.

In a blender, add the lemon slices, a handful of ice, 2 cups of water, the sugar and half of the mint. Blend until the mixture is foamy and the lemons have broken up into small chunks. Strain the lemon mixture into a jug and add the rest of the water. Stir in the vodka, the rest of the mint leaves and some lemon slices. Add more sugar if too tart and more vodka if you’d like it stronger! Serve over ice and garnish with lemons and mint.

High Profile Lifestyle Editor Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst Photographer Theresa Jebian

We caught up with Pediatric Opthamologist, Dr. Clair Hilchie, currently part of the team at Eye Medical Center at California Eye Institute on Herndon and Millbrook in Fresno. Dr. Hilchie began her career as a Medical Speech Language Pathologist in East Central Illinois, but after five years in that field, changed course and pursued a medical degree, ultimately becoming the eye specialist and surgeon she is today.

Dr.

Hilchie grew up in Ottawa, Canada as the youngest of three girls; she was the first in her family to go into the medical field, something her sisters, Lynn and Lena, and her father, now 85, are immensely proud of. Even though they still live in Canada, Dr. Hilchie and her family remain close, despite the distance. She adds that her father has had the biggest impact on her life. An amazing and intelligent man who is a triathlete, musician, painter and financial officer, he is also very kind and humble. He was a wonderful role model for her growing up, and continues to be to this day. Lynn describes her sister as, “a very high achiever and very passionate about everything she does,” and states that her best assets are being open-minded and eclectic. This is reflected in Dr. Hilchie's interesting and extremely diverse entertainment choices. She enjoys Pema Chodron’s spiritual works, but reads a variety of children’s literature, as well, including anything by John Green, Captain Underpants, and Dr. Suess. She’s currently reading The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. When asked about her favorite movies, she mentions a fascinating variety, as well: Star Wars (2015), the Martian, Avengers and Age of Ultron and Pride & Prejudice. As far as her “eclectic” musical tastes, she enjoys Al Jarreau, Vivaldi, Mozart, Roy Clark, Miles Davis, most Swing music, the Beatles and John Denver. She would be happy listening to Don Giovanni one night and Paul McCartney the next. She is also a very good Backgammon player and excelled at this mind boggling game in high school as well as college.

Dr. Hilchie has worked hard for most of her life and her resume is just as diverse as her entertainment choices. She has been doing odd jobs since she was 12, including doing product demonstrations in the 8th grade. She worked as a gymnastics coach, a baker, a bartender and as a receptionist for an Emergency X-Ray Department.

“I would buy sick guinea pigs from pet stores, nurse them back to health and return them,” she tells us. “I had two pens in my basement that separated the boys from the girls and I was able to place them with good homes. I had two guinea pigs that lived long lives: Miss P who lived to nine years of age and Maisy who lived to be eight!" Dr. Hilchie says the most comfortable room in her home is the living room, which is crowded with animals that all get along with Dr. Hilchie and her daughter (age 14). She and her daughter share a love of horses and they enjoy riding. She says that her recent goal of purchasing “the perfect horse” was accomplished when she bought her favorite possession: her horse, Mickey. This remarkable woman and doctor’s best advice is “Just try.” She goes on to explain: “You never know what will happen. If in doubt, just try something. I didn’t know what to study in the University so my late Mother recommended that I just take courses that I thought would be interesting. I ended up majoring in Philosophy with a minor in Linguistics. A general arts education really does broaden one's thinking.” Dr. Hilchie is an admirer of women in how they manage to work, take care of their families, excel in careers and still find moments of laughter. Life can be complicated, but to do it with grace and humor is amazing, she says. Even though Dr. Hilchie says her favorite pizza is a real Chicago Deep Dish pizza, overall, she lives a healthy lifestyle, juicing and eating gluten-free food. Dr. Hilchie loves the foothills, especially during the spring, with blossoms in full bloom. After living in Fresno for the past two years, she says spring is her favorite time of year, but she would call it a perfect day to attend a Summer Concert outside at the Zoo. When we asked her where she would live if she could live anywhere in the world, she said, “Home is where you make it; inner peace is a journey without a landscape.”

An animal lover, Dr. Hilchie admits she is a sucker for any animal up for adoption at a shelter or that needs help, and currently has three dogs and two cats, all rescues. She started a guinea pig rescue program and had this for years. cvlux.com @cv_luxury

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' A SPECTACULAR MODERN ARCHITECTURAL HOME NESTLED IN THE BLUFFS HIGH ABOVE LA COSTA BEACH IN MALIBU, CALIFORNIA MIKE RAGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEXANDER VERTIKOFF ARCHITECTURE BY FREDERICK FISHER INTERIOR DESIGN BY TRACY MURDOCK, TRACY MURDOCK INTERIOR DESIGN WRITTEN BY

Above the open floor plan, a double-height, slanted ceiling with rectangular skylights creates drama with mahogany framed windows positioned to offer painterly seascapes of the expansive Pacific Ocean. To create a casual, inviting feeling, Tracy used muted colors and natural linen on the custom-designed sectional that is composed of several different conversation groupings. A giant sea coral mounted on Plexiglass brings the ocean in. Adjacent to the great room, the glass enclosed Japanese tea room shares the same spectacular view for guests to enjoy. Overlooking the great room is a mezzanine office loft where the light is constantly changing. As the sun passes over the house, lines and angles are cast upon the walls throughout the day. It’s a unique vantage point where dramatic views through the assorted sizes and shapes of the picture windows provide constant inspiration.

Building upon the Asian elements found throughout the home, Tracy completely gutted the two upstairs bedrooms and created a serene Japanese style master suite with a private ocean view balcony. The bed that sits on tatami mats was built high upon a mahogany platform to capture the Pacific views and the sound of the waves. In Japan, Tracy found a rare Meiji Period screen with Samurai warriors colorfully painted on each panel which she dismantled and hung strategically over the bed. Art glass designer Robert Kaindl’s spectacular hand-blown museum glass bowl, “Giant Anthias,” in red, sits in the foyer. A wall of shoji doors slide open to reveal a Zen-like master bathroom of black granite with randomly placed white stone pebble tiles. The Dornbracht plumbing fixtures throughout give the bathroom a modern feel.

REASURES Contributor Lizzy Dastin

E

verywhere you look, from blogs and social media to mainstream publications, museum exhibitions and even university classrooms, it’s clear that street art has taken over the art world. Scratch that; street art has taken over the world, art or otherwise. Part of the reason street art is resonating with modern culture, and in fact forging the zeitgeist, is because of its accessibility and immediacy. Regardless of whether we self-identify as art enthusiasts, city-dwellers tend to notice scrawls they pass on their way to work, want to snap that selfie with an outdoor mural and feel compelled to spout their opinion on Banksy. We don’t have to carve out an entire day to see quality art at the Getty, swerving down a narrow parking ramp, only to wait for a tram to take us to that gleaming, pinkish, travertine palace. Today we can discover equally transformative art on our neighborhood sidewalks, on a freeway ramp, or on a wall we pass a hundred times a week walking to a favorite artisan coffee shop. Street art allows the world of aesthetics to integrate with the world of everyday life, and people are digging it. One of the most sophisticated voices on the street scene today is graphic designer-cum-street artist, Paige Smith. Smith, who also goes by the moniker, “A Common Name,” as a self-deprecating nod to the ordinariness of her birth name, is best known for her “Urban Geodes,” mini-sculptures placed on the streets and exhibited in the gallery. It takes a rare versatility to operate in both spaces and Smith navigates these worlds with ease; her installations are just as satisfying in the sexy lobby of the Standard Hotel as they are in a derelict phone booth in Los Feliz.

76

cvlux.com @cv_luxury

“Urban Geodes” are sculptures created to resemble their naturally-occurring namesake, while themselves being formed synthetically. Early in Smith’s career, they were made out of hand-cut and folded die-cut paper, but more recently she’s fashioned them using individually-cast resin. Since geodes are formations made and found in nature, the fact that Smith fabricates this process out of man-made materials and places them in ultra-urban settings presents viewers with an engaging duality between nature and industry. On the one hand, Smith’s art calls attention to the growing disappearance of a nature that’s untamed by man, yet on the other hand, it celebrates the aesthetic beauty of technology and signals the power of the urban space. We tend to think of street art as being mural-sized and brightly-colored, aggressively grabbing our attention. Smith’s work denies these expectations and requires thoughtful, keen sleuthing to discover. Rather than install these geodes in places where their visibility would be maximized, Smith instead seeks out overlooked, modest, forgotten spaces, such as the cracks in between bricks where the mortar has chipped away or the inside of a broken drainpipe. Then, like a mastermind cracking the code of a puzzle, she clusters the individual pieces into groups and slips them into these spaces so perfectly it is as if the geodes formed there on their own. Smith’s subtle, elegant contributions to the streets are the pot of gold at the edge of a rainbow or the pearl tucked inside an oyster. They invite us to notice where we are and actually look. More than look, Smith’s art encourages us to be playful and discover, turning the streets into our own private map and the geodes into our rightful treasures to hunt.

Expanding and crystallizing like a geode herself, Smith is evolving her practice to focus more on travel and collaboration. For example, this past fall she was an artist in residence in Dubai, partnering with a fashion and lifestyle brand to transform everyday objects, such as lamps, tables, planters, benches and rocking chairs, into designed art pieces reawakened by her geodes. While in the UAE, Smith was able to study the city and acclimate to its fascinating amalgam of the ultramodern and the neglected. Drawn to the latter, she discovered a burned down building in a souk and was inspired to install geodes there, seeing power, beauty and opportunity for growth from ultimate decay. Along these lines but more locally, Smith is slated to be an artist in residence at the Maitland Historical Museum in Florida to add her geodes to the crumbling cement of its façade. Whether she’s working covertly on the streets or in a sanctioned, corporate space, Smith’s art is guaranteed to spark, to inspire, and to incite. The aesthetic elegance of her work and the magical, surreal impact it has on viewers is truly a gift to any city and space.

I have always been intrigued by sand play; as a child I would dig in it, sift it, build with it, pour it, enjoy the feel and smell of it, pretend with it, and explore how it moves. Today, I’m all grown up doing exactly the same ... but in a slightly different manner. A passion of mine is hosting elaborate events. I say elaborate, because I don’t simply like to design an event space—I attempt to create another world for others to experience through my events. This does not always mean doing something exquisite in terms of design; sometimes it’s just a matter of envisioning a world you’d like to experience, and doing what you can to make it reality. Special milestones in life deserve a celebration. Whether it’s a proposal, a significant birthday, wedding anniversary or a promotion at work, it simply does not feel right to let these occasions slip by without a splash of luxury and indulgence. Often, we want to mark the event in “style,” but working out the details can turn into a challenging dilemma. What is the perfect way to spoil someone and show them they are loved, appreciated and valued above all others? Time spent around a table tasting phenomenal wines, eating delicious food, while watching waves crash against a gorgeous beach is where my heart is truly happiest. With this vision in mind, here are a few suggestions. First, check the park rules. You want to be sure you can set up tables and start a fire. Check the tide; there is nothing worse than a soggy party rescued from the waves. "Weight" for the wind by planning for decor that is heavy. Tied up or tied down. Whenever entertaining outdoors, hope for the best, but always prepare for the worst. Have a backup plan that is easilly enacted if the weather goes awry.

In creating a safe haven one only has to look to the ever-changing watercolors from the sea to set a tone for serenity and calm in the home. The ocean pallette of blue and green ranging from the depths to the surface join a wave break of white splashing onto the sandy shore. Adding the elements of glass, wood, silk and metal create a tour de force only found in nature. Combining a mix of styles such as modern and traditional with a touch of the tropics will give you a sense of unpredictable harmony.
