Removing synthetic chemicals from our food, lives is vital for health Isn’t it time to find sustainable replacements before it’s too late? From the Editor

by Tim Miejan Over the years, corporations have saved substantial amounts of money by replacing natural materials with plastic and other synthetic chemicals, and the result has been cheaper goods for all of us. But the question that must be raised now is whether we have sacrificed too much in the process. If you think about it, you might join me by saying yes. It’s true that soda manufactures no longer have to fill glass bottles with soda, distribute them to the market and then clean and refill the same bottles once consumers return their used bottles. What a difficult and time-consuming process that once was. Now, they merely sell us pop in cheap plastic bottles and let us throw them away wherever we want. Simple. Of course, we all want to pay as little for products as possible, without sacrificing quality. Soda pop seems to taste just as good stored in plastic and aluminum as it does in glass. Or perhaps we’ve quickly adapted to the taste of plastic? Back in 2007, I reviewed a film called King Corn, a documentary that explored the government’s role in vastly expanding the amount of corn we grow and the number of industrial farms growing it. What the filmmakers revealed was that our escalating consumption of corn (in myriad products, especially high-fructose corn syrup) has adversely affected our health. I suggest the same might be said of plastics and other chemicals that are now being used in connection with the production of food and other products we interact with daily. “I sometimes think that there is a maligning force loose in the universe that is the social equivalent of cancer, and it’s plastic. It infiltrates everything. It’s metastasis. It gets into

every single pore of productive life.” —Norman Mailer, Harvard Magazine, 1983 Who can say that petrochemical molecules are not leeching into our food supply through bottles and containers? Who can say that the spikes in cancer and autism and other conditions are not related to the decision by corporations to significantly expand our exposure to plastics and other petro- and agri-chemicals? The introduction of plastics was a huge innovation for corporations, saving them a lot of money. Have you forgotten that scene in the 1967 film The Graduate in which Benjamin is mingling poolside with his family friends? Mr. McGuire offers a word of advice to the new high school graduate on career opportunities: Mr. McGuire: I just want to say one word to you. Just one word. Benjamin: Yes, sir. Mr. McGuire: Are you listening? Benjamin: Yes, I am. Mr. McGuire: Plastics. Benjamin: Exactly how do you mean?

Heather Rogers, in her book Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage, tells us that the plastics industry and the U.S. government “dispute any connection between synthetics and health problems....” But can we trust them? Over the past three days, I watched every play of baseball’s American League Championship Series in the Toronto dome now called Rogers Centre. Its cushy-almostshag-carpet-feeling astroturf is made of crumb rubber, as you could see on every play. Whenever the ball bounced along the turf, small black rubber pellets flew up into the air. Whenever players dove to make a play, small black rubber pellets flew up into the air. Multiple reports by Stephanie Gosk on NBC News have chronicled an escalating number of cancer cases in young soccer players allegedly related to crumb rubber turf, artificial playing surfaces used for soccer, football, baseball and other sports made from recycled rubber from auto and truck tires. These pellets contain mercury, lead, benzene and arsenic, and other hazardous chemicals, according to the EPA, which will not talk about the safety of the material. No study has examined the effects of regular exposure to shredded or crumb rubber on young children, over an extended period of time — something some experts believe should be done, according to an NBC report on October 1. Some communities are now opponents of crumb rubber field turf, just as more fast food companies are replacing Styrofoam containers with cardboard. But these examples are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how synthetic chemicals have infiltrated our collective health. These are just a few examples of how corporations have found ways to replace safe materials, like glass and natural turf, with chemical products to reap huge profits. What will turn the tide? The public’s rejection of artificial anything. I don’t even like artificial smiles. a Tim Miejan is editor and co-publisher of The Edge. Contact him at 651.578.8969 or email editor@edgemagazine.net. Invisible Walls

by Alfonso Santillana Invisible walls corral each verse, hallways built out of concepts and beliefs. No clear-cut lies; no truthful pilasters. An egocentric life overlook; constricts my bearing to a narrow point of view. Confines my self to a measurement of age and longitude. Ancestral traditions are bricking up this argument, placing word upon word they imprison my soul inside these glassy walls. Some are grammatically ruled like gender and tense, other culturally breastfed like country, God and race; but those dividing us by place like you and I, us and them are the tyrant source of pain, because no man can tell a river that is a billion drops of rain. I surrender my voice to the voice of the common good; to wreck these invisible walls so my divisions can be cured; so my naked soul could stretch to each cardinal latitude; and unable to tell where I end and where your body starts, this poem would rise up like coming away from you. a Alfonso Santillana was born in Lima, Peru, in the Spring of 1982. This is his second collection of poems, and his first in English. He is currently pursuing his B.A. in Law and Political Science. He is married and resides in Miami, Florida. Copyright © 2015. Spiritual wisdom on relationships by Sri Harold Klemp Soul yearns to return home to God. Home to God means the area of supreme divine love that has no conditions attached to it: unconditional love. So often when we speak of love in a human sense, we don’t see the difference. Sometimes our parents say they love us, and then if we don’t do things exactly their way, they’ll give us the cold shoulder. Or our mate might do this, or we might do this to our mate. Giving someone the cold shoulder is not unconditional love. It’s conditional. And it’s a form of control. It’s not true love at all. It’s saying, “I want to do it this way, and you’re not doing it my way. So until you do it my way, I’m not going to love you. I’m not going to talk to you.” It’s conditional love. It’s human love, not divine love. And human love is people’s attempt to be godlike, whether or not they’re conscious of it. I think it is very important in this life to learn to love someone more than yourself — whether it’s another person or a pet. And before you can love someone else more than yourself, you begin by first loving yourself. Even Christ said, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Right away some people think this means love your neighbor and forget all about yourself. Loving yourself doesn’t mean to have a high, egotistical regard for yourself or go strutting around like some dictator. It means to have respect for yourself as Soul, as a child of God — or as we say in ECK, as a light of God. Because

once you recognize yourself as Soul, as one of these beings of God, you’ve made an important step in your spiritual unfoldment. The next important step is to know and recognize that other people are also Soul, lights of God. Love is the goal, then, of our spiritual search. The way to God is ever within the heart, within the loving heart. A spiritual exercise

Try this simple spiritual exercise to help deepen your relationship with God: Go somewhere quiet. Sit or lie down in a comfortable place. Put your attention on your Spiritual Eye, a point just above and behind your eyebrows. With eyes lightly shut, begin to sing a holy word or phrase, such as HU, God, Holy Spirit, or “Show me thy ways, O Lord.” But fill your heart with love before you approach the altar of God, because only the pure may come. Be patient. Do this exercise for several weeks, for a limit of 20 minutes each time. Sit, sing and wait. God speaks to you only when you are able to listen. a Sri Harold Klemp, spiritual leader of Eckankar, has authored more than 100 books. His inspiring and practical approach to spirituality helps many thousands of people worldwide find greater love, wisdom, and freedom. You can see him every Friday night, 7-7:30 p.m., on MCN channel-6 TV. “Relationships and Spiritual Growth” is the worship-service topic for Sunday, Nov. 1, from 10-11 a.m., at the Temple of ECK in Chanhassen, the worldwide center for the Eckankar teachings. 4-18, from 7-8:30 p.m., at the Temple. What I had at one time perceived as a void filled me— this was the breath of life, these were the vibrations that carried me to the flesh of my being;

carried me by the undulation of energy, matter upon which my movement twisted the fabric of existence creating a cosmos of opalescent symphonies an all-consuming silvery expression of prayer, each verse more complex than the previous as adjoining waves bore into each other.

Self-empowerment with the Akashic Records by Angela Blaha The Akashic records have many names. Some refer to the records as the Conscious Mind or Cosmic Mind, while others refer to the Akashic Records as The Book of Life, the Eye of God or The Word of God. References to the Akashic records date back to antiquity. The Book of Life can be found in folklore, in myth and the Old and New testaments. It is traceable to the Semitic peoples who believed in a celestial tablet that contained the history of human kind and spiritual information. The Akashic records are the personal file of each soul. Akasha is a Sanskrit word meaning “ether” or “primary substance” out of which all things are formed. The word Akasha is from two ancient Tibetan or northern Indian words — “Aka” meaning space, a storage place or repository, and “Sa” meaning sky, hidden or secret. The Akashic records are an unseen space or storage space — a dimension of consciousness that is not physically seen in the world in which we live, yet we know it exists. This existence is a vibrational form or level of the soul and it is accessed through our vibration of words, meditation or symbols. This vibrational energy of complete balance represents all the elements of earth, air, water, fire, sun, moon and love. It also represents the universal inner space of wisdom. The Akashic records are the etheric/ether

field that surrounds us. They are everywhere and can be accessed by everyone. This ether is where the collective consciousness resides. The records are a comprehensive edition of who you are from the inception of your soul until infinity. With this knowledge then, we accept the understanding of the concept of reincarnation and the fact that all souls are eternal. Pioneers of Wisdom

Along the way, an abundance of information on the Akashic records has been revealed. Two mystics, H.P. Blavatsky and Rudolf Steiner, were early pioneers who possessed the ability to perceive information beyond the material world. Edgar Cayce popularized the Akashic records with his uncanny ability to enter an altered state and access many types of information. He did so with accuracy and his works can be found in hundreds of books, biographies and other types of recordings. November horoscope

The Power of Knowing Lunar Adventures

by Kathie Anderson The New Moon in Scorpio, on November 11, will allow us to see through the veil between the worlds, helping us to uncover information, and then the Full Moon in Gemini, on November 25, will illuminate our buried treasures. Neptune also goes direct this month, on November 18, after being retrograde for five months. Do not allow Neptune moving direct to deny the information that you uncover at the New Moon. Instead, use the energy to see the ideal beauty in all of life, and be grateful for the knowledge. Thank your lucky stars! Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Your challenge this month is to develop better self-control and be more compromising. If you experience conflict within a relationship, look below the surface, first, to better understand the motives of you and your partner. Then be courageous, and let your partner know how you feel. Intimacy will be the reward. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Establishing a safe, secure, stable and comfortable work environment is important to you, so you may find yourself getting to know your co-workers on a deeper level. Chances are that your talents and skills are appreciated, and that you are well-liked and respected, which could increase your income. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Now is the time to focus on your own well-being and schedule a checkup, research ways to improve your health and/or start a new health regimen. This also would be an excellent time to do rebirthing therapy. Intense emotions could come to the surface, this month, but that’s okay. Experience them, and then release them. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…At the New Moon, you’ll probably want to be out painting the town red; but at the Full Moon, you’ll probably want to be at home painting the walls red, or some other color. Wherever you are, express your passion. Let your creative juices flow, especially when it comes to renovating and redecorating your home. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…It’s time to look within to determine your future goals. Reflect on your position in the world, and listen to your intuition when researching speculative ventures. At the Full Moon, be the voice of authority. Share your ideas with others. You will be able to express them well, at this time. Be careful, however, of joint financial ventures. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…If you would like a new job, send out cover letters and resumes at the beginning of the month. You will be good at researching, writing and multi-tasking, at this time. At the end of the month, promote yourself! Tell others about your

accomplishments! Employers will want you, and only you, for the job! Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…What faraway place have you been dreaming about visiting? Now is a great time to plan and purchase a surprise romantic adventure over the Thanksgiving holiday for you and your sweetie! Stimulate your senses by exploring a foreign culture together. Your love affair could be brought to a deeper level, by sharing the experience. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…What would you like to transform in your life? You have the opportunity, right now, to make a major changes in how you express yourself to others! Take some time to reflect upon your desires, and then plant them like pomegranate seeds in the underworld by writing them down. Sweet, juicy fruit will grow from your intentions! Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…Like the lyrics in Kenny Rogers song, The Gambler, “You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em, know when to walk away and know when to run,” in regards to a partnership. You need to balance assertion with compromise, now. Watch what you say, and make sure you’re open and honest, and you will gain the recognition and rewards that you desire. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)…You could experience healing this month. To do so, however, you need to explore the underworld and face your demons. Once you’ve made contact with your fears, transform them with affirmations, or positive beliefs. It also would be advantageous for you to join a group that can support you on your journey. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…Let go of the past — and embrace the future! It is possible to break out of your normal routine this month and start a new career or life path! You’ll have opportunities to express your unique Self, like speaking, writing or teaching gigs, and you’ll have the power to do it. Unleash your enthusiasm for what you love to do! Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…The meaning of the term “radical” is going to the root of origin and forming a basis or foundation. It’s time to take a radical stance, and journey to the core of your spiritual beliefs, as well as make spirituality the heart of your existence, because it will provide you with a foundation and balance in your life. a Kathie Anderson, M.A., C.C.H.T., R.M.T., is a healer, astrologer and writer who guides others to reach their highest potential through her private practice, Lunar Adventures. Soup or chili for that chilly day Food First

by Nutrition Julie As the weather gets colder, nothing’s better than a big pot of soup or chili. (Well, except maybe a big pot of chili, a handmade quilt and a lap cat, too!) In any case, having that soup or chili ready for you to eat and filling the house with wonderful smells when you arrive home is an extra bonus! I love to make this Vegetarian Chili in my crockpot and have it ready after work and between the kids’ extracurricular events. Toss a quick side salad together and you have a nice, quick, nutritious meal that everyone will love.

Slow Cooker Vegetarian Chili with Quinoa 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 1 poblano pepper, seeded and diced 1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 (28 oz.) can Fire Roasted diced tomatoes 1 (28 oz.) can water 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce 2 (15 oz.) cans chili beans 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 tablespoon cumin 1 tablespoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon coriander 1-2 teaspoons Himalayan salt (more or less to taste) 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (more or less to taste) 2 cups cooked quinoa Add all ingredients to a slow cooker, minus the quinoa, and turn on high. After 2-3 hours, turn the crock pot down to low and keep covered for another 4-6 hours. (Alternately, you could just leave the slow cooker on low for 8 hours). Before you’re ready to serve, remove the lid and turn back to high for another 30 minutes. Stir in the quinoa, taste and adjust seasonings, and serve. — Recipe from Queen of Quinoa a Nutrition Julie is a Certified Holistic Health Coach and Raw Food Nutrition Educator who is passionate about Nutrition, Health and Wellness. An Interview with

Ashana on the Open Heart Holiday Concert by Tim Miejan

Sound of the Ete r n a l Every one of us, at some point in our lives, has heard a sound that has moved our soul to tears. That experience is where classically trained singer, performer, recording artist, songwriter and teacher Ashana lives. ¶ This incredible sound artist has spent the past decade exploring the healing nature of sound through her evolving relationship with quartz crystal singing bowls, and this conversation with her explores that partnership she enjoys with sound. Ashana has received international acclaim for her CD recordings All Is Forgiven, Jewels of Silence, Beloved, The Infinite Heart and The Illuminated Path. Her groundbreaking new CD, River of Light, is the first full-length Kundalini Yoga Mantra album ever to be recorded. Her music is featured in the documentary film The Sound You Feel: Vibrations of Healing. She will make her first visit to Minneapolis to present the Open Heart Holiday Concert, a rare musical experience that will expand your loving essence and magnify it with the sharing of that experience with others. She will be joined by special guest Sean Finkel on flute and guitar, and sacred readings will be presented by author, speaker and peace seeker Joan Steffend and Dr. Patricia Lawler, clinical director of Holly House Center for Integrated HealthCare in St. Paul and sponsor of the concert. “Today’s world is a world that is sometimes short on compassion and love not only for our brothers and sisters around the globe but for all life and for the earth itself,” says Dr. Lawler. “We can even find it difficult to feel compassion for ourselves. The intention of this event is to respond to this lack by summoning healing for both the world and for ourselves.” The concert will take place from 3-5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at Jeanne D’Arc Auditorium, located on the campus of St. Catherine University. Tickets are available at Openheartconcert.eventbrite.com.

It is no accident that the Open Heart Holiday concert has arisen at this time. Ashana spoke at length, at the beginning of our conversation, about the need for all of us to be supported in returning to that silence within where we can connect with our true essence — and how much of a challenge that is for people now. We spoke two days after the mass shootings at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. “The trending is that people are not satisfied,” Ashana said. “They’re not getting the answers they need. The tried and true ways of doing things aren’t working for a lot of people anymore. I think that’s because of the immensity of information and the intensity of the speed that things are happening now. A lot of people have been taken completely off of their center. People feel overwhelmed, confused and traumatized. “We just experienced another mass shooting. I heard an interview with President Obama about how distressed he was, saying that he can’t stand the fact that he has to come on and talk about this every few months. “My husband (a Native Hawaiian healer) and I were invited to Sandy Hook about four to six weeks after that shooting happened to work with the community and offer a healing session for people there. Many people went there to lend   Ashana

continued from p. 13 their support, and we were just among those who offered a helping hand. My husband continues to go back there regularly to work with people in the community. We know personally, three years later, that people are still suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because of that event. “These events are becoming so much more commonplace, and people are being challenged on so many levels. People are looking for therapy, alternative modalities, guidance and support to find their center, to find that place of balance within themselves, to find that place inside where they can experience their own peace and their personal connection to whatever you want to call it, whether it is the Higher Power, Divine Guidance, Divine Intelligence, God, Goddess. The name we call it doesn’t matter. People are seeking that eternal source of comfort, of wisdom, of love, that never dies and never goes away. It’s always present. “This is just my opinion, but because we’ve gotten so overwhelmed, we don’t know how to find that anymore — in the same way. We need places to learn how to slow down so we can be ourselves. When we can find that, when we can relax, so many things happen from that place, when we settle down and go inside, quiet our nervous system, quiet our body and begin the process of quieting the mind. That’s the place where healing happens. That’s the place where we find our guidance about what our next steps are. That’s the place where we can sit inside our own questions and find our answers. “That’s a huge and tremendous part of the work that I do with my music. The music that I do with the crystal singing bowls and the sounds that come out of them allow people to move into a state where there is no pain, where the mind simply begins to go quiet. It’s really extraordinary, and it’s incredibly comforting. It’s incredibly heart opening.” Ashana then shared about the origins of her love of singing.

When did you realize that you loved to sing and wanted to do more of it? Ashana: I was singing since I was a very little

girl. It was a part of my expression as a little one. And I can never stop. It’s only deepened. It’s a gift I have been given — and it’s also been probably my most powerful teacher. What has it taught you? Ashana: Singing has been a spiritual path,

not necessarily as a religion, but as a life purpose and a life direction that has challenged me to my very core and expanded me beyond what I thought was possible when I first started. Back then, I couldn’t have imagined where I would be with sound and vibration and music and singing. I didn’t even have a clue about any of that when I first started taking my music and my singing seriously. I followed my music intuitively. There was a part of my personality that wanted to prove myself — and be seen — in the years starting out in college, in conservatory, in the competitive environment of New York City. My music was tied into getting a lot of attention, because I would get it! I loved performing. That’s the nature of being a performing artist. And so over the years, I had to look at all of that and find a place inside of myself where, gradually, it became my intention that it was important for me to be an authentic person through my music, through my singing, through my teaching, through my life expression. That became more important to me than the performing, than the acceptance and the approval. And, of course, when you reach a certain age — I’m in my 50s now — it becomes more important to be fully congruent as a human, the best that I can in a given moment. And then, as I began watching what my music began offering to people, I realized that not only was I able to express myself artistically, but I was in a place where I was deeply in service. When I began singing, I didn’t think I was in service to my audience. I was there

not just to do a good job, but hopefully I would touch people’s hearts and give them an experience of beauty, of love, of comfort, of drama, of passion. I was in service to that. But when I really shifted and moved into what I call my dharma, my soul path of music and sound, it opened up in a completely different way. Then all of a sudden, I was in service to people, to facilitate for them and to hold a space for them where they could connect with their own Divinity, where they could connect with their own Light. Through the music and through the sounds I would make, they would find that place inside of themselves that was real and was true and eternal. And inside of that space, they would be more in touch with that essential, beautiful core of their preciousness than before. Just the presence of that music would facilitate and hold that place and that connection for them. There were benefits for people that I never dreamed of, when they would hear the music and the song and different things would happen for them. I haven’t thought of this in a long time, but this is something that happened. I did a concert in Mt. Shasta, California, a few years ago. A woman came in and she was in a wheelchair because she had a broken pelvis in 12 places. She had been in chronic pain for years. In the intermission, she was standing up and came to talk with me. I saw her the next day and she was in a walker, walking down the street. She greeted me with a huge smile on her face. It was the first time she had been out of the wheelchair in I don’t know how long. Was it the music and the sound that did it? She was ready for that, to make some kind of shift. That space of that sound, the immensity of that love that comes through those sounds, that comes through those songs, that comes through the group chanting and singing experiences that happened in a lot in the concerts I did — all of that came together to take her to that place where she could make a shift. I know that’s a dramatic example, but   Ashana

Open Hearts

An interview with Dr. Patricia Lawler of Holly House Center for Integrated HealthCare by Tim Miejan A most unique event will take place December 6 when a Twin Cities-based health care center will present a concert by noted performer, crystal bowl musician and singer Ashana with the intention of opening your heart. Inspiration for the concert came to Patricia Lawler, DC, DACBN, CTN, DCBCN, clinical director of Holly House Center for Integrated HealthCare in St. Paul. Dr. Lawler has practiced chiropractic and natural health care since 1977. She has advanced training and/or certification in neurology, clinical nutrition, naturopathy and bioenergetic techniques, including neuromodulation technique, NAET, KST, acupuncture and Reiki. She is dedicated to the advancement of human consciousness and the awareness of God. She shared with The Edge about the concert and what she hopes it will offer the community. What inspired you to create the Open Heart Holiday Concert? Dr. Patricia Lawler: Your question takes

me back to the fact that I have long been a student of the writings of Dr. David Hawkins, psychiatrist, speaker and author of Power vs. Force. That’s where the creation of the Open Heart Concert began for me. Hawkins developed an awareness of levels of openness to God, which he called calibration levels. He eventually created what is called The Map

of Consciousness. It was a tool that enabled us, through Muscle Response Testing, to determine the current level of “Openness to God” for an individual or group. I began to use this in my clinical work to help people understand spiritual challenges they might experience in a given period of time. In the summer of 2014, I began to notice that some of my friends and clients began to drop on that scale. Previously, most everyone was continuing to gradually go up on the scale. The drops in calibration concerned me. With prayer, I understood this process as not necessarily a bad thing, in the bigger picture of the spiritual transformation that is occurring, but nevertheless, a difficult time. Out of that concern for those who were struggling with the transition, my guidance encouraged me to develop an event called The Open Heart Prayer Gathering. A co-facilitator joined me and we began to hold the event seasonally. Early this past spring, after a meeting with my co-facilitator, I experienced a nudge from Grace. As I closed my eyes, I saw a multimedia/multi-artist event designed to open people’s hearts to Grace (God). It was quite a large event and the vision of it was rather daunting. I did feel that the event was to happen in 2015. With that in mind, given timing and previous commitments on my part, I begged off the large multimedia event, and focused   Open

from p. 14 almost every time I do a concert people come up to me afterwards and say words to the effect that “what you just did changed my life.” Why is that? Because inside of that concert experience — the crystal bowls and the love and the chanting and the singing, all of that — there is a place where we go, all of us on stage, and we hold a space for everyone who is there, people who are ready for a heart-opening experience of love. And I know inside that experience of love is forgiveness. Inside that love is a release of the trauma or contraction that we hold in our bodies, in our psyches, in our emotions. It’s because of all of that contraction that we experience pain, suffering, disease and an inability to move forward. All of that is part of the human experience, but there is another part of the human experience that is expansive, that is in balance, and that experience can be anchored in a heart that is open and allowing. Those experiences include the feeling of connection, the feeling of the simplicity of love in all of its forms, of compassion, of kindness, of healing. It’s a place where there is mercy and understanding. That’s the service that my music has led me to. So from an artist of 15, 18, 20, doing all the things that I did back then, where I was very “me” centered, I have shifted to a place where I am holding a space for the collective, for the many. That’s been a huge transition for me. So I answered your question in a long way, but that’s what my music has done for me. And in the course of that, everything in my life changed. Everything. And I had to dig really deep — and I have to continue to dig really deep — inside of myself to do the work of learning how to stay connected within myself, to learn where I am in resistance, to discover where I am allowing. I’m going through my stuff just like everybody else. And you do all of that to remain in service through your music? Ashana: I don’t do it because of that. I do

it because I have to. I’m compelled to. Just like everyone else, I find places inside of me where I go, “Wow, I don’t particularly like this aspect of how I do things, so how can I be with that part of me and love that, too? How can I be more loving towards myself?” The whole process of working on my own life — because of how I do my music — in some really beautiful way becomes a very big part of the gift that I give other people. I’m a living example of what it is to walk through that stuff.

What led you to the quartz crystal singing bowls, and how do you feel when you are making them sing? Ashana: I think it was a soul gift, to tell you

the truth. It really was like destiny. I was

living in Española, New Mexico, at the time. I had a spiritual mentor at the time, and one day she called me up and said, “Have you ever heard of a crystal singing bowl.” I said, “No.” And she said, “These are right up your alley. I’m going to order one for you.” I said, “OK.” I didn’t have a clue what they were, and I don’t think I even looked them up on the Internet. Sure. Sign me up. I’m in. Three weeks later I received this ginormous box. It was the classic, whitefrosted singing bowl, the first generation of the kind of bowls that I currently use. So the bowl arrived, and it was double boxed and there was a mountain of peanuts, because obviously it was pretty fragile. So I took the bowl out and it was 14 inches, pretty honkin’ big. I put it on the kitchen table, and I picked up the mallet they provided with it. I didn’t read any of the instructions. I chimed the side of the bowl, and I promptly burst into tears. And I had two thoughts in that instant. The first thought was that Light had come to live in my house. And the second thought that I had was that one day I would mold these sounds into music. It took six years for that to happen. In three weeks after receiving that first bowl, I had seven — and I never looked back. I worked with them myself and then I began doing public meditations. For two years I took them with me to different places and played them for people. I never charged for it. I gifted people with the sound. And then my mentor at the time said, “OK, it’s time to start actually using these on a more professional level.” So I began offering meditations, classes and workshops. I was singing with them and improvising with them, but I hadn’t put them into music at that time. In 2005 when I met my producer, there was an incredible synchronicity of events. It was a very magical and amazing time. I sent him a piece of music of me improvising with the bowls, and when he heard it, he said if he were to point me in any direction, it would be in new age music. It surprised me — and yet it didn’t surprise me. I thought I was going to do something completely different when I got into the recording studio. After about three days, I was so agitated and said, “We can’t continue doing what we’re doing. I need to put the big bowls into music.” And my producer laughed and he smiled at me and said, “Great. What key?” And I said, “B sharp.” And an hour and a half later, we had recorded the “Ave Maria,” which is probably my most well-known song and it’s heard all over the world. It’s been extraordinary. That piece has been on NPR, on compilation albums of sacred songs of Mary, in films. I really know what it means to take a leap of faith, when we’re willing to take the risk

— and just jump, and you don’t know where you’re going to jump — and that’s exactly what happened: my soul, my spirit, was at that place where it recognized that the way I had been doing things was not working and I just had to explode out of my old way and into a new way. That first album, called All is Forgiven, catapulted me into an entirely new phase of my life. That was the place where my music finally resulted in things happening to people when they listened to it. And it hasn’t stopped. What pieces will you be presenting at the Open Heart Holiday Concert? Ashana: I will be singing the “Ave Maria,”

because I was asked to do that and it is one of the favorites. I’ll probably be singing a piece called “Opening to Love,” from my second album Beloved. I will be doing improvisational pieces with the crystal singing bowls so people will receive a direct transmission from the bowls, without any vocals. I’ll also probably be doing a little bit of Christmas music because it’s that part of the beautiful, holiday season. So much of the music that I sang for years — such an innate part of my spirit — are these very old, traditional, Medieval and Renaissance carols, some of which people are quite familiar and some of which are quite obscure. I sang them for decades and they’re very near and dear to my heart. So I’ll probably do a little bit of that, because it’s the holiday season and I don’t get to do that very often anymore. It’s going to be beautiful! You sing prayers, chants, songs and mantras. What is the common thread between all of the works that you perform? Ashana: Every chant, every mantra, every song that I’ve chosen to work with can be

a bridge for people to find that resonance that helps bring them into that oneness connection with their heart and with their soul. And I choose music or write music where I find that resonance within myself. And what I’ve experienced — and it’s just the nature of my own spirit — is that I have deep connections with many spiritual lineages. I have a deep connection with Tibetan and Hindu Sanskrit, with Hebrew, with Native American chant, with Sufi, with Sikh and the Gurbani, and deep connections with Christian chant. For me, my own experience is that the absolute essence of every single spiritual path — that absolute core essence — is the same. That essence leads us when we strip away any dogma and go straight to the spirituality of something. It leads us to love. I think we can lose ourselves in the structure of a religious practice. But when we get lost, we get to find our way back. Every practice that I’ve either experienced   Ashana

Hearts from p. 15 on a simplified, at least for this initial event, version. What led you to select Ashana to perform? PL: Even with the vision of

the original multimedia/ multi-artist event, I always saw Ashana performing. I had been introduced to her music several years ago. A friend brought me a CD. I popped it into my player as I drove to the clinic one day, and my heart simply burst for joy. I thought to myself, “This woman is singing for God.” That’s my kind of music.

How do you feel when you hear the creations by Ashana? PL: Listening to Ashana is

a simple, yet very complex, experience for me. She weaves such a tapestry from different systems of belief and calls forth different aspects of my spiritual experiences in this life. Grace sings through her music. For myself, I sometimes feel her music ignites a child-like delight within me, for the simple love of God, being held in God’s embrace, completely safe. I am that little girl going through my first communion; all dressed up in a beautiful little white dress, and completely committed to God and the angels. I contrast that with my experience to the complexity of exquisite sound in a piece such as “Ave Maria,”

sung in Latin, from her album All is Forgiven, which elicits a sense of awe or hush of a great cathedral, or the tugging of my heart with the Indian instrumentation in some of the pieces on her recording Jewels of Silence, reminiscent of my pursuit of God in college years. These pieces take me through all the nuances of spiritual music from my past, but then they infuse those memories with the immediacy of the present — the powerful need to release my resistance and embrace Grace completely, in this moment. It encourages me to walk with an Open Heart. The experience of her music reminds me of a lesson from A Course of Miracles: “The hush of heaven holds my heart today.” Why is the concert named Open Heart? PL: To me, an open heart is

ultimately a heart that is open to the Grace of God. Such a heart is on a good and sacred path. It is open to love, it is open to healing. It is, I believe, our ultimate path to take on this earth journey. So there is an intention to this concert. It is one of spiritual and physical healing through beauty of sound, beauty of the written word, and healing vibration of the bowls and instrumentation. All these open the heart. I believe that healing does not need to stop after the concert. I believe,

if we manifest this concert to the best of our ability with a completely open heart, it will continue to profoundly impact each person who attends. What are the keys to opening the heart — and keeping it open? PL: First of all, you must have

a strong intention to develop and maintain an open heart. That intention comes from understanding its power to change your life. It is not an easy path, and yet I believe it is your most natural state of being. Once this intention is made, it can be repeated daily, to reinforce the intention. My co-facilitator of the Open Heart Prayer Gathering, Jackie, meditates daily in the morning on keeping an open heart, and she recommends the use of a small heart to carry with you, to reinforce your intention throughout the day. Once that intention is established, you must develop a strong inner observer to transform states of being that are not consistent with developing and maintaining an open heart. The observer is part of your conscious awareness that watches for the presence of emotional states of pride, anger, irritation, frustration, fear, chronic grief, apathy, guilt or shame. Then the observer compassionately helps you find the path to transmute them to forgiveness, compassion, and/ or gratitude.

Lastly, you must develop the habit of encouragement of open heart states. This will help you make the transition from a closed or partially closed heart to an open heart. Work with intention on your capacity for forgiveness, compassion, appreciation of all life, gratitude and being in a loving heart. It is as simple as learning to take time to “Smell the roses.” Watch for the beauty that is all around you. These are all attributes of one with an open heart. Spend time in the morning or evening in reflection by journaling. Build awareness and an appreciation of your growth in development of these helpful states of being. Each day presents itself as a new opportunity to more fully be of open heart. Sometimes events can challenge our open heart, such as the recent shootings at the college in Oregon or those at the church in Charleston. These are shocking and sad events. During such times, we must keep our heart open, since it may start to close from fear, anger or grief. Other times, your greatest challenge to maintain an open heart might come from a reaction to your spouse, your children, or to the loss of one of your parents. One of my patients began to experience so much fear when her pet began to age and become ill. Those with whom we have such strong   Open

from p. 16 or learned about — whether it’s an ultra orthodox Jewish person, a monk in the desert hills or monastery, or an ascetic in the Himalayas — the soul is looking for that experience of itself as eternal — that knowingness, and being able to remember that, in physical form, in this consciousness, in this present moment. So all the chants and songs and mantras that I do are reflected in my own experience of that sound current as a resonance that reminds me of that. I say all of that, and what I’ll do is take it one step further. When I go to the crystal singing bowls — where there’s no chant and no mantra, just the sound of the bowls — that, to me, is the sound of pure, tone frequency. That, to me, is the sound of absolute expansion that goes beyond any chant or any mantra, that goes beyond any construct that my mind can put on it, and it goes into the experience of pure vibration of pure light and pure sound. When I hear that, that is the sound of the Eternal. Do you have any closing thoughts to share with our readers? Ashana: Only that I’m really

looking forward to being in Minneapolis. It will be our first trip there. I just invite people to come, regardless of their religious persuasions or spiritual background. Everybody is going to find something at this concert that will help them, support them and engage them in connecting with their own heart and the love that they are. I welcome all people. Hearts from p. 17 emotional ties will provide us great opportunities to develop and keep an open heart. For whom is the Open Heart Holiday Concert intended? PL: The concert is intended for all those persons

who already love the Divine (God). The concert will be a wonderful celebration of that love. It is also intended for those who feel they have lost their way or have fallen off the path, or who find themselves angry, sad or fearful too often. We plan that it will help them open up their hearts once again. It is intended for those who are in physical or emotional pain and need the soothing balm of divinely inspired song, sacred word, crystalline healing vibration of the bowls and heart-opening flute and strings. It also is for those who seek community in Grace, or want to be refreshed in a direct experience of Grace, by renewing their commitment in their own religious communities. Children 12 years or older may have a powerful experience, as well. We are not recommending younger children attend, however, in that it is their nature to wiggle and run about. They probably would not want to sit through the concert.

How does this event reflect what you offer at Holly House? PL: Our work at Holly House has long focused

on a holistic model. The transformational time in which we now find ourselves contributes to

the need for physical, emotional and spiritual support as the level of intensity of the spiritual energy being experienced increases and often stresses our bodies. We have found a combination of functional, structural and consciousness — or spiritual medicine — to be the best approach to help people not only heal their physical and emotional wounds, but to better adapt to the stress on their biological systems from these increased spiritual energies. Supportive work ranges from making sure people are structurally aligned so that their neurological systems can work at their best, to blood analysis to see if their diet and overall health is optimal, to helping a person release chronic anxiety through bioenergetic therapies. I know we have all experienced or heard stories about the importance of love in a person’s life. It has the power to completely eradicate a disease. I have experienced the power of love and an open heart in the clinic. This concert event honors our belief in the power of love and an open heart and represents our strong commitment to consciousness/spiritual medicine. a For more information on Holly House Center for Integrated HealthCare, call 651.645.6951 or visit www.hollyhouse.org Tim Miejan is editor and co-publisher of The Edge. Navigating the shift from illusion to truth A Pleiadian Message

by Christine Day Beloved ones, we greet you. We witness you at this sacred transitional time on your planet. We work with those of you who call us forward for support. We honor each one of you as you move through your moments of human experience of separation, and then open beyond the veil into aligning to moments of Truth. You are only here for a very short time, a moment really in relationship to our timeless experience within the Universe. You are here to achieve and understand this powerful transformation within you, and then you return to your place within the Collective Consciousness. Honor your time here and your experiences. Love, laugh and let go as you move through your series of life teachings. Remember you are not alone and there are no wrong decisions, only a series of opportunities to learn, knowing you are the master of your own creations! Accept your own powerful creations; accept your heart. We honor your journey and hold you in love as you take your next steps forward at this next juncture of your passage. At the very beginning of this month of November there has been a further change taking place within the dimensional setting of your earth plane. The magnetic energy of the central core within your earth plane has shifted, creating a magnification of a pure light force of consciousness coming onto the planet. This light consciousness is highlighting a new path for you to align within. This path is here to support each one of you to begin to adjust your viewpoint — from Illusion to Truth. You will be able to open up, perceiving yourself in a new light, experiencing a more complete and

true dimensional perspective of who you are and what you are capable of in your ability to create. This new vision will re-align you to the multi-dimensional aspect of Self, bringing you to the deeper imprints of your sacred nature. This light consciousness will support you to align to your own creation energy that exists within your sacred nature, and will enable you to be stabilized within your creation essence. An important aspect of this time is your willingness to reach inside of your multi-dimensional self and begin to utilize that which is an innate part of you and then to claim what is yours, right in front of you, within the moment. Through you claiming consciously your ability to create there is an automatic opening up of your creation energy within you, a weaving action that begins to build and create from your heart’s desire within your heart center. You will be able to perceive the action of this weaving of your creation energy. Your own energetic weaving has the ability to move your creation energy into conscious action on this earth plane and then you get to witness that creation which you designed through your heart’s desire as it is made manifest in your life now. This is your time to blossom, to be fulfilled by your own light of truth that you carry within you. This manifestation element, that is a natural part of you, essentially needs to be acknowledged and fully accepted by you. Then, most importantly, you need to be in a state of full receivership, opening consciously to fully receive all aspects of that which you have created. You need to be willing to “Trust” the manifesting process as it unfolds in your life. Simply let go, knowing all is in hand, anchoring   Shift on page 20

from p. 19 the words, “Thy Will Be Done,” and being willing to witness the creation process fully. These above steps are the most important ingredients for your successful manifestation. The utilization of this level of your light activates yet another aspect of a sacred cycle within you as you initiate and participate in your full manifesting process. Understand that through the many actions of letting go, that you have said “yes” to in the past, there has been an accumulation of individual energetic events that have triggered fundamental truths within you. Your acceptance of your own ability to manifest your heart’s desire now, creates yet one more Truth to be anchored through you, and the wheel turns. This is an essential time for each one of you to reclaim your place on the earth plane on a transformed level. An aspect of moving and anchoring here differently is claiming and utilizing your ability to manifest. This action from you moves you beyond the 3rd dimensional illusion and aligns you into your rightful place and power within the Collective Consciousness, which has always been part of your natural birthright. The “Christed energy” that has anchored onto the planet since August is creating wonderful opportunities for each one of you on this path to empower you in this process. Remember that we use the term “Christed.” It is not in your vocabulary, but it means the “Christ energy” in action. This “Christed energy” is giving you the tools to move beyond the old illusions of separation, enabling you to step forward, accelerating your self-resurrection process into a state of self-acceptance and self-love. All of which plays a natural part in your ability to manifest. We are here, yes to support you in remembering who you are and for you to play your essential role within the Universe. However, there comes a moment in time when you need to take a more complete/comprehensive role within the truth of the unfolding of your Planet. An aspect of this role is about you significantly taking back your part as a powerful creative being, taking an active part within the universe to create a dynamic energetic change on planet earth. The truth is that the real changes here on your planet are to take place through your selfrealization as a human being and awakening to your spiritual nature. Now you get to consciously choose to utilize your power by lifting the veils of illusion of being small and insignificant and realigning back to your creative power through a simple process of aligning to your heart. Your true role is forged through your acceptance and understanding of your rightful place here on the earth plane on a multi-dimensional level. As you move fully into a state of acceptance, that you 20  www.edgemagazine.net

are playing an essential role here on your planet, there is a dimensional recalibration that begins to activate within you. This recalibration involves a restructuring within your own conscious perspective of who you are in relationship to the rest of the universe. There is a great importance for you receiving this energetic Truth within your heart space, because as this Truth anchors within your heart, a deeper alignment to your full light frequency aspect of God consciousness is activated and made manifest within you. By claiming your place, “I am here now,” by reaffirming this Truth, that you have said yes to being here at this time on the earth plane, you reclaim your full potential/starring role of being here. TO ACTIVATE THIS PROCESS: 1. Open up through your heart center, (you do this by placing a hand on your heart and taking a conscious breath into the connection of your hand on your heart), and then feel your awareness deepening through your heart. You need to build this connection within your heart. 2. Now use the sound, SUN DAH, into your heart space. Feel your connection to your heart begin to open like a flower to the sun. Feel how your heart is nourished by your own unique frequency of the sound. Breathe and let go into your heart. 3. It’s at this point, when you begin to feel this connection to your heart expand, that you can fully claim your anchoring on this earth plane. I claim my place. I anchor my place here and now. Feel how your heart responds to this Truth! MANIFESTATION STEPS: 4. This is where you can now bring/activate your manifestation ability. Bring the content of your heart’s desire into your heart. You do this by holding your heart’s desire (what it is you wish to manifest) in your heart’s energy. Use your breath, like a soft wind into your heart’s desire until it fully is received through your heart space. Wait until it has fully dissolved into the heart. 5. Then use the sound, SUN DAH, through the heart space. Feel a weaving energy of creation flow within the heart and outwards. Use the sound until the weaving is complete. 6. Softly witness and claim your ability to manifest, honor all that you are. Then breathe and let go, knowing all is in hand in this moment of time.

This simple action moves you beyond the 3rd dimensional illusion. You begin to move and align to your frequency of light, to your own flow of Truth within a 4th/5th /6th dimensional flow. The truth is that you, as a human race, are the ones to reclaim your natural heritage through opening up to your unlimited life force that exists within your own heart’s multi-dimensional center. As you begin to activate your anchored place through your

heart there is a whole new light cycle that is set in motion within you and your life. When you anchor this Truth of your ability to self-manifest, an energetic change begins to flow within the cells of your heart. Each one of your cells has a transmitter that has been lying dormant until now. As you being to utilize your manifestation abilities, a quickening takes place, and an energetic flow of Truth begins to be activated through that transmitter within each cell in your body. We liken it to a pulse, “a heart beat of light” that begins to flow outwards. This pulse of light carries the unique divine frequency of your aspect of the God consciousness. This frequency, once activated, automatically anchors through your cells another multi-dimensional level of your own light consciousness. This pulse of light moves from the transmitter within the cell outwards into the universe. The frequency of the pulse of light aligns you naturally to your place of origin within the light force held in the Collective Consciousness. This Collective Consciousness can be likened to a giant ocean of light, and you are but one drop of water within this ocean. You may think that as you move back through this mighty ocean of light that you may get lost, dissolved. But this is not a truth. As you return to this ocean you become even more defined within your self. Through your realignment to this light force you will be supported into your transition to completeness. This ocean of light force is home. The role we play here is as a support team, guiding you, holding the higher dimensional spaces open for you to re-enter and explore the vastness held within your self. We will continue to play our role as part of a universal team that has been set in place to ensure the completion of the transition of humanity on your planet. The universal community also is anchoring the realms for you so that you can rediscover and claim these sacred aspects of yourself. Each one of you is here to play a sacred role, each one of you carry that unique pure energy within you. We are waiting for you to rejoin us within the Collective framework with your unique patterning. We celebrate all that you are in this moment and honor each step that you need to take for you to have your full experience. Finding your animal ally by Denise Linn Excerpt from the new book Kindling the Native Spirit: Sacred Practices for Everyday Life

Qualities of your animal ally

In many native traditions, finding one’s animal ally often involved a vision quest in nature. However, as we don’t always have the opportunity to go on a quest, there are a number of other ways that you can find your spirit animal:   Think about what animal you are drawn to:

You may find your power animal by noticing the animals to which you feel irresistibly drawn. It could be your favorite animal since childhood. Perhaps you’ve loved stories about cats and have always felt aligned with them. This might indicate that some kind of cat is your ally.   Watch your dreams: A totem may also appear repeatedly in a dream. Before you go to sleep, ask that your spirit animal appear in your dreams. Consider keeping a journal next to your bed so that you can record your dreams as soon as you awaken.

Ask the Creator to give you a sign in regards to your totem. If an animal appears a number of times, especially in unusual ways, this most likely is one of your allies. For example, you receive a card with a horse on it in the mail. Then you begin seeing horses on posters and billboards. There’s a song playing on the radio about a horse, as you’re driving by a field full of horses. If everywhere you turn, you see horses, there’s a good chance that the horse is your totem.

  Pay attention to the signs:

One of the most powerful ways to find your spirit animal is to go on an inner journey (meditation). Imagine yourself in a mist, and picture yourself reaching into the mist to touch your spirit animal. Imagine the mist thinning and “see” what animal has appeared. You can even communicate with the animal to understand why it has come forward as your totem.

  Take the inward journey:

  Spend time in nature: The traditional way to discover your totem is to spend time in solitude in nature and then notice the animals that show up. You can also watch the images in the clouds and even in the patterns on the bark on the trees to get clues as to your totem.

Different cultures assign varying meanings to totems. Trust your intuition to find the significance of yours. There are many books that list power animals and what they represent. Although these can be very useful, it’s important to remember that this is only one person’s or one culture’s interpretation. Read the definition of your animal ally in the book and see if it feels right to you. Your own sense of what a particular spirit animal means is unique and is more valid than anyone else’s opinion. The owl is a good example of these varying definitions. When I was in Western Australia discussing totems with Aboriginal elders, I was told that men feared the owl, for it was a woman’s totem and represented the darkness and the unknown. They said that as men were afraid of the power of women, they also feared the owl. In New Zealand, I discussed animal allies with members of the Maori tribe and asked about the owl. I was told that it was a sacred bird to the Maoris. It was so sacred that its name was never spoken. In my own Native American culture, some tribes revere the owl, saying that it represents deep wisdom, yet other tribes consider it the harbinger of death and darkness. The meaning for each ally can vary dramatically; therefore, it’s crucial that you find the meaning of your ally for yourself. Another way to discover what your totem represents is to read wildlife books, nature magazines and encyclopedias. Research the habits and habitat of the animals with which you feel a special kinship. For example, if you feel that the wolf is your ally, by researching its habits in the wild you’ll discover that they have a strong sense of family. Thus, having a wolf for your ally may increase your connection to your family. a Denise Linn is a member of the Cherokee Nation and the bestselling, award-winning author of 18 books, including Sacred Space and Soul Coaching.® She is an international lecturer, a healer, and a radio talk-show host. EXIST IN LOVE, PEACE, GRATITUDE AND FORGIVENESS by LynMarie8 I am living in such a place of love, peace, gratitude and forgiveness and experiencing all of these things in the 5th dimension and beyond. Doing so keeps you in check with all of your emotions and feelings while in a fully consciously awakened state. You are fully aware of how your thought forms are created and how they affect myself and others. I fully understand how — when I am in love, peace, gratitude and forgiveness, which comes from within the heart — it allows me and keeps me in a neutral state of consciousness. This state of consciousness allows me to experience Love by giving and receiving in equal amounts. If you can love all parts of yourself, then you can receive equally from others. While in all states of this consciousness, you take full responsibility for all thought forms you create. You are fully aware of how your thoughts affect all parts of yourself, back to the origin of your soul as well as others around you. The more you learn to maintain this state of consciousness, the better your whole life moves into the bliss of pure love. Now that I am able to maintain this state of consciousness and hold this state without being lowered by others, it allows others to rise to the occasion and raise their frequency. We are created from frequency, sound, color and harmonics — science combined with matter — and our reality is created from our thoughts. You are what you think. When you live in the place of love, peace, gratitude and forgiveness, you can live in a place of neutrality, where there is no judgment, anger of one’s self or others. Just love. a LynMarie8 connects directly with “The Creator of all that is,” sending that energy directly to you. A MIND HACK TO SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE by Kristine Madera If you’ve cleaned your closets, simplified your meal plans and streamlined your workload and still feel overwhelmed, it may be time to turn inward. Even the most simplified and well-ordered life feels like an inner tornado when you hold a different energy, expectation and intention for the various areas of your life. For a few minutes you hold a calm vibe about having all your bills comfortably paid and the next moment your sister calls for an emergency loan and your money fears shift into high gear. This sends mixed messages to the Universe, which at best brings you mixed results. If you have conflicting energies or intentions within a single focus (like wanting to land the perfect job, but simultaneously wanting to start your own massage business and also wanting to spend the next six months in Thailand going to cooking school), then even when you are standing still, life feels anything but simple. If you want to really simplify your life, simplify your message. This is a training method I use to help people improve their manifestation abilities. Mastering it makes even the most hectic life feel much smoother and simpler. Many people have a guiding vision of what they want their life to look and feel like, but the only time they hold that vision and the good feelings they associate with it is for a few minutes as part of prayer or a manifestation practice. The other 23+ hours they focus on the frustration of not having that vision (which sends the message that they want more frustration), or they focus on the things in their life that are out of alignment with their vision and try to “fix” them from a place of lack (which sends the message that they want more lack). It is much more effective to focus on the

good feeling that you want for your life and to invite everything to reorganize to align to that feeling. Why the feeling rather than the actual vision? When you focus on the vision, you invest your energy in a singular outcome, which limits the creative flow of the Universe and may not bring you what you want anyway. A friend had attached feelings of satisfaction and achievement to getting a master’s degree. She put in two hard years and by the time she got the actual degree, she felt exhausted. Frustrated that the degree didn’t bring her the satisfaction and achievement she wanted, she decided that she needed to reach higher and get her doctorate. Before she invested the time and money in that, I suggested that she focus on the feelings of satisfaction and achievement that she wanted, and then invite her life to reorganize to support that feeling. She did, and in a short time was offered a fun, wellpaying job working with Ivy League graduate students where she expressed her creativity and expertise and received the opportunity for as much advancement as she chooses. All that was realized when she streamlined her energy and focused on a single intention and practice: a fusion of the feelings that she wanted in her work, and inviting her life to line up with that feeling. She did it primarily with her job situation, but I always suggest creating a vibe that you want your whole life to reflect and inviting your whole life to reorder around that vibe — a very simple way of streamlining your energy and your life. You can have a guided experience of this process at Kristinemadera.com/the-secret-ofhow-to-manifest-your-desires/ Once you simplify your message with this process, life reorganizes to bring you the fun, simple, abundant (or whatever kind of) life you want. KISS: KEEP IT SPIRITUALLY SIMPLE by Joni Schmidt In every moment there is a choice. Through every thought there is an action that can mold a behavior that can be concluded with an emotion. In every moment there is a choice. Make your connection to God/ Source your Number One choice and it will become entrained with everything you do. A daily practice (participation) is huge! Start small to create a communication circuit with deep breathing that will eventually bring complete awareness of your beingness. Make it your number one priority to find a practice that resonates with you. Where your attention goes, energy flows. So with that said, I would like to share four building blocks that have helped me to form a productive and solid foundation. This is how I keep it spiritually simple:   Break Free from the Mind

Matrix — We are cosmic beings. Get over (ego) yourself and your belief system. Is there a God? Is there not a God? Do ETs exist? Are they good? Are they bad? It’s not about being right or wrong. This is beyond acquiring mental knowledge; this is cognition and higher sensory perception. What I am speaking of is not a belief system. There is no dogma or attachment; it’s an individual journey. It is who and what we

possible in all ways possible. Eat local and organic, and nurture Loving and Kind relationships. Be aware of thoughts and take responsibility for behavior and actions not only of self, but also for the space you occupy.

are. Understand your multidimensional self and that Spirituality and Energy are one and the same. We are changing on a molecular level. There is no junk DNA. Become familiar with Spiritual Anatomy beyond the Chakras. It’s advanced intelligence; it supersedes the ability “to figure it out” and is deeply connected to harmonics/ math/sacred geometry.   It’s All About Energy — Natural evolution of human beings flows into advanced levels of intelligence with expansion of consciousness, which increases levels of empathic sentience (a facet of developing a higher sensory perception). A way to explain it — so it is more easily understood — is to see Consciousness as plasma light particles (light codes) or “intelligent units” (energy), and think of sentience

as sort of a sensor in our body, if you will. The higher the overall frequency of the Consciousness that uniquely forms the energy of any entity is the relationship to more advanced levels of intelligence and sentience. Intentionally connecting with higher frequencies such as Love, Purity, Kindness, etc., changes our vibration rate. Access to higher frequency is how one accesses higher intelligence, which are levels of higher operating systems. We are in the midst of a bifurcation, and becoming consubstantial with the energy that fosters who we are. The planetary mind, the collective race mind and the individual mind are binding together in several separate resonance groupings. No more fence sitting.   Be Pure

  Pay Attention — You have an internal switch that will always let you know what to do. We all have this internal yes or no switch that is known as Higher Sensory Perception. This is a technique that grows in strength as you become more sensitive to subtle energy. It’s a feeling of contraction for no and a feeling of expansion for yes. If you are in a place of confusion and need clarity, this is an excellent way to feel into what is resonant with your eternal self.

There is no be-all and end-all — and besides, it’s not vital to live in a box. I am offering up what I feel can help you to uncover your hidden history, so you can be a cosmic, free being. There is much to explore and discover. It’s not a contest. Your ascension will happen whether you participate or not. The cool thing is that if you do make the choice to take an active role, the ride is incredibly smoother. a Joni Schmidt is an energetic consultant who has been referred to as a master healer. less is more: simple living, high thinking by Stacie Dooreck In modern society there is not only a push to do more and achieve more, but a constant bombardment from media to consume more. This is taught by media images and advertisements that try to convince us that the external consumption of material things will give us greater happiness and peace of mind. However, the truth that the yogis teach is that the way to true inner peace has nothing to do with things on the outside, nor what we accomplish, achieve and obtain — or even from what we do. Instead, the yogis teach us that being in touch with the essence of who we really are, the innermost Self, is the key to inner and lasting peace. This can be realized with a few simple steps a day, practicing some simple yogic tools to connect us with our true nature. It is in this connection with the deepest part of us of that we can experience the simplicity and joy of just “being.” Swami Vishnudevananda, who founded the Sivananda Yoga centers and ashrams in the U.S., said, “It is impossible to find peace outside. If you want to find peace, you have to look for peace where it is. If you want to find peace, you must first of all find it within. If you find this peace within, you will also find it outside. So if you want to have external peace, find, first of all, the peace within.” His guru, Sivananda, said, “To achieve that state of lasting happiness and absolute peace, we must first know how to calm the mind, to concentrate and go beyond the mind. By turning the mind’s concentration inward, upon the self, we can deepen that experience of perfect concentration. This is the state of Meditation.” To sit and do nothing but observe the breath, perhaps a sound (mantra) or other tools to calm the mind, brings so many benefits. It is so simple that many people overlook it and seek external ways to find peace. When we start to meditate, and sit still, for even a few minutes a day, we may see that truly “less is more,” as joy and peace is obtained not in the “doing” but by the “being” of your true nature. To make our lives more simple and create a few more minutes a day to meditate and “be” with our innermost Self, we can follow some basic ideas from the yogic way of living. Yoga, or “union,” is an ancient science to help us reach a greater connection with ourselves and the world around us. Yoga 24  www.edgemagazine.net

includes postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), chanting, relaxation, meditation, nonviolent actions and diet (vegetarian) and healthy, balanced eating and living. Even trying small steps from the yogic ideas brings greater health and balance and can impact our life in beneficial ways. Everyone can benefit from yoga, because yoga can be modified to suit your needs. The benefits are numerous, ranging from pain relief to peace of mind. A simple way to think of it is that yoga can be summarized as a full lifestyle. Swami Vishnudevananda condensed the essence of the yoga teachings into five principles for physical and mental health, as well as spiritual growth:   Proper Exercises — asana   Proper Breathing — pranayama   Proper Relaxation — savasana   Proper Diet — vegetarian   Positive Thinking and Meditation — dhyana Using these five principals for a holistic yogic lifestyle for inner peace, outer health and harmony with animals and the earth, plus some additional ideas suggested here, can contribute more simplicity, more peace and greater harmony to our day. 10 Ideas to Simplify Our Lives:   Proper Exercise: Each day do a little bit of

exercise (yoga, tai chi, qigong, swimming, walking, etc.) It is better to practice yoga or tai chi 15 minutes day than waiting until your weekend or holiday schedule allows a full hour class or practice time. Modify exercise or yoga routines so that it works for your schedule. When we keep it simple, we are more likely to be consistent. Walking, tai chi and yoga do not require any equipment and can be done anywhere.

  Proper Breathing: The yogis offer breathing

techniques for specific effects, such as increasing energy or calming the mind. Many practices exist, but if you just start out by simply paying attention to the breath, or even taking a few slow deep breaths a day — the most simple thing we can do without needing to change our environment — that is a great start. Also, when we slow the breath down, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the opposite of the “fight or flight” response we have when we are under stress. The yogis give tools for deep, conscious relaxation (often done after yoga postures), but you can even practice relaxation during a lunch break, while sitting on a bench or — if you don’t have time in the day — by spending a few minutes at night being conscious of the relaxation process before you go to sleep. Simply watch the muscles in your body relax one by one as you bring awareness to each part of the body. Observe your breath, allowing the mind and body to unwind and relax deeply.

  Proper Relaxation:

The yogis have taught that there is no need to harm any living being, including the animals. A simple plant-based diet, including fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains, does not harm animals or our health, and it is best for the Earth. It is so simple to prepare fresh salads and steamed vegetables with rice. Simple eating also is easier on the digestive tract.

 Proper Diet:

It takes no time at all to change a thought. When you realize your mind is too busy or being negative, try the yogic technique called prakti paksha bhavana by replacing a negative thought with a positive one. Choose which thought to focus on when you meditate. “Everything

  Positive Thinking:

what matters the most? find ways to disregard clutter, unnEEDED THINGS by Amy Blank I recently helped my mother move from her home into longterm care. I had the daunting task of combing through her possessions to decide what was most important for her to move with her. All of this sorting and purging got me thinking: What is really important in our lives? In the end, does all of this stuff really matter? As I sorted through her home, I saw the belongings of someone who led a simple life, yet had far more possessions than she would ever use. I wondered, “What didn’t she have because she had all of this stuff?” I quickly realized that she needed very little to be happy in her new residence. Unlike the packed drawers and stuffed closets in her home, her new residence needed only a few things to feel like home:   A clock and a calendar — Knowing where and when you are in your day is important.   A

small, well-curated wardrobe — Mix and match essentials that work in your environment are key. If everything in your wardrobe is coordinated, choices are simple and you always look well put together.   A few decorative items to make rooms feel like home. The key word here is few. Cluttered rooms are less inviting, harder to keep

that happens in your mind is reflected in your body,” says the yoga master T.K.V. Desikachar. Sitting in silence a few minutes or more a day allows the mind to settle and the body to relax, and that creates a better sense of well-being. Even when life is hectic and busy, allow a few minutes a day to just “be.” That is so useful for the immune system, and it allows the mind to gain clarity and the body to relax and restore energy. Keep it simple. Find a quiet place in your home or outside to just pause, sit and observe the breath. Allow the thoughts to come and go. Over time, the mind will get more quiet and peaceful.

  Meditation:

Each day, get proper sleep and rest. The amount of hours needed will vary for each person. Creating a soothing nighttime ritual may allow for deeper sleep. A nighttime ritual can include herbal tea, or reading a yoga book at night instead of watching the TV or internet, which may create disturbances in the mind or emotions.

  Proper Sleep:

  Unplug from technology each day: Although

cell phones, internet and modern technology are designed to make our lives more efficient, and even easier, they often distract us from being in the present moment, being with other people and noticing our surroundings. Each time you go to exercise, before bedtime or when you first wake up, try to take some time to be with your breath,

clean and more difficult to maneuver. Keep your spaces simple and user-friendly so you can enjoy them every day.   A small collection of keepsakes — Keepsakes are not just meant to be kept, they are meant to be enjoyed. Storing possessions in boxes for years means no one is enjoying them. Why wait to leave things in a will? Enjoy them today. If no one is enjoying your treasures, perhaps it’s time to let them go. Considering selling them or giving them away.   Personal care items to make you feel fresh — We all need grooming. Keep in mind that most of these items have a shelf life, however. Old makeup is especially hazardous to your health, so do yourself a favor and purge it. Stick with a few things you love and that you will use. The rest is simply clutter.   If you are responsible for cooking, cleaning and home maintenance, you would also need cleaning supplies, along with cookware, utensils and dinnerware to stock your kitchen.   Additionally, we all need to keep the appropriate paperwork (paper or digital) to track finances, pay bills and keep records (such as taxes). Many guides are available to help you determine how long to keep financial records. Make a plan to do an annual purge of records you know longer need and have those items shredded or appropriately destroyed.

After determining what would stay with my mother in her new residence, I found myself purging the vast majority of what she owned. Here are three themes I saw over and over:   Duplicates and more duplicates! How many sets of sheets does one bed need? How many place settings can a person use at one

body and surroundings and take a break from computers and cell phones.   Let go of things you don’t need: A simple, zen-like environment will help the mind focus and be more at peace. Get rid of clothes you don’t need by donating them to a local homeless shelter. Donate books you no longer want. See what you can let go of to create more room for simplicity in your home, office and life. This includes not only material belongings that you no longer want or use, but excess thoughts that no longer serve your greater good and inner peace. When we let go of the old, we make room for the new.   Spend time in nature: Nature is healing and it brings so much joy. Watching birds, feeling the sunshine on your face and enjoying the change of seasons is so simple, yet we are often so busy in our minds that we overlook it. Physicians in San Francisco and other areas are now prescribing park time to patients. Each day, find some time to breathe in the fresh air. This can be while you walk to your car, when you’re at work, or when you can take a walk through a park or on a beach. Even if you are unable to get outside, take three slow deep breaths right now and notice the trees and sky outside and come back to the present moment. Feel the body as you inhale, and relax the mind as you exhale.

Go within to find joy and peace instead of finding it on the outside. It

  Joy is within:

  What

Matters on page 26

is much more simple to sit a few minutes in silence, to notice the breath or enjoy a walk, than it is to need an external way to find the peace. When you tap in to the peace within, it is always there to return to. Regardless of your circumstances, relationships and outer world, the mind can always rest on the breath. Here is a little song of the Yoga of Synthesis for daily practice from Swami Sivananda: Eat a little, drink a little, Talk a little, sleep a little, Mix a little, move a little, Serve a little, rest a little Work a little, relax a little, Study a little, worship a little, Do Asanas (yoga postures) a little, Pranayamas (yogic breathing exercises) a little, Reflect a little, Meditate a little, Do Japa (mantra repetition) a little, do Kirtan (devotional chanting) a little, Write Mantra a little, have Satsanga (gathering of spiritually like minded people) a little. Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realize. Be Good, Do good; Be kind, Be compassionate. Set a firm date and time for completion. erasing yesterday: start anew, enjoy every moment “It’s being here now that’s important. There’s no past and there’s no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can’t relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don’t know if there is one.” — George Harrison by Dusty Reed Erasing our yesterdays and starting anew and refreshed each day is a wonderful concept. Is it possible? Erasing yesterdays does not mean changing our activity on purpose. That supports effort and being spontaneous does not require effort. It does require a mindset of today being the day to “begin a new life.” As with tunnel vision, we only see today; the healthy, good memories will come along naturally. The less-favorables will fall away. We can enjoy the delightful memories, but sitting on worries only causes them to hatch into more worries. Life is meant to be a joyful experience. We can let go of the less favorables and focus on enjoying the current moment. Anxiety prevents absorbing what is happening in the current moment. It blocks the delight of a fresh breath of air, of offering gratitude for all we have. It keeps the body tense, which, in turn, affects our health, causing indigestion, headaches and other disorders that distract us in the moment. By studying the scrolls in Og Mandino’s book, Greatest Salesman in the World, I am absorbing the lessons they offer. After studying the first scroll for three weeks, a light bulb in my head began to blink. Mr. Mandino shares a healthy thought: “Experience is comparable to fashion; an action that proved successful today will be unworkable and impractical tomorrow.” This moment is not a recurrence of success — or failure — from the past. It is what we do with it now. A friend shared that she keeps a special time free each day for doing whatever she chooses for that time. Some have shared that they go with the

flow every day. How much of that flow includes daily, necessary routines? Keeping a running list of what we do through the day will tell us how much we are doing from habit and how much we are choosing to do spontaneously. Do we automatically fix meals for our family at a certain time? Do we make the bed before we leave for work? Do we drive a certain route to work each day? Our habits are myriad, even though we seldom give them any conscious thought. Do we smell the same fragrances each day? Do we only hear certain sounds around us? Or do we see something new? For some people, a routine has set in for various reasons, with every day being quite the same. Variety can be the spice of life and working toward creating new experiences can offset the monotony of any single recipe used repetitively. Undesirable habits can be broken and replaced with more preferable happenings. If visiting a friend or relative who lives alone or at a nursing home is long past due, one can prepare a special greeting card, a little decorative table favor, or bake something they can enjoy. Being able to present them with a gift makes it easier to follow through with traveling to see them. I have written and allowed to happen, at various stages in my life, what I would consider my “ideal” day. Sometimes this includes a desired schedule of activity. Sometimes it includes a scenario of how I would like to see my life transformed into a desired lifestyle. By focusing on this in times past, I now see all of these desires molded into my life as my desired lifestyle. My ideal day now continues by beginning every day with meditation to “clear my slate” and start a new page at that moment. Each day has been given for every individual to do with it as desired. It is a personal choice with how one chooses to invest time. It includes making decisions, preparation and a willingness to enjoy every moment. Staying attuned to the goodness of today brings a sparkle of enthusiasm, elation, being in harmony with all that exists. It offers a bouquet of understanding and flows with the oneness of creation. Activities become effortless. This energy permeates every trace of life one can experience. What is a desirable accomplishment for today? Making a special phone call? Getting some exercise? Baking something special? A scheduled meeting with someone? Working in the garage? Whether it is necessary or just a desire for getting started with something, taking steps, one at a time, can lead to success. By staying in each “today,” we experience success in every moment! Thus, we can enjoy life to the fullest! a

Whether it is pondering philosophy, new enlightenment, sharing thoughts, or questioning and searching… it feels good to put thoughts on paper and I discover something I hadn’t yet learned to apply. When it becomes a part of my life, it brings an exciting ‘Aha! — that’s how that works!’ Life IS a joy… every moment!” Copyright © 2015. All Rights Reserved.

SAIL TO SIMPLICITY for PERSONAL VITALITY, GROWTH Spirit Leaves

by Janet Michele Red Feather I’m very visual and audial. I thrive in breathable, open spaces filled with luxurious silence. It’s terrible to have too many things; it is far better to treasure but a few. Without clearing and clarifying, energy gets blocked and stagnation sets in. I miss wading in the gently winding river of chi: the light-filled positive energy allowed to wash through my apartment and my life when I keep the area plain and clear. In writing this month’s column, I have come to appreciate the significance and spiritual nature of the practice of simplification. The definition of to “simplify” has itself been rendered complex by Meriam-Webster. To simplify means: to reduce to basic essentials; to diminish in scope or complexity; or to make more intelligible. I was in desperate need of all of the above; so in reflecting upon each as a distinct stage in a process, I envisioned a way of surfacing from my own oceanic wreckage. “To reduce to basics” is an obvious infinitive phrase. I surveyed every room for a redundancy of Buddhas, Quan Yins and candles. I culled knickknacks from all directions, wrapping and donating them. I wanted to free myself from the disabling degree of amassed possessions. I’m not a hoarder; I rationalized: I’m a connoisseur of sacred and beautiful things. Right — that’s how I got in this predicament in the first place. My dad’s bumper sticker slogan now sounded strangely like wisdom: “When in doubt, throw it out!” Simplicity next asks us “to diminish in scope or complexity.” We need not procrastinate, overwhelmed by the mere thought of inventorying our life’s stores. We need only ask: should an exigency arise — should the meteor finally strike the earth and force us to flee — what should we take? I would grab just my pipe bag, hand drum and purse: everything else is incidental. When considering what I truly valued for survival and happiness, the list diminished significantly in scope and complexity. The first two of the above steps are rudimentary: clearing clutter and letting go of attachments are fundamentals. I could follow those steps and enjoy a slight measure of Feng Shui. How was I to navigate the last, most difficult challenge in the voyage toward simplicity, that of making life “more intelligible?” Extranea had given rise to distraction over time, entangling my thoughts in murky waters. The remains of my highest ideals were dashed ashore, my dreams nearly vanquished by dark waves. As I cleared more empty space, a dream began clarifying, buoyed on a tide of lucid possibility. Why not treat my apartment like a lakeside getaway cabin? With that image in mind, I pared the place down, simplifying the interior and, concomitantly, my life. I left several walls bare,

hanging only artwork or painted sayings that held deep personal meaning. I cleared counters and surfaces of their mélange, leaving only those objects possessed of both beauty and utility. Tables and shelves would remain natural, stripped of altar cloths, doilies and dresser scarves. Each piece of furniture now shone in its distinctive, essential condition. As an irretrievable bibliophile, it was time I faced the question of how many books I would part with in favor of a reduced, less complex, intelligible existence. Here was the test: if I hadn’t opened a book in half a year, it was extra. I bravely cleared shelves and carried stacks of books to sell to Half Price Books. I now delight in the glossy, reflective surfaces of my small wooden dining table, dry sink and bookshelves. All the white objects — three Quan Yins and four vanilla candles — look more beautiful, having been rendered more isolated and visible. There is room for energy to flow around them. The task of clearing yielded for me instant rewards. Likewise, the remaining icons on my altars seem pleased and appeased. Already I imagine a Yoga mat spread evenly over the burgundy Persian rug. I feel more energized, believing I can accomplish things, maybe express myself again through art, music and writing. Simplification is more than a concept: it’s paramount as a precursor to emotional vitality and spiritual growth. a Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D., M.A., has taught literature and composition for 18 years at the university, state, tribal and community college levels. She is currently a tenured English faculty member at Normandale Community College. Janet enjoys her role as Ceremonial Singer for Native American ceremonies, singing traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota. She made a career shift into teaching after serving nearly eight years as a defense litigator in California. Her life changed significantly after she traveled to North Dakota in 1993 to fast and pray for a way of life. She welcomes correspondence at JanetRedFeather77@gmail.com. Copyright © 2015. The Littlest Spirit’s

H ea l i n g D r u m by Maria Lisa Polegatto Healing with a drum can bring you peace, contentment and insight into life. It can reduce stress which causes illness and gives you strength and wisdom. To learn the story of the healing drum, we must learn about the spirits God created. For God created the Light and into the Light he brought forth many spirits to live among us. As each spirit was created, He touched them with his magic and gave them life and gave them freedom to go forward into the world and live amongst nature to teach them many things. Some spirits were shy, some were boastful, some conceited, some humble. He created them all different like we are to teach us many things. When he had created the last spirit, he searched his kingdom for the right spirit to help teach them all. Someone who was much like him, who held the Light, like we all do, but someone that could help lead the spirits and teach them the way of the Light. He found Grandfather Spirit and took him into the Light to see the vast marvels of the Light. Grandfather Spirit was just like you and I. He had a part of the Light within him. As Grandfather Spirit looked around at all the other spirits, he asked God if he was sure that he could achieve this task. God smiled at Grandfather Spirit and assured him he was full of the Light and would know how to help the other spirits. I will be right beside you every step of the way, God assured Grandfather Spirit. God introduced all of the spirits to Grandfather Spirit and asked them to come forward into the circle of Light. He explained that he taught Grandfather Spirit the secrets to be shared among them. As the spirits came forward, some ran into the circle to be first, some peeked out from behind the trees and flowers before coming over, and one little spirit came into the circle humble and wide-eyed, eager to learn. Grandfather Spirit turned round and round and looked at each of the spirits. The spirits could see that Grandfather Spirit was smiling. Not just a smile but a warm and generous smile that ran ear to ear and illuminated his face. He was glowing. The spirits started to buzz with excitement and questions. Grandfather Spirit, noticing the Littlest Spirit, stopped and said to everyone, “Listen!” Silence filled the air. “Hush children, let us learn about the Light,” said Grandfather Spirit as he looked into the face of the Littlest Spirit. “What can I help you with?” he asked the Littlest Spirit. Looking humbled and speaking softly, 28  www.edgemagazine.net

the Littlest Spirit said, “How do we know we are part of the Light?” Grandfather Spirit smiled at him and reassured him. “We are all part of the Light. Some of us just shine more brightly at times, but we can all shine just as brightly as each other.” “How do we shine?” asked the Littlest Spirit. Again, Grandfather Spirit smiled at the Littlest Spirit. “We shine when we grow love within us. God created love all around us, look around and see the birds that fly, the trees that breathe, the flowers that bloom, the water that flows, the grass that grows to feed the animals who teach us many things. The earth is our school where we learn to grow love. See the spirit in each of the living plants and trees and flowers and microcosms, the spirits within the animals and the humans. When the trees love, they grow taller and wider and freely give out more oxygen. When the flowers love, they grow deeper in color and produce medicines. The earth is a continually evolving and revolving circle of life that lives and breathes and grows with us. Look at the spirit in the trees, see its face in the bark. See the clouds above form faces and shapes of all the spirits that have come and gone before us.” Just then the Littlest Spirit started to smile and his eyes danced with excitement, “I see your spirit within you Grandfather Spirit. I see it dancing in the Light.” Grandfather Spirit looked around the circle at all the faces of the spirits…and they were all smiling — actually beaming from ear to ear, their faces as bright as the sun shining in the sky. Grandfather Spirit was pleased. He just stood and turned very slowly and quietly gazed at all the faces, not making a peep to disturb them. And the more the love in the circle grew, the more the trees grew taller, the flowers grew brighter, the birds perched on the wildlife that came out of the forest to listen to Grandfather Spirit. Everyone was glowing.

And when one of the spirits got tired and forgot to love, the circle grew dim so another spirit would send extra energy to help increase the love of that spirit, which increased the flow in the circle back to full Light. And the spirits have taken this teaching forward with them into these days. When the world turns dark, the spirits love all that much stronger to keep the vibration high and into the Light. And for all the darkness in the world, there is Light that will pull you through it. Feel the hugs of the Light dance around you and dance into the Light. For when you feel you need more love, have confidence that you have the strength to love enough to reach the Light. And that is why God sent forth Grandfather Spirit to teach us the ways of the Light. For not everyone can see God until they see the Light and spirit within others. And seeing that the Littlest Spirit was so young and vulnerable, God reached in and took a piece of himself and made the Littlest Spirit a drum. As he gave the Littlest Spirit the drum, he explained that he made the drum from the beat of his own heart so that anytime the Littlest Spirit needed to hear and feel God’s love, he could beat on the drum and let it vibrate deep within his spirit. The Littlest Spirit was so amazed and humbled by this gift, he looked it over inside and out. His eyes so welled up with compassion that he looked up and didn’t see God standing right beside him, so he immediately knew what to do. He picked up the drum and began to drum just as God showed him. The rest of the spirits then joined in, and together they drummed in unison, and they could be heard all over the Great Forest. And to this day, the Littlest Spirit has the biggest heart in the Great Forest, because he drums every day to increase the flow of peace and love in the world. When you awake each morning, know that the spirits have brought you wisdom and clarity under the moonlight to illuminate the Light within you to cleanse and purify your spirit to renew your strength by drawing from your experiences to look within your soul to trust and grow love. Know that when you drum on in life, the Littlest Spirit is drumming along with you, too. a Maria Lisa Polegatto grew up and lives in Nova Scotia, Canada, where she works full time. selfies Selfish or Soulful? by Bridgette Doerr I’m taking a class — the “Wear Your Joy Project!” with artist Kelly Rae Roberts — in which I take and share a lot of selfies. I take pictures of what I’m wearing to bringing me joy and I share them with others in the class. It felt so weird to take pictures of myself at first. Really weird. It is hard to see the reflection as good enough — not to mention the challenge of lighting and taking pics of the full-length mirror in my bathroom. So many hurdles and comfort zone red flags — but it has been exhilarating! The class is an excavation of the unwritten rules we live by that limit ourselves in how we show up in the world. We learn using our wardrobes. It has been an incredible journey for me. You may have seen my pics on Instagram or Pinterest, on my new board Playing Dress Up with Joy. I have started using Instagram because of this class. I have also taken more leaps in expressing myself, starting with the way I get dressed. I don’t just blend in and fit in clothing — now my clothes reflect sunbeams of my personality beaming through. Parts of me that are artistic and moody. Parts that are curious and defiant. Breaking rules of what I think I should do based on age, body type, or venue are being shattered everywhere. You know those social norms we have been in sync with all throughout our lifetime, the confined frustration that is played out in our relationships, our workplace and our health. Could it be rooted in being unaware that we get to choose what we want and how we want to show up in the world? Yet,

in the closets of day-to-day life, a quiet declaration of freedom from judgment and self-doubt fueled in a moment of courage, it can happen. Can a 42-yearold soccer mom wear a cowboy hat, rocker T, overalls and Doc Martens? The answer is your own. You can do what you want with your life. You have choice, just like I do. There are many ways to jumpstart your journey of true expression. Centered with inspiration and creating momentum. To live happier than you are — to live more authentically even if you don’t know what you like or who you really are anymore. Any time is a good time to start rediscovering and recreating yourself. It is my goal to share the opportunity for empowered living, full on, with your heart in the lead. I cut my hair as short as it’s ever been and I am playing with choosing a role and dressing up as it — a role that I like or have been drawn to, such as a rancher or cowboy vibe. I love Junk Gypsy style. Not into the cowgirl boots, but Doc Martens or Converse or even a high heel could work for me. Gotta have some bling and a rebellious flavor. A little hippy flow is welcome and so is plaid and leather. Denim and pearls. Amen. I mean, A-wo-men. a Bridgette Doerr, founder of Fairy Grasshopper, has a desire to Inspire! Words of Wisdom by Nadine Penny Commemorate All Saints Day (Nov. 2) and the Day of the Dead (Nov. 1-2) by honoring your loved ones in heaven this November. How do you do that? Light a candle in their memory, say a prayer, play the music they loved to hear, cook their recipes, treasure their gifts, and remember the fun times and happiness. When our loved ones transition, it’s painful and it’s sad; there’s a hole in our heart that can’t be filled. But when we take time to cherish their memory, it helps us smile through our grief and reminds us that while our loved one’s physical body might be gone, their spirit shines on. a Nadine Penny attained her M.A. from the University of Denver in Counseling Psychology. Nadine lives in Minnetonka where she works as a medium, life issues reader and Reiki master. Contact her by email at nadine.penny@gmail.com and visit www.nadinepenny.com. Copyright © 2015.
