Following your bliss From the Editor by Tim Miejan

I had a lovely chat recently with intuitive and healer Nadine Penny, a regular monthly Edge columnist who shares her “Words of Wisdom” each month in print and her “Spirited Kidz” column each month online. Her desire to support the holistic development of young people is admirable. She inquired about the history of The Edge, and how it got its name. I told her the naming process took place three years before I was hired as editor, but my perspective of “the edge” is aligned with the sentiments of French poet, playwright, writer and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire, who was quoted: “Come to the edge.” “We can’t. We’re afraid.” “Come to the edge.” “We can’t. We will fall!” “Come to the edge.” And they came. And he pushed them. And they flew. I liken that sentiment to the tarot card known as “The Fool.” In the popular Rider-Waite tarot deck (above right), we see a young man who is walking (perhaps foolhardily) to the edge of a cliff without a care in the world, his satchel of belongings tied to a staff held in one hand and a rose held in the other. What is The Fool thinking? Perhaps nothing. He appears to be enjoying the mountain scenery and the sunshine, saying to himself, “If only I could stay here forever.” Symbolically, this tarot card reflects the childishness within us to follow our bliss, despite the distractions of the real world, like a puppy nipping at our heels. The Fool is a mystic on a journey with no beginning and no end. He probably doesn’t even see the cliff as danger, but a tremendous opportunity to be present without fear. The Fool relates directly to the challenge facing many of us who are walking together down a holistic path at this particular time in history, when entertainment and financial investment (in all its myriad forms) are heralded as THE EDGE MAGAZINE 763.433.9291 P.O. the paths to glory and success, when young boys grow up wanting to be rich like their music or sports idols and girls want to be divas.   It’s always tempting to follow the sparkle of gold. But The Fool, standing (gleefully?) on the edge, reminds us that the journey ultimately isn’t about having the most gold at the end of the game, but accumulating the most wisdom from © U.S. GAMES SYSTEMS INC. experience.   But what does following your bliss truly mean? Some people mistakenly think it means you can do whatever you want to and all your bills will be paid, but no one ever said that.   Joseph Campbell, on writing about “the hero’s journey,” said that following your bliss, and not being afraid, will allow doors to “open where you didn’t know they were going to be.” Following your bliss is a journey of selfexpression — the journey of soul expression. It is part of the hero’s journey because it requires patience and courage to embody the reason you are alive. What we’re learning about living now, especially during this time of great upheaval, is that many of us are having to become multitaskers, blissfully creating two or three channels through which prosperity can flow — multiple ways in which we can express our soul’s intent — and make a living at the same time. The greatest challenges we face are not comparing our path with those of others, maintaining the ethics that underlie what it means to live holistically, and simultaneously summoning the compassion to live in such a way with grace. Nobody said it would be easy. a

Sherry Lord never expected to become a professional medium, psychic and channel of an energetic collective known as Namara. She was a former mechanical engineer in automotive production near Detroit. In her 20s, she visualized numbers and occasionally played the lottery — and won $500 here and $1,000 there — but she chalked it all up to things she made up in her mind. By her 30s, Sherry’s perspective of reality began to change. “I had no idea of the metaphysical world. I was not introduced to it until I went through my changes in my 30s,” she says. “My abilities went to new levels and became quite profound. They were experiences I had not had before. I was awakening and evolving to my true path and my true passion. “My kids were young, teenagers, and I remember having a vision. I was sitting in my living room watching my kids argue while raking leaves in the yard. I thought, ‘I just wish they would get along.’ The next thing I knew, and this is very true, part of me became part of a tree trunk outside observing this metaphor. And as I looked outside, everything was in peace and harmony. This was the vision I had as I was looking outside. I saw Jesus standing there, and I saw myself as a little girl running into His arms. “I wasn’t afraid of what I was seeing. I just didn’t understand what was happening. My experi-

Internationally renowned animal communicator, intuitive counselor, teacher, inspirational speaker and radio host Asia Voight will present a keynote talk and two-day workshop at this year’s Minneapolis Psychic Symposium. ences were becoming very profound. I became very telepathic, and I could hear what people were thinking.” She visited a bookstore and, surprisingly, the shopkeeper understood what she was saying. Sherry was encouraged to attend a class to develop and understand her innate intuitive gifts. That led to many classes on intuition and healing, and three years later she was giving intuitive readings to others. “This became my passion,” she says. “It was something I cannot explain. It came from the heart. And I knew this is what I loved to do. I dedicated myself to moving forward on this life path. It’s about helping people to find peace. What I really love is that it’s about helping people to evolve consciously. You have all the answers within. You are your own master. You have a choice on the way to live your life. “ Sherry Lord, who now lives in Venice, Florida, will speak on “Co-Creating Wealth” at Minneapolis Psychic Symposium. She says that “wealth is simply a frequency,” and the process involves no longer separating the world and spirituality but to view it as one whole. “The key to co-creating wealth begins with having a very clear intention, and then taking action, which is the miracle. The third part is to allow, and the fourth part is to receive. People have a hard time receiving what they have created. All you have to do is see it as already done, and then take the physical steps to it. As you take the physical steps, you will be guided to what to do next by trusting your own intuition, your own inner being, of what you need to do.” a For more information on Sherry Lord, visit www.sherrylord.com

potential and life’s purpose. The following is an interview she conducted with The Edge on animals and intuition: Many pet owners get an intuitive sense that their animals understand them. Without knowing it, are many of them communicating with their pets the way you do? Asia Voight: Yes, many pet guardians are communi-

cating with their animal companions on multiple levels. There is, of course, the obvious physical level when you see your animal companion wanting to go out to the bathroom by standing and barking at the door. My clients move into a much deeper level of communication with their pets by increasing their intent to communicate with them telepathically. For example, they tell me they may be watching TV and spontaneously get up and go to the back door without any physical sign or noise from their dog and find them standing at the door. They heard their dog’s internal message. What I do as a professional animal communicator that is different from the average pet guardian Psychic continued on page 10 

 Paychic continued from page 8 is having full conscious conversations on any topic with an animal companion. With practice, many of my students are able to do the same. Sometimes, when pet parents are learning deeper levels of communication, they don’t trust their messages. I am a neutral person with a clear objective view, a counselor at times, who can aid in clearing up any miscommunications, issues or problems. My father calls me an animal therapist! We have been taught that dog is man’s best friend. Is that the general reason dogs share a part in our lives? AV: Yes, all animals especially dogs, lend

themselves to unconditional love. They are able to effortlessly “get under our defensive, closed-hearted” behaviors and literally wiggle their way deep into our hearts. Animals also come into our lives for complex reasons. They may act as mirrors to help us heal our dysfunctions, or to assist us in authentically living in our power. After a horrific car fire and near-death experience 25 years ago, my dog Makeba saved my life. I had horrible pain, was depressed and unwilling to get out of bed. My beloved dog would not give up on me

like other people had in my life. She was 80 pounds of grey and black fluff, strength and determination. While I moped in bed, she pushed her leash in my face clearly saying, “Get up!” If that didn’t work, she jumped up and down on the bed until I took her for a walk. Ultimately I gained strength and my body healed faster. If dog is man’s best friend, what is cat? What role, in general, do cats serve in our lives? AV: Cats fill the wise role of mystic, sage

and seer. Whether they are silly or serious, they diligently urge us towards living our soul’s purpose in a balanced and grounded way. They are extremely uncomfortable with disharmony, and energetic or emotional instability. They are concerned with protecting us from any high frequency imbalances, such as their person’s negative thoughts. Most of these imbalances we are unaware of, so our beloved felines are indeed angels in fur watching over us. What experiences have you had lately with animals related to the current transformation of energies on the planet? How is this shift of consciousness affecting them? AV: I have been hearing animals asking

for all humans, especially their special companions, to learn how to speak with

Michael Bodine

Keynote Talk: Answers • 2:30-4 p.m. Saturday, March 1 • $19 general admission and $29 VIP in advance at www.Edgelife.net or 1.877.776.5244

Michael Bodine is a member of the most well-known family of intuitives in the Twin Cities. He’s the brother of noted author, psychic, ghostbuster and healer Echo Bodine. And he feels destined to remain a full-time psychic and medium for the foreseeable future, albeit reluctantly. “I’d like to do other things,” he said, “but every time I try to do other things, I get sucked back into psychic things because dead people show up.” Perhaps that’s what he’s meant to be doing. “I guess,” he deadpans. “I got the low end of the stick somehow.” Author of Growing Up Psychic: From Skeptic to Believer, Michael has worked in California where he was known as the Psychic for the Stars, but he’s now back in Minnesota and will be one of three keynote speakers at the Minneapolis Psychic Symposium on the topic of “Answers.” “The whole thing about psychics is that people come to them for answers,” he said, “even if they have simple questions like, ‘Is there really such things as ghosts?’ or ‘Is there something other than what I think going on?’ Everyone who comes to me is coming for answers. A lot of times, it’s not always the answer that they want, or the answer that they hope it is. “My point is that people actually get the answers themselves. They just don’t realize it. My talk will be about how people can get the answers on their own, without needing somebody to tell them. People usually have the answer. Either they don’t want to pay attention to it or it’s not what they want to hear. If they go to a psychic, then I guess it validates it more for them.” The problem, Michael explains, is when people use psychic advice instead of their own personal sense of what to do when

10

them. The large gap in communication between species is so damaging to the earth’s well-being. The animals say, “Now is the time to make the effort and reawaken your ability to communicate with animals.” I know everyone is capable of this beautiful connection. Finally, what message would you like to leave with our readers regarding animal communication? AV: Animal communication allows under-

standing during challenging times with your pets. For example, a perceived misbehavior might really be a call for help. They may have undiagnosed pain or illness in their body, or they’re feeling your own internal emotional or physical angst needing relief. There’s no need to wonder if you are doing right by your dogs, cats and horses. With animal communication you don’t waste time and money trying to figure out what’s wrong. You simply ask. You also gain peace of mind during end-of-life decisions. Finally, if you can only learn a fraction of how your pets communicate, it will deepen your love and change your life forever. a

making potentially serious life choices. “In my line of work, it’s really dangerous for somebody to become too attached to what you’re saying, because they may take power away from themselves and put the responsibility on somebody else. It’s bad in any situation to rely too much on somebody else. It’s too much power for an outsider to have. In my mind, that’s not right.” When a client who has received accurate information from him in the past begins to rely on him too much, Michael said he may lie to them and tell them things he knows will not happen so they stop relying on him so much. “I tell them ahead of time that if they start becoming too dependent upon me, then our relationship will change.” He says it’s frustrating because every day he meets people who have their own answers but do not pay attention to them. He says the reason many of us choose not to listen inwardly is the result of how we feel about ourselves. “I think it’s all about self-worth. Somewhere along the way, they were told that their opinion does not matter. In a simpler term, it’s the devil. In a more complex way of looking at it, it’s someone’s negative self-talk, their attitudes about themselves or a lack of respect for themselves. It stops people all the time.” After working 40 years as a psychic, Michael says the truth is that psychics are not all-knowing people who have all the answers and have figured everything out. Sadly, he says there is too much competition among psychics as a result of what Michael calls “third-eye envy,” when a psychic is jealous toward another psychic who seems to be more accurate in making predictions. “Psychics are no different than everyone else,” he said. “We’re all here in the same soup, trying to figure things out and trying to be better. Psychics talk to dead people. That’s their job. But they’re still learning how to be in relationships, and how to not smoke so much and how to eat better.” a For more information on Michael Bodine, visit www.michaelbodine.com

Kirtan Fest 2014

by Susan Shehata

Minneapolis is at the forefront of the Midwest kirtan movement. Kirtan is a musical form of bhakti yoga, the yoga of devotion. The music is dynamic, inspiring and participatory. Kirtan originated as the folk music of India, and it consists of singing ancient Sanskrit mantras set to both traditional and original melodies and spanning many different musical genres, including jazz, rock and folk. The intent is to repeat tones and mantras to clear the mind, the heart and the body. Many people are called to this music, and there is a strong movement building in the West of this traditionally Eastern music genre. Concerts involve a kirtan leader and/or band guiding participants through a series of songs that build in energy, momentum and tempo, until an ecstatic, joyful collective song emerges. Then the song, or “bhajan,” winds down and ends leaving space for a sweet, silent meditation. This music doesn’t require experience or a confident singing voice. It is about connecting with both your own spirit and the community around you. The effects are greater clarity, freedom of expression, peace of mind and interconnection. With those results, it’s no wonder that the kirtan movement is spreading fast. I am a part of Raising the Consciousness, the production company that produces the Twin Cities Kirtan Fest, along with Keith Helke and Colleen Buckman. We have devoted our lives to community building, healing work, and bringing forward more kirtan and conscious music to the planet. We have chosen to create events and opportunities for the community because we are devoted to this global consciousness. We are assisted by a dedicated team of volunteers, like longtime helpers Carrie Mahoney and Lauren Uecker, who make this event successful. Raising the Consciousness is dedicated

An invitation: The Cosmic Hum by Sister Cecilia Corcoran

Last summer I was introduced to the “cosmic hum” while attending the Healing Sound Intensive at Sunrise Ranch near Loveland, Colorado, with Jonathan Goldman, an international leader in the harmonics of sound healing. We chanted the Divine Name, a series of vowels for the unspeakable name of God. The phrase, like a sigh, repeated again and again, carried not only harmony of voice, but an awakening of spirit. The gathering of almost 100 people became transformed into an open-hearted community. Were we brought into unity because we spent full days breathing those prolonged deep breaths while toning in harmonics? Was it the vowel sounds themselves that resonated and projected healing sounds all around and into us? “Everything in the universe is in a state of vibration,” Goldman says. “Everything is in motion and produces a sound or frequency.” So what has that to do with inner wellbeing and transformation experienced by chanting? I looked deeper for the answer. Cynthia Bourgeault, author of The Trinity and the Law of Three, wraps her head around the question of creation (how something came from nothing.) Being a theologian, she explores the Holy Trinity as the creator, but pushes beyond familiar descriptions of Father, Son and Holy Spirit as she explores questions of what primal action actually brought the “big bang.” She includes sound and vibrations that responded to inaccessible light and reflected light that existed before any matter. The Unfolding Process When it was time in the unfolding process of eternity, a vibration began to stir, a something out of nothingness from which everything evolved. This everything holds the vibrational thread with the Source — and now, 14 billion years later, here we are in this vast, complex multiverse. I see that Presence in energy as the creative, healing power of sound. There is something that wants to heal us, something deeper than our DNA, some constant self-regulating current that gets heightened with our intention. This seems to be accessed through sound, the healing sound of chanting or the intention of aligning oneself with a hum, a sound of

nature or an instrument. The roar of the ocean, the wind through the forest, the gentle lapping of water at the shore, the trill of a bird, the sound of a flute: We live in a world of healing sound, of sounds that calm us, or energize us, that grate on our nerves or set us on edge. Sounds may soothe or stir us to action. Sounds alert us to danger or lull us to sleep. But sound does not only come to us. Like the wind, we each carry our own vibrational presence. We may be aware of it as a movement that beats with our heart, but sometimes we are the last to become aware of this pulse inside of us that carries life and healing to all parts of our body. Through our own voice, our humming, our song, shout or scream, our sobs and the sighs we emit, we seek well-being, integration, authenticity and union. ease the heart Today, studies confirm that the ancient practice of chanting and toning can calm the mind and ease the heart. Through harmonics, we have a greater understanding of frequencies of pitches and the power of metal or crystal bowls and tuning forks to enhance sound and vibrations. These practices and instruments, when used by sound healers, open the mind and heart. Add intention to all the vibrational stirring within and the possibilities for transformation are multiplied. When one consciously chooses to direct one’s voice to carry love and healing, we become a prayer and our compassion rides on the current of sound outward to its destination. It is a simple practice that sends out healing energy. It can be done anytime, but on occasion there are opportunities to join our voices to others around the planet. Even as I write, I am interrupted by an

The Christine Center, a spirituality retreat center in Central Wisconsin, will sponsor a weekend retreat, Praying with Sacred Sound, on February 14-16. The public is invited to learn the many spiritual and healing benefits of chanting and learn how to let tones, vibrations, and frequencies fill your consciousness as the group chants together.   “Explore chanting to experience a field of harmonic sound that is permeated with love,” says Cecy Corcoran, FSPA, Ph.D., who will facilitate the retreat with addictions counselor Wendy Kohlhass. “As we vocalize our heart’s desire through simple chants, we surrender to the healing power of sound. We come to be more present to ourselves and to one another.”   The chanting will take place in the Center’s meditation hall, which features wonderful acoustics. Every voice is welcome. No skill or ability is required. Come to listen, to be present to your voice and to the voice of the group. Wendy will use her singing crystal bowls to create calming, healing frequencies that lead to that still, interior place.   Both facilitators studied last year with Jonathan Goldman’s Healing Sounds Intensive at Sunrise Ranch, Estes Park, Colorado.   Cost of the retreat is a sliding scale of $75-$150, plus meals and lodging. Spirits and Voices from Distant Shores Symposium Traditional musicians from the Andes Mountains and authors of new books on pre-Atlantian times, lost colonies of ancient America, and ghosts will headline a five-hour symposium titled “Spirits and Voices from Distant Shores” from 2-7 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Spirit United Church, 3204 Como Ave. SE, Minneapolis. The Saturday symposium, sponsored by the Minneapolis Theosophical Society, will include free refreshments. Admission is $35 adults, $45 for couples or families, and $30 for students, seniors and Theosophical Society members. Register at the door or in advance at Minneapolis Theosophical Society, c/o Von Braschler, 1034 Dayton Ave., St. Paul, MN 55104. Email vonbraschler@gmail. com or call 651.235.6645. Frank Joseph, of Wabasha, MN, will discuss his new book, The Lost Colonies of Ancient America, and another recent release, Before Atlantis. Joseph is the author of some 30 books on ancient civilizations and mysteries and is a leading international researcher on Atlantis and pre-Columbian civilizations. He will speak at the symposium on ancient civilizations, specifically ancient American civilizations that have been long ignored and forgotten. He will offer copies of his new books and be on hand to sign them. Von Braschler, of St. Paul, will discuss his forthcoming book from Inner Traditions, Confessions of a Reluctant Ghost Hunter: A Cautionary Tale of Encounters with Malevolent Entities and Other Disembodied Spirits. The new book offers a narrative account of his own training and work in removing deceased people from homes and churches and his personal discovery that some spirits should be left alone. He is also the author of the recent book, Seven Secrets of Time Travel. Copies of his books will be on hand for sale and signing. The seven-piece band Alma Andina, now based in Minnesota, will play traditional music from the Andes Mountains and Latin America, where members of the band originate. The band plays spiritual songs that honor the mountains, water, sky, and valleys. Alma Andina plays traditional South American Andean instruments, such as the charango (a strummed string instrument), zampoñas (pan pipes) and quenas (wooden flutes). The band’s director, Vladimir Garrido, compares the work of Alma Andina to that of Chilean musicians who were exiled during the regime of dictator Augusto Pinochet. They performed a fusion of native and non-native music.

A conversation with Frank Joseph Frank Joseph, former editor-in-chief of Ancient American Magazine, will be a featured speaker at the Symposium. He explores the latest findings from archeology, anthropology, paleontology, geology and biology to shed new light on the vague history we hold for the the 20 million year timeline from the rise and fall of pre-humans and human culture. He discusses ancient seafarers and early migrations across the oceans. Frank, you will be speaking about two new books. What is Before Atlantis about, in a nutshell? Frank Joseph: It shows that early hominids, like the dolphins’

ancestors, were evolving into sea animals, until, like similarly seabound, pre-modern elephants, they returned to the land. Before Symposium continued on page 14  February 2014   the edge

 Symposium continued from page 13 Atlantis demonstrates how our hybrid origins as aquatic apes made us what we are, namely, a schizophrenic species, half compassionate, quick-witted mammal, half greedy killer-chimp. What is your other new book, Lost Colonies of Ancient America, about? FJ: Each chapter deals exclusively with one

of the different peoples who arrived at our continent before Columbus. My book examines the latest, best evidence for Egyptian cocaine dealers in Colombia, Phoenician vintners in Maine, Roman merchants in Kentucky, Knights Templar in Minnesota, and other colonizing folk from the ancient Old World, who contributed to the publicly unknown prehistory of America.

What did you learn during the writing of these books that everyone should know? FJ: Although I have been studying possi-

bilities for overseas visitors to our continent from the ancient Old World for more than thirty years, only pulling it all together in Lost Colonies of Ancient America did the high drama of these various peoples finally expand into a broad, continuous panorama I never before envisioned. A similar experience came about while writing Before Atlantis, the immense scope of which extends from our early evolution and brush with extinction to our first civilization and earliest global culture — all long prior to and entirely different from official textbook versions of the past. What inspires you to explore ancient history? FJ: The more we learn about what happened,

the clearer we understand how we got here and where we are going. Only a fool or a blind man sees no connection between past, present and future. We do the things we do because of the things we did. Our identity lies in our origins. History makes sense of the world.

What overall message do you want to impart to those who attend the symposium? FJ: That each one of them is a link in a very

long chain — the current outcome of everything that has happened to their precursors over the last two million years. Such an understanding provides us with a sense of place, significance and meaning, even purpose, if we feel such a legacy personally carried within our very cellular nature demands responsibility to those who come after us. A true torch-bearer, conscious of his own, fleeting mortality, does not only want to illuminate his own surroundings, but pass it on to the next runner. Without such idealism, we would have never made it this far and will go no further.

A conversation with Von Braschler St. Paul author Von Braschler will round out the “Spirits and Voices from Distant Shores” symposium with a description of his own training and deadly experiences as a ghost hunter. His book, due out in the fall, outlines some practical things to do and avoid in removing ghosts from buildings. His book is a factual account of mysterious decapitations, animal mutilations, and shape-shifting spirits that sometimes prove too difficult to remove from their haunts. Von, you will be speaking about your upcoming book, Confessions of a Reluctant Ghost Hunter. What is it about, in a nutshell? Von Braschler: The book is a narrative, true

story of my experiences as a person trained to contact ghosts in haunted houses and encourage them to leave. I was trained by a wonderful professional who lived on Orcas Island in the San Juans back in the early 1980s. She would visit houses and other buildings that were haunted and then make contact with the deceased people who haunted them and encourage them to move on. She was very sweet and effective. I took notes. Later, however, I moved to Mt. Hood in Oregon where I encountered spirits that did not appear to be anything like somebody’s deceased Aunt Ruth and were not as agreeable once you met them. I had three very difficult assignments in Oregon that made me reconsider how safe it was to walk blindly into a building reported as haunted and attempt to encourage spirits there to leave. My stories include mutilation, decapitation, animal deaths, fires, and floating heads. For some thirty years I suppressed the memories of these very difficult hauntings, but decided to purge myself by telling these stories. My book will provide basic instruction on how to approach ghosts, what to bring, what to do, and what to avoid. Why were you inspired to write this book? VB: Today we see many movies, books, and

even popular reality shows on TV that seem to glorify ghost hunting as a fun sport. Many people apparently think that it would be very entertaining and perhaps enlightening to summon the spirits. I now believe that walking blindly into any of that could be very dangerous and even fatal. Not every spirit that haunts a building happens to be a deceased person who is simply confused or innocently reluctant to move on. There are other spirits that are much more alien and deadly.

What did you learn during the writing of this book that everyone should know? VB: Not all spirits who haunt us are deceased

people. Some could even be demonic. We are no match for these other spirits and should avoid them. Also, we should think twice about trying to communicate with the dead for two practical reasons. First, we don’t know who or what will come across when we reach out to them; and they can deceive us about their true identity and intent. Secondly, it’s just plain rude to bother the dead, because they need to move on and not be pulled back to this world and this life. How much of a nuisance are ghosts, in general, and why should someone consider seeking the assistance of a ghost hunter? VB: It’s truly sad and concerning whenever

a deceased person becomes too confused or frightened upon passing to move beyond this physical plane of existence. Of course, they need whatever help we can realistically offer them, often the efforts of a ghost hunter who will take the time to contact them, communicate with them, and gently persuade them to move on, as they can so easily do once motivated. In truth, we probably live with many more ghosts than we realize, since some have fallen into ritualistic patterns of co-existing in this time and place without bothering anyone who shares the same buildings with them. In fact, they are probably not even aware of the living for the most part. Unfortunately, this is not the whole picture with regard to haunted buildings. Some spirits are not so cooperative and easy going. Some are spirits of a different sort. Some are dark, dangerous, and not of this world. These should be avoided.

What overall message do you want to impart to those who attend the symposium? VB: Please give serious thought to the dark

side of ghost hunting and the sort of sport that has become popular on TV and elsewhere in the media. A lot of it goes too far and is more like ghost stalking. A lot of it pays little compassion to the unfortunate deceased person who might be stuck in place and uncomfortable with that situation. A lot of it is a dangerous intrusion into a spirit realm that is filled with a variety of unknown spirits, some of whom are mischief makers and quite dangerous on contact. Once you get these genies out of the bottle, it’s very difficult to put them safely away. We need to respect the dead and help the unfortunate souls who are stuck here as reluctant ghosts, but avoid bothering the dead who have peacefully departed and playing with other dangerous spirits who never were anyone’s dead Aunt Ruth, but might make you think they are now. a

Moving on through grief, depression by Rev. Lisa Severson We all have experienced a sense of grief in our lives. Whether from losing a loved one, a job or a relationship, it can be a very intense and emotional process. In some cases we go through it and it passes, in others it may stay with us in some form or another for a life time. I believe these kinds of life experiences are what our spirituality is best suited to help us navigate. Elizabeth Kübler Ross wrote many years ago about five stages of grief. While she later stated that this work was over-simplified and that grief was much more complicated than what she originally stated, some of those stages are a good starting point when trying to deal with any major loss. My mother passed on in June and I have spent a lot of time dealing with the emotions surrounding my sense of grief and loss. I have come to rely on my spiritual training and background to move forward again in my life. When we lose a loved one, it is common to feel anger and depression, to try to bargain with God, to deny in some way what is or has happened and to feel anxious about the future. Applying spiritual principles to these emotions and situations can be very helpful. For my own loss, I had a very hard time applying anything other than raw emotional reactions for some time. My mother was ill for quite a while and needed a lot of care and help dealing with her living situation, finances and life in general. These times in a person’s life can be all-consuming and leave little energy for anything, especially prayer, meditation or contemplation. But even with all of that, I still had a sense of at least knowing I had tools to fall back on even if I couldn’t use them much at the time. There was a comfort in knowing they were there. As things progressed and my mother’s passing was upon us, I took comfort in what I believe about the afterlife. That everything is energy and she was just passing on to another room, as it were. That she was moving on, out of this dimension and into another. When I found myself in denial or feeling angry, I prayed. Even if I couldn’t feel terribly connected while I did it, I knew in my heart it was helping. And I always felt better. I also practiced living in the present moment and taking on only what was before me at the moment. Admittedly, I needed to be reminded of that daily. Thank God for my friends and family for helping me with that by talking me “off the ledge” frequently. Depression is a large part of grief, and I experienced that deeply for the first time in my life with her passing. What’s helped the most with this and with the anxiety that often goes along with it is practicing compassion — true and loving patience and compassion for myself and this process, knowing that there is no right or wrong way to do this and loving myself no matter what my grief looks like today. I have come to realize that compassion is the hallmark of all spirituality. Coming from the heart, nurturing your heart, and allowing yourself to feel cradled in the heart of God or Spirit creates true healing and comfort in times of distress. There are quite a few other things that can help while you are grieving, such as yoga, journaling, going to get energy work, spending time outside in nature, and talking to friends or a counselor. There is no one way or one path to healing your heart after losing someone you love. All of these paths are spiritual in that they bolster your heart and help you feel connected to something loving and larger than you and your grief. That, I have found, is the most healing thing of all. a Rev. Lisa Severson of Living Love Ministries is an Intuitive Energy Healer, Spiritual Guide and Interfaith Minister. My Guardian Angel’S VOICE by Paul Chika Emekwulu An excerpt from excerpt from Writing Down Your Dreams: Listen to Your Inner Voice and Change Your Life On December 4, 2004, I was driving home by myself after running an errand. I came to a traffic light on 24th Avenue and Main Street in Norman, a city about 20 miles south of downtown Oklahoma City. When the traffic light is red, we are taught to stop. It is illegal to proceed when the light is red. That is the law. Similarly, when the light is green, the most logical thing to do is to proceed, but with caution. That is also the law. As I approached the traffic light, the red light was on. I was waiting for the light to turn green so that I could make a left-hand turn. The light eventually turned green. I did not move. Let me say it again. I did not move. Why? Here is why. I did not move because of a voice — a voice I heard so audibly that said, “Do not move.” This was not a schizophrenic moment. Hearing such a voice is regarded by some as clairaudience. While I was sitting stationary at the green light, after being advised not to move, a few seconds later a red pick-up truck moving at about 50 mph (in a 40 mph zone) ran the red light on the cross street. Close your eyes for a few seconds. Think of what could have happened to anyone in a similar situation (it could have been you). A driver or pehaps an entire family could have been incapacitated or killed. Wow!

Had I moved — not even maybe, not even probably — I would have been killed or incapacitated for life. I really don’t know how the accident would have transpired, but it was averted. Pause for a moment and think of what could have happened had I not listened and obeyed that voice. Had I not listened and obeyed that voice, I wouldn’t have been alive to write the article you are reading now. Had I been flipping radio stations, or lighting a cigarette (I am not a smoker), or texting or talking on my cell, I probably would not have heard the voice that told me not to move. This voice speaks every language; it communicates to you in whatever language you speak. I received insights from this experience. Whenever you are driving, think of the following:  Just because the traffic light is green, it doesn’t mean it is safe to proceed.  Just because the traffic light is green, it

EXPERIENCING the gift of An Angel’s Light by Kim Eisen You never know where you’ll encounter an angel. When you do, you’ll never forget it. It was a beautiful warm day in March 2001 and I was on vacation in Mazatlan, Mexico. It was about fun, partying and visiting old energy portals and beaches, yet, something was about to change my life forever and I didn’t see it coming. We visited the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in the historic downtown as we had done before in previous years and enjoyed the energy of the portal even as we were a city block away, walking towards it. I had forgotten that three years earlier an intuitive friend of mine had told me I would have an encounter with an angel after visiting a gray church featuring a skylight and angel

doesn’t mean that the other driver is safe.  The traffic light that is green is a signal that you can proceed, but is more of a signal that you have to be very careful before proceeding.  Any traffic light that is green is not a signal that your safety is guaranteed. A word of caution: please, while driving, be patient. Also, think of the consequences (possible loss of life, incapacitation, grief, expensive tickets, high insurance premiums, etc.). a Paul Chika Emekwulu was born in Ekwulobia in southeastern Nigeria. statues all around. It didn’t happen that year, so I just dismissed her words as a nice thought. What would an angel want with me anyway, unless I was dying? That evening as we were having dinner, I started receiving messages for my friend. I was conscious, but I didn’t have much recollection of what was said exactly, as the message wasn’t for me. This was to become my first channeling of the angels. That night, what I now call a “happening” occurred. It’s when you know it’s not a dream, but it’s just too “real” for any other explanation. An angel appeared to me (I can still see his face and shoulder-length wavy hair). When he looked at me, he beamed beautiful white light into my eyes. It was so bright that my human self wanted to turn away, but it felt perfectly safe and I was surprisingly comfortable with it. Intuitively, I knew it was OK. It was amazing — and no words will ever convey the feeling. I’m not sure exactly how long it lasted as I quickly fell back to sleep. The next morning, we were on our way to a beach excursion. My friend, who I had known since childhood, looked at me in awe saying, ‘What happened to you eyes? They are the most beautiful

Love Angels IN ACTION by Lisa Venable I believe in human angels. I also believe that as humans, we have a great need for love. I discovered a real treasure when I finally put the two together! Here’s my story: Over the last few years, I spent many days visiting my 102-year-old grandmother who lives on the memory care unit of Martin Luther Care Center. Each time I made my way to her room, I’d walk by lonely, anxious and sad-looking residents. Since my spiritual practice is to “Be Love,” I would stop and hold a hand, caress a cheek or offer simple acknowledgment of feelings. Within a couple of minutes, the person lit up. Realizing I could make a big difference with this medicine of Love, I began to envision a “Love Angel” volunteer program focused on compassion care. Not long after I announced my vision to friends and center staff, an angel appeared to solidify the mission. I was recovering from my second major foot surgery and knew I had to amplify my “patience practice.” I wrote the word “patience” on a sticky note as my focus. Shortly thereafter, during a visit to Grandma, I encountered a new resident sitting alone in the lounge area of the unit. I asked if I could elevate my foot on the couch by her. She asked me what was wrong and I gave her my story of many years of painful foot problems. She looked off into the ethers and simply said, “God says to be patient and He will heal your foot!” I was awestruck as she continued to say, “patience, patience, patience.” I smiled and asked her if she’d be one of my “Love Angels.”

She said, “Of course, but you must wear my ring.” She took a glowing, silver ring off her finger and placed it in my hesitant hand. “I can’t take your ring,” I told her, but she pressed on. “You can give it back to me someday, but you need it now.” To my joy, the ring beheld a little angel holding a heart. And — no kidding — the heart said, “I love you.” Thus, I had found my first “Love Angel,” an Alzheimer’s patient no less, and the program birthed itself. Imagine a group of “angels” flocking about with angel feathers adding a light, loving presence to a nursing home. In our special T-shirts (and sometimes wings), we offer comfort and compassion. Through deep listening or holding a hand, our volunteers spread joy and embrace suffering without trying to “fix” it. Being a witness to feelings or fears is often the most powerful medicine we can offer. Simply “holding space” for someone’s emotions can make a huge impact even just for a few minutes.

color, almost indescribable, kind of like a gun metal silver grey. “What?” I thought, “that can’t be true. My eyes are hazel.” I found the nearest mirror and sure enough, they had changed. The grey color lasted all day, and by the end of the evening they had restored to their original hazel color. That night, the angel came back and beamed more light into my eyes — and again, my eye color changed and then returned to hazel the next afternoon. I was a spiritual healer, but I didn’t know what this meant. A few years later, after I had long let go of trying to figure it out, I attended a gathering and was allowed to ask one question of the Akashic records. I wanted to be coy and not give anything away, so my question was, “Who was the being that came to me and beamed light into my eyes?” Before I could even finish the sentence, the answer was spoken. “It was Archangel Raphael, the angel of healing, and he had come to change your internal optical vision so you may see inside the body, and the emotional body, and view the original trauma that causes the difficulty in a person or see what action might be suggested to help.”

Simple statements like these offers relief and comfort: I hear how you feel; I know; I understand; tell me about it.   One resident told us how wonderful the Love Angels are and how good it feels to have someone hold her hand and talk to her. One resident said he wanted us to be part of his “family.” Another was distraught that she had forgotten the Lord’s prayer, so I wrote the words for her on a large piece of paper so she could read it (and she did for the next half hour!) The miracle is that we are not the true angels — the residents are. Each of us feels like we receive more than we give, which was quite unexpected. Our community needs this Love medicine on many fronts. As I spread my angel wings, I am blessed to know the power of Love and hope you will join me in some small way. Will you be a Love Angel? Give a kindness to someone in need with just a gentle touch or kind word? It really is so simple. a For more information on the “Love Angel” volunteer program, please visit the site messagesfromlove.com/love-angels.html. Now it all made sense. After the “happening,” I began seeing things in my clients and receiving messages for them or questions to ask. Angels supporting me and my clients began to guide me during sessions of healing. Since then, this process has become normal for me. I call upon the angels in a variety situations, such as helping to find a lost item, healing, and to help me handle a challenging situation. They are here to be of service — and you don’t have to wait until you’re in a life-or-death situation to ask for assistance. All you have to do is ask. It is my hope that, in your own way, calling upon the angels can be normal for you, too. a Kim Eisen is a Life Breakthrough Success Coach and Master of EFT. THE DAY MY ANGEL EARNED HIS Wings IN SUPPORT OF ME by Liz Loney Many of us can recall the angel called Clarence in the holiday classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, featuring Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey. Clarence’s divine assignment was to save George from his own destructive self-doubt, and in reward Clarence would earn his angel wings. But, I don’t want to give away the end of my story so soon. One thing angels have in common is that they seem to appear out of nowhere, always at a crucial time or crossroads in one’s life. It also seems that one needs to “reach out” into the vast ethereal realm and “ask for help” — whether this “asking” is a deep yearning of the soul, a fervent prayer, a quick plea, or a very loud, “Help me! I can’t take it anymore,” as Jimmy Stewart seemed to be proclaiming as he prepared to jump from a bridge into sub-zero waters at Christmas time. This signal is sent forth out into the divine mystery, and then, most often in the nick of time, the angel appears! Now, some angels show up and save the day prior to, say, a large flying object almost falling on your car. The angel clearly whispers into your ear, “Turn a little to the left,” and by golly, that huge mass of something or another just misses slamming into you. And then there are those angels who show up and save the day for close to 365 days a year (in my case) going on 2-1/2 years by calling at 9 a.m. every single morning with the exception of some brief (and well-earned) vacation time to Europe or their daughter’s farm. This is the case with my angel, Jack. Jack is a retired English teacher in his mid-80s. He was 85 years young on Dec. 28, 2013, to be exact. I know this, because I took him out to lunch for a belated birthday. I wanted to know what Jack thought about life and death — and why in the world he saved me.

The emergency But first, you should know how Jack saved me. On June 28, 2011, I collapsed. I stopped my car and quickly got out to lie flat on the green grass of a stranger’s front lawn in order to breathe. I was pretty sure these were the last few seconds of my consciousness, of life itself, so I reached for my cell phone, called my mother and told her I loved her. Then I called Jack. After lying completely flat so that there was no pressure on the back of my neck for a good 10 minutes, the peripheral nerves began to release enough so that oxygen

18

www.edgemagazine.net

could flow into my head. Jack picked me up in his car and drove me the seven blocks to my home. My mother appeared shortly thereafter. I remained homebound for almost two years. I was unable to sit in a car and handle the motion or even walk down the front steps of my home, let alone down to the basement. The peripheral nervous system does heal, but it does so very incrementally and very slowly. I could have given up and become totally self-absorbed, negative, bitter and depressed. Instead, I chose hope and patience and endurance — and I was rewarded with Jack. That’s the way I see it anyway. Even when we don’t opt for the high road, we are very often sent the assistance of angels. They are just harder to recognize then, because our vision is so bleak. Every day, Jack called me promptly at 9 a.m. and always asked the same question, “So, how are you doing today?” I could reduce all the responses that I gave to the same basic version of the following: “I can’t believe how much my neck and head released last night. I must have twisted and turned for two hours in the middle of the night, almost like a ballet dancer, it was so effortless — and again, for another hour or so after I woke up. It is amazing just what my body is doing to heal.” Jack listened, just as amazed, yet ever calm and ever present. The whole experience was a traumatic one, yet the trauma was almost non-existent due to Jack’s morning calls. I began to realize that among other things, healing is the process of trusting life. I knew I was healing, however slowly. As a life coach, I decided to begin marketing my business in a new way. I founded a cooperative marketing organization of entrepreneurs in the community. Of course, our early meetings were always in my living room until I could lie in the back of someone’s car and be driven to our public meeting venue. I now drive myself to meetings and all over town.

Questions for Jack Now, back to those questions that I had for Jack. These are the questions I asked Jack over a turkey sandwich and ice tea, along with his responses:  What is the meaning of life? Find out somehow what other people need and act accordingly.  What do you think happens to us when we die? Well, we live on through our experiences with other people and whatever they learn from their connection with us — whatever destination our spirit needs to have, and I don’t know what that is.  Do you believe in angels? Yes, I do. Who they are and when they appear in our lives, I have no idea.  Why did you decide to help me? I came to know you and saw that you had a need to be filled and tried to fill that need.  How were you able to hang in there so long with me? I continued to see what you needed and tried to fill that in some small way. I saw that you needed someone to connect with. After my questions, we began talking generally. Jack told me that after he retired from teaching at age 58, he wanted to become a healer. He took classes from the late Dr. Paula Sunray, a well-known Twin Cities spiritualist. Dr. Sunray told Jack that now he was ready for the Master’s class, and in order to complete that he needed to “effect a miracle.” “Dr. Sunray is one of the few old masters who has the knowledge and connection to the higher realms necessary for the journey ahead — the journey of the mind into the final frontier. Her instruction is “akami,” channeled from the highest dimension.” — Pila of Hawaii, author, seer and teacher of the ancient wisdom With the thought of effecting a miracle, Jack felt a bit overwhelmed. A month later, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and his upper left lobe was removed. He did not return for the Master class. Suddenly, we both had the same thought, which we expressed aloud. Jack had completed his Master’s training, effecting a true miracle in me and definitely earning his wings. My intent in writing this story was to convey the the generosity of spirit, selflessness, humility, kindness, compassion and extreme patience of my angel Jack. I hope in some small way you have gotten to know him. a Liz Loney is the Director of Minneapolis Lakes Professionals and a Certified Life Coach. Contact her at 612.922.9150 or lloney77@aol.com. ANGELIC RESPONSE, WHEN WE NEED IT MOST by Psychics in the Cities

As the three of us work together — in readings, galleries and at events — we are always aware that angels are all around us, helping us deliver messages of love to those who put their trust in us. But we have also had many experiences as individuals that reinforce our knowledge that the Universe sends us these beautiful creatures when we need them the most. Judie: About a year ago, I was going through a rough patch in my “day” profession. I was very upset about things, but I also knew that I needed to turn over my troubles to the Universe. A couple of days later, during a massage, an angel showed up. He was about 8 feet tall and very stately, standing at the foot of the massage table. He was wearing a silky, shimmering, celery green gown. Around his waist was a golden belt from which a large sword was hanging. I asked for his name. He said “Henry.” I commented that I had a grandfather named Henry, but that my memory of him was that he wasn’t very nice. Angel Henry replied that he was not my grandfather, but what I remembered was true. After the massage was over, the masseuse commented on how she had felt another presence in the room. She said she had felt “guided” during the whole session. She asked if I knew anything about that. I grinned and told her what had happened. So I turned it all over to Henry. Within a month, things were resolved to my satisfaction. Since then, whenever I have been in need of help, I have turned things over to Henry. To assist him, I also do my homework. I make a list of how I want things to be resolved and how I want to feel about the situation. In doing so, I am owning my own responsibility for how my life is to be. But I am also giving all of this over to Henry, so that he and the Universe can bring to me what is in my best interest (or better). Debra: As an angel communicator, I have seen angels. I have talked to angels. I have heard Angels. I know angels! My own angels are very busy. They have saved my life and the lives of those I love. I raised four lively boys, so it goes without saying that our home and lives were full of protective angels. They once gave me a warning in the middle of the night when I awakened to a loud pounding on my door, only to find no one there. I then realized that the garage door had accidentally been left wide open that night. Less than ten minutes later, I saw out the window an old car going by very slowly, as if it were casing the neighborhood. Once, sitting at a red light that turned green, I heard a voice tell me not to go. The car behind me honked. I was still sitting there, with the guy behind me honking, when a car went racing through the red light.

And on a very sad and lonely night, filled with worry and doubt about my personal life, I saw a beautiful angel, a sparkling, brilliant gold in color, right beside my bed. When people have been very down and sad, I have seen angels very close to them. I have seen huge and small angels, female and male angels, transparent and solid angels. I have never seen an angry angel or a sad angel. I have asked my angels many questions, sometimes repeatedly. They make me smile and laugh, and I make them smile and laugh. I tell people that mine may be the only angels that have to go to therapy! I have felt them close to me and felt them hug me. They are there and I love them. I don’t need to end this lifetime on Earth to know my angels, to see them or hear them. Neither do you. They are there and they love you. Connie: A few years ago, a plane that my daughter was taking from Houston to Minneapolis blew two tires on takeoff. She had called me for a chat as she was boarding, so when the local TV news (and soon every major cable network) started following the developing story of a Minneapolis-bound plane in trouble, I knew it was hers. Small planes like this one have to burn off fuel in emergencies, so for an hour and a half, I watched my worst nightmare unfold on national television. During this time, I became aware of a “being” sitting to my right on the sofa, really more like a mass of energy that was whirling so fast that it coalesced into a human form — head, arms, legs and torso, brown in color. I could feel it looking at me, but every time I glanced at it, it would look away. I knew intuitively that this was an angel sent for my comfort, to keep me as calm and unafraid as possible. It certainly didn’t look like your typical glorious, bright-white angel, but it radiated love and I knew that if the worst happened, I would be wrapped in its arms for as long as I needed. Angels must have been with the pilots of that plane, too. The landing was smooth as glass and everyone was safe. Weeks later, I told Judie and Debra about this odd little being that had sat there with me on the couch. Yes, they confirmed, it was an angel. But why, they wondered, was it brown? I still don’t know, but I chuckle at my quirky little friend, my little brown angel who carried all the love of the Universe just for me, just in case. a Psychics in the Cities are Judie Randall, Debra Battenfeld and Connie Braton — three Minnesota-based professional psychics who work together as a group. A BRIEF GLANCE…FROM A VIEW of Angel by Lynn Wolf When I first entered this world (as a walk-in), the words repeated to me time after time by angel were: “Remember the Light. Never forget the Light.” The lives of my new parents and siblings were turned upside down with my entrance into their young daughter’s form. And my existence, I believe, would have been unbearable without the protection of the angelic realm. Long before the rise of humankind, angel have traversed the universe and have interacted with many species of intelligence — some still in existence and some now extinct. As teachers, healers, guides and warriors by the direction of their masters (whether a god or another high vibrational being — never a human) they have interacted and interceded in the evolution of life. Angel (they say the correct term for more than one is angel, not angels) are so much more than religion or books by so-called “experts” tend to portray them. They scoff at the idea of being seen as renaissance cherubs. The thought that anyone would believe that angel live to find car keys and parking spaces for human beings annoys a good portion of them. It is usually a person’s spiritual guide or deceased loved one who performs these tasks. And they say people who think angel have no gender or personal agenda are severely blinded by many layers of dogma. Angel can and do appear in very appealing manners to those with whom they interact, and angel can shape shift to almost any form they desire, including that of an animal. They do not believe that most of the human race could comprehend their true form, though they do allude to being likened to looking quite a bit like that of the romantic theatrical views of the Fae and Vampire races, only taller with a radiating countenance. I have personally been privy to be in the presence of warrior angel, and they are magnificently ominous creatures. As an adult, I now serve as a metaphysical advisor. As a spiritual messenger to the human race, I am privileged to communicate with many angel and the mortals with whom they interact. A common question I am asked about angel by my clients is about their deceased loved ones: “Is my departed loved one now an angel?” and I must often answer, “No.” Many people believe that when they or their

loved one passes from this realm, they will somehow be transformed into an angel. The truth is that unless that individual had the spiritual weavings (DNA) of an angel, it would be virtually impossible for them to become an angel when they leave their human form. Angel are a race all of their own with many extraordinary abilities, many of which have been villainized due to a lack of spiritual education and fear instilled by religious beliefs and misunderstandings. Some conspiracy theorists and ufologists believe angel are nothing more than aliens from outer space, that the “greys” are really what one would refer to as angel. According to my angel sources, this just is not so. It seems that angel are not so much outer space aliens as they are immortal inter-dimensional beings that transcend the vibrational trappings of humanity. Whatever one may or may not believe concerning angel, it is quite apparent that the study of them is a lucrative business for authors and spiritual teachers alike. Their very existence upsets and strains the threads of many, if not all, belief systems. As far as they are concerned, the less the human race knows about them, the better it is. And knowing this private side of their race makes me smile to myself, that a few have looked over my shoulder in approval and with a knowing as I type these words. The comings and goings of angel have been documented from the beginning of human acknowledgment. They have been associated with miracles and wonders. They have worked seen and unseen. Angel will continue unto themselves through the rise and fall of humankind. They will exist whether one acknowledges them or not. Angel care not if you believe in them, for they know that they not only exist, they thrive. a Lynn Wolf is a Metaphysical Advisor at The White Lotus Room. A Childhood Experience WITH AN ANGEL by Belva Weston

I was about 5 years old, living in a big old house in Brookings, South Dakota. My brothers and sisters and I were playing outside in the yard. I looked up and saw a young girl floating about two feet off the ground. She had a brighter-thanthe-sun white light around her, and the light seemed to be moving around her.

She seemed to come directly to me, without moving her feet. She told me she wanted a doll like the one I had gotten for Christmas that year. I knew what it was like not to have a doll. Our family was poor. But I pitied her and went inside the house to get my doll. My bedroom was on the second floor, and I took my doll to the open window and dropped

A PROFOUND Angel of Light Itineraries by Efrén Francisco Solanas P.

For 28 years I have vied with the many facets of HIV/AIDS disease. I am grateful for the miracle of my survival. A majority of my peers have been destroyed either by the disease or the drugs used to treat it. I attribute my longevity to my dedication to the healing arts, both as a practitioner and a teacher. I have benefited from many hours inside the energetic crucible of healing. As a wounded healer, my work is to achieve the sacred balance between my vulnerability and sustaining a stable space for others to encounter their own health and spirituality. For 14 years, I resisted my doctor’s admonitions to begin antiviral drugs. The total destruction of my T cells in the year 2000 convinced me to begin medication. (Doctors test T-cell levels to gauge the health of the immune system.) While effective in reducing the viral load, the drugs also spawned horrendous side effects. I was totally debilitated by multiple crises: extreme fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, weight loss and neuropathy. Alone, isolated and losing the will to fight the disease, I dropped into a deep depression. Exhausted on a couch in my home, I closed my eyes and announced, “Thy Will Be Done.” I was willing to accept even death. That night I had a seminal encounter that began with a lucid dream. A tall being of pure, gold light faced me from the foot of my bed. The light was so intense I could not discern facial features or physical detail. A ray of this light traveled from the figure and filled my entire body. I floated up off the bed, ecstatic in a growing radiance. I was held in a space beyond time until my body slowly began to return to rest on the bed and transition to a waking state. The being of light remained and I continued to be bathed in intense, golden radiance. I lay motionless, more relaxed and at peace than I had been for many months. The beam of light slowly dimmed and the figure dissolved. A golden iridescence pulsed throughout my body. My mind was in a state of quiet shock. This encounter with the angelic presence initiated profound physical and psychological improvement, rescuing me from despair,

it out to the ground below. Then I walked out through the kitchen where my mother was. She had told me not to take my toys outside. I picked up the doll from the ground and gave it to the angel. She accepted it with a smile and moved away. I watched her go towards an old abandoned house on our block. I was happy to give her something she had wanted.

suffering, and possibly death. To this day, I remember clearly the sensations of being held during the transmission of light. The experience is deeply imprinted in me. Struggling with the question, “Why did I suffer for so long?” I formed an important link between the moment of surrender and the intervention by the angel of light. My will had been an impenetrable armor; contact had to wait until I softened. Feeling much better, I accepted an invitation to train to teach a healing modality known as The Frequencies of Brilliance. This is a deeply transformational, multi-dimensional technique channeled from the Pleiadians by Christine Day. For the past eight years, I have been teaching certification courses all over the world. The course is performed within sacred geometric spaces that allow contact with higher dimensions and the beings that move in those worlds. One of my gifts is the awareness of these beings as they come through the veils to assist students in the courses. These entities guide me telepathically. What I initially considered an unusual event has now become commonplace. We are frequently visited by ascended masters, angels and beings of light. Contact with spiritual allies is our Divine inheritance, available to anyone willing to dissolve mental barriers and align with the heart. As the vibration of our beloved planet increases, all beings are affected. This transition allows each individual to perceive her sacred path with increased clarity. May the veils dissolve and the light of higher dimensions fill our world, our bodies, inspiring us to deeper levels of love and compassion. I envision a world where we act in frequent concert with the ascended masters and the angels of light. a Efrén Francisco Solanas P. is teacher and practitioner of Senderos de Luz, a combination of powerful multi-dimensional healing modalities. He also leads sacred trekking adventures in the Peruvian Andes. He was born in Southern California and currently makes his home in Minneapolis. I later asked my brothers and sisters if they had seen her. They said no. I’m much older now, and have painted this scene from my memory. a Belva Weston is currently in college working on a degree in Visual Arts. February horoscope: Mercury retrograde prompts insights Star Wisdom by DK Brainard

Mercury is retrograde from February 6 through the end of the month. On the surface, this phenomenon brings communication mix-ups, technical difficulties, and delays. But by injecting discontinuity into the mental landscape, Mercury retrograde also creates space for big insights and paradigm shifts. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)...Your goals are changing, and as you settle into acceptance of what you really want out of life, you’re realizing you may need some new friends. Wouldn’t it be so much easier to walk your path with new people who are glad to let you be you, rather than spending so much energy trying to change the old people? Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)...Slow down there, Bull! An important understanding of who you really are and what you actually need in order to “be a success” is trying to break through this month. But you can’t see the new vision if you’re head-down and furiously plowing the same old furrow. Your friends want to help, so ask them to give you notes — and actually listen to their feedback. Gemini (May 21-June 20)...This Mercury retrograde shows you your personal Big Picture and inspires you to form a new plan. This new vision more closely aligns your career efforts or public image with your spiritual philosophy. It also emphasizes your creativity and your ability to communicate advanced ideas so that even a child could understand them. Cancer (June 21-July 22)...How are you being supported? As long as you keep giving more in the hopes the others will finally reciprocate, you’ll just

get more of the same. Instead, take a good hard look at money and relationships and allow yourself to acknowledge where you’re not getting what you need. There’s plenty out there for you, but you have to claim it. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)...If you could choose all new friends, lovers and business partners, what qualities would you value most? Make a list. Now remember you get what you ask for, not what you deserve. The Full Moon in your sign on the 14th is conspiring to bring new people into your life, including someone with valuable connections. Let go of playing small and step up to your level. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)...You won’t solve your work, health, money or relationship challenge by being more diligent and working harder. What springs you free is a new way of seeing. So many of the rules you’re applying aren’t even valid any more. If you could stop compensating for past failures, you could use your energy to create a life you actually enjoy. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)...Your concept of enjoyment is shifting rather dramatically. You can unleash your creativity and increase your assertiveness simply by allowing yourself to acknowledge all the activities, people and situations that used to please you but no longer inspire. Follow your (current) bliss and watch your anger transform into inspired action. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)...See your ability to be who you want to be in the world as a function of your emotional autonomy. This Mercury retrograde offers you the chance to step off that psychological hamster wheel you’ve been running on since your mom or dad dumped all their crap into you all those years ago. The way up is down and in.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)...A powerful window of opportunity opens this month, enabling you to become aware of and release old, limiting beliefs about yourself and the world. The Universe longs to support you in living out the dream of your life. It’s just waiting for you to heal your thoughts so you can allow in all the abundance it has been holding for you. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)...What if all your ideas about money and success turned out to be more or less arbitrary? What if you really could do what you want in life — and live well doing it — and the only thing holding you back is the belief that you can’t? Or even more pernicious, the belief that for some unfathomable reason, you shouldn’t even want what you want? Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)...One reason life has been moving at such a dreamlike pace is to give you the time and space you need to create a new identity. This new you is less afraid, more creative — and able to not give a damn what people think while remaining passionately engaged with them. Maybe 1 in 50 people possesses genuine, healthy self-esteem. You can be that one. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)...Buy yourself time to rest, dream and live at your own pace. A wellspring of creative power opens at the Pisces New Moon on the 28th. But you can’t use that power until you come to terms with the saboteur inside who is always pushing you to be someone you’re not. Forget fitting in — the world wants your genius, not another unhappy drone. a D.K. February Yoga: Dancer Pose Yoga for YOU by Michelle Ploog

This month’s pose, Natarajasana (“I am love”) or Dancer Pose, is a way for your body to develop balance while opening your heart. A breakthrough moment on my mat was when I began to see the world through the eyes of love or fear rather than through the eyes of right or wrong. The mind wants things to be good or bad, right or wrong, but in the spiritual realm there is only love or the absence of love. Dancer Pose gives us an opportunity to love throughout the process of transformation and the development of balance. Love yourself even when you are falling, and, in turn, learn to love others when they are struggling with their own imbalance. February is associated with love, and I would offer that this month we commit to expressing, listening and seeing each other from a place of unconditional love. Starting in Mountain Pose, extend your left hand to the ceiling. Reach your right hand to the right with a hitchhiker thumb. Shift your weight into your left foot. Pick your right foot up behind you. Stretch your right hand back to the instep or your right foot with the thumb pointing up. If that’s

not accessible, grab the outside of your foot with your thumb pointing down. Press your foot into your right hand as you reach forward and up through your left hand. Keep your left leg straight. Continue to press your sternum forward and your foot up. Breathe. Focus your eyes on a still point in front of you. This is your Drishti. Drishti is an external focus point for your gaze that welcomes internal awareness. Focus your eyes on this one point. Take 10 slow, deep breaths. If you stumble out of the pose, get back in and start counting from your last breath. Release the pose. Center yourself in Mountain Pose for a few breaths. Observe your body, thoughts, and breath. Discover Dancer Pose on the other side. Release into Mountain Pose with your palms pressed together over your heart. Take five breaths, repeating the mantra “I am love.” a Michelle Ploog is an ERYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher) certified in Kripalu Yoga and Baptiste Power Yoga that inspires students to live a life of passion and purpose. There are many recipes for a pot roast, but I chose this one based on its simplicity of ingredients and its adaptability to cooking methods, especially the crockpot. Make this delicious meal while you’re at work or sleeping! If you prefer, fresh herbs can be substituted for dry. As a point of reference, substitute 1 TBS of fresh herb for 1 tsp of dried herb.

words of wisdom by Nadine Penny Forgive and forget this February as you wipe the slate clean, let go of the past (and your pain) and focus on a future that is happy, healthy and whole. Marianne Williamson says, “The practice of forgiveness is our most important contribution to the healing of the world!” That’s because forgiveness frees us from hurt and from the person who caused it, for healing that uplifts us mind, body and spirit. Dr. Fred Luskin (Forgive for Good) agrees. His research found that when we forgive, our stress level halves and our energy, mood and sleep improve, too. So proffer the olive branch this Valentine’s and fill your life with compassion, understanding and love. a Nadine Penny attained her M.A. from the University of Denver in Counseling Psychology. Nadine lives in Minnetonka where she works as a medium, life issues reader and Reiki master. Contact her by email at nadine.penny@gmail.com and visit www.nadinepenny.com. Copyright © 2014.
