LETTER from the EDITOR

O

ver the last four years, we at CVLUX have made it our mission to bring everything luxury to the Valley. In this issue we celebrate everything home and garden. One of my favorite parts of this edition is the inclusion of our Meet The Experts section located in the back of the book. We have featured the top businesses and professionals in the community for all your home buying or selling needs. In this section we cover everything from mortgages and realtors to builders and interior design, and give you the opportunity to compare and contrast, making your next home buying experience an easier one. Mike Ragan, Interiors Editor, has worked tirelessly to bring you four phenomenal homes to get your creative juices flowing. Whether you want a taste of something traditional or maybe a little more modern, we have you covered. My favorite feature in this section is entitled Summer House, which profiles a gorgeous estate located in Southampton. Shades of blue invite guests to relax and unwind while being surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Southampton coastline. Andrea Towers, Features Editor, had the pleasure of interviewing Sarah Wynter for our cover story. The profile entitled, Up Close & Personal, is a candid look at this Australian-born actress who currently resides at her home in New York. You may recognize Sarah from the hit Amazon series, Goliath, where she costars alongside Hollywood actor, Billy Bob Thornton, who nabbed a Golden Globe for his performance in the series. Wynter opens up about everything, from her early days of acting, in both film and television, to how she juggles her hectic career, while being a mother to three rambunctious boys. In case you missed it, we celebrated the annual Luxury Awards in January. This year the awards benefited the Saint Agnes Holy Cross Center for Women. Over 450 people attended this year’s soiree. To see additional photos please visit www.cvlux.com. I encourage you to flip through the pages of this latest edition, and as you do, let your mind wander and explore all the possibilities that your home has to offer. Cheers,

High Profile Masterful Gardener Features Editor Ann T. Sullivan Whitehurst Jon Reelhorn (Owner) & Crash

1. OCCUPATION Owner, Belmont Nursery. That means I do a bit of everything from selling plants to growing them, and from serving my staff of 50 to loading and unloading trucks. There’s rarely a dull moment. We are a grower of trees, shrubs and flowering plants and serve homeowners, landscape professionals and garden centers throughout central and northern California. 2. YOUR FIRST JOB Professional baseball player. I was a pitcher. I chased my boyhood dream for five years or so after playing at Fresno State. What a terrific opportunity. A highlight was joining the 1980 (oh, that’s a long time ago …) world champion Philadelphia Phillies in major league spring training. That team was loaded with future hall-of-famers, personalities and now terrific memories: Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton and Tug McGraw, among others. What a kick for a young kid out of college to have that opportunity. My friends tease me by saying that I’ve never had a “job,” and that I work at my hobbies. First baseball and now growing flowers. 3. WHERE YOU WERE BORN Stockton, CA. I came to Fresno State as a freshman on a baseball scholarship. I was a city boy attending an ag school, intimidated by the farmers’ kids who knew all the answers to the professors’ questions in class.

30

cvlux.com @cv_luxury

4. LAST GOOD MOVIES YOU SAW Hidden Figures. I saw it at Sierra Vista Mall and thought it was a keeper, one that I’d buy in the future and watch over and over at home. 5. PERSON WHO MADE THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE My college baseball coach, Bob Bennett. He’s quite famous among the baseball community and he made a huge impact on my life. He took me as a young kid, a prima donna of sorts, and molded me into a respectful, confident yet humble man, mature enough to compete with the best players in the world. I owe him a lot for molding me into a man from a cocky boy. 6. FAVORITE VACATION SPOT I’m a big Central Coast fan, but my go-to place is Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park. It’s right in our backyard and often not crowded. My peace of mind comes from a day hike with my yellow lab, Crash, in the Giant Sequoias. It’s majestic, quiet and complete with fresh air and the awe of nature. Bring a lunch and a friend and leave your watch at home. What’s not to like?

7. FAVORITE BEVERAGE I’m a wine drinker but not much of a wine expert or wine snob. It’s a simple pleasure and just fun. I recently had a Cabernet aged in barrels previously used to age bourbon. It was very interesting because I’m a bourbon whiskey fan and a red wine fan. 8. YOUR LAST MEAL I’m a big Alaskan king crab legs fan. I’d take an allyou-can-eat, hot crab legs meal with plenty of melted butter … and chocolate ice cream for dessert, of course. 9. FAVORITE REGION OUTSIDE CALIFORNIA I recently travelled to Tuscany, Italy. Wow, what fun. I went on a tour with a small group of nurserymen from throughout the U.S. We were treated so well. I’d go back in a flash. 10. THE WORLD WOULD BE BETTER PLACE IF … If we “loved our neighbor as ourselves,” a principle that’s made a huge impact on my life. As a Christian, I am humbled and blessed by the opportunity I have, the things that I have been given and the hope that He gives us for the future.

SUMMER HOUSE ANTHONY BARATTA DESIGNS AN INCREDIBLE SEASIDE HOME IN SOUTHAMPTON

WRITTEN BY MIKE RAGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK ROSKAMS INTERIOR DESIGN BY ANTHONY BARATTA NEW YORK ARCHITECTURE BY ERNEST SCHIEFERSTEIN ARCHITECTURE, NORTH HAVEN LANDSCAPE DESIGN BY PERY GUILLOT, SOUTHAMPTON

One of Anthony’s favorite rooms of the house is the double story living room/great room, featuring a huge custom area rug he designed, made by Stark Carpet. Other pieces Anthony designed for this room include the custom sofa by De Angelis, NYC and the Celtic design needlepoint pillows made by Lois Chernin.

A

nthony Baratta designed this newly built summer house on a seaside pond in the Hamptons for a couple, their children and grandchildren. The color scheme was inspired by the natural surroundings of the house: sea and sand. It is a beautiful blue-grey-green with khaki and white neutrals. Furnishings and color scheme are balanced by antique pine millwork, mahogany furniture and antiques with blue and white Delft accents. Anthony’s other favorite room is the dining room because he loves creating oval rooms. The room is anchored by a pair of pewter chandeliers by Price Glover, NYC and custom handpainted wall tiles by Solar Antique Tiles, NYC.

His clients wanted a house they could use in the summer with their extended families. They wanted it to be sophisticated yet casual since they are at the beach. There are two separate wings for the owners and their guests. One of Anthony’s challenges was to make an authentic shingle style house for modern living. The Master Suite features custom Anthony Baratta designed carpet by Stark Carpet and king bed made by Thomas Newman, NJ. In the Master Bath the Tigerwood maple vanity and medicine cabinets were made by Thomas Newman, NJ and the wallpapers are custom Anthony Baratta designs.

The owners love to entertain inside and out, so a beautiful pool and relaxed porch area featuring wicker furniture by Bielecky was built. Anthony has worked for the family for almost 30 years and they have done many projects together. He says, “The clients have exquisite taste and it’s always a pleasure working with them because they support our creativity and understand the process of building a custom home.”

alifornia beach life embodies a sophisticated, yet laid-back casual lifestyle. Days are made up of swimming, surfing and an endless variety of sporting activities for young and old alike, followed by cool evenings enjoyed al fresco twelve months of the year. The Pacific coastline gives us an inspired palette including every shade of blue along with greens and natural sand colors. The combo of sights and sounds provided by nature are all that one needs to relax and rejuvenate. You can keep the feeling of calm by using this cool color scheme for decorating inside and out. Everything should be simple and natural in its rawest form from teak, to cotton and glass, reflecting back to another day at the beach.

hen I think of great coastal design, the quintessential go-to guy is Barclay Butera. His client asked him to create a modern, glamorous and comfortable beach house that was fresh, relaxing and serene. This was successfully achieved by using all the beach colors of her spectacular ocean front view: soft blues, sand and crisp white. Accompanying this oceanic palette, the floors were stained to match the sand below and dark woods provided depth and structure.

All product is from the Barclay Butera Interiors Showrooms

The most incredible feature of the home is the view. It’s breathtaking! Looking up the coast provides an ever-changing visage of life. Another wonderful part of this project is that the client trusted Barclay and team with the vision right from the beginning. They loved everything, and it was truly a dream project, one that Barclay was proud to put his name on.

Close Personal & AN INTERVIEW WITH SARAH WYNTER Features Editor Andrea Towers

Photographer Jordan Tiberio Hair Lia Hakim Makeup Antonio Estrada for Giorgio Armani Beauty

IT’S COLD OUTSIDE, WHICH MEANS SARAH WYNTER IS DEALING WITH ONE OF HER TOUGHEST JOBS: FINDING ACTIVITIES TO KEEP HER CHILDREN BUSY DURING BAD WEATHER DAYS. “There’s such fear in me when it’s Friday and they’re calling for snow,” Wynter admits. “The thought of being stuck inside with three young kids who are boys and need to run around is hell on earth.” Luckily, there’s enough card games and Candyland to go around— and when that fails, there’s always Food Wars. “You can use anything you want in the kitchen and you have ten minutes, and the rest of us have to hide upstairs,” Wynter explains the game that her kids love. “We can’t see what you’re making and you have to make something really cool out of food. We get a kick out of it.” If you know Sarah Wynter’s face, you definitely know her name. The Australian-born actress has graced the small screen in pivotal roles on hit television shows such as 24, American Odyssey, The Good Wife and Person of Interest. Currently, she’s starring as Gina Larson in the Amazon series, Goliath, alongside such greats as Billy Bob Thornton, Maria Bello and William Hurt.

52

cvlux.com @cv_luxury

“I just felt like it was an incredible opportunity to have my name included,” Wynter says about her recent role. “And to get to know them professionally and personally was just a treat. I felt so incredibly lucky to be invited to this amazing festival of fun.” “Festival of fun” is an interesting choice of words to describe Goliath, considering the series from David E. Kelley is a serious legal drama that combines complex stories with conspiracy theories and frequent talk of life and death. But that’s Wynter: optimistic, energetic and grateful for the type of work she gets to do, especially as a woman in Hollywood. When I talk to Wynter, she’s just come from celebrating Goliath at the Golden Globes with her star-studded cast. “That’s not my normal life, getting dressed up in a gown and borrowing jewelry and drinking champagne and ogling movie stars,” she says of the experience, though she does make sure to tell me that she managed to get a hold of Billy Bob Thornton’s Golden Globe later in the night. (Don’t worry, she gave it back.)

“THAT’S NOT MY NORMAL LIFE, GETTING DRESSED UP IN A GOWN AND BORROWING JEWELRY ...” — Sarah Wynter

56

cvlux.com @cv_luxury

Born in Newcastle, Australia, Wynter’s interest in acting prompted her to move to the United States when she was 17. She studied drama in New York, and earned her SAG card thanks to landing a role in the pilot of Sex and the City. She credits her early beginnings as an actor and her love of the craft for keeping her grounded throughout the years, and especially now.

Wynter’s character in Goliath is a widowed mother who seeks revenge for her husband after his wrongful death. “She’s a very tough survivor. She’s a mother, and I’m a mom, so I could certainly relate to that,” Wynter explains. Asked if she’s learned anything from playing a character who is a mom, despite the differences in background, Wynter becomes thoughtful.

“We don’t check our citizenship at the door just because we’re members of Screen Actors Guild,” she says. “I grew up in a working class town, in a working class family, and starved to become an actor. I worked my ass off. I ate ramen noodles for a year. Just because you become successful and you’ve earned it, doesn’t make us elite.”

“It really illuminates or highlighted what I already know, and that is you’ll really do anything to protect your children,” she says. “I’m a single mother, and I think it just sort of reiterated that you do your best, but sometimes you don’t make the best decisions. But it’s only because you’re trying to protect your children and do the right things by your children.”

Although she appeared in films alongside high-profile actors such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Winona Ryder, Wynter found much of her success in television, appearing as a guest star on Blue Bloods and Californication, in a recurring role on Damages, and on 24 as Kate Warner in what is perhaps her best-known role to date.

Wynter adds that she likes her character because, while she may not always be right, she’s strong in other ways, and the wrong decisions she does make are coming from a good place. “This character evolves the more she learns, and I think it was nice to see her kind of reluctantly go towards the light. The more McBride [Billy Bob’s character] pleads with her, the more he learns, and the more she gives in. And sometimes that’s hard,” she says.

“You’re a film actor, or you did television, or you did stage. But there was not a whole lot of crossover,” Wynter says when reflecting on how she’s seen the industry change over the years. “TV was kind of the third tier for actors.” Maybe it was once, but it’s certainly not anymore. One doesn’t have to look further than shows like Westworld or Fargo to find film actors that have made the journey to the small screen, and for good reason. “I think the writing in television is just so superb and so incredibly varied,” Wynter says. “And frankly, I think there are so many more roles for women. I’ve been doing this for a long time now, and I judged myself when I started doing TV. And now I feel, ‘Wow … I’m so happy to be in this medium.’ These characters are strong, professional, nuanced, layered and fascinating … it’s really just such an incredible world to be in.” An incredible world, but also, a different one. “I think creativity is creativity and good writing is good writing, and that’s what it comes down to. And if it’s a good story and a great character, it really doesn’t matter,” says Wynter, who is the first to acknowledge there’s a distinct difference between working on a network show and working on a streaming show. “It’s a little scary, in that it all gets released at once,” she tells me. “You don’t have to wait week to week to see if people like it or don’t like it, which, as it turns out, was quite nice because you just put it all out there at once. And I think to do it like that, at least from a creative perspective, you’re not writing for the critics. You’re not writing for the blogs. You write in a way that the story deserves.” It was this aspect of the series, combined with the fact that it was being written by mastermind David E. Kelley, which attracted Wynter to her most recent role. “He does amazing roles for women, and there are so many incredible female roles in Goliath. I was very curious to see how he’d do something without the limitations of the network,” she says. “He was able to be freer with content, so that was really interesting and fun for someone known for that network format.”

58

cvlux.com @cv_luxury

It’s that sense of reluctance that Wynter identifies with in real life. “As a lioness, as a mother, you can kind of dig in. And if you’re stubborn and think you’re right all the time, a little bit like me, it’s nice to be reminded that taking advice from other people is important,” she explains. When she’s not acting, Wynter is busy championing personal agendas, such as Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, an organization that she’s deeply involved with. “I feel like I have a sense of responsibility as a citizen and a human,” she says, while being quick to point out that despite the name, the group isn’t just for those who are maternal. “There’s something very powerful about moms, there’s something very powerful about the maternal experience and wanting to protect children and the children of this country. Moms don’t give up, they don’t shut up, and once we get together, we’re an army.” Working on an Amazon show, Wynter is a big fan of practicing what she preaches, which means she binges just as much as everyone else does. “I’m trying to watch The Crown; with three kids, working and trying to manage everything, I don’t get a lot of time that’s not Pippa Pig or Nickelodeon shows,” she admits. “But The Crown, I think that’s an incredibly beautiful jewel of a show. I just find that era fascinating.” Anything else on the docket? “I’ve gotta catch up on The Walking Dead … I still haven’t seen the last few episodes. And I’ve gotta start getting back into Man in the High Castle, and I just binged American Crime,” she tells me. Don’t expect the star (who calls herself a “big fan of binge”) to marathon watch television shows for relaxation, though; the Aussie is often dreaming of a seaside escape. “Lying on the beach … that’s my ultimate dream relaxation, but I don’t get to do it very often,” she admits. “In reality, the way to relax is just taking a shower and not being interrupted by one to three children who all of a sudden need my attention.” There’s a pause, and then Wynter laughs, sliding right back into that positive, good nature that’s become a staple of our conversation. “Good thing I love them to death.”

ECLECTIC MODERN STEPHEN TOMAR AND STUART LAMPERT CREATE A HAVEN FOR ART HIGH ABOVE LOS ANGELES IN THE PRESTIGIOUS TROUSDALE ESTATES

WRITTEN BY MIKE RAGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHARLES S. WHITE INTERIOR DESIGN BY STEPHEN TOMAR AND STUART LAMPERT

TOMAR LAMPERT ASSOCIATES

F

or this Trousdale home Stephen Tomar and Stuart Lampert designed a neutral modern theme as a backdrop to feature the art work that the owner had collected from Europe. They decided on a monochromatic vertical stripe wall covering by Maya Romanoff for the foyer, living room, dining area and corridors. Two custom console tables in black high polish mahogany finish by Stephen Tomar Furniture flank the foyer entry. The spacious living room features two seating areas. The first is focused on the fireplace with a stainless steel surround and rich black lacquered walls which emphasize the art above the fireplace. The second seating area adjacent to the bar overlooks the pool and the view of Los Angeles, the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

Stephen and Stuart consciously designed the room to focus on the view as the most important element of the space. The custom bed with storage, glass and chrome coffee table and ultra unique magazine rack that houses a flat screen television are all conceived and built by Stephen Tomar Furniture.

As a departure from the rest of the design, the designers built a completely new media room with the goal of making the space fun, exciting and comfortable. They selected a Moorish theme and upholstered all of the walls with acoustic sound proofing and concealed surround sound speakers. Prominent in the room is an electronic back-lit piece from the client’s art collection. The 5’ deep custom wall-to-wall seating is layered with multiple patterned pillows in fabrics by Brunschwig & Fils, Duralee and Pindler and Pindler. Large brass round Turkish trays are placed on each of the ottomans to double as coffee tables.

VENICE VIEWS FORM DESIGN STUDIO CREATES A HOME WORTHY OF THEIR CLIENT’S BOLD AND ELEGANT SENSE OF STYLE

WRITTEN BY MIKE RAGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN SMILER INTERIOR DESIGN BY FORM DESIGN STUDIO RAFAEL KALICHSTEIN / JOSHUA ROSE / OPHELIE RENAUDIN

W

hen Form Design studio was engaged for the Carroll Canal project, they were charged with bringing the interior finishes in line with the architecture to reflect the home’s value and the owner’s bold, elegant sense of style. The greatest challenge was the architecture, specifically the first floor living room, which was disconnected from the rest of the house by location, access and a large built-in which blocked the stairs. Form’s Ophelíe Renaudin’s value as

an interior architect was especially crucial in resolving these issues. To accomplish this, the built-in and the pony wall of the loft style dining room above the living room were demolished and a glass railing installed. This opened up the first floor living room and patio to the second story, making it feel spacious and capturing the home’s innate sense of volume. The result is a feeling of connection with the rest of the house in line with the overall architectural vernacular, despite being on different levels.

The scope of the project included complete kitchen, bar, powder room and guest suite renovation. The hardwood floors were all refinished, the entire home painted and motorized window treatments installed throughout. The designers’ favorite room is the Great Room which provided the opportunity to incorporate unbelievable Bianco Lasa Macchia Vecchia marble that they discovered in Italy. Partnered with the spectacular double height ceilings, windows and Form Design Studio’s “Tache” pieces for Left Bank Art, this room makes a clean and dramatic statement.

The owner loves to entertain, especially on her rooftop garden with views of the canals. Integral to the project was expanding and refinishing the ground level patios, refinishing the teak roof decking, and providing new landscaping, outdoor furnishings and soft goods. Form Design Studio took their cues from the best elements of the architecture and worked to create a bespoke space that represents the sophistication embodied by their client through her wardrobe and personal style choices. This project, according to Joshua Rose, asked the design team to honor their favorite design tenet that, “spaces speak: in order for a design to succeed it is imperative the designer listen.

YOUR NEXT CHAPTER STARTS HERE By

KATHY STYPULA FRESNO, CALIFORNIA

W

ith more than two decades of Real Estate Lending experience, I enjoy working with every type of borrower. I spent a fair amount of my career in Southern California. Given the fierce competitive market there, my success demanded I set myself apart from the competition. In doing that, I cultivated a sales strategy that would add value to both my realtor partners as well my homebuyers. As a legacy real estate agent in the early ‘90s, I learned how to navigate even the most challenging of markets. The Central Valley envelopes a wide range of geography, as well as demographics. With this, as an expert lending professional, I must constantly expand my professional knowledge. While money is still very affordable today, I make an effort to compile a financial overview for every borrower, ensuring I have explained to them what their most viable options are for home loans. Creating a client relationship is vital to a successful transaction, as buying a home is one of, if not the, largest financial investments an individual will make in their lifetime.

WHO I AM

1.

MY PASSION I am passionate about life, my babies, my family and my faith. My husband and I love to cook, travel to Mexico with our baby girls, tinker around our home and work on fun projects together. I strive to be equally passionate in all of my roles as a professional, a mom, a friend and a wife.

2.

CAREER-DEFINING PROTOCOL As a loan originator in the Central Valley, I am blessed to call anyone and everyone “My Customer.” I have become a subject matter expert on a variety of loan products; my clientele demands as such. There is not a loan type I can not do! At Bay Equity Home Loans, we value the opportunity to earn your business. As your mortgage loan professional, I will offer you the highest level of service, providing you with mortgage solutions that work for you and your unique financial situation. I welcome the opportunity to service all of your real estate financing needs.

3.

MY GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT My family! While working in Southern California, I met and married my husband, Phil. We had our first child in 2004, and our second child in 2006. Although I loved living and working in Southern California, I didn’t want to raise my family there. My husband and I had roots in Fresno, and we felt compelled to move back home.

4.

WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY PROFESSION I have been blessed with great leaders throughout my professional career, all of which have played a pivotal role in my success. As a Bay Equity Home Loan mortgage lending professional, our team is knowledgeable about a wide range of different loan programs in order to serve your unique needs and financial goals, which is my true professional passion. Whether you’re making a first time purchase or looking to refinance, I can help!

Marble Moment

By Mike Ragan

Millions of years in the making, marble is absolutely unique with veins that flow through it like rivers. Similar to a diamond in the rough, marble in its raw form might resemble a rock, but when sculpted and polished it becomes a beautiful material associated with luxury and prestige. It has been a favorite in art and architecture, from the Acropolis in the ancient times, to Michelangelo to modern homes of today. Marble has long been a mainstay in flooring, tiles and countertops, and now the marble motif is trending, finding its way into wall art, wallcovering, fabrics, furniture, rugs and accessories.
