Mindfulness: Is it the new paradigm in Corporate Culture? by Ken Reed About a month and a half ago I received an email notice announcing the first Mindfulness Leaders Summit to be held in the Washington, D.C., area. Over the next weeks, I visited the site several times trying to look deeper into what it was all about; its mission, goals and who would be presenting. The site announced that more that 500 leaders from 37 countries would be present. Quite honestly, for the most part I did not recognize the vast array of 25 presenters, their backgrounds and books. Having been exposed to many Eastern and Western traditions over 45 years and as a former monk and practitioner, I knew the various lineages, the masters, gurus, and current teachers teaching some form of mindfulness and meditation toward self-discovery and liberation. Clearly, none of these presenters were on the roster or circuits I was aware of. Over my own years as an instructor and meditation guide to many, through my retreats, events and tours, and sharing my books, I was not familiar with what I will call another whole development in the spread of the dharma. These were the guys in suits — “The Suits.” I dug deeper to see what had been the sources of their inspiration, their training to be able to bring this ancient practice of mindfulness to a world-class summit for leaders, leaders who were now taking the ancient instructions into the Fortune 500 arena and government orgs, healthcare and international relations. I was aware of the recent scientific examinations in labs where brain science experts charted the outcomes of mindfulness and meditation on the pre-frontal cortex and how it affected the amygdala in stimulating compassion and empathetic sensitivities. Further, I was aware of the notable claims by sports teams, performers and corporate management here and there employing mindfulness as an overall strategy in the workplace.

I was curious and decided to attend the summit, participate and learn more about this groundbreaking movement. I had a lot of questions. How is mindfulness being presented to those who may have no prior interest, training or background? How are or will they be proposing the use, measurement and effectiveness to orgs that we usually considered to be bottom-line profit driven. And further, had the corporate executive world come to meditation or had practitioners outside the corporate world now penetrated the suits with demonstrated bottom-line value? So I went. I participated. I focused with intensity. And as the summit concluded on Saturday after two days, I reflected on what had taken place and I would like to share a few thoughts. Thoughts? Oh no! Not thoughts. Let’s call them impressions. This was not a dry, academic or intellectual banter gathering. It was heart felt and I had to chuckle at times as I witnessed the suits hugging each other. The sessions were robust and well presented by the likes of: Mark Tercek, CEO of The Nature Conservancy; Rich Fernandez, Mindfulness continued on page 14

Rock ’n’ Roll Soul: Benefit Drumming for Frank Anthony Friends of Frank Anthony and Lake Harriet Spiritual Community (LHSC) are invited to a benefit drumming to support efforts to provide healing to Anthony, who has been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease since October in a Florida hospital. Anthony was musical director for LHSC for a number of years, until he moved to Florida where he continued to support spiritual services led by the Rev. Marshall Wright. “Rock ’N’ Roll Soul: Benefit Drumming for Frank Anthony” will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community, 4401 Upton Ave. S., Minneapolis. Frank was admitted to a hospital on October 18, and he is still struggling through the healing process while breathing with support of a ventilator, being fed through a feeding tube, sporadically obtaining blood transfusions to fight off blood infections, working on gaining his fine motor skills back after being sedated for nearly three weeks, as well as trying to mentally comprehend what he is physically going through. “When awake and with it,” Rev. Wright says, “Frank is excited to know people are thinking of him (especially through music) and he’s very anxious to get the hell out of there!” Donations of any kind are welcomed to help support Anthony and his daughters through the financial burdens of this journey. Those who will not be able to make it to the Benefit drumming and but want to donate can go to the GoFundMe account at www.gofundme.com/frankanthony. The Sani drum will be returned for the benefit event. Frank Anthony was its caretaker for the many years it was housed at LHSC. All are welcome to come and experience this drum under the dome, while at the same time supporting Frank both energetically and financially. Each part of the drum comes from a white pine tree logged in Northern Minnesota. Sani’s skin is a buffalo hide. by Julie McMahon The New Year is a great time to assess where you are at in your life — what seems to be working, and what may not be working so great — and it offers an opportunity to expand, grow, stretch and move more into the life and person you desire to be. It is very tempting to hit January with full steam towards all sorts of new goals and aspirations, but all too often we try to change too many things at once instead of honoring the personal journey we are on. As a holistic health coach and founder of Sound Nutrition, I believe in the power of making smaller changes one step at a time, which result in big changes over time. When looking at your overall health, it is good to consider a variety of factors related to nutrition, exercise, stress management, spiritual practice, relationships, job satisfaction and, in general, where you are at and where you would like to be. As a nutrition educator, I am all about the food and believe that what you put in your mouth daily greatly affects all the other areas of your life. I teach from the perspective of balance and believe that if we give our body the nutrients it needs, it will remain free of cravings, mood swings, hormonal issues, illness and disease that come from imbalance. So how do we achieve this balance in a world that is constantly in motion and where food choices abound? It can be difficult! It seems that every time we turn around, there is a new diet trend or fad that everyone seems to be embracing. Instead of trying the latest fads, diets or counting calories or points, I encourage my clients to eat whole, real foods and to tap into their inner wisdom and intuition to really assess how different foods make them feel. I’m a plant-based, eat-local, ditchthe-packaged-and-processed kind of gal. I am also a busy business owner and mother of five who understands that good food options need to be quick, tasty, nutritious and pass for your more picky family members. Check out Sound Bites monthly for food ideas and recipes that will assist you on your journey to health! Start here with a comforting, warm, simple soup recipe that your body
will love after all the holiday overindulgences. Chickpea Soup with Tomatoes and Greens Ingredients 3 T Olive Oil 1 Onion, chopped 2 Celery Stalks with leaves, stalks diced and leaves chopped 2 Large Garlic Cloves, one smashed and one halved 2 T chopped parsley, plus more for garnish 1 tsp dried oregano 1/4 tsp dried thyme One 15-oz can organic diced tomatoes (look for BPA-free cans) One 15-oz can or 1 1/2 cups cooked chickpeas Sea Salt and Freshly Ground Pepper 4 cups chicken or vegetable stock, or water Several cups torn greens, such as beet greens, chard, or spinach 2 slices gluten free bread Directions In a soup pot, heat the 3 T olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onion, celery and celery leaves, smashed garlic, parsley, oregano and thyme and cook, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Add tomatoes and chickpeas and season with 1 tsp salt. Add stock. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook until the flavors meld and soften, 30 minutes to 1 hour. (The soup can be refrigerated overnight at this point.) Re-warm soup, if necessary, and stir in greens, cooking them until softened and tender. Season to taste. Just before serving, toast the bread. Rub toasts with halved garlic clove, brush with oil, and tear into pieces. Ladle the soup into bowls. Submerge some torn toast pieces in the soup so that they soak up juices and add texture. Garnish with parsley. Eagle & Condor Ceremony unites us all Impressions from event leaders reflect love, service & wisdom; hundreds attend More than 250 people gathered on December 6 to participate in a daylong ceremony that honored the coming together of the Eagle and the Condor, an ancient prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor that arose from many indigenous cultures of the Americas. The prophecy said humanity would split into two paths: the Eagle, representing the mind, the industrial revolution and the masculine; and the Condor, representing the heart, intuition and the feminine. The prophecy said the 1490s would usher in a 500-year period in which the Eagle would become so powerful that it would drive out the Condor, and that is represented in the conquering of the Americas by foreign immigrants and the oppression of the indigenous people. The prophecy continued by saying the next 500-year period would begin following the end of the long-count of the Mayan Calendar — December 21, 2012 — when we would see the Condor and the Eagle come together and fly in the same sky, creating a higher level of consciousness for humanity. Cultures around the world say the Earth is undergoing an intentional evolution of consciousness at this time. The following are statements provided by leaders and participants in the ceremony on the meaning of the event: Jorge Luis Delgado, an Andes Shaman from Peru, Quero Yatiri Heritage Keeper, author of Andean Awakening: an Inca Guide to Mystical Peru — “Taripaypacha: It is the name for this new cycle, which means “Meeting Time.” It also can be interpreted as the time of encounter with oneself, and time of meeting with complementary (like minded), with brothers from all directions. “This feeling and vibration of a complementary unit was experienced in the event. The ceremonies with their protocol gave luster to the presence of the spirit of the condor and the eagle, bringing subtle energies that do not only occur at this time, but activate the spiral of energy that is expanding into a dream of a new world based on the life essence of love, service and wisdom. “In the event we vibrated with the words, ceremonial acts and dances that complete the celebration of life and understanding that we are One, and we all bring a different contribution to the evolution of life. The recall and ceremony of the Prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor strengthens the soul

Drumming and dancing were a part of the Eagle & Condor Ceremony. Speakers Jorge Delgado and Cedric Red Feather found common ground (bottom left). of hope that the ancestors are here. We are protagonists of myth and reality; we are the dancers of the Muyuki, the circle of Infinite Consciousness. We have all felt the blessing of Pacha and the Light of the Cosmic Father, as well as the Light of the Cosmic Mother, since the Eagle and the Condor are their authentic messengers of this New Light on this New Dawn.” Cedric Red Feather, a Turtle Priest of the Mandan Tribe of North Dakota, a Purple Heart combat-wounded Vietnam veteran, an Okipa Maker, member of the Blackmouth Soldier Society and Red Feather Society and author of Mandan Dreams — “Having people from the Ghost Dance at the Eagle and the Condor ceremony meant the most to me. Many of these people were with me for the 2011 Okipa, 11:11:11, 2013 Canopy of Stars, 2014 Ghost Dance, and now, the 2014 Eagle Condor Ceremonies. That has more meaning than anything else. They traveled from Illinois, Missouri and Stillwater to be a part of this. “The Eagle Condor Prophecy pertains to many indigenous peoples of the Americas, from north to south, passed on through medicine people and shamans with some variations but basically the same essence.
After 500 years, it’s fulfilled. The Eagle Condor is one of 14 Prophecies of the Nueta (Mandan) people. As Mandan Turtle Priests, we know the origins of where we came. Fulfillment of the Prophecies is what the weekend meant to me. “Personally, I was not interested in entertaining or making money. I am not a performer. This is the first ceremony I’ve done with publicity. The other ceremonies mentioned above we did without publicity. This event was different. It was necessary to do the Eagle Condor in public because it involves many indigenous people. Mary Laven with the Wind over Fire Healing Center did a great job of bringing people together as a bridge. “I have a select few people I like to work with, and they are people who have no judgments, and who do not criticize other people. We’re not here to change people. I’m really grateful for Lizi Hammond, whose Spirit Name is First Pretty Woman. She was so energized in preparing for the ceremony and gathering her regalia. I’m grateful to Janet Red Feather for contributing the Eagle Songs. Janet invited a student of hers, Trista Wyatt, who is Lakota, who experienced her first chance to have a role in a ceremony of Eagle Condor continued on page 14

O p e n i n g o f the H ea r t of self-acceptance. This is your next step, looking within. This is an important aspect of your enlightenment process, to move into a place of self-acceptance, self-love.
A Pleiadian MESSAGE
by Christine Day Beloved ones, we greet you! As you have moved into to the New Year, veils have lifted and your planet Earth has begun a rapid transformation. For the very first time in the history of planet Earth, there are a series of illumination waves flowing onto your planet carrying a specific pure frequency of light, of love, designed to accelerate your awakening. This transformational energy is designed to realign you through your heart. This energy works through the heart’s energetic field and anchors through the cells of your heart, creating a dimensional opening for you to re-access a doorway to your natural state of being. This dimensional opening of the heart will give you the ability to re-access sacred alliances that are a part of your destiny, a destiny of your heart, which carries the light frequency for you of coming home, fulfilling a sacred promise to you. Your heart’s desire
Reconnection to these sacred alliances is part of your heart’s desire and can be likened to opening like a flower to the sun. You know how naturally a flower opens to the sun, expanding its petals outwards, fully receiving the light. The sun, being your own unique divine light of your higher self, is re-anchoring through the cells of your heart. This is what you must do now — no holding back. Just let go and receive this natural blessing that is being given to you within the sacred energies carried to you within these illumination waves. This illumination frequency will allow you a natural reconnection to Truth, clarity and knowledge, bringing you into an understanding and clarity of your own destiny right now in your life. It is the time to claim what is rightfully yours! This new life force energy carried within the Illumination waves creates this acceleration within you for your awakening. It is important that you begin to consciously open into this energetic flow that is being created through the action of these illumination waves. Your sacred process
You are going to be able to work consciously with this energy in a simple form. Hold your heart with the palms of your hands. Bring your awareness to the pressure, warmth of your hand on your heart space. Now take a “life force” breath, like a soft wind, and place your breath into that 12 www.edgemagazine.net
Self-acceptance
Reflection on this Pleiadian symbol helps support your personal transformation. space you are holding and let go. Then bring this sacred sound, INDAH, into the space and let go. Know that your unique frequency of this sound, INDAH, will begin to align you to the light frequency held within the illumination waves. Each time you use this sound you will be aligned deeper into this expanded light frequency held within the waves. This is your sacred process that has been given to you for this time. Know we hold you as you, through conscious choice, work within the illuminated light. Intense emotions
There is an accelerated dynamic that will be played out within this energetic flow which will create a changing element, an essence to unfold within the dimensional setting on your Earth plane. This energetic will result in a magnification of the human drama on a third-dimensional level. This means that there will be an intensification of emotion coming up within you, which is created from the illumination light that is coming into your body. The denser emotions in the body will begin to vibrate and rise within you. These are emotions that you have not been able to process or deal with in the past that will begin to surface. This process is part of a sacred design, to move you into a process of looking inward — so that you begin to understand the vulnerabilities of your humanness, holding yourself with love and compassion. Now is the time to begin to honor your unique human qualities — all of them, the vulnerable parts of your self and all of your idiosyncrasies. Now is the time for you to hold your self with love and compassion for all that you have been through in this lifetime as a human being, accepting all parts of your self. Now is the time to move into a place
Remember: as a human being you are “perfectly imperfect.” It’s important that you move step by step, moment by moment, holding your self with acceptance just for one moment at a time. As you move into moments of self-acceptance, every cell in your body transforms, carrying that self love energy within. Each moment you hold your self in this way, your whole body can transform/self-heal. It is essential with this level of transformational light coming onto your planet that you “let go” of any holding on to your past. You can utilize these waves of energy by just letting go and surfing the waves of illumination that are coming onto your planet. Allow yourself to be carried effortlessly into the multi-dimensional light source connections. When you do this, you are like a magnet realigning to your natural light source flow. In this New Year. you have begun to go through a rapid transformation through the physical cells of your body and through your energetic field. Embracing your cellular change is essential at this time — by bringing your awareness into the cells of your body and using your “life force” breath, like a wind, into your cells. You move naturally into a further acceleration of your awakening. You do need to let go of the need to understand. Your “need to understand” holds you back in your awakening process. Your human “need to understand” is controlled by the ego mind. So let go into “not knowing” and just hold your heart space, being with what is right in front of you in this moment of time. Breathe and just Be. Let go and just Be. Hold this precious moment and feel you, feel your heart. Waves of light
This is just the beginning of your magical times here on the Earth plane. Know you can expect these waves of transformational illumination light to continue throughout January 2015, moving you to your next step by bringing a continued expanded dimensional frequency of love to you, to your Earth plane. Hold your heart and feel the truth of what we say within the cells of your heart. You can trust your heart and your ongoing commitment to self. Your intention for your Pleiadians continued on page 14

co-founder of Wisdom Labs and former Director of Executive Development at Google; Congressman Tim Ryan; and others. In the breaks and lunch period, I mingled and met so many leaders and learned that they were from diverse backgrounds. I met people from healthcare, education, FBI, State Department, World Bank, a psychologist and those whose only credential was that they sit in silence practicing mindfulness. One question that arose often in my conversations with long-time practitioners was whether the whole movement would tend to water down the ancient teachings from the East into nice accessible and palatable packages to be sold by corporate mindfulness coaches. These days there is a high visibility of an industry that has grown around body, mind and spirit awareness. Yoga studios have appeared in every city. Fitness studios, hotels and spas offer it with exercise; cruise lines have classes, and even one airport I passed through recently had a time out room for sitting. There are 200-hour teacher training events offered with certification. Was and is this the yoga of the masters, Patanjali, the mindfulness taught by the Buddha, or is this just part of the evolution of consciousness raising predicted by the likes of Paramahansa Yogananda and earlier Eastern teachers visiting the West many years ago? What difference does it make? Who is to say how this conscious revolution is evolving or what is going to take place? This was the question we posed to ourselves. As those of us who attended departed from the Artisphere convention center where all had taken place, I knew we all had the same question. I knew as I said goodbye with a big hug to the founders of The Mindful Leadership Summit, Mo Edjlali and Eric Forbis, that we would return again next year to meet and to reveal the effects of a most powerful experience. Thank you to all who had the vision to make this possible. a

Gina Miranda Kingsley, a Mayan Time Keeper, an expert on the Mayan Calendar whose family origin were the Mayans in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala — “One of the main principles taught by the ancient Mayan philosophy is that life is a never-ending journey of understanding and learning, of reconnecting to our origin and an everlasting quest for enlightenment. Using this as a basis to recap, the event on December 6 was a step in the right direction. According to the Mayan calendar, I already had been warned of some important happening on that date. So when Mary Laven contacted me before that, and disclosed the date she had chosen, I knew it was going to be something special. “In Mayan calendar account, the new era of enlightenment already began in 2013 and we now navigated the second year of the new era. In a few years we will be at the threshold of the “next sun.” Many of us can already feel these changes. Jose Arguelles wrote of the prophecy that at the beginning of the new era, the southern and northern hemispheres will meet each other; the spirit of the Eagle/ Condor Prophecy Awakening implies this encounter. “It was no coincidence that a few months ago the Aztec dance group Huitzilin contacted me for spiritual guidance. And, without Mary Laven knowing this, she asked me if I knew an Aztec ceremonial dance group (these harmonies of synchronization still surprise me at times). So, I spoke to the Group counsel and encouraged them to participate. It was the first time this group appeared in public, and their ceremonial dances were outstanding! “My granddaughters participated in my ceremony and are a mix of Inca and Mayan blood, and they were born in Minnesota. That for me is the energetic vortex that connects all elements
to support you in your transition. You are not alone. Each one of you can reach out with your conscious awareness and call the help forward. Part of your destiny right now is to work step by step with sacred alliances so that you can move forward successfully in your mission on planet earth now. We await your call! Blessings, The Pleiadians a
of the material and spiritual worlds at the moment. “The event was a symbolic encounter remarking the connection that already has been in the works. The spirituality shared from many points of origin was expressed; the meeting of colleagues like Cedric Red Feather and Jorge Delgado was unforgettable. I hope we can collaborate in the future in the quest for divinity. “Thanks to the organizer, participants and audience, may the spark from the event ignite significant changes for us all, changes that eventually will bring us to change the future of humanity and the planet.” Susan Langston, part of the group that performed the Mapuche healing ceremony called the Machitun — “The Mapuche are the indigenous people of southern Chile. I, along with many others in the Twin Cities, were taught and trained by Chilean Medicine woman, Luzclara. She was initiated into these traditions by Mapuche women who were shamans, called Machis. These Machis gave permission for the traditions and this specific ceremony to be shared with others outside of their community. “The Machitun conducted at the Eagle and Condor event was very powerful. With close to 150 participants receiving the healing, it was the largest Machitun ever performed in the Midwest. During this ceremony, specific drums called kultrungs are used in varying drumbeats to summon the healing spirits. Rattles are also used to sweep negative energies from those being healed. “I think one of the reasons this Machitun was so powerful was because the energy had been building all day through various ceremonies of gratitude and honoring. There was a spiritual charge that filled the room and everyone in it. In honoring the prophesy of Eagle and Condor Medicine coming together, the Spirits blessed the recipients with healing. It was an honor to be asked to join this event and coordinate the Machitun.” a

Dawning of a Business Intuitive An Interview with Amber Annette
by Tim Miejan Amber Annette, a wife and mother of four who possesses an uncanny ability to shed light on how to move forward in business and discover entrepreneurial opportunities, is one of the most dynamic intuitives to blossom in the Twin Cities. She arrived in full view of The Edge magazine with a single phone call, telling us that she wanted to help us — and all of the businesses that our publication supports in the Upper Midwest. She quickly got to work. An hour-long meeting to “soulstorm,” rather than brainstorm, new avenues for The Edge became a three-hour session. Her inspiration led us to schedule the launch of The Edge Business Network, a monthly networking gathering for all Edge advertisers, on January 7, and the first Wednesday of each month thereafter. Amber will host the events and offer support for participants who are seeking new ways to promote their practices and better market their approaches. She also will host the free podcast “Edge Intuitive Business Guidance” from 5-6 p.m. on the first Monday of each month (debut on January 5 at Blogtalkradio.com/ edgemagazine or 714.364.4750) in which she will give channeled messages to callers on “new ways to kick start your soul and ignite your business.” Amber’s personal business, Your Intuitive CEO, makes use of her 15 years of experience in financial management, business strategy and public speaking by helping business owners and entrepreneurs tap the greater potential that exists within each of them. She offers a vision on client growth and retention, sales, marketing, advertising, business and office management, employee relations and much more. “I am not a coach,” she says. “I am not a consultant. I am a results creator. That means I come in, get you to your goal, and give you all of the tools you need for you and your business to thrive.” All this from someone who always wanted to be an actress. “I always saw myself on a stage, as far back as I can possibly remember,” Amber says. “So every time I do a group reading I feel like that’s the stage that I was envisioning. I’ve always seen it, my entire life.” The Alexandria, MN, native took time out of her always-busy schedule to speak with The Edge about her gifts of mediumship and intuition and her desire to help others awaken to the gifts they all have within. 16 www.edgemagazine.net
What led to the launch of your business, Your Intuitive CEO? AA: I started realizing that a lot of the people
Amber Annette supports the success of your business. Let’s start at the beginning. What is your earliest memory of what could be considered a metaphysical experience? Did you have any as a child? Amber Annette: Yes. When I was so little it
was so scary. It was very scary. It was always just activity in my bedroom. I can remember being 4 or 5 years old, and I saw what I thought were ghosts. I never use that word anymore. What I thought were ghosts in my room were actually just angels or Spirit — whatever label you want to put on it. But I was just terrified. I fought with my parents for so long, because I was so scared. We were Catholic, and when my mom asked me about it, she ended up making me go see a priest. It was really traumatic, not a pleasant experience based on the Catholicism in our family. I don’t really remember anything later, including when I had my first two children, but Spirit came through strongly with my two youngest ones. In August 2007, I had a baby and within a couple weeks of him being born, his late grandfather, my husband’s dad, stepped forward. Again, I was very scared of it. I didn’t understand. I have always been brave, but this was really scary to me. When I had my youngest son in December 2013, Spirit came through again a couple weeks after he was born. This time, I just told myself, “I’m not going to be scared of it this time. This is happening for a reason.”
coming to me were entrepreneurs who were not quite sure where they were headed with the business that they had or what they should be doing or shouldn’t be doing career-wise. It wasn’t just people looking to connect with a past loved one. These people were looking to connect on a soul level with what they should really be doing in their professions, and I started seeing that the information coming through me from Spirit was just really spot on. It really resonated with my clients. Then it just kind of hit me. I have the ability to take my 15 years of business experience and combine it with my mediumship to give these tailored, detailed instructions to people on how to either grow their business or start a business, or just figure out who they are and what they are going to be when they grow up. Maybe it’s even just encouraging them to go a new direction and to look at something they have never looked at before. Every session is truly unique. A woman I met with today had a business but she doesn’t really know where to go next. By the end of our session, we had created almost a whole new brand, a whole new image for her, a whole new business for her combining a few things about who she is, what she is all about and the work that she has done in the past. When we finished, she was in tears because she was so excited to get started and get going. That’s why I really like to think of what I do as a soulstorming session instead of a brainstorming session. We are really soulstorming to figure out: Where are you headed? Where should you be headed? What is the right path for you? What is going to make you get out of bed every day and jump up to do the work that you came here to do? Are you connecting with the soul’s passion of what your clients came here to do? AA: I am going to say yes to that. I think
it is also what’s going to lead them to that direction. Sometimes people just need to be inspired. Sometimes people need to have that fire lit underneath them, and I feel like I am the fuel for that. I get them excited to either do something new or find a way to bring new vibrancy and new color to what they are already doing. Sometimes it’s a matter of getting their soul aligned with what they should be doing. It’s easy to get off track. sometimes.
I don’t have to come in and spend a lot of time. I look at the obstacles and the barriers to getting where someone needs to be. All I have to see is what is out there for your highest good, what’s out there for the highest good of your business, and then I just tap into Spirit and say, “How can we go get that together for you?” Do you still work as an intuitive and medium helping individuals connect with people who have passed over? AA: Yes. About 50 percent of
my time is spent either working with an individual or doing group/private party readings, and then about 50 percent of my time is spent doing intuitive business guidance. Did you ever imagine that you would be where you are at this moment? AA: Absolutely not (laughing).
I’ve always had the spirit of an entrepreneur. I have a hard time sitting inside a box that somebody tells me I need to sit in. I don’t just think outside the box. I don’t want to be in the box at all. I have my own ideas and I’ve always just wanted to figure out how I was going to do it for myself and make my own hours and make my own rules. Now that I’m doing it, I feel very blessed. I have never been so happy in my entire life. I don’t think I have ever been such a good wife, and naturally, I am a better mom because of it. I like to have my hands in everything with everyone. I tend to thrive in chaos, and our family life is pretty chaotic, so luckily it’s working so far. My husband is super supportive. He is a great dad and husband, so I am lucky to have his help and support.
What is a single piece of advice you could offer small business owners who are struggling to succeed. AA: Don’t shut down. Reach
out to like-minded businesses. Reach out to friends and family. The more you generate awareness about who you are, the better. Find a networking group or support group. Find that original fire within you that you had when you started
your business. Get back in touch with that and if you can’t find it, there are people like me — coaches and consultants — who can help you find that passion again. Since coming on board as an intuitive advisor to the Edge you sparked several new projects that are planned for 2015 including the Edge Business Network. What was the intention behind this event and what do you hope it will provide Edge advertisers? AA: A lot of small businesses
are facing the same challenges: How do I attract new clients? How do I receive new clients? Where should I be spending my marketing and advertising dollars? How do I create new referrals? Business owners don’t have a lot of time to do marketing activities, so the idea behind The Edge Business Network group is to have a designated place once a month where you can go and be with your peers and create new relationships and new referral opportunities, as well as get other ideas on how to overcome those challenges that most entrepreneurs face on a day-to-day basis. You will be hosting your own podcast on January 5 as a part of Edge Talk Radio. What do you plan to offer listeners? AA: The first part of the podcast
will be a little bit about what’s going on in the small-business environment and I’ll be offering some tips and tricks and different ideas that Spirit provides in general for all business, for all listeners. The last half of the show will be open for entrepreneurs and small business owners to call in for career advice and guidance around business. I will offer an on-air reading to those interested in it. a

January horoscope: Know thyself to wait until mid-February to make an agreement, and if you’d like to start a business together, wait until mid-April.
Lunar Adventures
by Kathie Anderson Even though the travelers Jupiter and Mercury retrace their steps, this month, as determined Saturn is just setting out on his slow journey through the seeking sign of Sagittarius, they are all headed in the same direction: to selfknowledge. “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” — Aristotle Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…You feel the urge to rebel when you experience a confrontation with a boss or parent. Freedom and independence are what you desire. The resolution, however, lies in relationship. So, muster up the courage to talk about the issue with the other person. It’s possible to be yourself within relationship, especially as a leader or teacher of a group. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…It’s going to be a stressful Full Moon, so buy some sweet smelling flowers, prepare a savory meal or snuggle under a soft blanket with a good book. Feed your soul with what you value to support your health. The New Moon, however, may provide you with the opportunity for indirect financial compensation, which should give you peace of mind. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…A deep, dark secret may be revealed. Take time out to get back in touch with your personal integrity and conscious purpose. This is a good time to restore a creative project or pick up an old hobby. At the New Moon, revisit a faraway place to reconnect with an old friend, but purchase your airline ticket at the beginning of the month. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…You will feel extra sensitive to this Full Moon. Retreating into your home and being in solitude provides you with the balance and protection you need from the intense energies of the world and a powerful partner. Get grounded, because you and a partner are about to take your relationship to a deeper level. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Get serious about your creativity, and develop your skills. The Full Moon

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)...Out of all the signs, it is most important for you to focus on knowing thyself. Responsibilities, especially those attached to property, money or physical possessions, seem to proliferate, and your life is one long schedule of things to be done. A battle of beliefs is taking place, so this is a good time to explore philosophies. Your friends are your allies.
illuminates creative blocks that prevent you from expressing yourself. It’s a state of mind, and the Full Moon challenges your belief system. Enroll in that art class that you’ve been dreaming of, and unleash your creativity. Opportunities come from being with other creative minds. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)...Building a new foundation will help you in all creative extensions of your life, i.e., offering your skills to the world, having a baby or meeting that special someone. Letting go of the past is hard to do, but it will create space for something new to come into your life. Believe in yourself, and put yourself out there on a daily basis. Practice makes perfect, right? Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)...Developing the way you communicate will help you to relate to others better, especially with your family. Use an emotional event with a parental figure to learn more about yourself. Try to view the event from your Higher Self. A sibling may be able to help you with this process. You have the opportunity to express yourself in a different way. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)...The bright rays of the Full Moon penetrate the deep, dark recesses of your mind to expose a treasure hidden in the shadows. A financial opportunity could come from partnering with your sibling or another family member, but reflect on it, first. It would be best
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)...A power struggle over money occurs with your partner at the Full Moon. You are forced to look into the darkness. The good news is that you can resolve past karma, and transcend your limitations. So, step into your power and responsibilities. The solution lies in your work and career. Keep your eye out for an income opportunity at the New Moon. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)...You’re probably feeling like a big fish in a small pond. Well, this is your time to “be the change you wish to see in the world.” It’s time to join a group where you can express your unique Self and think collectively with others to create social change. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)...Saturn would like to help you manifest your dreams in the world. You may wonder how it’s possible to earn money doing what you enjoy, but it is possible. Stay grounded — meditate and have faith — and dive into the unknown. Saturn will help you to channel your creative energies. a Kathie Anderson, M.A., C.C.H.T., R.M.T., is a healer and a writer who guides others to reach their highest potential through her private practice, Lunar Adventures. January Yoga: Cat & Cow poses Yoga for YOU
by Michelle Ploog To warm up for 2015, let’s look at the poses Cat and Cow (Marjaryasana & Bitilasana). These stretches are often paired with breathing to compliment their action. Together the two poses warm up the muscles of the back and core to prepare for more movement. The New Year brings the idea of fresh opportunities to make changes. It’s as if we’ve been given a new, blank canvas to create our lives on. The problem? Most of us are so set in our old ways that it is impossible to create lasting changes on a fresh canvas of life. Here’s the deal: If we are 100 percent committed to our stories and believe that “We are how we are” and “The world is how it is,” then we don’t have the space to create something different. The fact that you are reading this article tells me that you are probably already familiar with the idea that our thoughts are the starting point for creation of our lives. This is no secret to us. We get it, and yet many times we don’t use this information to empower ourselves to create the changes we most desire. The practice of meditation and yoga allows me to clear out the superfluous mind junk to listen for strong-held beliefs that may be holding back the radical changes I need to make to live into my highest potential. Once I can see the belief that is holding back my change potential,
Cow Pose - Bitilasana
I can take away its power in my subconscious mind. This is big work — and I acknowledge you for doing it. So let’s dive into a basic yoga self-transformation exercise with cat & cow. Grab a pen and paper. Take a moment to write down what you are truly ready to change in your life. Ask the question, “What do I need to know in order to make this change?” Then come onto your hands and knees in “table top” and close your eyes. As you inhale, arch your spine taking your chest, chin, and butt up. As you exhale, round your spine tucking your chin and tail while you press your mid-back up. Continue to follow your breath while you arch and round your spine. Clear your space and listen. Once you feel complete, stop. Sit up. Take a breath. Write down your answer. Close your eyes and repeat the mantra: “I am ready to change.” Namasté. a Michelle Ploog is an ERYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher) certified in Kripalu Yoga and Baptiste Power Yoga, which inspires students to live a life of passion and purpose. TIPS FOR LIVING FROM YOUR HEART SPACE EVERY DAY by Shirley Moore It has been my experience that my heart energy continues to expand even though I think I can never experience anything grander. It always surprises me in the best possible way. I have learned how to encourage my heart awareness using a variety of techniques that I intend to share with you. First, I connect with Angels and Masters for additional assistance in achieving my goal. Then I clearly define my Intention and take steps to place my Attention on it as frequently as possible. This is when Action is necessary to complete the process. Here is a process to consider: Connect — Connect with angels and guides that are familiar to you and ask them to assist you in opening your heart. I really like to call upon the feminine Masters, although not exclusively, for this task. I generally call in Quan Yin, Mother Mary, Lady Nada and any of the saints and sages of the ages who would have a particular interest in this project. Intention — Then I ask to let go of any unresolved issues. This may mean you need to pursue some forgiveness or simply accept others and yourself in this moment. This allows me to set my intention to open my heart to accepting myself and others. Attention — I then place my attention as often as possible on what I am attempting to bring into my awareness. So often during
rhythm dance: the voice of the heart by Debbie Lynn What is that little tug, the subtle or not so subtle voice from within? Some call it intuition, some call them divine messages, some call it sensibility — I suppose It really doesn’t matter what you call it…just call it in. Acknowledge your knowing — We are our own worst enemy when it comes to listening and taking our own advice. Ironically, we are the ones who know our self better than anyone — but far too often, we question or dismiss what the heart is telling us. If we can just get past the ego/mind (that is always to the contrary) and stop second-guessing the “right thing,” then Life flows. It is a matter of trust — At the very core of our being is the heart center. It drives us, keeps us alive and guides the wheel of emotion. We all understand this — and yet it is quite a phenomenon. It is a brilliant source of love and energy, wisdom and grace, so how dare we (you and I) not trust what we feel and know. Enter the ego — the part of the psyche that is afraid we just might be wrong. We have to gather 20 www.edgemagazine.net
the day I can get caught up in other things, but I have put things in place to remind myself as I move along to focus on my Intention. Upon awakening, I preview my day and note where I might be able to further my intention. I put a card on the mirror or in my shoe or on the dashboard of my car to remind me. I wear a ring on a finger that is unaccustomed to one or put a ribbon or rubber band on my wrist. I change my password for the month or keep a checklist for every time I remember what I am focusing on until I have the pattern established. When I am at home, I set a timer and see if I am still in my Heart Space when it goes off. At night, I review all the times I was able to stay in the space I desired. Action — To live from my Heart Space, I take a deep breath and focus on opening my heart. As I exhale I send that energy out wherever I am or I send it remotely to those people or situations I am thinking about. You get the idea. Pick one or two strategies that feel comfortable to you and fit your lifestyle. Gradually expand on them and customize them for yourself. Eventually this will run as a background program so that you can comfortably move through your day while sending out Heart-based energy whenever you connect with anyone or think of them. a Shirley Moore is a hypnotherapist, intuitive and spiritual coach based in White Bear Lake, MN. our senses and get over it. (I have found more often than not, “wrong” happened the moment I went against my heart.) The words we hear and the feelings we have, “the knowing,” is always right-on, but we sabotage it, manipulate it and then we create problems. If we just listen, listen well, everything crystallizes; and as we begin to hear more clearly…our confidence will grow. It is a process of daily practice. Ridding out the toxicity — In practice, we get better at receiving and you will notice new clarity. There is little or no interest in the dirt (the drama) and it will simply die out. (Drama is the poison that blocks the passage to the heart and makes it difficult to hear.) Getting rid of the mental/physical garbage allows purer thoughts to permeate. The heart makes more room for the things your soul needs by holding vigil for deeper compassion and understanding. Your body feels lighter, because it is. Long and short of it: your health depends on your heart. Keep it clean. Make your own music — The rhythm of our nature is the sustainable beat of our knowing. It is the universal song and we are a part of it. When the heart is singing we are unstoppable. You know what it feels like, the staccato sound of everyday living, a quiet melody that serenades us to sleep. Our internal song and the heart is leading the way. We all have this amazing beat unique
to us and this energy is connected to everything. If that doesn’t inspire, I don’t know what will. * This is a good place to insert a little thank you. Emotion is different than being emotional — Lastly, it is important to befriend our emotion (get to know it well), and the heart is the direct connection. Remember, it doesn’t have the capacity to dwell in emotional spaces (as I said earlier… there just isn’t room.) We must honor our feelings when they rise, but we don’t have to react in them. Don’t get it twisted. Living from the heart is utilizing the power it holds for surrender, serenity and peace — not reacting to the ego/pride, or ego-driven emotional outbursts that some will argue as passion. Simply put, it isn’t. Our heart is the mainstay, the fire within, the machine that pumps our lifeblood and controls our everything. Honor it, heed the voice and when you get the call, it is a good idea to answer. There is always something to glean (good, bad or indifferent), and learning to trust what we hear naturally seeps into our daily life for betterment. a Debbie Lynn is an artist, writer and owner on Facebook of 360 degrees of inspiration (full circle) and twisted 360. QUIET MIND, OPEN HEART by Mindy Schulke In American society, living from the heart is unconventional. Why? Because our society fosters qualities that overshadow the heart, qualities such as academic knowledge, individual achievement, defeating the competition, and amassment of money and material goods. These revered American qualities require vigilant, perpetual thought. Vigilant, perpetual thought keeps the mind very busy. All this mind-noise drowns out the messages coming from the energy system of the heart. If you can quiet your mind, a richer and easier way of living, powered by pure love, emerges from your heart. To live from a place of pure love, you will need some new skills, otherwise your mind will shut your heart down in a flash. For instance, if you witness poverty from a state of pure love, you may give your stuff away — and you’ll cause the conditioned mind to flare up, “Don’t give that away, we need it to survive.” When you begin a relationship, your mind might promote these thoughts, “Don’t be vulnerable, they’ll just hurt you eventually.” So, how can you live an open-hearted life without interference from the mind? The answer cannot be obtained through knowledge alone, such as the knowledge gained by reading this article. Instead, the answer must be experientially learned by your body. First, you must gain control over the noise in your head. Any of the following mind-quieting activities can be done for seconds, minutes or hours: Visualize your brain engulfed in a vast, dark emptiness inside your skull as if your brain is floating in deep, dark, outer space. Close your eyes but focus their gaze in-between your eyebrows. Then imagine a shift in your mind’s energy to the upper, frontal part of your brain. Stay with this concentrated focus on the upper, frontal brain. If a thought enters your mind, imagine it floating away. Mentally repeat one single word. Use any word you admire. I like “merge,” which can hint of so many things: a merging of the heart and mind, a merging with another human, a merging of one belief system with another. You could use “yam” (pronounced YAHM), the Sanskrit Bija Mantra for the heart chakra. Set your mind single-pointedly on studying a flower. Study the curve of each petal, a dew drop pooling on a petal, the intricacy of a stamen, etc. Quiet Mind continued on page 22

Quiet Mind continued from page 21 In addition to the quick tips above, yoga, meditation, centering prayer and hypnosis all quiet the mind. Secondly, open your heart with these experiential activities: Practice the yoga pose “Camel,” a beautiful heart-opener. In the beginning, you may feel vulnerable, nauseous or fearful. When you start to feel discomfort (but not pain), stay with the pose: this is when the real transformation begins. Love your life unconditionally. How? Close your eyes, focus them between your brows, and repeat this centering prayer directed at a Spiritual Guide or the Universe in general, “Please, give me the grace to fully love this life of mine.” Forgive yourself for mistakes with desensitization. Think of a “mistake” that haunts you. Mentally state the mistake and then add “so what!” to the end of the story. A perceived mistake that took only a flash of time does not define your entire existence. Don’t let anything in the past ruin another single moment of your beautiful life. Forgive others. If you cannot stop yourself from making mistakes, how can you expect others to avoid them? They feel emotions about their mistakes just like you feel about your mistakes. Close your eyes and contemplate how the mistakes of others make you just like them. Once your mind is quiet and your heart is open, a deep intuition arises. Intuition allows you to make quick, awesome decisions without mulling over reams of thoughts — thoughts that eventually invite doubt, worry, the quest for more knowledge, and the resulting perpetuation of mind-noise. Intuition emerges from a new-found love for living. Life becomes effortless and magical. Relationships are free of mind-made concepts and expectations. You project love. You attract love. You are love. This is how we change the world, by each of us quieting our mind and opening our heart. a Mindy Schulke is the organizer of a monthly spiritual meet-up group. LISTENING TO LOVE: TIPS FROM THE HEART by Lisa Venable An excerpt from the book God for President: A Parable about the Power of Love I bring to you now two tips on listening to love, from the heart: • Tip 1: The Heart Seeks to Understand — The ability to look from the heart and see things as they are is the true foundation of Love. Ideas of right, wrong, good and bad are based in fear and shut a door to Love-based living. In the world of fear and ego, punishment is the answer to all negative or unpleasant behavior. The ego’s voice of Fear shouts, “They deserve to be punished or, if we punish them they will change.” Instead of seeking to understand, the ego needs to shame. But the heart knows that an eye for an eye never heals anyone and only creates a continuous pattern of negativity. Love creates an opening for real change. Fear is after revenge so you can feel justified. Love is after understanding so you can heal hearts. When you seek to understand, your heart opens and Fear no longer has control. You feel loving and others feel loved, and from there, anything is possible. Make it a practice to be curious about another’s worldview. If you have differing perspectives, seek to understand rather than be understood. Listen instead of needing to prove someone wrong. When people feel wronged or hurt in some way, they often lash out. And, lashing back at them does not change the pain; it only perpetuates a cycle of more pain and conflict. Here is a powerful question that will help you live from your heart: “What would Love say?” Some possible answers: I seek to understand myself and others. I wonder what they think? What do they feel? If I show others and myself love, we all heal and change. HEART PRACTICE: Next time you have a conflict with someone, drop down to your heart. Seek to understand the other person’s reality and ask questions until you garner a better idea of where they are coming from. If they will not talk about it, take some time in meditation and send the person love. Even if you do not know specifically what is underneath a negative action, you can be sure fear is the culprit and, understanding always soothes Fear. • Tip 2: The Heart Allows for All Possibilities — In many of our personal and political communications, we tend to debate one another versus engaging in effective conversations. Debate perpetuates conflict and polarization while conversations birth possibility. Conflict increases when we focus on right and wrong ideas and become
inflamed when others don’t seek to understand or accept our views. This makes for poor relationships and less effective policy making. While fear shouts, “My way is the only way,” Love whispers, “There are many ways; what’s possible?” To choose love, you need to move beyond right or wrong ideas and look at all possibilities through meaningful conversations. Instead of focusing on your way, try seeing what is true for another. What does the issue or situation look like in their world? What is the gift in their viewpoint? What’s possible? What solution or strategy might be feasible in the middle that you both cannot yet see? Maybe a third possibility could emerge if you got out of the way and truly listened and honored another. Remember, fear needs you to prove you are right so you will feel okay, but Love declares you are okay no matter what. You need prove nothing to Love. What would Love say? My way is not the only way. It’s just a way. I don’t need to be right to be okay. I am okay. How do you see it? What’s possible here? HEART PRACTICE: Seek out someone you know whom you disagree with politically on one or more issues. See if he/she would be willing to have a conversation to look for possibilities beyond each of your viewpoints. Start by listening quietly to the other person with the intent to understand and consider their views. Do not interrupt. Then switch. After the listening process, explore possibilities beyond each of your perspectives. See what might be in the middle. a Lisa Venable, M.A., is an author, inspirational speaker and spiritual healer. Her psycho-spiritual program & workbook, “What Would Love Say: Learning to Listen to Your Heart,” guides people to make the shift from ego to heart-based thinking. Lisa has led workshops for over 20 years in the U.S. and abroad. and SHE is the author of the spiritual novel, God for President: A Parable about the Power of Love. RESIDENCE IN THE HEART Spirit Leaves
by Janet Michele Red Feather When we first feel romantic attraction, a resonant pulse like the beating of wings flutters over the chest. When someone insults us, a stinging flood surges through the heart. Intense emotions throw us for a loop — they take away our sense of control. No wonder we often want to escape the heart and live in the mind. Why do we not, instead, find the courage to remain in the heart, our true core? After many winters, I recognize that living in the heart affords a full and authentic existence. I began as a loving, shy, compassionate child. I was tall, with liquid brown eyes and an adult’s mind. A girl in my sixth-grade class carried a portable typewriter to school each morning. She lived directly across from the school in a brick row home. Still, there was a long sidewalk and large schoolyard to traverse, and the diminutive girl struggled to bear her cargo’s weight over the distance. Joyce was short, so the box with the brass closure nearly brushed the ground. I watched as she shifted the weight of the cumbersome object from hand to hand, sighing heavily. One morning I said to her, “I’ll carry your typewriter. I’m tall.” Reluctantly, she handed it over. She hardly spoke a word after that as I greeted her and carried her typewriter each morning. After two weeks, I went to pick her up and extended my hand to receive her burden, but this time, she said sternly, “No. I’ll carry it myself. Wendy said you’re stupid to carry my typewriter.” Wendy was the most popular girl in the sixth grade. Previously full of good intentions, I felt saddened and ashamed. My heart was broken. I nevertheless proceeded through the next several decades of life in a similar
manner, kind to others because it was natural for me to do so. I wasn’t acting from some principle or demonstrating random acts of kindness: I lived from the heart, which always knew the right path. My sophomore year in college, I fell in with a group of rather dark, brooding and brilliant artists. I quickly learned to hone the qualities of arrogance and shrewdness. I was initiated into an elite circle of “A” students. The English professors doted on us; we were literary aficionados who fed their passion for teaching. We wrote brilliant papers, shared music and poetry. Now notorious, I excelled in literature, art and theatre. I played Feste the Clown in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. I was high on my own persona. Two failed marriages, several jobs and many homes later, I would arrive at the point where I had started. My focus returned to the spiritual. I had never really left it completely; rather, I had become caught up in the distraction and self-possession of an insecure person in her twenties. All that I had deemed vital to an impressive life —academic prowess, theatrical talent, artistic ability and social approbation — now seemed horribly trivial and unworthy. Living from the mind is a grand deception. Selfishness erodes the spirit. During my extended stay in the brain, I was consumed with arrogance and judgment toward others. My soul was frozen. It was upon making the conscious choice to move
back into the infinite space of the heart that my spiritual journey accelerated. My goals have been redirected from personal appearance and acquisitiveness toward the cultivation of an affinity with all beings: yellow monarchs zigzagging through a powder blue sky; stately woodpeckers querying a wet burgundy branch for insects; frenetic squirrels scampering across frozen snow — all of these are literally my relatives. I feel compassion for the misfortune of others, rather than rejoicing that it is not my own. I send only positive intention toward the friend who has misused my good will. How could I wish for anyone to feel the same heart pain of the 11-year-old girl, betrayed by the very friend to whom she had been so kind? In living from the heart, I am able to be a more positive influence upon all other beings; and ironically, I selfishly gain the benefit of true happiness within. a Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D., M.A., has taught literature and composition for 18 years at the university, state, tribal and community college levels. She is currently a tenured English Faculty member at Normandale Community College. Janet enjoys her role as Ceremonial Singer for Native American ceremonies, singing traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota. She made a career shift into teaching after serving nearly eight years as a defense litigator in California. Her life changed significantly after she traveled to North Dakota in 1993 to fast and pray for a way of life. She welcomes correspondence at JanetRedFeather77@ gmail.com. Copyright © 2015.
